For readers who track RSS feeds (and if you don’t, why don’t you?) the Sage feed reader

For readers who track RSS feeds (and if you don't, why don't you?) the Sage feed reader for Firefox (and if you don't why don't you?) is back, in the form of Sage Too.

Here's the description from the Fx extension page:

Sage-Too is a lightweight RSS and Atom feed aggregator extension for
Mozilla Firefox. It's got more of what you need and not much of what
you don't.

* Reads RSS (2.0, 1.0, 0.9x) and Atom feeds
* Feed Discovery
* Integrates with Firefox's bookmark storage and Live Bookmarks
* Imports and exports OPML feed lists
* Newspaper feed rendering customizable via style sheets
* Technorati and RSS search engine integration
* Support for the following locales: Argentine Spanish, Catalan,
Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek,
Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian,
Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish, and Swedish

I like Sage Too for several reasons, the principal one being that it integrates with Firefox in such a way that I don't notice it unless I want it. Hitting the hotkey sequence Alt+Z pops it out in a sidebar, and clicking on the feet title opens the feed page in the active window. There is a brief blurb describing the new feed, and clicking on the title will open it in a new window or tab, depending on how you have your tab choices set.

Another great feature (for me) is that Sage Too stores its data in the Firefox bookmarks folder. Since I use the Foxmarks add-on, I can go to any computer running Firefox (that I trust), install Foxmarks, sync the bookmarks, install Sage Too, and I'm "at home" for browsing and reading all my blog and news feeds. Since I use Scribefire for most of my composition and store my work in either Google Docs or Google Notebook, one more download of Scribefire and I'm in business totally, whether blogging, writing business letters, or whatever.

(BTW, have you checked out GooDocs new templates? Groovy!)

Anyway, if you want a quick, simple, unobtrusive feed reader, Sage Too is a good choice for beginners and FeedHogs alike. Y'know, thanks to Firefox and a couple of Google's services, I'm rapidly becoming hardware-independent when it comes to everything but photo editing. None of the online editors can do everything I need yet; the transmission rates are just too slow for cloning and some of the more data-intensive stuff, but the time is coming...

Tristan's Tidbit #1

Use Mozilla Firefox! If you are still using Internet Explorer, please wakeup...quit being stubborn...make the switch... You might actually enjoy browsing the internet. Not only is Firefox safer, but its most definitely better. Customization through Add-ons is what makes it so great. Learn to use the extra features of Firefox and you'll learn to love it. Some add-ons I recommend:

PicLens: Full-Screen, 3D -- PicLens transforms your browser into a visually stunning experience for finding and viewing online photos and videos. Our "3D Wall" lets you effortlessly search and zoom your way around thousands of images, videos, news feeds, sports feeds, and more. See our demo at http://piclens.com/demo

Better Gmail 2: Add useful extra features and skins to Gmail, like hierarchical labels, macros, signatures, file attachment icons, and more.

Flashblock: Never be annoyed by a Flash animation again! Blocks Flash so it won't get in your way, but if you want to see it, just click on...

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer: If you use Firefox on more than one computer, you'll want Foxmarks. Install Foxmarks on each computer, and it will work silently in the background to keep your bookmarks synchronized. You can also log in to my.foxmarks.com to manage your bookmarks from any computer.

IE Tab: This is a great tool for web developers, since you can easily see how your web page displayed in IE with just one click and then switch back to Firefox.

Gmail Manager: Allows you to manage multiple Gmail accounts and receive new mail notifications. Displays your account details including unread messages, saved drafts, spam messages, labels with new mail, space used, and new mail snippets.

Firefox Showcase: Showcase provides a new way to manage your Firefox tabs and windows by showing them as thumbnails in a single window, tab or sidebar. Includes a find bar that will filter the thumbnails, and the capability to select the thumbnails in the same way you would select files in your system.

I started to use Radar Networks’ Twine at the invitation of CEO Nova Spivak after writing this ea

I started to use Radar Networks’ Twine at the invitation of CEO Nova Spivak after writing this earlier this year (also see this). I enjoyed it for a while, especially because a lot of technology folks were hooking up with each other, especially the semantic web community, on Twine. But I found it tedious to work through beta issues and to be bothered with recommendations or news about who was saying or bookmarking things about what. (I should have turned off the emails sooner!)

I was also disappointed that Twine was taking an apparently folksonomic approach to tagging. It was as if Radar Networks was riding semantic web buzz without really embracing it openly or sharing the momentum that the invite-only community was investing in. That may not sound fair - I believe that there are semantics in the back room, but that’s how it felt and it's still the way it looks. But probably the worst part is the process that you have to go through to add a bookmark - which is the whole point, of course! (I ultimately sacrificed popup blockers, but the process still seems laborious compared to other alternatives.)

I stumbled across Zigtag almost accidentally while working for a VC firm with a portfolio of semantic startups. What I like most about Zigtag is that they make it obvious that they are building an ontology of tags and encourage users to select semantic tags (i.e., concepts) rather than folksonomic “words”. They also provide tools for managing tags that allow you to move smoothly and incrementally from a folksonomic to a more semantic approach.

