Mr. Christopher from Corner Stork baby Blog with another crazy list that you all love to get from me

Mr. Christopher from Corner Stork baby Blog with another crazy list that you all love to get from me. As crazy as it is to pay someone to take their baby's photos in the first place, look at how much money was dished out for these celebrity babies;

To start let me make mention of two stars that had babies that did NOT make it into the top 10 even though they are bigger stars than many of these folks below are which is really shocking to me.

12. Sean Preston born to Britney Spears and Kevin Federline is a true shocker that they only got $500K for the babies photos, but once you see the other paychecks in the top 10, you'll be very surprised. Photo.

11. Kingston born to Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani brought in a paltry $575K. Photo.

And now for the top 10.

10.
Baby's Name: Maddie Briann Aldridge
Born: June 19, 2008 in Mississippi
Parents: Jamie Lynn Spears and Casey Aldridge
Amount: $1 million from OK! Magazine
Details: Little sister to pop wreck Britney Spears, Jamie Lynn Spears is a star in her own right since she is Zoey in the Disney hit Zoey 101. Surprisingly Disney has stood by their little star amidst all the drama in the Spears lineage and her outbursts to gawkers in airports. They even altered the storylines to the last episodes and sent her off to another country while she had her child. Regardless, Jamie and Casey sold out to OK! Magazine for a reported $1 million dollars (cue the pinky to the corner of your mouth). But it's still twice as much as her older sister made for her baby.

9.
Baby's Name: Harlow Winter Kate Madden
Parents: Nicole Richie and Joel Madden
Amount: $1 million from People Magazine
Details: Nicole traded in her "do me" pumps and short skirts to grow up and have a baby with her boyfriend Joel Madden (from Good Charlotte). With her only claim to fame being a party girl, Paris Hilton sidekick and daughter of Top 40 daddy Lionel, she decided that the timing was right to procreate. Lionel paid cash to give the couple a home to call their own as a gift for the baby and People magazine gave them $1 million to take a photo of their offspring. Those 2 baby gifts alone are a pretty good jump start to a baby's life. Well, anyone's life actually.

8.
Baby's Name: Honor Marie Warren
Parents: Jessica Alba & Cash Warren
Amount: $1.5 million from OK! Magazine
Details: Jessica Alba had been toiling over the thought of selling her baby photos, but according to TMZ eventually gave in to OK! magazines $1.5 million dollar offer made to her and husband Cash Warren. Honor's photos will be her first available anywhere and also includes one other event which could be a birthday, Christmas or any other holiday that the couple chooses in the child's first year.

7.
Baby's Name: Max Liron Bratman
Parents: Christina Aguilera & Jordan Bratman
Amount: $1.5 million from People Magazine
Details: Christina did her best to keep her pregnancy a secret like Jennifer Lopez did, but was outed by Paris Hilton at a Los Angeles party where she announced it from the stage. Christina immediately hid her face in embarrassment because that was not the plan. But when has Paris ever stuck to a plan? So the pop star and her beautiful newborn baby appeared on the cover in February of 2008 issue along with a deeper view into the pop princess's life.

6.
Baby's Name: Dannielynn Smith
Parents: Anna Nicole Smith & Larry Birkhead
Amount: $2 million from OK! Magazine
Details: Many are still mourning the passing of Anna Nicole Smith, but she left behind one heck of a mess and a custody battle that would be the headline story on both TV and print for months and months to come. When the dust finally settled, Larry Birkhead via a paternity test was finally proven as the father. So he did what any good father would do and cashed in on a $2 million dollar offer from OK! magazine for photos of him and his daughter. Considering that $2 million is chickenfeed for OK!. Compared to the quantity of magazines they sold as a result, they were more than happy to pay for Dannielynn's college.

5.
Baby's Name: Pax Thien (post-adoption)
Parents: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Amount: $2 million from People Magazine
Details: Consider that this won't be the first time you see their name on the list as you read on, but this was the first time they came to the realization that their offspring, even adopted, could bring massive amounts of cash. All of which (here and moving forward) that they would donate to African children's charities. Pax was adopted by couple Brad and Angie from Vietnam in 2007. They also sold rights to publish the photos to the British magazine Hello! which is the only reason why they took the #5 slot from Dannielynne.

