I’ve cooled off on writing movie reviews lately, in part because I wrote up 28 movies in 10 da

I've cooled off on writing movie reviews lately, in part because I wrote up 28 movies in 10 days about a month ago, in part because I've been wanting to use this blog for more than just movie reviews. So I've let a few 2008 releases that I've seen pass without reviews, but still have the desire to get my opinion of them on he record. In some cases, enough time has passed since I last saw the film that I couldn't hope to write a full review, so here's four mini-reviews on some 2008 movies that may be of interest.

Read on for reviews of:
Baby Mama (2008)
Burn After Reading (2008)
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
Pineapple Express (2008)

Baby Mama (2008)

Starring: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Greg Kinnear, Dax Shepard, Romany Malco, Steve Martin, Maura Tierney, Holland Taylor, Sigourney Weaver

Directed by: Michael McCullers

I didn't catch this in theatres, instead waiting until I saw it on DVD last night, and I'm glad I waited. If I'd have spent an evening out seeing this on the big screen, I probably would have only focused on its flaws. Despite the talent of its performers, Baby Mama devolves into a standard-issue romantic comedy, playing it safe when it should have been taking chances to be an edgier comedy. But as a quiet Saturday night rental? Not bad. The charms of leads Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in this lightly-comic romp are fairly welcome, leading to a pleasant experience. Despite its ultimate predictability, there are some nice gags in here, with Fey serving as an amiable lead. Here's hoping she and Poehler gets some material more deserving of their talents in the future.

3/5

Burn After Reading (2008)

Starring: George Clooney, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins, J.K. Simmons

Directed by: Joel and Ethan Coen

Burn After Reading is a lark for everyone involved, who all seem to be having a lot of fun parodying themselves. Brad Pitt is the standout as the good-looking doofus that he used to play earlier in his career (a la True Lies), John Malkovich is doing his over-annunciating intense guy thing (a la Being John Malkovich) , Frances McDormand plays a version of the quirky busybodies she generally plays, Tilda Swinton riffs off of her ice queen image, while George Clooney has some fun with his ageing playboy image with a quirky comedic role similar to the other Coen brothers movies he's done (a la Intolerable Cruelity). As for the Coens themselves, they deliver yet another film featuring characters of limited intelligence getting themselves into a jam in the pursuit of ill-advised money, this time seemingly parodying their last film (No Country for Old Men) with another abrupt ending that messes with audience expectations. It's an entertaining affair, but you get the sense that the cast is having more fun than the audience, with a movie that is comic in tone, but lacking punchlines. Also, you get the distinct impression that Joel and Ethan are fucking with us a bit, so I can understand any resentment that might come from other viewers. For me, the film was just okay. There was some definitely entertaining moments, but overall, it felt like minor Coens.

3/5

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

Starring: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Luke Goss, Seth MacFarlane, Anna Walton, Brian Steele, John Hurt

Directed by: Guillermo del Toro

The sequel to 2004's Hellboy is in many ways the more accomplished film. Guillermo del Toro has increased his cachet since that film, and seemingly used The Golden Army to prove it. The result is a film with some wonderfully imaginative sequences, owing to the influence of George Lucas and Frank Oz as much as it does creator Hellboy Mike Mignola. The problem is that along with the positive of creating a Cantina-like atmosphere under the Brooklyn Bridge, del Toro also seemed to adopt George Lucas' knack for empty special effects sequences that view things like characters and story as secondary to the ability of filling the frame with as many bells and whistles as possible. The film was impressive at times, but significantly less fun than the previous film. Hmmm.... maybe I should've named this post "Movie Review Catch-up: Ambivalence Edition".

3/5

Pineapple Express (2008)

Starring: Seth Rogen, James Franco, Gary Cole, Rosie Perez, Danny R. McBride, Craig Robinson, Amber Heard, Kevin Corrigan, Ed Begley Jr.

