Good news for norwegian skiers (as well as skiers from the rest of the world searching a new place where the powder is still untracked). Five small powder resorts in the northwest for Fjord Norway have created a ski region - where one pass gives access to all the lifts. It is available from the 2008/2009-season on. And to warn you: We are talking small-scale, draglift, no-fancy-restaurant style resort, where you get the very essentials of skiing - good powder snow, nice terrain and good people - and basically nothing else. The new skipass is called "Alpepasset" - and for those of you that read subtitles in big international ski movies may recognize places such as Strandafjellet, Stryn and Fjellsetra. The "Get Lucky" ski movie from Field Productions contains a bonus track from Strandafjellet - worth checking out. The Sunnmøre Alps mountain region is amazing also for ski touring and winter climbing, and the best winter surf of Europe is only two hours away - at Hoddevika, Stadlandet. The only question is: When will it start snowing?

On Friday night, Mr. Snow and I discovered our favourite fish restaurant in Oslo. With informal but attentive and friendly service, Restaurant Fjord beat the socks off Solsiden, also food-wise. It's a good-looking place as well, and someone must have had lots of fun designing the walrus-tusk chandeliers (only in Norway, I tell you).

The restaurant operates on a menu that changes weekly, you can choose from a three-, four- or five-course meal. East-West fusion is definitely on the menu, but does not seem to cross continents too violently in a single course. For example, the halibut and pollack mains were grounded firmly in their root vegetable puree and French sauce tradition, but both dishes also had a lightness that does not come easily.

The Salma sashimi starter on the other hand was clearly Asian, with reduced soya sauce (or possibly Marmite?!) for dipping. I was also thrilled to bite into an old favourite, salt and pepper fried prawns, or the Cantonese yim kok ha, on the same plate. Celebrity chef-owner Ole Jonny Eikefjord alludes to China as a source of inspiration in this article, so no surprise perhaps. Next time, even with shell on?

It's hard to go wrong with chocolate and berry desserts, and Mr. Snow reported full satisfaction with his cheese platter. So if anything (and just to be picky), I would point only to the fennel and mussel soup as the odd one out on the night's menu. The mussels were fine, but the breaded scallop tragically too tough (good try on textures though). Also, the horseradish (and/or mustard?) overpowered the dish. But overall, only a small blip on a horizon of delicate, balanced flavours.

Must go, if you love fish. And actually, even if you don't.

I realized that My Year Online hasn't focused enough on food, given what a big part of (my) life it is. So, more on the places that have filled my belly and made it sing this year coming up!

A landslide has blocked access to Milford Sound for an estimated four days. Unfortunately that was today's intended destination. Fortunately Cam was able to call round and get us seats for a trip to Doubtful Sound. Not many people get a chance to visit because of it's remoteness.

The day started with a two hour drive to Lake Manapouri where we caught a boat across to the hydro-electric power plant. We were taken a few hundred metres underground to the power station which produces 14% of New Zealand's electricity, through a series of man-made tunnels linking the lake to to fjord below.

We drove along the isolated road built purely in support of the powerstation's construction - and New Zealand's most expensive road per mile.

We left our bus at the point the power station's exit tunnels meet the fjord named Doubtful Sound. Here we took a cruiser for a long tour of the fjord and out to the sea. At one point we pulled under a waterfall so we could catch and drink some of the freshly fallen water.

The day was wet and misty. This region has some of the heaviest rainfall in the world - up to 12 metres per year. This rain creates hundreds of temporary waterfalls since the mountains offer nowhere for water to accumulate.

As a fjord the mountain walls were carved by glaciers, resulting in sheer faces reaching 1000 feet at some points. The deepest section is 462 metres.

We travelled back using two buses and two boats. We finally reached our hotel after 8pm for a quick meal and bed ready for a 6am wake-up call!

Figured i would just put up some screens of each of the new instances and the easiest way to get to them. Starting with Utgarde Keep. Utgarde Keep is located in the howling Fjord. You can see the front of the instance directly from the ship coming in or from Valgarde the first starting city. The portal to the instance is right through the front entrance in the screen shot and straight down the hall way. The Graveyard is VERY close making this a very easy to run dungeon even if you wipe alot lol.

