OK, right now I’d like to introduce my cats, named ‘Simba’ and ‘Karlo’

OK, right now I'd like to introduce my cats, named 'Simba' and 'Karlo'.

They both are quite ordinary farm cats (tomcats to be specific) that I 'rescued' from being drowned in a bucket if no one had 'adopted' them. One of them, Simba, is a light-/dark- gray tabby cat, the other one (Karlo, named after "Black Pete" of Disney's, just because he looks so ... and is called 'Kater Karlo' in the German versions of Disney's Comics), over here he would be described as a so called 'cow-cat', because of his painting ...

Just before it gets too boring for any possible reader of this post, here are the pictures:

[caption id="attachment_36" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="This used to be the place where my TV-set rested ... Introducing: Karlo!"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_37" align="alignright" width="245" caption="This is my favourite, just because it's my first one ... Introducing: Simba!"][/caption]

The reason I'm just now writing about my irrelevant cats is the following:

Simba got engaged in a heavy fight last night and got severely injured at the base of his tail. Tomorrow I'm taking him to the vet, and to prepare for it, I took his cat-carrier and placed it in my living-room to get him acquainted to it (again). Guess what happened? Right now he's sleeping happily in it and I think I'll just have to close the lid tomorrow morning
and can get off to the vet.

It could have been much harder, believe me, this is not the first time to take him to the vet ...

I was reading a book of Hugh Nibley’s once and I came across something I thought was interesti

I was reading a book of Hugh Nibley's once and I came across something I thought was interesting. I've since forgotten what it was that caught my interest, but I do remember reading something to this effect: men shouldn't play games of chance because chance doesn't exist. After thinking about this for a minute, I got past this idea that "men can't play games of chance if chance doesn't exist!" and moved on to the implications of what he was saying: if chance doesn't exist, then flipping a coin to determine who gets home field before a softball game isn't chance or luck. What if I had a say in whether the coin landed heads or tails?

So I did an experiment: each time I called a coin toss (I play a lot of softball and frequently call coin tosses), I would call it then visualize the coin landing as I had called it, or, I would let the other team captain call it and I would visualize the coin landing opposite what they called. I had a streak of about 11 coin tosses going until I finally lost one.

Now, the naysayers among you will cry, "Lucky streak!" But I'm going to differ with you on this point (though I won't beg). After all, doesn't it say, in D&C 59:21, that we offend God if we don't acknowledge his hand in all things? Why should we fail to acknowledge his hand in a coin toss?

Home field aside, I think Nibley has a point. So I've decided to try another experiment (one a little less self-gratifying): I've tried to eliminate the words "good luck" from my daily parlance. It has been a difficult thing to do, but I've met the challenge with moderate success. Now, instead of wishing people "good luck," I usually say something like "Godspeed." I must admit, it comes out awkward in a lot of circumstance: "I'm going to go take my final exam." "Godspeed." Sometimes I feel like William Wallace (or at least, Mel Gibson's version of Wallace). But in the end, I thought it was important enough to say that any "fortune" or what we call "luck" that comes our way comes from God and I wanted my language to reflect that.

But really, what difference do the subtleties of our language make?

Email a friend

And lucky us! We get to have an early start with Jimmy. (Yes, we're on a first name basis.) According to the NYT, he'll do nightly webisodes to work through the rough spots in his performance. They probably should have started this a few months ago if that's what they hope to accomplish. I have some serious doubts about Jimmy's ability to hold an entire show on his own. Let's hope he has some good writers.

Anyways, the webisodes will be short...maybe 10 minutes long. In the article, Lorne said,

“I’m going to post them at 12:30 every night, so people will begin to look for Jimmy at that time.”

I really doubt people will be flocking to stream video of Jimmy every night at 12:30. You see, Lorne, the beauty of the internet is that it's not TV. You don't have to schedule your life around it. It's available pretty much whenever you feel like reading, watching, posting, etc. something online. Crazy, I know. Maybe your goals should focus on viewers actually accepting that Jimmy has a show, rather than assuming they'll want to watch it and training them to do so. Just a thought.

