Lately I’ve been thinking about how much I Love “the Color Purple”. The Book, the film and recently the musical are all powerful portrayals of the struggles of what it meant to be a double minority in a poor, racist, and sexist society. I am most familiar with the movie rendition, and thanks to the magic of TV One (shout out to Cathy Hughes) I got a replay of it this weekend and fell in love with it again.

I really truly love this movie, not just because it’s given me these wonderful quotes:

“You told Harpo to Beat me! All my life I had to fight. I had to fight my daddy. I had to fight my uncles. I had to fight my brothers. A girl child ain't safe in a family of men, but I ain't never thought I'd have to fight in my own house!”

“You aught to beat Mr____’s head in and think on heaven later!”

“You Sho’ is ugly!”

“I’s Married now!”

“I curse you. Until you do right by me everything you think about is gonna crumble!”, Until you do right by me, everything you even think about gonna fail! “

“Don’t do it Miss Celie he ain’t worth it”

“Harpo, Who dis woman?”

“When I seen you, I knowed de was a God”

“ I love Harpo God knows I do, But I’ll kill him dead for I let him Beat me”

“See Daddy Sinners have soul too”

“I hear she got that nasty women's disease”

“Maybe- God is- Trying! ( To tell you something)”

But I really love this story because of how wonderfully it portrays the double burden of race and gender. This is a time period when a woman was only as good as the man who married her, where men ruled with an iron fist and the world had little concern for a black child in a “house full of men.” Miss Celie’s abuse begins in a her childhood. She is raped, impregnated, has her children stolen and is forced into marriage by the very man who should have been protecting her- her father. This and the rest of the women in this story are faced with insurmountable hurdles but still manage to champion over them all. It truly is the woman’s struggle to find approval.

Celie’s struggles with accepting herself and finding her own value, Sofia’s struggle to be accepted as a strong, thinking, woman in spite of race and sex, and Shug’s struggle to be valued as more than just a sexual being and accepted by her father.
The Shug/Celie Love story is often simplified as a lesbian love affair but it’s much more than than. The sexual relationship is symbolic of transformation. Both of them find what they’re lacking in each other. Celie finds beauty, power and self-fulfillment and Shug finds an identity that is outside of her sexual one. The ability to be caring and loving without someone wanting something other than that love.

But “The Color Purple” is just as much about black men as it is about women. It’s easy to look at it and vilify the men in the story as hateful misogynists. But it’s important to look at some things

!. All of these men are black, in the south, in the early 1900’s. They had no real control over anything in their lives. They worked 4 times harder for only a quarter of the pay, they were feared and hated by the society around them (remember when they were going to help Mrs. Millie and she freaked out about “Being attacked”). So these men controlled the only thing that the larger society didn’t care about and that was black women.

2. Harpo was a good man, it was the burden of the rest of society that challenged him. The call of his father (even Celie) put on him to “control his woman.” And it was Harpo’s need to prove his manhood that ruined his relationship. Harpo and Sofia could have avoided a lot of drama if they’d never listened to the advice of Mr____ in the first place.

3. Mr__________ is a brute and a tyrant, We can all agree on that, but Mr____ spent his whole life never getting “the girl”. In all books, the handsome, well off (or what would be considered well off in that day) man gets the girl of his dreams but that never did happen for him. He was in love with Shug, but Shug was in love with everyone else (including Miss Celie). He even had feelings for Celie’s Sister, but she’d rather go to Africa then to be with him. So he uses Celie as his punching bag as an escape from his own anger and perpetuates the cycle of abuse his father doled out to him

There is so much we can learn from this rich narrative. The thing I took from it is that the women in this story, give each other the respect that the rest of the world didn’t give them. How many best friends do you know that call each other Miss all the time (Miss Sophia, Miss Celie etc.). Other women didn’t call Shug a “ho” the men did. In spite of the conflict and the foolishness

In this post, I will show a film budget for a typical independent film that has a 500 thousand budget. Most Independent films or small budget films have a budget between 500,000 and 7 million. If you are just starting out, you can study this table below to find out what are typical above the line costs and below the line costs. Usually, the director makes the most amount of money, but most A-list Actors would make more than a B-List Director, because he is hungry to get their name on the screen to market the film around that actor.
For the most part, above the line makes less than below the line when you combine it together, only because of the very few above the line and the many below the line technical staff. In a film budget, everything is guestimated and cannot go more than the guestimated amount. Then, the budget is re-written to show on a film distribution memorandum to show actual costs. I cannot stress this enough: The budget is your most important investment and marketing tool to show to a distributor. Here is the budget below :

Filmmaker Jeffrey Roth has created a first-rate film about most of the now-living Apollo moonwalkers called The Wonder of It All. This is a short review. A longer version is here. To read a lengthy and indepth review click here. The film is just over 80 minutes in length.

