Francis Lawrence’s previous claims to fame were directing music videos for Britney Spears and Janet Jackson before his 2005 Keanu Reeves film, Constantine. It may seem odd to put a rather new director at the helm of a huge Will Smith science fiction movie, but it does seem like a natural progression to go from Constantine to I Am Legend. This is the third adaptation of the famous Richard Matheson novel. The first was 1964’s The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price, and the second was 1971’s The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston.

I think the casting of Emma Thompson as Dr. Alice Crippin, the scientist who creates a “cure” for cancer, is brilliant. Thompson’s persona as a movie star is very close to Will Smith’s: someone that we instinctively like and trust and that warm fuzzy feeling counterbalances the cynical little voice in our heads that says this is too good to be true. We just know that any vaccine she creates is out of the goodness of her heart with the best possible intentions. Unfortunately, we all know that the path to hell is paved with good intentions.

This parallels our journey with Will Smith’s Robert Neville. Smith gives an incredible performance. In the first two-thirds of the film he is practically the whole show …except for Neville’s dog, the flashbacks to his family, and the encounters he has with the remaining infected inhabitants of New York, there are no other characters for a significant portion of the running time. We see Neville’s daily routine and while there are small flashes of wit (my favorite being the dog on the treadmill), Smith wisely reins in his comedic impulses and focuses on the poignancy and isolation of being the last uninfected human being in New York. The scene where he begs a dummy to say hello to him was amazing.

I was not as impressed with the CGI created infected human beings. They never looked very real to me, and I’m not sure why Lawrence decided to change his original plan to use live actors in those roles. The other problem I have is with the original ending. There is an alternate ending that works much better for me and fits a little better with the themes of the Matheson novel. The alternate ending reminds me a bit of Bladerunner: the protagonist makes the realization that he has made serious misjudgments and that in some ways the beings he has been pursuing are more human than he. It’s a powerful epiphany for him as well as the audience. We trust Will Smith and we’ve suffered along with his character, so we naturally lean toward his side of the story. To see that other side is important, and actually pays off moments that have been hinted at throughout the previous two acts. Without this pay off, the movie feels hollow.

Once again, I emphasize how important sound can be to a good scare. I jumped as creatures popped out at Neville, but the real shivers came from the night noises. Sound creates and holds tension whereas visuals can relieve that tension. Ambiguity is a horror movie’s best friend, and sound can provide much more of that than most pictures. Sound is also used in an effective manner in this movie by the constant Bob Marley references. I loved Neville listening to “Three Little Birds” and then crooning to his dog, Sam, “Don’t worry ‘bout a thing.”

While I still prefer I, Robot or Bladerunner, I think this film (with the alternate ending) is a worthy addition to the post-apocalyptic genre. Will Smith’s performance and the thought provoking questions that the script raises, resonates. I hope that the forthcoming prequel will take its cue from the first two acts and not from its disappointing third.

I was extremely disappointed by I Am Legend, especially considering Lawrence's previous film Constantine, so I'm pretty much unexcited, how about you?

Al menos en esta nueva película no veremos una continuación de la anterior, sino que la trama se centrará en los últimos días de la humanidad cuando un virus comienza a asolar la civilización. La acción estará centrada en la ciudad de Nueva York y volverá a contar con el doctor Robert Neville como protagonista.

Will Smith retomará por tanto el papel, contando una vez más con Francis Lawrence como director.

Se ne parlava da mesi e ora è giunta la conferma ufficiale da parte della Warner Bros: il prequel di Io Sono Leggenda si farà, e la preproduzione è già iniziata. Se il regista Francis Lawrence aveva già espresso l'intenzione di tornare, ora anche Will Smith ha firmato per comparire nel film, ovviamente nelle vesti di protagonista.

Con un incasso di 584 milioni al boxoffice, la decisione di proseguire il franchise era praticamente scontata.