There are two ways to get to northrend. The first is in the wetlands. You get on the boat on the far right dock. One of the new steam ships picks you up and takes you to the Howling Fjord. The boat ride is very epic feeling it is by far the longest boat ride in the game. And this is a shot of were you land.

The other path to northrend is from stormwind harbor. This one is kinda confusing there are a ton of docks and ships in the brand new harbor. Since menithal harbor now takes you to northrend instead of auberdine you now reach auberdine from storm wind harbor. The farthest dock will take you to the Borean Tundra. The Borean tundra doesnt feel nearly as epic but is also a good starting area.

Dear Sunwatchers,

As we near the time of change of season, summer is making every effort, with the help of our big friend, to leave us with the summer memories we cherish most of warmth and brightness.

[caption id="attachment_104" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Clouds in wheel formation over mountains of Indian Arm"][/caption]

Our friend is even playing with the patterns of the clouds to remind us of turning and change. Speaking of change, my favourite sign-sighting of the last few days is: "Do you fear change? Then, leave it with us.". No, this is not an election slogan but the sign on the "tip" jar at a coffee shop where I, uncharacteristically, stopped to buy an iced coffee the other day.

I posted a pathway earlier in the season. Here's one I took on Monday.

[caption id="attachment_105" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="The "Path" leads up Indian Arm, our local fjord"][/caption]

And to complete another series, here's what the tourists were seeing on Sunday, the 7th, at Stanley Park:

[caption id="attachment_106" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Stanley Park Totem Poles"][/caption]

This was a better day than that one two weeks before!! See previous post.

Sunrise today was at 6:42. The sun set at 19:36. There are still pleasantly long evenings especially on these days filled with the work of our big friend. A fine month, September!!

I am enjoying my tomato harvest each day. It's not as good a harvest as the last three years. The weather was too wild for the poor little dears early in the season. However, they are ripening very beautifully on these sunny days. George used to take up his tomato plants, which he had in a glass house, at the end of September. We are doing well. I continued to harvest tomatoes until Remembrance Day last year. Now, that's on my balcony of course.

I'm surprised at how little fog we've had so far. Lots of dew but very little fog. I suppose it will come later in the season. I'm also pleased to report that, so far, there is very little colour in the trees. Now, I hope for that to magically change as I journey to higher elevations next week for some photo taking. I'm testing the means of transportation in the Lower Mainland, ship, helicopter and train. So far, so good.

I trust that this finds you well and enjoying the sun and the fruits of her labour whether from your own garden or those of the farmers of B.C. and Washington. Speaking of which, I am really into B.C. cheeses these days. Yum! Tiger Blue, and, now I see why I like it, double cream camembert. Guess that one shouldn't be repeated! They are both from Poplar Grove in Penticton. Excellent. Not that I'm beginning a food column. Just touting the products of our region and our big friend in the sky. I actually thought they were both from the island cheese makers. But Penticton is the winner in my taste tests so far. The place I was taken into exile when we left B.C. was a great cheese-making area, with a cheese factory in almost every tiny village. My mother was in heaven since she loved fresh curds. We were able to get them from the factory whenever we chose. I think the owners were some of "ours". My one great aunt was always making a detour to her favourite factory, in Forfar, (a name I always found amusing), whenever she drove out from Ottawa. Those days passed when Kraft began taking them over or buying the milk quotas or making changes the details of which I now forget. I wonder if that area has a new wave of local makers.

Speaking of olden days, my next scheduled adventure is on a train. I love trains and have been plotting rides for a long time. They were a major feature of my life until I moved back to B.C. twenty years ago. My last train trip was on the Toronto Montreal run twenty years ago. Ironic that I associated trains more with B.C. but have not been on one since I moved back here.

