-i am happy that summer has finally decided to make an appearance in seattle. this is a rare occurrence. in fact we all sit in grey darkness, wait and pray to the weather gods for 10 months out of the year that Mr. Sun will say hello and come out for a few weeks... and when it comes it is just like heaven. i think that people here appreciate the sun more. and this year it has been especially nice since i am not really working. i wake up late, go to the office if i feel like it, do some home work, work out, and more importantly peer pressure my friends call in sick to hang out with me.

-a very sad thing happened though. we gave the love of my life up for adoption. not a child or baby. well actually to me he is....yes george my lovely and handsome one year old lovable, friendly, blanket humping, nose nudging, food begging, crotch smelling, dog ball licking, tennis ball fetching, bush peeing dog. this blog was named after him. i called the adoption place to see if he got adopted in hopes that he didn't so i could talk my mother into taking him back. sometimes i get sad thinking that he is in some dark concrete room with 50 other sad and lonely dogs being abused by some fat woman with heavy arms. my dad misses him. i just hope he goes to a good home. he is such a sweet fucking dog. so sweet i had to say a bad word after it to emphasize how sweet he is. that just reminded me that i need to cry now.

Ode to Joy - Muppet Style!

ARgh!!! I just shut down my laptop and decided to do something else. I cleaned house. Yuck! I'm not a dirty person, but I did the sort of Spring Clean type clean to get my mind off the computer. George showed up just as I finished wiping down the walls in the kitchen.

We went over to my laptop and he started looking at it. I buggered it up really well. In the end, I felt such an idiot. What I learned is that you can't treat any version of Linux like you would a Windows machine. I deselected a few things that just totally dumped my operating platform. Damn! Lucky for me, George put my old hard drive with Windows back in my machine and got me up and running. He's taking the other hard drive and will reformat it and reload Wolvix. Then, he and I are going to sit down and go through it program by program and get it all set up.

Of course since I started cleaning house, I had to finish. George chatted with me while I cleaned and then when I was too tired to think, he called Kevin. After they were done making jokes at my expense over the laptop, he had Kevin bring pizza over and we watched a couple episodes of Babylon 5.

Work has been easy this week. Just a few tech calls. People unplugging their Ruckus units and not being able to type in the generic password without someone holding their hand. Oh well. I guess I have a bit more sympathy for them after my screwup with my laptop.

I also helped Kelly move some stuff. She has more junk than anyone I know. I don't have as much stuff in my whole house as she does in two rooms. OMGS! Now I'm so sore it isn't funny. My hands feel like hamburger and we won't even talk about my feet. I'm so glad it is a light and easy day today at work!

So today Cenk Uygur weighs in on the current push to drill, drill, drill. Americans are just naive, vulnerable, and stupid to believe it right now, because gas prices are just that high. Americans are having the crack addict response right now...we've actually gotten to a point where we're thinking seriously about alternative energy sources, about changing our lifestyles...but then, here comes George W. Bush and all the oil companies and all their little ass-buddies in the corporate media trying to convince you, panicky and easily led American, that they're going to make it better by drilling the shit out of our coastline.

Cenk would like to point out the obvious that nobody's talking about, please:

One thing has been driving me crazy about this drilling debate -- everyone seems to assume that if we drill for oil in the US, that we will get the oil. And hence, we won't be dependent on foreign oil anymore. But we won't get anything, Exxon-Mobil will.

The oil that comes from that drilling will not be United States property (Republicans aren't suggesting we nationalize the oil companies, are they?). It will be the property of whichever oil company got the rights to that contract. They can then sell it to whoever they like -- and they will. They will sell it on the world market, so the Chinese will have just as much access to the oil that comes out of the coast of Florida as we will.

Ta-da! Putting aside the fact that it would take us years to even start drilling in these supposedly oil-rich locations, it wouldn't even our damned oil! That'll help us with our "pain at the pump"! No. It's just a cynical ploy to continue the fattening of the oil companies' gluttonous pockets on the backs of working-class Americans. Cenk continues:

The Republicans make it seem like we won't be dependent on foreign oil -- and that prices will go down in the US -- if we have our own oil. But it won't be ours. And it will be sold on the world market, so its effect on global oil prices will be even smaller.

