<description><![CDATA[The 2008.0 final release is out! Code-named &#8220;It&#8217;s got what plants       crave,&#8221; th]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>The 2008.0 final release is out!</strong> Code-named "It's got what plants crave," this release contains numerous new features including an updated <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/installer/">installer</a>, improved hardware support, a complete rework of profiles, and a move to Xfce instead of GNOME on the LiveCD. LiveDVDs are not available for x86 or amd64, although they may become available in the future. The 2008.0 release also includes updated versions of many packages already available in your ebuild tree.</p>
<ul>
<li> <strong>Updated installer</strong>: The installer now only performs networkless installations using the packages and ebuild tree on the LiveCD. It also contains numerous fixes for extended and logical partitions.</li>
<li> <strong>Improved hardware support</strong>: Moving to the 2.6.24 kernel added many new drivers for hardware released since the 2007.0 release.</li>
<li> <strong>Complete rework of profiles</strong>: Restructuring profiles allowed significant cleanup of redundancies, reducing developer maintenance and confusion. The difference for you is that profiles now appear in <span class="path" dir="ltr">/usr/portage/profiles/</span> under <span class="path" dir="ltr">default/linux/</span> instead of <span class="path" dir="ltr">default-linux/</span>. See the <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-upgrading.xml">upgrading guide</a> for more details.</li>
<li> <strong>Xfce instead of GNOME on the LiveCD</strong>: To save space, the LiveCDs switched to the smaller Xfce environment. This means that a binary installation using the LiveCD will install Xfce, but you're still free to build GNOME or KDE from source.</li>
<li> <strong>No LiveDVDs on x86 or amd64</strong>: In the interest of getting the release out, the <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/">release engineering team</a> decided to postpone LiveDVDs because of problems in their generation. They may show up later—if so, we'll let you know.</li>
<li> <strong>Updated packages</strong>: Highlights of the 2008.0 release include       <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage/">Portage</a> 2.1.4.4, a 2.6.24 kernel,       Xfce 4.4.2, gcc 4.1.2 and glibc 2.6.1.</li>
</ul>
<p>A big thanks goes out to our <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/">release engineering team members</a> for their hard work over many months to turn 2008.0 into reality.</p>
<p><strong>Get the new release from our <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml">"Get Gentoo!" page</a></strong>.</p>

<description><![CDATA[I said this briefly on the gentoo-dev list, and I want to expand on it here. The council is Gentoo]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a title="gentoo-dev post" href="http://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-dev/msg_77483f815291eead6f9b0e2f0dd13541.xml" target="_blank">I said this briefly on the gentoo-dev list</a>, and I want to expand on it here. The <a title="Gentoo Council" href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/council/" target="_blank">council</a> is Gentoo's leadership, and it's composed of 7 people elected by all Gentoo developers using a <a title="Condorcet method" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condorcet_method" target="_blank">Condorcet-style ranking vote</a>. Of the 7 people on the old council, 5 of them decided to run again and <strong>every single council member who ran was re-elected</strong>.</p>
<p>This is significant because the re-election was forced over miscommunication about a meeting, and this created some serious conflicts with a sentence in the <a title="GLEP 39" href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/glep/glep-0039.html" target="_blank">Gentoo Linux Enhancement Proposal that created the current structure</a>, including the council. I consider this a mandate, showing that <strong>Gentoo developers have confidence in the existing leadership doing what's best for Gentoo</strong>.</p>
<p>This was your chance to say yes or no, and you gave us a resounding yes. Since it isn't often we hear much from the vast majority of developers, this really means a lot to me in saying which directions we should go, based on <a title="council results" href="http://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-council/msg_d9ab2582c93170ffda860d29ad0d2f7c.xml" target="_blank">who you voted for</a> (<a title="graphs" href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/council/voting-logs/council-2008-vote-distribution.txt" target="_blank">graphs here</a>). <strong>My interpretation is that you like what's going on now and where we're talking about going.</strong> I'd really love to hear more input from those of you who don't normally speak up, though. What can we do for you?</p>
<p><strong>P.S. <a title="2008.0 released" href="http://www.gentoo.org/news/20080706-release-2008.0.xml" target="_blank">The 2008.0 release is out</a>.</strong></p>

