Myk Miranda, Mithi Esguerra, and I were invited to speak on Radio Migrante (105.5FM) yesterday afternoon on the theme of migration and identity. For one hour every Tuesday from 4-5pm, York University Radio with host Marco Luciano of Migrante-Ontario runs this program about the Filipino migrant experience.

See my previous post, Filipinos in Canada, for an overview of the Fil migrant experience to Toronto.

Mithi, who came to Canada as a teenager because of political repression in the Phils (her father was a political prisoner and is still a prominent activist today), was there representing Migrante-Youth. Myk, who was born in Canada and whose families is one of the original migrants to Toronto, represented the KPC. I was born in the Phils and came to Canada with my family when I was two. I was there to represent both for KPC and for another group I work with, PATAC.

We were asked about racism* and our community, with the Jeffrey Reodica shooting as one dramatic example. What do you readers think? How does racism affect our community? This is a question I've dealt with and answered in different ways at different points in my life.

[*as a sidenote, there's a new book about Asian racism called "The Myth of the Model Minority" that seems interesting. I haven't read it yet though.]

Identity was also a prominent topic. How you you identify? As a Filipino or a Canadian? And what do those terms mean anyway? What part does language and knowledge of cultural history play in this identity? Myk led a youth discussion on this topic last week and I'm sure thoughts around this issue were still fresh in his mind.

These are the types of questions that I'm sure we all have to go through in our youth to mature in our concept of self. We are immigrants or the children of immigrants. That migration plays a BIG part in who we are as individuals and a people--whether we admit it to ourselves or not.

As you may know, over 4000 Fiipinos leave the Philippines everyday to work abroad. Many suffer. In Canada most of our migrants are currently women coming to work as live-in caregivers. Just locally in Toronto in the last year two have made headlines:

Jocelyn Dulnuan was murdered in the home of her employer. And Juana Tejada, who completed the difficult requirements of the live-in caregiver program, was threatened with deportation when she was discovered to have terminal cancer.

Prime Radio Group general manager Rick Chapman said he was pleased to appoint D'Arcy in a bid to help increase the station's Olympics coverage.

Il s'agit d'un Jeep Cherokee Chief, dont la carrosserie semble plutôt propre, puisque c'est un modèle de 1987.

Arrangez ça comme vous voulez, mais il y a une attache de remorque... à l'avant!  Le sympathique propriétaire précédent, qui habite Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, m'a précisé qu'il se servait du véhicule principalement pour tirer son bateau.  Ceux qui manoeuvrent souvent des remorques savent bien que si une telle installation est plutôt inutile sur la route, elle est très pratique sur des terrains fermés,  car il est plus facile de déplacer une remorque sans avoir à constamment tourner la tête vers l'arrière.  Mais ne vous en faites pas; je lui trouverai bien une utilisation.  En passant, la flaque d'huile, sous le pare-chocs, est une gracieuseté de la pompe de servo-direction, qui a été remplacée depuis la prise de ces photos.

Le toit et le hayon arrière, ainsi que le capot, qui porte toujours les bandes décoratives propres à ce modèle, sont encore recouverts de la peinture d'origine, qui date de 21 ans.  Les côtés ont toutefois déjà été repeints.

Autre détail original, le lettrage, à l'arrière, qui montre bien qu'il s'agit d'un Cherokee Chief.  Évidemment, une autre attache de remorque est installée, au bon endroit, cette fois.

Si l'extérieur est encore très potable, l'intérieur accuse davantage le poids des années.

Voilà le secret de la longévité de sa carrosserie; il a été traité, pendant plusieurs années, à l'huile antirouille.

La blogue-mobile est équipée d'une boîte manuelle à 5 rapports.  On constate, une fois de plus, à la vue du soufflet du levier de transmission, qu'il reste beaucoup de petits détails à fignoler, du côté de la finition intérieure.

À défaut de proposer la climatisation, ce véhicule est toutefois muni d'une radio AM/FM de qualité, à façade détachable, de marque JVC, et doté d'une télécommande.  Elle lit également les CD, CD-RW et les MP3.

Parmi les trucs à fignoler, un compresseur à air, dont on voit ici la commande, qui permettra, une fois redevenu fonctionnel, l'installation d'amortisseurs pneumatiques.

