Get Out of DeLand

To view the version that ran in Stetson University's The Reporter click HERE

Get Out of DeLand: Mosh The Fat Off Of Your Ass.
A guide for new concertgoers

By: Paul G. Atkinson IV

Step One: Know Where To Go.
Yes, contrary to popular belief, you should seek out a good venue before you seek out a good band. The thing is, there are many more good bands then there are good places to see those bands. If you attempt to scour every website of every band on your iPod for upcoming tour dates, one of two things will happen. You will either go insane or quickly give up.

As far as DeLand goes, local music pops in and out of Divinci’s quite often. Sometimes you can get lucky enough to catch some up-and-comers like Band Marino, who bring an original mix of sound to your ears while also having this great thing called ‘stage presence.’ Most of the time, though, you’ll simply end up witnessing the “entertainment” of a bro or two with an acoustic guitar and a repertoire of bad covers. This is why I usually end up in Orlando.

Orlando provides a wide variety of live music venues, from small clubs to bigger concert halls. For clubs, your best bet is to hit up The Social (http://www.thesocial.org/contact.cfm/) or Back Booth (http://www.backbooth.com/). Occasionally Club Firestone (http://www.myspace.com/clubatfirestone) has live music too, but more often than not you’ll want to go there for a DJ. Each website will provide a list of upcoming bands, show prices, and start times.

There are definitely some advantages to giving these smaller venues a chance. For starters, they are cheap. Tickets range from as low as $8 to no more than $15, with most shows being around $12. It’s also rare to see these small concerts sell out; waiting to buy tickets at the door is almost never an issue.

Another advantage: the intimate experience. If you want to be right up against the stage, stand face to face with the lead vocalist, feel sweat dripping down on you as the microphone gets thrust into the audience for a little fan sing-a-along action, no one is going to stop you. There are no stage barriers. There are no assigned seats; in fact, most of the time there are no seats anywhere except at the bar. This lets you get close for the bands you know and gives you the ability to flee to the back when some horrible Japanese pogo-pop band takes the stage (which, thank God, has happened only once).

For bigger venues you have the House of Blues at Downtown Disney (http://www.hob.com/venues/clubvenues/orlando/) and Hardrock Live at Universal Studios (http://www.hardrock.com/LIVE2/live.asp). Neither venue is by any means a giant arena, but each one can pack in at least four times as many people as the small clubs. They both have open seating as well, though it can get harder to squeeze your way to the front with the bigger crowds. At HOB you can try crowd surfing to swim through the seas of people, but such acts are banned from Hardrock.

Tickets usually range from$20 to $50, with $35 generally being the standard after Ticketmaster fees. The good news is that for the price of admission, you get to see bands you’ve actually heard of.

Step Two: Know The Area.
To end up at a concert in Orlando, one only needs to take a 40-minute drive down I-4. Mapquest generally does the trick, but if you have a better sense of direction than a jellyfish you can probably find your way around (I use a GPS because I could easily get lost just wandering Stetson’s campus).

Backbooth and the Social are about a block away from each other and have at least two parking garages within 100 yards. If the show is early sometimes the garages are free of charge, but for later start times I’ve never had to pay more than five bucks to park. Don’t get scammed into leaving your car at the seemingly convenient parking lot right next to Backbooth, because there is no re-entry to the venue if you leave, and the parking meters don’t take enough quarters to last an entire concert. Parking tickets are at least $15 depending on how long the expiration has gone.

House of Blues is not far from Disney Quest and the sprawling parking lots that surround downtown Disney, so parking is free and easy. Similarly, Hardrock Live shares the same parking complex as Universal and has the same fees. Hardrock's parking is usually free by the time most concerts start.

Also, all of the venues have semi-overpriced food within walking distance for when you come out of a show starving.

Step Three: Know Who To See.
Upcoming events:
-Aug. 28, Kevin Devine @ The Social
-Sept. 4, Anthony Green, Good Old War, Person L @ The Social
-Sept. 12, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Finch, FFTL, Our Last Night @ HOB

So, let's spin kick our ways to better bodies, stage dive our way to awesome abs. Let's windmill our way to buffer biceps and mosh the fat out of our ass.
-The Wonder Years, “Let’s Moshercise!!!”

Recently I shot new music sensation Forever the Sickest Kids for their first cover with AP Magazine

Recently I shot new music sensation Forever the Sickest Kids for their first cover with AP Magazine. We've kept this a big secret, along with a few other secrets coming up in the next few months..... Now that the issue's release is only weeks away, and the cover shot has been released by AP's myspace team, I can finally put up some behind the scenes fun with the boys.

(bottom row: kent, danee/groomer, marc. second row: austin, me, alisha/hair, dominiga/stylist. top row: caleb, kyle, jonathan)

FTSK consists of Jonathan, Kent, Marc, Kyle, Austin and Caleb. They are Texas natives, and probably one of the sweetest groups of guys you could meet. Their music is carefree pop rock n'roll with catchy rhythms and beats that you can't help but dance and sing along with. Known for having the wildest and loudest crowds on this summers Warped Tour, there's a reason, aside from their killer tunes, these guys have such a following....there hearts are pure gold! Plus they all have incredible senses of humor and kept us laughing all day, and is it any reason the girls pass out when they enter the room? These boys are gorgeous!!!!