The film captures the heart and humanity of the spacefaring heroes in a way that honors the men's accomplishments but reminds us that heroes have feet-of-clay too. As a complement, the Apollo moonwalkers come across more like Forrest Gump than unapproachable celebrities. This film brings the moonwalkers down-to-earth with dignity and respect. We now know these men better than we ever did.

The Wonder of It All is divided into nine major segments, each lasting between 4-9 minutes, with the exception of the segment called The Moon. Each segment contains brief clips of the astronauts answering a question in a comfortable setting. Clips range from a few to several seconds, usually less than thirty. While the astronauts are talking the director often will show original pictures in the background (some from the astronaut's personal collection no doubt), and many from NASA's archive. Included too are frequent audio and/or video transmissions.

The segments included in the film, and in order are: (1) Becoming a Hero; (2) Chosen; (3) Fear; (4) Making History; (5) The Moon; (6) Back Home; (7) Columbus; (8) Spirituality; (9) Reflections.

Though the comprehensive review is the best way to really get a feel for what the film is about and what it contains, I will briefly highlight one item from each of the main segments in this short review.

Becoming a Hero

Buzz Aldrin, Alan Bean, and Charlie Duke especially help the viewer see that the typical moonwalker did not think of himself as a hero so much as an inquisitive, highly skilled test-pilot-turned-explorer, who simply found himself lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. “I just happened to be in the pipeline….” Says Alan Bean.

One concludes that becoming a hero is not something that is pre-planned or sought after, rather it happens, if it happens at all, when one recognizes an opportunity to deliver a personal level of human excellence in a situation that calls for uncompromising courage and calculated risk.

Chosen

Alan Bean talks about almost missing the Apollo program completely, having been assigned to Skylab (which he says was an assignment no one wanted). Bean reflected, “Am I gonna pout . . . or do Skylab as good as I could do?” Pete Conrad came over one day and invited Bean to fly with him on Apollo. “I thank Pete all the time with how he wanted to help me become a better human being and astronaut.”

Fear

This section reveals how each of the seven men interviewed handled fear. But the best part of this section is when Gene Cernan talks about the aftermath of the Apollo 1 fire/tragedy in late January 1961 that killed astronauts Grissom, Chaffee and White. The film shows some original footage of the funeral ceremony at Arlington in February. Astronaut Gene Cernan speaking of burying a couple fellow astronauts at Arlington starkly revealed that “I wasn’t sure we weren’t burying the Apollo program at that time.”

Making History

One of the more entertaining anecdotes is shared by Mitchell during this exchange about making history. Mitchell was asked by a senior government official, “Do you read history?” Mitchell replied, “Yes, but I’m too busy at the moment making it though.”

The Moon

The longest segment of all nine; some 21 minutes. It is very hard to narrow down just one highlight from this section because there are over 40 vingnettes to choose from but this brief list should whet ones appetite a little:

* Charlie Duke talks about the near abort lunar landing of Apollo 16. “Our spirits were lifted by 10,000 percent!”
* Cernan and Schmitt singing "Strolling on the Moon One Day".
* Cernan's description of the lunar surface is excellent. “How can something so desolate be so magnificent?”
* Charlie Duke falling backwards during the Moon Olympics is too funny. “I was thankful to be alive.”
* Alan Bean's observation of Shepard's famous golf shot in Mission Control led him to say, “We got plenty of good rocks from the Moon; maybe not enough good stories.”
* Cernan's thoughts as he had to climb back into the Lunar Module can be appreciated by all, “When it came time to leave . . . I wanted to stop the clock. I wanted to stop time and savor the moment."

Back Home

One of the best statements in the film comes from Alan Bean who says that coming home from a successful lunar landing “. . . made me satisfied with my life for the rest of my life.” But the best part of this section by far is when Buzz Aldrin shares from his painful domestic experiences with powerful emotion. His mother committed suicide about a year before Apollo 11 launched in mid 1969, and the demons of alcoholism plagued the Aldrin family across multiple generations. The pain on his face as he shares from his painful past is endearing and reminds us that heroes have feet of clay too.

Columbus

In this five minute segment, the director apparently asked the men if they think of themselves much like Columbus, the American uber-explorer? Alan Bean then brings up Neil Armstrong who is often compared to Columbus today. As mentioned previously, knowing that Armstrong could have been part of this film, yet obviously chose not to be, is a vivid reminder to the space history enthusiast today that we continue to be denied the opportunity to hear a firsthand account of our modern-day Columbus in important oral and visual histories like this film. The mention of Armstrong is obligatory at the least but awkward at best at this point of the film. But this is not the director’s fault.

Spirituality

Bean, after coming home, observed that the experience tended to simply reinforce whatever religious or spiritual impulses an astronaut already had. Later Bean points out how many cultures look to the heavens to find God and only to find no matter how hard one looks, he is ever elusive. Duke says he didn’t see then what he sees now. He says that as an astronaut his ‘god’ was his career and now his priorities are balanced.

