I have been harping on this for some time and finally decided to lay out why I think it makes some sense for Google to consider making 'clickable countries' an option in Google Earth.  In the world of the aid worker communications bandwidth is the single most important factor.  We pay more for bandwidth than just about anyone in the world.  In an earlier post I pointed out that SIM cards in Myanmar cost $1500.  I can tell you that from experience a VSAT installation in the tsunami ravaged region of Aceh, Indonesia costs $1700 for service equivalent to a dial-up connection from the 1990's and 1MB of data over an INMARSAT portable satellite modem costs aywhere from $4 to 8$.  To view www.cnn.com just one time costs about $5.

Bandwidth is the Achille's heal of the aid community and while things are getting easier (aircards are replacing data cables) the rates are still through the roof and the networks are dirtier a more fragile than most folks can comprehend.  The question I always ask is, "Do you know how many syringes I can buy for $5?"

That being the case it would save all of us a tremendous amount of money if the folks over at Google took it upon themselves to implement for Google Earth what I have long referred to as 'clickable countries'.  The idea is to give the user the ability to turn off the image layers for any country, continent or body of water.  If I am working in Myanmar all I really need to see imagery for is Myanmar and Thailand.  I don't need North America, South America, the Pacific Ocean, etc.  The bandwidth savings, if we were able to drop out all unnecessary imagery, would be tremendous and that translates into money saved which is money that can be used to buy more syringes, medecines and medical equipment.

I am not sure how easy it would be to accomplish this from a technical standpoint but the benefit to the humanitarian aid community would be tremendous.  I have heard time and time again from various aid workers that while they love Google Earth there is really no way they can you use it in the field because of the slow speed and high cost of bandwidth.  Implementing 'clickable countries' in the Layers section would make a somewhat inaccessible tool readily available to the people who desperately need it - aid workers in the field - and Google could take full credit for the countless lives they would save by doing so.  Not only would such an action benefit humanitarian aid workers, it would also benefit the communities they serve.  They communities we work in around the world all suffer from the same low bandwidth fate as we do yet they do not have the same cash resources to resolve the problem.  Google Earth's market penetration could be significantly increased were they to implement the 'clickable countries' solution.

I have a heard a number of times that caching imagery is a viable solution to the bandwidth problem but the reality is that most folks have no idea how to cache imagery and when the fabled 'DVD full of imagery that gets shipped to the field' solution comes up it takes about 30 seconds to convince the other person that it is really just a nice idea that has little basis in reality.  The tech community needs to learn the rules we play by and we need to learn the same about the challenges they face.

I am hopeful that somewhere down the road Google will implement the 'clickable countries' solution but if I have learned anything during my foray into the world of technology it is patience.

This is a view in Google Earth of my home and Mount Wellington in the background.  I built the model in Sketchup, a really easy process.  I worked off of the plans that I have, however a measuring tape would have done just as well!  Once the model was completed I opened up Google Earth and found my home's location then imported that location into Sketchup, toggled the terrain to 'on' and then oriented the model onto the terrain.  Now whenever I open Google Earth my 3-D model will be there, better still I have now shared this model by uploading it to the Google Earth 3-D warehouse for anyone to download if they so desire.  Even better than that is the fact that after scrutiny, the model, if successful will become part of Google Earth's 3-D buildings layer and will be visible to all who use Google Earth.  You can locate  the model in the 3-D warehouse by using the search term 'Glendowie House."

As I said in an earlier post, this whole process would be a good project for schools to take on.  By breaking down their school into individual buildings, groups of students could be responsible for measuring and building to scale in Sketchup their school buildings.  Once completed they could then be compiled into a collection of buildings on their own Google Earth programme, or indeed share for others to view and fly around in 3-D using Google Earth.

Anyone interested in joining the project?  A great measurement exercise for a long term maths project...  I will be getting students on the Supertanker to embark on this process in the coming weeks and months, I just need a donor class to pick up this particular baton...  If you do build a model of your school and share it in Google Earth, please let me know so that I can share this information with others.