FTSK loves their fans with all their hearts, they are grateful for where they are, they are genuine & sweet with a wild edge. I totally love these guys and was amazed by their diligence to share the spotlight in the photos (although lets be real, Kyle is a lover of the limelight and being in front of the lens)

AP Magazine, one of the best magazines in the universe, listened to the fans on this one, and it was the enormous outcry of support that got FTSK the cover.

The magazine comes out on October 7th. I have not seen which photos are appearing inside yet. More photos to come of FTSK in October.

To get the official blog of the OSU Chapter of the Music and Industry Student Association started, we are writing about concerts we attended over the summer.

I headed down to Cincinnati on July 30 for the Vans Warped Tour, the annual parade of rock, punk, emo, screamo, and even some hip-hop acts. It was my first time going, so I was overwhelmed with the 6 stages of non-stop music, hundreds of merch tents, and thousands of people. I watched great performances by Reel Big Fish, Relient K, and Forever the Sickest Kids to name a few.

Since Forever the Sickest Kids was one of the Universal college rep priority artists, I introduced myself to their tour manager after the show. He took me to hang out with the band backstage and then, to my surprise, back to their tour bus! I stayed for about half an hour listening to the guys torture their merch booth worker over walkie-talkies (by being fashionably late for their signing while he felt the pressure of a huge line of fans). Their energetic personalities really show through in their music, a very solid mix of rock and electronica featuring multiple vocalists.

My first Warped Tour was an amazing experience and now I want to hear about YOUR stories. Huge music festivals, local bands, or that guy on the subway playing trumpet - what music did you enjoy this summer?

Forever The Sickest Kids + Kill The Arcade + All Forgotten [170908]
There are screaming girls akimbo

Forever The Sickest Kids + Kill The Arcade + All Forgotten [170908]

There are screaming girls akimbo in the Barfly tonight, with every other person decked in a FTSK t-shirt. The first band of the evening is All Forgotten, a screamo band from Surrey. While tracks such as At A Guess I'm Second Best are executed competently, I've been feeling a bit jaded with the influx of bands into the genre lately. There's nothing wrong with tonight's opening act, per se, it's just that there are a bunch of bands doing the same thing right now and some are doing it notably better. When this latest fad bubble bursts, we'll be picking through the rubble of bands like All Forgotten. On a less cynical note, there was no real movement at this stage but a plethora of enthusiastic cheers.

After a laborious soundcheck Kill The Arcade enter rather dramatically with Bon Voyage, and are greeted with more shrieks/cheers from the crowd. They play an old song to a more muted response, but momentum picks back up again despite a hiccup in levels that is quickly resolved. They are clearly into the performance and have an edge over the previous band, displaying the potential for a greater breadth of genre than pop-punk that will be interesting to pick up a few months down the line.

Texas band Forever The Sickest Kids enter to a cacophony of shrieks and launch into their pure American power-pop with My Worst Nightmare. The setlist is mostly comprised of tracks from their recently-released CD, Underdog Alma Mater. Vocalist Jonathan Cook instructs the until-now largely apathetic crowd to jump - and they do. He then tells them to go crazy, but is met with somewhat less success. Still it's something and, at one point, there is even a mini-pit going.

The band all bring a great level of energy to the stage, particularly bassist Austin Bello, and their tracks are less saccharine live than on the CD, a little heavier. At one point Cook climbs into the crowd, much to the chagrin of the security, and greedy hands reach out to support him. Forever The Sickest Kids may not be reinventing the wheel but they run well enough for an encore, and even the girls are screamed-out by the end of the night.

Setlist:

My Worst Nightmare

Whoa Oh! (Me Vs. Everyone)

August 19th, 2008
My partner in crime, Ricky, and I went to the show of shows on Tuesday night here

August 19th, 2008

My partner in crime, Ricky, and I went to the show of shows on Tuesday night here in Tucson, at The Rock. Getting to the show was like a comedy of errors, absolutely the best kind of preface to a most amazing evening. Nothing that runs smoothly has a very exciting conclusion, this being the pinnacle example of that. We both had to be up pretty early that day, it being the day we were supposed to get our new register system installed at the Eagle. Nothing goes without a hitch there either and to both of our dismay the new registers didn't happen, so the day was long and dragged because it was just another day at work with nothing to distract us and take up the time before we went to the show we were looking forward to for so long.

Finally!-- we are off, I agreed to drive because Ricky's usually the chafferer for everyone else/I never get to drive with Mike, I like driving, I feel cool, that's really the only reason. I go to pick him up at his house, and let's just say he literally lives in the desert almost up a mountain. Seriously. Now, historically there are three things I do very badly: math, gymnastics, and reading and understanding directions and maps. I mean there are probably a ton of crap I do badly, but those are the top three. And I don't mean like pummel horse or balance beam gymnastics, I just mean I'm not actively dexterous or flexible. Where the hell am I going with this... my point exactly! It should take 15 minutes from my house to Ricky's house but since I got lost twice, er, three times, it took almost triple the time (but I think I only admitted getting lost twice, and only now am spilling my beans, oh well...) I finally get Ricky and we're off! Hooray!

