Tag Finder is a Firefox extension that lets you browse your tags in a manner similar to the column view in the Mac OS X Finder. It allows you to view related tags, and to traverse tag relations quickly.

Just install the script, reload the page, and you can start adding your Google accounts to the drop-down. It's simple to use and it's a huge timesaver for anyone who actively uses different Google usernames and passwords. It's probably not the most secure place to put your passwords, but if that doesn't bother you, this script may come in very handy. The Google Account Multi-Login script is free, requires Firefox with Greasemonkey.

It’s a testament of how little free time I’ve had recently that I’ve only just now

It's a testament of how little free time I've had recently that I've only just now gotten around to downloading Firefox 3. But I've eeked out some time now to play around with it a bit and after the initial shock of "OMG, my navigation toolbar looks weird", I'm getting into some of the much touted features.

What I want to mention here, though, is the built-in Picnik nav bar add-on:

I found it by accident (I'm pressed for time! I didn't read the features page! I never read instructions!) when I accidentally reverted the toolbar to the default and managed to lose my del.icio.us buttons.

So think of this as an appendix to my earlier rant about related software (which, as I went to link to it, I realized I never posted, but I wrote it last Thursday. Man, I'm not up to speed anymore at all...)

The Picnik button is basically a screen shot tool that captures the image-- either the visible portion of the screen or the full page-- then opens up Picnik for your editing pleasure. Nice and easy, simple, straightforward. Not as useful as SnagIt, but since it's free, it's a LOT better than nothing at all.

Doing a round of the Firefox Add-Ons yesterday, I found PicLens and while it has very limited functionality, I was thoroughly impressed with what the guys at Cooliris have done. It renders images in beautiful 3D without a hint of a performance drop, and that is what impressed me the most. Searching Google Images is a completely different experience now. Yeah.

I think it's very promising, but very underused at this stage. Firstly, the UI is excellent: if Cooliris can somehow implement it into Firefox's default UI - that would be a crazy awesome browsing experience, especially since the fancy looks didn't take a long time to load or give a performance drop.

And then in PicLens itself, it would be great if we could save the images directly from the PicLens view, though the most important feature would be to code PicLens so as to identify images on any web page and view them - right now, PicLens is limited to some social networking sites, image sharing sites and image searches (the number of sites is supposedly growing).

I think Cooliris is really cool and can be really big if they look into this more. PicLens might just change the way we look at the Internet.

Another Firefox Tip

I will put up with advertising to a point, but if I am distracted reading content because of advertising with "moving pictures" - enough is enough. There is a neat extension for the Firefox browser called Flashblock. It blocks the Flash player from loading unless you click on the play button. There have been over two million downloads of this Firefox add-on. Below are three snapshots of my computer screen. The area of interest is the "buy stocks" advertisement.

Below is a snapshot of my computer screen before installing Flashblock.

Next is a snapshot after installing Flashblock. All you can see now is the Flash icon in the ad box.

The last snapshot with Flashblock installed. When you move your mouse over the ad box the Flash icon will turn into a "play" icon. If you want to see the ad just click on the play icon.

I’m usually low-maintenance when it comes to online writing tools. For years, the only editor

I'm usually low-maintenance when it comes to online writing tools. For years, the only editor I used at PhilMusic.com was Notepad. The standard low rent text editor that comes with Windows. Years later, I migrated to Textpad, a more full featured text editor. And that's the same editor I decided to use when writing posts at The Ayson Chronicles.

Everyone needs a change of pace, so just for the hell of it, I asked around Twitter what people used for writing text for blogs. Quite a few responded with my same editor - Textpad. A lot of folks use the built-in WYSIWYG editor. One particularly hardcore fella mentioned vi. The stripped-down basic Unix editor that is, not short for Vilma.

@JeffMcNeil , who describes himself as a "Networking consultant, university lecturer, phd student, Internet researcher, Donnagh McDonnagh in Second Life" from Honolulu, responded with the comment that he uses ScribeFire - a Firefox extension.

I was piqued. I've always been a fan of Firefox extensions - essentially low overhead free tools that piggyback on the Firefox browser - so I went up and paid a visit to Scribefire.com and installed it right away.

This is my first post using the editor, and so far, I like what I see. It's a WYSIWYG editor that opens up in either a split-screen ore full screen view (opening up a new window or tab if you prefer), that connects directly to your blog platform of choice via the blogs' API. I set it up using my Wordpress API, and off I went. F8 fires up the editor (which probably results in more compulsive posting). Nothing could be simpler.

I'll probably revert back to Textpad for most of my off-line editing. "Cloud computing" is a nice buzzword, but in real life, we're not always online all the time. But I do believe that I'll be jumping into ScribeFire now and then for a refreshing change of pace.

I have been doing some testing of the latest update to the weave extension version 0.1.30 (change log here) and I have to say it works quite well.

I started with a clean install of Firefox 3.0RC1 from Portable Apps and then installed the extension from here. I ran through the initial setup routine and did the initial sync which took almost 7 minutes to complete. Most of that time was spent with the hard drive churning away with very little CPU or memory impact. After the initial sync i went into the weave preferences and enabled the alpha password and cookie options and then ran another sync.