Chi ha visto Io Sono Leggenda però sa che fare un sequel sarebbe stato impossibile (a meno di non cambiare attori), ed ecco quindi che è nata l'idea del prequel: il film potrà concentrarsi sulla storia di Robert Neville (il personaggio di Smith) nei giorni in cui arriva a New York il terribile virus che causa la mutazione di tutti i suoi abitanti.
Se il film originale era tratto da un romanzo di Richard Matheson, l prequel avrà una storia creata ad hoc da Will Smith insieme al regista Lawrence e ad Akiva Goldsman, produttore e sceneggitatore del primo film. D.B. Weiss (The Game) sta ora stendendo lo script basato sulle loro idee.

Sebbene il rischio di una storia forzata e realizzata solo per proseguire il franchise sia alto, l'idea di descrivere lo scenario pre e postapocalittico di New York alle prese con il virus sembra effettivamente interessante.

Today, Variety is reporting that a prequel will be made to "I Am Legend". Will Smith will again play military scientist Robert Neville and director Francis Lawrence will once more show us rubbery zombies in Manhattan. One could presume that the best part of "I Am Legend", Sam the German Shepherd, will be returning as well. Dammit...that dog made me cry. How sad for me.

Para Diciembre del año pasado, llegaba a nuestras pantallas 'Soy leyenda', y pronto (un añito quizás, aunque la fecha no esta confirmada) volveremos a ver al "bueno" de Neville en la pantalla grande.

Debido posiblemente al mal sabor de boca que dejó a muchos (para leer la reseña, pincha aqui), director, protagonista, guionista y por supuesto productores (que recaudaron la no desdeñable cifra de 584 millones de dólares), se juntarán de nuevo para hacer una precuela sobre el virus que infectó a toda la población (un 99% aproximadamente).

Francis Lawrence volverá a dirigir y Will Smith retomará su papel de científico del ejército. Pero esta vez nos contarán la historia de lo que pasó. Aquellos flashbacks que veíamos en la película, a veces "sin ton ni son", serán en lo que se basaran para contarnos la historia de lo que sucedió realmente ¿?

En mi opinión, la escena del helicóptero fue demasiado cara (la más cara de la historia del cine) y tienen que volver a meterla en una película, y qué mejor que la precuela, que al fin y al cabo será un refrito de escenas que ya salieron en esta, contándonos cosas que ya sabíamos o intuíamos. Su único fin será recaudar más dinero, ¿o no?

Warner Brothers has officially announced the hit Will Smith flick, "I am Legend" is getting a prequel.

The film company confirmed rumors that have been going around since early this summer that a follow-up to the hit movie is now in the works.

Si pensaste que habías visto todo en cuanto a la historia de los mutantes vampirísticos que se tomaban el mundo en Soy Leyenda (I'Am Legend, cuya crítica puedes leer AQUÍ) estabas absolutamente equivocado... o equivocada si eres niña. De acuerdo a lo que cuentan en /Film, Warner Bros. acaba de confirmar que se filmará próximamente una precuela de la cinta del director Francis Lawrence, por la cual ya acaba de filmar el mismo y Will Smith. La historia relatará lo que ocurre poco antes que se desate la apocalíptica epidemia y los primeros esfuerzos del doctor Robert Neville (Smith) para intentar contenerla. En la historia trabajaron el productor y escritor Akiva Goldsman, Lawrence y el propio Smith y ahora D.B. Weiss se encuentra armando la adaptación al guión. Aunque aún no hay fecha de estreno, viendo la agenda de Smith y Lawrence, bien podríamos pensar en un estreno en 2009.

Gdy dociera do Nowego Jorku, mieszkańcy muszą szybko opuścić miasto. Neville jest odpowiedzialny za tę akcję.

