Some group of jackasses decided to patch together the oldest remaining bible in existence, the Codex Sinaiticus, digitize the pages and re-assemble them online for everyone to study. How old and cool is this book? The The Codex Sinaiticus Project website lays it all out.

Codex Sinaiticus is one of the most important books in the world. Handwritten well over 1600 years ago, the manuscript contains the Christian Bible in Greek, including the oldest complete copy of the New Testament. Its heavily corrected text is of outstanding importance for the history of the Bible and the manuscript - the oldest substantial book to survive Antiquity - is of supreme importance for the history of the book.

In an industry notorious for its lily-white image, it's fitting that Italian Vogue's "Black Issue" is the hottest thing to hit the newsstands in ages. According to Folio, the demand for the issue featuring all black models is so high that Condé Nast is reprinting the issue—10,000 copies to be exact, polybagged with the tagline “Most Wanted Issue Ever” and “First Reprint” across the front.

Conventional (i.e. racist) wisdom in the magazine industry says that putting a black face on the cover of your magazine means it won't sell well. Apparently for fashion magazines, that also means putting black faces inside, since you rarely see anyone with brown skin within the pages of the major fashion mags (seriously, I challenge you to find more than one or two, if even that). So the fact that people are scrambling to buy this issue, which is in Italian and goes for $16-$20, just goes to show that "conventional wisdom" is a bunch of crap. You listening, Anna Wintour?

According to the BBC News website a 51 year old man, claiming to be an international business man (don't we all) walked into the Folger Library in Washington D.C. and asked them to value the book.  Even more amazingly he left the book with them when they asked!  Additional information from The Times Online reveals that the man claimed to have aquired the book in Cuba, but was arrested at an address in an a totally different Washington, Washington, Tyne & Wear, in the north east of England.

Hmmmm, seeing as the Washington of his arrest is in County Durham which is the same county as Durham University resides in are you a little suspicious as to the honesty of his 'international businessman' "I purchased it in Cuba" alibi???

i cant afford to have it conk out any time soon nor acquire an additional 2TB of storage so i just decided to sort and archive "some" of my old files....from my GIS/RS work--satellite images, gis training modules [finished & unfinished ones], gis tutorials, arcview shapefiles, tax maps...to my hobby etc--photography ebooks, family pics, recent wedding shoots ...then i found some photos...from way back when i was just starting as a wedding photog.

ok, i didnt know ill be a wedding photog back then...all i know is that im trigger happy.

oh yeah...back to archiving files...nu ni nu ni nu...

Just returned from Torino, Italy and I'm proud to announce that SOLOS has picked up the "Premio Nuovi Sguardi" Award at the 23rd Torino GLBT Film Festival.

It was a co-win with Panorama by Loo Hui Phang from France. The other 4 films in the same category are Piao lang chi ge (Drifting Flowers) - Zero Chou, Fora da Lei (Outlaw) - Leonor Areal, Love and Words - Sylvie Ballyot and Le Gout du néant - Pascal Robitaille. Here is information about the award:

"We have felt the necessity to assign a prize to a film - from among the selected features and documentaries - that reflects the evolution of Queer Cinema, today definitively released from the cliché of narrative and representation where it has been relegated for years. Queer Cinema uses different filmic languages to merge issues of identity with film genres and provoke our personal thought processes. It experiments as though an immense territory had opened for exploration by those having a story to tell.

Primarily this type of cinema is capable of spawning new authors. Its imagery gives us a cross section of humanity, stories about the world around us and in our imaginations. Different forms for different styles and content: social and family relationships, love, war and soul-searching are the themes of the six films chosen."

Introducing SOLOS before the screening

Torino GLBT Film Festival is one of the longest running and biggest GLBT Film Festivals in Europe. Having just returned, i can proudly attest to its size.... It's selection of films reads like an encyclopedia of GLBT films over the past year, most importantly, it supports and provides a platform for experimental films like SOLOS.

On top of its size, its hospitality is also amazing, it's a first time that i've been to a festival who can afford to pay for everything, including meal cards for meals. It's host to guest ratio is almost one to one.... and they invite over 200 guests per year.

1. Dance Video with Ming Poon and Daniel K

It was a great learning experience, and a draft for future collaborations (I hope) - and the first time i am working with 'professional' dancers. They moved beautifully, and I wish there was more time to do their beauty justice. Had to do pre-production, shoot, edit and submit in roughly a week because of the window of availability for all 3 of us.

2. Dance collaboration with Alice Tan

An extract from the piece presented. This was the project mentioned in the earlier posts, working with Alice (a Level 2 dance student in Lasalle College of the Arts) on a 'live' feed interaction with dance. The title of her piece is Bondage and it was presented last Tuesday (15th) in Lasalle.

I'm sure the idea has been done to death before, but it was still an interesting experiment for me. I was fascinated by the self perpetuating nature of the light 'loop' from a 'live' video to the projector. i.e. Light from the projector feeds the 'live' feed which in turn feeds the projector - since the projector is the single light source in the room.

The setup was relatively straightforward - no frills, but i was happy with the result as a 'work in progress'. Ming has a cameo in the middle of the performance. :)

I've started to lay out my folio on paper, just which photo goes where, keeping it simple and not too designed. I'll be printing it through blurb, definitely the cheapest option by far. Had lunch with a friend today and had a look at her blurb book, I'm happy with the print and paper quality, so it's definitely going to be blurb.

Read an article on pingmag about fabrica, apparently they get over 100 applications per week, which sounds very daunting. But I'm confident, I better be, I got no plan B. (Article here if you are curious.)

It is free, browser based and the site is easy to use. You can release your work at what level copyright you choose and provides access to Creative Commons license.

I spoke on two panels, primarily related to Sales Management. The first panel was titled "Sales-management skills for a new media era. " I was a guest speaker with Eric Shanfelt, EVP of eMedia for Aspire Media. Jack Bamberger, SVP of Corporate Sales for Meredith Corporation was also on the panel. We discussed a variety of topics around building out the sales channel, multi-platform sales, characteristics of online sales professionals, how to train print teams moving to sell online, the role of product development in the sales lifecycle, etc. Eric and Jack were fantastic to have on the panel and added deep insight for the audience's very specific questions.

The second panel was titled "Follow the Money" which dealt primarily with cash flow, AR, balance sheet issue, a topical discussion of software management for inventory and ad ops. Again, Eric and Jack provided their perspective on how to manage B2B and B2C specific challenges with online sales, impression counts, pricing, inventory projections, etc.

While I was "stuck" in Miami for the weekend due to the inclimate weather on the northeastern seaboard for a friday afternoon return flight, it was a great trip and an exciting panel to partake and share.