I may do some entries about ice melts, glacier calving and the like. If you don't want to read those, please don't! I'm finding the information flow in the regular media annoying. One catches a tidbit and then there is no context and no follow up. These matters and other matters geological/geographical interest me. Perhaps you too. I know it goes beyond sun watching and becomes more about earth watching. However, I will label the entries, should they actually appear in more than my imagination. The labels will guide your reading. I figure if I do the research for my own sake, I might as well share it.

Until next time, I remain your friend and bulletineer,

Daphne

Enjoy the sunshine!!

Dear Friends,

As you may know, my work is featured on little website called FJORD [ http://fjordphoto.org ]. If you are not familiar, The FJORD Collective showcases 60 or so up and coming photographers whose work is prominently featured on the internet. Eventually, the plan is to create a book to showcase these photographers and their work, thus expanding their audience and also changing the way in which their work is viewed.

I am pleased to report that FJORD is in the running for the Photography Book Now awards in which the winner gets $25,000 to complete a project of their choosing. Aside from the main contest, they have recently announced a new category, the People's Choice Awards.

We (FJORD) are asking for your vote for the new category. The prize has yet to be announced, but we figure all of the attention we can get is good attention in regards to the publication of the FJORD book project.

Only Blurb registered users can vote and everyone gets one vote only. If you do not have an account it takes only but a minute to create one. Please vote for FJORD here:

Western Brook Pond is a must do when in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, Canada. It is now a fresh water fjord created by Glaciers some time ago. In some ways it was unfortunate that the fog had rolled in right over the Fjord and only decided to lift as we drove home. But I count myself lucky to have seen it in this light and now have it on my list to do again one day in the sun.

...

1: FJORD ENTRANCE

...

1: WATERFALL This waterfall is buried deep in the innermost part of the fjord. My photos don't convey the height of Fjord walls very well but this waterfall plunged off the cliff and turned to midst before it hit the rocks or water below. I am of the notion a waterfall is a waterfall but this is a waterfall! The waterfall is on the right top cliff.

The low clouds made the trip a dark and moody experience. The rocks loomed above us and our guide told us stories of rockfall and tsunami like waves inside the fjord. Knowing their was really no escape I decided to play with my exposures so I capture that feeling...just in case we made it out.

...

A lesser, but beautiful in its own right, waterfall.

...

1: HIKERS We picked up hikers that had just finished a hike and dropped off the hikers that were about to undertake the Traverse. We were told they would not let you off the boat without a permit or a guide.

Details on the excursion:
We drove about 1.5 hours from Humber Valley Resort to the beginning of the walk into the Fjord. We were told to allow 45 minutes for the walk. We arrived a little late and for fear of missing the boat (which was prepaid and booked from the resort) we walked very fast and did it in 0.5hr. It's a low level walk on mostly boardwalks over marsh, very easy for families to do. The boat tour is 2.5 hours and costs $45/person.

If you are really adventurous you can do a 4 day Long Range Traverse Hike that will start at the end of the Fjord. You'll hike up the valley and I can only imagine the incredible view once you reach the top. Maybe one day I'll find myself there.

One member of our group came back to the ship in the afternoon with murder in her eyes after her "best" friend, who lives in Arizona, had talked her in to walking the whole way (she is used to NW weather). Although today's forecast called for sunny weather with a high of 78 degrees, by mid afternoon it was in the high 80's to low 90's. There were shuttle buses from the city center, but the fare was $5USD.

Welcome to Oslo, Norway

"Founded in 1050 by King Harold Hardrade, Oslo is a city abounding in ancient history and present day interest, but very little of the early city remains. Duke Erik of Sweden attacked the heart of what was the ancient city, "Alershus Fortress," only 10 years after it was built in 1310. Subsequently, it was besieged by Christian II of Denmark n 1531-1532 and by the Swedes again in 1537 and 1716, when Sweden was trying to win back Norway from Danish control. Periodically plagued by fire, the old wooden city was completely destroyed by a devastating fire in 1624. All of these reasons explain why there is a scarcity of old buildings in the city today. King Christian IV (the Danish ruler of Norway) rebuilt the town about one mile west of the original site, bringing it closer to the Akershus Fortress and named it Christiania. The King decreed that all buildings were to be made of brick or stone and the streets to be of uniform width.