Rok 2012: skwer Waszyngtona, Times Square zarośnięte trawą wysokości 2 metrów. Nie ma ani jednego człowieka. Słychać ptaki oraz odgłosy zbliżającego się jelenia, który posłuży głównemu bohaterowi (on jako jedyny był odporny na wirusa w czasie pandemii) oraz jego psu za pożywienie. Neville dalej poczuwa się do odpowiedzialności za "strefę zero" - mimo beznadziejnej sytuacji, każdego dnia w południe wysyła przez radio wiadomość do wszystkich, którzy mogliby go usłyszeć. Nocą jednak wychodzą z ukrycia mutanty, które czyhają na jego życie... Neville ma u siebie laboratorium i próbuje za wszelką cenę znaleźć dla nich antidotum.

Film niezwykle pobudza wyobraźnię. Trudno wyobrazić sobie życie codzienne człowieka, który jest w ogóle pozbawiony relacji z innymi ludźmi. Czy taki człowiek może być jeszcze osobą (skoro - jak każdy - potrzebuje do funkcjonowania innych ludzi)? Mimo trzech lat przeżytych w całkowitej samotności, bohater nie pozwala sobie na zgorzknienie (albo - z drugiej strony - na kompletne zezwierzęcenie, skoro mógłby sobie wziąć dosłownie każdy z porzuconych samochodów albo wprowadzić się do dowolnego mieszkania). Stara się żyć dalej jak normalny przedstawiciel społeczności i wykazywać elementarne cnoty ludzkie. Widzimy go wstającego punktualnie rano (zaobserwowałem tu zjawisko, które może umknęło wielu widzom, a które nazwałbym idealną chwilą bohaterską - otóż Neville najpierw otwiera oczy, a potem słyszy budzik i w tym samym momencie wstaje). Codziennie o tej samej porze udaje się do wypożyczalni video, oddając obejrzany, a wypożyczając kolejny film. Wyjątkiem jest fakt przywłaszczenia wielu wartościowych obrazów z muzeum, które widzimy na ścianach jego mieszkania (np. oryginałów van Gogha). Jednak moim zdaniem zasługuje na pochwałę jego chęć odnalezienia ucieczki od okrutnego i opustoszałego świata w bliższym obcowaniu ze sztuką.

Film posiada dwa zakończenia, które przedstawiają na różne sposoby dalsze funkcjonowanie głównego bohatera. Ale obydwa przynoszą jakąś nadzieję. Uważam, że film jest godny rekomendacji - zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o połączenie weekendowego rozluźnienia w efektownej oprawie z refleksją nad człowieczeństwem w tak ekstremalnych warunkach.

• Fox 2000 has emerged from a competitive bidding situation with the rights to "Water for Elephants," Sara Gruen's best-selling historical love story. Fox 2000 beat out Warner Bros., Universal and Paramount for the project, in part because the producing team and director were won over by the company's passion and track record with literary adaptations and the attention it gives them. The book centers on a 90-year-old man reminiscing about his life and is set during the Depression, when he found work at a B-level circus taking care of the animals. He sees the brutality of circus life while falling for the wife of an abusive animal trainer. The book was on the 2006 New York Times best-seller list for 12 weeks and made the list again last year when it was released in paperback. More than 2 million paperbacks have been sold. Francis Lawrence is attached to direct ("I Am Legend"), and Richard LaGravenese repped by CAA, is one of the town's most in-demand adapters. He wrote the recent book-to-film translations of "P.S. I Love You" and "Freedom Writers." Pic will be produced by Andrew Tennenbaum, Gil Netter and Erwin Stoff. Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler is overseeing the project, along with SVP of production Rodney Ferrell.