When we ask the question of whether there should be drilling off the coast of Florida or in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, we should ask the question this way -- would you be comfortable with the Chinese or the Germans or Russians or the Saudis drilling on American land? Because for all intents and purposes, they will be.

Large multi-national firms like Exxon-Mobil are not US property. They sell to the world and their allegiance is to corporate profits. So, when they drill, they drill for the whole world, not just us. Some might find that heart-warming, but it certainly has nothing to do with the US having more oil or lower prices.

Some won't understand this. Some people don't understand how people can support the troops, while simultaneously decrying the military-industrial complex and a mission not worthy of our troops' sacrifices. (No, it's not confusing at all...some people just don't understand it.) But this is the exact same parallel: American oil companies are not America. So giving American oil companies carte blanche to rape even more American lands, seashores, and people, strangely doesn't equal supporting America...and it won't drop your gas prices one penny.

Take as long as you need to wrap your head around those concepts.

We'll wait.

But look what John McCain did today:

During a CBS interview on Tuesday, John McCain made a stone cold error on a subject about which he claims expert knowledge: the "surge" strategy in Iraq. In an interview with anchor Katie Couric, the Arizona Republican said, inaccurately, that the surge strategy was responsible for the much-touted "Anbar Awakening," in which Sunni sheiks turned against Al Qaeda, helping in turn to reduce violence in the country.

From the transcript:

Katie Couric: Senator McCain, Senator Obama says, while the increased number of US troops contributed to increased security in Iraq, he also credits the Sunni awakening and the Shiite government going after militias. And says that there might have been improved security even without the surge. What's your response to that?

McCain: I don't know how you respond to something that is as-- such a false depiction of what actually happened. Colonel MacFarland was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that's just a matter of history.

In fact, as Spencer Ackerman and Ilan Goldenberg have reported, the record firmly establishes the opposite: instead of being caused by the surge, the key signs of the Anbar Awakening occurred not only before that strategy was implemented, but before it was ever conceived.

Yet McCain's error was not seen by any CBS Evening News viewers. As MSNBC's Keith Olbermann noted, "CBS curiously, to say the least, left it on the edit room floor. It aired Katie Couric's question, but in response, it aired part of McCain's answer to the other question instead." (Ironically, this edit came on the same day that McCain's campaign released a video mocking the media's "love affair" with Obama.)

Cute. As I said before, as Jim Newell said, as Spencer Ackerman said, as Ilan Goldenberg said, as EVERY HONEST JOURNALIST HAS SAID, "the surge" had absolutely nothing to do with the Anbar awakening. The Anbar Awakening did, however, have everything to do with the drop in violence. So...

Now, McCain namechecks a Colonel MacFarland, so what's his part in all of this?

The fact remains, however, that the military official cited by McCain, then-Colonel Sean MacFarland, described the Anbar Awakening in September 2006 -- four months before the "surge" was even announced -- noting that tribal leaders were "stepping forward and cooperating with the Iraqi security forces against Al Qaeda." Moreover, a military review written by MacFarland notes that his unit actually left Anbar before most of the surge troops arrived; his success in the region came between June 2006 and February 2007.

Why is McCain doing this? Because this is all he has. His mythical maverick success with Teh Surge is the only thing he can pretend to lay claim to as a success. If the Surge myth falls apart, McCain's candidacy falls apart. It's already hanging by a thread...

In case you don't remember the timeline of "the Surge," or, let's be honest, in case you weren't really paying attention at the time, here's a handy review:

In January 2007, when George W. Bush decided to pour more American soldiers into Iraq and escalate the U.S. troop commitment there he was responding to domestic politics. The Democrats were about to take over both houses of Congress and the Baker-Hamilton Commission Report had issued an indictment of the administration's lack of a diplomatic track in ending the conflict. Defiant, petulant, and immature as ever, Bush launched what his handlers called a "surge" to lock in the policy as the Democrats took their places on Capitol Hill and to show his Uncle Jim and his Daddy that he didn't need or want their advice.

