Finding Credit is a nightmare, large companies are taking longer to pay their bills and the cost of fuel is having a massive impact on the profits.

But small business owners will not go down without a fight, we have all had to work very hard to get to where we are now, and we won't give up to the credit crunch without a fight.

The government has always encouraged us to grow our businesses as big and fast as we can, and obviously to do so we use money in the form of over drafts or loans from the banks. The bank mangers are now in a very tricky position, they still have achieve their monthly targets to achieve, but are thawrted by not being able to lend us the money we need.  All businesses, large and small are finding it hard to renew overdrafts, and this isn't simply something that affects the traditional retail businesses usually hit during a recession, but also the business usually "untouched" by hard trading times such as accountants, solicitors and even GP Practices.

However, its not all gloomy news. According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), entrepreneurs and small business owners are proving resilient in the face of tough economic conditions, are even finding new ways to turn a profit, despite a shrinking credit market.

If you haven't already started thinking about how you will get though this credit crunch then its time you did, this isn't a time to be burying your head in the sand. So here are five very helpful tips that may help you.

  1. If not already, then join the Federation of Small Business (FSB), as a small business this is the organisation that speaks out for you, lobbying and publicising.  In times such as this, with the banks screaming for billions of pounds, small businesses need to stick together and shot together so that they have a voice that can be heard.   Additionally, member benefits such as protections from employment tribunals and legal advice regarding collection of money from customers can give you peace of mind against unexpected bills and stressful situations which in times such as this may hit your business harder than normal.  The cost of being a member starts at £100 a year, most of which many business can recouperate in the first year from saving on member discounts with credit card processing alone.
  2. Keep a close eye on you cash flow, get your invoices out as soon as you can and if you are delivering goods direct to your customers offer a little extra discount for COD. The companies that take a long time to pay their bills can be a real pain, and chasing them for overdue money can be soul destroying.  Some of these companies may be large, high profile companies, but you have to ask yourself are they really worth the time and heartache, and more importantly is there a worthwhile profit at the end of it, after you have taken into account the cost of the sometimes 90days credit that have taken from you. Some times its better to let someone else have the grief. We also recommend that you always do a credit check on all new customers and agreeing clear credit terms up front, even perhaps taking a deposit, it could cost you a lot of money or your business if you don't.
  3. The costs of running a business today is very high, so you need to look at where you can make savings in every part of your business. But before you start sit down with the last years accounts, go though them work out what has become more expensive and how to reduce your overheads. Remember not to cut the quality of your product or service unless you are doing this as part of a change in strategy, and changing your marketing and pricing. You may consider moving to a smaller premises or subletting some of your existing space. If you are considering redundancies make sure that you do it the legal way, remember if your a member of the FSB they will help advice you.  Combine trips, meetings etc, make weekly chart for the office for all your deliveries etc, so that you and your staff make necessary journey only, its all about saving fuel and time.  And finally take a look at your fixed costs.   Many businesses don't regulary review this because after all fixed is fixed.  However, in times like these it's sometimes useful to go back to that blank piece and paper and work from nothing upwards.  What do you really need in order to carry out your business today?  Just because something has always been done in a particular manner it doesn't mean that that you need to keep doing it that way.  Times such as these are good opportunities to look at your business from a different perspective.
  4. Focus on keeping your customers. When Finances are uncertain, consumers cut unnecesserey spending. So do all you can to keep your customers coming through the door. Small discounts, loyalty schemes and regular communication are just three ways of letting your customers know you value them. Customer service is very important, they appreciate suppliers that give that extra service for their money, especially when times are hard. Good service, fast delivery and flexible payment terms can help persuade people to spend with you rather than a competitor. Just go that extra mile.
  5. Marketing your business can be a real nightmare, there is the risk that your full page advert in the local paper just becomes lost in a paper full of other full page adverts all screaming out "special offer".  It's time to think about new and novel ways of advertising, and the best thing is that "novel" needn't always be expensive.  For example In-game product placement is becoming a one of the fast growing forms of advertising, game players spend traditionally twice as long on the internet as any other user, and adverts get twice the average branding and exposure per advert.  Also gamers are a very chatty and connected group of people, and word of mouth and recommendations are always the best form of advertising.  After all, what could be better than using in-game product placement to advertise your business, pitching it in exactly the right context.  Because this is such a new and exciting form of marketing, rates can be cheap and deals can be found,

]]> <![CDATA[The Little Things]]> http://twobitsonlife.wordpress.com/?p=57 Thu, 02 Oct 2008 20:17:16 +0000 twobitsonlife http://twobitsonlife.wordpress.com/2008/10/02/the-little-things/ My roommate is not the most athletic/coordinated guy in the world and has no professional sports aspirations but I noticed something, he is crazily flexible.  Now for someone like me, who is playing basketball in college, I wondered how he has the flexibility that I've tried to obtain for years now with no luck.  Of course I've gotten increasingly flexible overtime but not to the extent that my roommate is with seemingly no effort involved.  So I got to thinking, how is it that we lose our flexibility when you see any baby completely fold in half when he/she gets too tired to support their own body weight?  I've come to the conclusion that probably won't be surprising or groundbreaking, but we are LAZY.  When you think about it we mostly lose our flexibility because it can be tough to keep our bodies in positions that requires flexibility, such as sitting straight up or bending over to tie our shoes.  This action of my roommate kissing his knees in order to tie his shoes showed me my own lazy habit of sitting or squatting down to do the same task, which requires less physical strain.  These are the little things that have developed into habits, after a period of time, hurt us physically.  Therefore my goal and what I ask of you is to notice the little things in life that can help to better a person physically or mentally.  I would love to hear about any suggestions about these habits.