• Fox is developing a contemporary take on the classic Walt Disney tale of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" from producers Chris Brancato and Bert Salke, feature writers David Weissman and David Diamond and director Ken Kwapis, who most recently directed the upcoming feature comedy "He's Just Not That Into You." Kwapis also helmed the pilot for NBC's "The Office." Tentatively titled "Georgia and the Seven Associates," the hourlong dramedy, produced by ABC Studios, is tonally described as "The Devil Wears Prada" meets "Taxi" set in Los Angeles' legal circles. It centers on Georgia Burnett, a young lawyer who is banished from a top law firm run by her stepmother and forced to team up with seven quirky lawyers at a storefront legal office. Some of the legal cases will be modernized fairy tales, like one about three people whose homes were taken away by Wolf Corp. ABC Studios-based Brancato and Salke got the inspiration for the project from the view from their offices on the Disney lot, which oversee the Team Disney executive building that features a fascia of the seven dwarfs holding up the roof. "Georgia" has a put pilot commitment from Fox.

Will Smith é talentoso, carismático, bem assessorado e campeão de bilheterias. Raramente erra a mão quando entra de cabeça num projeto. Há controvérsias, pois algumas pessoas consideram que sua incursão pela comédia em “Hitch, Conselheiro amoroso” e pela ficção científica na filmagem do clássico livro “Eu, robô” (baseado em obra imortal e indispensável de Isaac Asimov) foram tiros n’água... Eu, particularmente, gostei dos dois filmes, em especial do segundo, que me parece ter mais qualidades do que a maioria das pessoas percebeu...

“Eu sou a lenda” é mais um sucesso de Smith, filme que foi muito bem de bilheterias no mundo todo, mas que, penso eu, deveria ter sido mais bem aproveitado, pois a trama é interessante. A história de uma epidemia que assola o mundo e rapidamente ceifa a vida de milhares de pessoas é certamente fruto de um medo coletivo e inconsciente (como poderá ser visto e apreciado também no mais recente filme de Fernando Meirelles, baseado em obra do escritor português José Saramago, “Cegueira”), talvez resultante de nossos pecados e gula na relação estabelecida com o mundo – a natureza, as outras espécies...

E a imagem do solitário cientista militar, que a despeito de ter perdido a família em virtude da peste continua a lutar e buscar a cura, o remédio milagroso – evoca qualidades que continuamos a ter, mas que, num mundo tão materialista e ligado em dinheiro, pressionado pelo relógio e em busca de produtividade infinita – parecem irreais e distantes...

 Os problemas percebidos e que tornam o filme uma produção menos qualificada do que poderia ser referem-se ao fato que o filme é curto demais, parece queimar etapas e tem algumas seqüências simplificadas e que forçam a barra (como o trecho em que o personagem de Will Smith é salvo dos demônios das trevas pela revelação brasileira Alice Braga).

Se não fosse por esses problemas, certamente poderia ser melhor... Mas é um bom programa, ainda assim. Pode ser visto sem problemas. É, no entanto, mais um filme-pipoca, não esperem mais do que isso... (Apesar de que isso é o que, na maioria das vezes, desejamos).

Soyons honnêtes, nous n'avons pas vu quantité de films en décembre et le fait d'avoir déjà consacré une chronique au We Own The Night de James Gray nous a convaincu de ne pas faire doublon malgré au moins 3 scènes d'une perfection formelle effarante qui auraient amplement méritées de postuler à la place du film qui suit.

Faisons bref, I Am Legend, du transparent Francis Lawrence est donc notre gagnant du mois.
Outre une modestie presque hors norme dans le cinéma de studio contemporain, quelques scènes assez absurdes pour éveiller l'intérêt et le malaise, une fin qui a le mérite de jouer étymologiquement le jeu de l'adaptation, ainsi qu'une pléthore de panoramiques post-apocalyptiques tout à fait subjuguant, le film offre aussi cette courte séquence parfaite en son genre. Parfaite au sens hitchcockien, qui veut que chaque plan doit donner une information et faire l'économie d'un dialogue.

La scène est tirée du premier tiers du film, Robert Neville - qu'on sait grand amateur de viande - chasse le bétail gambadant dans un New York désaffecté sujet à une végétation nouvelle. Presque exotique. Depuis la première scène le film se plait à donner des aires d'Afrique à New York : chasse un peu brutale à bord d'une voiture rappelant un safari, herbes hautes, Will Smith, faune proche visuellement d'une faune de savane, etc.
En ce sens la plongée qui ouvre la scène appelle déjà la surprise qui la termine (le lion). Mais pas seulement.

