There are benefits and downsides to using separate X screens for dual screen setups vs a "large desktop" which just means the computer thinks there is one desktop, with two monitors showing the same desktop.

Separate X screens means you have an entirely different screen on each monitor. This is useful to me because I can have two SETS of workspaces on each screen. My smaller monitor to the left has 3 workspaces, the large 30" on the right has 6 screens. I keep my browser, chat, music on the left monitor, and it doesn't move no matter how much I switch around on my main screen.

With a large desktop or TwinView, you would switch both screens by switching workspaces. So having that second screen doesn't help THAT much if you already have a large main screen as you'd still need to switch around just to look on your second screen.

Anyways, FireFox complains that you an instance is already running if you try to run firefox on each screen. To get around the problem, start firefox with -P, which runs the profile selector.

Create a new profile and there you go, you have a new firefox instance running on your other screen.

From now on, just start firefox by running firefox -P.

I. Am. SO. ANGRYY. At IE. Mostly because it rejects my lovingly craft CSS (which you may not yet see, due to this very dilemma), understandably made for Firefox since that's what I use, but it also happens to reject my attempts to compromise for IE...! How unreasonable. I believe IE should die while eating ice cream, the ultimate disgrace.

After wasting so much time, trial and error, I eventualy managed to finish the final theme. The earlier 2 themes were just not looking good. It was a mistake to use bad themes for so long and than trying to make them look good. I spent way too much time in making them look good instead of just dropping them.

Now the site look way better, though I need to fix the logo thing. Geez, Opera is making it look pretty bad (though FF and IE are fine).

Goals for coming Days - Total Focus on Content.

So today I actually made use of the Latest Headlines feed in Firefox. It's a button in the bookmarks toolbar that I've probably only clicked once or twice before, because, you know, I watch the Daily Show (and read the newspaper and Time magazine). I don't consider myself to be disconnected from current events.

Ayer por la mañana tuve una crisis con en Firefox versión 2.0.0.15 portable, pues resulta que no se debido a que el firefox se cerro, pues sin darle importancia lo ejecute nuevamente, y cual es mi sorpresa al ver que todas mis contraseñas guardadas habían desaparecido, las busque por varios lugares sin ningún resultado.

Alan de Paraiso Geek y también un cuate llamado Ernesto, me ayudaron un poco vía msn, pero al final solo me dijeron "por eso se deben hacer respaldos", (creo que me dijeron pendejo XD)

pero bueno ya desesperado y después de maldecir a Firefox decidí buscar una solución, tiempo atrás en Abril realice una copia de las carpetas de firefox, el único "pero" de utilizar ese respaldo es que no tenia todas las extensiones, todos los bookmarks, ni todas las contraseñas, y fue cuando encontré esta maravillosa extensión de Firefox llamada FEBE, Firefox Extension Backup Extension, solo tuve que instalarla y actualizarla para poder llevarme todos los bookmarks y extensiones rápidamente y de un jalón, Si deben pensar por que no hizo la exportación de bookmarks y ya?? precisamente por que no necesitaba solo los bookmarks si no también extensiones, permisos, contraseñas y temas.

FEBE te permite elegir que quieres respaldar, desde una cookie, hasta las opciones del firefox, Funciona con las versiones de Firefox 1.5.x y 2.0.0.x en Windows y, a partir de la versión FEBE 4.0, Linux

Les recomiendo esta útil herramienta que no debe faltar en su Firefox, y recuerden HACER COPIAS DE SEGURIDAD, no esperen a que se les borre algo para entender, como me paso a mi.

Writing Beautiful UI with XUL

Designing a UI that looks like the panel above is really easy on Firefox (even for an artistically-challenged person like me). All of you need to get started is either a simple online XUL editor or XUL Explorer (which is awesome for testing XUL UI). If you want to test the UI right way on Firefox, you can get a simple extension with just a overlay.xul here

First, add the main element which will be a panel. Panels are new in Firefox 3. They are like popups in that they can be overlayed on top of anything within the window. But they are also much cooler than popups because they can have any kind of content in them possibly even an iframe.

And within that panel, let’s put a simple textbox.