Dan Herman on the Wikinomics blog points to recently released data of 84,000 3D buildings for inclusion in Google Earths’ Cities in 3D program. Barney Krucoff, the GIS Manager for OCTO gives five reasons for the release of the data on Googles Latlong blog:

1. It is the right thing to do.

2. Because every neighborhood can benefit from 3D.

3. We get better 3D performance from the cloud and we don’t pay for it.

4. We want to communicate with our residents.

Very impressive stuff and something the Power of Information taskforce here in the UK seems to understand

Images from IKONOS2 is can show objects up to 1m and are available for anyone who can afford it. The East View Cartographic website has higher altitude examples available. For those bored with Google Earth and willing to pay for some variation, there's Genesiis Software (Pvt) Ltd who is the reseller for IKONOS related goodies in Sri Lanka.

Another imaging satellite that regularly visits Sri Lanka is one of the COSMOS family (tracking data screen shot below). The COSMOS is listed as a "communications" satellite by NASA but has others that are listed under the "surveillance" category. If you know more, the comment box below awaits your expert wisdom.

With the launch of GeoEye-1, the resolution has increased to less than half a metre. For the rich and bored its a great way to check out the latest at the LTTE's Iranamadu airstrip or the actual extent of the damage caused by air force attacks. So much for bans on taking pictures in Fort or the Defence ministry's touchy attitude about maps :)

It is logical to expect that a terrorist organisation like the LTTE does its spy satellite shopping else where. For terrorists they particularly adapt at using satellite technology. Even to extent of hijacking satellites to broadcast propaganda and perhaps other forms of data. The dailyestimate.com carries a lengthy article on the terrorist hijacking of satellites - specifically of the Intelsat-12 satellite (formally called Europe Star 1). It even got discussed on slashdot. The incident is also covered in an post about "How to hack a satellite". Of course this is old stuff. As far as our rulers are concerned satellite is just an ex president ;)

The IKONOS2 and COSMOS are not the only spy satellites that fly over Sri Lanka. You can easily locate the others via several satellite tracking sites. I found using the website "Real time satellite tracking" together with the "Heavens Above" website a very easy way to locate satellite fly over info. Both websites have extensive databases of the satellites in orbit as well as online tools to that calculate overfly information at any location you care to specify. I was able to generate the images in this post within minutes of logging into Real time satellite tracking website (its free). You can use it track Intelsat-12 if you are so inclined.

Potawatomi State Park is a magical little park on the peninsula of Door County, Wisconsin.  The DNR has been cutting down large numbers of trees in the park's most pristine natural area to build an RV group campground.

According to my estimate, they are cutting down at least one thousand mature trees for this new campground.

However, there is an abandoned former campground/ski area on the other side of the park.  This area has weed covered roads and parking areas as well as refuse laying about, and could be reclaimed as a campground.  There are many tall trees, and it should be cleaned up and used, it is already quite scenic:

However, the DNR would rather cut down trees, many of which are 75 years old and older.  The DNR justifies this by saying they are just following the park's master plan.  However, they are not following the master plan because these trees are being cut southeast of where the master plan says the group campground should go:

Furthermore, when the master plan was approved over 21 years ago (1987), the ski area was still in use.  However, the broken glass and the decay of the wooden ski lodge testify that this area has been abandoned for many years.  The master plan is out of date.

The DNR should halt construction on this new campground until the master plan can be updated so that there can be public input regarding this project.  The master plan for Potawatomi State Park will now be updated in the next 2 to 3 years.

If they continue with this new RV group campground before updating the master plan, there will be nothing left for the public to plan.  These trees belong to the people of Wisconsin, not the DNR.  The people should be consulted before they are cut, not after.

Finally, I suspect that these trees are being cut, not because the campground has to be there, but rather so that the DNR can sell the lumber.  Selling lumber is profitable, picking up garbage is not:

Nonetheless, the purpose of our State Park System is to preserve these special places for future generations, not just to make short term profit for today's DNR.

Update

The DNR's latest "excuses" are that the old ski area gets too hot in the Summertime and doesn't have access to trails or other park amenities.  However, there is a trail right at the top of the hill, one at the bottom of the hill that runs north, and another one that comes down the hill and goes right past the abandoned lodge.  Last year, the Door County Visitor Bureau produced a video of people mountain biking down that trail:

The tour guide in the video notes that the trails near the old ski area are especially "gorgeous," and the biker in the video is riding the very trail that runs right past the abandoned ski lodge.