Directed by: David Gordon Green

That ambivalence extends to Pineapple Express, although of the four movies reviewed here, I'd say that I enjoyed it the most. For the most part, this stoner action-comedy achieves what it sets out to do, with some uproariously funny scenes and action pieces that uniquely show what it would be like if a couple stoner dudes suddenly became action heroes (hint: it ain't pretty). Unfortunately, while it delivers the laughs and excitement you'd expect, it does so infrequently enough that the film is a bit of a disappointment. Excessive length has always been a complaint about Judd Apatow productions, but this is the first time where I really felt that the film was hurt by a lack of editing, as stretches of the film serve little purpose. Secondary plots are underdeveloped and are needless distractions (particularly with the Amber Heard character, despite the laughs Ed Begley Jr adds within the subplot), serving to expose the film as an underdeveloped edition of the now-standard Apatow formula. I'd still say that I was mostly entertained by the feature, so it did its job in that respect, but don't have any desire to watch it again, which is a first for a non-Ferrell, non-Sandler Apatow film.

3/5

I saw Burn After Reading on Friday night with Hassan and my friend Logan. It wasn't quite what I was expecting but still well worth seeing. The cast is a veritable Justice League of actors, with Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormond, all of whom give great performances. John Malkovich is amazing down to every single gesture (though that's pretty much a given), and Brad Pitt is especially entertaining, just because the doofy aging gym bunny he plays is such a fun contrast to the standard Brad-Pitt-action-hero character. Here's the trailer:

About 20 minutes into the movie, I whispered to Logan and Hassan, "This is good, but it's not quite the way it was advertised. (Yes, I engage in during-movie whispering, but only on a very limited basis and at a low decibel level.) From the trailer, I thought it was sort of a bizarro action comedy with Brad Pitt and Frances McDormond caught in the middle of some big spy plot with CIA agent John Malkovich.

All that is true, but not quite a complete picture. It's actually much more of an ensemble piece, with all five actors getting a good amount of screen time, and sort of a kaleidoscope story that follows not only the CIA plot (which is really much ado about nothing) but also the sexual relationships and hijinx between all these characters.

It's also much lighter on the action and much heavier on the bizarro. The movie almost gets surrealist at times, with moments of realism that brilliantly capture the idiosyncracies of the human ego intertwined with bizarre situations that seem to snowball beyond anyone's control. I think it's probably one of those movies, like The Princess Bride, that gives the marketing team a huge headache because it falls outside the box of anything else out there.

And, if nothing else, the movie is proof that producers/directors/writers the Coen Brothers (Fargo, Paris Je T'aime, No Country for Old Men) have maybe the widest range of any creative team out there.

[caption id="attachment_132" align="aligncenter" width="614" caption="www.quemardespuesdeleer.es"][/caption]

The film uses its own manipulation to tell a story about manipulation, and when we finally discover who's been pulling the strings, the payoff is both convincing and pertinent to the ongoing debate over what constitutes truth in the American system of justice. Making an impressive screen debut that has since led to a stellar career, Norton gives a performance that rides on a razor's edge of schizophrenic pathology--his role is an actor's showcase, and without crossing over the line of credibility, Norton milks it for all it's worth. Gere is equally effective in a role that capitalizes on his shifty screen persona, and Laura Linney and Frances McDormand give memorable performances in their intelligently written supporting roles. --Jeff Shannon

Alligator
[ 1 star out of 4 ]

I like B-movies because they are able to provide a certain level of entertainment (mostly the good kind of camp) that mainstream, studio-backed movies cannot. Unfortunately, this picture is not of those B-movies I like. It's not a complete failure because some scenes made me laugh like when the alligator attacked the policeman and the wedding chaos. However, there is no solid story, the pace is as slow as molasses, and the acting is pretty bad. Robert Forster and Robin Riker had some sort of chemistry during their more romantic scenes, but when they actually face the alligator, it seems as though they were on a completely different page. I understand that this has a low budget so I tried not to look down too much on its visual effects such as when the alligator would look a bit cartoonish, but that issue became a bit too distracting as the movie went on. I liked the scenes where Forster would ask Riker or some other scientist about their opinion on why the alligator became gigantic because they were able to come up with not-so-outlandish explanations. That said, I still can't forgive the fact that the kills were uninspired; the filmmakers tried to summon the tension that was present in excellent horror creature films like "Jaws" but they just couldn't pull it off. This might be a must-see for B-movie buffs, but I wouldn't watch this movie again any time soon even if I had nothing to do on a Friday night and it happens to be playing on the Sci-Fi channel.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
[ 3 stars out of 4 ]