In order open the popup, we add a new item to the menu. Alternatively, you could just add a simple button that runs the same JS code,

So, here’s what my panel looks like right now. Very gray and exceedingly dull.

Let’s make it a bit more interesting. Styling XUL elements is also just like HTML elements. First, we need to add CSS document to our extension. Again, this is not very simple in the extension world. In your extension folder, append this to your chrome.manifest:

Create a new folder called “skin” in your chrome folder. Add a file called test.css where we will have all our css.

Looks great doesn’t it? We can make it look even better by adding transparency and rounded corners. On the web, the normal way to add rounded corners is to create images using a generator and then, add some twenty-odd lines of CSS. But on Firefox, this is easy because the browser has a built-in CSS property for this purpose. So, we just need 1 line of code to get rounded corners. Add this bit of CSS to #log-panel and the textbox:

-moz-border-radius: 1em;
-moz-opacity: 0.7;

Now, look at the final result compared with original panel.

Although extension development normally involves a lot of configuration (chrome.manifest, install.rdf, etc.), designing UI and writing CSS for XUL apps is actually really simple. Simpler than even designing webpages. You only have to test for a single browser. And that browser, Firefox, offers a lot of handy CSS properties.

Speed Up Firefox/Iceweasel

Increase firefox and iceweasel's (fork for debian linux) browsing speed by altering how they handle requests. By default, browser sends out requests (network protocols, i.e. http) to a host a reply is sent back to the browser.The host replies back in the order that the request was sent. The browser can not another request until he receives the previous reply from the host, wait time.

To lessen wait time we setup the browser to send out multiple requests without waiting for the previous request to come back. This is called pipelining.

The illustration below describes the difference.

Do set up pipelining, follow these steps.

Type “About:config” at the address bar (this works with opera as well)
Go to network.http.pipelining
Set value to true (The same as telling the browser to make multiple requests without waiting for the reply)
If you're using a proxy, go to network.http.proxy.pipelining
Scroll to network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and change the value to any number. Instruction for the browser to make 'n' number of requests at the same time.
Go to network.http.keep-alive (network.http.proxy.keep-alive if you're in a proxy)
Set value to true. This tells the browser to always keep the connection to the host open

It's as easy as that.

Need A Password Manager? Try Clipperz

I have previously posted and article about Clipperz, but since then it has undergone many changes, offering an even better system.

Clipperz is an online password manager where you have total control. You access it through a Master Password (Passphrase) that YOU create, should you forget it then you have a real problem as you are the only one who knows it, it isn't stored which also means that it cannot be retrieved.

All the information that you enter into the browser window is fully encrypted and secure. Also, this is the first web-based application that has no knowledge of the users or their data.

You can store pretty much anything from usernames and passwords, credit/debit card details, PIN numbers, software registration codes, personal notes and more. This gives you the ability to create 'one click' logins without having to physically type anything into the username / password fields. You simply launch the Clipperz bookmarklet, click the page that you will have previously saved with your login details and it will open the saved browser window and log you in....how easy is that?

For each site that you require login details simply create a New Card and store it within Clipperz.

You can save all of your encrypted data to your hard drive or a usb flash which creates a 'read-only' version which is fully portable. There is a compact version for Firefox and Opera which can be used in the sidebar for ease of use, see screenshots here

Clipperz is completely anonymous, there is no need to supply any personal information, simply create your account with a username and Passphrase.

There is also an open source Community Edition which allows you to run it from your own server if you prefer rather than using the service provided by the developers.

Unchecking all channels when adding new content

At St Andrews just now we're working on importing a new website design into SiteManager -- which is going very well thanks for asking -- but one task that can be a little tiresome is when adding new content that we want to make absolutely sure will only be published to a particular channel.

By default in SiteManager when you add a new content item it is added to all channels -- you can see this on the Channels tab (labeled 'Sites' in version 5.x of SiteManager) when adding content.

However, if you want to publish your content to only one channel (for example to a test channel) it can be quite a tedious task to untick all but one of the checkboxes, particularly if you're adding a lot of new content. We current have 26 channels, so that requires unchecking 25 boxes for each item of new content.