<description><![CDATA[Devs, listen up&#8211;voting closes for the Gentoo council at 23:59 UTC today (Friday). Here I]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Devs, listen up--<strong>voting closes for the <a title="Gentoo council" href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/council/" target="_blank">Gentoo council</a> at 23:59 UTC</strong> today (Friday). Here I'm going to tell you my surprise underdog picks. <strong>By underdog, I mean people who I didn't realize I was going to rank fairly highly for before doing research</strong>. I dig through all my mailing-list archives of -dev, -project and -core, looking at all the recent posts by each candidate. Then I decided whether they expressed enough opinion on global directions, whether they were active enough on-list, and whether I agreed with their ideas about where Gentoo should go. Based on that, here's my underdogs:</p>
<ul>
<li>jer (HPPA arch team)</li>
<li>leio (wxWidgets, GNOME maintainer)</li>
<li>ulm (emacs maintainer)</li>
<li>dev-zero (cpp, postgresql, samba, python maintainer)</li>
</ul>
<p>Other than them, I strongly endorse our QA lead, <strong>Halcy0n</strong> (also on GCC porting, toolchain, and C++ teams). I'm not listing anyone who's been on the council before, because that isn't as interesting. There are other candidates who I think have the technical qualifications--I'm not voting for some of them because <strong>I think having a strong community that follows and enforces its own Code of Conduct is not just important but <a title="HOWTO make Gentoo great" href="http://dberkholz.wordpress.com/2007/10/08/howto-make-gentoo-great/" target="_blank">vital for Gentoo to move down the path of greatness</a>.</strong></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last night, Dave Airlie released libdrm 2.3.1, which set the stage for all the pieces of the X.Org 7.4 prereleases to actually work (with a couple mesa patches). <strong>If you'd like to test 7.4, here's how</strong>. This assumes you're already running an ~arch (testing) system--if you aren't, you might want to hold off on testing hard-masked packages. <strong>This may not work with binary drivers</strong>--particularly ati-drivers. It looks like nvidia-drivers has preliminary support for xorg-server 1.5.</p>
<p><code>echo "<br />
# xorg-server-1.5 prerelease<br />
=x11-base/xorg-server-1.4.99*<br />
=media-libs/mesa-7.1*<br />
x11-proto/dri2proto<br />
=x11-libs/libdrm-2.3.1*<br />
" &#62;&#62; /etc/portage/package.unmask<br />
emerge -va xorg-server<br />
emerge -va1 $(qlist -I x11-drivers)</code></p>
<p>I've still got 16 more packages to bump before everything's up to date, but the main parts are in place.</p>

<!--more--><!--noteaser--><br />
Ich will ungern alles neu in mehrere Playlists einsortieren müssen.

