Dear Citizen Folding bike,

Today you have filled me with rage fueled by disappointment and unmet expectations. I was not sure what to do with my feelings, so I figured I would take a cue from my cousin Jessica and write you an open letter that you cannot read.

After years of watching richer, cooler people whiz past me at stoplights on more expensive Go Bikes and Dahon's, that I could not afford, I was so happy and excited to find you! Within minutes of discovering your beautiful $180 price tag, I googled the SEPTA regional rail map to determine if purchasing you could fulfill my bike commute fantasies. I watched your demo video on your website, and underwent scorning from my friends when I showed them the link. I even wrote you a blog post!

I was so happy and excited when I ordered you, and had you delivered to my friend's house. I loved you so much, I would not have you delivered to my door, where you could be stolen if I was at work or napping. I sent you to the friend I trust the most: Fredda. This is where the blindsiding began from you dear folding bike. I endured hours of teasing at a BBQ at her house, from my friends who mocked your unique style. I defended you valiantly, proclaiming how my butt would soon shrink, while my friends got fatter in their SUV's.

So, while the timbuk2 messenger bag I ordered to match you came ASAP in the mail, you arrived to Fredda's late! On top of that, when I arrived to pick you up, you came damaged! Your beautiful box was full of holes, and you were so damaged in shipping that I had to return you! I took so much care to deliver you to the proper place, and you took no care in wrapping yourself for shipping so you would be ready for me to ride you. While I carefully choose my clothing in which to bike, you carelessly choose to dress yourself for shipping!

This was very problematic for me folding Bike! My return meant I had to endure my week at the beach without you! While my in-laws exercised on their bikes, with a refreshing breeze in their face, I was forced to burn off my fried seafood by running in the hot southern sun! While I was running (when I should have been riding you) I fell into quicksand up to my waist and fell over in front of a high rise condo filled with hundreds of people! Even small children and old people laughed at me! They should have been watching with awe and envy as I unfolded you on the sidewalk, but instead they were pointing and laughing.

It only got worse from there folding bike. I was so excited when you arrived for the second time, and I took you on a test ride to the train station, but my excitement soon turned to embarrassment when your chain fell off, and I could not get it back on. All of the fat rednecks in their trucks and air brushed conversion vans viewed me with mockery while I pushed you back to my house in my walk of shame.

My husband, who has yet to fail me this horribly, fixed you and taught me how to make up for your deficiencies. This was wise, as your chain has fallen off FOUR MORE TIMES! We had two or three fun days in the sun as I brought you along as my SEPTA buddy and rode you to my office, but then you began to fail me again. Even though it was 95 degrees outside that day, I did not want to let you down, so I decided to ride to work anyways.

As it turns out, this was a ridiculous decision because as I was riding down Market st. with your orange paint glistening in the sun, YOUR PEDAL FELL OFF! I, in turn, fell off of you, and smashed my stomach into your handle bar. Once again, I was the subject of public scorn as hung over Drexel students laughed at me while I dragged your frame in one hand, and your crank in the other. I was mocked so severely that I hid behind a tree to put your pedal back on. I woke up the next morning with a hideous bruise on the stomach fat I thought I'd lose by commuting with you to work.

When I realized I could not finish riding you to work, I had to call my boss/friend to leave a meeting to pick me up. But, you know what? HER PHONE WAS OFF! This meant that the secretary had to YELL what my problem was up a flight of stairs, on the first day of new staff orientation. She was in a meeting with her boss, so she had to send her assistant to come and rescue me.

I dragged you home again, and my husband fixed you again, as we began to patch up our relationship. I continued to ride you faithfully, even twice with strep!! BUT TODAY YOU FAILED ME AGAIN! This time, I was riding you in front of a group of my clients on Lancaster ave. in West Philadelphia, and as soon as I waved, YOUR PEDAL FELL OFF AGAIN! I again, crashed my bike, and was almost hit by a trolley and a car! Now, not only do hung over drexel students laugh at me, so too do my clients whom I am supposed to supervise. I was so angry at you while I pushed you to 30th street, that I considered throwing you into the river. I blissfully considered this thought while near the bridge, and you should know that the only thing that saved you from your watery doom was a bored police officer standing nearby.

