If I were buying a new computer and it came with a Windows disk, and Windows were installed with crapware...I think I would put the Windows disk in, re-install Windows, get Internet up and install the Google package.  Risk-free and Internet just don't mix.  Low risk exists, and this may fill the package at truly minimal expense for the home user.

Its amazing how many sessions at NECC this year are about collaboration and Web 2.0!  Global SchoolNet have been waiting for Web 2.0 for 10 years at least. And now its arrived, are they excited!

'Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything' sends educators a critical message. So let's take a look at the hottest collaborative tools, content, and implementation strategies.

Global SchoolNet - is all bout finding partner schools/classes/teachers overseas and project-based learning. They have over 3000 archived collaborative projects and 400 active projects you can get your class involved in today.  And if you can't find a project you like, you can upload your own, and then wait to hook up with an interested partner.

Lucie is a Google certified educator, and really pushed the Google Apps today. She told us how Google had told her they now want to be known as a 'collaborative tool' company, not just a search company.

Both of these educators are really excited about Global SchoolNet's Cyberfair - each school has only one entry. Students collaborate amingst themselves then publish on line, then they peer review others projects, and get feedback on their own. So it doesn;t end with creating a project - its all about feedback to make the next project even better.. The Competitions and Online Expeditions at the Global SchoolNet Site were their 'must see' for all educators interested in online learning.

These two presenters had collaborated online in putting together today's presentation. Yvonne had uploaded word, powerpoint, and spreadsheetsto google docs. Then Lucie went onto Google docs and made changes. Yvonne could see her changes, and they back and forthed for a while. They collaborated for some time, before meeting F2F only 30mins before the presentation!

They love Google docs - its free, its cloud-computing, its cross-platform  - PC and Mac.

I use it to share documents and collaborate information. Great for To Do lists, Planning Projects/Vacations, Organisations and general business use.

The best thing about it is you can create documents online and work on the document at the same time with any user with an internet connection. If both people update the same data it prompt you to resolve the conflict with no data loss. You can create Spreadsheets, Documents and Presentations. (I was deliberate not to mention any of the Microsoft office products as these work quite differently!!).

You can Import and Export documents to and from your Google account and this works okay however if you have word documents with tables and special formatting you might need to work on it after importing.

I read on TechCrunch today that Google just beat out Microsoft to provide email service to 1.5 million students in Australia.  Highlights are:

• BETTER:  With Gmail, students will have 6GB of storage.  With Exchange/Outlook, they had 35MB.
• FASTER: It took Microsoft 4 years to roll our Exchange/Outlook to all students.  Gmail will be rolled out by the end of this year.
• CHEAPER:  The Google contract is AU$9.5 million over 3 years.  The Microsoft contract it replaces was $33 million over 3 years.

For years, people have been talking about web-based applications replacing their desktop counterparts.  But it's been slow to happen.  Historically, desktop applications have had a few key advantages:  they were faster (because processing happens on the local machine), they had better UI's (due to limitations of HTML), and they could be used both online and offline.  Desktop apps also have their disadvantages; namely, that they are hard to deploy/update/manage and they have to be written for each operating system they support.

But I think we've reached a tipping point where web apps are better in every way.  Email is a great example.  My company uses Exchange/Outlook for email and it works OK.  But for email "power users", Outlook is really slow -- to the point that it impacts my productivity.  Outlook and Exchange just can't handle email accounts with thousands (or tens of thousands) of messages.  And Outlook doesn't have a decent search feature (so I use Google Desktop).

Gmail provides all of the same basic functionality as Exchange/Outlook, but it effortlessly handles large volumes of mail.  And I think the Gmail UI is actually better than Outlook's UI.  And of course there's no software to install -- it's all centrally managed by Google.

If you run a small business, you'd be crazy not to use the whole suite of Google Apps -- email, calendar, work processing, etc.  Over time, big companies will come to the same conclusion.  Microsoft has enjoyed a monopoly in the apps business for a long time, but they're coming under full-scale attack.  It may take a few years to see the effect because Microsoft is so entrenched in corporate America and owns the de-facto standards for electronic documents.  And of course they'll roll out their own (lame) web-based versions of their Office apps to stem the bleeding.  But over time better, faster, cheaper always wins.