Voici l'une des principales raisons pour laquelle j'ai choisi ce véhicule.  Il est doté d'une boîte de transfert Selec-Trac, qui permet le passage de 2 à 4 roues motrices à la volée.

Le tableau de bord est passablement complet, avec tous les indicateurs, que je préfère de beaucoup aux lampes-témoin qui, malheureusement, équipent encore beaucoup de véhicules américains.

Au prix où je l'ai payée, lequel comprend également quatre très bons pneus d'hiver, montés sur des jantes en acier, je ne suis pas sans me douter qu'il y aura des réparations à effectuer.  L'ancien propriétaire a été tout à fait honnête, et toutes les réparations effectuées à date concernent des problèmes qu'il m'avait révélé.  À date, j'ai remplacé la pompe de servo-direction, le radiateur, et le ventilateur du système de chauffage, le tout avec succès.  Présentement, elle est à Saint-Lin--Laurentides, où on procède à la rénovation du plancher, ainsi qu'à quelques trucs sur la carrosserie.  À son retour, j'aurai à remplacer un joint d'étanchéité au niveau de la boîte de direction, qui vient de commencer à fuir.  Ensuite, ce sera la tournée d'entretien; vidange d'huile à moteur, de transmission manuelle, des deux différentiels et de la boîte de transfert.  Bref, de quoi m'amuser pendant plusieurs week-ends.

Par contre, comme il s'agit pour moi d'un second véhicule (j'ai déjà une voiture sous-compacte), je n'ai pas de pression, au niveau de l'entretien et des réparations.  J'y vais en fonction de mon budget, et de mes temps libres.  J'ai toujours aimé "bizouner" la mécanique, et cette Jeep me permet de le faire, et ce sans le stress d'avoir à tout remonter rapidement, pour cause de nécessité.

Quant à la réserve de photos, elle commence à tirer à sa fin, ce qui veut dire que je devrai repartir à la chasse aux images.  Je ne vais pas vous révéler mes intentions en détails, de peur de me pas remplir mes engagements.  La chasse aux photos est souvent sujette aux tribulation de Dame Nature, dont la météo est plus incertaine que jamais, cette année.  Mais il me reste mon dernier coup de tête, incidemment sous la pluie, et en plein territoire des moustiques, soit cet échangeur en devenir, dont la vocation fut transformée, par la force des choses, en passe à chevreuils.  Un indice de plus?  C'est dans la région des Cantons-de-l'Est, tout près de celle du Centre-du-Québec.

The station is now reported to be in talks with DAB multiplex operators with a view to securing space on that terrestrial digital platform. This could be a national DAB network or a series of local DAB networks.

It has also been reported that the station will launch on Freesat next month.

Under a licence agreement the station will continue to operate under the Original FM brand name.

Cellular Phone Towers

What Are Cellular Phone Towers?

The widespread use of cellular phones has led to the placement of cellular phone towers in many communities. These towers, also called "base stations," consist of radios, computerized switching equipment, and antennas that receive and transmit radiofrequency (RF) signals.

When a person makes a cellular phone call, a signal is sent from the phone’s antenna to the base station antenna. The base station responds to this signal by assigning it an available radiofrequency channel. Transmission and reception of these radio signals transfer the voice information to the base station. Next, the voice signals are sent to a switching center, which transfers the call to its destination. For additional information on the phones themselves, please see the American Cancer Society document, "Cellular Phones."

Cellular phone towers are usually mounted either on top or on the side of existing structures, such as trees, water tanks, or tall buildings. The antennas need to be located high enough so they can adequately cover the area. Base stations usually range in height from 150-270 feet.

Cellular phones operate at the radiofrequency (RF) part of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is non-ionizing radiation. Other examples of the non-ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum include AM and FM radio waves, microwaves, and infrared waves from heat lamps. Unlike x-rays and gamma rays (which are examples of ionizing radiation), radio waves have too little energy to break the bonds that hold molecules (such as DNA) in cells together. Similarly, since RF of this frequency contains relatively low energy, it does not enter tissues. At very high levels of exposure, RF can cause warming of tissues, much as a heat lamp does. The wavelength of cell phone waves is about one foot and the frequency is approximately 800 to 900 MHz, although newer models may use higher frequencies up to 2,200 MHz.

