Is there a unique way of how we see things? And the things that we see? I believe there is.

It has been some time that I have been on Flickr; suffice to say I have many buddies there who are excellent photographers. During my Flickr Life, I have learnt a lot about photography, much more than I would have learnt in a formal setting.

And nearly as long as I have been on Flickr, I have had a RSS reader. And I have a feed that updates all photographs from my buddies on Flickr. Since I started, with about 7 - 8 contacts, I have 97 contacts. You can imagine that the feed gets updated very fast and becomes voluminous. Sometimes I have more than 300 posts (photographs) unread (unseen).

All things become interesting after a while and you hope to read everything that you add to your feed. The feeds just pile up and you wonder if you are asking too much of yourself or you aren't reading enough.

Coming back, is there a unique way of how we see things? And the things that we see? I believe there is. And I have learnt it because of my feed reader and my Flickr contacts. With more than 300 posts piling up. I usually quickly skim through all of them. The finger on the down arrow key works with the speed of sight (light?). As i scroll quickly, my eyes are fixed on the area where the photograph is to appear; adjusting for orientation of landscape, portrait, oddly cropped, and badly cropped photos

I can almost always identify the photographer without having seen the name of the photographer in the feed. Perhaps it is a style issue. I doubt it. Many photographers I know vary their styles. I think it is just the way people see things, what they see, subjects, and their point of view. Many of the photographers take photos of flowers, for example. I can, yet, (almost always) identify who it would be.

Is it about signatures?

Do we always know what we sign? Do we know that we sign?

The solution for the width was simple, though, because the page design is fixed-width. There's no reason to include a CSS expression when you can just set the width to an exact numeric value. It's not like this code is reused in other locations that might have different sizes.

The height did still need to be dynamic, though, so JavaScript was the solution here. The document.body.clientHeight property seemed to be the most reliable way to get the window height, so I created some JavaScript code to recalculate the iframe height on page load and on resize. Just used a simple method to unobtrusively add the onLoad handler, and an analogous method for onResize.

A friend of mine once (or a hundred times) said, "I believe in love at first sight. I fall in love several times a day." For some reason it has always stuck with me. I don't consider that love at all (I don't think he really does either), but rather physical attraction. I think there is a progression in attraction, which I'll fumble through momentarily. Furthermore, I think that each stage can be described by the thoughts, feelings and actions of the person who is experiencing attraction. They are, from least to greatest: the internal acknowledgment of beauty; the expession of interest; and the pursuit of relationship.

Attraction, whether physical, spiritual, mental, or otherwise, is a tricky thing to describe, and nearly impossible to quantify. I'm not sure it is possible to put a numerical value on the things that draw your attention, but most people could list their various attractions, and possibly put them in order from least to greatest. In high school, I could have listed the top ten cutest girls at my school without too much effort. Keep in mind that I wouldn't have pursued a relationship with many of those girls...even if they had given me the time of day. Most of the time, the only interaction I had with them was when they wanted to copy my homework...which is a story for a different day.

Obviously beauty is very subjective. Some people are only concerned with others' outward appearance (which I consider fleeting and superficial, but attractive, nonetheless). Others are attracted to mental strength, such as the ability to make good conversation or to match wits. Still others are attracted to a person's spirituality or code of ethics. My personal formula for attraction (hopefully most people are this way) is an amalgam of all of the above. There are other bases for attraction, such as wealth and power, but I won't address those. We constantly gravitate towards the characteristics that we consider to be of higher importance, and tend to distance ourselves from the qualities we dislike. This can be applied to friendships, working relationships, dating, marriage, and any other type of social interaction.

Attraction begins with an internal acknowledgment of beauty in any of its forms, and varies from person to person. I consider myself blessed in the sense that I am able to acknowledge some form of beauty in almost everyone I come in contact with. Like most people, I am drawn to physical beauty. It isn't the most important thing to me, but it definitely gets my attention. A person's gender does not affect the internal acknowledgment of beauty, nor should it inhibit a verbal statement of the same. A woman can recognize another woman's good looks without actually being attracted to her. A man can appreciate another man's charisma without wanting to pursue a romantic relationship. After all, that is often where friendships begin; people are drawn to each other through acknowledgment of their qualities. I must point out that just because one person finds another to be good looking, it doesn't necessarily mean that they find them attractive. I know that Brad Pitt is a good looking guy, however, I am not attracted to him in the least bit.

