The latest tests found that Chinese liquid dairy products met the new temporary restrictions on melamine, the country's top quality control agency said on Saturday.

“In tests on breast cancer cells, researchers from the University of Cincinnati found that Bisphenol A (BPA) may protect cancer cells from dying off when they are exposed to anti-cancer drugs.”

UC researchers used the same low-dose amounts of BPA that are found in the normal adult.

“They found that BPA acts on cancer cells in a similar manner to estrogen. Estrogen stimulates the creation of proteins that protect cancer cells from chemotherapy drugs.
Researchers have long known about this estrogen-induced effect on chemotherapy. However, they have been puzzled by the fact that some women who have less estrogen in their system, such as post-menopausal women, can still be resistant to anti-cancer medications.

The researchers said the findings will help scientists determine why these and other cancer patients, such as those with advanced stages of the disease, are resistant to chemotherapy.”

Very interesting findings. Wonder what the FDA and their cronies in the plastics industry will say to dismiss this?

This is yet another study, in a long and growing list, that shows BPA is indeed harmful at even low doses considered “safe” by the FDA.

Banning BPA will certainly send a message to manufacturers (who are already feeling the pinch in the baby product industry) and the government, that we will not stand for this. BPA is commonly found in the lining of canned foods and soda cans, dental fillings, polycarbonate water bottles, polycarbonate baby bottles and likely lurks in other areas we do not even think about – medical equipment for one.

How do you avoid BPA? Typically, BPA is found in polycarbonate plastic containers – look at the bottom of the container, if a recycle #7 symbol is there, it very likely contains BPA. However, it does not ALWAYS mean BPA is present – i.e. some of those single serve fruit contains are layered plastic and must be labeled as #7. But if the plastic is translucent and hard like glass, it’s more than likely made of BPA. Avoid canned foods (except the Eden Organics line which use another technology and their cans are BPA-free) and canned sodas. If you formula feed—watch out, many formula cans are lined with BPA, so at minimum use a powdered formula and not a liquid.

Courtesy to Pokernews.com, they just posted an article about how a Dutch Professor has used a formula to calculate that poker is more of a skill game that it seems to be. Using the formula, it has been used to compare games of skill to games of chance. The formula  they used was

Skill = Learning Effect/ (Learning Efect + Chance Effect)

A game of total chance has a skill rating of 0 such as dice. Poker was examined as .4 which is apparently quite high compared to fantasy sports which scored a .3. It also scored way higher then blackjack.

Poker to me seems to be compared to blackjack more then it would be compared to chess in a person's mind. People automatically assume that poker is more like blackjack because of the casino quality and maybe the old time thought they have in their head of old people saying "All-in" in savy texan accents. I would rather assume its closer to chess though. With each decision there comes benefits and consequences in both games. Each one relies on the skill of the player to make the correct decision every time. When making the correct decision every time in poker, statistcally if luck is favored in each players way, then the person who makes better decisions wins more money. Though, if this is true, poker bots would theoretically beat humans everytime, but they haven't. Poker bots do not have the instincts that humans do. While pokerbots do the correct decisions now, humans have reasons they might have caused a mistake, or use their mistakes to influence their future decisions. And also, there is the factor of luck.

Even though, I love the fact of people coming up to me and telling me how they can beat me in poker. This means that it is spreading quite quickly and I encourage it go also. For people who do believe poker is a luck game, all they have to do is get lucky right? When you watch poker on TV, whent he amateurs get lucky, Pros can get away most of the time. But when the pros get lucky, then what can you do? Professionals are professionals because they earn the most money, and thats true. The more money you have, the more famous you are, and then when your a constant winner, your a professional. If poker was just a luck game, there would not be any professionals. Because there is a skill involved, and the pros are still constant winners, that means luck cannot be that big of a factor. There are blackjack professionals because there is some skill to blackjack. While being only maybe 2% favorite over the house, that is still a favorite and that small amount of skill sometimes does change if they go home a winner, or if they keep on losing.

So if you wanna play poker, LEARN it, and then call me up or play with me at Pokerstars sometime. I'm not that good, but I have learned it.

Penso sobre a situação dele no início dos anos 90. Ele era uma jovem promessa e foi para a fórmula 1... De repente ficamos órfãos do Senna e despontava o Schumacher. Ele só teve a obrigação de substituir um mito, muito além de um piloto, e superar o melhor profissional que passou pela fórmula 1 na sua geração.