<pre>=www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.0*
=net-libs/xulrunner-1.9-r2
=dev-libs/nspr-4.7.1
<p><a href="http://ubuntu.blog.de/2008/02/25/firefox_3_deutsch~3777889#c6426623">http://ubuntu.blog.de/2008/02/25/firefox_3_deutsch~3777889#c6426623</a></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So I've heard a lot of hype about <a title="Gentoo Linux" href="http://gentoo.org/">Gentoo Linux</a> lately. I'm expecting, however, that it isn't mere hype. Having only experience with distributions such as Mandrake (now <em>Mindriva</em>), Red Hat, SuSE, and Ubuntu, all of which boast an exceedingly easy <acronym title="Graphical User Interface">GUI</acronym> setup application, Gentoo assumes nothing and sticks you right in the command line* the entire way through. Since Gentoo is all about choice, as they say, it should be expected that nothing is assumed of you: you must compile the source for the kernel, and every other aspect of the system. Likewise, something called USE flags are used as a means to optimize operating system performance based on your hardware--now <em>there's</em> something that certainly sets Gentoo apart from other distros.</p>
<p>Now, what really attracted me to Gentoo in the first place was their package management system, called Portage. Evidently it's written entirely in <a title="Python" href="http://python.org/">Python</a>, which lends credence to the true power of the language. Getting an updated list of all of the Portage/Ebuild trees is simple as:</p>
<p><code># emerge --sync<br />
# emerge --update world</code></p>
<p>Now that's just beautiful. Admittedly, there's still much reading to be done on my part before I delve into this install. Luckily, Gentoo's community appears to be quite active, and not to mention, the documentation is excellent (<a href="http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml">Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook</a>). To me, this is the next step of truly understanding how GNU/Linux works "behind the scenes."</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many people think of code as artwork in some way or another and consider good code something of elegance and beauty. While working today, I came across another example of that in a visual representation of a project I'm working on.</p>
<p>This image shows the call graph of the file I'm editing, which is one component of a much larger project. I made it with Python's <a title="hotshot" href="http://docs.python.org/lib/module-hotshot.html" target="_blank">hotshot</a> profiler and <a href="http://code.google.com/p/jrfonseca/">José</a> Fonseca's <a title="gprof2dot homepage" href="http://code.google.com/p/jrfonseca/wiki/Gprof2Dot" target="_blank">Gprof2dot</a>. Brighter colors mean more time is spent in those functions or their children, although it's hard to see at this size. Or does it show some sort of futuristic gun? Your call.</p>
<p><a href="http://dberkholz.wordpress.com/files/2008/06/callgraph.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-430" src="http://dberkholz.wordpress.com/files/2008/06/callgraph.png" alt="" width="720" height="80" /></a></p>
<p>The above callgraph shows every single function, but here's a profile generated with the same tools that shows only functions that use a certain percentage of time. You can actually see the colors:</p>

<p>Also, gehen wir's an. Laut der <a href="http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_setup_a_gentoo_bridge">Anleitung</a> muss ein Kernel-Modul her, also mal schnell <em></em></p>
<pre><em>make menuconfig</em></pre>
<p>und das entsprechende Teil aktivieren. Dann <em></em></p>
<pre><em>make</em></pre>
<p>und <em></em></p>
<pre><em>make modules_install</em></pre>
<p>Soweit alles klar.
<p>Testweise mal</p>
<pre><em>brctl addbr br0</em></pre>
<p>Geht nicht: "add bridge failed: Package not installed". Ok, hab was vergessen, alles klar.</p>
<pre><em>modprobe bridge</em></pre>
<p>Geht auch nicht: FATAL ...</p>
<p>Was soll das denn jetzt?
<p>Also, weiter im Text.