This is another one of those films that solidifies my love for Frances McDormand. She's a chameleon in every role she plays and she often adds an extra spice that makes her character that much more lovable. But she's not the only one that shines here. Amy Adams more than held her own, especially during that bar scene when she sings and realizes what she really wants in life. Equally good are fascinating Shirley Henderson (who somewhat reminded me of Megan Mullally not just because of her voice but the way she carried herself) and the romantic Lee Pace. At first I didn't know whether I was going to like the entire picture because the first twenty minutes were all over the place. There was a lot of energy going on but I was doubtful whether the filmmakers could harness all of it and keep a certain focus at the same time. Eventually, I was proven wrong and the movie found its footing. It got better as it went along and I found myself caring more and more about the characters because some of them really do deserve to be happy. There was a lot of drama in the high society that McDormand jumped into (which was kind of like watching "Gossip Girl" but for adults and more toned down), but she was able to keep her old-fashioned, witty self. This would've been a better film if it was consistent from beginning to end, but I am more than happy with it. Scenes such as when the parties were interrupted by impending war was nothing short of engaging. The ending was touching but not too sappy; it is also very smart because it can lead to an interesting discussion about women's role in society.

Freshman Orientation
[ 3 stars out of 4 ]

This is not a great movie by any means, but I was really amused by it. Just when I thought it was about to take the direction of the horrendous "Camp," it pulls the rug from under me and actually shows some insight and sensitivity. A lot of people think that this film is really insensitive. Yes, at some parts it is... but I think one of the filmmakers' aim is to make fun of certain offenses. One obvious way to achieve that is to actually show such offenses. Some actors that stood out for me were Sam Huntington as the guy who pretends to be gay in order to get a girl to like him, Mike Erwin who's in a quest to find his identity, Heather Matarazzo as the one of the pledges of the sorority, and John Goodman as the bartender on one of the gay bars. All of them made me laugh out loud in some way, whether it's regarding their circumstances or how they deliver a particular line. Having said all that, this movie had some pretty big flaws. For one, this movie is only about an hour and thirty-five minutes long, but it feels longer than that. The setting doesn't look like a real college campus at all, while some of the drama are a bit contrived and high school. Plus, I wish they could've explored the relationship between Huntington and Erwin. I completely believed that they were good friends so I wish the filmmakers would've spent more time with them than showing us "college" parties that doesn't have anything to do with the bigger picture. Still, I'm giving this one a thumbs up because the allusions made me laugh and the actors are so earnest in their roles. Yes, it could've been a deeper movie but it's pretty above average just the way it is.

Well, of course, I could not stop myself from racing out to see the newest Coen Brothers foray that is Burn After Reading, but I had no trouble procrastinating on a review. Lest not one be too hasty; this particular breed of black humor comedy usually warrants a day or two to mull over its content before racing to report. I've always saved a special place in my dark heart for the Coen brothers, proudly calling Fargo and Raising Arizona two of my all-time favorite flicks. They have successfully created an empire unto themselves boasting two starkly varying genre of film that are both inevitably Coen by design - the bleak, black, and highly humorous (see: Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, The Hudsucker Proxy), and the deep, dark, and unnervingly nuanced yet masterfully composed (a la: No Country for Old Men, The Man Who Wasn't There, Blood Simple). Burn After Reading, which boasts a roundhouse of namely regulars such as Frances McDormand, George Clooney, and Richard Jenkins, falls neatly into the fangs of the black and the bleak.

Burn thrives on the incendiary foible that it the work of more than a few bumbling idiots. A hot-headed and recently wronged government operative (played nauseatingly well by John Malkovich) aims to pen his collective memoirs upon termination due to his "drinking problem" ("You're a Mormon. Compared to you we all have a drinking problem"). When his personal files are discovered by a depressed and down-on-her-luck fitness instructor (McDormand), she employs the aid of her puppy-like pal (an incredibly wacky Brad Pitt) in hopes of exploiting what she believes to be of great importance. Enter George Clooney as a paranoid ladies' man, and you've got a recipe for, well, a dementedly good time.