Consider our relationship over folding bike! Once a hater, always a hater! You have hated on me by embarrassing me, and treating my feelings with disrespect. Oh well, I guess I will unload you to an unsuspecting environmentalist on craigslist, and get a Dahon for Christmas. And BTW, mother earth hates you too, because since you cannot control your components, I will be forced to spew fumes into her atmosphere. This further complicates things, because it is giving John McCain more reasons to drill for oil for my car in a WILDLIFE REFUGE! Your lack of coming through for me is increasing demand, and giving that DRILL, BABY, DRILL crowd more fuel for their fire. Thanks, but no thanks folding bike, for your wheels that got me nowhere.

This was a good weekend, albeit a busy one.

First off, I had my big concert this weekend.

It was the 10th Anniversary of the band in which I play. We even commissioned a piece for the occasion and gave the "world premiere" of it! This was also the piece where I had a solo. (Small solo- but still!) Truth be told, I had numerous little solos throughout the concert.

Yes- INTENTIONAL solos, you catty bitches.

For those band geeks who are curious, the lineup for the concert was as follows:

American Fanfare

Children's March (by Grainger)

Arutunian Trumpet Concerto

Down a Country Lane (Copland)

Spring Divertimento

Gavorkna Fanfare

Mozart Flute Concerto

Milestone (the commissioned piece)

Toccata Marziale (Vaughn Williams)

Circus Bee

Oh, and remember the Asian dude who was going to steal my thunder and play in the concert and "help" me on first chair? Yeah, well he didn't feel "comfortable" with his preparation level, so he bowed out of the concert.

Yeah! You got SERVED, bitch!

According to the feedback that I received, the concert went VERY well. Evidently it was the best concert of the year. Kyle was there, along with his friend Scott. Jim was there with his nephew Matthew. Cable Access was there recording it. And my MOTHER came up for the occasion.

Of course having mom here meant several things:

(a) I had to 'defag' the place before she arrived

(b) I didn't get to whore online

(c) I didn't get to work out

(d) I ate like crap

(e) I slept on the couch

Having mom in town also meant entertaining her- making sure that we had "activities" to do rather than just sit on the couch watching Lifetime. On Saturday we explored the unique shops on Grand avenue. And on Sunday, I took her to Ikea.

She'd never been.

GASP! I know! Never been in an Ikea!

Once there, she fell in love with the place and found a table and several other items that she wanted. And I found this chair. In the As-Is section, no less!

I call it my "Wonder Woman" chair. Because it reminds me of her invisible jet. I use it for my desk chair because the style totally compliments my Mac.

I was going to pay full price for the chair-- but they didn't have any in stock. When I found ONE of them in the As-Is section (marked down 25 dollars), I took it as a sign and scooped it up.

***RECORD SCRATCH SEGUE***

I also fixed my bike this weekend!

After mom left on Sunday afternoon, it was all of 10 minutes before I was getting dressed to go on a bikeride. I needed to burn off some serious pizza and beer calories.

Unfortunately I've still been having occasional derailleur trouble with my folding bike. I have been forced to make several cable adjustments during my previous rides because the gearing tended to skip some. I would fix the issue mostly, but would still have intermittant issues, especially with 3rd gear for some reason. And I never quite solved the issue which royally pissed me off.

Well- before my ride today I flipped my bike upside down and tried to cycle through the gears to verify that all was working well. It wasn't. As I got up to 7th and 8th gears I noticed that nothing happened with the derailleur when I changed between the two.

Which caused me to start poking around back by the derailleur hub. That was when I found this:

Yes- the yellow arrow and the red/yellow lines are the "derailleur adjustment setting" marks that were described oh so poorly in the instruction packet. And naturally the alignment was NOT close when I started.

Those bikeshop fuckwads didn't know how to set the goddamn thing. It took ME to figure it out-- and I'm GAY!

(Here, I am using the term 'gay' in a stereotypical context which assumes that I am mechanically incompetent and more inclined to call repairmen to watch them bend over rather than attempting repairs myself. Which of course I am.)