Stabilität ist eben doch was schönes.</p>

<description><![CDATA[Some of you might have read my previous blog post about the attack on Exherbo&#8217;s quote database]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Some of you might have read <a href="http://ahfaeroey.wordpress.com/2008/06/28/attack-on-exherboorg-machine/">my previous blog post</a> about the attack on <a href="http://quotes.exherbo.org/">Exherbo's quote database</a> that I wrote about yesterday. As promised I am going to write a follow up post about how this was handled and what the result of the cooperation with <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo</a>'s infrastructure team was.</p>
<p>First of all I would like to thank <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo</a>'s infrastructure team for acting quickly and very professionally. They reacted immediately after I posted <a href="https://bugs.gentoo.org/229895">the bug</a> and asked for the information they needed (log files) to compare with their own auditing results.</p>
<p>I would especially like to thank robbat2, KingTaco, Ramereth, solar and fox2mike who worked on the issue, reviewed log files and discussed how they were going to handle this incident.</p>
<p>I would like to clarify that <a href="http://www.exherbo.org/">Exherbo</a> harbours no ill will towards any of the companies (<a href="http://www.gni.com">GNi</a>, <a href="http://www.bytemark.co.uk/">Bytemark</a> and <a href="http://www.osuosl.org/">OSUOSL</a>). They are providing much needed hardware and infrastructure for many open source projects but have no role beyond as a sponsor.</p>
<p>No company is able to prevent their users from carrying out malicious actions from their network.</p>
<p>I also promised to give you an update based on the information that we received after <a href="http://ahfaeroey.wordpress.com/2008/06/28/attack-on-exherboorg-machine/">the blog post</a> and <a href="https://bugs.gentoo.org/229895">the bug</a> was created:</p>
<ul>
<li>Alex Howells (Astinus) has been removed from all Gentoo infrastructure and as you can read on <a href="https://bugs.gentoo.org/229895">bug #229895</a>, <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo</a>'s infrastructure team has informed all the developers via the <tt>gentoo-core</tt> mailing list about what happened.
<p> The developers received the following message (taken from <a href="https://bugs.gentoo.org/229895">the bug</a>):</p>
<blockquote><p>
   As reported on <a href="https://bugs.gentoo.org/229895">bug #229895</a>, on 27 Jun 2008 at 19:04 UTC, there was unwarranted traffic sent to <a href="http://quotes.exherbo.org/">http://quotes.exherbo.org/</a> and some of the traffic involved originated from various <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo Linux</a> infrastructure machines. The <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo</a> infrastructure team conducted an audit based on logs from the machines as well as those provided by <a href="http://www.exherbo.org/">Exherbo</a>'s infrastructure team. Based on results of our audit and the user's admission via email, we have concluded that the said actions were taken by one of our developers named astinus.</p>
<p> We have taken appropriate action and have removed the developer in question from <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo Linux</a> infrastructure. We sincerely apologize to the administrator of <a href="http://quotes.exherbo.org">quotes.exherbo.org</a> for the involvement of <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo</a> infrastructure machines.
   </p></blockquote>
</li>
<li>Alex Howells also decided to "remove" his <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/">LinkedIn</a> profile so the link from my <a href="http://ahfaeroey.wordpress.com/2008/06/28/attack-on-exherboorg-machine/">former blog post</a> is not working anymore.</li>
<li>Since <a href="http:/www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo</a>'s infrastructure team handled this so well I see no reason to contact their <tt>abuse</tt> contact from the respective networks where the machines are located.</li>
<li>I would also like to point out that Astinus was not kicked out of <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo</a>. He left on his own after <a href="https://bugs.gentoo.org/229895">the bug</a> was filed. Astinus and I talked on <tt>IRC</tt> and while we still disagree about whether it was an attack or a prank we agreed that this is now a closed chapter and Astinus apologized to me and I accepted.</li>
</ul>
<p>Once again I would like to thank the <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/">Gentoo</a> infrastructure team on behalf of the <a href="http://www.exherbo.org/">Exherbo</a> development team for their quick response and their very professional way of handling this issue.</p>
<p>Alex.</p>

<p><strong>Aggiornamento.</strong><br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I'm quite happy today. Not because I had lots of fun at yesterday's party, for which I'm completely dead after having danced salsa for more than 3 hours. I'm really happy because the Gentoo Infrastructure Team investigated what the Exherbo team reported (see details in my latest post).</p>
<p>This, incidentally, means that nobody can act like a sheriff with complete impunity. I won't comment on the outcome of it, not because I dislike it, but because I think it wouldn't be fair after all. If someone is interested, they can read the bug themselves.</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> Alexander wrote a followup post about the whole thing: <a href="http://ahfaeroey.wordpress.com/2008/06/29/follow-up-attack-on-exherboorg-machine/">Follow-Up: Attack on Exherbo.org machine</a>. I can't do anything else than joining him in his thanks to the Gentoo Infrastructure Team.</p>

<p><strong>PS:</strong> Some people have shown disagreement with the way I write stuff (not with what I write about). It seems I'm overly negative and bad publicity for Gentoo. If you feel that way, I apologise. My intention is to give information that I honestly think is relevant about both Gentoo and myself. I'll try to be less negative in future, even though I'll still post about what I think is relevant and/or important.</p>