The key to the semantic approach for Zigtag is that shared tags are just that - they are more precise than strings. They are not only words - they have definitions.

Unfortunately, like Twine, Zigtag's ontological model remains hidden.

My initial experience with Zigtag resulted in immediate jubilation. The Firefox plug-in works for me. It lets me type in tags with nice completion and recommendations from the tags that others have defined. Within 15 minutes I was writing to compliment Zigtag on a practical, elegant approach to the semantic bookmarking problem. I liked it much better than Twine right off the bat - and despite its book-market, I like Twine a lot! Within a few minutes I had an email from their founder, Reg Cheramy. An hour later we were talking. We talked about his early meeting with Michael Arrington, how his work compares to bulletin board or discussion forum emphasis in Twine , how he facilitates semantic tagging given a very large ontology and vocabulary, and so on.

Whether Reg took my advice to emphasize groups more or was already headed in that direction is unclear, but Zigtag now has group functionality that seems as good as (and in some ways better) than Twine's. If you go to Zigtag the web site, you can find groups to join, but unlike Twine's web site, Zigtag does not recommend groups for you based on your interests. I'm not sure this is a problem, though. Recommendations can be distracting. Nonetheless, if people want recommendations for more than content, it would be a simple step for Zigtag given the fact that they already recommend content that others have bookmarked.

I'm not too concerned with recommendations, even of content, so I cannot comment on Zigtag versus Twine on that front. Generally, there is plenty of RSS and recommendation noise to go around. I prefer the linked approach to finding information rather than searching and I don't expect recommendations to become excellent in the near term. For more on this, you might want to check out the recent news about Vulcan's EVRI investment at Webware or ReadWriteWeb.

I like to use Zigtag from the sidebar in Firefox. Actually, I owe Reg additional thanks for, in effect, causing me to abandon Internet Explorer for Firefox. I use it primarily to organize my bookmarks semantically and across machines. For those that want to do the same, you might also be interested in Mitch Kapor's Foxmarks.

I'm fine with finding groups on my own and I like seeing people and what they tend to tag, too. Now that I know they are available on the web site, though, I want them in the sidebar. The fact that they are indirect on the web site, not presented in the sidebar, and not proactively recommended probably explains why there are relatively few (especially compared to Twine). It would be nice, for example, to see groups and people organized along with bookmarks according to how heavily they use tags as I pivot through various facets.

So, on a feature basis, I like Zigtag more than Twine for two primary reasons:

Zigtag's Firefox plug-in is a great user interface while Twine's book-market is awkward in every sense that matters to me.

Zigtag emphasizes and leverages shared tagging of tags that have clearly documented interpretations Twine is too folksonomic.

The picture shown in this post shows that Zigtag already "knows" a lot about semantics. Part of the reason is that they must have a roomful of people watching for tags that people enter that are not defined. Quite a few of the tags I've added have become defined within hours (sometimes minutes) of when I enter them. We'll see how this scales up, but I like it - a lot.

The key question for both these sites is:

Are you going to share your ontology? If not, why not? If so, when or why not now?

Note that I am not suggesting they should. But if they have a reason not to, it would be nice to understand that.

It also would be nice to know whether the effort I expend on either site will be lost if they are acquired or I want to switch. That's how it looks at Twine today.

Zigtag exports my bookmarks. I can get them from or over to Delicious, no problem. But I want their semantics, too. I would really appreciate preservation of the text, preferably the semantics of my tags. Perhaps if my bookmarks were simply output as an OWL referencing their ontology? At least then I could move without losing the effort that I have put into them, whether folksonomic or semantic. I also want to know if their ontology is are any good and, if so, I'd appreciate export to OWL so that I could use bookmarks for other purposes that interest me.

The background issue of data portability, for bookmarks, social networks, and other personal profile data is huge.

If I had OWL export and an open ontology, I would be less worried about my investment in Zigtag or Twine. Consider Techcrunch's recent comments:

Zigtag’s biggest obstacle is the slew of other social bookmarking sites already available (...). The semantic tagging feature is fairly unique, but its appeal is still untested, especially against automated semantic taggers like Twine. Frankly, a lot of people are just going to stick with the simple but effective Delicious interface.

It's hard to argue with the first sentence, but the second seems harsh. Twine is getting credit that it may not deserve. Also, Zigtag recommends tags, too. But the third sentence is a problem for Zigtag as well as Twine, although the latter benefits from superior PR.

Another question, of course, is how Zigtag and Twine will fare once they try to make money. Radar Networks has stated that Twine will start running ads by the end of the year. Zigtag has made no public announcements. Delicious selectively advertises (e.g., on search pages), perhaps to feed intelligence to Yahoo's advertising network. The advertisements are so selective that the value of other book-marking sites may be limited to the intelligence that they provide to established advertising networks. If so, this will hold down valuations and slow innovation. We'll see, but obviously, I hope not..

