Peak Performance Concept Store Strand Galleria 0920-17071

GANT Store Strand Galleria 0920-18400

Today I had to figure out how to save some content from a site during a running Webtest so that I am able to restore all changed data afterwards. Luckily Webtest provides the step storeXPath() which does the job.

But it was not that easy to realize my task due to the lack of good documentation and finding the correct xpath expression.

The following code snippet grabs the text value of a text input field with the id surname and saves it in the ant property xyz.

def testSomething() {
   webtest('Some description') {

        // saving initial value
        storeXPath(xpath: "id('surname')/@value", property: "xyz")

	// restore initial value
	setInputField(name: "surname", value: "#{xyz}")

    }
}

Pretty simple in the end, but it took a while till I came to this. Maybe it helps someone.

GMaven for Blackberry development on a Mac?

I’ve gone clear outta my mind. I’m thinking let’s build a blackberry native app on

I've gone clear outta my mind. I'm thinking let's build a blackberry native app on the Mac. Sure! Why not? I mean there's only the long-standing platform incompatibilities between J2ME and OS X, the windows-oriented nature of Blackberry tools, the mismatch of typical J2ME project structure and Maven project structure and looming deadlines to worry about. And while I'm at it, throw Groovy into the mix, because everybody knows that Groovy has everything to do with writing embedded apps right?

This week I've bounced between a Gant build, a legacy Ant build, our multi-module maven JEE project, and brand new GMaven plugin projects. Let's just say I'm becoming very familiar with the build process in general. Project structure is important. The build system is critical. It is at the root of every successful and failed project in history. Many problems, and resolutions to problems stem from the build/deployment system in place on a given project. It makes sense that as a developer you pay close attention to what's involved in the building and deployment of your software. Yet soooo many people fail to understand the variables involved in the build tool chain. Many a problem can be tracked to system incompatibilities resulting from version mis-match and/or conflicts. Something as simple as a micro point release difference in your web container or JDK can cause an app to behave wildly different. (Today I tracked a bug down to Tomcat 5.0.28 on a dev box where version 5.5.25 is running in production.) The version numbers of your build tool chain is often the last place developers look when researching a problem. It is the first thing I look for when trying to isolate an issue. I digress.

With all the build tools ranging from Ant to GAnt to Maven to Gradle... (BuildR anybody?) it's easy to get overwhelmed. I had a buddy remind me how important it is to refrain from going overboard in leading edge-multi-faceted-combined technologies. Stick with proven products yet always look for the next thing. That's how I feel about Maven. There are alternatives some have better features. However Maven is mature and ubiquitous. I don't have to pull in yet another runtime to build my project. I don't need to learn yet another platform. It does its job and does it well. So well that I try to use it for all of my Java work, bringing me to my point. J2ME Blackberry development can be done with Maven. It can be done on a Mac. And at the end of my ordeal it should be painless to do on a Mac.

So why Maven? Why not Ant? The app I'm working on includes several JEE complimentary pieces and I'm sorry but I would rather not touch Ant on a web app project. No way, no how. Furthermore with JEE making up over half of the codebase Maven is the perfect solution for managing the project. We currently have it in use and we have a wrappering pom around the Ant build we use for our J2ME client. That wrapper has been a source of utter pain. So I've been looking to figure this out for the longest.

What does Groovy have to do with it? Well I have the Pyx4ME J2ME plugin for Maven working pretty well but there are some obvious holes. First off is a decent deployment mechanism. I need to tie deployment into the modified Antenna OTA servlet we have. Secondly there is no support for Blackberry in the plugin so somebody needs to add it. I started to write a plugin and I just knew I wouldn't want to be bothered writing it in Java. A couple of minutes after I finished bouncing between 20 different reference articles, APIs, and PDFs and I had the beginnings of the RIM plugin for Maven complete with OS X compatibility. It's not totally finished yet. I still have issues running the jar signing tool on the Mac. (It should run fine on Windows, and possibly Linux.) But it runs the compiler. I've generated a .cod file in the target folder of a prototype project. Interesting stuff indeed.

