This is the first installment of our new weekly series Design on Film, where we look at interior design as portrayed in some of our favorite cinematic adventures

A lot has changed in the past decade, but one thing’s still certain: people love Batman. The 1995 production Batman Forever was hot…when it came out.

A recent look at Bruce Wayne’s (Val Kilmer) Oliver’s People glasses and power ties sent me running back to Christian Bale and The Dark Knight. But not everything is dated; set director Elise ‘Cricket’ Rowland kept Bruce’s office spacious and sleek. Neutral color palettes are the smartest choice for an office, but all the gold shades were a little too glitzy for me. I think the light shades of Bruce’s office and corporate life were meant to contrast with the dark, cavernous bat world. This contrast in interior designs is subtle but important in setting the mood. It’s a little more obvious in the disparity between the ritzy, uptown sections of Gotham and the rundown back alleys: Wayne Enterprises’ ball versus Robin’s joyride and street brawl mishap. All the neon lighting used in the city, especially the glow stick creations that the city-people wore, reinforced the contrast between the uptown corporate and downtown worlds.

In Dark Night they made Gotham look more like normal Chicago, but the design inside Wayne’s inner sanctum had this wonderful minimalist-industrial look that I can’t resist (well done Peter Lando). Batman's underground equipment room, where all the gadgets came to life, was simply an empty, fluorescent swathed garage. Usually, movie “equipment rooms” are plastered with clutter and animated thingamabobs (think Back to the Future or James Bond films) so the use of empty space in Dark Night was surprisingly effective.

Wayne interiors have this wonderful dark and sophisticated edge. To bad the outside view of Gotham looked so boring.

The dealer wants $300 to do an oil change.

Well, not exactly. They want $300 to do the initial 600 mile break-in service, which includes:

Replace engine oil and filter

Drive chain cleaning, lube, and adjustment

Tighten chassis bolts, exhaust pipe bolts

Brake inspection

Engine idle speed inspection

Throttle valve synchronization

Throttle cable play inspection

Steering inspection

Do they honestly believe I'll hand over good money for something a person with a 5th grade reading level could do themselves? Well, I wouldn't. And as soon as I learn to read good, I'm doing this service myself!

The days are speeding by and I'm not spending much home time on the computer. This is a good thing. Being busy is good. Now, if I could just get the body to shut down before 2 a.m., I'd get more zzzz's.

The weekend past was packed with good things:

[caption id="attachment_472" align="alignright" width="225" caption="The leather version; I have the "other" fabric"][/caption]

A great sale at Banana Republic, yay! I got a fabulous trench coat for $60, hemmed for free. Double yay.

Lunch at Pacific Whey in Newport Coast. The cafe is a great place to people and car watch (think: Lamborghinis and Ferraris), and the food is great. I steered clear of their famous pastries.

A clean garage. That's a big success story.

The garage from Hell

This cleanup project was long overdue. The giant space, which can house two large vehicles comfortably, had become a repository for all things unnecessary in the main house. Since I only park one car there, the remaining square footage became a place to jam in the junk I wanted to keep around. So on Sunday I donned some durable cotton, found my dirtiest shoes, put the hair in a pony tail, and dug in.

My neighbor's daughter, Carissa, ventured over to help me out. She even brought dust masks (she's such a smart gal for her whopping 8 years of life) ... She swept, collected trash, and kept the dog preoccupied while I tore through boxes, put up a new shelving unit, organized the tools and reshuffled items for long-term storage.

It took almost nine hours, but by the end of the day, I had an amazingly clean space. Even the floor was minus the usual debris that sneaks in from the great outdoors. The Santa Ana winds had done me no favors, pushing all varieties of lawn debris, dead bugs, feathers, trash, you name it, into every crevice. Luckily, Carissa loved my extended dust mop, so she happily went from corner to corner, dust mask in place, swishing the dirt away.

I loaded the car with random things for Goodwill, where I learned they'll also take electronic waste. That's great news as I have an ancient PC I'd like to delete from the garage. More space!

Shelby and Sable, the "sister" Labs, showed up at 4 p.m. to help me destroy boxes. This helped me get it all jammed into the recycle bin. Here's a video of Sable getting the job done:

Benga is an important name in the development of the dubstep style for his fusion of the already existing South London dubstep sound with the newer East London born grime sound, and was also one of the first dubstep producers when the style was emerging in the early 2000s.

