In the new movie "The Rocker," cute Emma Stone (above) plays a rock bassist for a garage band. Here's what she says about the whole rock n' roll experience to GQ:

“I like to think I lost myself in the music. I’m not quite sure what the look is portraying—but I’m sure it’s up there with the uglier faces of all time.”

"The Rocker" is about a 80s hair band drummer trying to relive his glory years. Pretty relevant nowadays. In other words, a must-see comedy (see trailer below). I'm hoping for some decent 80s glam metal references.

Hoje, estamos em pré-lançamento. O Lançamento será dia 10 de julho. Neste momento não temos os valores. Mas, por experiência de mercado, nesta região se cobra em média de R$ 3.100,00 a R$ 3.400,00 por m² na área privativa. Porque a Abyara apresenta o mesmo valor do 4o. ao último andar. Então, a Abyara dá preferência para quem fêz a pré-reserva. Para quem não comparece, desiste ou deixa para pensar, acaba perdendo a oportunidade de fazer um bom negócio.

O Botânica, foi um sucesso em vendas, 95% vendidos até hoje. E o Reserva Ecoville, não vai ser diferente. Qualidade igual. Projeto igual. A diferença é o local, está em outro bairro. Clara, espaçosa e recheada de produtos da marca da maçã, a loja é um paraíso para quem é fã da Apple. Lá você encontra atendimento personalizado (os atendentes realmente sabem o que estão vendendo), assistência técnica e acessórios, como fones de ouvido, cabos, conectores, caixas de som e o tão milagroso produto de limpeza para o MacBook branco, o iClean, da Monster (por R$ 154,00, parcelado em 2x).

A inauguração contou com cafezinho, bem-casados e algumas ofertas, como por exemplo, quem comprasse um iMac levava também o Office for Mac e o MacBook Air está sendo vendido a R$ 4.999,00. Uma boa idéia foi ter trazido um guitarrista que demonstrava e tirava dúvidas sobre o funcionamento dos softwares Garage Band e Logic Pro. What hasn't been covered so well is that it's also for musicians. Sure, music fans can enter a song they like in our search and get recommendations based on that song. But that's just one half of the relationship. The other half is to have the musicians with music to find.

A major part of our experience is going to be tailored specifically for musicians. We're trying to create the easiest interface possible for an musician or band to upload their music into our database and enable it for discovery.

Sure, there are many sites like Garage Band and MySpace that help give artists a home for their music and an electronic press kit to share with clubs at which they want to play. But those places are not necessarily geared for discovery.

By uploading their music into our database, a musician or band is improving their chances of being tied specifically to a song that one of our users already likes. That means that when they hear that artists song, the user will be in a discover and purchase frame of mind.

If the user really enjoys that artists song, they then become an evangelist for that musician or band. It is our goal to not just be a static home for musicians and bands, but to be a place that proactively pushes their music out to people who we know will like it.

For example, check out this up and coming band - PJ and the Jelly Roll Chaser*.

They sound very much like the "Drums" or "Space Jam" portion of any Grateful Dead show. So, if one were to type a song from the Grateful Dead album "Infrared Roses" - which is a collection of instrumental jams from their live shows - into our search engine, PJ and the Jelly Roll Chaser may have one of their songs served up as a result.

A band will only show up in our search results as often as a user looks for a similar song, but when their songs do turn up, there's a much greater chance that the user will listen to, purchase and like the song. At this point, a band needs to have quality fans before they can build quantity.

*Ok, PJ and the Jelly Roll Chaser may still need to evolve their work a bit, but you get the point...

I'll start with some music-centered social networking site picks for this week, and then continue on with others in a future post. Here is my own compilation of the best, weirdest, or at least most unique sites..

LAST FM

This site refers to itself as the "social music revolution". LastFM is one of those smart sites that reads the contents of your personal music catalog (upon registration) and makes recommendations as to other music you might like. It offers up a personal profile, radio players, artist pages, concert updates, music videos, free song downloads (thought you might want to go straight to that one), and more. Bands can create their own pages as well and anybody can upload music.

Here's how they put it: Last.fm taps the wisdom of the crowds, leveraging each user's musical profile to make personalised recommendations, connect users who share similar tastes, provide custom radio streams, and much more..we are a London-based company with a music-obsessed team of developers and creative professionals from around the world.

So there you go.