One of the wishlist items that we've already forwarded to TerminalFour is for the addition of an "Uncheck all" button. But in the meantime ...

Clear Fields

I've discovered an add-on for Firefox 3 (it does not work with older versions of Firefox) that does this task for you automatically. The add-on is called Clear Fields and adds a new button to your toolbar (it actually adds a few more but you can customize the toolbar to include only the options that you require):

A drop-down arrow to the right of the icon allows you to choose from:

Clear Text Fields
Clear Pass Fields
Clear Checkboxes

with the latter, obviously, being the option you require to uncheck the Channels checkboxes.

So now rather than having to click 25 times to remove each unrequired channel from the list, I now have two clicks:

Clear Checkboxes button
Select the channel that I do want

Caveat

A minor caveat about the Clear Fields add-on: it doesn't work with Firefox 3.0.1 without a little tweaking. If you are familiar with the construction of Firefox add-ons then simply tweak the install.rdf file, otherwise wait for the upgrade.

To make the tweak do the following:

Download the xpi file.
Rename the file, adding a .zip extension to the end, i.e. clear_fields-3.0.xpi.zip
Open the file in WinZip (or similar archiving application).
Extract the contents to a location of your choosing. You'll find a folder called chrome and two files: chrome.manifest and install.rdf.
Open install.rdf in your text editor of choice.
Change the line <em:maxVersion>3.0.0.*</em:maxVersion> to <em:maxVersion>3.0.1.*</em:maxVersion> then save the file.
Now use WinZip (or your archiving application of choice) to zip up those three files with no compression. If you use compression it will not work.
Rename the file again, back to its .xpi (pronounced 'zippy') extension.
Drag and drop the file onto an open Firefox window to begin installation.

It should only take a minute or two to do this ... and now you've got the ability to untick all the channel checkboxes in one fell swoop.

por eso Firefox en Debian se llama Iceweasel.

The second beta for Flock 2.0 which is built around the Firefox 3.0 browser has nee been release and adds the Firefox 3.0 URL bar AKA the "AwesomeBar" to the browseer itself as well as many of the features found in the Firefox 3.0 platform.

It's been a while, but since the world record has been and gone (over 8 million recorded downloads, well done Mozilla!) You can get Firefox 3.0 (EN-US version) via BitTorrent through GameUpdates.org - a specialist gaming site that uses P2P (BitTorrent) to distribute gaming patches, trailers, mods etc... I cannot recommend it enough.

IE7Pro? Do Tell

I tripped across an interesting story posted on the Inquirer today -- how IE7Pro turns Windows browser into a Firefox copycat. Interestingly, its an extension to IE -- the work of a virtual team of engineers with open source experience. The author calls it a "cure for Firefox envy."

Hmm -- ok. Why not just download and run the genuine Firefox browser? Maybe that'd be too easy ;-)

Interestingly, the article hits on something else that may be a very real barrier to further Firefox adoption and marketshare growth:

...Adoption at corporations doesn't match its popularity with home users. The causes can be many: inflexible corporate tech support policies, the use of Active-X based in-house applications and never underestimate the fear of the unknown. Whatever the case might be for someone sticking with - or forced to - MS IE, this power user's dream brings some of Firefox' bells and whistles to the Microsoft engine.

And so we now have a "pro" hack to make IE mimic some the functionality of Firefox. I suspect the challenge of enterprise penetration is something folks have long theorized (or even witnessed firsthand): many corporate IT departments aim to maintain a homogeneous computing environment often at the expense of user experience. This has long been the argument against Macs in the enterprise -- but if you believe what you read in BusinessWeek, that tide is starting to shift in part due to the demands of corporate end-users.

All told, i can understand this admin's rationalization much more when thinking about the 'total cost of ownership' for a mixed OS and hardware environment, but Firefox runs on all windows platforms and doesn't cost anything. And given the increasing popularity of Firefox, now even Forrester is advising clients to ensure their internal apps run on both Firefox and IE. When and if that becomes reality, what's to stop corporate users from using the browser they choose instead of resorting to an IE "Pro" copycat hack?