This Saturday was the ninth anniversary of my late wife's death.

The first few years after Miranda died, I marked the occasion by a solitary pilgrimage to the coast where I once sprinkled her ashes. Being her widower was my religion and the anniversary of her death was the high holy day; I prepared for weeks. But I've been getting sloppy. Being a widower is no longer a religion, it's simply the sad state of things. Like being held prisoner by God while wishing you could just be an atheist. Where I used to pack the tent for a star-strewn rendezvous with her memory on the beach, now I just get a haircut, I put on a tie, and then I drink scotch until my guts dissolve and leak out between my eyelids into the powder-blue carpeting where she used to sit in her sweatpants and casually flick through Time and Newsweek like celebrity-gossip rags.

Two years ago, I settled for a stagger down memory lane with a bottle of scotch and a knee-high stack of overstuffed photo albums. Last year, I forewent the scrapbooks and settled for just the bottle of scotch. This year, I forgot altogether.

Until she reminded me.

I've always been a cynic. Miranda, while living, was both practical and tenderhearted. She could make me see the point of something, the utility. The cosmic importance of certain romantic tendencies. How things knit together in a profound and meaningful way. Her down-to-earth kindness was persuasive; I always agreed with her. But she died before she taught me how to see things the same way.

Being the party animal that I am, I decided to spend Saturday afternoon and evening cleaning out the garage. (This was before I remembered I was supposed to be sobbing into a bottle of Johnny Walker until 2 a.m.) For a single person, my garage was surprisingly full of crap. I don't own a car, but if I did, I wouldn't be able to park it in there. Instead, I own(ed): A stationary exercise bike my sister gave me when she upgraded to a treadmill. Boxes of junk mail from five years ago. Mr. Pibb's fishbowl. Three framed inspirational posters featuring words like "Determination" or "Achieve". I had already made three trips to Goodwill and was eating a bowl of canned soup and surveying my progress from top an old steamer trunk when I saw the envelope.

I don't know where it came from. It must have fallen out of something I had moved. It was slightly yellowed and one corner was lacy with the nibbles of mice or silverfish. The front of the envelope was addressed to The Future Mrs. Saxon. The handwriting was unmistakable. It was Miranda's.

It was dated July 19, 1989. It took me a minute to remember why she would have been writing such a macabre letter; our marriage was never rocky enough to consider divorce. Then it came to me. The cancer. She fought valiantly against it, and won. My Miranda, who wore makeup and high heels to her chemo treatments, who never once missed her Friday rounds with Meals-on-Wheels. Who insisted on cooking for me, even when she was too nauseated to eat more than a few crackers. When I tried to get her to rest, she would laugh and say, "Jesus, Norm. It's not like I'm dying!" And she wasn't. But she had secretly prepared for it, just in case. That was Miranda, ever-practical, and thinking positive at the same time. She always insisted I should remarry if anything happened to her. She made me promise.

Hello,

I don't know how much you know about me, but Norman has presumably told you some things. We have a lot of happy memories together. I hope you don't mind if he talks about me sometimes. However, the most important thing you should know about me is that I'M DEAD. This is not meant to be spooky. I never want to be a ghost, haunting your life or Norm's. I've gone wherever it is that I'm supposed to go, and now it's your turn to be Norm's wife.

I could tell you what I've learned about him, what I've learned about myself by being his wife. But those are the kind of lessons people have to find on their own. Besides, you probably don't need my advice. I could tell you other things, like his favorite meal, his favorite place to have coffee, and the three Puccini arias that always make him cry. But that's not my territory anymore. Anyway, my greatest hope is that you and Norm discover new foods, new places to have coffee, and experience new kinds of beauty together. I hope his favorite things change.

I am telling you this because I imagine it would be intimidating to follow in the footsteps of a much-loved dead wife, which is what I am. Don't be afraid to take down my pictures. Get rid of my china. Redecorate the house. Or hell, sell the house and buy a new one together. You have my blessing.

Only one thing will I ask of you. Please, please take good care of my Norm. Well, he's your Norm now, but take care of him anyway. That's silly, I guess. You married him so I'm sure you plan to do just that. Norm was the only man I ever really loved, and there was never a single heartbeat that I stopped. He needs looking after- on his own he just kind of swims in circles, like a one-legged duck. Be patient. He will be kind to you- it's not in his nature to be otherwise. I think you'll find that Norm is a very good husband. He's thoughtful and funny and sensitive, although his sense of humor is often a little dark. Oh, well, you already know all that, I'm sure.