Ontem saiu a versão final do FF3 e hoje fui tentar instalar o addon do google denovo e pra minha surpresa não funcionou novamente.
http://lifehacker.com/396112/google-browser-sync-discontinued-no-firefox-3-support

If you are not using Firefox by now, you should be. Just one of the many reasons is foxmarks. The problem with a heavy travel schedule is you often end up working on multiple machines like your work desktop and laptop plus your home computer. It can be down right annoying to go looking for a site you need only to realize you bookmarked it on another computer. Foxmarks ends that frustration by using its web servers to sync your bookmarks anywhere you have the extension installed. You have to do is log-in in once and you are done. Paired with Portable Apps on your thumb drive, you can always have the information you need where you need it with no hassle.

For browsing social bookmarking website, some Firefox add-ons provide a application that can help user to use and operate it.

SimpleDelicious

SimpleDelicious provides realtime syncing with your Del.icio.us bookmarks and ease of use right from your browser menu. You can access your bookmarks from anywhere with this firefox extension.

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon is an increasingly popular bookmarking tool. The StumbleUpon add-on is described as "collaborative surfing tool", because you can browse websites according to what other people recommend. StumbleUpon discovers web sites based on your interests, learns what you like and brings you more.

ClipMarks

With Clipmarks in Firefox, you're always one-click away from sharing any piece of media you find on the web. Like scissors for web pages, Clipmarks lets you capture the specific content on a web page that you want others to see (text, images or video). Once you've clipped something, you can share it anywhere on the Web, including Facebook, your blog, by email or on clipmarks.com.

Google Notebook

Google Notebook is very similar to Clipmarks, but has better Firefox integration. It also works in IE6. As with Clipmarks, the user manually extracts text and images out of the page - but this information is unstructured. Google Notebook has had mixed reviews so far, but we think Google is currently
putting in resourcesto improve it.

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer

FoxMarks Bookmark Synchronizer is an easy way to sync your Firefox bookmarks, if you use Firefox on more than one computer. It is very simple, but does its job nicely and has been well received by Firefox users.

I searched for alternatives, and located Foxmarks. Unfortunately, this service also has no support for Firefox 3 (there appears to be an invite-only beta version designed for Firefox 3).

I would love to see Google update Browser Sync so that it works with Firefox's new bookmarking structure. It not only synchronized bookmarks, but passwords, history, and cookies as well.

Update: Google Browser Sync has been discountinued.

Del.icio.us.

This extensions adds some function to your bookmarks. This is especially useful for anyone who uses

This extensions adds some function to your bookmarks. This is especially useful for anyone who uses multiple computers.

Essentially, what Foxmarks does is have you create an account on a server (a computer connected to the internet that hosts a website or email or other service) somewhere and store your bookmarks there. You never have to worry about migrating your bookmarks, because Foxmarks will have them backed up for you. If you use multiple computers it becomes much easier to have your bookmarks synchronized.

Privacy warning: Your bookmarks will be stored on another computer that you have no control over. Check out their Privacy Policy before you decide to use the service.

Once you've followed the link and installed Foxmarks, you'll find that it's easy to setup. After restarting, a window will pop up called "Foxmarks setup wizard." Follow the link that asks "need to set up an account?" and provide a username and password. Make sure you can remember both! Remember when using Foxmarks: the "server" that they are talking about is their computer that is storing your bookmarks. It is also referred to as the remote (as in far away) bookmark set. Your bookmarks are called the local set (the ones stored on your computer). So, if Foxmarks ever asks you if you want to "override the local set with the remote set," that means replace your bookmarks with whatever is on their server. As long as you keep the terminology straight you'll have nothing to worry about.

So that's that. Now you have your bookmarks stored remotely, and Foxmarks is by default set to automatically synchronize your local set with the remote set. So when you add a new bookmark, it gets added to their server as well. All you need to do on your other computers is install Foxmarks (with Firefox, of course) and log into your account. You'll never have to worry about your bookmarks again.

On any normal day, I'm most likely to use at least 2 to 3 different PCs and on these PCs I can either boot on Linux or Windows which means that I have 6 different platforms (Fiesty, Dapper, OpenSuse 10.3, Windows 2000 -2 machines and Windows Media Centre) on which I'm likely to browse the web.Since most data is now stored on the web this doesn't pose any major problem but I still have my bookmarks locally on each of these machines - going to delicious each time, on my crappy Internet connection, is a pain and so I endup having different bookmarks on the diffrent PCs. So how do I do when I need a page which I bookmarked at work and I'm at home?
Foxmarks

Foxmarks is a nice little extension (Add-on) to firefox that allows you to sync your bookmarks. As soon as you've created an account, your bookmarks will be uploaded on the foxmarks server and as soon as the extension is installed on another machine, it will allow you to sync you bookmarks. The end result is sync bookmarks on all machines.

Foxmarks + del.icio.us (I'm just thinking aloud here)

So since Foxmarks and del.icio.us seem to work so well, why not integrate these two systems. del.icio.us allows you to tag pages which bookmarks do not but an extension which modifies the bookmark abilities of your browser could do the trick and ask you for tags when a page is bookmarked. Sync your foxmark and del.icio.us account could prove a winning combination.
