Here’s some grisly video from the first inning of Friday’s Mariners game against the Yan

Here's some grisly video from the first inning of Friday's Mariners game against the Yankees:

[dailymotion id=x5blrq]

There are several reasons why this play is awful. On the surface, it's because Yuni makes an error, which is never fun to watch. Also, he makes an error while fielding a grounder hit by Derek Jeter, who's a terrible terrible defensive shortstop (as Fire Joe Morgan will tell you). And, to top off what was an abysmal start to an abysmal series against the Yankees, Mike Blowers says at the end of the clip, "That's a play we see him make all the time." You can choose to infer that Blowers is saying that Yuni usually successfully fields grounders, but I prefer to interpret it as Blowers acknowledging that Yuni is prone to mental lapses in the field.

To make matters worse, Jeter ended up scoring in that inning, laying the groundwork for a 5-1 loss. Yuni's error was so terrible that it made me invent a new statistic, the Game Losing Error or GaLE. It's slimly based on the Game Winning RBI (GWRBI) which was a popular stat in the 1980s--when a batter knocked in the go-ahead run, he was credited with a GWRBI. It supposedly measured hitters' clutchiness, until everyone realized that it pretty much reflected regular (non-GW) RBI totals. (Read Dave Pinto's post for more on GWRBI's.)

GaLE's work a lot like GWRBI--when an error leads to a go-ahead run scoring, the fielder that makes the error gets dinged with a GaLE. So, Yuni's error on Friday gives him a GaLE. What about the rest of the season? Here's a game-by-game breakdown

4/1 vs. the Rangers: In another shortstop-on-shortstop error, Yuni's errant throw turns Michael Young's double play ball into a fielder's choice. Young fails to score, but J.J. Putz fails when Josh Hamilton hits a game-winning home run in the 9th. No GaLE
4/5 vs. the Orioles: Yuni botches a Ramon Hernandez grounder. On the same play, Luke Scott scores on an errorful throw by Raul Ibanez. That tied the game at 2, though the O's went onto win, 6-4. Technically, no GaLE.
4/16 vs. the A's: Yuni's error lets Bobby Crosby score, but the Mariners win 4-2. Thanks Felix! No GaLE.
4/24 vs. the Orioles: Adam Jones reaches thanks to a Yuni error, but he's stranded. M's lose. Sorry Jarrod. No GaLE.

Final total: Yuni has just one GaLE this year.

So... maybe this stat is especially useless. It's reliant on the whims of the scorekeeper and the game's scenario. Still, I'm bothered that FanGraph's WPA doesn't count defense into its WPA and Clutch stats. Derek Jeter gets credit for getting on board in Friday's game, when the blame should go straight to Yuni.

Here is a stellar specimen of journalism provided by the New York Post.

How's this for junk science - even with three Gold Gloves, Yankees captain Derek Jeter has been labeled the worst fielding shortstop in baseball.

What do those eggheads know anyway? With their fancy book learning! Jeter has been anointed by the most objective analysis available, the opinions of baseball beat writers. This statistical study was purely a smear campaign intended to "label" Jeter as something he is not.

But the numbers prove it, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania said yesterday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, in (of course) Boston.

Yes, of course the researchers at the University of Pennsylvania altered the results of their study because of the city at which they would be presenting the results.

Using a complex statistical method, researchers concluded that Alex Rodriguez was one of the best shortstops in the game when he played for the Texas Rangers.

"Complex" means that you didn't bother to read it. Even by your everyman standards of gold gloves, his two gold gloves during that period (2002,2003) at Shortstop would have proven that. It was also the general consensus when he was traded to the Yankees.

Obviously, we need an expert to analyze this study. Take it away "Yankees fan Mike."

"I don't know what they're smoking down at Penn," said Yankees fan Mike.

Birch 32. "That's preposterous. I completely disagree. Jeter's a clutch player."

2007 ALDS

Alex Rodriguez: .820 OPS

Derek Jeter: .352 OPS

"It's ridiculous," said fan Jay Ricker. "Jeter is all-around awesome. He's better than A-Rod any day. Character has a lot to do with it. He's out there for his teammates."