Good luck to both of you. You have my best, fondest, brightest wishes for happy, heart-full life together.

Mrs. Miranda K. Saxon

P.S. One word of advice: the snoring is truly astonishing. I always found those little foam earplugs to be quite indispensable.

I must have read the letter fourteen times. It was beyond coincidental that she died precisely ten years from the day the letter was written. That was when I checked my watch, and noticed the date for the first time that day. July 19, 2008. A chill ran down my spine. "Miranda?" I said out loud, half expecting her ghost to materialize from behind a box and shake its head at me. At everything being the way it is.

I did not get drunk that night.

But I did take off my wedding ring. And, maybe because I felt like she was there, watching me, I did not cry.

I was in my backyard last night, attempting to fill tiki torches with... tiki(?) fluid. My goal was to accomplish this while it was still light outside and without spilling the fluid all over my arms, making myself a human torch.

Unfortunately, it started to rain so I ran toward the garage at the front of the house when all of a sudden--it was very sudden mind you--something jumped out at me. It was like being behind the wheel of a speeding car that you just can't stop...CRASH!

I have never been so surprised by my own stupidity. Or scared, for that matter.

A few weeks ago, I put up a 4-foot galvanized metal dog fence on the side of the house. I just ran into the 4-foot fence and let me tell you, if you have never ran into a metal fence in the dark, you have no idea how freightening it can be. My left arm was covered in blood and a day later, still pains me to think about it. I'll tell you more about why I have a 4-foot dog fence a little bit later. Perhaps when typing doesn't feel so much like ripping a Band-Aid off a hairy arm.

i've always had a love-hate affair with prog rock. it's generally not quite my cup of tea, but i can't explain why i like bands like dungen so much, and yet just can't quite appreciate the mars volta. anyhow, it's with this questionable track record that i picked up crystal antlers' new self-released ep from my mailbox bearing much apprehension, which of course was mixed with much curiosity as well considering the rave reviews it's been receiving all round. i've also got to admit my first spin was a rough one, something to the equivalent of a splitting headache. but there's something excessive about this record that kept me listening more, as neatly summed up in the psychadellically overblown album closer "parting song for the torn sky". i don't think i've come any much closer to being a prog rock convert after listening to this, though i don't mind being a fellow traveler for the time being.

So over the last 9 days I have cleared out my room. That was no easy task (due to lazy-itus). And to

So over the last 9 days I have cleared out my room. That was no easy task (due to lazy-itus). And today I found myself clearing out our garage. Sooo much unused junk that my mum has collected over the past 50 years or so. I couldn't throw it out. So it went in the loft. This is where I found myself wishing we had some sort of staircase to the loft (we live in a bungalow) or maybe just a less flimsy ladder would be good. The ladder that we do have however has often been referred to as a death trap. It wobbles in a scary way. So when climbing up with arms full of junk, dangerous would probably be an appropriate way of describing it. It was when I took up the third broken vacuum cleaner that I thought 'we really need to throw some of this stuff out'.

My mum seems to have a throwing out stuff complex. By this I mean she won't throw anything out. She hoards everything. I was trying to persuade her that she didn't need to keep my baby things, since I had grown out of them now (about 15 years ago) but she seemed to want to keep them in case she had grandchildren. This is understandable - and they will also hold memories and sentimental value. But the only time anyone ever looks at the old junk and thinks 'oh yeah, I remember doing that' is when they are clearing out the space where the junk lives. I know this because I did a lot of that over the last week. The best one was finding artwork from when I was about 8. What I thought was a perfect replica of something at the time really, really wasn't. I think I'm going off topic though. Things like artwork can be kept. Toys however cannot. What grandchild wants to play with some 50 year old toys? They want new toys surely... Besides I think they would be overwhelmed by the number of toys my mum/I have kept.

The solution to this throwing out nightmare I think is to say about everything: 'will I ever use this again? will I ever wear this again?'. Obviously you don't need to say will I ever wear this again about things like cuddly toys, or golf clubs. But you know what I mean.

So to any junk hoarders out there that might just read this, then do as I said above and you might be able to get rid if stuff. Sell it at car boot sales etc. Although I have doubts that anyone would buy any of our stuff! :p
