I'm taking notes on both of them, and they're full of cool ideas and aphorisms (especially McLuhan). But they don't have any corroborating statistics or evidence. Shirky has a lot of examples, and the difficulty of doing research online makes me sympathize with him. But as a reader, I really do wish there was more support.

McLuhan, however, revealed the coolest thing I've ever heard of. In a lecture he gave in 1964, he references a piece in Fortune from that same year. Apparently, some big business firms had hired science fiction writers and employed them to write stories based on the technologies the companies were developing. McLuhan's point was that the artistic mind can predict what the market can't. My point is that this is the coolest idea I've ever heard of in my life, and I want to read more about it. Unfortunately, Fortune has not seen fit to put this story online, but I'm going to start doing research into this. This is an idea that shouldn't be forgotten.

Je suis encore surpris de voir que des gens confondent à se substituer au vendeur. Vous devez prendre l'affiliation comme un échange, un partenariat, entre vous et le vendeur.

Le vendeur propose un produit et vous le vendez pour lui contre commissions.

c'est un excellent moyen de se faire de l'argent en vendant les produits des autres car vous ne devez pas vous embarrasser de créer des produits ou de faire un page de vente.

Mais l'affiliation n'est pas à prendre à la légère. Il ne suffit pas de prendre un lien, de le mettre sur un site, une page, une annonce, et attendre que les choses se passent. Il existe des techniques qui permettent de générer des milliers d'euros de commissions par mois.

Ce n'est pas un système miracle. c'est logique.
Si je vous expliquez comment faire. Comment avoir du succès dans vos programmes d'affiliations. Généralement, de telles indications sont indiquées pour des sites en anglais. J'ai une multitude d'ebooks en qui parlent d'exploser ses affiliations, mais ils parlent tous de clickbank, la plateforme américaine.

Autant dire, inutilisable par chez nous.

Sauf que maintenant, nous avons notre clickbank francophone. c'est 1TPE.com. Je ne vais pas vous parlez de 1TPE mais de la manière d'en tirer profits.

DISCLAIMER: I promise to post my real review of the movie Rock Star tomorrow.

Tonight I will talk about some of the apprehension (I won't say "fear") that is involved with following your dreams. As you may or may not know, I am from Texas and I moved to Arizona to pursue my master's degree. Now that I'm officially a master, nothing holds me to the Grand Canyon State except four years' worth of friends and familiarity.

In two weeks, I will set off on my journey to find my fame and fortune as a writer. According to my predictions, this journey will take me to LA, NYC, Europe and finally drop me off in Austin to live out my days in the state of my birth. But first, I must make a pit stop in Las Vegas to build my freelancing portfolio and save up some fortune to fund the rest of my travels.

After a lifetime of being tethered to a textbook, I am excited to embark upon this great adventure. But tonight, I felt sad to leave all friends. That nostalgia devolved into a funk where I kept thinking that all the good memories to be had Arizona had already been had. I nearly lost it, but then I remembered that writers (this applies to all people, really) benefit from looking forward instead of backwards. As they say in rock climbing, "Don't Look Down!" And tonight was the real life equivalent of taking a good, long stare at the rocks below. But I'm back on track. And as they also say in rock climbing, "focus on your next foothold." I guess, in my case, they mean Vegas.

Ce mois ci le n° du magazine Challenges publie son désormais traditionnel Top 500 des fortunes professionnelles françaises. Ce classement est basé sur la valeur (ou valorisation) des actions détenues (pour les sociétés cotées) ou sur le CA, les résultats et les actifs nets (pour les sociétés non cotées).

Comment se comportent les champions du net ?

Quelques belles entrées (Jacques Antoine Granjeon - vente-privée) et quelques belles dégringolades (Marc Simoncini - Meetic - avec une fortune qui fond de 126 M€) et, somme toute assez peu de représentants de la nouvelle économie. Ne sont pas pris en compte ceux qui ont vendu leur entreprise (Je pense notamment aux fondateurs de aufeminin.com) puisque si leur fortune personnelle est certainement considérable, leur patrimoine professionnel s'en trouve, de fait, diminué d'autant.

