I was able to walk my 14 year old black labrador on the beach, where she so enjoys going for a swim, every day without being blown away by storms. Very unusual as September is usually a month of storms.

Called to see a friend who is overjoyed at the news she will soon be a grandmother. Her days of peace and quiet are numbered! 

Later in the day attended a 'planning law' event which was extremely interesting. It was organised by Friends of the Earth and speakers included barristers, Ombudsmen, planning professionals. The nice thing about it was you could ask any questions about planning and there was an expert to give you answers. The planning laws really need to change here - they are much better in other parts of the UK. I'm very involved in planning issues, belonging to a Residents' Assocation and Friends of the Earth.

You do these things to try and preserve your heritage. To see beautiful old homes destroyed, reduced to rubble and sometimes ugly modern little houses springing up in their place is not very pleasant. You can't help wondering if they will still be standing in a hundred years, as the old ones they replaced had been, standing proud and imposing, beautiful to look at. The sad thing is they will never be built again.

Letter from NIE

Well my letter has arrived from NIE instructing me to enter a 14 digit  code into my meter. Electricity has gone up 33.3% which means £2.81 onto a week's electricity. This may not sound an awful lot, but it's £11.24 a month, £134.88 a year. Does the state pension increase with the rapidity of fuel, electricity and food costs? No, don't be silly, of course it doesn't!

So how do pensioners survive? Although £2.81 a week doesn't sound too bad, it is when your pension doesn't increase. You don't get a pay rise, because you don't have a job. The job you loved and trained for was taken away when you reached 60.

No time to blog anymore, am off to feed a friend's five month old foal who has a broken bone in his leg. Hopefully he will mend and be able to canter around the fields with his mum. Will keep you up to date ...

I was in an assessment team so someone would make a referral to our services - usually the person themselves, or a family member or a GP or district nurse - someone who had reason to understand that care was needed for some reason. Sometimes the referrals came from ambulance crew or neighbours - occasionally they were anonymous (usually if it was a neighbour who was concerned  but didn't want to interfere or a family member who felt guilty).

So I'd trundle off and assess. Mostly it was something that was accepted and welcomed. I'd run through a series of questions trying desperately to make it sound more like a chat than an interrogation - and usually forget one or two things that I'd have to phone up and ask about later. That was how it was in the Community Care team.

Then I moved into Mental Health and it's different. It's a secondary service and most of the referrals come from the GPs now. I don't do a lot of assessments first time. Often I come in after the psychiatrist and armed with their reports as well as those sent from the GP.

So when I meet someone for the first time, I know a lot about them already and I don't have the safe pattern of a series of questions to warm up. One of the purposes of the Single Assessment Process was to try and take out the series of professionals all asking the same questions so I try not to repeat questions already asked.

I was considering this yesterday as I visited Mr G, who has a diagnosis of Alzheimer's and his wife, who has been his carer for many years. Both in their 80s and married for over 60 years, I entered the house as a stranger.

I wasn't sure where to go at first. After introductions I explained why I was there and some of the places we could take the conversation. I was talking, mostly, to Mrs G at this point.

Mr G found it hard to engage with conversation. He was constantly distracted. I felt uncomfortable excluding him from the conversation so I moved onto one of my staple 'ways to start talking'. I asked him about the photos on the wall, picking the older ones, intentionally - he began talking about his wedding (as that was the picture that I had pointed out!) and his memories of the days before he was married.

There was a definite decor theme going on. He loves animals. Every picture and ornament had a horse. I assumed it was his wife but no, he told me, he was a horse-man.

He told me about the stables down the road in the centre of the city - now redeveloped as luxury apartments. He told me how he used to go down to see the horses there and go riding through the city centre streets. His father was a horse-man too.

He spoke of the milk-cart horses and the taxi-cab horses. They used to race their horses in the parks, he said. The city, he said, was full of horses. He was a horse-man.

I was thinking out aloud when I spoke about the differences in the city to him and his wife. How you just couldn't be a horse-man in the city these days - not without a lot of money at any rate.

Of course there are stables attached to some of the finer parks but you don't get many working class horse-men in the city anymore. It is a middle-class frivolity. At least in the city.

He told me how his son had loved horses too, just like his father and grandfather before him. But he wasn't a horse-man, his son. He couldn't be - all the horses  had gone.

I spoke to his wife about support and facilities available on offer. But having touched a nerve with the horses, I know now something I can make a note of in our records - something that lights a spark in his soul however much of  his memory is being eaten up.

Once a horse-man, always a horse-man.

Now I just need to try and find some central London stables that might welcome a visit - not necessarily an easy task but I have a feeling it might be a very satisfying one.

I'm out of room. Hay is too expensive. The market is in the tank. What's a girl to do?

The obvious answer: Sell, sell, sell. My dilemma - there's no market for horses in my area.