I played with the <a href="http://www.freesbie.org/">Freesbie</a> LiveCD last night and my computer didn't blow up. I was only able to get <strong>X </strong>running with the <strong>vesa</strong> driver and I didn't even try to get my wireless card working, but I spent over an hour playing with the system internals and frankly, it wasn't that scary. Then something happened which made me feel like advancing my schedule for trying out FreeBSD. And it was through no fault of Gentoo's.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>When I went to boot from the Freesbie LiveCD, I forgot to choose CD as a temporary startup device and linux started to boot. Well I didn't want to wait for it to load, login, and then restart again, so I quickly popped the power button. It was <em>just </em>as the system was starting and only <em>one</em> partition had been mounted. But lo and behold, after I was through playing with FreeBSD, I rebooted into linux to find all my <strong>jfs</strong> partition tables scrambled. Normally, not a big deal for me. Just log in as my normal user, <strong>su</strong> into root, and run a simple little bash loop on all the partitions using <strong>jfs</strong>:</p>
<pre>
<div style="overflow:auto;"><span style="color:#ff0000;">vault </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">~ #</span> for i in /dev/sda8 /dev/sda9 /dev/sda10 /dev/sda11; do fsck.jfs $i; done</div>
</pre>
<p>There was only one problem this time. I had been playing with the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zsh">Z shell</a> for the last few days and had just switched my normal user and root over to use it as default instead of <strong>bash</strong>. Well! Turns out <strong>zsh</strong> needs a certain .so file that is kept in the <strong>/usr</strong> partition. Not very smart, if you ask me. I feel like the shell, of all things, should be as self contained as possible. Anyway, needless to say, my new default shell barfed on me after it couldn't find the files it needed, and I was stranded. Yeah yeah, I could have maybe used Freesbie and done a chroot, but... what a pain. Finally my girlfriend came home and I had her sign in under her account name, which I had not switched the shell on. Then <strong>su -</strong> and did my little magic. But still! What a royal pain that was.</p>
<p>So here I am. I just backed up all my stuff, and wiped the hard drive clean ;-)</p>
<p>I'm going to be trying <strong>ZFS</strong> as my file system following <a href="https://www.ish.com.au/solutions/articles/freebsdzfs">this tutorial</a>. More news and HOWTOs later.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I can't find a different word to describe this situation. I'm usually very proud of being part of Gentoo, even if I don't agree with every single thing Gentoo does (hey, unlike others, I'm able to live with people disagreeing). But what happened yesterday is really really sad and shameful.</p>
<p>The explanation is long but, fortunately, <a href="http://ahfaeroey.wordpress.com/">Alexander</a> wrote a nice blag post explaining what happened:</p>
<p><a href="http://ahfaeroey.wordpress.com/2008/06/28/attack-on-exherboorg-machine/">Attack on Exherbo.org Machine</a></p>
<p>Do read it. It is important to know the kind of people you work with, and the kind of people you trust certain resources to. I hope Gentoo does something about this. It is of such a bad taste that I don't want to get started... You can follow the process here: <a href="https://bugs.gentoo.org/229895">https://bugs.gentoo.org/229895</a> . I really do hope Gentoo does something.</p>

<p><strong>Disclaimer: </strong> I've been using the same install since 2006, so some of the things in my config files might be outdated or unnecessary. These files are provided for your and my reference only.</p>
<p>I'm not going to list every little step and how to do it, because if <em>I</em> did it, the instructions are already available somewhere. Most valuable resource award goes to:</p>

<p>Without further ado:</p>
<h2>Output of <em>lspci -v</em></h2>
<p>Note that the driver each piece of hardware is using is listed. Very handy.</p>