This certainly isn't the grandest or the smartest of the Coen's films, it lagged at certain points and relied much on its acting to carry it along. However, there is something so vividly poignant about the character development that begs forgiveness for its ludicrousness. As films go, it prevailed enough to become a good suggestion for your screwball friends. It's entertaining, and murky, and sick, sad, and slick. It's a large notch in the right direction of the Coens' belt, and it has their mark emblazoned all over it, complete with spontaneous bloodshed and highly dynamic characters. My mother sent me a simple review via text message which seemed to wrap it up much better than I could in three simple words: "Wild, wacky fun." Hmm... "Excellent job, Mom." Well, there you go.

There's so many things in my head that I want to post today. Just lemme get them in order.

First off, there's this ABSOLUTELY W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L movie that you MUST watch - Ms Pettigrew Lives for a Day. What is it about? Courtesy of Wikipedia,

Set in London just prior to the onset of World War II, the film focuses on middle-aged, strait-laced vicar's daughter and governess Guinevere Pettigrew, who has just been fired from her fourth job. When the head of the employment agency implies she no longer will assist her, the homeless and destitute Miss Pettigrew absconds from the office with an assignment intended for a colleague, unaware flamboyant American singer/actress Delysia Lafosse is seeking a social secretary rather than a nanny.

Arriving at the luxurious penthouse apartment where Delysia is ensconced, Miss Pettigrew quickly discovers the younger woman is involved with three men - penniless but devoted pianist Michael Pardue, who has just been released from prison; wealthy and controlling Nick Calderelli, who owns the nightclub where she presently is performing; and young theatre impresario Phil Goldman, who is in a position to cast her in the lead role in a West End production. As she tries to help Delysia sort through her various affairs, Miss Pettigrew is swept up into the world of high society. She is given a makeover by her new employer, and at a fashion show hosted by fashion maven Edythe Dubarry, she meets and finds herself attracted to successful lingerie designer Joe Blomfeld, who's involved in a tempestuous relationship with Edythe.

In the course of twenty-four hours, Guinevere and Delysia become fast friends and help each other achieve their romantic destinies. After a series of complications similar to those found in the screwball comedies1930s and 1940s, Delysia and Michael sail for New York City aboard the Queen Mary, and Miss Pettigrew is found in Victoria Station by Joe who, convinced that she is the one for him, has been searching for her all night. The two leave the station, arm in arm.

Well that is quite a lot to take in isn't it? No matter. All you need to know is that Amy Adams is positively gorgeous and infectious in this production. And Frances MacDormand is also fabulous. Prior to this movie, I have never heard of this MacDormand woman - But now, I can see she's really talented. The way she portrays the shy, homeless woman who evolves into a happier, more assured person, is just amazing. And it's so subtle too. Adams' character's change is also subtle, from a flamboyant and to a wiser, stronger woman. And pairing Lee Pace and Amy Adams is GENIUS! Plus, not to forget the elaborate sets, the funny, posh accent that everyone sports, AND the climactic scene where Adams sings "If I Didn't Care" - pure magic. This is one film that I won't forget for a long time.

Speaking of unforgettable, for quite some time now, Singapore has been welcoming foreigners, both high and low skilled, here to work. And it's not a totally bad thing. Hahaha, well, there is this really cute young Chinese man working at the bakery across the street. And he is to be blamed for the countless times I ate bread and pastries for lunch. But seriously, he is cute. Hahaha. He'll probably re-arrange my face if I told him that.

Well, this is all I can write today. Got to do some work. So, I'll leave you all with some cute guys:

Ms. Pettigrew gets a leg up...

Ms. Pettigrew is an entertaining period piece which does not disappoint.

Set in London, just prior to the outbreak of World War II, the musical comedy is obviously an homage to the smart screwball comedies of yesteryear tailored for the likes of screen greats Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy.

The film - adapted for the screen by David Magee and Simon Beaufoy (based on the 1938 Novel by Winifred Watson) - moves along at a fast clip, buttressed at times by catchy big band instrumentals which tend to get the foot tapping and elicit wide goofy smiles to the face.

Care to dance, anyone?