Driving, tra la la... OMG I FORGOT THE TICKETS!!! In a panic, I mean panic!-- I u-turned like nobody's business and had to backtrack to my house to get them. Tucson isn't very big but no matter where you need to get to it'll take an exuberant and almost unnecessary amount of time to get there. But not the trek home and back, I must have been on the wings of concert angels because I think round trip for the retrieval took about ten minutes when it should really have taken about a half an hour. So that was the start of our adventure...

We get to the place, and with a little help from his GPS phone thingy we get almost lost in a little web of turn here for your destination, no here, no now go left, go right, go straight up a camel's ass... GPS is hilarious when it can't pinpoint your location exactly, it just knows that you are there but it wants to get you right on top of the place. We park, I scratch my hubcap, don't care and we get out. We're walking up to the place and we run into AE Jon who is playing the show with his band Tonight We Have Rhythm, he's nervous, smoking and shaking, understandable, playing in your town with two very amazing bands. We get in line and it is just an array of bubble gum, eye liner, long and big hair, stripes and neons, girl jeans on boys, and fun fun fun. Surprisingly I wasn't the oldest person there and also of note, there were normal looking kids there too. I don't know why that surprised me because we were normal looking so why wouldn't there be other "normal" looking people.

We get inside and it is crazy small, for those of you who grew up clubbing around Manchester it was like The Web only without that wacky seating arrangement, so it was just stage and floor. It was going to be sardine city. Oh, and it is about 100 degrees outside and that made it about Burning Hell degrees inside. But I loved the place, it was seedy and dirty and awesome, exactly how it should be. Now we wait. Ricky met up with a ton of people he was really good friends with in high school, good, now we have our own crowd. You could tell this crowd was young and rough and ready to bring the pain. No seats, only sweaty bodies all clamoring to get as close to the stage as possible.

The first band comes on, the front man is obnoxious and obviously coked up and if he wasn't, well then he needs some serious attention. They were crappy but some people dug it so who am I to judge really. Their set was way too long though and then we had to wait again. My friend's band came on and they did their thing and they were awesome! It's a really cool thing to see someone you know, someone who you see in everyday situations totally rock out on stage and really be able to show what they love to do. It was great, and their sound is right up my alley, so I know there are good things to come from this band. Keep a look out!

Mayday Parade are next and they were super great! At this point the crowd is going crazy. Slamming up into me and everyone else. And you know there was that girl and that guy. Those people who have total disregard for anyone else and just completely bust out and not care if you get a fist in the face or an arm to the gut; as if that can be called dancing. I think it was at that point that Ricky and I decided that if you can't beat 'em (and we did literally beat those two) then you might as well join 'em. So we did, we danced, we sweat and we slammed back! It was hilarious and awesome and such a rush. I've always wanted to do that and not care how much it would hurt or how I would look, and I'm so glad I did. That set was great but we were really there for the next band.

Forever The Sickest Kids were incredible! I was so taken at how comfortable and happy they were to be on stage. I've never seen a band like this play, they were all ecstatic to be there and really belted out everything they had. That's a show. They were animated and energetic and that is what moved the crowd, or at least that is what moved me. I had to go to those energy reserves that I didn't even know I had to keep up, but you know what I did. A year ago I never would have been able to do that, so it was such a personal triumph for me. I was totally taken away and forgot who I was, where I was and what was going on in my life and just left it out there the way the music did. It rocked. That's what it did.

It was one of those nights, the best kind. Ricky and I left the place and our bodies were all wiggly and tired. We couldn't hear until late the next day, and I think I haven't yet caught up on my sleep from that night. That's the rock and roll lifestyle I guess :) (I am so hardcore... not really.)

Okay, here's the ultimate biggie of the night!!! Ricky caught a drum stick from FTSK and he gave it to me!!! How wicked awesome is that!

Here my friends is the lineup for the Warped Tour @ The Sleeptrain Amphitheater / Wheatland, CA.

3OH!3, Against Me!, Aggrolites, Alesana, All Time Low, Anberlin, Angels and Airwaves, Beat Union, Bring Me the Horizon, Broadway Calls, Charlotte Sometimes, The Classic Crime, Cobra Starship, Confide, Danger Radio, The Devil Wears Prada, Dr. Manhattan, Evergreen Terrace, Everytime I Die, Family Force 5, Forever The Sickest Kids, Four Year Strong, GBH, Greeley Estates, Gym Class Heroes, HorrorPops, Katy Perry, Ludo, Mayday Parade, MC Chris, Norma Jean, Oreska, Pierce the Veil, Protest The Hero, Reel Big Fish, Relient K, Rise Against, Say Anything, Set Your Goals, Shwayze, Sky Eats Airplane, Story of the Year, Street Dogs, The Academy Is . . .
, The Audition, The Briggs, The Bronx, The Color Fred, The Fabulous Rudies, The Human Abstract, The Lordz, The Maine, The Saint Alvia Cartel, The Vandals, We The Kings
also not listed on the lineup untill showtime was sacramento band Aurorah....

so there you have 57 bands on 9 stages. other than 1 no show (katie Perry) and a couple of cancellations it went off without a hitch.! thousands of area kids of all ages decended on the venue to run back and forth between the 9 stages to catch they're favorite bands.
this event was an 11 hour affair filled with music and mayhem ranging from metal to even a hip hop band of sorts. out in the 100+ temps for most of the day and almost no shade to escape the sun it was quite an interesting day with fans frenzied at times from drinking alcohol and heat exsaustion.
rock-med rolled 9 ambulances with situations running from heat stroke to one guy who cmpletely dismantleing his left elbo in a mosh pit. (welcome to Warped Tour Moshing)
so all in all it was a great day and i must say of all the bands i was able to catch, my favorites were Ludo... and Amberlin....

i love to work the Warped tour because i get to see a lot of my late sons friends and i also love the chaotic atmosphere. its not for everyone but for me? it works......

till next time........... keep rockin!