Career Stats

Alex Rodriguez: .967 OPS, 518 HR

Derek Jeter: .851 OPS, 195 HR

Their last season fielding together at SS was 2003. Among Major League Shorstops, Jeter was third from bottom in fielding percentage and dead last by a large margin in both range factor and zone rating. Rodriguez was 1st in fielding percentage, and 9th in zone rating and range factor.

In fact, in most seasons Jeter has ranked last or next to last in both zone rating and range factor.

But, as Yankee fan Brittnay Thompson, 32, said, "It's about who's good in May and who's good in October."

2007 May Stats

Alex Rodriguez: .235 BA 5 HR 11RBI .782 OPS (by far worst month of the season)

Derek Jeter: .342 BA 1HR 20RBI .912 OPS (by far best month of the season)

2007 September Stats

Alex Rodriguez: .362 10 HR 31 RBI 1.193 OPS

Derek Jeter: .311 3HR 14 RBI .858 OPS

Too bad the rise of Nishioka made him an expendable player by Bobby Valentine after the 2005 championship season and was traded for cash to the Giants where he had no hope of grabbing a starting job unless he really smoked with the bat, but his hitting went into a deep funk and never recovered after switching teams.

Friday we discussed Tom Jones by Henry Fielding in my Restoration & 18th Century Literature semi

Friday we discussed Tom Jones by Henry Fielding in my Restoration & 18th Century Literature seminar. This professor is really excellent. Very energetic, great sense of humor, and very knowledgeable. I had only read 130 or so of the 850 page book, but I admitted it. The pages I had read, however, I had taken notes and highlighted citations, so I was able to keep up and contribute.

I was aided considerably by having watched the 1960s version of the film with my parents. It was the last thing I did before I left for my freshman year of college.

It truly is amazing how ahead of its time it was as a book, and how the narrator's voice seems scattered and absent-minded, yet every little detail, and every way of presenting information itself is a hint or serves a purpose. The amount of comedy cannot be understated either. I found myself laughing out loud at several points.

The most quotable sound bite of the discussion is as follows:
"Most English novels written before 1960 wouldn't work if there had been paternity tests."

1.) Nu intra niciodata in panica. Opreste-te, respira, gandeste.

8.) Cheia succesului sta in modul in care iti revii dupa un esec.

9.) Fii buna si cinstita.

10.) Cumpara-ti numai haine in care iti vine sa dansezi.

11.) Increde-te in instinct, nu in imaginatia ta hiperactiva.

12.) Cand te simti coplesita de o nenorocire, verifica mai intai daca e vorba intr-adevar de o nenorocire, prin urmatoarele metode:

a. gandeste: "oh, ia mai da-o-n ma-sa";

b. gaseste-i si o parte buna si, daca nu o gasesti, gaseste-i partea amuzanta.

In an earlier post I spoke of not trading progress for success. I really mean that you don’t

In an earlier post I spoke of not trading progress for success. I really mean that you don't want to trade progress today for today's success. One of the things I think youth coaches and parents forget is that proper technique is the basis for long term success in baseball regardless of how well that correct movement is performed today.

I'd rather have a kid do everything right from a movement standpoint and still make an error instead of moving improperly and being temporarily successful. Think of it this way; you could probably teach a child to throw a baseball from second to first behind his back and have him do it so well he could actually get runners out. But despite his success, it would never be the "right" thing to do.

There is a right way and a wrong way to make most baseball moves. Fielding ground balls, performing suicides in the outfield, running back on balls all need to be done properly today to ensure tomorrow's success.

Add to that, proper technique leads to greater enjoyment of the game by the player. And for the younger kids, proper technique means they will perform tasks properly and in that way will learn to lose things such as a fear of the ball.

Lose the fear? A player who learns how to catch, field and turn away from a thrown pitch is less likely to be hit, the basis of the fear. One of things coaches of almost all ages should not be afraid of using are RIF or reduced injury factor baseballs. They can be found at most sporting goods stores and are softer than regular baseballs. Tennis balls can work as a substitute. You can't a expect a player to move properly if they are afraid of what will happen if they happen to miss the ball.

Finally, don't measure the success in practice, or even a game at times, in terms of balls hit or batters struck out. Kids will react better and improve if can get them to see progress in technique regardless of the end result.