For the next 200 years, the city progressed slowly with setbacks along the way. It was only in 1814 that Norway proclaimed independence from the Danes and Oslo began to expand. Most of the principle buildings of Oslo date back to this time, as does the increase in trade that finally brought Oslo to economic prosperity and stability. The 19th century also brought about an increase in population. Oslo's population in 1855 was 40,000 and in 1900 had jumped to 150,000. In 1905, Norway achieved total independence when King Haakon VII was crowned as the first King of Norway since the Middle Ages. Oslo is a delightful mix of old European traditions and a new younger European Union vitality." (Source: ms Rotterdam Daily Program)
Our visit

Prior to our entrance to the fjord, at sunrise, I was joined on deck by Lorin and we took pictures of the sunrise. Something special about this sunrise was it was accompanied by a "sundog". I had seen many sundogs growing up in Colorado, but this was a new phenomenon for Lorin. My research describes a sundog thusly: "A sun dog also referred to as mock sun is a colorful patch of light that is caused by the refraction of sunlight by tiny six-sided crystals of ice within the atmosphere. When the sunlight passes through the crystals of ice, it is bent by 22 degrees before reaching the eyes of the observer, thus producing a sun dog. The sun dog scientifically known as parhelion is actually an atmospheric optical phenomenon (the phenomenon involving light). A group of sun dogs are known as parhelia( meaning with the sun)." (Source
http://www.mapsofworld.com/referrals/weather/weather-illusions/sun-dog.html )

Sundog at Sunrise over the Baltic Sea

Two factors in determining whether we want to take a tour or try to "go it on our own" in the ports we have visited are the; a) arrival and departure times, and b) the distance from where the ship docks to the center of town or the main attractions. For Oslo, we chose the 3 ½ hour "Highlights of Oslo" offered by http://www.travelwithalan.com/ – our TA, Alan Schiller. The tradeoff of taking a guided tour is not having an opportunity to interact with the local population, as well as not being able to "linger" at interesting attractions and for Barbara not having the opportunity to shop in the local markets.

So, shortly after docking our group met up with our tour guide, Christina, and our tour bus driver, Trond. As Trond deftly maneuvered our "big" bus through the crowded streets of this beautifully city, Christina pointed out highlights of the new National Opera House, The town Hall and the Royal Palace and important government buildings.

Overview of the Park

Soon we arrived at Vigeland Park for a 30 minute walk through the 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and cast iron, the world's largest collections of sculptures executed by one single artist, Gustav Vigeland who lived from 1869 to 1943. His sculptures are unique in that each one portrays some aspect of all ranges of "human emotion". One of his most popular is pictured below:

"The Angry Child"

One of my favorites is what I call the "Father Juggling his Children", below.

The majority of the bronze sculptures line both sides of a bridge over a beautiful lagoon which is visible behind the "Angry Child":

At the edge of a beautiful fountain sculpture, a beautiful Norwegian Woman poses for pictures with "guests".

Leaving the park, Alan informed us that we would be taking a side trip on the way to the Viking Ship museum; The Holmenkollen Ski Museum and Tower. This venue was used in the Olympics held in Oslo in 1952. The Ski Museum in Holmenkollen, the world's oldest museum specializing in skis and the history of skiing, is situated in Holmenkollen ski jump - inside the actual jump, where visitors can experience the magnificent view of Oslo.

As we walked through the parking lot to our bus there was a Honda "Gold Wing" motorcycle club gathering. One bike of particular interest was the "family" bike pictured below. The side car contained car seats for the owner's two children. The little boy is standing next to the side car wanting to retrieve his "binky". Another interesting sight was the four or five Noregian Motorcycle Policemen who had "volunteered" to escort the Gold Wing club.

Leaving Holmenkollen we drove to our final stop for the day; The
Viking Ship Museum (Vikingskipshuset).

