This friend was one of the first people Franca knew when she came to Canada from the States. This summer, Elsie is turning 80.

How can one celebrate a friend's 80th? What could Franca do to honour 80 years of quiet religious faith and simple kind-heartedness to all people? A birdwatcher, a gentle, bookish woman who never felt the need to make waves or say her piece...

...Except once. It was the time a reporter for their diocese newspaper made a reference to someone behaving "like an ostrich, with its head in the sand". This unfactually-sound metaphor had been used one time too many. Elsie saw red. She pulled out her stationery and picked up her pen. She wrote a letter to the editor, explaining why this expression should not be used. And she mailed it.

Franca remembers that time with great delight and pride, and decided to reminisce about it. She e-mailed everyone she knew, including E.g. and me, asking us to fill in the attached "membership form" and send it back to her. She promised to print off all copies of  returned forms and present them to Elsie at the birthday party. She would let Elsie know that others, too, have been apprised of the Truth About Ostriches and are now card-carrying members of the Justice to Ostriches Society.

Yesterday, I got my card and certificate in the mail!  I leave you with a photo, as I rush to get ready for work.

Pack it yourself, with her favorites...maybe include a bottle of wine or champagne.. or her favorite beer? Take her to a favorite park or lake... oh.. better yet.. take her for a secluded picnic under the stars :)

It is very sensual and sexy... buy her the whole set so she can bathe in it and rub on the cremes and lotions afterward...something you could offer to do for her ;) Once you smell this on her, you may not be able to keep your hands off of her anyway... :)

One final suggestion... Surprise her by recreating your first date or the first time you met.. was it a dinner out?.. a movie? a sporting event? ... Did you meet at a club? At a party? In high school? Or like my husband and I..an auto accident?? :lol: Might not want to recreate that one! ;) Anyway, if you enjoyed your first date or your first meeting.. it might be fun to go back to that moment and relive it and remember what first made you connect.. how you felt.. what you thought. It may not be possible to recreate it exactly or go to the exact place.. but, just that little trip down memory lane and the fact that you took the time would make her feel very special.... I know this sounds sappy... but, we girls love sappy!!! And sappy.. in the name of love... is very manly! (in this girl's humble opinion)

And since we are on the subject of what not to buy... it is NEVER a good idea to buy a woman a household appliance or excercise equipment... UNLESS she specifically asks for it. The outcome could be very bad otherwise!!

( i don't consider a Wii Fit to be exercise equipment, nor do I consider a Roomba to be a household appliance... those are just cool novelty items!! :P )

More than materialistic items, the thought matters. A dinner for two at an exclusive restaurant, or a day at a spa would be ideal gifts for women who are caught up with family and work. Gifts like appliances and gadgets are not very good gift ideas for women. A good gift would be something she would not make the effort to buy for herself. A gift to women must be an expression of feelings.

As far as equipment goes, people have their own preferences but there are a few things that all photographers most likely will appreciate.

Books or Magazine Subscriptions:

If your friend is a fan of Photoshop, you can't go wrong with a subscription to the magazine of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop professionals). Otherwise, Nature Photographer, Outdoor Photographer or digital photo books about a particular artist might be a good idea.

Cases and Bags:

As a photographer you need at least one bag, preferably two. Try Crumpler, Lowepro, Kata, Think Tank or Boda, where you can find special lens bags. Perfect for photographers who change lenses often and need easy access.

A good DSLR camera bag costs from $75, a point-and-shoot bag between $15-100.

Shoulder/neck strap:

A comfortable shoulder/neck strap is particularly important if you are out for a longer time period and have a larger camera.

Tripod:

One great tripod for tavel is Joby's Gorilla Pod. Larger cameras need a better and more expensive travel tripod.

Printer:

The price range for printers vary a lot, depending on what quality you'd like. If your friend already has a printer, why not buy more ink? That's always in demand.

Software:

The most popular editing softwares are Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

Lenses:

If the photographer already owns a DSLR (a digital SLR), lenses are a great buy. A mid-range lens, around 28-135mm, is a good start. Most people use 50mm. Otherwise, consider purchasing a telescope lens, or a wide-angle lens which is great for travel photography.

The maximum length depends on what type of photographing your friend does. For example, sports- and wildlife photographers want a longer lens than someone who only does portraits.

For a fun option, try Lensbaby. They bring one area of your photo into sharp focus, and surround the spot by gradually increasing blur. By bending your lens you can move the Sweet Spot to any part of your photo. Very convenient.