Here are some pictures of Hurst House in the daytime. I DID NOT trespass to take these photographs. The owner showed us the house. DO NOT trespass on this property.

I will also be adding pictures I took of the house after dark.

This photo is of the back wall in Fielding Hurst's bedroom. The small door gives access to one of the attics.

This is the bathroom. It, of course, was added in later years by the Dodds.

This is the original kitchen in the backyard, where the slaves prepared the meals.

This is the grounds behind the house.

This is the front of the house. The tarp covers the leaking roof. The window peeking out from under it is the one you may have seen around the internet with a face in it. That's Hurst's bedroom.

This is where a bullet grazed the staircase. Some say this was where Hurst was killed, but this is not true. It is not known how this truly got there and one can only speculate about it as there are no records of what really happened here.

I confess, I follow cricket thoroughly and have for years and understand the game - however the naming of fielding positions has continued to baffle me.

Third man: There are eleven men on the field, why is he singled out? You could have "first man", "second man"...

Slip: Did someone slip?

Point: How can one position be singled out as "point".

Cover: Why cannot cover be on the on-side assuming that you are "covering" for the ball? And then someone decided to add "extra cover" - very imaginative!

On versus Off: Who first decided which side was on and which was off?

Mid wicket: Not close to the middle of the wicket is it?

Silly: Silly mid on/off etc. - definitely someone had to be playing a practical joke like "he looks silly standing there" and it took on????

So what is the history behind this and any explanations (logical or otherwise)? Any others to add?

Over the weekend, I met a relative of Colonel Fielding Hurst. He went with us to Purdy Cemetery and was going to show us where the Old Purdy Cemetery was located before we were asked to leave.

This descendant states that in his personal opinion, if anyone were to be haunting Hurst Mansion it would more than likely be Colonel Fielding's wife, Melocky Hurst. He says that it was told through the generations of his family that Mrs. Hurst was very saddened by having to leave her dream home and this is why he believes her spirit may still be there.

I was also told that many of the Hursts buried in this area are children that Colonel Hurst conceived with his slaves. He stated that the descendants of these children attend the family reunions to this day. I had read that he had children with several of his slaves. I can't remember if I read it on Kevin D. McCann's blog or on HurstNation.com, but it was one of those sites.

Anyone with interesting information on the Hurst Family, please email tnhauntings@writersbeacon.com.

This is another place I have been to numerous times. The history of these places is truly fascinatin

This is another place I have been to numerous times. The history of these places is truly fascinating so I will share the true stories before I discuss the local legends.
Purdy was once the county seat of McNairy County and home to Purdy University. The area surrounding Purdy Cemetery and Hurst Mansion was once referred to as "Hurst Nation". A prominent man by the name of Fielding Hurst owned Hurst Mansion and much of the land surrounding it.
During the Civil War, Hurst became a Union sympathizer and joined the Union Army as colonel of the 6th Tennessee Cavalry. He murdered many of his neighbors and burnt town the entire town of Purdy, excluding only his own home. Of course, this makes Hurst Mansion the oldest existing structure in the town. He also burnt down parts of Jackson, TN after extorting over $5,000 from them.
In the last years of his life, Hurst was forced to sell his home and he and his wife, Melocky, moved to the Mount Gilead area. It was there that he died (in his 70's) and is buried in Mount Gilead Cemetery. His grave has been vandalized several times.
The Hurst Mansion was purchased by the Dodds, who owned the home until 1993. This home is posted and trespassing is strongly discouraged. Please be respectful.

Local legend says that you can hear soldiers and slaves in Purdy Cemetery. Some people say they have seen a horse drawn carriage. Others say that if you park on the left side of the circle your car will not start until dawn.
After many visits, I can only say this: I have never heard soldiers or slaves. We did hear a scream from the woods which could very possibly have been a local prankster. We did have a vehicle stall for five minutes on the left side of the circle but I believe it was a starter going bad. Aside from that, it is still interesting to visit as it is one of the oldest cemeteries in Tennessee dating back to the early 1800's. I will be visiting Purdy Cemetery very soon as it has been years since my last visit and many of my friends are interested in going. I will provide an update after my visit.