Id like to start this with a definition:
Gear(n): What musicians refer to when describing their guitars/recording equipment/drums/amps etc. Used in a sentence: "I got some wicked sweet gear"

Okay...now that you know what im refering to..we can get onto business. Im big on music...if your my friend, you know it..if your my relative, you know it...but im even bigger on the technical things of music. The amps, the guitars, the mixers...so with this, i hope to draw in a different crowd of people...musicians with similar interests.

In these segments, I will show off a peice of equipment ive been really dying to have/try out or both. It may also not be directly musical gear...maybe something i found thats cool relating to music. However, onto the first post in this new section:

The Orange Tiny Terror 1x12 Combo Tube Guitar Amp:

Whats that you ask? That little orange box? Well ill tell you..that orange box maybe have some of the best guitar tones ever. For those who aren't amp savvy, orange amps are responsible for many many tones you here today in new age rock bands...half the band i like use them(Jimmy Eat World, Mae, The Mars Volta, Forever the Sickest Kids..etc). This is a bit of a "dummed down" version of their bigger amps. It seems small, but another version of this amp(a head version) has gotten loads of praise. It can give you a lot of tones..from blues to metal...and gives you some rich dark tone.

The amp only has 3 controls(Volume, Gain, Tone), and 2 switches(7 Watt/5 Watt, On/Off switch). It is 15 watts, and runs through a single 12inch speaker(hence the 1x12). It is an all tube amp(those who dont know what that means...it means simply it runs on tubes. Remember tvs from way back when..known as tube tvs? similar deal...tubes are said to give amps richer/fuller/smoother sound...overall better. They are mostly prefered in the music industry by musicians. However, this is just a generel statement).

So now that the basic specifications are out of the way, the reason i want this amp is pretty simple: I want the tones that some of my favorite bands have. This is very appealing because it has tones of all famous bands, for a cheaper price than most other tube amps. Listening to the head version of this amp(an amp head is the amp but without a speaker...it is the power section and all the technical part of the amp..but you need to hook it up to a speaker)it shows all the great things this amp can do. I hope I can go to some place that has orange amps, and play one of these things when they come out...cause god, i want to get that Hey Brittney guitar tone.

At just 17 years of age, Australian native; Edgil Pagaduan is not only a self taught and self accomplished Illustrator and Graphic Designer, but is also in many ways a heroic inspiration to youth. Although admittedly Edgil confesses to not being any different from most other teenagers his own age; obsessed with girls, fashion and music etc, there is another side to the self proclaimed "shy" kid that goes unnoticed by day. One that harbors within his darkly creative soul. Only to be seen breaking through the surface in a brain storm of mayhem with an explosive anatomy of colour. Being of Asian heritage, shades of Edgil's Manga forefathers can undoubtedly be seen in his work. But the point that really needs to be stressed is that Edgil hasn't had any torch passed down to him, from one generation to the next. He's ignited a new flame for his own.

Ed took some time out to give an exclusive interview to The 405. Enjoy.

When did you first realize that illustrating could become a full time career for yourself?

I first started realizing that illustrating could be my full time career around 2 years ago, when a local band called knife to a gunfight asked me for a design, i never knew i would get where i am today.

Where or from whom, do your ideas and inspirations for designs derive from?

Im definitely inspired by a number of artists style-wise, for example im very much influenced by chad lenjer, dan mumford and jimiyo, but with all my ideas and such, they basically pop in my head out of nowhere or it comes from my best friend kivins head, he has some of the most insane ideas in that redhaired head of his its amazing, alot of my more unique and weird pieces were actually some ideas hes thrown at me.

You have a really unique style of drawing with a great deal of detail. Has this always been the case or has your style been influenced? Anime etc

Ive only been drawing in this style for 1 year or so, before that i was a diehard designer with no linework in my designs whatsoever, but then i came around the likes of chad lenjer and dan mumford and was really inspired to try out the illustration style, and since then, i have been doing what i have been doing.

What have you been listening to a lot of recently on your iPod?

Lately is has been a mix, ive always been a soft kind of guy, so if oyu ever take the earphones out of my ears its probably city and colour, but lately ive been listening to alot of diverse stuff from all different genres, some bands ive been listening to are liferuiner, endwell, furious styles, fallout boy, boys like girls and missy higgins.

What's been your biggest achievement this far?

I reckon it would have to be getting to where i am now, i never expected to get where i am, but i sure am grateful.

You've also done some really awesome and original tattoo designs. Have you ever thought about swapping pen and paper for ink and needle?

All the time all the time, i once actually dropped designing and did tattoo flashes for so long, but i got really bored of the whole tattoo style, dont get me wrong i love it, but it gets really repetitive, but i think in about a few months or so, ill be doing alot more tattoo work with a mix of my current style of illustrations which i hope will turn out really well.