It brought a happy lump to my throat to read that my good friend and mentor, Mr Barrie Crampton, has retired from Colne Valley High after 37 years.

Barrie became head of Sixth Form during my second year in it, and I was highly honoured to then go on and work alongside him in English lessons and extra-curricular activites such as the school magazine and TES Newspaper Day as a Teaching Assistant.

Barrie is an amazing man, who inspired and enthralled hundreds (if not thousands?) of students over the years. It was a pleasure to watch him teach; he knew the best way into the minds of every student, and was not afraid to recognise his own limits too, a noble quality sometimes lacking amongst people these days.

Such was my admiration and respect for him, I would often request to work with him each year, rather than leave our lesson rotas to chance. My departure from Colne Valley was not under the best of circumstances, and I feel now that I did let him down.

So Barrie, I do apologise profusely for doing so. But I wish you and Vicky every happiness in your retirement, you’ve earned it!

A quick post today on a post I read about a chap called Roo Reynolds.

I started taking a huge interest in reading blogs around a year ago, even after being in IT for nearly ten years.

What generally happens with blog reading, is that one starts by subscribing to a vast amount of blogs on a chosen subject and over time, the most interesting and informative of the blogs keeps providing the daily quick fix. A bit like someone having a coffee in the morning to get them on their way.

Anyway, I would like to wish all the best to Roo Reynolds on his move to BBC Vision from IBM and I will most certainly be keeping an eye on the next chapter of the story so to speak.

For a better description of the above, why not head over to Roo Reynolds's blog and read/hear it from the horses mouth as follows: - http://rooreynolds.com/2008/07/18/moving-on-from-ibm/

In an ever changing world, one can do worse that add the above to a list of essential blogs to read.

"Dear Bethea,

I have received my very stunning 24-karat Gold Cards and I have performed the Initiation Ceremony and have followed all of the enclosed instructions. Also, the Bracelet of 7 Jackpot Chances which with four casinos on Native American land so very close to where I reside, I feel I will be lucky. One casino opened last week...my sister in law won $5,000 and she deserves it, we were all happy for her. I enjoyed all your detailed reports and ypur explanations of each card. About the Five of Hearts, I truly believe that boredom is the real enemy of happiness."

I went to a San Rafael Chamber of Commerce Mixer this week. There was a raffle for half of the bucket of money which is based on how many people buy tickets.

I only bought one ticket because that's all it takes to win. As the woman with the bucket put the ticket in my hand, my friend Sharon said, "Jen's lucky. She's going to win." I thought to myself, "Cool, more than one person is wanting me to win. I have Sharon's good ju-ju working for me to. I am going to win."

As they were calling out the number for the $75 cash, I reached into my pocket to pull out my ticket. I couldn't find it. Darn, I thought, it's these shallow pockets in these dress pants. Then I remembered I put it in my back pocket so I wouldn't loose it. I found it.

The first number they called out for the winning ticket was an 8. My ticket number began with a 2.

My friend Sharon won.

Well... sometimes you are just left unprepared. You always read books about these heroic people who suffered great strife and triumphed in the end. Guess what, it's not that glamorous.

So what do you do when you maxed out all of your credit cards and your bank account is near empty and you have multiple bills to pay and only $12 from today's cashier tips? Well... you freak the fuck out. Then, if you're me, you blog. You blog and cry, cry and blog. Honestly, what could be better?

So while Tristan scours the papers for a job in this worthless, stagnant, recession-economy, I make up our budget. I cry, I blog, I "Excel" and I do mean the Microsoft version in which I am so grateful for allowing me to color-coordinate my debts. It really helps to see the ratio of Debt to Income when it's Red (negative) and Green (positive)

So here I am, wallowing in misery wondering if I can start selling YouTube videos of my cat. Do you think that's legal? Kittens all hopped up on Catnip! Only $1.99 a minute! WOOOo!!! Yeah, I didn't think that was legal either. This evening I skipped out on getting Splenda and PB&J at the grocery store. I can swipe Splenda packets from work and eat tomorrow. It's not more important than paying rent!