I really do need to downsize. There are a few horses - besides my foals that I raise for the very reason of selling - that I should sell. One being the mom to my stallion, the other being her half sister. Neither would I ever breed to Chip. (This year doesn't count, that was an accident! :) ) So from a business standpoint I have no reason to keep them. However, Tara is my best broodmare. She and Crystal were also the first horses hubby and I bought together. So there is a sentimental aspect to it.

Then there is my yearling stud colt. I will never do anything with him. I have a yearling filly in the works, plus a two-year-old gelding. Harsh as it may sound, I have no use for the colt. I thought I might, but honestly I don't and it's not fair to him just to spend all day in a pen doing nothing.

It's obvious I need to sell some horses, but where - in this messed up market - do you sell without feeling guilty? Reputable sales. How do you find them? more on that next time :)

They aren't the best. For soem reason Tara just didn't want me taking pictures. I told myself I was not going to keep any foals this year. I have enough. Two from last year, and one from each year since 2003.  But the more I look at her, I wonder .... I don't need another horse. I don't need another foal from Tara - of the three she's had I've kept two!  But Tara is my best mare and consistantly has the best foals.  But i'm not allowed to keep another horse. i'm not. Really i'm not.

Someone once told me that linebreeding is when you do it right and inbreeding is when you do it wrong.  I guess I did something right with this little one :)

So now the question is - do I register her or just leave her a grade horse?  This is a case of her father is her brother and I know some people make their living by line/in breeding, but I just can't convince myself it is a good thing. Would you buy a horse that is related to itself? (Tara is Chip's mom, Chip is the foal's dad - you do the math)

ok, so I suppose that is really two questions: Do I register her or not? and Would you buy a horse that closely line/inbreed?

We debated whether or not to go, and in the end decided we might as well as, despite the weather being inclement, neither of us would melt in the rain and we really wanted some fresh air and exercise. The rain didn't bother me. The wind did. I really really don't like cycling in windy weather. As my dad put it yesterday, with a hill you know what you're up against and can plan accordingly. When it's a windy day, you don't know when you're going to be buffetted, and you're not even guaranteed to build up momentum going downhill, let alone on the flat.

However, we saw some nice things on the coast road; the usual array of animals, but as a special treat we were lucky to see an extremely newborn foal, just about tottering on his legs around his mother, while the mother unconcernedly munched on some grass. I obviously made too much of a fuss about childbirth!

I also fitted my cycle computer yesterday, and as a result spent far too much time watching the numbers scan between all the different readings and not enough time studying the road - I'm lucky I didn't end up in one of the reens!

Somewhere I plan to take my bike soon is the Cardiff Bay Barrage. As of last Friday morning, the public is now allowed to walk and cycle along it, and I'm fairly sure (from reading the website) that I should be able to get to Penarth across it. I'll let you know! Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to do that ride towards the end of the week. Something else I plan to do soon is to go further afield from Cardiff by taking my bike on the train and then cycling back. I think I should easily be able to cover 15 miles, and so I'll have to get a large wall map of the area and see how far away I can get! Also, I'm looking forward to going to Bristol or Bath on the train, cycling to whichever one I didn't travel by train to, and then getting the train back. Eventually I'd like to travel to somewhere just over the other side of the first Severn Bridge and then cycle back, because I've been really taken by the idea of cycling over the bridge since I found out that it was possible! I'd love to hear from anyone who has cycled over the Severn Bridge before, and also anyone with any route recommendations in South Wales and the bit of England that South Wales is stuck to!

]]> <![CDATA[God's Little Miracle]]> http://custompastelportraits.wordpress.com/?p=11 Sat, 21 Jun 2008 20:58:55 +0000 custompastelportraits http://custompastelportraits.wordpress.com/2008/06/21/gods-little-miracle/      The Lord loves to show us miracles.  Last Sunday morning was just that.  We received a phone call from a neighbor about 6 am.  His wife and daughter were at a horse show, so caretaker of the 5 or so horses at the farm.  One of their boarders had a Quarter Horse mare in foal in the back pasture.  She wasn't due for another month.  He awoke to their dog frantically wanting outside, so he let her out and went to get the morning chores in motion.  He noticed the mare down the fence at the back of the pasture, where it meets the woods then drops down into a ravine.  He walked out as she was pacing and calling out, as if there was another horse in the woods.  He arrived to find she had given birth right at the fence, which happens to seven strands of high tensile wire, not barbed or electric.  Suddenly, the foal cried out.  It was out there someplace in the woods!