4.
Baby's Name: Levi Alves McConaughey
Parents: Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves
Amount: $3 million from OK! Magazine
Details: Matthew McConaughey may look a little lite headed, but he saw the dollar signs right out of the gate and hired Todd Shemarya to broker the deal. Todd's previous work had included Brad and Angie's $4 million dollar deal. The baby's photo will be released for all to see very soon, but since the baby was just born on July 7th, the happy parents are probably holding back for a little bit. But considering the parents genes, there isn't any possibility of an ugly baby. This offer also includes OK!'s option to take a photo of a future special occasion such as a birthday or other holiday event.

3.
Baby's Name: Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt
Parents: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Amount: $4.1 million from People Magazine
Details: This was the first baby photos for Brad and Angie showcasing their first official offspring that was biologically theirs. Shiloh was their very first as a couple and many in the industry were surprised that the pockets weren't a little deeper, but just like in the past (and future), all of the proceeds went to charity. Realistically they should be in slot #2 because they also received $3.5 million from the British tabloid called Hello!

2.
Baby's Names: Max & Emme Anthony
Parents: Jennifer Lopez & Marc Antony
Amount: $6 million from People Magazine
Details: I don't think it's any surprise that we should expect an album from the offspring to be on the Top 40 charts somewhere between 15-20 years from now. And a dozen labels waving money in their faces as they step off the karaoke stage. Inheriting pipes from both mommy and daddy, there should be a lot of singing in these kids future. The twins from Jennifer Lopez and Marc Antony held the number one most expensive celebrity baby photo slot until Brad and Angie's stepped onto the scene...

1.
Baby's Names: Knox Leon & Vivienne Marcheline
Parents: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Amount: $11 million from OK! Magazine
Details: Even though the AP reports that this number is $11 million, some reports have it somewhere between $15-20. Admirably enough, the money will go to a charity in Africa and not into their pockets like they have done in the past. Like they need money. But instead of adding more zeros to their bank account, they decided to use it to help those less fortunate. The issue displaying the baby photos (as of this writing) hasn't been released yet, but we're definitely interested to see what an $11 million dollar photo shoot looks like. Just make sure you have a nice baby memory book from Corner Stork Baby Gifts to place these photos into.

I liked interviewing Page. For all the sort of jockular dick swinging his band seems to inspire, the man can play some amazing guitar. He's also well spoken and articulate, a trait that doesn't normally extend to many of his contemporaries. I OD'd on Helmet when they got back together. Slowly realizing that Meantime was sort of their best and that all subsequent (Betty excluded) had that same militaristic marching chug chug thing going on. Not to discredit his contributions to popular hardcore, I think he's a great writer and musician--fuck it, maybe I'm just old. That and I saw them like five times in a row at SXSW in 06 and a dozen times on Warped when they reformed and put out that record on Lyman's label. He is really nice and I did get drunk near him and James from Against Me! during an after party during Warped Tour one year. There is my famous person story.

The famous person stories are all the same by the way, it involves drinking heavily and turning around, shaking some dudes hand and thanking them for making music. I've been known to nod during conversations that I'm not involved in also. Yes. I'm announcing my uncoolness on my blog, not sure if that makes me uncool-er or maybe I've just never been. Nah, I'm definitely not cool.

Enjoy!

Like all decades, the '90s has its importance in the annals of rock history. Aside from the botched corporate-sponsored Woodstock (AKA 'mud fest'), death of Kurt Cobain and birth of the boy band phenomenon (to name some quick ones), the '90s had some shining musical moments-and most of them took place somewhere on the fringe of the mainstream. The post-hard-core movement began in New York City with bands like Quicksand, Orange 9mm, Into Another and, at the helm-at least the visible one-was Helmet.

Helmet released their Amphetamine Reptile debut Strap It On in 1991 and inspired a million bedroom guitarists with their Interscope follow-up, Meantime. Meantime was the band's first commercial success and garnered them plenty of critical praise and a wider fan base. The marriage of hard-driving guitars, drop tuned with vocalist/guitarist Page Hamilton's deadpan delivery and smart lyrics, made Helmet stand out from the rest of the dying hair bands and solidified the band's place in history as a trendsetter. So much so, in fact, that this past year Page decided it was time to reevaluate Helmet and bring it back for the next generation of heavy music lovers.