Cryptic ghosts and shadow selves

I woke into a tangle of covers, noonhour late entry into waking life. Started the morning with stretches and pushups, washed my hair and pulled myself together, made a quick coldcut and tangerine breakfast, drank a single cup of burnt black coffee, checked some torrents' status, shot off several resumes, and looked at the small stack of change on my table. Enough for a Jones soda.

I bypass the clusterfuck of Kitchener streets with the train tracks. There was marginal city planning (if any) in the rise of the old industrial Berlin, the streets turn irrationally making sickle spins, sometimes giving the illusion of a straight away until you discover a subtle curve elongated the route of point a through b by about 5 blocks. If you follow the main streets you'll see the parallel ones turn away from each other like split ends, but the train tracks cut through them all in the other direction making a short of pretzel that can save upward to 30 minutes cutting across town. The tracks are peaceful, quiet non-places where the world seems to stop, save the flies and the sparrows.

I found my centre of balance, focused and walked down a rail from Ahrens down to Guelph street, determined not to fall even once. I did, once, but blamed it on some voodoo hex out of my control. Down on Moore, beside the cemetery I noticed something curious marked across a pane of a bus shelter. In frantic, lowercase black printing that looked as if it were scrawled out by a crazy under pressure was a long poem that filled the entire pane of glass.

I examined the poetry and the font it was written in very closely for several moments, reading and re-reading the poem. The letters formed a cryptic mess of fragmented images, something delicate and jarring like seeing the twisted insides of a fancy windup clock strewn across a table, beside the face and ornate casing - uncomfortably honest and alien.

I recognized all of the pieces, fragments of the poetry, the words and arrangement. They were mine. So was the printing. But I don't remember writing it, and it wasn't my poem. Just pieces, little ripped up flakes of Apartment 10 and Ravines thrown in the air like confetti, landing in this way. But it wasn't randomly arranged, or it didn't seem like it if it was.

I took several photographs of it with my camera phone, and cut through the cemetery to Central Market. I bought a Jones Cream Soda, and stole a pen from the checkout. I followed the same way back, stopping again at the bus shelter to copy the poem down on my arms.

I want to be barrooms

fixed-light red liquors;

stalwart image of myself

the people are desolation

dragged with bound ankles and

wrists by marching tribes of st. catherine

basement sundown

embroidered on man by cold air and bottles

unclean laundry; hallucinations

from our sun inside of trivial pills that gave him

things and places from an empty outline

of lost letters and faded fragments

I read a lot of snowfalls

breath clouds the street

freezes their canyons

windowless barren soil

laugh cracked streets;

spaces in-between those dark

reflections of politique

from far off televisions:

chinese and the whites in a welfare office

with coyote faces chatting to themselves

imaginary pianomen listen

hearing voices myself

and I swear an accusatory empty world:

"one of six people on here...

and soon you won't see streets

of a man bound at golden glory and

then you'll become crazy?"
have a dollar to give galaxies?

I'm lying on desert drought

and we need it to feed

flower shadows

everywhere

That may be anybody’s guess. But the education sector, so far immunized from WTO and GATS negotiations, is begging for a ceding of state control.

In a way it’s odd that private investment for profit should still be disallowed in education, particularly in higher education, after two decades of avowed liberalisation. Two decades is plenty of time to implement cultural safeguards. Investments by charitable trusts and religious institutions have been a trickle, and not universally appreciated.

The National Knowledge Commission seeks a nearly four-fold increase in the number of universities by 2015 for India to maintain any competitive edge. At present only about a tenth of college-age Indians are even enrolled in college; China’s comparable gross enrollment rate is two times that.

In order to increase India’s college GER to 15 per cent by 2015, the Knowledge Commission recommends that spending on higher education, which accounts for less than a sixth of the total spent in education, be doubled to at least 1.5 per cent of the GDP.