Hurst Mansion was always a place we overlooked, really. It was not until recently that I read the history of this house. Local legend says one of Hurst's many enemies shot at him from the bottom of the stair case and he died in his bedroom. (Hurst DID NOT die in this house. He died in Mount Gilead.) They say sometimes the blood spot will reappear and you can hear him scream. This is highly unlikely since he did not die there. However, I have seen several photographs of Hurst House with a ghostly face in one of the upstairs windows. When I compared the image to photos of Hurst, you can see a resemblance. (You can see these images for yourself on http://www.hurstnation.com.)
I will be taking a closer look at Hurst Mansion and taking my own photographs to see if this phenomena repeats itself. Please note: I will NOT be trespassing on the property. I will take my photos from the roadway. If you decide to visit, please respect the owner's wishes and do the same.
I will post pictures and updates after my visit.

Baseball fans, especially those die-hards in Chicago, must have noticed the explosive beginning to t

Baseball fans, especially those die-hards in Chicago, must have noticed the explosive beginning to the season for new Cubs right fielder Kosuke Fukudome. As of April 8th, Fukudome (pronounced foo-koo-doh-may) is hitting .458 with a homer and 6 RBI. He's stolen 2 bags and walked 7 times. After an abysmal spring, expectations were low for the Japanese rookie, but for those who have seen what Fukudome could do in Japan, his fast start should be an indication of great things to come this season.

So who is Kosuke Fukudome?

Fukudome is a soon-to-be 31 year old former outfielder for the Chunichi Dragons of Japanese Professional Baseball's Central League division. The Dragons are the home squad for the city of Nagoya in Aichi prefecture, west of Tokyo. A first round pick in the 1998 amateur draft, Fukudome played seven seasons with Chunichi, compiling a .305 career average, 192 home runs and 647 RBI. In 2006, he won the Central League MVP award and he was a part of last year's team that won the Japan Series, taking the 4 game series from the defending champion Nippon Ham Fighters. He also was a member of the champion Japan national team in the first World Baseball Classic.

Fukudome has a chance to become a major cog in both the offense and defense of the Chicago Cubs. In addition to being a consistent contact hitter and a threat on the basepaths, Fukudome has an outstanding eye at the plate. In 3,852 career at bats in Japan, he walked 571 times and his career OBP was .397. He is patient, methodical and unselfish, willing to sacrifice or bunt should need be.

Defensively, Fukudome was an outstanding outfielder, compiling a .990 fielding percentage in Japan. Interestingly, he was originally an infielder, able to play mostly shortstop and third base but was moved to the outfield. The Cubs will rely on him to to use his range to patrol a spacious right field at Wrigley and his strong arm to get a few put-outs at the plate.

The question with Fukudome lies only in his ability at the Major League level. He has shown he can hit and field already, but can he be consistent beyond the first week of the season? Akinori Iwamura of the Tampa Bay Rays had a similar start last year and turned many heads with his stellar offense and speed. But injuries and a struggle to remain consistent with major league pitching suggested his stellar start to be nothing more than a fluke.

Still, Fukudome has the skills to succeed within all of Major League Baseball. Whether he keeps it up or not, only time will tell. For now though, he is the hottest hitter in baseball.

Beyond the journey at Fielding, the past few weeks I have been in Thailand on a trip with family. It was quite the special trip as we explored many parts of Thailand, most of which I had seen before, but, for the benefit and experience of others who came along we thought they would enjoy.

Before the trip across to the other side of the world, I attended our NSO (new student orientation) at Fielding. After quite the week in Santa Barbara, I had a few things to read and review, such as about four books, and quite a few articles for the next stops of the journey at Fielding. I came back to two other books waiting for me in my post office box and many many emails I did not quite get to read while away in Thailand.

This week has been catch-up week. I am still finishing up the readings necessary for the RAP (research and practice) session in Anaheim next week. I will write more when I catch-up from the session in Anaheim and as I have time during our nine week DOCS (doctoral competencies) seminar that also begins right after the RAP session.

Until then, I will keep a pace that I was reminded of when I read my latin word/phrase for the day calendar... "Per gradus" - step by step.

I read in the newspapers today that Robin is not to be a part of the coaching outfit for the Test series. The reason trotted out is that his "presence will be required more for a one-day international series and not for a short three-Test series".

