Nokia released it first s60 5th edition device: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. What's cool is that S60 5th Edition continues to support Flash Lite 3.0, with the addition of ActionScript extensions to take advantage of S60 Platform Services. These extensions provide access to:

The application manager.

Calendar records.

Contacts records.

Log information.

SMS and MMS messaging.

The media gallery.

Device location.

Landmarks.

System information.

Sensors.

These new APIs enable Flash Lite developers to access device-application data, such as that held in Calendar and Contacts, as well as information on a device’s location.
Together, the UI- and platform-access enhancements will enable Flash Lite developers to create a completely new breed of context-aware applications and services that provide users with information unique to their own experiences.”

For those who migh have missed the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic leaks, the first S60 touchscreen handset packs a 3.2" screen of the exciting widescreen resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. A 3.2 megapixel autofocus shooter and VGA video at 30 fps are the imaging assets. There's quad-band GSM support and 3G with HSDPA. Some of the other extras include: GPS, 3.5mm standard audio jack, TV-out and a microSD card slot. An ambitious music offering, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will come with 8GB microSD card in the retail package and stereo surround speakers.

During yesterday’s “Town Hall meeting”, at FOTB08, a panel of Adobeans was ready to answer any questions that would come up.

One of the questions everyone asks all the time is when we will see the Flash Player running on the iPhone. Paul Betlem, Sr. Director of Engineering, answered the question by repeating what they’ve been saying for a few months now. We can notice how many people picked up on his answer and how many people see it as the confirmation of Flash on the iPhone. This is what Paul said:

Adobe is committed to bringing Flash Player to the iPhone. While the development work has begun, we can’t share more details at this point. It is important to note that we do need to work with Apple beyond what is available through the SDK, its emulation environment and the current license around it to bring the full capabilities of Flash to the iPhone. We think Flash availability on the iPhone benefits the millions of joint Apple and Adobe customers, and we want to work with Apple to bring these capabilities to the device.

source: Serge Jespers

John Gruber picked it up and shared a very interesting thought on this topic. You can read the whole article here. John basically says the following:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Apple will not publish a Flash player for the iPhone unless and until there exists some other mobile phone that (a) does run Flash, and (b) starts taking sales away from the iPhone. Which, my guess is, means never. Apple has no motivation to allow it. If Adobe really wants to get Flash on the iPhone, they should shut up about the iPhone and start talking about and coding for Android. An excellent implementation of Flash for Android would give Adobe some amount of actual leverage. Until then, Adobe’s just embarrassing themselves every time they mention it.

I think John is right, altough he does not have to talk about Android alone I think. I discussed this today with my colleague Wim Vanhenden and we both believe that if Nokia can provide a touchscreen device with the same capabilities as the n95 and a higher/nicer user experience combined with acceptable mobile browsing they can compete with the iphone by adding a flash player. If Adobe would develop a flash player for android as well, I agree with John, saying Apple could be motivated to publish a flash player on the iphone. Let's wait and see how it turns out.

Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe has already stated this publicly. But the news seem to get a ton of buzz with the announcements made at Flash On The Beach conference. If Apple approves Adobe's Flash-Player-for-iPhone efforts, iPhone could go Flash enabled pretty soon.

Flashmagazine reports quoting Paul Betlem( Sr. Director of Engineering at Adobe) :

"The Adobe team is working on Flash on the iPhone, but it's a closed platform. He noted that Apple makes all the decisions."

The new player will be the "missing product in the middle" between Flash Player and Flash Lite.According to AppleInsider, Adobe is planning to distribute the new player through Apple's App store.

T-Mobile unveiled yesterday G1 - the first phone ever to be powered by the new Google mobile op

T-Mobile unveiled yesterday G1 - the first phone ever to be powered by the new Google mobile operating system Android. This new mobile OS by Google is a threat to other mobile OSes such as Symbian, Windows Mobile, and even the iPhone as it is backed by the Open Handset Alliance (Includes HTC, Motorola, Samsun, LG, T-Mobile, and others), it is almost fully open source, it is integrated with many of the Google apps and services such as Gmail, Calendar, and Maps, and it features an online application store.

The question raised by many Flash developers is “what about Flash Lite?”. The Android SDK is available for anyone to develop applications for it for free, there are no restrictions whatsoever on what kind of application you can develop, and anyone can install any application they wish - This is unlike the iPhone SDK which prohibit developing any ‘runtime’ and applications can only be installed through iTunes.

Bill Parry, a developer at Adobe, made a post on his blog saying that Adobe is “closely working” with Android licensees and that in the future “Android based devices will ship with Adobe Flash support”. Bill also says that the movement of Flash into more mobile devices is part of Adobe’s Open Screen Project.