Monday - P.E Run 6.6 km, not thaaat hard, an everyday thing.
Wednesday - Schoolrun Run 6 km, a little harder, cause it was hot.
Thursday - P.E Intervalpractice, HARD. Interval is not my thing.

But guess who's gotten flexible? ME! I noticed it during the stretch after the interval, my legs just *phoff* went forwards and backwards and I'm not sure what it's called, but it's a cool thing to do.

Now it's weekend, and I get to sleep so much and eat and hang out and just BE.
I'm right now on the countryside, where my dad lives. Here we grow our own lettuce. Or here Erikas brother grows his own lettuce. But I went there to get some, and a HUGE, creepy spider crawled out of the leaves and scared the shit out of me!
But either way, I got a textmessage from Alva, who's in Mallorca right now, and apparently she's been robbed on both her passport and all of her money! So she said that she might not make it back til' monday, how HORRIBLE isn't that? I know that it's really common, but still, I would freak out. I hope she's not forced to live there and start a new life as Señorita Alva. If that's even a name suitable for Mallorca..

Omg, I have to give you the link to this one xD She's a bit sad that the book Breaking Dawn is over.

As I began assessing the WHY factor I also began thinking through the WHAT factor. What exactly am I looking for in a new business? What are the features most important to me? The WHY factor has been incredibly helpful in determining the WHAT. Following is a list of those things I determined to be essential in launching a new online business.

 

My WHAT List

  • Ethical and Honest: This is HUGE and cannot be overlooked in my estimation. I consider myself a man of integrity and have always tried to live in an honest manner. So the business must be ethical. Interestingly enough the internet is overpopulated with a number of unethical, dishonest and outright corrupt businesses.
  • Simple: Notice I did not say ‘easy’ as I am not really looking for a lazy business. I do not mind putting in the effort but it does need to be simple to execute. I do not have the time to go through a ton of initial training just to be able to begin the business. Again, I am very much into learning and very open to training, but the initial learning curve must not be too steep or I will not be able to dedicate the time and energy to get it off the ground. Also, I want to be able to give the business to my wife as a gift so I want it to be simple for her to operate.
  • Training and Support: This may seem inconsistent with what I just stated above but here I am speaking of ongoing training and support. I would like to find a business where I can rely on some support or training from others who are more experienced. This may or may not be an actual part of the business… I really am not interested in something like a traditional franchise. I may have to find this support outside of the business but at the least I want to start a business in an industry that has some type of association or group that I could tap into and from which I could learn and grow.
  • Efficient: This is a biggie as my time is very limited. Between being a husband, a daddy to six great kids and a minister (basically on-call 24/7), I do not have a whole lot of leftover time. Again, I am willing to put in the effort but the business must allow me to use the little time I have as efficiently as possible. This is why I looked to an internet-based business. I am confident I can use the internet to leverage my time and thus be a lot more productive. So I am looking for a business that will allow me to do just that – leverage my time.
  • Flexible: I love the fact that my life is fresh and different everyday… I never know exactly what I will face on any given day. Because my schedule is different day-to-day, I need a business that allows me to work when it fits best into my schedule – often that will be late at night, when the kids are in bed or early in the morning when I can get a jump on the day. I also travel, both with my family and for ministry, so the business would need to be able to survive without me right there every moment or, at least allow me to check in on it via the web. This is yet another reason why I turned to the idea of an online business.
  • Low Startup Costs: I know every business requires not only the investment of time and energy but also the investment of some capital. However, I am not in a position to invest a lot of money right now. I am prepared to invest in setting up the legal structure of the business, investing in the business itself and the marketing that will be needed – but I need to keep all of that to an absolute minimum… say initially a few hundred bucks or less. Not much but that is reality for me right now.
  • Quickly into Profit: Hear me carefully: I am NOT looking for a get-rich-quick business… those pie in the sky companies that tell you your mailbox will be stuffed with $100 bills by next Tuesday. That being said, I am most definitely looking for a business that will turn a profit relatively quickly. I did not say it had to be a huge profit, but I would like to reach my initial goal of giving the business to my wife as a gift – allowing her to stop working outside the home – in the near future. I cannot spin my wheels but I am very willing to turn those wheels, gain some traction and move into profit. I am interested in re-investing my profits and will be looking for a business that is easily expanded and developed.
  • Passive Income: I guess you might say that several of the above points would naturally lead to a business that generates a passive income – that is, producing income even when I am not sitting at the computer typing away or working on it in some other capacity. The internet lends itself to this as people can log on anytime, day or night, from anywhere. I am looking for a business that can engage those potential customers via the website, generating leads and closing sales.
  • Fun and Interesting: It cannot be boring or it just won’t happen, right? Easy enough. Now, it may not be the most fun and exciting business, but I at least want to get a little kick out of it.

 

I think that about covers it for WHAT I am seeking in launching a new business online. The only real question is: Will I ever find HOW to get my WHAT that will lead to my WHY?

 

So, HOW is the next big question. What business will give me the HOW?

And the HOW question is exactly what the BizLaunchBlog is going to answer… that’s the plan anyway.  So buckle up and hold on for the ride!