I am shocked! What kind of stupid logic is this? Now we can see why we lose Tests that we should have won. The adage, as I remember it, is "catches win matches" and not "catches win one-day internationals". Quite possibly, the BCCI knows only the latter.

If Robin was not effective, say that. If it is because of financial considerations, acknowledge that. But this is as lame an excuse as the dog ate my homework. There are things at play which are not made clear and Indian cricket will suffer because of this. Maybe Robin needs to be politically more astute?

I watched two ICL matches last week - Lahore vs. Chennai and Mumbai vs. Kolkata.

The first thing that jumps out at you is the pathetic fielding standards. Granted, the outfield was more a minefield but the fielders looked to be totally out of shape and had no sense of where the ball was going.

Parore missed stumping Inzy - can you believe that? Inzy's batting was heavenly, of course.

I am hoping that the standards will improve and that the ICL also gets to play on better grounds. The fight is petty and we, as paying public, deserve better.

I also caught a bit of the Hyderabad vs. Lahore match and I was amazed at the huge turnout. This gives me hope that there is enough room for two leagues. Perhaps we will end up with 300 different World Champions like in boxing. Who knows?

I’m taking a long time to finish my Human Development and consciousness knowledge area (KA 702

I'm taking a long time to finish my Human Development and consciousness knowledge area (KA 702). There are several reasons for this. I'm conducting a research project for my final in-depth paper. It's a mini-dissertation. The literature review for the paper includes reading about ten books. So far, I've read four. I also have a lot of articles I want to reference. Haven't started them. I have 4 of 6 interview participants lined up, but still need to receive the digital voice recorder that I ordered on Amazon almost three weeks ago (I think the P. O. lost it). Once I have that, I'm ready to go with the interviews.

At Fielding Graduate University, our coursework progress is entirely student-directed. It is up to us to contact faculty and negotiate contracts with them to satisfy our KA requirements. One of my roadblocks this past month was that the Fielding email system was capturing my emails to faculty and placing them in a spam folder. This wasn't supposed to happen because my email is registered with Fielding's email system as a verified email address. But it did and I didn't realize it until I called one of the faculty members after waiting three weeks for an answer to my emails!

After that was fixed, I opened two new contracts: "KA753B - Research Design" and "KA717 - Organizational Studies." The faculty member for my research design KA won't be able to start working with me until the end of April because he has too many open contracts right now. This is unfortunate since I'm starting my first real research project right now.

I'm really excited about the topic I have picked for my Organizational Studies KA - In-depth paper, which will examine ideas related to aesthetics within the organizational domain. I will explore questions and ideas such as:

What can we learn about organizational dynamics and leadership from ensembles of musicians?

Is intimacy between members of a string quartet required for performing together in perfect synchronization? Does this concept translate to high-performing teams in a business setting?

Developing harmonious teams - using the symphony or string quartet as a model for leadership teams

When I submitted the idea to my faculty mentor, she invited me to present at a seminar that she is leading at Fielding's summer session on Music, Consciousness and Society. Unfortunately, I have a conflicting conference on those dates and won't be able to participate. Bummer...

For those of you who are curious about what is contained within a Fielding KA contract, I've attached the one for KA717 - Organizational Studies. You'll see how much work is involved for each KA, since it's for 10 credits.

In Dan Fox's latest column at BP, he looks at minor league outfielders using his SFR (Simple Fielding Runs) system. (You can read the primer on what it is and how it works here.) He has some pretty interesting findings, including a pretty vast disconnect between what the scouts and stats say about Cameron Maybin. Scouts love Maybin, Dan's system has him pegged as one of the worst fielders in the minors. So I guess that makes Maybin the OF/minor league version of Derek Jeter.

But scouts and stats agree on Colby Rasmus. On 535 balls hit to Rasmus, his SFR was 9.1. Baseball America said that he has game changing range and a strong throwing arm. Kevin Goldstein recently pointed out that one of Colby's weaknesses is that "he relies too much on his athleticism at times in the field, and needs to improve his reads and routes." That jives with SFR. On 264 fly balls, Colby was -2.4 SFR. On 171 line drives, Colby was + 12.3 runs, indicating his range was indeed game changing. On 515 total opportunities, Colby's arm was worth an additional 4.4 runs. When you add what he did throwing and fly catching, Colby was worth an extra 14 runs in the field. Out of all Texas League regular center fielders, Rasmus saved the most runs.