Flash:

What external flashes to use depends on the camera. Make sure to ask someone at the store, so you choose the right one. If your friend already has an external flash you might want to buy a flash bracket, which gives a nice angle of light by moving the flash up and away from the camera body. Another good flash accessory is the diffuser, which softens harsh flash light. Try Garo Fong's Light Sphere for $50. A Pop-Up Flash diffuser can be found at PUFFER - Pop-Up Flash Diffuser.

Batteries:

Extra batteries are always useful. Just remember to buy the right kind.

Memory cards:

Memory cards will always be appreciated, even if you don't buy the latest item. If you do want the best on the market, check out Eye-Fi, a 2 Gig WiFi card that acts as a memory chip and uploads images directly to your computer without the need of any cords or cables. You can get it for $99.99 at http://eye.fi/ This card can also upload images (JPEG only) to various photo sites.

Blank CDs and DVDs:

Apparently all normal CDs and DVDs have a life expectancy of about 10 years. To stay on the safe side, opt for Verbatim or Delkin that specialises in CDs and DVDs that last much longer.

Image storage:

Some travel photographers like to use small, portable hard drives. Hyper Drive is one of the better since it runs solely on battery power. It's not cheap though, expect to pay $279-$459 at Hyperdrive.com

Apart from these suggestions, you can always DIY and frame a photo or do a nice collage with different pictures. All photographers appreciate beautiful images.

Through the years we all collect memories.  Most people hold onto photos, however some are like me and hold onto everything! 

Yes, I keep most everything...from old school work to birthday cards, ticket stubs to old wedding and shower cards we received for our wedding.  I keep old letters from my friends, my husband and even my cat (yes, our cat gives my husband and I birthday cards...lol doesn't yours?). 

I even keep really old receipts...but we won't talk about that.  I blame that habit on my mother!

Some may say that we’ve become a lazy lot. We expect everything to come to us instead of seeking them- e-tickets, bills through Internet and most of all, purchasing almost everything online. But let’s call it a boon not a bane. It saves time and makes transaction simpler. You put the saved time to valuable use for some other chore, don’t you? Even if it’s a stress-busting siesta during the weekend, it’s a better option than a whole day out shopping. You won’t have too many complaints when you transact online.

1)  Use company discounts to establishments your work may give you. Some may have discount movie tickets, discount to retailers, themeparks, etc. 

2) Use coupons and rebates. Aside from saving using coupons, you can even get free stuff if you use rebates and cashback offers.

3) Use credit card rewards for presents. Rewards vary from Starbucks cards to Macy's Gift cards to hotel gift cards. 

4) Use search engines for coupon codes before checkout at online stores. You can save either on your total purchase or you shipping.

5) Subscribe to money saving websites for current listings of sales and special deals. Try Babycheapskate or Freebies4Mom.

Do you just crave unique items that can't be found at big-box stores?  Consider registering on Etsy.  While Etsy doesn't have an actual bridal registry just yet, many brides are finding a way around it.

Take Jes and Alex for example.  They loved this sweet sugar bowl and creamer by Etsy artist Whitney Smith (www.whitneysmith.etsy.com).  So they set up an Etsy account and added the item to their 'favorites'.  They then sent her a convo to let her know.  Whitney is a savvy Etsy seller, so she knew to change the listing to 'reserved' for the couple.

"I saw immediately that the only way to make this work would be to give them a custom listing, otherwise the item would sell and the friends might be put off buying unless they were experienced etsy users who knew to ask for the item again."  -  Whitney Smith

11 popsicle or tongue depressor sticks

glue

paint brush

felt shapes

a picture

Glue two sticks on each side, horizonals then verticals.  Break a stick in half to glue at the bottom so the picture doesn't fall out.

Let dry a few minutes.  Put about 1/4 in. of glue in a small bowl, I used an old mini playdoh container.  Give your child the brush and let them paint glue onto the frame and then apply felt shapes.  For Shapes - I bought 20 (~4$) 8x10 sheets of different color felt and cut off 1 8x2in strip of felt in each color. Then I cut the strips into squares, triangles, circles, ovals, moons. etc. of different sizes.  I put them in a ziploc bag and I keep it in a rubbermaid container with all the craft stuff.  The shapes have lasted thru about 4 crafts and are only 1/2 gone.

My daughter surprised me with this, she's not quite two yet, but she was able to do it almost completely by herself, after I showed her one time.  She did this frame completely on her own with a little coaxing to fill in all the empty places.

Cut construction paper or cardboard (I used a cereal box) and glue to the back of the frame.  Make sure to get a good seal on the edges that will hold the picture in place.  I took pictures of my daughter making this and I am going to put one of those in the frame.  I'm also going to superglue some magnets on the back so it can go on the refrigerator.  We may give this one to my mom...she's coming to visit in a few weeks!