Have you ever considered doing your own comic book or working as a comic book illustrator?

To be honest, i would love to do a comic book, but i have a MASSIVE problem drawing the same thing twice haha, so i dont think i will be anytime in the future, though i probably will do some comic book covers.

You've done work for the likes of The Plain White T's, Senses Fail and All American Rejects, but If you could design for any band(or artists or for that matter any thing that would need designing for) past or present, who/what would it be and why?

It would definitely have to be city and colour, i would do a absolutely nutter design for him, it would be a kid in a chicken suit, flying around a city dropping massive buckets of rainbow paint on the buildings, city and colour would definitely have to be my favourite artist/band.

What is the key to keeping your work fresh and not getting mentally/physically burnt out with what you do?

Friends, just taking a break and going out with friends does so much, ive been burnt out and exhausted way too many times and i still am constantly, so when i am i call up a group of friends and we all go hang out and have a good old skate.

Finally, where do you see yourself 5 years from now, in regards to your work, new projects and any other personal aspirations you have in life.

In 5 years? probably still doing what im doing now, if not that then probably a tattoo artist.

Yo yo yo everybody! Been out of touch for the past three days or so. My apologies. But if Walt Disney World wants to charge people $10 a day for internet, I say they're barking.

Parker and I are in Florida, doing a bit of an amusement park tour. Hmmm... What to say about it. Well, probably not much. I don't think I can blog on it all at once. But our overall impression is that it is very much hyped and slightly overrated. Sorry to burst everyone's bubble. WDW has a lot of good points but it just doesn't stand up to the weight of expectations. Anyway. Update.

So, we spent that second day in New York since I last posted wandering around the Met in the morning. Very good, very cool, very big and also, very, very, very confusing layout. That place is like a rabbit warren. There are no straight lines to everything. You go into one exhibit and you have to walk all the way back to the entrance in order to make your way to another exhibit. But anyway, nitpicking aside. Here are some pics.

The first exhibit we went to was called Superheroes, Fashion and Fantasy and it was awesome! They don't allow photography in any of the special exhibits so I don't have anything to show you except this pic I got off the internet. Also, here is a New York Times review of it just to titillate. Basically it was about how superheroes and comic books reflect society and culture and how many of the motifs involved in superhero costumes have been coopted by famous fashion designers of the world. Very cool. I thought the fashion items were very way out but aren't those runway items always that way? But - but! We did get to see the original superhero costumes from the movies

Batman's new costume from The Dark Knight Returns

Catwoman's costume from Batman Returns

The second (silver) Iron Man costume from Iron Man

Spiderman and Venom's costumes from Spiderman 3

Superman's costume from one of the original Superman movies

Tres cool! Sameer and I really dug it. Also, the text and stuff they used to explain the links between the various costumes and fashion items were very much related to the issues discussed in one of the seminars we attended at the Comic Con. Yes, we are such geeks.

Other exhibits we liked were:

an exhibit on armour and weapons through the ages

After that we stopped for lunch and then puttered around window shopping and basically killing time until we had to go in for the Conan O' Brien show.

Oh, I may have forgotten to mention that we got tickets for that eventually. Cool show. Conan is soooo funny. The guests were Randy Jackman from American Idols and America's Best Dance Crew, some chick from the Prestige and a new stage play and a band that I'd never heard of but really quite liked called Forever the Sickest Kids. Later that evening we bumped into the drummer from Forever the Sickest kids in Times Square and that was an odd co-incidence. I probably wouldn't have recognized him if it wasn't for the crazy hair which all the guys in the band seem to have. But crazy hair aside, they were pretty good, and are worth a listen.

Funny incident at the beginning of the show before Conan did his intro -- one of the members of the house band (The Max Weinberg 7) kept blowing on his trumpet during the intro and would not stop. Everyone started scratching their heads after one minute but after three the producers and such started throwing hissy fits. There was a general feeling of irritation among the crew after that I think. Oddest thing about being at the Conan O'Brien show is realizing exactly how many people are on the crew, helping to shoot the show -- 17 during one count, and on that tiny stage! You would never know.

Oh, and you know how they always tell you that it's cold in the studio when they shoot the show? Totally untrue. I was there in a thin t-shirt and cotton pants and I was just fine - me, the Woman of Many Layers.

Anyhoo. After that we puttered around some more and then we hooked up with Sameer's friends from Koeberg, Natalie and Martin. They are in the States doing a short course at MIT and came to New York for the weekend. So we hooked up and had dinner together, which was great because we hadn't seen each other in months and months and we got to catch up with some fellow South Africans and reminisce about things we miss from Cape Town, compare notes on things we like about the US, and assimilate the latest office gossip from Koeberg. We ended up staying in the city 'til quite late but made our train comfortably and, after packing, got to bed close to 1am which gave us about four hours of sleep before we had to do the whole taxi/train/plane/bus scenario for the next leg of our trip. It actually went a lot better than we thought it would and though we were a bit bleary eyed the next morning, we were both glad that we'd got to spend the evening with some friends from home.

Forever the Sickest Kids is an... emo? I guess that fits best--band from Texas. They have 2 EPs released--only one of which made it to iTunes, and a full CD.