By January 2007, the occupation in Iraq had long been a strategic and humanitarian disaster. There was already widespread "low intensity" ethnic cleansing, and with the February 22, 2006 destruction of the Shia Al-Askari Mosque in Samarra there was unleashed a sectarian bloodbath that transformed the country. The Shia government, which controlled the Interior Ministry and much of the security apparatus, went on a rampage and shielded freelance death squads and militias that reaped their revenge on Sunni communities throughout the country. In a short period, the ancient city of Baghdad went from being mostly Sunni to being mostly Shia. There were 2 million people who fled the country and another 2 million internally displaced people. It wasn't very long ago Iraqis were torturing each other with Black & Decker power drills. I doubt if the underlying current of hate and the cycle of revenge have dissipated. But after the dust settled there was relative calm. It had nothing to do with the "surge."

Any "success" that McCain or Bush or Kenneth Pollack or Michael O'Hanlon or Michael Gordon or David Petraeus and all the rest of the war-hawks talk about is delusional because it is proclaimed by willfully ignoring the humanitarian costs; the price in blood and treasure the Iraqis have paid, and to a far lesser extent, the Americans too. McCain is celebrating a Pyrrhic victory. The United States destroyed Iraq in order to save it. Just take a look at Falluja, or Baghdad with its hideous blast walls and check points. That place will never be the same. In a just world the United States would pay reparations to Iraq for a hundred years.

Anyway. CBS didn't air the story on their nightly broadcast, but it seems they've put the full video online, so please, McCain supporters, watch this video of your candidate either lying about or failing to understand extremely recent history of which he was partially the author. You should know what kind of a pathetic hack you're voting for. (He graduated 894th out of 899 in his class at the Naval Academy! Did you know that?)

Desde que la Administración presidida por Bush retirara en marzo pasado la protección al lobo (Canis lupus), más de un centenar de estos ejemplares han sido asesinados en las cercanías de los Parques Nacionales de Grand Teton y Yellowstone. Exactamente 106 en tan sólo 110 días. Y otros cientos de lobos más caerán bajo las balas en los próximos meses.

Para una inmensa región montañosa que abarca seis Estados (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Oregon y Washington), los gestores medioambientales norteamericanos calculan un censo de 1.500 lobos, que pretenden reducir a tiro limpio hasta un máximo de 300, apenas una quinta parte.

Se pone fin así a muchos años y muchos millones de dólares invertidos en la recuperación de esta especie, iniciada en 1990 con la reintroducción del lobo en Yellowstone a partir de ejemplares traídos de Canadá.

Tras conseguirlo con muchos esfuerzos, pero no todavía como para lograr la viabilidad de estas poblaciones, los políticos descubren ahora que los lobos son molestos, matan ganado y enfadan a los ganaderos. Como han denunciado los grupos conservacionistas norteamericanos, la decisión de su exterminio, el segundo en un siglo, se ha tomado por intereses políticos y no científicos.

La carta de protesta que poueden firmar y enviar al Departamento de Interior de los Estados Unidos dice así:

Me parece inexcusable que más de 100 lobos grises en las Montañas Rocosas del Norte hayan sido asesinados desde que su Agencia les despojó de la protección de las especies en peligro de extinción en marzo pasado, y que más del 80 por ciento de la población de lobos puedan ser sacrificados con arreglo a las actuales leyes estatales.

El regreso de los lobos grises a las Rocosas del Norte es uno de los mayores éxitos de la vida silvestre. En el ParqueNacional de Yellowstone, en particular, es evidente comprobar cómo el regreso del lobo ha reavivado el ecosistema, permitiendo la recuperación de halcones, águilas, pequeños animales y árboles. La reducción de la población de lobos prevista por el gobierno federal, poniendo como meta conservar tan sólo 300 animales, pondrá de nuevo a esta emblemática especie al borde de la extinción.

Su organismo está encargado de proteger la vida silvestre, no de entregarla para asesinatos en masa. Por favor, garantizar un futuro saludable para los lobos de Yellowstone y el del norte de las Rocosas es garantizar la plena recuperación de los ecosistemas relacionados con ellos.

Todos los ciudadanos deben poder disfrutar de estos magníficos iconos del Oeste americano, los de ahora y los de las generaciones venideras.

This is curious, not only because tea is one of the main stays of civilization in this country, as well as in Eire, Australia and New Zealand, but because the best manner of making it is the subject of violent disputes.