If that's not enough, I've also managed to launch GAnt from within Maven! Why would anybody want to do this? Maven is become widespread like Ant. If you or your team already use Maven but you want to toy with Something else like Gant you would have immediate access. You don't need to open your browser, don't launch Safari, just run Gant:

mvn gant:run

That's it! And that's perfect for my current situation where I'm trying to spread Gant across my team. The same applies for Groovy. Don't go to the codehaus site, just run it!

mvn groovy:console

There's something to be said about the convenience of a one stop shop. That's my thing for now. Stop back because I'm gonna continue to post updates on not only Groovy, but Blackberry, GAnt, Maven, maybe even Gradle if I get that far. Holla!

Why Maven doesn't work for me.

I’ve been meaning to do a follow up post on Maven for quite a while. I received several email

I've been meaning to do a follow up post on Maven for quite a while. I received several emails regarding my previous post from people asking how we're using it. I must admit, it looked promising initially, but as we got into the specifics, it looked less workable for building commercial software. Here I hope to outline some of the reasons I suggest that Maven may not be for you.

It's strengths.

Firstly, by reading blogs, wikis and the Maven website itself, you would get the impression that Maven is well suited to building web applications. It is, as several are already in existence, and those developers seem to like using it. For the most part, these are open source projects, following best practices, typically producing jars, wars or zip build outputs.

This makes Maven suitable for web applications such as a stock trading applications a typical bank would use. Coders code it, Maven builds it, then deploys it to a test environment where QA test it. If it is deemed of acceptable quality, it may be further deployed to a live environment. Maven suits this process well.

This is fine for internal web based applications which an information systems department may maintain, or for web based open source applications. When it comes to commercial software, the needs are a little different. For the majority of projects I've worked on, we eventually need to build and test software, before creating an installer, and bundling it on CD or for download. This leads us to the first issue I have with Maven ...

1. One build output.

Within the Maven project file, you can specify the packaging used for your build output. The default is jar, with war, rar, ear, and a few others also acceptable.

The point here, it that you only get one output file from a Maven project. For open-source, or web application development, this is generally sufficient. In my experience though, this is far from ideal for commercial software.

The software I've been dealing with is mostly Java, with some native bits, and associated data and configuration files. Bundling all this into a single jar, or war is not appropriate for several reasons. Some technical, some legal (with regard to licensing of third party libraries), etc.

The net result, is if you persist in using Maven, you'll need one project file per output file, with the associated overhead of ensuring that those multiple build systems don't diverge over time.

2. Linear build process.

The second issue I have, is that Maven defines a linear build process. Again, this reduces it applicability to general purpose project building.

A good example if how this hurts, is cross platform Java development with native code. Java provides an API for talking to serial ports, though the implementation must be provided separately. It's relatively easy in Ant, to branch your build depending on the platform your building, and include the Linux serial implementation when you build on Linux, and a different Windows serial implementation when building on Windows.

No such luck with Maven. You get a linear build process which you can optionally hook in at various points, but you don't get branching or looping constructs for your build system. You're left to resort to multiple project files again.

3. Configuration Overhead

One of the major selling points of Maven is it's jar management abilities. I admit, if done properly, this would be a killer feature. I await the day it's done well.

This works well, again for open source only projects. For the rest of us, we'll need to create our own Maven repositories, for internal commercial libraries, as well as commercial third party libraries and toolkits.

This adds to the amount of work required from a project team before the first successful build is created. I've already posted about the pain I experienced in installing and configuring an internal Maven repository. Ideally this cost could be borne once, and shared amongst all project teams, but then you're running into legal and licensing issues when you could potentially be sharing libraries across project teams without the necessary per-seat fees. Also, as I've noted before, Maven isn't ideal for all projects, so adopting (or forcing) it to other teams is problematic. In the majority of cases, you'll be left alone to manage your own project infrastructure, adding to your workload.

4. Build failures.

Rather than check in libraries to your project, Maven allows you to specify what libraries you need in your project file. Maven then looks for these jars in your local Maven directory, a maven proxy (if configured) or finally in the central Maven repository. This is a useful feature, as all the dependencies are managed for you with this approach.