I then went out to several forum and web mail sites like Gmail etc and all my user names and passwords were there. The feature seems quite stable for being alpha.

I will test the new build more in the coming days including on a Linux install.

Weave is quickly becoming viable replacement for Google Browser Sync that I used previously. Other than the initial sync performance seems to be on par with GBS as well. If this is alpha/beta software I cannot wait to see the release version!

I will test Foxmarks in the future but I have become so accustomed to password/cookie/history syncing that plain bookmark syncing does not really appeal to me at the moment. Not a knock on Foxmarks as I hear it is a great bookmark syncing system.

So I have finally switched to Firefox 3 full time. There so many improvements that everyone else has

So I have finally switched to Firefox 3 full time. There so many improvements that everyone else has talked about so I won't go into them here. The biggest thing holding me back was extension compatibilities. The most important one Google Browser Sync is not and quite possibly will not be compatible with Firefox 3 any time soon. Enter Mozilla Labs Weave. This promises to be a very good replacement to GBS and possibly so much more. So far it meets my needs perfectly and I look forward to the future of this project.

Some other extensions that I use (read: can't live without) are Tab Mix Plus and Sage-Too. For Tab Mix Plus you need to download a Dev build for Firefox 3. So far it works flawlessly. Sage-too is a fork of the popular Sage RSS reader that has not seen any development for a year or so. I happy to see someone pick up this extension and port it to FF3.

The last one that I also really like is Download Statusbar. It also works well with FF3.

Those are my main picks. Check back for some more details on these extensions in future posts.

Later and enjoy.

When Bram Cohen became famous for bittorrent, I immediately started following his web presence. You see, back around 1994 or 1995, I joined the UB Juggling Club (yeah, I know I'm a dork, but juggling is fun) and Bram soon joined as well. He was obviously brilliant, as he quickly picked up on all the juggling terminology and would have these interesting conversations with me about these intricate juggling patterns. It blew my mind.

Yesterday, Bram wrote that he wants a process list for web browser activity:

"Could somebody please implement metrics on how much CPU each tab/window is using..."

I responded with news about Mozilla's effort on that front, as evidenced by the Firefox 3 addon PluginWatcher. Its a good start.

Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to the Firefox web browser. They allow you to customize Firefox to fit your own needs and preferences.	Here's a list of the most popular and useful extensions for blocking ads:

Adblock Plus
Install Adblock Plus and get rid of ads and banners on the internet. You can create your own filters and also block flash and java elements. Or choose a filter subscription and most advertisements will be blocked fully automatically.

Element Hiding Helper is a companion extension for Adblock Plus meant to make creating element hiding rules easier.

Greasemonkey
Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript. Hundreds of scripts, for a wide variety of popular sites, are already available at userscripts.org.

Stylish
Stylish allows easy management of user styles. It is to CSS what Greasemonkey is to JavaScript. After you install it, it can be used to tweak the appearance of specific web sites as well as of sites globally. It is useful to reconfigure websites after the ads have been removed.

Blocksite
BlockSite is an extension, which automagically blocks websites of your choice. Additionally, it will disable all hyperlinks to these websites, by just displaying the link text without the clicking functionality. This extension adds the site blocking functionality that was removed from Adblock Plus.

NoScript
Allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from trusted domains of your choice and guards the "trust boundaries" against cross-site scripting attacks.

Pick up the latest development version for adblock plus. Like for me adblockplus-0.7.5.3+.2008040612.xpi works perfect.

The Passively Multiplayer Online Game looks interesting, using a Firefox extension to monitor web surfing habits and monitor progress.

This unconventional massively multiplayer online game merges your web life with an alternate, hidden reality. The mundane takes on a layer of fantastic achievement. Player behavior generates characters and alliances, triggers interactions in the environment and earns the player points to spend online beefing up their inventory. Suddenly the Internet is not a series of untouchable exhibits, but rather a hackable, rewarding environment!

You can even leave traps for sites you think your friends are sure to stumble upon! Needless to say, I think I'll be sitting this one out--Progress Quest was enough passive gaming for me.

A great help when building Regular Expressions is KDE's kregexpeditor, part of kdeutils. You can visually compose and analyse your regexes and match them against desired text.
And well, while this regex might seem like black magic at first (and second ;) sight, and it can be kind of mind boggling oftentimes, it's really worth learning it! The syntax is being used in so many places (tools, programming languages) and will come very handy for parsing and substituting texts.

Firefox 3 beta 4 was just released. I have been upgrading without waits and have been running the greatest firefox all the time. When I advised a friend, he said he does not upgrade since his extensions doesn't work. I was like come on!! You don't know, Extensions.checkCompatibility ?

So friends, don't stop yourself any further, Install the latest wonderful thing here. Again, here's are the release notes to find how much greater it became. And here's the detailed performance review.

Firefox 3 Beta 4 includes more than 900 enhancements from the previous beta, including drastic improvements to performance and memory usage, as well as fixes for stability, platform enhancements and user interface improvements. Many of these improvements were based on community feedback from the previous beta.

And for those who had been laying back for extensions that doesn't work, quickly browse to about:config and create a new boolean value -> extensions.checkCompatibility and set it to false.

Most of my extensions work without breaking anything.
