• Your profile - review your profile to make sure it's complete and all your skills have been added (these are also important so that buyers can find you when they are searching). For one full year in my twenty eight years of life, I was once a full time employee. Waking up at 7 am, Driving along the slow moving traffic of Edsa at 8 am. Munching on my breakfast while inside the car. And working my ass off for about eight to ten hours. In between these wroking hours, I would lock up myself in the rest room cubicle and I would literally bang my head, asking myself "Why, why am I doing this?"

Ever since I was young, I knew I was not fit for a corporate work. I cannot sit on any desk for half a day because I like to move around and shake my ass off. I don't like the feel of the barong fabric as well as the those preppy long sleeves on my skin. And most iportantly, I have a hard time dealing with macho, egocentric bosses that are very common in the corporate world.

And then in one sudden phone call, my carefree life just changed. A former friend from television production, called me if I was interested to work full time for a media and IT company. After a series of interview with Harvard bred executives, they offered me my asking rates. And I signed the contrat. And for the first time in my life at 24 years old, I had a TIN, Social Security Number and all other required details for every employee.

And boy was it a nightmare. For someone who wakes up at ten am, getting up for work at seven everyday was hell. Being on the desk for eight hours, even if there's no work to do, was just pushing me on the verge of insanity. And the corporate setup for all its politics and bureaucracy was like walking on a jungle in Italian leather shoes -- highly inconvenient.

The transition back from being an employee to a freelancer was quite difficult -- emotionally and financially. As i had to reintroduce myself back into the "freelance market". And wait for a few months before projects became regualr, so income gets in regularly as well.

After three years, I could now say, it was well worth the risk and the effort. I'm now back as a freelance writer and yoga teacher. And I'm in my best part of my life so far...

I worked my whole life from my house, except for the 3 years I was Chief of Image maker Dreamer. This has allowed me to go making a mental list of what is necessary (technically, professionally and animation) for a day of successful freelance work exchange from home.

Let me translate some recommendations, and additionally add one other point of my own experience.

1. Never find freelance web designers to earn a Tender:
If you are asked to send a quote / budget proposal with graphics including my advice is to never do it. In the best case lost a lot of hours that you never paid, in the worst case magically appear on your proposal ideas in the final draft - although you have not been the winner of the tender. I quit years ago, and I was never brought problems.

2. Taxes? Spare?
Remember that you're now an office. If you can, consignee an accountant helps you manage your taxes and manage your sales / costs / investments. Nor forget to health. Try to collect enough to have a good health plan. Remember that you transfer the cost to the customer. If you need a connection 8 Mbps to work as you require, charged that. Cobra everything.

3. Computers Stay away!
If you do not worry, you'll spend all day, every day, at home. Whenever I'm cloudy with any project (can not be good to be watching the same thing for 5 hours), I got the bike, or take a walk for 45 minutes and when I return I could think about what I did, my eyes ( and my mind) resumed and usually I get back to the draft deal with new eyes.When I began picking up freelance work, I had to manage my time creatively . I don’t have to use one eye to watch him and the other to read the computer. It also serves (if such a hurry) stop of the chair, give you a tour of the kitchen and look at things from another point of view (literally pirate the jack of the piece, look from a corner, etc.).

Ah, the life of a Web worker.

I'm actually starting to feel my age. It's been stressful keeping a full-time job, maintaining a blog, and doing freelance work, but I also know, having come from a life when I didn't do anything after office, I would die if I stopped writing.

One thing we noticed when we painted the kitchen the first time around, about half way through the job, was that there was actually still wallpaper under at least two previous coats of paint. And we were adding a third. With the rush of moving in and already being halfway through the job anyway, I elected to move on and worry about getting rid of that old wallpaper later. Now, knowing that we were going to add a fourth layer of paint on top of this wallpaper that had no doubt been there since the mid-80's, I decided the smart thing to do was to strip the wallpaper before we started painting. Our friends concurred, so we made it happen.

In addition, our kitchen has popcorn texture on the ceilings, which, again, dates it a bit. Our friends told us popcorn was easy to scrape off, and retexturing is a breeze. Even though we have 15 foot vaulted ceilings and lots of angles and hard to reach places in the kitchen, it seemed like the smart thing to do, and our friends, who had done it before, said it was easy, so were were in. Now, before a single drop of paint was going to hit our walls, we were completely stripping down our walls and ceiling, and retexturing all of it.

If you've done much painting at all, you know that the painting is not the hard part; it's the prep work that's a real whippin'. You can pretty much triple the time it takes to prep when you're scraping and texturing. Every inch of your kitchen that you don't want covered in dust and old pieces of wallpaper has got to be covered in plastic. Lining up the blue painter's tape perfectly along every single edge in the room, and then making sure it adheres to the plastic takes FOREVER.

On top of that, scraping the walls was extremely difficult. The layers of paint understandably made getting through to the wallpaper a challenge. On top of that, the high ceilings and various nooks made scraping the ceilings more of a chore than we figured.

It took us two full weekends for four people just to scrape everything off the wall. Still no paint.

After scraping the walls, scraping the ceiling, texturing the walls and texturing the ceiling, at about 9:30 on the Saturday night of the second weekend, my wife and I got out the rollers and brushes and started to paint our kitchen. We were dead tired and sick of working, but the thought of actually getting paint on the walls was enough to keep us going. The good news is that we still had all the plastic and tape up from texturing, so we didn't have to worry with any of that.