The downside, is the need to have a local maven proxy for your own commercial, or third party libraries. Another downside, is the need to be constantly connected to the internet to check the central repository while building. For example, if your project file specifies your project needs the latest version of JUnit, then Maven will check that it has it each time you build. If for some reason your internet connection is down, slow, or the central repository is busy (which is likely as Maven's popularity grows), you get a build failure.

Call me old fashioned, but to me build failures are serious. They generally denote that something has gone wrong. You've forgot to check in a file, or a unit test has failed, etc. You need to fix it.

With intermittent build failures due to network connectivity, a developers faith that a failed build is actually something that needs fixing becomes eroded, and failed builds tend to be ignored for longer, as developers assume it another bogus failure that'll fix itself eventually.

The net result here is either time spent diagnosing bogus failures, or developers getting lazy about build failures.

5. Repeatability.

Related to Maven's library management, is the requirement of repeatability. To me a build should be constantly repeatable. That is, if I check out revision 2345 of a project and build it today, I get the same build outputs as if I build the same revision next week, month, or year.

This is not necessarily the case with Maven's library management. Unless your are fastidious in specifying the version of libraries you need, Maven will download updated libraries behind your back. So building revision 2345 today gets you a build. Building the same revision next week gets you a different output, because the libraries you depend on were updated on the central repository.

If you can't reproduce consistent builds, what's the point in having source control infrastructure? Source Control Management is already difficult enough, without playing fast and loose like this. What happens in 3 years when that big customer requests some changes to the software you sold them?

Call me paranoid, but I'd rather take the hit and manage my own libraries. Sure checking them into Subversion or CVS uses disk space, but disk space is cheap compared to not being able to repeat a build when that big customer comes calling.

6. Internal Processes

How your company builds software also has a baring on this discussion. Our software development process specifies that the Configuration Manager must build all release candidates. This step is introduced so that a person independent from the project team can validate that the software, tools and methods needed to build an application are in place, and that a specific build version could be reproduced in the future if necessary.

We generally meet this requirement by checking in all libraries needed into source control, and writing a build instructions document which outlines what tools and configuration is needed to set up a build environment, as well as how to produce a build from that environment.

As already noted, Maven is unsuited to this metaphor for various reasons:

You are depending on resources outside of your control when depending on libraries from Maven's central repository. Can you guarantee that in X years time, the repository will still be there, with the versions of libraries you need? (No you can't, so repeatability of builds is compromised).

Can you guarantee that your project's maven proxy will be available in X years time? Generally, project resources get redeployed when a project finishes. Your CM manager will have lots of work to do to recreate the Maven proxy when a build is needed.

7. Declarative XML.

The Maven project file describes itself in a declarative XML notation. XML is, as noted in a previous post, a data markup language. It is not a domain specific language written for the purposes of building software. Ant fails this test too.

Ant is somewhat procedural, even if it does use a funny reverse execution mechanism. Generally I've found it relatively easy to debug when the build system fails. Maven on the other hand uses some sort of voodoo-magic. When Maven builds fail, be prepared to spend several days pouring over verbose output logs trying to find out why it didn't execute the hibernate schema generator when you thought it should.

If you're considering using Maven, then I would suggest you're better off researching some of the newer build tools such as Gant, Rake, or Buildr. These have learned from Ant and Maven mistakes, and are built on easy to learn scripting languages.

Conclusion

Using Maven is like ridgewalking. If you can stick to the beaten track, all will be well. Wonder off, even a little, and you'll find yourself falling off some pretty steep cliffs. Maven works, but only for a very specific type of project. If that's you, then by all means knock yourself out. While it serves it's niche well, I personally wouldn't consider it a general purpose build environment.

Ways to invoke Groovy from your Build

There might be several reasons for you wanting to invoke Groovy from your Java build. Either you

There might be several reasons for you wanting to invoke Groovy from your Java build. Either you're fed up with coding XML or you want to take a shortcut around the build systems sometimes cumbersome way to extend basic functionality. Custom Ant tasks and Maven Plugins hardly can overcome the shortcomings of XML expressiveness. Groovy can truly enrich your build through scripting. Java/Groovy hybrid applications also need a way to compile Groovy classes. No problem...support exists.