MYSPACE:

I know that everyone and their grandmother knows about the MySpace empire, but I can't really write this without including them. Although it is not just a music site Myspace is used by just about every band in existence. It is an easy access tool to the latest updates, tour stops, blogs, music, downloads, photos, etc from bands and is totally free for any band to use.

Organized and easy use, you don't have to be web savvy at all to have a really cool personal or band site, or to find out more about your friends new favorite band. I am often surprised at how many bands also offer free downloads from their sites. Probably more used as a social networking tool by bands than any other site in existence, it is definitely the most direct way to hear from and hear literally what bands are up to.

ALL AT ONCE:

This site is different than the others in two main ways: 1.) It is based entirely on the music of Jack Johnson, and 2.) The primary focus is purportedly to be a new social action network where you can discuss issues and events, explore non-profit groups, and take action to make positive change in your local and world community.

I am unsure if there exist other "social action network" sites that center around music but it is an obvious collaboration. If you sign up you are the lucky recipient of a free download, access to the community discussion forums, upload videos of your own community projects, and can give money to select organizations. Mostly however this site appears to be an online Jack Johnson alter. Anybody have experiences here or know of other music & social action sites?

MOG:

Another smart music site (and one of my faves) is MOG. This site also reads your music files and makes personalized recommendations. MOG is essentially a blogging site for serious music fans. The personal pages offer many options and it is likely you will find complete strangers offering up earnest and intelligent comments in response to your posts. There are also artist pages where anyone can add info about specific bands and musicians. The user generated writing is high content and high quality- many "Moggers" are clearly in the music industry.

From the horses mouth: Imagine if Rolling Stone or MTV had thousands of writers and producers contributing news, reviews, songs, and videos that were filtered based on what you were listening to, so you could always find the good stuff. That’s exactly what MOG is doing..One of the first online communities built exclusively for music lovers, MOG was founded in June 2005 by CEO David Hyman. MOG has been funded to date by Angel investors and is headquartered in Berkeley, CA.

ILIKE:

Ilike is probably most well known by it's Facebook application. This smart player (through the website) also reads your music collection, and gives you personalized recommendations. It is very friend centered; you receive more recommendations with additional friends, it displays what your friends are listening to, and it will give you a detailed breakdown of how your tastes are similar or different than theirs. Additionally you can program it to give you recommendations through your ITunes account as well as other channels. Artists may also create their own profiles.

The same company runs the "artist community" Garage Band and a "broadcaster community" called G Cast. They say: We invite every music lover to participate in a more democratic music industry. By rating, recommending, or simply by listening to music, you'll impact what gets recommended to others.

JAM NOW:

Unlike the others, this social network is aimed at primarily at musicians. Both musicians and music fans can create their own profiles which include basic descriptions. The very unique feature here however is that musicians can broadcast live over the internet, even jamming with other musicians anywhere in the world through the site. Meanwhile, fans as well as musicians and site members can listen in.

Self description: Unlike sites that allow users to “post and listen” to audio content, our innovative technology platform enables real-time music collaboration and creation, linking musically oriented communities of interest.

Now that's cool.

Before anyone starts throwing rotten tomatoes at me or any other biodegradable food, yes of course there are musicians out there who can play, but the computers make it soooooo much easier, that even I, who cannot sing or play much anymore, have the ability and possibility to make music!

Another thing I heard from a musician and producer recently, was that some bands actually hire "proper" musicians to play when they record their albums, because the actual band members are not good enough musicians. They can get away with their playing on their live performances, but apparently on the album it has to be tight and perfect musically. So the image is more important than actually being able to play the guitar well or sing well. 

Hmm, again can't help but wonder: who is behind the music? A person or a computer, or a person behind the computer in charge of the computer? I'm sure a lot of people go to concerts and see the computers and laptops as an integrated part of the band, they provide loops and some of the arrangements and maybe some of the instruments that cannot be played for practical reasons, not enough band members or not enough money to pay for more band members. In effect, these computers contribute to the full sound that reaches our ears!

Again makes it possible for people with not so much money to make music. But what about the ones who have the money and can afford to hire in all the musicians and still they use the computers?

And what about Milli Vanilli and Boney M, would they had made it big had we known from start they were selling an image and music, but not actually singing themselves?

Ok I better go back to what I should be doing, which is editing, but before I get there I should start with the transcpription of my one hour long conversation interview with one of the Greek modern philosphers around Sokratis..