Mesmo com essa pressão absurda, foi vice campeão várias vezes. Sabe o que isso significa? Que dentre todos os pilotos na principal categoria do automobilismo mundial, ele já foi o 2o melhor. Claro, venceu várias corridas. Além disso, mostrou emoção quando ganhava e sempre sorriu.

Mas... virou sinônimo de chacota. Quais as raízes profundas disso? Será que a expectativa excessiva por substituir um mito? Ou nossa intolerância por não ser o melhor? (... o que é ser o melhor?) Quanto disso levamos pro nosso cotidiano? Quantos Rubinhos não recriminamos no dia-dia? Quanto de Rubinho temos em nós e não olhamos?

Sei lá... Às vezes sinto que se recriminasse menos o meu Rubinho, pararia de sonhar com meu Senna e exterminaria minha vontade de parecer Schumacher. Sentaria para fazer o que eu posso. Nem mais, nem menos.

Bem. O sistema funciona da seguinte maneira. Divide-se o número de votos válidos pelo número de cadeiras na câmara para se obter o Quociente Eleitoral (QE)*. No caso de Itajaí (vamos usar como referência), este quociente foi 8315 votos. Dividindo o número de votos do partido/coligação pelo QE temos o Quociente Partidário (QP). *Eu tinha falado coeficiente, mas foi um erro de terminologia matemática. Aproveito o ensejo para corrigir esta falha.

Exemplo:

PP - PR - PSDB » 28.501/8315 = 3,42 = QP = 3

Para simplificar vamos fazer a conta da seguinte forma:

Sendo que a câmara de Itajaí é composta por 12 vereadores, ainda faltam 5 vagas para serem distribuídas entre os partidos/coligações que atingiram o QE. A distribuição destas vagas é um pouco mais complicada, pois é feita através de uma média com critérios estabelecidos pelo Código Eleitoral Brasileiro.

We had a nice visit from Auntie Erin this past weekend. Having Erin here was really great for us since she is so good with the kids. Matthew and Christine also came by to meet Rylee and hang out for a little bit. Joey served as the entertainment for the evening as he played pirates with everyone, complete with his pirate hat and pirate ship with seat belt (changing pad). It was hysterical!

Rylee was experiencing symptoms of colic for several days, which made her miserable, but I got her switched over to a soy based formula and now she is as happy as she can be! Last night she and I had a great night. She only woke up two times and I was up for about 45 minutes each time. She ate and slept perfectly for a 2 1/2 week old.

Joey is back to his old self. He is a wonderful big brother who is learning to share his time and attention with his sister and he has a new found love for taking care of her and helping mommy. During Rylee's morning nap today Joey and I sat down to do some school prep work and he did so well! He can now read and write cat, hat, sat, fat, bat and rat! He is really excited about learning to read and write and we couldn't be more proud of how quickly he is learning. Maybe I'm biased, but I think he's smartest kid I know. : )

What was hard though, was his jetlag when we arrived which is understandable since there's a 12 hour difference in time between Manila and Atlanta. So yeah, I didn't get much sleep at all for the first couple of days. He would sleep in the middle of the day which I didn't mind at first since I was able to get things done but then realized his sleeping in the day meant he would be wide awake in the middle of the night! Yep, I still have the dark circles under my eyes to document those first couple of nights. His schedule has been much more forgiving now though. He actually slept around 9 last night (yay!)

It's hard being apart from Ivan. I feel like I'm a single mom even when I'm not. I kinda feel the same way I did when he was a newborn. My mom and siblings would help me but usually just to watch him while I take a quick nap or clean his bottles. Ultimately, I'm his sole caretaker. Okay, I probably should stop my whining now since I'm well aware that there are moms out there that have a much harder time than I do and probably don't receive any help AT ALL. My heart goes out to them.

Stephen, who used to always prefer his dad and "yaya" (nanny) over me now prefers me to anybody else here. I know it's because I'm the only one he knows here but I still feel good about it. He actually calls me "mama" now! He called Ivan "dada" all the time but he just started calling me "mama" a day before we left the Philippines. It was the perfect timing. It's almost as if I can tolerate all his tantrums and whining as long as I hear "mama" at the end.