Even with limited non-government investment in higher education, nearly a third of college students are enrolled in institutions that receive no government aid.

Additionally, India is under pressure to enhance quality in the existing 350 postgraduate universities and their respective families of about 1,770 undergraduate colleges, which together constitute one of the world’s prodigious systems of higher education.

An average Indian university administers more than 100 affiliated colleges; a few universities administer as many as 400. It is akin to a poor family raising scores of demanding kids. India’s per capita spending on higher education, according to UNESCO figures, is one of the world’s lowest.

Members of the Knowledge Commission are aghast. They want some sort of “family planning” for universities – creating as many as 1500 smaller, “more nimble,” universities by 2015, each taking care of far fewer colleges and spending far more per student.

Clearly, immense investment in higher education is a need of the decade.

Where the money? The government’s resources are already straining from the unmet challenge of universal literacy: India has 380 million illiterates, more people than the populations of the United States and Canada combined.

Other than raising public bonds, inviting investments from competing private entrepreneurs may be the only sustainable solution. John Elliott of Fortune estimates that investment potential to be $40 billion per year and to increase to three times that in a decade.

So what is the government doing?

Earlier in July, Harvard-educated science minister Kapil Sibal, during a visit to Bangalore, declared his intention to invite foreign direct investment (FDI) in higher education. Not just private but foreign too. Whether Sibal was speaking for the Union cabinet is unclear, but he sure got the Communists’ goat: Three weeks later, CPM secretary Prakash Karat pulled the rug from under the government, albeit over the nuclear agreement.

(Ah, was that a grin crossing Mr. Sibal’s countenance?)

So what might be some implications of opening the sluice gates of higher education to private and foreign investment?

# Dollars/Euros would fund the pursuit of applied, high-demand, subjects (biotechnologies, informatics, telecommunications, chemical engineering, etc). Some investment would go to the humanities (law, mathematics, philosophy), a trickle to the social sciences (psychology, political science, linguistics) and whatever remains to vocational/trade subjects (aviation, metal work, information technology, etc).

# Academy-industry ties would turn more universities, to a larger extent, into petri-dishes of corporations. R&D activities would migrate from corporations to universities due to lower costs. So more active campuses, more rigorous program requirements, more robust degree programs. Result? More patents and other intellectual property, which in turn would attract even more investments, more trickle-down returns.

# A substantial spike in sources of research funding outside the social sector would result in more avenues for productive student employment, more incentives for creative faculty, a tenure system for professors based on research productivity – more reasons to pursue higher education.

# Education would be priced much higher; tuition and fees would be driven not by utopian fundamentals such as margins of profit or social need but by the inexorable demands of the market. Banks and other lenders would enter a golden age. Credit rating of individuals would blossom as an industry in itself.

# Resistance to egalitarian programs such as reservation in college seats would get stronger, more so in reservation in faculty positions: Disadvantaged backward/rural students would find motivation to be as competitive as ever.

# Universities from America and Europe, eager to expand their reach and coffers, would be able to offer high quality programs on their own terms: How about access to the portals of Columbia, MIT or Cambridge while sitting in your red-oxide verandah in Vontikoppal? There’d be a celebration of the scientific method, probably with greater emphasis on process than on concepts.

# Short-term disadvantages to regional aspirations such as Indian systems of medicine and therapy, the Kannada chaluvali, Indology and Eastern philosophies would be corrected over time by the higher-impact creative activities and research.

# The academic year’s pace would hasten; university schedules would move into more flexible, credit-driven semesters or quarters.

In Los Angeles your status is dictated by the kind of vehicle you zip around town in.

Sad, but true!

Makes sense, then, that when you pull up in front of "The Villa" - and a swarm of ravenous paparazzi descend on 'ya - that your Beamer, Benz, or boxy Volvo gleams under the light of the silvery moon.

God forbid you should be busted for a DUI in a late model sedan with a nick or two in the door and a swirl of dead leaves decaying beneath the windshield wipers.