Nonetheless, the DNR says there is no access to trails.

Furthermore, the abandoned ski area has electrical lines, while the natural area where they are cutting trees does not.  The new RV group campground will not have electrical hook ups.  Therefore, the abandoned ski area would have more access to park amenities because it would have electricity.

Regarding the Summer heat, I remember there being many homes near the park boundary (Gitche Gumee Road), and Google Earth confirms that there are numerous homes across the road from the abandoned ski area.  Apparently, it's not too hot to live there, but according to the DNR, it's too hot to camp in an RV (with electrical hook ups).

Finally, the DNR says there is a "demonstrable need" for group camping.  But there is also a "demonstrable need" for outdoor public nature areas that do not smell of hot dogs, campfires, and outhouses; and this new RV group campground will be upwind of a good chunk of the park.  There is also a "demonstrable need" for nature trails.  But this project is degrading the nature trails on the south end of the park into mere "campground trails."

I suspect the DNR located that campground there, not because they had to, but rather so that they could sell the lumber and defray their expenses.  Why else would they pick an area of the park where the trees were the tallest, thickest, and most beautiful?  What is the going rate for a 90 year old hardwood tree?

La primera vez que instalé RDM+ en mi N95 no tenía muchas expectativas de que fuese algo USABLE. Pero tengo que reconocer que me ha sacado de apuros más de una vez. El producto está muy bien pensando y se apoya en un menú interno que permite suplir la falta de un monitor adecuado, un mouse y un teclado externo (en mi caso uso un SU-8W).

Más allá de describir la experiencia, creo que deben probarlo. RDM+ es un producto comercial pero pueden descargar la versión de prueba de esta dirección: http://www.rdmplus.com

Por otro lado, la segunda imagen corresponde a PUTTY S60. Esta pieza de software permite establecer conexiones por canal seguro vía SSH (SSH1/SSH2). Este producto en particular no presenta grandes diferencias con la versión de escritorio. Una vez conectados, estamos en la consola del LINUX.

Para simplificar el proceso de conexión (usuario y contraseña) es posible generar una llave (infraestructura KPI) para automatizar el login o incrementar la seguridad con una contraseña de respaldo.

A diferencia de RDM+ es muy recomendable tener un teclado externo para utilizar ya que no es un entorno gráfico sino una consola de texto.

El proceso para poder enviar información desde Google Earth a Nokia Maps en tu NSERIES con GPS es sencillo:

1. Inicien Google Earth y encuentren la ubicación deseada
2. Graben la ubicación en formato .kml (no confundir con .kmz)
3. En este paso, utilizaremos este sitio Web para convertir desde el formato de Google Earth a un formato que pueda ser interpretado por Nokia Maps: http://poiconvert.free.fr/. Seleccionamos el archivo .kml como fuente de ORIGEN
4. Subimos el archivo .kml que generamos
5. Seleccionamos el formato de SALIDA. Es interesante que este converso puede generar archivos para TomTom (.ov2), Garmin (.asc) y Nokia Maps (.lmx)
6. Presionar sobre el botón CREATE .LMX que generará el archivo y lo ofrecerá para descarga
7. Enviar el archivo .lmx a tu NSERIES. En este punto, hay varias formas de hacerlo: bluetooth, copiarlo a una carpeta por cable USB o incluso enviarlo por email a uno mismo
8. Una vez que tenemos el archivo en el teléfono seleccionen ABRIR y Nokia Maps se iniciará buscando esa ubicación. Luego pueden guardarla en sus favoritos.

Since becoming a computer owner, I downloaded Google earth about a month ago and have been in awe ever since. This week I also updated my Google Earth, the new items makes the whole experience mind blowing with what you can do. Everything from night vision to climbing mountains. Daylight hours is a whole new experience, especially when you can watch street scapes anywhere in the world.

I wish I had Google earth last September when my eldest daughter went overseas last year with her husband. Early next year my youngest daughter and her husband are going to America on holidays, this time I will definitely be following their footsteps across the globe and their plane trips. Over the past month I have found that I could have followed their planes across the world and walked in their footsteps. Growing up as we did "Baby-boomers," there was a huge map of the world either on the wall of the bedroom or on the top of a desk. Now you can track planes all over the world, I feel like a kid again instead of a fifty five year old woman.