On the bright side, all of my bike's gears are working now, and my ride was quite enjoyable. Here are some pictures from my bikeride:

This is the view from the top of the Mounds Park trail. As you can see, spring is JUST starting to sprung up here.

I have never seen sculling on the Mississippi before. The current must be a real bitch.

When I moved to Minnesota, I took the opportunity to do some much needed paring down of my life. I probably got rid of a good half of my accumulated "stuff" and only kept the things that I really needed/wanted/meant something to me.

One of the things I kept was my bike.

I currently own a Giant Iguana (with the smoke chrome earth-killing paint job). Its a mountain bike and its a sturdy fucker. I bought it new back in 1991 when I started Grad School. It was identical to one of my best friend's bikes (because I had always coveted his).

While the bike is still excellent- it has some drawbacks. For one thing its entirely made of steel and is heavy. For another, it has no suspension components so the ride is rough. And lastly, the damn thing won't fit in a MINI Cooper, unless the top is down-- and I'll be DAMNED if I get a bike rack for my car.

This got me thinking (dangerous I know) about getting a new bike.

Aluminum technology has come a long way, so I could get one made of Aluminum! With SHOCKS!! And the cool, funky-angled, lower crossbar so I can avoid racking myself-- FUCK YEAH!

And then I remembered this couple that I used to play volleyball with in NC. They were very hippy-granola types and they had 'foldable' bikes that they rode absolutely everywhere. Made by Bike Friday out in Oregon. Cool fuckin' bikes, and they folded up to where they could fit in a suitcase.

A foldable bike would work in my MINI just fine! And how flippin' cool, right??

Well, Bike Friday bikes cost roughly $1000 as it turns out. For the BASE model. Shit, like I can afford THAT.

But there are other foldable bikes out there-- I did my research. I am in love with this one; it won design awards and even comes in my signature color orange. But it doesn't appear to be available anywhere (other than Europe possibly) and I couldn't figure out how to order it. Plus you just know its expensive as shit:

Then I looked into Dahon. They make a crapload of models and seem to get favorable reviews. I found a couple freakin' cool bikes on their website (all in the $700- $800 range unfortunately). This one caught my eye though and I was nearly sold on it, until I realized it was a Chinese company and the paint would probably be lead based or something.

Did you know that there are even FULL-SIZE folding bikes out there?? I sure didn't. The coolest one of these looks to be the Montague Paratrooper. In a camo green color, no less! It is still in the running as it not only offers the benefits of a regular mountain bike (26" wheels, sturdy frame, suspension, 18 or so gears) but it also folds into a compact 3 foot by 2 foot by 1 foot bundle which could fit in a MINI back seat.

But then I found "Downtube" bikes. Made in America. Much less expensive than other folders. Tend to get okay reviews online. And fairly cool looking to boot! I started thinking (I know... again!) that if I'm gonna go with a fold-upable bike, why not go all the way and get the 20" wheel crazy kind?

Its not like I'm an intense biker anyway-- just exercise and exploring. And this one would most DEFINITELY fit in my car... possibly even in the boot!

I think I may have found my bike. It has alloy folding pedals, and a no-derailleur style gear shift mechanism. Plus full suspension. And the real benefit-- the price. I can get one of these babies for around $400.

November 23rd, USA! November 24th, everybody else! For just one day, let's us buy nothing—not even super-cute fold-up pretty-colored bikes.

If you’re in need of inspiration for the big day, head over to shirt.woot. The theme of this week’s T-shirt design derby is consumption, and there are some pretty rockin designs posted. I’m not such a fan of the current top four, but it’s fun to look.

Despite appealing T-shirts and etc., the idea of not-buying sounds real good sometimes. Especially when I’m not in a store. Yes, susceptible me: avoiding stores dramatically decreases my inclination to purchase. I grew up in the woods, where there wasn’t anything to buy, and the result? A lot of the time, I bought nothing. Then I moved to the city and was corrupted by commerce. But that’s another story. . . .

The same is true of having a variety of good food in the house/garden: that makes me a lot less likely to want to bike over to Ye Olde Harris Teetere and buy something unhealthy—or drive, since consumption so easily breeds carelessness, at least for me.