Frances McDormand (FARGO) turns in a delicious (yet poignant) multi-faceted performance which tugs at the heartstrings on occasion.

From the get-go, it is evident that the cast that buoys her up throughout the romantic comedy are seasoned pros, too. Without doubt, a handful of the talented thespians who parade across the screen sprang from a rigorous theatrical background on the stage.

It shows!

The pacing is good, and the comedic timing right on the money, as well.

The production values are both lavish and visually stunning; in part, due to all the exquisite details - from the Art Deco-inspired sets - to the scrumptious eye-catching fashions of the era.

In a nutshell, Ms. McDormand plays a down-on-her-luck governess desperate for a job.

Seizing upon a golden opportunity for gainful employment in an upper crust section of town, Ms. Pettigrew is suddenly thrust headlong into the intrigues of her new mistress - a scatterbrained Starlet - torn between the urge for love and the lure of a promising career.

It appears that the invisible hand of God is at work (Pettigrew is the daughter of a man of the cloth, after all) and that McDormand's character has found her true calling.

Her selfless acts of kindness not only set a handful of the dizzy characters on the right path, but effect a miraculous healing in the process.

In true Hollywood style, love's crush descends on Ms. Pettigrew, too.

To cynics, it is sheer fantasy.

To others, a dream worth pining for.

Buddhist saying:

You can explore the universe looking for somebody who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself,
and you will not find that person anywhere.

This weekend I saw Ghost Town which was very funny and was a great story. Ricky Gervais does an excellent job of being witty and sarcastic without being heavy handed. I think he is hilarious. It was exactly what I wanted it to be. Funny and heartwarming.
I also saw Burn After Reading. The Coen Brothers do such a good job of creating characters. Everyone was saying Brad was super funny in this movie, which he is but George Clooney was fantastic. It looks like Clooney lost a bunch of weight for this movie. And of course Tilda, Frances and Malkovich were phenomenal as well. I'm sure a film like this isn't one where people point out how great a job the costume designer did, but I'm going to. Clooney's jeans that were worn just too high up at the waist that tapered in at the bottom were amazing for his character, as was his thick gold chain. Brad Pitt's shorts and the way they had him wearing ill fitting suits were perfect for his gym-rat character. Brad is a great actor but I think we're all at the point where we feel we know Brad a little too well to have him be believable in that sort of a role at this point, but I got over it. They created such an interesting story about how it would really play out if some regular joes got a hold of classified information and how all of the characters would really behave. I actually think the scenes with J.K. Simmons who plays the C.I.A superior are genius. The Coen Brothers display insight into true human nature in this movie.

SNL was really funny this weekend. Andy Samberg did a great sketch called Mark Wahlberg talks to animals.

The latest Coen Brothers movie is the complete opposite of their last film No Country for Old Men. I

The latest Coen Brothers movie is the complete opposite of their last film No Country for Old Men. It is almost a slap-stick comedy.

Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich) quits his job at the CIA after being demoted for what he calls 'political reasons'. His wife (Tilda Swinton) is having an affair with George Clooney's character Harry, and now that Osbourne is not bringing any more money home she decides she wants to divorce him. Her lawyer tells her to get as much information about her husband's income as possible. She therefore burns a disc of top secret stuff (or 'shit' as it is referred to in the movie) to give to her lawyer.

The lawyer's secretary loses the disc at her gym. This is where the second story begins. Chad (Brad Pitt) and Linda (Francis McDormand), who are working at the gym, think they can get a reward if they return the disc to its rightful owner.

There are several stories that all come together in very strange ways (mostly through Harry's affairs). The film has an absolute star cast which, I guess, will get the audience to the cinemas. Burn after Reading is funny but falls short of being great. It is a light-hearted comedy with a few twists (nothing really unexpected though, oh, apart from a rather dodgy chair that Harry builds for his wife) and a couple of strange and unnecessary deaths.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt seem to enjoy playing the clowns (similar to the Ocean's Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen films) which is fun, but especially Pitt is not very believable.

There is no real point or moral to the story (apart from: don't get involved in things you know nothing about) which makes it peculiar enough, in my eyes, to watch. Why not watch a film just to be entertained for once?! But wait until it is out on DVD and rent it.