      He phoned us to see if we could help find the foal.  We drove over and he called out from behind the house in the woods.  We met him and he had a beautiful brown filly in his arms.  Apparrently, after she was born she rolled under the fence.  When she stood up, she was on the wrong side, which also slopes heavily to the bottom of the ravine.  The ligh was probably not good at the time, and in her struggle to get out she crawled up the other side and ended up behind the house.  We started to carry her, but it was going to be quite a distance to get around the ravine, down the drive to the barn.  We decided to guide her, so the neighbor guided her back while I gently held and rubbed her neck.  My husband worked gates and moved branches.  Finally, we were back in the pasture.  She called to Mom, who came running full speed.  Miraculously, she did not have a scratch on her!  Thank you Lord!  The vet came out and did all the checks and there is now a new, healthy subject to paint.  Some photos have already been taken, more on the way, I'm sure.  Drawing, pastels, or should I try acrylics?

Now I'm aware that the fashion gods decided that platform shoes are in again. I also must acknowledge that I tend to love Free People, as it is a brand that enables my not-so-secret desire to be a hippie. (A fake, well-dressed hippie, of course.) But those shoes! Look at those things! I don't think the Spice Girls would have even worn them back in the '90s. And according to their description, they have a terrifying four-and-a-half inch heel. As a 5'11" girl with a general dislike for heels, height like that is enough to make me woozy. (The image that just popped into my brain as I pictured myself wearing the monstrosities: a just-born foal with its wobbly little legs, stumbling all over the place.) So uh, anyway, these shoes are hideous, happy Friday, and will someone please bring me a breakfast sandwich?

]]> <![CDATA[Lola's Fight]]> http://caprigalli.wordpress.com/?p=36 Thu, 29 May 2008 01:58:34 +0000 caprigalli http://caprigalli.wordpress.com/2008/05/29/lolas-fight/ Lights of London "Lola" was born three weeks premature on May 11, 2008 to my mare, Emma.  She was a beautiful little Cleavland Bay/Thoroughbred cross.  She fought for 8 long days in the ICU in Corvallis.  My friend Krista, her owner, made the very difficult decision to euthanize her to ease her painful struggle.  This is a very sad time for her.  I know all who read this will remember her in your prayers.   This picture was taken just hours before she died.  Emma stuck with her the whole time and wouldn't leave her half-stall the entire 8 days.  This was Emma's first baby.

One of her many horses had given birth to a foal. This isn't in itself unusual, apart from the fact that no-one knew she was pregnant. They've been riding her right up until the day that the foal appeared. According to the stables, one of them found the it in the Mares' field late at night and thought that someone had just dumped it there. They put it with a Mare who already had a foal so that it could get something to eat (you can tell I never went to vet school). Pixie (K's horse) looked as though she had mastitis, and when the vet examined her, he realised that the foal was her's. This means Pixie would have been pregnant when R bought her last year. K isn't happy, as she now doesn't have a horse to ride for 6 months. R isn't happy because she has to visit the stables 4 times a day for the next 6 months to look after Pixie. A is happy, because K has given her the foal. It's called Lola-Star, and they think it might have some racehorse in it: should be an entertaining ride.

I created extra work for myself this afternoon. I refitted the plastic rear mudguard on the bike and gave the underside of the metal part a bit of a clean up to get rid of some more rust. I decided to have a go at the black pitting on the top of the mudguard with a bit of wet-and-dry. Starting with 120 grade (Halfords-rubbish) and working up through 280 to 400 grade (B&Q - good quality, doesn't disintigrate on contact with water like the Halfords rubbish), I wasn't able to get rid of any of the pitting, but I did manage to put fine scratches all over the metal. So, I had a go at it with the polishing mops: once using a drill and once using the bench grinder. After a couple of hours work, it now looks almost exactly the same as it did before I started. Still, at least it made me feel as if I'd done something.

]]> <![CDATA[vaccinations]]> http://forloveofahorse.wordpress.com/?p=22 Wed, 21 May 2008 17:48:31 +0000 ravenlea http://forloveofahorse.wordpress.com/2008/05/21/vaccinations/ If you ask 10 differant horse people what vaccinations they give their horses, you'll get 10 differant answers.  In truth, I don't know that there is any right or wrong answer.  Much of it depends on the area you live in and what diseases are prone to that area, as well as your own peace of mind when it comes to your horses.  For example, I have never vaccinated for Potomac Horse Fever. I live in Idaho, why would I? However I do know of some cases here, so it is in the back of my mind to look into vaccinating for it.

What I normally give is a 5-way shot that includes Tetnus, Eastern and Western encephalomyelitis, Rhinopneumonitis, and Influenza type A2, and they all get a West Nile Vaccine and Rabies shot.  All my horses get these shots, from my stud to all the mares, the geldings, and down to the yearlings.  The only ones who do not get vaccinated are my foals.  I do not vaccinate them until they are weaned. 