If you can’t avoid buying a lil thing or two on the 23rd or 24th but would like to participate, consider designating another day as your very own Buy Nothing Day. Oh, and to get ideas for Buy Nothing Day actions (such as having a buy-nothing shopping cart conga line at Wal-Mart—hmm, maybe I can convince my parents to do this with me when they visit on the 23rd. . . .), check Adbusters.

To paraphrase the old favorite Rowland Alston, Happy nothing, everyone!

Continental Bike Shop presents the Spoken Wrench vol3 no8
Post-Interbike! 6" Crescent Wrench

There’s only one industry trade show left: Interbike. We’ve got a love hate relationship with it, in large part because it’s hosted in Las Vegas. And well, Vegas isn’t our idea of a good place to have a bike show, but it’s always been there, and at the rate we’re going it will always be there. The good thing is that we get to ride all the new bikes and try out the new stuff, and all that jazz before we order it. You know, to make sure we actually like what they’ve got to offer.

Tip of the Ice-Berg: Interbike Style!
In John’s Post-Vegas fuzziness, he’s only coming up with a few of the things he’s seen. The rest are momentarily lost to that “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” thing. And we don’t want to ask. And the rest, well, I can’t read his notes, and neither can he. When the translation is done, we’ll let you know.

Mobiky: So a few issues back, I mentioned that there was a new folding bike in town, and whet everyone’s whistle, and then told you nothing about it. Well, here it is: We’re now Mobiky dealers. You might have seen them at Sharper Image, you might not have, but they’re great folders. They told in seconds, feature a 3 speed internal hub, with a double/idler gear like the DaVinci tandems, so the small wheels aren’t a penalty. They roll when you’re done, and stand on their own. (great for leaning on if you’ve got a bad knee…) They unfold in another three seconds. If you dawdle.

New DaVinci Tandem: DaVinci has a new tandem for 2008, the Grand Junction. At around $2850, it’s the least expensive tandem DaVinci has ever offered. John rode the prototype in Vegas, and it ROCKED. I mean ROCKED hard core. With Shimano equipment and the same tube set as her more expensive cousins, the Grand Junction is just that, grand, and IPS makes this one sweet deal. The bike comes in two colors, red or blue, and three sizes: small, medium and large/small. We’ve got six bikes on order. If you want to get in line, $500 covers your spot in line and tandem clinic. And while this is the ‘entry level’ DaVinci, there’s nothing entry level about it.

Lake Shoes: We’re constantly in search of a better winter shoe, which means we’re constantly in search of the next winter shoe from Lake. No one does warm comfortable winter cycling shoes like them, and we’re happy to say they’ve gotten even better than before. With a segmented upper so it lays better and a Vibram sole so it lasts for near forever, the Lake MX Z302 is probably the best we’ve ever seen. And for those who prefer to do their winter riding indoors or at a spinning class. We have the Lake I/O (indoor/outdoor) 1. At just around $100, these shoes are great for recreational riding and spinning. The I/O1 features two Velcro straps, non-marking Vibram soles, and a super breathable mesh upper.

Unicycle.com
Unicycles are growing in popularity, who would have ever thought of downhill racing on a unicycle? Well, not me, but someone did, and we’ve been seeing more and more of them. So, in honor of the growing demand for a better selection of unicycles, we’ve become a Unicycle.com dealer. Anything they’ve got on their website, we can get. We aren’t going to stock anything right now, but we’re certainly hoping to connect more people with the perfect unicycle. And those strange parts they are sometimes in need of. So, if unicycles are your passion, or you’d like them to become your passion, check out unicycles.com and we’ll get you whatever it is you’re looking for. (They’ve got instructional videos and whatnot, for those of us who have never had the guts to actually try riding one.)