And since everyone on the team (barring me) loved the Gmail interface, I acquiesced to their wishes. I shouldn't have. Six months later we are getting frustrated by schizrophrenic nature of the Google Mail system. At the time, these ideas looked like they were all such great ideas in theory -- but six months later we are all experiencing all sorts of problems with Google Mail.

Messages are either not getting sent or being lost by the system. Several people have complained about not receiving replies, even after we have sent them back. The mail system hangs up and you keep waiting for something to happen. And don't get me started on the sub-par IMAP features of the system. How is one supposed to run a business on such an unreliable platform? The integration of Google's services remains a distant dream, reminding us of the limitation of its competence beyond search and advertising.

And in order to get support we would need to upgrade to a premium version of the service that could set us back by $1,200 a month year. I don't mind paying, but if their recent track record is any indication, I might as well light a cigar with 12 $100 bills. For the longest time I though we were the only ones with this problem. Apparently not. At least two other friends with startups who are using Google Apps for their domain are finding similar issues.

That is why I feel terrible for those 1.5 million Australian school kids who will now have to use Gmail instead of Exchange/Outlook. In some ways it's like jumping from fire into the frying pan (being heated in that fire.)

This is an exciting change, because the email web client is quite old, does not support html emails, has limited address book features, and is very poor at managing emails in folders.  Hopefully the new EC webmail will be much better than the last!

It would be great if the university directory (e.g. Lecturer's email addresses) was accessible directly from the webmail interface, and if there was support for calendar with your timetable and lecturer's office hours, assignment due dates, readings for a week, etc.  All that information is put onto Cecil (Auckland's enterprise learning tool) at some stage, so I it might as well be accessible from a tool that provides value.  Perhaps even implementing Google docs for use in group assignments would be useful.

It's very nice to see progress in this space... so often your spirit for the adoption of new technologies in large organisations is crushed by the bureaucracy in that organisation.

There is a lot of talk about delivering cloud or elastic computing platforms, a lot of CxO's are taking this all in and nodding enthusiastically, they can see the benefits.. so make it happen!....yesterday.

Moving your services to the cloud, isn't always about giving your apps and data to Google, Amazon or Microsoft.

You can build your own cloud, and be choosy about what you give to others. building your own cloud makes a lot of sense, it's not always cheap but its the kind of thing you can scale up (or down..) with a bit of up-front investment, in this article I'll look at some of the practical; and more infrastructure focused ways in which you can do so.

Your "cloud platform" is essentially an internal shared services system where you can actually and practically implement a "platform" team that operates and capacity plans for the cloud platform; they manage it's availability and maintenance day-day and expansion/contraction.

You then have a number of "service/application" teams that subscribe to services provided by your cloud platform team... they are essentially developers/support teams that manage individual applications or services (for example payroll or SAP, web sites etc.), business units and stakeholders etc.

Using the technology we discuss here you can delegate control to them over most aspects of the service they maintian - full access to app servers etc. and an interface (human or automated) to raise issues with the platform team or log change requests.

I've seen many attempts to implement this in the physical/old world and it just ends in tears as it builds a high level of expectation that the server/infrastructure team must be able to respond very quickly to the end-"customer" the customer/supplier relationship is very different... regardless of what OLA/SLA you put in place.

However the reality of traditional infrastructure is that the platform team can't usually react as quick as the service/application teams need/want/expect because they need to have an engineer on-site, wait for an order and a delivery, a network provisioning order etc. etc (although banks do seems to have this down quite well, it's still a delay.. and time is money, etc.)

Virtualization and some of the technology we discuss here enable the platform team to keep one step ahead of the service/application teams by allowing them to do proper capacity planning and maintain a pragmatic headroom of capacity and make their lives easier by consolidating the physical estate they manage. This extra headroom capacity can be quickly back-filled when it's taken up by adopting a modular hardware architecture to keep ahead of the next requirement.