Helmet officially disbanded in 1998. After four full-length albums and thousands of miles covered in touring, it was time to move on. Page went on to become a session musician, working with film composer Elliot Goldenthal doing scores for films like Julie Taymore's screen adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus, Neil Jordan's The Good Thief and In Dreams (Annette Bening) and, most recently, S.W.A.T. Page also toured with David Bowie as a guitarist for Bowie's album, Hours. During this time, Page was playing with a band of friends under the name of Gandhi, but due to the stress of having a band made up of bicoastal members, Gandhi broke up in 2002.

Page met drummer John Tempesta in 2002, and started jamming with him and guitarist Chris Traynor (Orange 9MM) who toured with Helmet during the Aftertaste tour. The three of them demoed the track, "Throwing Punches," which eventually made it into the hands of Nine Inch Nails bassist Danny Lohner, music supervisor for the film Underworld. The track made it onto the soundtrack of the film, and the fire for Helmet was sparked again. Jimmy Iovine, chairman for Interscope, contacted Page earlier this year to ask him to produce music for his label and also asked him to return to Interscope with Helmet. Page started by producing Bush front man Gavin Rossdale's solo project and then made the comeback album of the year with Helmet called Size Matters.

Themusicedge.com recently caught up with Page after a wild night in Vegas playing a date on the SnoCore Tour with Chevelle, Future Leaders of America and Strata. His tour mates owe a debt of gratitude to Page and the sound Helmet helped grow and cultivate.

Page got his start playing music by actively listening to music and says of his early experience, "I went to a school where they didn't have much that would get you interested at 15 or 16. They've got you listening to classical, and all you want to play is Led Zeppelin. They have you singing, "Nothing could be finer than bein' in Carolina," and wearing a blue bowtie,. You're thinking, 'music sucks!' Then you hear Zeppelin and you think, ‘music rules!'"

Yet, regardless of taste, Page comes from a strong background where he got his chops going to Manhattan School of Music for jazz guitar. With the current state of things as they are, Page says, "Of all the things they could cut (from budgets), they cut something like music. They don't even realize the value of it, even if a kid doesn't want to be a professional musician, they don't realize that the value of studying an instrument stays with you the rest of your life. "

Page started obsessing about the guitar when he was about 15. He was introduced to the guitar wizardry of Jimmy Page and his stellar work with Led Zeppelin, and by 16, Page had almost every Zeppelin album except In Through the Out Door. By 17, Page had bought his first guitar, a $40 acoustic, and his goal, like many new guitarists of the time was to learn "Stairway to Heaven."

"I started fantasizing about being Jimmy Page. I would listen to two Zep records a day from beginning to end. I bought a $40 acoustic and started taking lessons from this guy. He was a good guy, but he said "Stairway to Heaven" would be too difficult for me to learn, so I left and found a teacher who would help me learn it. I believed I could learn to play anything if I wanted.

"I went to college as a pre-med major 'cause I was in advanced math and science in high school, and they basically said I'd be a doctor or lawyer, but soon realized that seeing the sight of someone injured and the sight of blood makes me pass out so I wouldn't be a very good doctor. I was still really into music, and in the spring semester I got a music teacher and started studying and playing a lot and decided to continue after one semester. I asked my teacher if he thought I could be a career musician and he said I could if I wanted it bad enough. So I started working really hard-12 hours a day. I did a year at the community college 'cause I wasn't quite good enough to get into the university yet. I took a ton of music classes and some philosophy and English lit and kind of got myself together. Then I auditioned for jazz guitar and classical guitar and got in.

"I got my degree and moved to Seattle and auditioned at the Cornish Institute, but they said, ‘You already have your degree but we'd love to have you here. We could give you another bachelor's degree.' But I decided to go to New York instead and give it a go and went to grad school, auditioned for jazz guitar and got my master's degree two years later. I was obsessed. I literally didn't go out, and for me it was a wise thing to move to New York without any money 'cause you can literally get swallowed up by the city. I lived in a welfare hotel and worked the graveyard shift from midnight to 8 in the morning. I had a little Fender amp and a Charlie Parker Omni book, and unless something was going wrong, I just had to buzz people in. I worked my way through grad school doing that.