When I look through my own recipe for the perfect cup of tea, I find no fewer than eleven outstanding points. On perhaps two of them there would be pretty general agreement, but at least four others are acutely controversial. Here are my own eleven rules, every one of which I regard as golden:

* First of all, one should use Indian or Ceylonese tea. China tea has virtues which are not to be despised nowadays — it is economical, and one can drink it without milk — but there is not much stimulation in it. One does not feel wiser, braver or more optimistic after drinking it. Anyone who has used that comforting phrase 'a nice cup of tea' invariably means Indian tea.

* Secondly, tea should be made in small quantities — that is, in a teapot. Tea out of an urn is always tasteless, while army tea, made in a cauldron, tastes of grease and whitewash. The teapot should be made of china or earthenware. Silver or Britanniaware teapots produce inferior tea and enamel pots are worse; though curiously enough a pewter teapot (a rarity nowadays) is not so bad.

* Thirdly, the pot should be warmed beforehand. This is better done by placing it on the hob than by the usual method of swilling it out with hot water.

* Fourthly, the tea should be strong. For a pot holding a quart, if you are going to fill it nearly to the brim, six heaped teaspoons would be about right. In a time of rationing, this is not an idea that can be realized on every day of the week, but I maintain that one strong cup of tea is better than twenty weak ones. All true tea lovers not only like their tea strong, but like it a little stronger with each year that passes — a fact which is recognized in the extra ration issued to old-age pensioners.

* Fifthly, the tea should be put straight into the pot. No strainers, muslin bags or other devices to imprison the tea. In some countries teapots are fitted with little dangling baskets under the spout to catch the stray leaves, which are supposed to be harmful. Actually one can swallow tea-leaves in considerable quantities without ill effect, and if the tea is not loose in the pot it never infuses properly.

* Sixthly, one should take the teapot to the kettle and not the other way about. The water should be actually boiling at the moment of impact, which means that one should keep it on the flame while one pours. Some people add that one should only use water that has been freshly brought to the boil, but I have never noticed that it makes any difference.

* Seventhly, after making the tea, one should stir it, or better, give the pot a good shake, afterwards allowing the leaves to settle.

* Eighthly, one should drink out of a good breakfast cup — that is, the cylindrical type of cup, not the flat, shallow type. The breakfast cup holds more, and with the other kind one's tea is always half cold before one has well started on it.

* Ninthly, one should pour the cream off the milk before using it for tea. Milk that is too creamy always gives tea a sickly taste.

* Tenthly, one should pour tea into the cup first. This is one of the most controversial points of all; indeed in every family in Britain there are probably two schools of thought on the subject. The milk-first school can bring forward some fairly strong arguments, but I maintain that my own argument is unanswerable. This is that, by putting the tea in first and stirring as one pours, one can exactly regulate the amount of milk whereas one is liable to put in too much milk if one does it the other way round.

* Lastly, tea — unless one is drinking it in the Russian style — should be drunk without sugar. I know very well that I am in a minority here. But still, how can you call yourself a true tealover if you destroy the flavour of your tea by putting sugar in it? It would be equally reasonable to put in pepper or salt. Tea is meant to be bitter, just as beer is meant to be bitter. If you sweeten it, you are no longer tasting the tea, you are merely tasting the sugar; you could make a very similar drink by dissolving sugar in plain hot water.

Some people would answer that they don't like tea in itself, that they only drink it in order to be warmed and stimulated, and they need sugar to take the taste away. To those misguided people I would say: Try drinking tea without sugar for, say, a fortnight and it is very unlikely that you will ever want to ruin your tea by sweetening it again.

These are not the only controversial points to arise in connexion with tea drinking, but they are sufficient to show how subtilized the whole business has become. There is also the mysterious social etiquette surrounding the teapot (why is it considered vulgar to drink out of your saucer, for instance?) and much might be written about the subsidiary uses of tealeaves, such as telling fortunes, predicting the arrival of visitors, feeding rabbits, healing burns and sweeping the carpet. It is worth paying attention to such details as warming the pot and using water that is really boiling, so as to make quite sure of wringing out of one's ration the twenty good, strong cups of that two ounces, properly handled, ought to represent.