La scène donc est d'abord une plongée sur un Neville fusil au bras entrant - on le croit - dans une plaine ou un champ visiblement laissé aux mauvaises herbes. La caméra redescend vite dans le dos de Neville pour nous montrer l'horizon urbain auquel appartient ce champ. Tout le paradoxe de l'histoire est résumé dans ce changement de perspective : la dépopulation d'un espace urbain censé concentrer des millions de personnes, l'adaptation au sein de cet environnement des protocoles de survie alors même que la culture reléguée par cet environnement n'y pousse pas (on verra par la suite que Neville est un professionnel de l'adaptation, un peu abusivement d'ailleurs).
Le film filera ce paradoxe durant toute sa première partie, intelligemment. Ainsi, le monde d'un homme seul est un rêve popart en patchwork, où le mode d'alimentation est à la fois contemporain et préhistorique, le mode de déplacement sportif et guerrier, le loisir pragmatique et enfantin, la carrière professionnelle virile et intellectuelle, les cobayes monstrueux et humains, la ville occidentale et exotique, les mannequins amis imaginaires et pièges menaçants, le destin vain et prophétique_ jusque dans la figure du chien, outil de survie et compagnon humanisé.

Vient ensuite un enchaînement de travellings et de camera portée à l'épaule où Neville s'approche, dans une hâte qui se veut malgré tout furtive, de sa proie. La volonté de discrétion est au cœur de la vie de Neville : autre paradoxe au sein d'un monde où Neville vit seul - littéralement. C'est que le danger guète : celui de voir sa solitude brisée indésirablement. Un lion surgit, danger fantastique qui s'accapare le monde de Neville et sa source de nourriture. L'apparition à venir des vampires est préfigurée. Eux aussi, danger fantastique qui menace le quotidien sans néanmoins préserver de la solitude, au contraire.

Le livre jouait mieux ce petit jeu. Le Neville de Matheson devait faire face chaque nuit à une invasion de vampire, tout à la fois rappelle de sa solitude et de sa singularité de nature mais aussi promesse d'une solitude moindre. Etrange ambivalence.

Chez Matheson, les vampires parlent à Neville et lui font même des petites blagues. La situation est plus cruelle. Mais le dilemme de Matheson trouve dans cette scène un équivalent : lorsque les autres lions arrivent, s'unissant en famille. Les vampires aussi auront cette apparence de communauté alors que Neville est seul, seul sur son bureau à attendre la réponse à un appel qui ne semble trouver aucun interlocuteur.
Enfin, la façon frontale dont Neville échappe à la scène sera réutilisé dans celle de l'entrepôt. Assez belle scène où le danger doit être regardé de face malgré la peur terrible de sa vision. Le coup d'œil sur la montre qui clôture l'action formule les obligations dont est esclave Neville. Paradoxe encore une fois puisque étant seul il ne devrait souffrir d'aucune.

Exprimée la qualité synthétique et esthétique de cette scène, l'échec du film de Lawrence en dehors de sa seconde partie mal gérée vient des monologues de son personnage_ fait incompréhensible et certainement mercantile alors que Lawrence donne la preuve qu'il est capable de cette économie et même d'une économie narrative passant par la bande son (le film est quasi dénué de musique). Mais passée une première partie réussie le film souffre donc ensuite d'une ouverture de son champ narratif trop subite qui peine dès lors à former un sens sans abattre le sens du principe d'origine.
Ne lisez plus si vous voulez garder la surprise.
La question de ce qu'il peut advenir d'un récit aussi limite se pose. Sans altérité - sinon une absolument mortelle - à opposer au personnage, peut-on faire vivre longtemps ce récit ? le film répond par l'absurde. À la question que faire d'un homme seul au monde, Lawrence répond (nous doutons en fait que Lawrence ait quoi que ce soit à faire dans cette histoire) : ne plus en faire un homme seul. Sic.
La belle idée de la première partie qui consistait à placer l'enjeu dramatique dans un cercle de contradiction où il fallait trouver un remède pour une humanité qui n'en n'avait plus les attributs est foudroyée par l'invention narrative la plus foireuse qui existe : celle du twist absolue, principiel.
Neville est le dernier homme sur terre, Neville rencontre d'autres hommes.
Le scénario nous fait l'honneur d'explications scientifique : en fait Neville savait depuis le début ne pas être le dernier survivant. Dommage que ses monologues déjà si fâcheux aient omis de nous l'apprendre. Plus rien ne surprend alors pas même la fin dénaturée du récit.