"When I was done, I picked up a copy of the Village Voice and started looking for bands that were auditioning people and that's how I met the Band of Susan's. I got into that band and then got into Glen Franken's guitar orchestra and did that for about a year when I said, ‘Hey, I can write, I can sing,' and started working on Helmet stuff from there and put my band together."

As an album, Size Matters is a great way for Page to be reintroduced into the wild, so-to-speak, and the guitar work on the album is earthquake-inducing heavy, yet the mild, melodic delivery and un-obligatory throaty yells from Page keep the spirit of Helmet alive without repeating old techniques. His work in jazz (he's also taught himself to play trumpet), film and as a session musician have helped expand his musical vocabulary and in turn expanded his creativity when it comes to writing for Helmet. Page paints the picture of the consummate musician, continuously learning and honing his craft, and taking bits of the jazz and classical world and sprinkling them into the sound of Helmet.

When working with film, Page says, "I was just hired as a guitar player to play on the orchestral score by Elliot Goldenthal, who had heard about me through Warner Brothers. He needed some weird guitar stuff, and they called and said, ‘We're going to hire you to get some other guitar stuff and do this orchestra thing,' and I thought it was cool. They ended up hiring me and this guy Mark Stewart, who is this amazing guitar virtuoso from New York who played with Paul Simon and can do all the really slick reading and everything like that. I can read but it's not something you really do in rock. I'll read a big, slow passage and do it with my sound and build pads under the orchestra, and then work with the composer-mostly just color stuff. So I'll do anywhere from six to 20 guitars on a queue and let them do what they want with it. It's really fun.

"This last year with Elliot, I worked on this opera he's doing called Transposed Heads and worked on S.W.A.T., and those guys recommended me to this other group of guys who did the sound for the movie HEAT, and so I ended up helping them with Catwoman. And worked with Elliot on Collateral.

He adds, "I've been really lucky to be able to do a film a year."

One key aspect for Page as a growing and learning musician was the purchase of a recording device. He says, with regards to self-improvement, "One major key for me was getting a four-track and a drum machine. You spend time listening, putting structures together. It helps when coming up with ideas. You can have two guitars, three guitars-anything goes. You're in your room working and having that expands your knowledge. Hear different things and become a better musician. For me, working on movies helps me in my writing for my band, playing in my band helps my jazz playing. It has provided a springboard for me to help develop these sonic soundscapes, and I'm a good arranger because of the time I spent with the four-track writing and arranging, which helped me on the Gavin Rossdale solo project. I produced this band Toti Moshi from Oakland who we took on the road with Helmet. All these things are part of being a musician. It's not just a one-dimensional world, and I would encourage people to not just listen to rock exclusively."

Helmet hit the road for the SnoCore tour in mid-January and will be traveling with the tour until March 13, where the final stop in is in a very ‘un' snow-like place: Orlando, FL. Former Anthrax bassist Frank Bello stepped in on bass for Chris Traynor so Traynor could focus on guitar, and with former White Zombie/Testament drummer John Tempesta manning the skins, Helmet is once again a force to be feared.

Review coming soon.

There are specific reasons as to why a singer has managed to carry on his trade successfully through four decades. Sir Elton John is a born performer of the very highest standard, in my opinion.

This stands out to be one of the best concerts I have ever attended and I've seen some really good ones. (Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Rod Stewart..) and I've seen some stinkers... (Van Morrison...) Just one stinker then!

I'll also want to talk about Wimbledon...I hate tennis and yet I couldn't pull myself away from the match! Why though, was the camera constantly panning over to a very enthusiastic looking Gavin Rossdale and a very bored Gwen Stefani... were they playing too?

Recently, while watching an episode of Weeds on an online site called www.surfthechannel.com, I came

Recently, while watching an episode of Weeds on an online site called www.surfthechannel.com, I came across a song by Page France. The particular song, entitled "Jesus," was positively mesmerizing and so I logged onto youtube to find a video of the song. While there wasn't an official video, a young girl made her own music video for the song that was particularly sweet.

I could go a couple different directions from this point. I could talk about the show Weeds and how amazing it is and how the music they choose for the show is generally stellar and how I really envy the person that has that job. Or I could talk about Page France and the recent influx of Christian artists into the indie rock scene a la Sufjan Stevens. But I'm not. Instead I want to talk about the state of the music video and my first instinct to turn to youtube.