I know. I can hear it now - but they need it now! How can you not vaccinate your babies?  My answer is simple: We have had trouble in the past vaccinating foals.  Namely having them die from the vaccinations. This is why I also do not vaccinate my mare until they foal. We used to, until we had mares start to abort their foals not long after giving the vaccinations.  The first year we thought it was a fluke. After the second year, we quit vaccinating until the foals hit the ground and have never had a problem since. Right or wrong, it has worked for us.

This year the AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) came out with new guidelines for vaccinating horses.  Thehorse.com has a great article on the new guidelines:  http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=8417 you do have to be a member to access the article, but registration is free and worth the couple seconds it takes to sign up.

We'll take Sissy for example.  Since she was open we vaccinated her in April with the 5-way, WNV, and rabies. And since she was going out to be breed, we also gave the strangles vaccine. She was also dewormed with ivermectin. Once she is confirmed in foal (appointment scheduled for next monday, yea!), she will get rhinopneumonits (Rhino shots) at 5, 7, and 9 months.  We give Pneumabort-K, but I know there are others on the market.  Once the foal is born, Sissy will get another round of 5-way, WNV, and rabies as well as dewormer. At 5 months of age when the foal is weaned, he/she will receive his/her vaccinations.

Why not? Friesian’s are beautiful, versatile horses.  So why not get a purebred, rather than a sport horse? Because, even in today’s declining horse market, I can’t afford a purebred Friesian.

 

I’ve been debating what I plan to do with the horse once it gets here.  Originally I thought about getting back into dressage, but then I remembered how much I disliked it, and decided not to punish myself. So I think, the yet unnamed, unborn foal will be a trail horse.  And there is nothing wrong with that. I pride myself on raising solid minded, conformationally correct, trail horses.  Yes, I might decide to show the youngling in longe line classes, and/or halter classes locally, but I don’t have to.  This foal is wanted and I have no plans to sell him/her.

 

Why breed to a Quarter Horse? Well, that's a no-brainer - QHs are what I raise,so it stands to reason that I would use one of my own horses.  And this is my sweet gray mare, Sissy, who is bred to the wonderful Friesian stallion, Dutch.

 

Ok, I'll admit, it isn't the best picture i've ever taken of her, but it does show her off and everyone knows, there's nothing a horse person likes better than showing off and talking about their horses.

She had just bought a horse that was a little high spirited and temperamental. Yes, a mare. And the gal was told to breed her, as pregnancy would tone her down, calm her, give her a new attitude.  So in this forum she was asking about when to breed the mare and if she could ride her and what kind of stud to breed her too. 

 

I am going to pause for just a moment to state the obvious – horse people are cruel! This poor gal was jumped on from all sides and never got a reprieve. The people on this forum beat her down telling her in not so many words, how foolish she was for wanting to breed. That she had to be inexperienced if she even thought that breeding her mare would calm it, and that if she knew so little about horses, what was she going to do with a foal?

 

Needless to say the discussion was locked by the time I got around it reading it, so I decided to post my comments here for those horse crazy people (the good kind!) that can’t get a straight, kind answer to their honest questions. I applaud the gal for asking, for there are too many who just assume they know it all and get themselves in a heap of trouble.

 

Here is my take: First off, will breeding a mare calm her down? Most likely not. This rumor has been going around forever. Yes, a mare may seem more docile, more lovey while she’s pregnant. You would too if you were carrying a couple extra hundred pounds around. On the flip side, the mare may do just the opposite. Just as some women take to pregnancy as if they were made for it, other women turn into the wicked witch of the west. Same with mares.  And you always have to remember. If you don’t like the attitude of the mare, you most likely won’t like the attitude of the foal. I think it is 89% of the time the foal gets the mare’s temperament, not the stud. 

 

Second, are you ready for that kind of responsibility?  Do you want to wait up at night, checking the mare, hoping for an easy birth, no complications for mare of foal? Are you ready for the unthinkable to happen – either mare or foal, or both, die?

 

You can tell me that you have it all planned out. Nothing will happen. Horses have foals all the time, and in the wild no one helps them. Well, yes, you would be correct, but honey, your horse ain’t living in the wild. All these people bother me with their “We want to go natural” crap with their horses. I hate to be the one to burst the bubbles, but how we keep horses – there’s nothing natural about it.  (You want to argue? That’s fine, I don’t mind.)

 

Back on track - personally, I would not suggest a beginner breed their horse. First you need to make sure you are financially able to afford both mare and foal. Not just the board, but the vet bills, farrier bills, feed bills, vaccinations all times two now. Second, if you aren’t planning on keeping the foal, do you know where you will sell it? In the failing horse market today, selling foals is tough. Heck, selling any horse is tough! Just be aware you may keep that foal for longer than anticipated, sell it for less than what you considered, and not recoup the money put into it – if that last is part of your goal, that is.

 

But for arguments sake, let’s say you’ve planned it out all ahead. Money’s no object, foal will sell when you wean it. Life is sunshine and lollipops. Good for you! J