C'est alors que Matheson paraît génial avec son inversion du champ narratif. Une altérité apparaît (autre que celle du vampire, qui moins qu'une altérité praticable représente plus l'absolue de l'altérité auquel il est impossible de se confronter) mais elle n'est plus humaine.
Le titre prend son sens alors que Neville plonge dans la solitude la plus extrême : vivre avec d'autres mais avec plus rien de semblable. Je suis une légende, l'œuvre cinématographique, rate cette belle fin ; le déplacement étymologique qu'opère le film dans la signification du titre est symptomatique. De légendaire (dernier représentant d'une espèce disparue et à jamais mystérieuse - effrayante) il pense héroïque, faiseur d'exception (celui qui sauve l'humanité). La transformation de Neville, poivrot agressif et pulsionnel, en Neville star de l'armée et de la science amorçait d'entrée de jeu cette trahison sémiotique. N'est pas une légende qui veut.

Y es que si nos ponemos a pensarlo, tiene que ser gratificante ver cómo alguien crea en carne y hueso a un personaje que ha nacido de tu mente.

Vamos, digo yo.

Pero bueno, para ir haciendo un poco de tiempo, aquí teneis los dos finales de la película "Soy Leyenda". Primero, el original. Y segundo, el final alternativo.

También iba a incluir el final del libro (distinto a estos dos, por supuesto), pero faltarían ciertos datos importantes sin los que no se acabaría de entender como debe.

Así que si seguís teniendo curiosidad, ya sabeis.

I Am Legend criticada AQUÍ por tu tu sitio amigo dvdplay puede que tenga una secuela o mejor dicho una precuela, de acuerdo a lo que el director Francis Lawrence comentó durante la recién terminada Comic Con de San Diego. Lawrence indicó que en estos momentos junto al guionista original Akiva Goldsman estaban trabajando en la historia que se centraría en el período inmediatamente después a la propagación del virus que luego acabaría con el 90% de la humanidad, es decir, antes que Will Smith se quedara solito. Según Lawrence, aunque aún no tienen nada en concreto, les gustaría que regresara Smith a interpretar el papel del Dr. Neville y contar, desde su punto de vista, el desarrollo de la enfermedad. La verdad es que no sé que tan buena sea una precuela de una película cuyo mayor atractivo era la historia psicológica de un tipo que estaba solo en el mundo (y así y todo eso se logró sólo en la primera mitad). Una precuela sería como 28 Days Later... o Dawn of the Dead, pero con hombres vampiro super musculosos... mmm... no sé, no sé... la propuesta tendría que ser muy atractiva en historia (dificil) o en efectos especiales (el camino fácil y más probable). For some reason, unbeknownst to me, Warner Bros. has decided to green light a sequel to last year's I Am Legend. The film will depict Robert Neville (Will Smith is signed to reprise his role) in the final days before the virus takes over New York City. Personally, I'd rather see Francis Lawrence focus on getting Survivor made, but Survivor's been put on the back burner for years now. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes another 10 years to get it made, especially when Warner Bros. can put out some grade A material like an I Am Legend prequel instead. Hooray for us.