This is surely good news for Flash Lite developers, especially as no signs can be seen for releasing Flash Lite on the iPhone even after the recent release of second version of the OS and even though reports were published three months ago about Adobe successfully running Flash Lite on the iPhone through emulation.

Flash Lite is currently available on Symbian and Windows Mobile, and according to Adobe it is available on 800 million devices shipped worldwide.

As a heavy user of various Google apps, I am very excited about Android, and the inevitable release of Flash on it will surely improve the chances of me getting an Android powered phone in the near future.

The last couple of weeks there has been a nice evolution going on in the flash lite scene. Flash Lite developers are capable of using tools to package their content now more than ever. If you are not familiar with packaging, according to Bill Perry it comes down to this:

What's "packaging"?
Packaging is a term used in mobile development to describe the process for gathering and compressing files together into a specific file format that's then interpreted by a device. Once on the device the package can be installed and/or launched. In the mobile space there are several packaging formats for different mobile platforms:

* Symbian = .SIS
* Windows Mobile = .CAB
* Java applications = .JAR
* Nokia Series 40 = .NFL

I made a little overview of tools you can use to easily get started packaging your content:

1) SWF2GO

SWF2Go Professional enables you to create rich, powerful and engaging Flash Lite applications rapidly by combining the power of Python for S60 and Net60.

Making professional class deployment packages is now one-click operation with new redesigned and friendlier user interface.

2) KUNERI LITE

KuneriLite is an innovative Rapid Application Development toolkit to extend Flash Lite capabilities and create great-looking S60 applications without any Symbian knowledge. KuneriLite helps you to create great-looking S60 applications faster, easier and cheaper. KuneriLite provides a common, reusable and user friendly platform for you. They have also released an online packaging tool called Kuneri SWF Pack which you can use, cross platform which is great for mac users, to create signed sis file online in 3 seconds! A very cool initiative!

3 SWF2JAR

The Swf2Jar 1.0 tool automatically packages together a jar containing a Java MIDlet class and a Flash file (.swf). The simplest Project Capuchin application is to package existing Flash Lite content in a MIDlet jar file which applies Java security, distribution methods and installation. Check out Mark's blog for more detailed information.

4) JARPA

Recently, a new generation of mobile phones with support for Java ME and Flash Lite has been taking widespread acceptance by the market opening the door for hybrid applications. Looking for this business potential Jarpa was created allowing Flash Lite Developers deliver their content as Java ME applications. I created a getting started tutorial a while ago, feel free to check it out.

4) Nokia NFL Packaging

Forum Nokia released their "NFL" spec for packaging Flash Lite content for supported Nokia Series 40 devices. The easiest way to think of the .NFL file format is it's a .ZIP file that's renamed to .NFL and contains at least one .SWF file, a bitmap file for the icon and a descriptor file (.INF). If the Flash Lite content also requires additional .SWF or other media files they can be included in the package as long as the information is listed in the descriptor file. Go and check out Bill's blog fore a more detailed look on this type of packaging

That's all Folks! Feel free to leave a comment telling me what's your experience on this topic and which tools you use prefer!

Flash on Mobile Devices surpassed Flash on Desktop according to Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen:

"We are shipping Flash on more mobile devices than on PCs. We ship more than 800 million on devices. We expect that to hit 1 billion. We hope we can create the next generation of innovation. We hope that you will join us. If we do that together as an industry, everyone wins. The carriers, the handset manufacturers and creative professionals all win, and so do the consumers."

Earlier this year, Adobe had stated they were estimated to make 1 billion devices by 2009. My guess is that they will reach this amount of devices without a doubt. According to Alessandro's post a while ago, saying 90% of these non-pc devices are smartphones, this means that in few months there will be more Flash Lite enabled phones then Flash on computers! Quite an amazing conclusion in my honest opinion.

I recently updated a Flash project (Stock Tracker) and thought I would post it for your review. It i

I recently updated a Flash project (Stock Tracker) and thought I would post it for your review. It is a rather simple stock tracking application that takes advantage of one of my favorite Flash capabilities SharedObject. SharedObject gives you the ability to store text based data on a device. There are a number of things to keep in mind when you use SharedObjects for one the device ultimately may decide to purge the data at which point you will need to have a contingency plan to deal with that issue. I use SharedObjects to store the stock symbols that are entered by the user as well as the last stock information downloaded to the device. This gives the user the ability to see the last stock information even if they lost their connection to the network. I will provide a link to download the swf (e.g. compiled application) at the end of this short article. I provide this application as is with no warranty or support. It is also not something that I want anyone to resell. With that said I hope that you find it interesting. For the most part it is a single screen application. In other words you enter the stock symbols on the same screen that you display the stock information. There are other screens for instance when you first run the application it will ask you to enter an update interval. This should be a one time setup that determines how often the application will attempt to fetch stock data from the network. There is a menu item that allows you to change that interval if you desire. It should go with out saying that setting a lower interval will increase your data bill if you do not have an unlimited plan. The following is the primary screen that will allow you to enter a stock symbol and review stock data.