<h2>make.conf</h2>
<p><strong>Disclaimer: </strong>Be <em>very</em> careful using my make.conf file! Only take what you really want. I have a lot of strange things set in my make file, for example I have chosen to run an "x86" stable system. You may prefer "~x86" unstable for more bleeding-edge packages. I have Japanese set as a default language on my system, and a lot of my <em>USE flags</em> are very specific for pieces of hardware I own, etc. <strong>Know what each <em>USE flag</em> does before you set it globally in make.conf!</strong> I used to see some people complain about the <strong>"<a href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/hardened/">hardened</a>"</strong> flag breaking packages, but I have had it set for over a year and rarely if ever have had a problem. Generally if a package fails to build with "<a href="http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/hardened/"><strong>hardened</strong></a>", the package maintainer disables it manually, so if you're interested in a more secure system, I do recommend this flag. Finally, I have my Portage TMPDIR in a non-standard place. Be careful! However, CHOST, CFLAGS and VIDEO_CARDS are set to safe options for the T43.</p>

# Build-time functionality
# ========================
#
# The USE variable is used to enable optional build-time functionality. For
# example, quite a few packages have optional X, gtk or GNOME functionality
# that can only be enabled or disabled at compile-time. Gentoo Linux has a
# very extensive set of USE variables described in our USE variable HOWTO at
# http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&#38;chap=1
#
# The available list of use flags with descriptions is in your portage tree.
# Use 'less' to view them: --&#62; less /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc &#60;--
#
# 'ufed' is an ncurses/dialog interface available in portage to make handling
# useflags for you. 'emerge app-portage/ufed'
#
# Example:
USE="X anthy bash-completion cairo cjk dvd dvdread firefox gtk hal \

# Host Setting
# ============
#
# DO NOT CHANGE THIS SETTING UNLESS YOU ARE USING STAGE1!
# Change this line as appropriate (i686, i586, i486 or i386).
# All modern systems (even Athlons) should use "i686-pc-linux-gnu".
# All K6's are i586.
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"

# Host and optimization settings
# ==============================
#
# For optimal performance, enable a CFLAGS setting appropriate for your CPU.
#
# Please note that if you experience strange issues with a package, it may be
# due to gcc's optimizations interacting in a strange way. Please test the
# package (and in some cases the libraries it uses) at default optimizations
# before reporting errors to developers.
#
# -mcpu=&#60;cpu-type&#62; means optimize code for the particular type of CPU without
# breaking compatibility with other CPUs.
#
# -march=&#60;cpu-type&#62; means to take full advantage of the ABI and instructions
# for the particular CPU; this will break compatibility with older CPUs (for
# example, -march=athlon-xp code will not run on a regular Athlon, and
# -march=i686 code will not run on a Pentium Classic.
#
# CPU types supported in gcc-3.2 and higher: athlon-xp, athlon-mp,
# athlon-tbird, athlon, k6, k6-2, k6-3, i386, i486, i586 (Pentium), i686
# (PentiumPro), pentium, pentium-mmx, pentiumpro, pentium2 (Celeron),
# pentium3, and pentium4.
#
# Note that Gentoo Linux 1.4 and higher include at least gcc-3.2.
#
# CPU types supported in gcc-2.95*: k6, i386, i486, i586 (Pentium), i686
# (Pentium Pro), pentium, pentiumpro Gentoo Linux 1.2 and below use gcc-2.95*
#
# CRITICAL WARNINGS: ****************************************************** #
# K6 markings are deceptive. Avoid setting -march for them. See Bug #24379. #
# Pentium-M CPU's should not enable sse2 until at least gcc-3.4. Bug 50616. #
# ************************************************************************* #
#
# Decent examples:
#
#CFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe"
CFLAGS="-march=pentium-m -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

# If you set a CFLAGS above, then this line will set your default C++ flags to
# the same settings.
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

# Advanced Masking
# ================
#
# Gentoo is using a new masking system to allow for easier stability testing
# on packages. KEYWORDS are used in ebuilds to mask and unmask packages based
# on the platform they are set for. A special form has been added that
# indicates packages and revisions that are expected to work, but have not yet
# been approved for the stable set. '~arch' is a superset of 'arch' which
# includes the unstable, in testing, packages. Users of the 'x86' architecture
# would add '~x86' to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS to enable unstable/testing packages.
# '~ppc', '~sparc' are the unstable KEYWORDS for their respective platforms.
#
# Please note that this is not for development, alpha, beta, nor cvs release
# packages. "Broken" packages will not be added to testing and should not be
# requested to be added. Alternative routes are available to developers
# for experimental packages, and it is at their discretion to use them.
#
# DO NOT PUT ANYTHING BUT YOUR SPECIFIC ~ARCHITECTURE IN THE LIST.
# IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF YOUR ARCH, OR THE IMPLICATIONS, DO NOT MODIFY THIS.
#
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86"