Now that his sleep pattern is back to normal, I'd really like his appetite to be the way it was when we were still in the Philippines. He hasn't been eating since we got here and it's got me worried.  We ran out of his milk-based formula a couple of days ago and he refuses to drink whole milk. He'd sip a little bit and then throw his bottle back at me. It's a good thing I was able to find an unopened unexpired can of his soy-based formula. He drinks it but we're gonna run out of that soon too. Then when it comes to solid food, it's not any better. He only likes eating crackers and cookies. Anything else, he'd let me spoon it into his mouth but then he'll spit it right out. My family has been telling me not to worry so much.. that he'll eat when he's hungry. I hope this is all just temporary.

We're going to the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) today to re-apply for his medicaid. I called them yesterday and was told that his case had been closed. We're gonna go there today to see what I need to do to get it for him again. Then if we have time, we're gonna go to the Acworth Health Clinic to see if I could get WIC again. I hate having to do all this. If it was just for me, I wouldn't bother but I have Stephen to think about and until I get a job that offers insurance or a job that will let me afford to pay for insurance, this will have to do. Wish me luck!

Okay, I guess that's it for now. I meant this post to be about all my experiences so far while back in Georgia but it came out to be all about Stephen. I'll just post about the other things later.

Two friends and I are running a stock market simulation right now. We each were given a 100,000$ account and we can buy and sell any stock we want just as we would if it were reality. Right now, I'm winning by several thousand dollars. I'm currently in the green while they are both in the red. How is this possible? How am I getting a surplus when just about every single stock right now is declining?

The answer is simple. We can actually apply Calculus to the stock market to determine rates of change and figure out which stocks are changing positively and which are not. The equation/formula I prefer to use is called the MACD formula.

Above is the MACD formula applied to the stock symbol IEF. I do not know what IEF makes or sells, nor do I care. Look at the green line and the red line in the lower half of the chart. When the green line crosses the red line from below, it is a buy signal. If the green line crosses the red line from above, it is a sell signal. I assume those lines are derivatives or something along that line; regardless, the formula works (as you can see just buy looking at it).

Now, let's take this formula and screen every single stock on the market for a buy signal. We'll get anywhere from ten to fifty results, and once we have them - bingo, we know what to buy.

You’re in your early grade school.  And everyone is having trouble with the subject called “Math”.  Well, you don’t have to worry.  Here are some tips on how to make your Math life easy to begin with:

1.    Solve puzzles.  Math is just a bunch of puzzles.  Solve those puzzles at the back of juice drink packs and you’ll be ready for Math in no time.  Have fun!

2.    Sleep early for 8-10hours.  You need to be alert and awake in your Math class.  And remember, no sleeping in class!

3.    Do skip counting.  Do it by 2’s, and then by 3’s, then up to 9’s.  This will help you a lot with the other lessons.

4.    Follow each lesson carefully.  You can’t learn Lesson 2 without knowing Lesson 1 first.  And so on.

5.    Ask questions.  Teachers give the secret formula only to those who ask.  Don’t be afraid of your teachers.  Math teachers even love students who ask questions.

6.    Do all seatworks and homeworks.  If you get used to them, you can ace all math tests with no sweat.

7.    Do homeworks right away.  Do the Math homeworks first before the other homeworks.

8.    Ask Mom and Dad.  Let them help on your math homeworks.

9.    Teach.  If you know the lesson well, teach your classmates during free time.  Learn more while meeting new friends.  And it’s always good to help others.

10. Last but not the least, love Math.  It’s the easiest way to learn it.

Here is what SafeMama found out, or rather what they didn't find out since Similac really didn't fully answer their question:

Here is what we know and what Similac is allowing us to know.  The new SimplePac™ container and lid is made of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) which indicated to me that the plastic container itself is BPA Free.  That much I know.  Here is where it gets tricky.  The representatives I spoke to, and I spoke to at least 3 because they kept transferring me when I pressed them for more information, will say this and only this:

“No portion of the container that comes in contact with the formula contains BPA.”

See the part I underlined?  That’s what concerns me.  They will not deviate from this scripted statement that I am sure their very expensive legal team created for them.  After the second rep transferred me to Pam, the Customer Relations representative specialist or whatever, I pressed further because I am not satisfied unless they say “Yes Ma’am, rest assured the whole thing is BPA Free.”

I asked Pam about the foil seal that typically is present in formula containers to preserve the product on the shelf.  I had no idea if this product even had one, but she confirmed it does.  She would not however provide me with any information regarding the foil seal, what it was made of and whether or not the foil is coated with an epoxy resin.  Many times those coatings do contain BPA.  She told me:

“We don’t have any information about that, I’m sorry.” And refused to delve any further claiming ignorance and denying she had any information to give me on the matter.  No information?  That sounds weird considering the company most CERTAINLY knows what its made of and whats on or not on it.   They don’t have any information they want parents to know is what it really means to me.