The Viking Ship Museum presents great Viking-ship discoveries from Gokstad, Oseberg and Tune as well as other finds from Viking tombs around the Oslo Fjord. The world's two best-preserved wooden Viking ships built in the 9th century. Small boats, sledges, cart with exceptional ornamentation. Implements, tools, harness, textiles and household utensils.

Impressions of Oslo

This is very vibrant, ambitious city. They have built one of the finest Opera Houses in the world, as bold in design as the one in Sydney, and they are in the process of rebuilding the road system along the waterfront. A plan is also currently underway to restore their waterfront to a more people friendly, livable area. They have an excellent transportation system of trains, buses, and ferries. This is another city that I would love to spend more time in if I had the money.

Drawing of Opera House

Ahh, tomorrow is a day at sea…….and our final day of cruising. This may be the last opportunity we will have to experience "rough" waters as we will be sailing in the North Sea along the west coast of Denmark.

How do you write an introduction about words? Let me rephrase that, how do your write a good introdu

How do you write an introduction about words? Let me rephrase that, how do your write a good introduction about words? Especially when you are a piss poor writer. That my friends is the million dollar question. I have been languishing over this introduction for quite some time. It's been at least three minutes and I have yet to come up with anything clever or insightful. What is there to say really? When properly used, words can get people to feel things, go places, blah, blah, blah. You know good and well what words can do otherwise you wouldn't be reading this now. Words I like make me laugh. Sometimes at other's expense and sometimes at my own. One such word is isthmus. In second grade I had the privilege of visiting the speech therapist once a week to tackle a little problem I had. My "s" sounds came out like "th" which meant isthmus sounded like ithmuth. To this day I still crack up whenever I hear this word because of my inability to pronounce it.

Oh I'm sorry, am I boring you with trivial details about my elementary education? Good. That means you've gotten a taste of another use for words. Filler when you have no actual content. Here are more words and phrases I like:

Moist - Let that soak in for a second. How does it feel? Are you offended or are you laughing? Usually the response to this word is one of the two. How can you not like a word that is really very innocent, yet has so many lewd associations? People have actually asked me to not use it around them. My reply usually has something to do with a moist towelette wiping different parts of their anatomy. Namely their eyes. What were you thinking? See. That's the power of moist.

Shoot me up the ass - Recently added to my lexicon by a friend, I truthfully don't know what this phrase means exactly. All I know is I like the way it sounded when she said it, and I laughed hysterically when I repeated it (as did the surrounding company).

Puss - Makes the list because it's similar to moist in the land of double entendre, but it has a smack of old school bite to it. Like in the sentence "He then slapped him right in the puss." Why the word Gods delight me so by giving birth to such phrases I'll never understand.

Fjord - I like how it's spelled, I like how it sounds, and I think it is the perfect length. Fjord has actually become my new catch phrase instead of using "word" as an exclamation after someone makes a statement. Example: "Roach, I look forward to seeing you at dinner tonight." "FJORD!" Try it out. You'll be amazed with how easily it just rolls off of your tongue and out your mouth.

In a cocaine heartbeat - Bill Simmons, a sportswriter for espn.com, used this term in one of his recent columns and it immediately struck a chord with me. All it means is something that happens very fast, but the imagery is priceless. What isn't funny about cocaine? Added to the fact Simmons is a die-hard Boston Celtics fan and Len Bias was a Celtic who literally died in a cocaine heartbeat. Again, what's not to like about that irony?

Normally I would summarize an entry this concise, but since I've already skated my way through the intro I'll spare you the pain. List 5 words or phrases you like.

I captured this image this morning in Lofthus, one of the major tourist destinations in Western Norway. Maybe it's just me, but I thought the sharply defined cloud layer looked very beautiful against the mountains. It clearly shows the "lifting condensation level", the exact height where the stratified air is cold enough for the water vapor in the air to condense. The picture was taken handheld with my Canon 40D and a Canon EF 24-105 f/4L lens. I used four frames of the same scene to create the panorama image in my banner.

This image is priced at $50 with SnapVillage.