Of the 14 songs on the iTunes version of their debut CD (Underdog Alma Mater), 6 are found (in various incarnations) on their EPs. So, I'll review ALL of the tracks they've ever released, and compare different versions ;) enjoy. I'll be going by the track-listing of Underdog Alma Mater's iTunes version, and then picking up the three songs I can find that aren't on their CD.

Track #1 - "Whoa Oh! (Me Vs Everyone)" - (Underdog Alma Mater) 8.5/10

This is the band's first single, and it's very catchy. From the lyric gimmicks I live for ("I've got friends in highly low places") to an amazingly catchy hook ("whoa oh whoa-whoa oh, why do I put myself in these situations?") that is impossible not to smile along to, this is definitely worth being the first single... if I really wanted bands to end up on the radio... which I don't, much. Hearing this at the mall, and on the radio (not actually, it lost its battle against some rap song, which I didn't mind so much) kinda made me not like it as much as I should, after all, it is an amazing song. Great beginning to the CD.

Track #2 - "Hey Brittany" - (The Sickest Warped Tour EP, Underdog Alma Mater) EP: 6/10, CD: 8/10

This is the first song the band ever recorded, apparently. One of the band members purchased a song feature on Pure Volume before they had really done anything as a band, much less record a song. So they recorded this one. And it was a major hit. (Or so say the websites I've looked at... I didn't hear about this band until a few months before their CD came out. Anyways...) The intro of the song immediately changes the tone from Whoa Oh! - the song is less guitar driven, and "lowers down" the pace a little, which is definitely a good thing. Probably the most second most catchy song on the CD. The EP version of the song sounds much like the CD version, a synth opening gradually leading into the guitar. The EP version is rougher, although the opening is better in some way... They changed a few of the lyrics. Basically, this song's about "Brittney" a girl one of the band members likes (I think?), but she's not over her earlier boyfriend. I think. Parts of the lyrics don't fit with the rest (this kind of happens with a lot of their songs, actually.) I must say that I like the CD version better--more polished and smooth, and the lyric change was a good idea.

Track #3 - "My Worst Nightmare" (Underdog Alma Mater) 10/10

The first song I hadn't heard of before, I was kind of anxious when I first listened to this. I shouldn't have been. The song begins with a synth opening that sounds a little like Hey Brittney's opening, but the song is very different. I love a good lyric twist, and I got one: "I never did what you said that I did when I was gone (You did what you said that I did when I was gone)." Amazing. An all around AMAZING song.

Track #4 - "Believe Me, I'm Lying" (The Sickest Warped Tour EP; Television Off, Party On; Underdog Alma Mater) SWT: 7/10, TO,PO: 8/10 CD: 9/10

The first track on the first EP I heard by FTSK, this is a pretty amazing song. On The Sickest Warped Tour EP, the song is decidedly rough, but it's still amazingly similar to the other two versions. On Television Off, Party On, the song comes in acoustic, and eventually builds to a dance-y song. On Underdog Alma Mater, the song comes in with a little electronic, but keeps true to TO,PO's precedent. If anything, the CD version's actually better, as they fix the little bugs in their vocal levels that plague their EPs (the song starts off "...stand their while I stab you in the back (with the words) I never never never should have taken this so far. On the EP, you can't hear "(with the words)", the CD brings out the words that were there all along, but you couldn't hear them--and I originally hated the album version because of this: "They added too many extra words!!" Overall, the EP versions are great, but the album one rocks the hardest. I must say I LOVE the little xylophone tinkle that leads from soft chorus to their "shout" chorus.

Track #5 - "The Way She Moves" - (Underdog Alma Mater) 7/10

This song starts off fairly disappointing, the singer is just slightly too whiny, and for the first chorus, I remained unimpressed. Not that it was bad, it was just mediocre. The little DJ scratching tided me over for awhile. Then you get to a slowdown. "It's a terrible thing (terrible thing)" which was a relief, and the guitar bit brought me back up a little. (Wow, I didn't know it took them SO LONG to get to the best part of the song...). But the only reason I like this song is the last few choruses' filtered "away-oh-oh".

Track #6 - "She's A Lady" - (The SWT EP; Television Off, Party On; UAM) SWT: 5/10 TO,PO: 7/10.

This song is probably the least messed with among all their versions. Although it gets progressively tighter and cleaner as you go from The Sickest Warped Tour to Television Off, Party On to the CD. Probably the song I was least impressed with when I first heard them. It's an okay song... but some of it grates, I don't know why. Perhaps because of the lyrics "Take off your shoes, come in the room, and how can we fight when I'm too busy loving you". I didn't need or ask for that. Nor the repetition of "I'm too busy loving you". Gaah. Although, the vocals are almost better on TO,PO than on UAM. Odd.

Track #7 - "Uh Huh" - (Underdog Alma Mater) 5/10

I think of this as the middle of the CD (and well, it is... middle of 14 is 7 after all). Basically, once you've passed this song, you can count yourself as liking Forever the Sickest Kids. This song has some good parts, true: "If I would have known what you were thinking/would have ran for the hills, and then/would have stayed located 'till you're over it". Very nice lyric. But the chorus confuses me: "Uh huh, uh huh, we're doing it." What are they doing? Oh well.