2) Grab some loops from GarageBand and tweak 'em into a hit.
3) Then give 'em to Ursher.
4) Become the hot producer you were destined to be.

I don't think that it's a stretch to say that the music industry these days thrives on the sampling. But how much is too much? As I see it, it's a moral and ethical question and the answer is subjective to each and every individual to make up his/her own mind. Personally, a bit from a track here and there is fine as long as the newly produced track is distinctively different from the original, if it's not simply go and buy the rights to the sample.

So what trigger this thought, well here it is...Usher's Love In This Club, heavy track and an instant hit (personally I don't mind it, but don't think it's anything special) and produced by Polow Da Don (massive producer whom can be credited with the likes of Ludacris, PCD and Fergie). So anyways, the main distinctive beats of Love In This Club can be found as preset samples on Apple's Garage Band software! Now, that's hitting pretty low on the sampling scale if you ask me.

kinda cheap on Polow's part huh? producer's these days. jeez.

The sad part is that this beat is really hot, and now it's been discredited as genius. I think this may actually stir up some big time controversy in the music world...expecially with the advent of social networking, i'm sure people are scouring through their programs to "expose" other hit soundtracks.

Right click on any audio file (MP3, Wave, etc.) and then select Properties (context menu)>click the General tab>click the Change button.

In the "Open With" (dialog box) under the heading "Recommended Programs," select (from the list) the program you want the audio file to now open up into, e.g. Adobe Audition, CoolEdit Pro, Audacity, GarageBand, etc. Click OK twice to close out and return to the Desktop.

About the song

You may have heard of the Awkward Turtle. I was introduced to it by Adrienne, with whom I perform on the improv team Three Legged Race. You make it by putting one hand on top of the other, palms down, and then waggle both of your thumbs, like a turtle.

Why would you do so? Well, when somebody says something awkward, there's usually that uncomfortable pause afterward. And you can't move on until you've resolved it. So instead of letting that pause draw out for minutes, hours, days, etc., simply toss up the Awkward Turtle. Everyone can have a good laugh and get on with their life.

I know from experience. I get the Awkward Turtle a lot.

Anyhow, fast forward to a few weeks ago. Doug, another member (and co-director) of Three Legged Race, was hosting a small Super Bowl Party, consisting mostly of 3LR members. As you may remembe, the game and the commercials were mostly pretty dull, so we were more talking than watching. Somehow, probably because I said something that demanded it, the Awkward Turtle got tossed up.

It was deemed inadequate.

So much so, that we began creating friends for the Awkward Turtle, including Obvious Ostrich, and Pukey Parrot.

The conversation turned to other topics, but eventually, someone (probably me again) said something out of sorts that normally would draw the Awkward Turtle.

Instead, and with amazing reflexes (he'd been waiting for the moment), Doug threw his hands to the side of his head like antlers, and shouted "Creepy Moose!"

By consensus, Creepy Moose was the best of the new friends of Awkward Turtle that we developed that night.

This song, then, is hopefully Creepy Moose's introduction to the wider world. Awkward Turtle makes an appearance as well, although his fans may not be too pleased with it. You'll have to listen to find out why, though.

As it shares a significant word with the title of this blog, you may assume that this is the song that's tangentially related to the title, and you'd be right. As I said, I have a certain propensity toward receiving the Awkward Turtle or his new friends. But I also do nice things like think about other people's feelings and stuff. Adrienne says I'm the sweet one of the group. She also says I'm the creepy one. Sweet but creepy.

Technical info

This one was built in Garage Band, but only the rhythm track is premade. I recorded the piano and the bass tracks on my brand-new keyboard (a Yamaha DGX-220, if you care.) Weirdly, though, I couldn't get it to take the keyboard's sounds, so the particular tones are GarageBand's version of a piano and an electric base, rather than the Yamaha's.

Apple is Currently holding a competition in accordance with Fox to see who can write music for our American idols! Apples involvement in this is that the music must be written in garage band, Apples music program, but other than that competition rules are pretty slim. I strongly suggest finding out about Garage Band if you don't currently use it as it is the best audio editing software in the non-professional class currently. Apple is working with American Idol so much that they even remain the vendor to the contestants complete songs. Much of you who are against American Idol, don't take it out on Apple, check out this Anti-Idol site.