1. Ant

Compilation

The Groovy-All library comes with the Ant task
groovyc
that lets you compile your Groovy source files. It can be used very similar to the
javac
Ant task.

<taskdef name="groovyc"
         classname="org.codehaus.groovy.ant.Groovyc"
         classpathref="my.classpath"/>

<groovyc srcdir="${src.dir}" destdir="${bin.dir}">

Execution

The library also comes with the Ant task
groovy
that lets you execute your Groovy code. For more information see "Groovy in Action", chapter 13.1.7 which gives a thorough code example. Previously compiled Groovy classes can be executed like regular Java classes using the Ant task
java
. First define the task definition in your build script:

<taskdef name="groovy"
         classname="org.codehaus.groovy.ant.Groovy"
         classpathref="my.classpath"/>

Afterwards you can use all Groovy capabilities in your Ant targets:

<groovy>
   println "Your Groovy code here!"
<groovy/>

2. Maven 2

A very convenient way to configure Maven 2 to compile and execute your Groovy classes or scripts is to use the Groovy Maven Plugin. You have to stick to the Maven conventions to place your Groovy (test) sources in the right folders. Put your Groovy sources in
<project-root>/src/main/groovy
and your test sources to
<project-root>/src/test/groovy
.

First you need to add the Groovy Maven plugin and the Groovy runtime to your POM dependencies. Please check the Maven repository for the last versions:

<dependencies>
   <dependency>
      <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
      <artifactId>groovy-maven-plugin</artifactId>
      <version>1.0-beta-3</version>
   </dependency>
   <dependency>
      <groupId>org.codehaus.groovy</groupId>
      <artifactId>groovy-all</artifactId>
      <version>1.5.4</version>
   </dependency>
</dependencies>

Compilation

To compile your Groovy sources add the Groovy Maven plugin to your POM build definition. To start compilation run
mvn compile
in your shell.

<plugin>
   <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo.groovy</groupId>
   <artifactId>groovy-maven-plugin</artifactId>
   <executions>
      <execution>
         <goals>
            <goal>compile</goal>
         </goals>
      </execution>
   </executions>
</plugin>

Execution

There are several ways to execute your Groovy code:

a) Execute an inline Groovy script
b) Execute a local or remote Groovy script
c) Execute compiled Groovy classes

To execute your compiled Groovy classes you can simply use the Maven Exec plugin. Your Groovy classes are nothing else than regular Java class files. Run
mvn exec:java
in your shell.

3. Gant

Gant is a build tool that sits on top of Ant. You can use all tasks Ant provides. Instead of using XML to code your targets you use Groovy as scripting language. Therefore, the execution of Groovy syntax works right away. You don't need to add additional notation to make this work.

Compilation

For compiling our Groovy classes to Java code we again use the groovyc.

sourceDirectory = 'src/main/groovy'
buildDirectory = 'bin'
Ant.taskdef(name : 'groovyc',
            classname : 'org.codehaus.groovy.ant.Groovyc')

target(compile : 'Compile source to build directory.') {
   groovyc(srcdir : sourceDirectory , destdir : buildDirectory)
}

Execution

I think it's needless to say how to invoke Groovy in Gant. Simply use it!

yesterday was pretty awesome...! because sherbie and i went window shopping!! (well ok, effectively just me window shopping and her doing the actual buying) Sherbie, I wished you weren't so lazy about stretching and start losing some of that weight so that you can fit better into clothes and so that i can give you more compliments now and then instead of the usual comments... >_<

sigh.

anyway, why was yesterday awesome?

This was what i came across on the way to the train station from my place! (: (: (:
(sorry kc, i know it's quite gruesome!)

and then well, here's the dress that i tried on (i tried on a few, and forgot to take pictures of the others!!! only remembered for this one...) we went to Gant's to window shop... they had some really pretty dresses!