The Discovery Channel has a a section in Google Earth where you can watch the sunrise over the earth. I thought this was amazing, I have seen some morning sunrises in my time around "South Australia," and in my travels almost 35 years ago during my travels around New Zealand. Watching the sunrise around the globe on Google Earth is amazing.

The other section I found that amazed me, literally blew me away was "Historical Maps," instead of looking through books it is amazing to be able to find the maps on Google Earth. Tracing the footsteps through the actual globe, "Unreal!" Walking in our explorers footsteps as they discovered the world has been amazing.

Learning how to use Google Earth has been an exciting experience for me, throughout my life I have always had a dream of traveling the globe. This last month I have been traveling the globe at the click of the mouse, to click on Digital Globe and all of a sudden you mountains popping up over the section you are looking at, to some one like me it is amazing!.

In the world of today, you can watch the Satellites travel the globe, the International Space Station move around the globe. There is so much more on Google Earth that I have to work out yet, I know that my dream of traveling can be completed partly by Google Earth.

View From The Top

I am way behind in my trip logs, I think that it is time that I get caught up a bit. On May 4^th Kim and I decided to finally attack Dog Mountain. Dog Mountain is one of those hikes that everyone knows about, half have tried it, and fewer have succeeded. I might be exaggerating a bit, but from people I have talked to and reports that I have read, it seems that Dog Mountain is often underestimated as to how difficult it can be. May 4^th 2008 was a perfect day, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, it was hot, and most important it wasn't raining. In typical style we didn't arrive any too early (about 10:00am) it was already hot outside and the parking lot was half full. We didn't waste any time in getting started. There is no easing into this hike, it starts out uphill and doesn't stop till you reach the top. A couple hundred yards up the trail is the only toilet (vault toilet). The first part of the trail is a series of back to back switchbacks, the trail is steep and frankly I didn't get a lot of enjoyment out of this section. Before too long you come to a junction that allows you to choose between the short hard way or the long easy way. The short way is about 4/10 mile shorter than the other. We opted for the shorter route figuring that on the way back we would take the long way. From here the scenery is better and the trail is not quite as steep (in the beginning at least). After we started on the shorter trail we didn't see another hiker till the trails rejoined. Once that happened we go a better appreciation for how popular this trail is. The trail was crowded with people and their dogs. We joined the herd and headed up the massive hill. Eventually we broke out of the trees and got into an open area where we could see for miles and miles. This was a nice change that seemed to give an energy boost. Soon after we were at the final leg of the trail, just another 4/10 of a mile to go, I told Kim that she didn't have to wait for me so off she went leaving me in her dust. I slowly made my way up the last bit of steep trail. I was about 10 minutes from the top when I got a text message from Kim, "I'm waiting. How long till you get here?" was all she had to say. I had to laugh at her cockiness.

Success, I finally made it to the top. I was hot, very hot. So I looked around for that large patch of snow that I had seen from below. We came around the corner and there it was, like a gift from the hiking Gods there was a large patch of snow, ice cold freezing snow. I wasted no time, I climbed up the hill and laid my tired ass on the snow and began to cool off. This was a good spot, we sat and ate our lunch and enjoyed the view. We played at the top for a while before take the journey back down the mountain. On the way down we took the long route, this route was without a doubt more scenic. There are many views of the Columbia River and of the Gorge.

 So here is a small rant; People, don't let your dogs crap on the trail, and when they do, move the crap off the trail. Just because it is named Dog Mountain doesn't mean that your dog should be allowed to crap where ever it wants. I can't tell you how many piles of crap there were on the trail, it is very frustrating. If you can't clean up after your dog, then leave the mutt at home or better yet why don't you both stay home.

Getting There
Getting there couldnt be easier. From Vancouver just drive east on HWY 14 for about 48 miles and that is it or if you prefer here is a map that will get you all the way there.

I can see this option as a nice customer service tool for many companies websites. It works very well from the social network stand point and with more than one room option it can be a blast for those multitaskers like me.