At about midnight, we were finished. Though dust was absolutely everywhere, our shoulders hurt from reaching all day, and there was still a good deal of cleanup awaiting us for at least the next hour, we were excited to pull the tape from the edges and take a look at the finished product. It would make it all worth it.

As we pulled the tape, I noticed right away that some paint had leaked through onto our trim. Not a big deal; I could quickly touch that up. But the more I pulled, the more I realized this was to be the rule more than the exception. I don't know if the dampness of the texture had affected the tape, or if we simply hadn't taped well, but there was leakage everywhere. On our trim, our cabinets, our windows, our countertops.

I don't know of a time in our young 3 1/2 year marriage that my wife and I have been so bitter. Our feelings of accomplishment were instantly traded for a deeply-rooted hatred for home improvement, work in general and our kitchen. It felt hopeless and absolutely frustrating. It felt like we had wasted a full week, and our kitchen actually looked worse.

That was the first weekend of February. Today (March 16), I finally finished most of the touchups. The last thing in the world I've wanted to do for more than a month is work on that stupid kitchen. On top of that, there are still some messy spots, but my painting skills have been maxed out. It will get no better.

So what's this got to do with running a business?

There are lots of angles to make the truths of this DIY story applicable to your business. I could tell you how important prep work is, and how it's often overlooked. I could tell you that a project you're really excited about making happen can sometimes only happen when you address some issues that you don't want to deal with (like the popcorn ceiling and the wallpaper). I could tell you that it's the details, the touch-up, that makes what you do really special and different.

But that's not the point I'm going to make. Here's the real point we can all learn from:

Hire a professional when you want to get something done right that's out of your expertise. Yeah, it's probably fun to figure things out. Yeah, it's probably really cool to pull it off and discover a new skill you didn't know you could nurture. But more times than not, that doesn't happen.

I can't tell you how much I'd like to go back and hire a professional painter to come in and take care of our kitchen. Originally, we figured we'd be saving money, plus it would be fun learning how to make all of these improvements. Well, it did save money, but only about $300 when it was all said an done. And I did enjoy learning how to texture and patch, and all that. But the end result and most of the experience wasn't worth it, and my kitchen is suffering for it. It took too much time, as well. Most importantly, neither my wife or I am pleased with what we produced.

Hire a professional to help you when you get outside your area of expertise. Get a web designer, don't try to learn code. Hire a writer, don't try to "brush up" on your grammar or AP style. Get someone who's going to give you something you know you'll be glad you have. It inevitably is always worth it, one way or the other.

Working in advertising and publishing over the last 5 years has been fun but it's time for me to step out as a freelancer and contractor.

I don't really mind it because I can be a social butterfly or a flat out hermit and be happy - that's just me. I have grown to love the peace and quiet (kids and dogs aside!) of my home. Most of the time, I prefer it over the social scene.

But it is something you need to be aware of and plan for when deciding to work from home full-time.

There's no more chit-chatting with different people in the office, office luncheons, lunch with co-workers, etc.

It's just you and your computer.

There are several ways you can combat this.

• Plan lunch with a friend once a week (or more if you like)
• Instant Messaging! - Love It! I have a couple of friends that I IM with throughout the day. We chit-chat, gossip, pass jokes, etc.
• Take a break if you're working a full day and go somewhere. To the gas station, the grocery store, run some errands, get your nails done - whatever. Just some sort of break to break the mundaneness for a little while. You'll feel refreshed and ready to focus again when you get home.
• If you have a dog, take her for a walk. This is always nice for me. Me and my dogs get out for a little while, walk, play and enjoy the fresh air.
• Get out of your work area for lunch even if you don't go anywhere. Don't burn yourself out, take that break. Maybe call a friend and talk for a few minutes. Just break your mind off of work for a few.
• Go to a coffee shop and have some coffee if you're a coffee drinker. You can even take your laptop and work there for a bit if you have one and they have wireless Internet (which most do, even fast food restaurants are picking up this trend).

Get creative, there are a lots of way to combat it but those are a few ideas to keep you from getting bored, lonely or feeling too detached from the rest of the world before long.

One thing that I do find interesting though is how quickly coverage of only two months ago becomes a candidate graveyard. You've got Rudy Giuliani, front-runner, but oh-he-might-be-in-trouble, wait-now-he's-outtie. Edwards, Thompson, Huckabee, Romney, not to mention the ones that never got covered in the first place, Richardson, Dodd, Biden, Paul, Kucinich.

And now we're down to three (I guess, folks are saying that Ron Paul web message was a dropping out...?), four if you want to throw Ralph in there. And this observation struck me, because it seems to me that some thinking Dems are probably seeing this story in the Times today and thinking its about time we dig another grave. ("Democrats ... say the D.N.C. is hamstrung by its inability to raise money in any serious way without a presidential nominee to rally around.")

All in all, I'm just kvetching here ... I'm not liking how early and immediately these things just have to get settled. It all seems to be a function of "the billion-dollar president" -- if no one was concerned about raising assloads of $crilla for the next 7 or 8 months, why else would we have to narrow the field so immediately and thus subject ourselves to the most absolutely meaningless part of the campaign?