Nite Hawk is Here!
Its officially fall. And the weather is beautiful, if a little chilly. And its getting darker ever earlier. Just because its dark, doesn’t mean you’ve got to stop riding though. It does mean that you’ve got to be prepared. One great way to be ready is a Nite Hawk Phoenix Helmet Mount system. They feature a one touch power button, 4 hour charge time, helmet and handlebar mount, and it only weighs a pound. Most other lights like this weigh a lot more. The Nite Hawk battery fits nicely Velcroed on to the frame, or in a jersey/jacket pocket. They usually retail for $149 (139.00 + 10.00 shipping from the manufacturer) but we’ve got them for $100! We’ve got a bunch, but they won’t last long. If you’ve got to have one, give us a call and a deposit and we’ll put your name on one and set aside for you.

Dahon.com is a great site. Well it's great if you're looking into folding bikes. The reason this site if worth my weekly award is because of their quality. Also due to my new Dahon Vitesse D5 bike that came in the mail today. I took a nice test drive and spent some time with it, I love it! Just this march they discontinued the bike I bought.
Dahon quotes:

Dahon is committed to creating green mobility solutions for people who live active, environmentally friendly lifestyles.

Of Note: This is the first of the weekly WebSite glories. I will be posting sites that I think deserve to be looked at. WebSite of the Week will come every Monday.

Collapsible bike's or Folding bike's are cool on my list. I've been looking into the brand Dahon. In particular I have been looking at the Dahon Vitesse D5 which is a 2006 model. Compared to your "normal" bike, the folding bike is smaller, for compact reasons such as storage. Thats good, because I don't see much need to lock up a folding bike to a public post with a chain. I found that folding bicycles are popular in East Asia and the United Kingdom, but are less common in the United States. Their major advantage is that they can be folded up and taken on public transport and into buildings where conventional bicycles cannot. I prefer 20" wheels..rolling on Dubs. Well I plan on getting one between now and summer.

Apologies to those calling on our phone last week. Bloody telstra hooked up the wrong phone lines and we couldn't get any incoming lines or answer messages from our old line. I am plowing through the messages today and tomorrow, after breaking back into 456 pitt st and hearing the robot say "you have 30 new meassages"!

Slowly but surely, Georgina St is starting to look like a bike shop (Cheeky style). Dave and John and Nick are awesome. By this afternoon we should have a workbench to be able to start repairing stuff, and building some cool bikes. We had enquiries on 4 Surly builds yesterday, really nice people too. Dave, the Electra bike man, came in and spoke to Dave our man, about some cool cruisers and 3 speeds for getting around town on. I want to have a lounge and a couple of stools in front of the counter for people to hang out in the next couple of days.

If you have been in to the shop in the last month you may have noticed that we have been BBBed. We have stocked BBB products for ages, but now we have more, and the rep stocks it, so hopefully we never run out of stock that we should always
have. Especially of note are the BBB Glasses
$50-$100 ALL COME WITH 3 Lenses. Pretty good value, and especially good for this time of year.
And you can look like Tom Boonen

We have started stocking respro pollution masks, which are getting more comfortable with the cooler weather

AAand we have finally got in some non vegan Brooks saddles. We will be getting some saddlebags at some stage, but now we have a few B17s (from $100!) and a pro and saddle coevers and maintenance kits
And in very limited stocks we have Tubus German Cromo racks. (basically the best racks for expedition touring) We have 4 Cargos, 2 Flys, 2Tara fronts and 1Duo. There is more on the way apparently, but the last time we could get any was about 12 months ago, so if you want one get in soon.
And more form Germany are the latest Birdy folders. We have and Orange and a Blue and one of these babies coming in a couple of days.
The Orange Blue and Silver in the classic frame design have good stocks. The new monocoque frame is slightly lighter and there is 1 Anthracite and 2 Silvers left in the country for a few months or so.