I could still lose a few more pounds, definitely. because while my side profile looks a little flattering, my front is nothing to be proud of. I feel like a pancake. haha!!
I was telling sherbie how to look a little thinner (and it's absolutely safe, i assure you, it's just a matter on whether you'd want to do it for a long period or whether you'll give up 2 seconds into it. lol!)...
you do it by having a really good posture - throwing the shoulders back, standing up tall, sucking your stomach in, and finally sticking your butt out. hahaha! that's all there is to it!
But trust me, it's tiring, but super effective! (i'm sure alot of the other girls reading this would be like 'what? you know that only NOW?!?!')
nah.. i've known it a long time ago. only too lazy to share it with anyone till now.

and to really look skinny one has to exercise..... and not by letting the machines do it for you.... T_T
so sherbie, no tummy walker whatever that is, do your stretching, okay? it's necessary if you want a thinner and healthier body rather that get fed up and unhappy about my comments all the time... (i don't enjoy telling you all that all the time either, trust me. makes me feel so bad just telling you what i have to say.)

------

I've finally given in to tri's advice about lesser carbs and they do work quite well.... (she agrees no carbs is impossible, but lesser carbs are definitely something we can work with) That and tonnes of exercise.
I went back down to the supermart (carrefour) to change the size of my roller blades! (:
Will take a picture of them inline-skates later in the morning and post 'em up tonight! or this afternoon...

was trying them out at home just now and was having a whale of a time trying to skate with at least noise i could possibly make all around my home (yes, it's THAT small... or big... for an apartment flat).... I went around the dining table and all over the hall and through the sitting/tv area like 5 times before i gave up (because i only wanted to get a feel of the blades) and took them off... i forgot how stuffy it gets in those friggin' boots!

SO anyway, sunday's lesson! wooooot!
can't wait! (: haha!

Shirts from the GANT Rugger collection.

No brand has reincarnated itself better than the preppy New Haven born GANT. In the past few years they have shaped and polished themselves into a very stylish and smart collection. A few seasons ago, they collaborated with Jeffery Kalinsky on a small offering of shirts that has since become a full collection of suiting, outerwear and of course the GANT mainstay - woven shirts. Launching for AW08, the new GANT Created by Jeffrey collection features detailing that is quirky and cool. They used their signature oxford-cloth to tip the pockets and for piping in the trousers. The line looks just like what Jeffrey himself likes to wear. Classic pieces that will remain stylish for years to come. GANT has done something unique by taking a small collaboration with a selection of shirts and turned it into a commercially successful brand extension aimed at a wider, yet very fashionable market. Well done.

Much has been made of the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship format. The “playoff” format t

Much has been made of the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship format. The "playoff" format that has been use has had mixed results and reviews. Some have called for another revision. In fact, there are several issues that cause concern, among them the fact that someone could potentially miss a few races and still make the Chase, or that those who fans favor missing out. Maybe the Old School Racing Tour has an answer.

The Old School Racing Tour, OSRT, is a series for old time drivers to compete for charities. They will hold 10 regular events, followed by one championship race. It will start in May and conclude the "regular season" in October. The championship race will be held next February, in conjuction with the Daytona 500. Drivers like Harry Gant, David Pearson, Dave Marcus and Geoff Bodine, among others, will compete for the championship, earning money for a specified charity.

The format for the championship will consist of allowing drivers to choose 6 races in which they will compete. Their top five finishes will be used to compile their points. At the end of the season, the top ten will qualify for the winner-take-all championship race. Prior to the championship race, all other drivers will race in a last chance race, in which the top 10 will also qualify for the championship race.

I like this idea. I think it has potential for the Cup series. Now, I don't think limiting the number of races the drivers could race in would every fly. The fans would revolt if their favorites chose not to race their favorite race. But, the idea of taking the top 32 or so finishes has merit. Allowing drivers to throw out four or five of their worst finishes would remove the problem of the non-contenders affecting the outcome of the championship. Also, the idea of a final race with only 20 or so drivers, 10 automatic and 10 who raced their way in from a qualifying race, is very intriguing.

I think most of all, this format shows that there are other potential formats that could be put to use to change the Cup championship. With the concern of falling TV ratings, something like a winner-take-all race to decide the championship might spark interest. I'm sure it would have it's detractors. Every format will have those. The OSRT will definitely be worth watching to see how it plays out, though.

Next fix should be the miserable failure, the Top 35 rule.