# Portage Directories
# ===================
#
# Each of these settings controls an aspect of portage's storage and file
# system usage. If you change any of these, be sure it is available when
# you try to use portage. *** DO NOT INCLUDE A TRAILING "/" ***
#
# PORTAGE_TMPDIR is the location portage will use for compilations and
# temporary storage of data. This can get VERY large depending upon
#     the application being installed.
PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/opt/var/tmp
#
# PORTDIR is the location of the portage tree. This is the repository
# for all profile information as well as all ebuilds. If you change
# this, you must update your /etc/make.profile symlink accordingly.
PORTDIR=/usr/portage
#
# DISTDIR is where all of the source code tarballs will be placed for
# emerges. The source code is maintained here unless you delete
# it. The entire repository of tarballs for gentoo is 9G. This is
# considerably more than any user will ever download. 2-3G is
#     a large DISTDIR.
DISTDIR=${PORTDIR}/distfiles
#
# PKGDIR is the location of binary packages that you can have created
# with '--buildpkg' or '-b' while emerging a package. This can get
# upto several hundred megs, or even a few gigs.
#PKGDIR=${PORTDIR}/packages
#
# PORT_LOGDIR is the location where portage will store all the logs it
# creates from each individual merge. They are stored as NNNN-$PF.log
# in the directory specified. This is disabled until you enable it by
# providing a directory. Permissions will be modified as needed IF the
# directory exists, otherwise logging will be disabled. NNNN is the
# increment at the time the log is created. Logs are thus sequential.
#PORT_LOGDIR=/var/log/portage
#
# PORTDIR_OVERLAY is a directory where local ebuilds may be stored without
# concern that they will be deleted by rsync updates. Default is not
#     defined.
PORTDIR_OVERLAY=/usr/local/portage

# Portage uses GENTOO_MIRRORS to specify mirrors to use for source retrieval.
# The list is a space separated list which is read left to right. If you use
# another mirror we highly recommend leaving the default mirror at the end of
# the list so that portage will fall back to it if the files cannot be found
# on your specified mirror. We _HIGHLY_ recommend that you change this setting
# to a nearby mirror by merging and using the 'mirrorselect' tool.
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.gg3.net http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"

# Portage uses PORTAGE_BINHOST to specify mirrors for prebuilt-binary packages.
# The list is a single entry specifying the full address of the directory
# serving the tbz2's for your system. Running emerge with either '--getbinpkg'
# or '--getbinpkgonly' will cause portage to retrieve the metadata from all