How Are People Exposed to Radiofrequency Energy From Cellular Phone Towers?

As people use cellular phones to make phone calls, signals are transmitted back and forth to the base station. The radio waves produced at the base station are emitted into the environment, where people can be exposed.

The energy from a cellular phone antenna, like that of other telecommunication antennas, is directed toward the horizon (parallel to the ground), with some downward scatter. Base station antennas use higher power levels than other types of land-mobile antennas, but much lower levels than radio and television broadcast stations. The power density decreases with increasing distance from the antenna. As a result, the level of exposure to radio waves at ground level is very low compared to the level close to the antenna.

Public exposure to radio waves from cellular phone antennas is slight for several reasons. The power levels are relatively low, the antennas are mounted at high above ground level, and the signals are transmitted intermittently, rather than constantly.

Agencies such as the National Council on Radiation Protections and Measurements, the International Radiation Protection Association, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American National Standards Institute, have established guidelines for exposure to RF radiation originating from cellular communications base stations. These guidelines were designed to protect workers, as well as the public, from potentially harmful radio frequency. The recommended exposure limits are in the range of .41-.45 milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm2) for cellular radiofrequencies.

Exposures that exceed these recommended standards can sometimes be encountered on the rooftops of buildings where base stations are mounted. If this is the case, access to these areas should be limited. The power density inside buildings where a base station is mounted is typically 10 to 100 times lower than the level outside depending on the construction materials of the building. Wood or cement block reduces the exposure level of RF radiation by a factor of about ten. The power density behind an antenna is hundreds to thousands of times lower than in front. Therefore, if an antenna is mounted on the side of a building, the exposure level in the room directly behind the wall is typically well below the recommended exposure limits.

Do Cellular Phone Towers Cause Cancer?

Humans generate electromagnetic fields internally as well as externally. The simple collision between 2 molecules is an electrical event. Since there is electrical activity inside the human body, the question arises as to whether radio waves emitted by cellular phone towers can influence cell function, and in particular whether they can cause cancer.

However, several theoretical considerations suggest that cellular phone towers are unlikely to cause cancer.

First, the energy level of radio waves is relatively low. Electromagnetic energy comes in "packages" that are referred to as photons. Photon energy is measured in electron volts (eV), the energy gained by an electron after accelerating over 1 volt. The energy in the photons depends directly on the frequency, and decreases as one moves down the electromagnetic spectrum. X-rays have about 1,000 eV of energy, while the photon energy of radio waves from cellular phone towers is about one millionth of an eV, not enough to alter molecules in the body.

A second issue has to do with wavelength. Radio waves have a wavelength of approximately 1 foot in air, and about 2 inches in body tissue. As a result, RF radiation can only be concentrated to about an inch or two in size. This makes it unlikely that the energy from radio waves could be concentrated on a small bit of tissue, affecting individual cells.

A third issue has to do with the magnitude of exposure. Measurements taken around typical cellular phone towers show ground level power densities well below the recommended limits. Moreover, public exposure near cell phone towers is not significantly different than background levels of RF radiation in urban areas from other sources, such as radio and television broadcast stations.

For these reasons, cell phone antennas or towers are unlikely to cause cancer.

What Does the Epidemiologic Evidence Say?

No human studies have focused specifically on cellular phone towers or even on radio waves more generally. Several studies have looked at the effects of radio waves and microwaves combined; these have generally not shown any increase in cancer, except for a US Air Force study that suggested an increase in brain tumors in association with radiofrequency/microwave exposure.

What Does the Animal Evidence Say?

A number of animal studies have been conducted, generally showing no carcinogenic (cancer-causing) effect of radio waves. Several experiments have used exposure levels that cause a rise in tissue temperature, and even in these studies, there was no increase in DNA mutations or in cancer. A recent review concluded that: "The scientific evidence indicates that exposure to radiofrequency radiation fields is not mutagenic and is therefore unlikely to act as an initiator of carcinogenesis.”

What Do the Expert Agencies Say?

The expert agencies that usually provide findings on carcinogenicity (whether something can cause cancer) – the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – have not issued findings on cellular phone towers.