Whenever I want to watch a music video, I simply log on to youtube and find what I want. I believe that's a pretty common instinct. Last night, after my internet roaming ceased, I turned on the TV. VH1's show "Nocturnal State" (basically just music videos) was on. While falling asleep I lay there hoping to come across some Vampire Weekend or...I don't even know what I was hoping for actually...of course, after a video by Usher, Duffy, and Gavin Rossdale, I clicked off the tube and went to sleep unfulfilled. Today I was thinking about the state of the music video. What place do cable stations like MTV, VH1, and CMT have in the world of youtube? Why would I watch "theirtube?" Perhaps this is why these television stations have turned to trashy reality and dating shows instead. If that's the case why do they still cling to outdated programs such as TRL and Nocturnal State? Obviously television is no longer the appropriate medium for the music video.

Perhaps, I thought, MTV and VH1 have great resources for watching music videos online. However, upon further investigation I was once again disappointed. Their sites were poorly designed, extremely hard to navigate, and lacking in diversity of artists. Have they given up? Why can't they come up with a youtube specifically for music videos? Perhaps a program that plays music videos based on other ones you like Pandora. Now that'd be cool.

The bigwigs over at MTV need to take notice of what is happening. Seriously. Music is moving online and they are doing nothing to keep up. As someone who grew up watching MTV in order to watch music videos, it saddens me that the station no longer fills the same niche.

Mirka Vavrinec hangs out with besties Gavin Rossdale and the pregnant Gwen Stefani during her boyfriend's semifinal match against Marat Safin on Friday.

Looking forward: Roger will overcome the mental hurdle that is his losing streak against Rafa Nadal and win his sixth Wimbledon title. This "Roger is over" talk is all bunk.

It’s hard to think of a band that was greater for longer with less payoff than the now-defunct

It's hard to think of a band that was greater for longer with less payoff than the now-defunct Catherine Wheel. From 1992's staggering debut, Ferment, through their much (and unfairly) maligned 2000 coda, Wishville, CW gave us three brilliant records, two good ones, and an outtakes/B-sides compilation (Like Cats and Dogs) that was better than most of the best original studio efforts being released today.

Oh yeah, and a lot of insanely great (and obscenely loud) live shows. I was lucky enough to see them three times (and managed to escape without lasting nerve damage), and rate the 10-minute encore of "Black Metallic" that closed the show on the Wishville tour as one of the most outstanding moments in my nearly 30 years of live show attendance.

At no point along the way did Catherine Wheel score anything remotely like the popular response they deserved (although, to this day, I wonder if they might have been close with 1995's Happy Days, only to get shoved aside by the similar, but inferior Bush CD, Sixteen Stone; would CW have become massive stars if only Gavin Rossdale had been slightly less pretty?) After the disappointing turn with Wishville the writing was clearly on the wall.

Dark, sad, unhappy days, as I periodically checked the band's Web site, only to see that it hadn't been updated...

Eventually, though, front man Rob Dickinson launched a solo career, releasing Fresh Wine for Horses in 2005. And again, the reaction was underwhelming. If you follow the rock and pop music worlds with any sort of critical eye at all, there's nothing new about a great band getting ignored. But even knowing how fickle and fucked the music industry is, it's still hard to fathom how an artist who's this fame-worthy gets stonewalled.

So, try, try again. Now back with Fontana, Catherine Wheel's original label, Dickinson has reworked Fresh Wine, added a track (the soaring "End of the World"), and also recorded a second disc featuring acoustic remakes of six CW tracks ("Black Metallic," "Crank," "Ma Solituda," "Show Me Mary," "The Nude," and "I Want to Touch You"). The result is nothing short of stunning.

I realize that the dominant response to corporate excess these days is the "indie" ethic - music so small and faux-authentic and unambitious it's almost embarrassing to talk about it. In that context (for a good point of reference, say you've been listening to too much Bright Eyes or Great Lakes Myth Society) Dickinson's effort probably seems bombastic beyond reason. But he's a man who has always swung for the fences, and you'll never hear me complaining about an artist aiming too high.