[caption id="attachment_58" align="alignnone" width="242" caption="Screen Shot of Stock Tracker"][/caption]

The Menu softkey gives you access to a little help (very little), changing the update interval, quitting the application and an about screen. Other than that what you see above represents the entire application. You will notice when you enter stock symbols and successfully retrieve information about those stocks an arrow will appear behind the stock information. The arrow simply represents the overall change in all of the stocks entered. In other words if the change is positive the arrow is green and pointing up. If the change is negative well I think you can figure it out. Just a quick note on installation, there is none. I have not rolled this into a sis file as yet. You will need to use Nokia PC Suite to move it to the device. Because there is a security sandbox you will need to place the swf file on the devices storage not the memory card and you will need to place it in a directory called Trusted (“c:\Data\Others\Trusted”). Of course you will also need the FlashLite runtime, you can find the developer edition on Adobe Labs. I have only tested this on an N95. If there are enough requests to support a different screen size I will do my best to make that happen.

I hope you find it interesting, I would appreciate any comments and suggestions.

Download Example

When you get to the login page use the guest login and just enter your first and last name. If you see a password field click the guest radio button.

This weekend Leuven is organising their annual Marktrock Festival. One of Belgium's biggest Telecom player Telenet organised a whole viral campaign for this event called ''crowdsurf hero''. People could win VIP-Tickets by playing the online crowdsurf hero game, made by our Flash Team who did a great job btw!

Telenet also wanted to implement a mobile part into their viral and after seeing our Rock Werchter Guide they wanted this concept for Marktrock as well. I created Marktrock Mobile for them, a basic Mobile Festival Guide providing the entire Marktrock Schedule, some info about a MMS - contest at the festival etc..

I also ported it again using the B.Tween framework from barefootsoft so people with an iphone can use it too! I'm glad to see that a Belgian Company finally adds a decent mobile value to a viral campaign! This time no wallpaper or ringtone crap like Humo tried to pull off at Rock Werchter ( from what I heard it was not really a succes ).

You can check out more info on the mobile app at telenet.be/marktrockmobile

1. Add loud and annoying sound effects to your game
2. Don’t add sound control options so we have to listen to your loud and annoying sound effects
3. Make your game ridiculously hard
4. Have a confusing menu system
5. Forget to embed all of your dynamic textfields
6. Don’t optimize your code
7. Add a bunch of cool effects that require lots of processing power and slow down the gaming experience
8. Don’t fix the bugs
9. Have long animations that we can’t skip
10. Don’t give us a clear goal to beat the game
11. Add glow effects to everything
12. Make confusing controls
13. Make the instructions all text with no explanatory pictures/diagrams
14. Make a storyline without graphics to explain it
15. Make it easy for us to cheat
16. Create an ugly color scheme
17. Make the text unreadable
18. Don’t let the buttons look like buttons, we’ll obviously find them very easily
19. Don’t fix the typos
20. Very repetitive game-play
21. Don’t let us pause the game
22. Add pointless features that add a lot of file size
23. Make a really long menu system
24. Make us have to navigate through the entire menu system after we lose the game
25. Camouflage the enemies so we can’t see them until we randomly begin losing health or lose the game
26. Don’t put rollOver functions onto your buttons
27. Make game-play really slow
28. Make loss inevitable
29. Don’t put in a scoring system. We don’t want to know how well we did
30. Make stupid computer AI
31. Make the description of the game really short or really obscure
32. Design a game-play that has been exploited by multiple game designers before
33. Design graphics that have an uneven quality when seen on a mobile screen
34. When run on multiple devices, game scales non uniformly showing objects off screen
35. Don’t worry about rectifying text that looks blurred
36. Advanced levels with really short and easy game-play
37. Don’t let us change game options like sound control and quality during a game-play
38. A bad copy of a popular game
39. A cluttered HUD (Heads-Up Display)
40. Game which are not self explanatory, makes me want to refer to help even after starting playing the game

Of course, these are just guidelines; there may be exceptions to items in the list depending on a particular piece of content