Track #8 - "Phone Call" (Underdog Alma Mater) 6/10

Along with Uh Huh, this is also one of the "middle" tracks. You could call them filler. Although, this is better, as far as filler goes. "All I, All I really wanted was a good job" needs to be heard. Probably the best singing in the whole CD on that line. As the song finishes, bits from the beginning, the end, and the chorus come in, and I like that bit. Overall, though, it's not amazing, just good.

Track #9 - "Breakdown" - (The Sickest Warped Tour EP; Television Off, Party On; Underdog Alma Mater) SWT: 5/10 TO,PO: 9/10 CD: 9/10

This is by far my favorite song of theirs. The Sickest Warped Tour EP wrecks it. The piano was a nice touch, though... but they wrecked the transition out of it. Oh well. Television Off, Party On nails this song. It's immediately captivating--you go "Wow. What was that song?" The CD version is pretty cool too, in fact, it's almost better. Everything's tighter, and it opens with an amazing filtered bit, and then goes into the song. It ends like that too, but the ending bugs me--the beat feels off. The only thing I have against the CD version is the fact that they toned down the horn bit. They left it enough so you could tell it was their if you'd heard their other versions, but it wasn't enough (for me, anyway).

Track #10 - "That For Me" - (Underdog Alma Mater) 6.5/10

Hmm... because I mixed myself up, I listened to Coffee Break before this. And I must say, going back to A) the CD, and B) Electric Guitar is definitely refreshing. I like this song much better when it's after Coffee Break. Hmm... I could say that of Catastrophe (which is after Coffee Break). This is a pretty good song. The least effects in it of the whole CD. Wow. I like this song so much better after Coffee Break. Anyhoo... I like the lines "But Mother I know you know I'm having a good time/I'm sleeping so little, but I'm living the good life/No need to worry about a place to lay my head down, no need to worry about a place to sleep". The chorus is rather ambiguous, though: it could either go "I need somebody to rely on/and you weren't that for me and you'll never be that for me" or "I need somebody to rely on/and you were that for me and you'll never be bad for me". It works both ways, but it bugs me. Too much instrumental, not enough vocals? Who knows. Maybe it goes for both, since he seems to be singing to almost two different people.

Track #11 - "Coffee Break" (The Sickest Warped Tour EP, Underdog Mater) EP: 7/10 CD: 4/10

I'm almost scared to hit play on the EP version of this song. So I'm just gonna review it a bit before I hit play (I figure I ought to listen to all the versions of a song while I'm reviewing it, so I'm listening to the CD's Breakdown while I write this *later* - Oops! I skipped "That For Me" haha.). So. Coffee Break is the slowest song on the CD. It's okay, when you're feeling in a pitiable mood. If not, avoid this song. I like the "I guess this is growing up" and the way that he starts "I'm two cups into my coffee break..." and ends "Now I'm done with my coffee break, I'm turning on my phone now that I've grown up." But between then, it's too whiny. Now to listen to the actual song. I actually like the opening--the acoustic guitar is good. The tuning on the singers... not so much. But apart from that, the song is better on the EP. It's much less whiny. And it's shorter. always a plus. I'm not even going to listen to the original Coffee Break.

Track #12 - "Catastrophe" - (Underdog Alma Mater) 10/10

I love the opening of this song: "wake up, you're a drama queen/carry on like you're supposed to be..." and it continues like that, making it my favorite new song. The only thing I don't like about this song is how far back it is--it's the last non-bonus song on the CD! "How long have you been in your bedroom? It's been three days straight with your sheets and the pillow". I love this song. Maybe because it's after Coffee Break. But it's an amazing song anyways.

Track #13 - "Indiana" - (Underdog Alma Mater) 3/10

This is the first bonus track on the iTunes version of Underdog Alma Mater. It's probably my least favorite song on the CD. Not for a specific reason--it's just boring, and it makes no sense. For one, it reuses a phrase! "We're/we were two weeks in..." also appears in Uh Huh, which coincidentally happens to be another non-favorite. One thing to be said about it, though--I do like the instrumental at the beginning. But it's too long, and it doesn't accomplish anything. I'd rather they have included this "Give and Take (Remix)" or "Hurricane Haley". Supposedly the last one is really good. I wouldn't know, not having purchased my CD at Best Buy.

Track #14 - "Becky Starz (Remix)" - (Underdog Alma Mater) 10/10

Becky Starz was probably my least favorite song on Television Off, Party On. At least, at first. I like it better now (as you'll see). Instead of just rerecord the song, they remixed it, to amazing effect. Although this song will end up really confusing if you haven't heard the original, it sounds amazingly pretty. Featuring plenty of repeated vocals, a cool synth background that makes me think of old school video game music, although it definitely is not, and some piano. Impressively pretty.

Track #15 (EP Only) - "Becky Starz" - (Television Off, Party On) 10/10

Becky Starz originally didn't impress me much. Listening to it again, it is one of the most impressive songs on the EP. Pretty much, the singer is flirting with somebody else's girlfriend. And he gets beaten up for it. And amazingly, the vocals are slightly too quiet, but still amazing. Wow. I like this song so much better post remix. Strange.

Track #16 (EP Only) - "I Don't Know About You, But I Came To Dance" - (Television Off, Party On) 10/10

I love this song, too. Perhaps because it's not on the CD. I don't know. But it is also produced slightly better than the rest of the EP. "You've got my head spinning, heart beating out of my chest/I'm a sucker for lovers, for lovers". I love that line. I'm slightly disappointed that it wasn't included on the CD. But I'm even more disappointed that iTunes took the EP off of their story after the CD was released. Very annoying.