another show, another bunch of kind of interesting stuff. adam and i volunteered at the test track but we seemed to spend more time wandering around the exhibition hall. There was an interesting "women and cycling: myths and realities" seminar but the vast majority of stalls had mass produced same old kind of set-up. the drop bar birdy looked cool and the new design frames are out there.
i always like to look at the baum bicycles display, inspect the welds, look hard at the paint job. it is amazing if you just take a few seconds longer to look at the join and the paint job on the bike that you just see another level rather simply a coloured collection of tubes.
i had the misfortune of having to use public transport for a few days as i injured me back and a knee injury flared up. i decided to get the train from bondi junction. i don't get out much and so seeing all the hordes of people flock to the station from the surrounding suburbs was like some flock making a pilgrimage to a waterhole or some such.
so i am sitting on the station waiting for the train and these booming speakers start spewing advertising and then a freakin television turns on and plays channel seven news updates and other assorted drivel.
i was judt dismayed, i am not writing righteously here, i just was like this can't be happening. when i opened my eyes, eveyrone around me who was standing was facing thescreen and watching the television.
when the dirty train bureacrats decided to glue the train windows up i thought that was a breach of my civil liberties to have access to fresh air and triedmostly unscuccessfully to re-open them, on this particular moring i just wanted to scream, 'whya re youwatching this shit?' or at least turn the bloody things off but then i thought what a disgustingly arrogant bastard i was to tell these people what to do, or even to think i knew better.
so i put up with it and tried to forget the experience on the train trip to central but then when i get to central i hear warning messages about unaccompanied baggage and that is the last straw, i have never disliked public transport but it is difficult to put up with some of the things that do not seem so public about the transport. why is channel seven on a public train platform?

Saturday morning has rolled around incredibly fast. (Well, it started as morning and now it's 4 0'clock. )

My first chance to take stock this week. Except i have a busy saturday ahead of me!

This week I had the good fortune of building andrew's rohloff equipped birdy this week. Mudguards, racks and the sweetest battery operated commuting light i have ever seen; the light and motion vega. It is a seriously cool bike, it oozes practicalility in a very shmick form. Look out for photos.

Welding at tafe is going pretty well. On monday we did some oxy cutting and gouging, on thursday we were doing outside corners on 1.6 stainless steel, then some fillet brazing. I have to get practicing so as not to let all this learning go to waste. Finding the correct equipment for torches and tips for bicycle specific brazing is proving quite difficult.

Tomorrow i will be off to sydney pitt st vegetarian restaurant for a dose of vegan yum-cha, sunday ritual.mmmmm. greasy.
later

The 10th anniversary critical mass ride went off. Moz should have photos available soon. A great turn out, maybe more than 150 cyclists paraded around the city streets before making our way to newtown to celebrate. The fam (paula and sol) accompanied adam, tiff, jo, jos and emma (riding solo on a tandem: bad boyfriend adrian).

We did not stay to party, the bubby had to get to bed. We did see a great tandem with a babyseat which was ridden very skillfully by a couple who looked like they were enjoying themselves. I hope to make critical mass a regular family/friend activity.

Race for Jase July 31 Penrose

was a huge success.$5000 raised for the cancer council, 95 riders on a sweet trail. Nice speech by Stevo to remember Jase by.

Photos are here

Davy's framebuiding adventure.

I have just begun my journey to framebuilding fame and am learning Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW or TIG) at tafe. I had wanted to learn ox-acetylene but it is no longer offered. I wanted to get some experience with welding and brazing before i shelled out more silly amounts to do the UBI lugged framebuilding course.

It is pretty cool to be learning how bicycle frames are put together, reading descriptions on the internet can not provide the practical experience of the assembling equipment, striking the arc and heating the metal.

So, this week we actually did some welding. Pretty scary first up to be handling a 6000 degree arc dabbing your filler rod uncoordinatedly into the edge of the molten pool trying to avoid the tungsten tip lest you contaminate it. People who are good at this must have very steady hands. We also did some oxy-acetylene welding on Monday night which was fun. Basic stuff but it is all complicated to me so takes a while to get the hang of heating the base metal enough, applying flux to your filler rod, tapping filler rod onto metal and then heating up the metal so the filler flows all the way through between the two plates.

I am intending to focus on City bikes, Holland style bikes, and touring bikes whatever else i have the ability to create will be a bonus. I think custom framebuilding has largely been priced out of contention in the consumer's consideration of a new bike. I am refusing to believe that quality cannot be offered at a reasonable price. Maybe i will eat my words when i realise the cost of setting up a workshop, insurance and the return on hours worked doesn't stand up. However, i feel like i have to find out. Offering quality products to enable cycling as transport to a broad range of people appeals as a job description to me.
