The art of Palm Reading has been popular for ages. It is believed that fortune telling is more than telling people what they want to hear. Some view Palm Reading as a science. Palm Reading is an art and therefore not everybody who claims to be a Palm Reader knows his stuff.

Roadside Palm Readers take advantage of people's helplessness and tensions by giving them tidings of a bright future. Most of the Palm Readers who advertise in newspapers appear on television are fakes. The craze to knowing the future from soothsayers is rapidly increasing youngsters who are always keen to know about their future. They show their hands to anybody who claims that he or she knows Palmistry.

Students visit Palm Readers to know about the awaited result and girls about their marriage and marital life. But in the modern times no-one is sure whether the Palm Reader is a fake or knows what is what. One can find Palm Readers in every street and 90 percent out of them know nothing. Some sit by the roadside while other have opened their offices and they advertise in newspapers and have their visiting cards printed.

So popular is Palm Reading among the youth that Palm Reading stalls are a regular feature at functions in colleges. Mazher Abbas, a university student, told The Post that whenever any function is organised they book a stall for fortunetellers to attract more and more youngsters.

When The Post talked to a roadside Palm Reading in Raja Bazaar he said mostly uneducated people came to him to show their hands and they want to hear good things.

"Almost every time I tell everyone the same things and they believe in me. They become excited and take a sigh of relief and feel a bit relaxed."

Some popular fortune prediction shows on TV - Tarot Tell on Headlines Today, Tez Taare on Aaj Tak and Teen Deviyan (3 women experts in 3 different arts of future prediction) on Star News. I haven't mentioned the lesser known channels or the religious channels forecasting the future. All of them have their own Vaastu, Numerology, Tarot card shows. These popular shows tell viewers about their luck on that particular day. The standard predictions are "something very good is going to happen to you" or "beware of travelling today" or "someone very close to you will help you" or "don't start a new venture today". All general predictions. All in everyone's daily morning forecast.

Now have a look at their advertisements-

"Watch Pandit ....... lay bare in front of you the mysteries of the stars. You can also send your personal queries and horoscopes and get advice from Pandit ........ If you want to have a one-to-one conversation to untangle the mysteries of your future, then pick up the phone and give us a call." The answers are mostly the same for all their viewers. All very generalised replies applicable to all of us.

This particular ad impressed me :) Have a look at the presentation and the qualifications of the advertiser -

"---- is an ace international Vaastu expert, Numerologist, Tarot card reader, Reiki master healer and Spiritual guru. He has been interviewed by CNBC (AWAZ) TV channel for Vaastu tips. He has been invited and featured live on JAIN TV channel as guest Vaastu expert. His hot tips have been published in What's Hot, The Times Of India; Lucknow Times, The Times Of India; and in What's Hot, The Times Of India. His work spreads from international to national boundaries and his follower clients are extremely satisfied with him. He is born and brought up and presently stays in New Delhi. He is a vegetarian as he feels that spiritual awareness is greatly enhanced on a vegetarian diet. He believes in non-violence (Ahimsa). You are a most fortunate one to take his consultation with prior appointments."

This gives me an idea ;) if vegetarianism is such an important factor in raising spiritual awareness then I am a fit candidate!! We have been vegetarians for generations.

When I am bored of the regular stuff on TV these programmes are perfect entertainers. No violence, no objectionable views and no irritating politicians!