Reflections

This part of the film is a cornucopia of reflections from the Apollo astronauts. Young takes the time again to lament that we should have already been back to the moon before now and have an established lunar base. “It is the key to our future.” Duke, with boyish enthusiasm, recalls how he was there and still remembers most every moment when he was on the lunar surface. But it is Cernan again, who like an evangelist, shares with believable conviction that he still recalls where everything is. He can still see the tracks. While sharing his reflections he almost embarrassingly admits he was just taken back. “It’s almost unreal for me to accept the fact that I’ve done it.”

In the final few seconds we see Duke enthusiastically exclaim, “The emotion was the excitement and the wonder of it all” from which the film takes its name.

Cernan closes the film with a Forrest Gump-like description of the experience, “It was like sitting in a rockin chair, on God’s front porch, looking back home . . . it was an overpowering experience.”

As the film comes to a close the music sways to consciousness again and we see these words appear on the screen, “Twelve men walked on the Moon. May we always be inspired by their courage, dedication and pioneering spirit.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was credited with producing the first Rock and Roll recording (Rocket 88) and several chart topping hits. In the musical community he is seen as one of the primary architects of the R&B rock and roll genre. A prolific guitarist that had a way with words, Turner made a name for himself on talent and determination.

However, Turner was not only a legend for his music, but also the melody he played outside of the studio. His drug use and violently turbulent marriage to Tina Turner were documented in the 1986 autobiography "I,Tina" and the 1993 film "What's Love Got To Do With It?" As reported in USA Today article published on December 13th, Ike Turner disputed his portrayal in both instances.

How is this man to be remembered? For his remarkable ability to move a nation through song, or his inability to keep a raging anger in check? An extensive article by MSNBC suggests that Turner had begun to reconstruct his image as of late, even winning a Grammy in 2007, but acknowledged that his reputation was still representative of the man who abused Tina Turner.

Reportedly Tina Turner declined to comment on Ike Turner's death. Her spokeswoman, Michele Schweitzer said in a statement "Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made."

Fault and talent are two things that never fall far apart. However the overlap leaves only one able to prevail. Should the smooth bass line of guitar riff overshadow brutal domestic abuse? Should one's character be defined in one period of their life? How will society regard this man in history?

The truth is that Ike Turner was both - an achievement and a disappointment, talented and flawed. Though to ignore that in the wake of his death would be a disservice to his memory no matter which way those remembering are swayed.

In his own words during an interview with the Associated Press “I know what I am in my heart. And I know regardless of what I’ve done, good and bad, it took it all to make me what I am today,”

Ofelia, az egyedül maradt 8 éves kislány igen hamar rátalál a könyveiből jól ismert és áhított tündérek, szörnyek lakta világra. A malom mellett álló labirintus mélyén egy faun meséli el neki, hogy őrá vár már hosszú ideje és holdtöltéig - ami igen közeleg - még 3 próbatételt kell teljesítenie. Hogy miért? Mert ő egy mágikus királyság rég elveszett hercegnője, akit hazavár az apja, a király.

S hogy mi lehet mindennek a vége?! Egy őrült megszállott kapitány; egy beteges, várandós anya; egy elhanyagolt, szeretéhes, fantáziadús lány és a forrongó háborús helyzet ..

Amit semmiképp nem hagynék szó nélkül az a zene. Engem nagyon megfogott! Egyszerű, szomorú, a vissza-visszatérő altatódal fülbemászó, amitől csak még inkább belekerülünk magunk is a történetbe.

Lo ricordate il film "Una settimana da Dio" con Jim Carry del 2003? Un film davvero divertente con il migliore dei comici americani, ecco, sta per arrivare il seguito del film, dal titolo "Un' impresa da Dio" ma questa volta il protagonista non sarà più Carry, ma un altro altrettanto bravo e divertente attore, Steve Carell.

Carell in USA, è un attore di grande successo e fama, qui da noi deve ancora conquistarsi la popolarità che merita, di lui si possono ricordare film come: "Littele Miss Sunshine" del 2006", 40 anni vergine" del 2005, tra i più famosi usciti da noi. Ma Carell era prsente anche nel primo "Una settimana da Dio", faceva il giornalista, Evan, che cerca di soffiare il lavoro a Bruce (Jim Carry), memorabile la scena di quando Bruce con i suoi poteri lo fa parlare in modo strano durante la diretta del Tg nazionale! Carell oltre a recitare al cinema, è protagonista anche della divertente sit com USA, The Office, in onda dal 2005 sul network Nbc e da noi su Fox Italia (Sky).

Un'impresa da Dio uscirà da noi il 28 settembre di quest'anno, mentre negli States arriverà il prossimo 22 giugno. Secondo IMDB, noi siamo l'ultimo paese ad avere la data d'uscita così in ritardo, come al solito sempre primi nelle "cose" negative. Altro protagonista da non dimenticare è Morgan Freeman che in questo sequel riveste sempre i panni di Dio, questa volta cercherà di far costrire una nuova arca di Noe al "povero" Carell.