So while this sounds desperate, and it is, I have to have confidence that things will be fine. Tristan can take his WECA test on Thursday and hopefully get in. (P.S. We abandoned the CHP and went with Electrical Apprentices) I will continue working at the restaurant, because while it is only minimum wage, at least it's a full week's work. My convention work will hopefully smooth itself out and I'll get work again soon.

Right?

Because honestly, when has a recession ever affected anybody seriously?

I am not really complaining today; it’s just that I find it a blessing to have a bunch of writing jobs to do these days. I have not much luck at getting some writing gigs in PayPerPost, but this time, I had losts of luck getting more writing jobs from SponsoredReviews and SocialSpark. I even get some invitations to projects in Elance and oDesk.

These writing gigs had kept me paying my bills and more. In fact, I have just processed an application that permits me to upgrade my internet connection. I really wish the internet upgrade would be approved soon so that I could pursue better opportunities, like designing web pages and doing programming work aside in addition to these great writing gigs.

This is indeed a far from my first rants around of having no income at all. At this time my writing jobs and programming skills had sustained me well even if I do not get employed. I am definitely proud of what I have achieved so far.

The real challenge that I have at this point in time is how I could further sustain all my gigs to provide me an income that will not keep me dry for some months. Trusting everything to good luck is not enough.

This sudden line of jobs that keeps me busy leaves me less time to spend some time with my kid.

I was sitting outside on a bench. Silently reading a book. Out of the corner of my eye, a dark object started to come into view. A furry creature. Not a goblin (I don't think they have fur). It was a cat. A black cat. I can be superstitious for some odd reason. I try not to step on cracks (although there were times in my youth when I made sure I stepped on every single one), I throw salt over my shoulder, I kiss the clock at 11:11... I do a lot of stupid things like that. So, I noticed the cat. I noticed the path I was going to take to re-enter the building, seeing whether it would cross that path. It was creeping along slowly. It angled to the right of the quadruple glass doors and security pad. It spotted a hole in the meaningless chain-link fence protecting business enterprises from a stone wall. It turned back... took a glance... popped through the hole... looked back again as it meant to wink. Jumped up and crawled through the assumed small passageway between the buildings. It hadn't crossed my path. Excellent.

I've had a lot of good luck lately. This was just another sign. And I've had a lot of good luck in finding good music.

Music helps me through the bad times, the good times, the blah times and the every day times. That's why I like to share music. That's why I enjoy the company of many friends, lovers and family. Well... maybe not many lovers...

Here's a video by a band from Los Angeles... I like the concept. I like the song. I should see them live... they are called "The Movies" (how appropriate)... the song is called... well, I think you'll figure that out...

UPDATE: 1stbux.com admin is finally back with some payouts made. I decided to return all the referral links to 1stbux.com on this post.

I've just been to 1stbux.com, one of the sites that I had just mentioned previously where I had decided to invest a bit of my money. I already had reached my $5 payout and the status is still pending. The admin of the site has gone during the last week of the previous month for some personal problems and promised to do payouts by the 4th of July.

The site is still a business and I think the excuse of being away for a while is not acceptable. If this happened to be a business like Paypal or even Alertpay, then would we like to have a delayed payouts due to some personal reason? For a smaller site like 1stbux.com I can still understand when the admin is a bit away for a little while, but for a prolonged period - this is completely unacceptable!

Suggestions to Improve 1stbux.com Service

There are other options that the admin of the site can do. After all, the business is still his responsibility. One good option is to hire or delegate the payout work to someone, since it is noticeable that his PTC site member base is getting huge. The admin should realize that personal problems should not get in the way of the business, just like what I do with my work as a one-woman freelancer: the client does not take personal reasons especially if you'll be away for more than a week or so.

Right now, I would not recommend this site to new members, so I am taking away the referral links that I had written for 1stbux.com in a series of PTC articles. A lot of people had discovered this site, but with the kind of management that this admin have, then I do not find this to be a worthy site of joining.

Meanwhile, I will still continue my daily job of doing daily clicks - perhaps the poor guy will still pay me my $5. If he did that then my referral links will be up on this site.