As has been the case more often than not, Dickinson has again hit the ball out of the park. From anthemic moments like "My Name is Love" to quieter, more reflective offerings like "The Night," which tonally echo the back half of CW's last great record, 1997's Adam and Eve, this suite of unrepentantly romantic songs promise the sun, the moon, and the stars. Some of them deliver on the promise while others ... over-deliver.

A lesson for the indie crowd: authenticity isn't about a lack of production skill or the inability to play your instrument, and quietude isn't a substitute for maturity, depth and craftsmanship. Listen and learn.

So today we honor Rob Dickinson with a few clips that will hopefully make you want to explore his music further. We'll begin with the video for "Oceans," the lead single from Fresh Wine for the Horses.

This is a live performance of my favorite song on the disc, "End of the World."

I think this should be my new theme song: "...you just gotta smile / and hang out with intelligent people"

Next time you need an anthem, might I recommend "My Name is Love."

Catherine Wheel fans should appreciate this one.

What the heck - here's the vid for CW's original version.

One more...

We actually went to "The Boat" reading session by the author, Nam Le, whose book was on the "Nine first books that make a lasting impression" on NPR. Due to some technical difficulty related to automobile, we didn't get there in time for the reading, yet made it for the Q&A session. Out of our curiosity and many good reviews here and there, we picked up a copy and had him signed it and that would be my summer reading. Before you run off and purchase a copy, read the first couple of chapters here.

On the same day during lunch time at a Viet restaurant in San Jose I accidently ran into a long lost friend, and if I remember correctly, last time we hung out was 5+ years ago. A little introduction here and there lead us to find out that we were going to the same karaoke/book signing party later on the day at The Mint in San Francisco...>> (fast forward)...By popular demand I signed up to sing one song and before I was able to perform such an adventurous task, I finished 2 glasses of beer to boost my confidence level up by at least 5x. When it was my turn, the bar was really packed with the after gay pride parade goers and at the moment, I realized that what I liked and signed to sing wasn't something that the audience wanted to hear but I did follow through and finished my piece. Smooth jazzy ("I love you for sentimental reasons" by Nat King Cole) and pop/rock just didn't go well together. That was something to make a note for myself if there's a karaoke party next time. Just hope it won't be so soon.

Name:

DUFFY - "ROCKFERRY"

Why we can't stand her?

She is the Recording Industry's sober alternative to Amy Winehouse. You know what?! We PREFER our retro-cool-neo-soul singers to BE strung-out, drug-laden tabloid fodder, OK?

Name:

GAVIN ROSSDALE - "WANDERLUST"

Why we can't stand him?

Because... grunge is over, dude!! Besides... isn't your wife, luscious Gwen Stefani, the poster-girl for everything sunny, dancy and pop? "Hollaback Girl"? So, why the scowl, man?

Name:

COLDPLAY - "VIVA LA VIDA..."

Why we can't stand them?

Because even with Brian Eno producing, Coldplay STILL sounds like the soundtrack for that scene in any romantic movie, where the Guy is running through the airport, trying to catch the Girl who he recently broke up with, before loosing her FOREVER. Seriously though. Try any track. It really works. Yawn...

Name:

MOTLEY CRUE - "SAINTS OF LOS ANGELES"

Why we can't stand them?

Bloated, old, dismal and built for their cyborg marketing overlords. The same can be said about the Crue's latest release.

Name:

TOKIO HOTEL - "SCREAM"

Why we can't stand them?

To lead singer, Bill Kaulitz: Save all your teen, emo-psychodrama for your unhealthy and lustful obsession of becoming the first living, breathing anime action figure and spare the rest of us of this boring, predictable and overdramatic crap, please...

Sorry, we didn't mean to sound so angry. Hold on... uh..., no, no, no... stop crying,... wait...we didn't...no...its just that... aw, shucks...

Name:

SCARLETT JOHANSSON - "ANYWHERE I LAY MY HEAD"

Why we can't stand her?

Although you gotta give the girl points for trying, Johansson's debut album falls way flat; remarkable atmospherics by TV on the Radio's Andrew Sitek's production anchor Johansson's unremarkable croon. We love ya, sweetie, but stick to the acting. You're great at that.

Now its 2007 and all the kids are into Gwen Stefani all over the world, ask any kid who is No Doubt and they wont make the connection. But hey, that's rock n roll innit? And good on Gwen i say, not many rock acts can last more than a few years and she has been performing since '87.