Track #17 (Other) - "Men In Black (Will Smith Cover)" - (Punk Goes Crunk) 10/10

Forever the Sickest Kids also contributed a song to the next Punk Goes ... compilation. Punk Goes Crunk. Basically, you have "punk" bands (you could label them otherwise, usually) covering rap and hip-hop songs. Some of which I didn't know beforehand. Which I don't mind so much. So, FTSK covered Will Smith's Men In Black. And I think it's amazing.

Track #18 - "Hurricane Haley" - (Underdog Alma Mater (Best Buy)) 8/10

After searching online, I found Hurricane Haley online, and listening to it, I'd have to say I like it a lot. Much better than Indiana. Speaking of, why is it called Indiana? They're not from there, they're from Texas... oh well. This song's pretty cool. Nothing special, but it has a bounce to it.

Track #19 - "Give And Take (Remix)" - (Underdog Alma Mater (Best Buy)) 8/10

Hmm... the quality on the version I'm listening to is definitely not amazing. After searching online, I resorted to YouTube, where I found a chipmunk version--the sample rate is sped up so the song sounds like chipmunks. So I listened to that. And I thought it was interesting. Then I recorded it, and tried to slow it down several ways, before looking up the original track length on Wikipedia. 2:21. So I finally listened to the song in its mostly unchanged entirety. And I like it. Much, much better than Indiana. I wish they'd make these available to buy. Alone. Oh well.

Overall:

Underdog Alma Mater: 9/10

Mostly because it doesn't include all the songs from Television Off, Party On, and for messing a little too much with the original songs, I took off one star. But the CD is still very good.

Television Off, Party On: 10/10

The only thing I could maybe do without on this CD is the roughness of the recording. But I still think all of it is amazing, and should definitely be put back up on iTunes.

The Sickest Warped Tour EP: 3/10

While some of the songs are interesting, the overall album is done too badly for me to want to buy any of it. "Coffee Break" was much better than the original, but I don't really need or want two of them, so I'll pass.

iTunes Bonus Tracks: 5/10

Basically a 50/50 split: an amazing job on Becky Starz, but Indiana's awful.

Best Buy Bonus Tracks: 8/10

Wow. I'm jealous. The only thing, they don't have Becky Starz. That's how I comfort myself.

Men In Black (Punk Goes Crunk): 7.5/10

Amazing song, as an original. As a remake, it does pretty cool too... But it sticks almost exactly to the original, which is kinda boring. But hey, it's a cool song.

So it's definitely that time of year where driving with the windows down and radio up is a must. That means that you gotta have some top quality music to provide a soundtrack to perfect days like today. For anyone out there that is willing to take some suggestions here are two bands that get the job done on days like this:

All Time Low - So Wrong, It's Right

Forever the Sickest Kids - Underdog Alma Mater (download "Hey Brittany" on iTunes and you'll be hooked)

Forever The Sickest Kids
Underdog Alma Matter
In Stores: April 29, 2008

For a band that immediately jumped onto a major label, as well as having a great deal of hype surrounding both their music, and their upcoming release, I expected at least a little bit of effort. Instead, I encountered a pathetic mix of remixed, and remastered old songs. Granted it's the first time any of these songs had major label distribution, regardless, those are the songs with which the band has gained a great deal of their popularity. Everyone has heard them. This album is the epitome of laziness. The few new songs on Underdog Alma Matter, are classic Forever The Sickest Kids. It's a shame there aren't more of them. These are the reason that this band has become so successful, so quickly. This release would have been better suited as a second EP, with only the new songs. As far as I'm concerned, I'll be waiting for a sophmore album before I'm willing to fork out the money to support this band.

well here i am sitting in my kitchen listening to music attempting to write a report for history

well here i am sitting in my kitchen listening to music attempting to write a report for history... its not going too well. i have 1/5 of it done and its 201 in the morning. can you say procrastination? and i dont even have any clue as to why im on here typing it up. i could be using my time more wisely and actually do my work instead of typing up a blog. i got someone to cover my shift today for work because i know how i am. i wont really work on it until about 3-4 and i would have had to be at work at 450. yeah thats early i know.

so i have decided to play around here instead for the moment. i figured out how to change my stuff around and make it prettier. the picture on my header i love that photo. i went to the lake with my best friend and we did photos. it was a truly amazing day. so yeah. i love photography it makes me happy. i love how one photo can capture tons of emotions and literally take my breath away. maybe its just me but its something im truly passionate about. i hope to one day do something with photography in my life but im scared im not good enough. i mean im not anything special. there are tons of people who are billions of times better than me. in the vast sea of artists im just a medeocre person who wants to be good. i doubt i am.

so i decided im meeting him. it will be fun

may 17th im going to a concert and my cousin is helping put it all together so you know what i get to do? thats right! i get to hang out with the bands and chill backstage. who are these bands you ask? well there is infair verona, scenes and sirens, the secret handshake, young and divine, forever the sickest kids, artist vs. poet and quite a few more. but im just super stoked. i mean i get to hang out with these bands and i hope they are as cool as i have imagined.

im lame i need to get back to my report now.

goodbye