The World Health Organization stated in 1993 that "the epidemiologic and comparative clinical studies do not provide clear evidence of detrimental health effects in humans from exposure to RF fields. Occupational exposure to RF will be at higher levels than that encountered by the general population, and, thus, there is less likelihood of health effects in the general population as a whole.”

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) offers the following information to individuals concerned about the safety of cellular phone towers (also known as wireless telephone base stations):

The electromagnetic RF signals transmitted from base station antennas stations travel toward the horizon in relatively narrow paths. For example, the radiation pattern for an antenna array mounted on a tower can be likened to a thin pancake centered around the antenna system. The individual pattern for a single array of sector antennas is wedge-shaped, like a piece of pie. As with all forms of electromagnetic energy, the power decreases rapidly as one moves away from the antenna. Therefore, RF exposure on the ground is much less than exposure very close to the antenna and in the path of the transmitted radio signal. In fact, ground-level exposure from such antennas is typically thousands of times less than the exposure levels recommended as safe by expert organizations. So exposure to nearby residents would be well within safety margins.

Cellular and PCS (Personal Communications Service) base stations in the United States are required to comply with limits for exposure recommended by expert organizations and endorsed by government agencies responsible for health and safety. Measurements made near cellular and PCS base station antennas mounted on towers have confirmed that ground-level exposures are typically thousands of times less than the exposure limits adopted by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). In fact, in order to be exposed to levels at or near the FCC limits for cellular or PCS frequencies an individual would essentially have to remain in the main transmitted radio signal (at the height of the antenna) and within a few feet from the antenna. This is, of course, very unlikely to occur.

When cellular and PCS antennas are mounted on rooftops, RF levels on that roof or on others near by would probably be greater than those typically encountered on the ground. However, exposure levels approaching or exceeding safety guidelines should be encountered only very close to or directly in front of the antennas. In addition, for sector-type antennas, typically used for such rooftop base stations, RF levels to the side and in back of these antennas are insignificant. General guidelines on antenna installations and circumstances that might give rise to a concern about a facility's conformance with FCC regulations can be found in A Local Government Official's Guide to Transmitting Antenna RF Emission Safety: Rules, Procedures, and Practical Guidance. Do Cellular Phone Towers Cause Any Other Health Problems?

While high levels of radiofrequency waves can cause a warming of tissues, cellular phone towers do not yield exposure at levels sufficient to cause this effect. There is no evidence in published scientific reports that cell phone towers cause any other health problems.

What Do I Do If I’ve Been Exposed to Cellular Phone Towers?

As noted above, cell phone towers pose little risk under ordinary conditions. There is no test to measure whether you have been exposed to RF radiation from cellular phone towers. However, if there is a cellular phone tower mounted near your home or office, you can ask a government agency or private firm to measure the radiofrequency field strength near the tower to ensure that it is within the acceptable range. If you have additional health concerns, please consult your doctor.

The Bottom Line...

Cellular phone towers, like cellular phones themselves, are a relatively new technology, and we do not yet have full information on health effects. In particular, not enough time has elapsed to permit epidemiologic studies. There are some theoretical reasons why cellular phone towers would not be expected to increase cancer risk, and animal studies of RF have not suggested a risk of cancer. People who are concerned can ask for measurements of RF near cellular phone towers to be sure exposures do not exceed recommended limits.

Asian American actor Sung Kang had a starring role in a music video for one of Korea's biggest KPOP groups at the time.

In the year 2000, g.o.d. released their third album with the highly successful single 거짓말 (lies). The video was shot in the states and featured Sung Kang as the main character.

Sung Kang would later go on to star in the critically acclaimed independent film Better Luck Tomorrow and more recently, The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift.

In fact Sung Kang has recently appeared in at least two other music videos for the Far East Movement for their singles Round Round and Satisfaction.

It's always fun to see how some actors break their way into the business.

Jaagu and Tarana do the morning drivetime show on Radio One during weekdays. They are really a crazy host combination. Jaagu with his obsession with food and amazing ways to turn almost any conversation to food along with a sense of humor that can only be matched by Tarana. Tarana is a Soap actor during the daytime but leaves no opportunity to take her own as well as anybody's (who is that business) case.

And these two, turn into a lethal combination when they start with their sarcasm, you can't stop listening to them and laughing all the way to office. In addition to this, their voices are heavy and are really suited for radio. Like them on the show!