After Colby, who else did well in SFR? Prepare to be a little surprised.

Amaury Marti was 9th overall in the minors with 23.4 SFR. He saved 15.6 with his glove on 446 balls hit to him, and 7.8 runs in 525 total throwing ops while playing LF in the Mexican League. This really comes as no surprise, as Marti can play all three OF positions at the same time. The amazing thing is that he does it all barehanded while wearing ankle weights. (How else do you think he got his massive calves?)

Adjusted to 550 throwing ops and 600 fielding ops, Palm Beach's James Rapoport comes out a +24. The man's only two skills right now are strongly hinged to his speed: Fielding and stealing bases. He has 55 steals in 198 games, but just a .299 on base % and a .285 slugging %.

47th round pick Mateo Marquez was the best short season A ball outfielder with 14.2 SFR in just 150 balls. While he may field like a gold glover, he still hits like your typical 47th rounder.

Other outfielders in BA's Top 30 or Sickels Top 20

Brian Barton played most of his innings in LF in the Eastern League- 311 balls, 3 SFR. 293 ops, -5.4 throwing.

Jon Jay-81 balls, 5.6 SFR. 79 throwing ops, .2.

Joe Mather, PCL-272 balls, 5.6 SFR. 251 total throwing, -2.9. Texas-81 balls, -2.7 SFR. 80 total throwing ops, 3.7.

D'Marcus Ingram-192 balls, -7.7 SFR. 218 throwing ops, 1.4.

So we find Barton has a noodle of an arm, and Jay has pretty good range as advertised. And Joe Mather seems to do a little better then what his scouting reports suggest. Ingram's crummy score surprised me. BA said:

Ingram has a plus arm in center field, where he covers a lot of ground and has good closing speed on balls hit into the gaps.

Looks here like Mr. Stocky didn't cover quite enough ground. We'll find out if this is more of a norm for him or just an aberration.

Dan Fox rocks. I don't know if you've been following his research at BP on his new fielding metric Simple Fielding Runs or not, but it's worth the read if you don't mind hearing about some methods. Of course, the good part is when he gets to the numbers...until you find out just how bad Chris Duncan really is. On the flip side, you hear again just how good Pujols is.

Fox also just provided a download of SFR that included minor league infield data. Huge props to him.

So how did some of our infield prospects rate?

David Freese has had somewhat of a bum rap for his defense, but not so according to SFR. He's the 8th best 3B in the minors and worth about 12.3 runs.

There have been a lot of questions about Allen Craig's defense, and according to SFR he's more close to neutral then detrimental, coming up +2.7 runs. That jives with what Derrick Goold told us a few weeks ago. "He’s not great at third, he’s not a game-changer at third, but he also – according to an opposing manager – doesn’t hurt his team."

We have a couple of good fielding shortstops in Jose Martinez and Tyler Greene. Martinez came in at +8.3 and Greene at +8. (edit: Martinez also was a +6.8 at Palm Beach) That's encouraging. Last year there was talk that Greene should move to third, and this season we've been hearing that Martinez would be better at 2B. Both have more value at their current posisition. Speaking of SS's, Brendan Ryan was +3.6 for Memphis.

The best infielder in the system? Donovan Solano. He was a +12.6 at 3B for Quad Cities, and +4.3 at SS for PB. Unfortunately he has just a .589 career minor league OPS. Then again, our starting big league SS had a career .630 OPS in the minors and still has made it to the big leagues because of his defense.

So who was the worst fielder in the system last season? Thankfully, it wasn't a prospect but a minor league journeyman-New Padre Edgar Gonzalez was -13 runs. Yikes. No wonder he hasn't seen a big league at bat yet. I think he owes Blake Hawksworth and Mike Parisi an apology.

Pete Kozma wasn't great but wasn't bad. +1.9. His high school team played on turf, word is he was adjusting to a different surface. I'm optimistic he'll improve.

Jarrett Hoffpauir was also about neutral. +1.2 in AA, -1.2 in AAA.

Brian Barden was a +11 for Tucson at 3B, making him one of the better fielders in the minors.

Mark Hamilton was bad, a cumulative -4.5 between A and AA.