By the by, No Doubt will be recording a new album soon and no doubt the kids will know who they are when that happens. Hmmm, i wonder if Gwen does interviews? (Don't do it!) Wooo oooo weee oooo. Shhhhh

Formed in early 1987 as a ska band inspired by Madness, the lineup of No Doubt initially comprised John Spence, Gwen Stefani and her brother Eric. While playing the party-band circuit around Anaheim, the trio picked up bassist Tony Kanal, born in India but raised in Great Britain and the U.S. Hardened by the suicide of Spence in December 1987, No Doubt nevertheless continued; Gwen became the lone vocalist and the group added guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young.

No Doubt's live act began to attract regional interest, and Interscope Records signed them in 1991. The band's debut a year later, an odd fusion of '80s pop and ska, sank without a trace in the wake of the grunge movement. As a result, Interscope refused to support No Doubt's tour or further recordings. The band responded by recording on their own during 1993-94; the result was the self-released The Beacon Street Collection, much rawer and more punk-inspired than the debut. Eric Stefani left just after its release, later working as an animator for The Simpsons. By late 1994, Interscope allowed recordings to resume, and Tragic Kingdom was released in October 1995. The album served as a document of the breakup of Gwen Stefani and Kanal, whose relationship had lasted seven years. Thanks to constant touring and the appearance of "Just a Girl" and "Spiderwebs" on MTV's Buzz Bin, the album hit the Top Ten in 1996. Stefani, who has made no secret of her pop ambitions, became a centerpiece of attention as an alternative to the crop of tough girls prevalent on the charts.By the end of the year, Tragic Kingdom hit number one on the album charts, almost a year after its first release; the record's third single, the ballad "Don't Speak," was the band's biggest hit to date. No Doubt's much-anticipated follow-up, The Return of Saturn, was released in the spring of 2000 and "Simple Kind of Life" and "Ex-Girlfriend" were both critically successful at the mainstream and college levels. A year later, Stefani also hooked up with rap chanteuse, Eve for the single "Let Me Blow Your Mind" (it went on to earn a Grammy for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" in 2002), however Stefani also joined her band for the release of fifth album. The couple has kept details about its relationship private, avoiding talking to journalists together. They married in 2002, with a wedding in St Paul's Church in Covent Garden, London. A second wedding was held in Los Angeles, California two weeks later. According to Stefani, it was held so that she could wear a custom-designed wedding dress by British-Gibraltarian fashion designer John Galliano. The couple discovered in 2004 that Rossdale had an illegitimate daughter Daisy with model Pearl Lowe when Rossdale took a paternity test. In December 2005, Stefani and Rossdale announced that they were expecting their first child together. The pregnancy was first reported by Us Weekly, and Stefani confirmed the pregnancy by shouting "I want you to sing so loud that the baby hears it" during a concert in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after her press agent stated that it was untrue. On May 26, 2006, their son, Kingston James McGregor Rossdale, was born via caesarean section at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.[66] Kingston weighed 3.4 kilograms (7 pounds, 5 ounces). Stefani plans to have another baby. (Anyone wager the child will be a pop star in 2025? Has to be with that pedigree)

It's the rhythm, stupid. Oh, and in No Doubt's case, a platinum-blond peach of a female singer, Gwen Stefani, who breaks up the asexual baggy-shorts-and-balloon-pants monotony of alt-nation guy rock (311 included). Both Tragic Kingdom and 311 are ear candy with good beats, not just bludgeon-by-numbers guitars, and both bands are remarkably adept at genre juggling. No Doubt have a spry, white-suburban take on ska and Blondieesque pop; 311 have a tight, sinewy sound that for all of its obvious Beasties-cum-Chili Peppers traits has a potent reggae undertow. So why snipe at either group for lack of depth? Because power ballads are irritating swill, and No Doubt's "Don't Speak" is no exception (the high-pitched rippling in Stefani's voice, more effective with fast songs and sunnier hooks, doesn't help). And you have to wonder about the substance beneath the sweat when 311 fire off lines like "I reserve the right to be as trite as I want." Hey, it's a free country. DAVID FRICKE(RS 750/751 - Dec. 26, 1996/Jan. 9, 1997
