So without a doubt, the &ampersand is my favorite special character. Who doesn't love them? The best part is the variation between fonts. I found this cast iron ampersand from House Industries on a blog dedicated to nothing else but The Ampersand. Have a looksie...

Presenting the 2008 A Piece of History Baseball Box Score Memories #42, Bobby Abreu.

The idea, take a box score of some player's great game, and make a card out of it.  Not a horrible idea in and of itself, but this result looks a lot like the it should be the back of a card.

I wish the scan was clearer, but the addition of the red foil Upper Deck logo and the part around where it says "Box Score Memories" only draws attention to rest of the card being so very dull and unappealing.  Some might be blunt enough to say, "Ugly!"

Besides the previously mentioned red foil, the red color is muted (to resemble something historic?) into that baby-barf salmon color that perfectly doesn't highlight the grey swatch of Yankees jersey.  To their credit, at least it's a game-used swatch and not some other pseudo-swatch.

Bobby's picture is dwarfed by the box score, which is disturbingly off-center and way too high in the white box.  Anytime I have to squint to see who the person on the card is, that's a bad thing.

Worse still, but along the same lines, "Bobby Abreu" is in too-hard-to-read, baby-barf salmon font...that inexplicably runs bottom-to-top on the right side of the card.  Even if his name ran across the bottom in large, black, easy-to-read font, that would not make up for the tiny photograph.

Then, the cherry on top...

The entire premise/purpose of this card is to commemorate the "Fleet-Footed Abreu Swip[ing] Three Bags."

Does anyone else see my biggest issue here?

Making adjustments to settings, and turning various things on or off, is known as "tweaking", and sometimes "optimizing". And being a Geek, I love to tweak my machines until they're running like a Indy 500 car. Today's quick tip will take you all of 45 seconds to do, and it will give you noticeable results.

Tip of the Day: Turn on font smoothing, and turn off special effects.
The settings we're going to tweak are all found on the Appearance tab of your Display Properties: right-click on a blank area of your Desktop and select "Properties"
 
On the "Appearance" tab, click on the "Effects" button.

Here we're going to turn one item on, and three off, by placing or removing checkmarks.
1) Turn on the ClearType font smoothing feature by placing a check in its checkbox, and using the drop-down arrow to set it to ClearType. This will make reading easier, and reduce headache-causing eye strain.
2) Turn off the "bells-and-whistles" special effects that, while 'modern' and 'cool', really only slow things down quite unnecessarily. (aka "waste system resources")
* uncheck "transition effects"
* uncheck "shadows"
* uncheck "show windows contents while dragging"
3) Click OK, and OK again.

That's it. You're done. Easy, right? Right. Should you change your mind someday, undoing these changes is just as easy.. just place a check again. (But I very much doubt you will!)

I'm a little disappointed in that Comic Sans is the hero. Eck.. but maybe thats the joke? They just as well could have made Papyrus the hero..