Antes de continuar quiero agradecerle a Irma, una usuaria que hizo el favor de avisar mediante un comment en este post la presencia de Sergio Zurita en el programa de Martha Debayle, el cual no escuché en vivo pero acabo de escucharlo en la página de W.

Efectivamente Sergio Zurita reapareció en la radio mexicana en el programa de Martha Debayle que se transmite de lunes a viernes de 12:00 a 14:00 hrs. por W Radio. La razón fué que Martha Debayle tuvo como tema el mundo de los espectáculos en México, y para ello invitó a Paty Chapoy y Daniel Bisogno de Ventaneando, Sergio Zurita de La Taquilla y Lupita Martinez de Mi Guía. Tambien había invitado a Juan Jose Origel pero no pudo ir por que estaban en cierre con Tv y Novelas, aunque dudo que haya sido por eso con Paty ahí, Martha Figueroa tambien no quiso ir por Paty y Sergio, y Rene Franco quien canceló de última hora por que se anda mudando.

Si bien a mi me pareció fabuloso que Sergio reapareciera, y en W Radio luego de los últimos chismes que apuntan a que La Taquilla podría irse a esta estación, la verdad es que el hecho de que Paty Chapoy y Daniel Bisogno estuvieran en un programa de una radiodifusora de Televisa es más impactante y me parece perfecto.

El programa estuvo sensacional, la verdad es que Paty Chapoy conoce el tema perfectamente y tiene toda la experiencia del mundo en los espectáculos, Sergio Zurita es un genio y tuvo varias puntadas muy buenas, pero definitivamente Daniel Bisogno se llevó el programa con sus ocurrencias, y miren que Daniel no es santo de mi devoción, pero es muy chistoso. Martha Debayle me cae muy muy bien, aparte de que me late un buen, y los programas de los viernes son muy buenos ya que decidió que este día lo iba a dedicar a temas más relajados, a veces pone música que no se transmite mucho en la radio, a veces tiene temas como de chistes o albures, o cualquier cosa mucho más tranquila siempre con invitados muy buenos con experiencia en el tema a tratar.

Sergio comentó que La Taquilla salió por cuestiones de lana con el departamento de ventas de MVS y había una relación ya desgastada. Por último aseguró que La Taquilla iba a regresar en alguna estación.

Radio Cardiff began broadcasting on October 8th 2007, providing local news and information with music  featuring reggae, soul, jazz, funk and house music.

The station reportedly blames the closure on a delay in funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and Cardiff County Council.

For the first time in almost 25 years, a Russian acrobatic troupe will perform again in the United States later this summer.

The Farting Midgets -- known worldwide as simply the "FMs" -- will tour the United States from late July through mid-September. They will perform in ten major U.S. cities, including New York, Detroit, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

The FMs are especially popular with young children and grown men, both of whom find the midgets' trademark flatulence highly amusing. Each performing midget is between three and three and a half feet tall and is capable of farting throughout the entire two-hour show. The FMs perform various acrobatic farting tricks, such as the Self-propelled Somersault, the Human Flamethrower and the Gunpowderless Cannon Launch.

The troupe's last U.S. show was held in New York City in the summer of 1984. During that performance, one of the midgets passed near a man in the audience smoking a cigarette and a fire broke out. Spectators were evacuated and the rest of the show was canceled. The resulting bad publicity made it difficult for the FMs to work in the U.S., so the troupe focused on performing in other countries instead.

But now change is in the air in the U.S., and the FMs are once again welcome here. And although the original FM troupe members retired seven years ago, their replacements have been highly-trained and their fartistry is reputed to be second to none.

The FMs are: Troupe leader Boris "The Divine Wind" Fedorov, Ivan "Cheese Cutter" Alekseev, Dmitry "SBD" Ivanov, Pavel "Air Biscuit" Titoy, Sergey "Sulfurous Egg" Mihailov, Nikolay "Duck Step" Petrov and female troupe member Anna Gorbachova. Gorbachova does not fart during the show, but her nearby Doberman Pinscher dog does.

The Folly Pogs Dinner and Fun evening will take place on Friday 12th September, from 6.30pm at the Chichester Park Hotel, West Sussex, UK.

Tickets are £30 and you can book tables of 10 or 12 in order to sit with a group of friends.