Traditional infrastructure = OS/App Installations

• 1 server per 'workload'
• Silo'd servers for support
• Individually underused on average = overall wastage
• No easy way to move workload about
• Change = slow, person in DC, unplug, uninstall, move reinstall etc.
• HP/Dell/Sun Rack Mount Servers
• Cat 6 Cables, Racks and structured cabling

The ideal is to have an OS/app stack that can have workloads moved from host A to host B; this is a nice idea but there are a whole heap of dependencies with the typlical applications of today (IIS/apache + scripts, RoR, SQL DB, custom .net applications). Most big/important line of business apps are monolithic and today make this hard. Ever tried to move a SQL installation from OLD-SERVER-A to SHINY-NEW-SERVER-B? exactly. *NIX better at this, but not that much better.. downtime required or complicated fail over.

This can all be done today, virtualization is the key to doing it - makes it easy to move a workload from a to b we don't care about the OS/hardware integration - we standardise/abstract/virtualize it and that allows us to quickly move it - it's just a file and a bunch of configuration information in a text file... no obscure array controller firmware to extract data from or outdated NIC/video drivers to worry about.

Combine this with server (blade) hardware, modern VLAN/L3 switches with trunked connections, and virtualised firewalls then you have a very compelling solution that is not only quick to change, but makes more efficient use of the hardware you've purchased... so each KW/hr you consume brings more return, not less as you expand.

Now, move this forward and change the hardware for something much more commodity/standardised

Requirement: Fast, Scalable shared storage, filexible allocation of disk space and ability to de-duplicate data, reduce overhead etc, thin provisioning.

Solution: SAN Storage, EMC Clariion, HP-EVA, Sun StorageTek, iSCSI for lower requirements, or storage over single Ethernet fabric - NetApp/Equalogic

Requirement: Requirement Common chassis and server modules for quick, easy rip and replace and efficient power/cooling.

Solution: HP/Sun/Dell Blades

Requirement: quick change of network configurations, cross connects, increase & decrease bandwidth

Solution: Cisco switching, trunked interconnects, 10Gb/bonded 1GbE, VLAN isolation, quick change enabled as beyond initial installation there are fewer requirements to send an engineer to plug something in or move it, Checkpoint VSX firewalls to allow delegated firewall configurations or to allow multiple autonomous business units (or customers) to operate from a shared, high bandwidth platform.

Requirement: Ability to load balance and consolidate individual server workloads

Solution: VMWare Infrastructure 3 + management toolset (SCOM, Virtual Centre, Custom you-specific integrations using API/SDK etc.)

Requirement: Delegated control of systems to allow autonomy to teams, but within a controlled/auditable framework

Solution: Normal OS/app security delegation, Active Directory, NIS etc. Virtual Center, Checkpoint VSX, custom change request workflow and automation systems which are plugged into platform API/SDK's etc.

As ever more services move into the "cloud" or the "mesh" then integrating them becomes simpler, you have less of a focus on the platform that runs it - and just build what you need to operate your business etc.

In future maybe you'll be able to use the public cloud services like Amazon AWS to integrate with your own internal cloud, allowing you to retain the important internal company data but take advantage of external, utility computing as required, on demand etc.

I don't think we'll ever get to.. (or want) to be 100% in a public cloud, but this private/internal cloud allows an organisation to retain it's own internal agility and data ownership.

I hope this post has demonstrated that whilst, architecturally "cloud" computing sounds a bit out-there, you can practically implement it now by adopting this approach for the underlying infrastructure for your current application landscape.

Just finished a very long day, the first day attending the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston.

I don't go to so many conferences. How ironic that it is also located in Boston, the site of the event that I attended last summer. Of all the towns in the world...

Although I title this Day 1, the event's organizers, as is often done apparently, treated today as Day 0, Monday being the more popular business travel day than Sunday. The sessions today were lengthy tutorials. A choice of two each, morning and afternoon. 9am to 12:30pm; then 1:30pm to 4:45pm. Then a further two hour panel discussion that finally ended at 7:30pm. 1. Social Computing Platforms: IBM and Microsoft.

This was a pair of dueling product demonstrations chaired by an analyst from the Burton Group, one of the respected observational consultancies in the IT field. The products on offer: IBM Lotus Connections vs. Microsoft Sharepoint.

This session was of particular interest to yours truly, as I have been participating as an ex officio (don't believe I have the status for official membership) of a technical review board at HCA evaluating those two products, with the aim of adopting one of them for the enterprise.