At Santa Palm Car Wash in West Hollywood, a crew of uniformed experts is prepared to slap that auto into tip-top shape, but the detailing will cost you extra!

First time I heard the term - "detailing" - I shook my head.

Say what?

It's an anal retentive's ideal approach to a "car wash" - with an emphasis on painstaking nerve-racking attention - to the essential nitty-gritty. At Santa Palm, for instance, a gang of veritable whiz kids add sparkle to the chrome grill, luster to the interior headrests, and a dash of spit-and-polish to set off those hub-caps.

Yeah, no crevice, crack, or crawl space goes unchecked!

In a nutshell, it's a Hollywood-style fancy-smantzy way to extract a few extra bucks from the tony elite!

But, Santa Palm Car Wash stands out from the others - if only for its celebrated clientele - who swear by the foo-foo experience.

In fact, many of the glittering elite snap up a glossy still from their portfolio before they head out to the popular scrub joint, sign a heartfelt note to "Sam" (the owner), then mingle among the other notables out front as the minions work magic on their precious glide mobiles.

In the old days - when I first sauntered into Tinsel town with stars in my eyes - quite a few of the local merchants were inclined to tack up a dog-eared publicity still or two at the entrance of their establishment.

It was great for stirring up a bit of idle chit-chat - and a much-needed distraction - as the customers lolled about and waited patiently for the cashier to rustle up the dry cleaning or discreetly pack up and tally the liquor tab.

At Santa Palm the tradition is a class act!

At "Sam's", each keepsake is a veritable treasure; framed under pressed glass on a custom-made wall that stretches all along one side of the scrubbing paraphernalia.

The collection is quite amazing and includes: a dashing Dudley Moore astride a pristine Roll Royce; a perky Shirley Jones beaming a winning smile (a dead moth managed to settle inside the frame of her mug shot, somehow); a faded shot of Ann Miller (with a boa constricting her); a chubby-faced Rock Hudson lookin' a little worse for wear (must have been in the "McMillan and Wife days". That catered food will pack on the pounds, fer sure!), and one of my faves, actress Ann Gillian (I acted in "This Wife for Hire" with the sexy talented woman a few years back).

In addition to the actors, mixed in for good measure, are a handful of celebs from the music biz; The Temptations, in a snazzy band shot; Kiss, dolled up in a ghoulish, signature get-up; Cher, with her foot resting on a barbell, of all things (must have been in the days when she was into bagel boys, I guess); and Edgar Winter caressing his horn.

Some photos are faded, others poorly lit. A few are slick and professional, with the names of Managers and Agents stylishly etched on the edges, for easy reference. 'Ya never know, the exposure may land a bookin'.

On occasion, the personalities peer out like old friends from the past; for example, Sally Struthers posing in her thin days; gorgeous Farrah Fawcett enticing gawkers with a publicity still taken at the height of her poster power (when teen-age boys pined for her as a Charlie's Angel); Jimmy Connors spinning a winning ball; while a weathered mug of Columbo comforts, as he tokes on a crusty cigar.

Holy cheese whiz, Batman! There's Robin in his kitschy get-up, too.

So many stars in the great firmament.

And a mug or two that faded away into oblivion.

Maybe memory doesn't serve me well, but there appears to be a face - and a name or two - that just don't jangle any bells.

Don Blanton? Blair Ashley? And who the heck is the male fitness model - with just one name - Sebastian?

Speaking of one name-wonders...Angelina didn't make the cut, doesn't grace the wall; but, Fabio does - go figure!

Yup, pecker - um - pec power goes a long way in Tinsel town.

Ah, all the stars that never were, are pumping gas and parking cars?

Then, there are the "Tony Orlandos", plugging weight-loss programs for suburbanites, waiting for the fickle finger of fate to turn around.

Heh, come backs are big in Hollywood.

Hold on to that memorabilia; it may be worth big bucks one day!