# Synchronizing Portage
# =====================
#
# Each of these settings affects how Gentoo synchronizes your Portage tree.
# Synchronization is handled by rsync and these settings allow some control
# over how it is done.
#
#
# SYNC is the server used by rsync to retrieve a localized rsync mirror
# rotation. This allows you to select servers that are geographically
# close to you, yet still distribute the load over a number of servers.
# Please do not single out specific rsync mirrors. Doing so places undue
# stress on particular mirrors. Instead you may use one of the following
#     continent specific rotations:
#
#   Default:       "rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   North America: "rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   South America: "rsync://rsync.samerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Europe:        "rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Asia:          "rsync://rsync.asia.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Australia:     "rsync://rsync.au.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#
# PORTAGE_RSYNC_RETRIES sets the number of times portage will attempt to retrieve
# a current portage tree before it exits with an error. This allows
# for a more successful retrieval without user intervention most times.
PORTAGE_RSYNC_RETRIES="3"
#
# PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS can be used to feed additional options to the rsync
# command used by `emerge --sync`. This will not change the default options
# which are set by PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS (don't change those unless you know
#     exactly what you're doing).
#PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS=""
#
# Advanced Features
# =================
#
# EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS allows emerge to act as if certain options are
# specified on every run. Useful options include --ask, --verbose,
# --usepkg and many others. Options that are not useful, such as --help,
#     are not filtered.
#EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS=""
#
# MAKEOPTS provides extra options that may be passed to 'make' when a
# program is compiled. Presently the only use is for specifying
# the number of parallel makes (-j) to perform. The suggested number
# for parallel makes is CPUs+1.
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
#
# PORTAGE_NICENESS provides a default increment to emerge's niceness level.
# Note: This is an increment. Running emerge in a niced environment will
# reduce it further. Default is unset.
PORTAGE_NICENESS=10
#
# AUTOCLEAN enables portage to automatically clean out older or overlapping
# packages from the system after every successful merge. This is the
# same as running 'emerge -c' after every merge. Set with: "yes" or "no".
# This does not affect the unpacked source. See 'noclean' below.
#
# Warning: AUTOCLEAN="no" can cause serious problems due to overlapping
# packages. Do not use it unless absolutely necessary!
AUTOCLEAN="yes"
#
# PORTAGE_TMPFS is a location where portage may create temporary files.
# If specified, portage will use this directory whenever possible
# for all rapid operations such as lockfiles and transient data.
# It is _highly_ recommended that this be a tmpfs or ramdisk. Do not
# set this to anything that does not give a significant performance
# enhancement and proper FS compliance for locks and read/write.
# /dev/shm is a glibc mandated tmpfs, and should be a reasonable
# setting for all linux kernel+glibc based systems.
PORTAGE_TMPFS="/dev/shm"
#
# FEATURES are settings that affect the functionality of portage. Most of
# these settings are for developer use, but some are available to non-
#     developers as well.

# when commiting work to cvs with repoman(1), assume that all
# existing SRC_URI digests are correct. This feature also
# affects digest generation via ebuild(1) and emerge(1) (emerge
# generates digests only when the 'digest' feature is enabled).
# 'autoaddcvs' causes portage to automatically try to add files to cvs
# that will have to be added later. Done at generation times
# and only has an effect when 'cvs' is also set.
# 'buildpkg' causes binary packages to be created of all packages that
#                are being merged.
# 'ccache' enables ccache support via CC.
# 'confcache' enable confcache support; speeds up autotool based configure
#                calls
#  'collision-protect'
# prevents packages from overwriting files that are owned by
# another package or by no package at all.
# 'cvs' causes portage to enable all cvs features (commits, adds),
# and to apply all USE flags in SRC_URI for digests -- for
#                developers only.
# 'digest' autogenerate digests for packages when running the emerge(1)
# command. If the 'assume-digests' feature is also enabled then
# existing SRC_URI digests will be reused whenever they are
#                available.
# 'distcc' enables distcc support via CC.
# 'distlocks' enables distfiles locking using fcntl or hardlinks. This
# is enabled by default. Tools exist to help clean the locks
#                after crashes: /usr/lib/portage/bin/clean_locks.
# 'fixpackages' allows portage to fix binary packages that are stored in
# PKGDIR. This can consume a lot of time. 'fixpackages' is
# also a script that can be run at any given time to force
#                the same actions.
# 'gpg' enables basic verification of Manifest files using gpg.
# This features is UNDER DEVELOPMENT and reacts to features
# of strict and severe. Heavy use of gpg sigs is coming.
# 'keeptemp' prevents the clean phase from deleting the temp files ($T)
#                from a merge.
# 'keepwork' prevents the clean phase from deleting the WORKDIR.
# 'test' causes ebuilds to perform testing phases if they are capable
# of it. Some packages support this automaticaly via makefiles.
#  'metadata-transfer'
#                automatically perform a metadata transfer when `emerge --sync`
#                is run.
#  'noauto'      causes ebuild