Social media, Web 2.0, is what the world outside corporations has been using for quite some time: blogs, wikis, MySpace/Facebook and the like. Corporations, especially those with an influx of twenty-something college graduates they're hiring in unexpectedly large numbers, considering the state of the economy, due probably to unexpectedly large numbers of Boomer retirees, find that these new employees expect Web 2.0 tools in the workplace to mirror those they use in their personal places.

As the two foremost providers of collaboration software in the enterprise space, IBM Lotus and Microsoft have responded to the demand with their competing products.

Of the two, Lotus Connections tells a better, more comprehensive, prettier story. Microsoft Sharepoint is spare to the point of a Google-like stark simplicity.

They both have their strengths. At this stage in their development, I would have to give the nod to Connections. I haven't used it yet, although the plan is to start testing it shortly after my return. But I have used Sharepoint, and after today's presentation I know I will like Connections, sight unseen, better.

2. Unified Communications Comparative Analysis.

This session was paneled by a representative from Frost & Sullivan, another respected observational consultancy. Five different vendors spent about 25 minutes each presenting their interpretation of UC, the convergence of telephonic communications, heading more and more toward VOIP, with web based collaboration tools such as instant messaging, web conferencing (my two areas of concentration at HCA), audio conferencing, video conferencing, etc.

A colleague and I will be exploring some of the elements of UC that will be available as we roll out our update to IBM Lotus Sametime mid-summer, so this session also held much interest.

The five presenters all came at the field from their own positions of strength. IBM Lotus has the software killer app in the form of Sametime, which has long sported integration with IP telephony and even with conventional wired audio conferencing, although we at HCA are only now on the cusp of getting to that rarified version. Many of the other vendors have partnered with IBM to offer their own integrations with Sametime. The idea is to be able to look at a small browser with lists of frequently accessed colleagues (the wretchedly named "buddy list"), and click to instant message, or click to place a PC to PC call, or click to place a PC to land line call, etc.

It's good stuff, converging toward the point where it won't matter where you are, what phone you have near you, your colleagues will find you and you them, just by selecting them from that browser. As our Frost & Sullivan analyst pointed out, the bad news is that last year's buzzword of work - life balance now becomes this year's trend of work - life blending. Not necessarily a welcome development for us codgers; but definitely 2.0 for the kids.

For all of the vendors, the low hanging fruit in this business is VOIP, which offers quantified return on investment (the holy ROI), and even there, my employer is only slowly getting there, mainly by mandating that all green field (i.e., new) sites use that better mousetrap for telephony. Legacy sites, such as the infrastructure including thousands and thousands of long since depreciated but to our CFO perfectly useful PBX phones, will get there only slowly. And that's with quantifiable ROI.

Unified Communications has a problem. Its advantages are more challenging to measure. Improved productivity is hard to put a number to. After all, he's only going to pay us for eight hours per workday, not the 168 hours per week that we'll be exposed to UC.

[In that vein: when I joined the group I presently work with in Corporate IT, it was a big deal to be issued a Blackberry. I was perhaps the 225th person in the organization to get one, and that only because I worked in the group that supports them, not that I was entitled by any rarefied status. The Blackberry impacted our organization from the top down; we originally got into the business because our CEO wanted to handle his email from the corporate jet.

[The VP of our group simply hated them; mainly I think because she resented people responding to their buzzing interruptions to her meetings. She's long since retired, and there are probably close to 4,000 Blackberries in the enterprise by now. I hope no one has told her!

[Even so, one would think that even, no especially, our CFO would insist that all 70,000 of us be issued them. Same as Unified Communication: 168 hours/week availability for the cost of 40, plus a couple of grand a year for the device and its airtime each. Cheap at the price, one would have thought. That's one reason why I'm not the CFO, I guess.]

All five vendors who presented today made good cases for their flavor of UC; all of them sounded, and their demos looked, pretty much the same. It's not anywhere near a mature industry yet, and I expect that there will be shakeouts and combinations galore in the next few years.

3. Evening in the Cloud

This was an intriguing panel discussion, flashily produced, regarding the bleeding edge technology called cloud computing. Cloud computing is what Google Apps and Salesforce.com and Amazon Web Services (tonight's three vendor presenters) would like all IT organizations to adopt wholesale.