The main problem I have with their statement is that I don’t know what “comes in contact with the formula” means if they are being so strict in what they tell consumers.  Does it mean “only if you don’t turn it upside down so the formula doesn’t rest on the foil seal” count too?  Their resistance to disclose the materials on the foil seal makes me wonder.

Pam informed me that I should encourage our readers to call Similac if they have any questions.  Do go ahead and do that SafeParents.   Similac has a toll free number 1-800-232-7677 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., CST/CDT.  They would rather tell you, the ignorant consumer who doesn’t understand what HDPE is, themselves and bank on the fact that no one will ask the questions we really want answers to.

Bottom Line: To answer the original question “Is the new Similac SimplePac packaging BPA free?”  The answer for now is “Maybe.”  Or in Similac’s words “the part that comes in contact with the formula” is.

Pelo que já vimos anteriormente, fica fácil aplicarmos com os dados neste exemplo. Temos, neste caso, a matrícula e o nome, tudo junto numa mesma célula. Geralmente, isso ocorre quando importamos dados de algum programa externo.

Enfim, queremos separar o nome do funcionário da matrícula do mesmo. Como fazer, então?

Primeiro, separamos a matrícula que, neste caso, compreendem 6 dígitos fixos.

Na célula B1, digite: "=ESQUERDA(A7;6)"

Já separamos a matrícula. Agora, vamos extrair o nome.

For an arbitrary n, what is the value of that summation?

Of course, if we're interested in a summation of sins, we might as well be interested in a summation of cosines. So, let's define two functions, out of convenience.

$latex S(n) = \sum_{k = 0}^n Sin(k) &s=2 $

$latex C(n) = \sum_{k = 0}^n Cos(k) &s=2 $

Any regular reader of mine can probably predict what is about to happen next. Considering C(n) + i*S(n), we find the following.

$latex C(n) + i*S(n) = \sum_{k = 0}^n Cos(k) + i*\sum_{k = 0}^n Sin(k) &s=2 $

$latex C(n) + i*S(n) = \sum_{k = 0}^n Cos(k) + \sum_{k = 0}^n i*Sin(k) &s=2 $

$latex C(n) + i*S(n) = \sum_{k = 0}^n (Cos(k) + i*Sin(k)) &s=2 $

That last step utilized the traditional Euler identity, $latex e^{i*\theta} = Cos(\theta) + i*Sin(\theta) &s=2 $.

It is a property of exponentiation, though, that $latex x^{a*b} = {(x^{a})}^b $. As such, we can reduce the summation to its final form,

$latex C(n) + i*S(n) = \sum_{k = 0}^n (e^{i})^k &s=2 $

This is very interesting to me, because, for an arbitrary x, finite power sums are well understood. We know, as a matter of fact, and I encourage you, reader, to verify this, that

$latex 1 + x + x^2 + ... + x^n = \frac{x^{n+1} - 1}{x-1} &s=2 $

We can use that formula to reduce our summation to the form

$latex C(n) + i*S(n) = \frac{(e^{i})^{n+1} - 1}{e^{i}-1} &s=2 $

Applying Euler again, and the typical exponentiation rules again, notice

$latex (e^{i})^{n+1} = e^{ (n+1)*i } = Cos(n+1) + i*Sin(n+1) &s=2 $

$latex e^i = Cos(1) + i*Sin(1) &s=2 $

Therefore,

We are very close. At this point, what we would like is to be able to break the formula into real and imaginary parts. In that way, we could solve for C(n) and S(n) explicitly. To do so, we first need to eliminate the imaginary part in the denominator. Unfortunately at this point, there is no convenient way to write the algebra. So I will leave that as an exercise to the reader, except to say, consider multiplying the numerator and the denominator by $latex Cos(1)-1 - i*Sin(1) $.

Separating the resulting expression into real and imaginary parts, we find

Thus, those are our summation formulae! Of course, they're not very neat, and can be reduced somewhat, applying the usual trig addition formula, Cos(a+b) = Cos(a)Cos(b) - Sin(a)Sin(b), and Sin(a+b) = Sin(a)Cos(b) + Sin(b)Cos(a). Doing so, we can reduce these to the following form,