Personally, I find wisdom and intelligence to be very attractive. I enjoy talking to and spending time with people who are able to make good conversation and challenge my mind to think in new ways, or cause me to see things in new light. I also place high value in the level of a person's spirituality and code of ethics. I wouldn't pursue a serious relationship with a person who was physically beautiful, yet was devoid of heart, mind and/or soul.

After the internal acknowledgment comes an expression of the attraction, whether vocal, physical, or otherwise. Some people are better at communicating their interest than others. The ability to discern how your expression will be perceived is probably more important than your intentions. I don't want to go into too much detail, but for more on the subject, The Five Love Languages is an excellent book on the expression and perception of different types of affection. Without skilled perception of others' love languages, we tend to relate our affections to others in the manner that we would have it expressed to ourselves. For example, I feel most loved when people go out of their way to spend quality time with me. If I knew very little about a person I was attracted to, I would probably want to spend time with them to show my affection. My other strong "love language" is words of affirmation. I tend to show interest in others by complimenting and encouraging. As previously mentioned, perception is more important than intention. If a person is not accustomed to being complimented, they may not receive my gesture of interest in the manner that it is intended.

While the admission of beauty is a common occurrence, the expression of interest is relatively infrequent. On any given day, I might encounter hundreds of people whom I find attractive, but I only express the interest to a few of those. In general, I tend to save compliments and shows of affection for people that I know, rather than strangers at the grocery store.

The desire for relationship is even more uncommon than expression of interest. I'm not referring to casual acquaintances, but real, genuine relationships. Most people do not have to be attracted to another person in order to carry on a superficial relationship. It is very easy to go through the motions of friendship with a person that you aren't interested in, if only for the sake of being friendly, or to get what you want out of them without commitment. This applies to both platonic and romantic associations. On a more positive note, the desire for relationship is often what brings out the best in people. Through the expression of interest, our longing to be close to others causes us to focus more on their needs than our own, and should lead us to become better friends and lovers. It is what transforms a mother or father into a mommy or daddy. It is what makes friendships work. The desire for relationship should ultimately cause us to be better people.

The pursuit of relationship is a wholly different matter. While the desire to draw close to another person may cause a person to act differently, the actual journey towards (and through) relationship changes the posture of our hearts, minds, and souls. Without strong desires to be close to others, we would be free to act in a self-centered, self-absorbed manner much of the time. Being attracted to a person doesn't require that you change the way you think or act, but once you truly desire companionship, you become willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it. Sacrifice is a key part of friendships, marriages, and all deep interpersonal bonds. It is a phenomenon known as iron sharpening iron. It is the act of dying to yourself so that you can enjoy the life of another. It is decreasing the fulfillment of your needs and wishes so that the longings of another can become reality. Please note that this is an ideal, and is not common in the pursuit of all relationships, only those with pure intentions.

The willingness to adapt to another's expectations is often what makes and breaks relationships. Say, for example, that a man and woman are deeply in love, and have decided to get married. The man is a social drinker, whereas the woman grew up in a family of alcoholics, and detests intoxication. In order for the relationship to work properly, one of the two individuals must conform to the expectations of the other. Either the man must stop drinking, or the woman must learn to accept her husband's occasional indulgence. Ultimately, pursuing another's companionship should cause us to become better people, not only in that it allows our distasteful qualities to be stripped away, but also in that it produces unity. The recognition of another's willingness toward the success of a relationship creates a further desire to examine ourselves and to adapt to meet the needs of others, so that their association can continue to grow in strength, in substance, and in love.

Once again, I must state that I am a novice in real relationships, and many of the statements I've made in the preceding paragraphs are mere musings and conjectures. I am fairly certain of my thoughts on attraction and the expression of interest, but my pursuit of relationships is extremely flawed. Like most people, I tend towards self-centeredness and self-indulgence more often than sacrifice and adaptation. I drew this image in my little note book while in flight from San Diego to Albuquerque NM. I used the Southwest magazine as reference working from an image of a guy riding a surf board. This is how I decided to use the expression for my interpretation. This is a passion expression against my own laziness. In Yoga there is a word for stagnation.

In his poem “We are Many”, Pablo Neruda explains the trouble of having “too many” personalities embedded in one. What sounds like being a trouble for the poet here, could be an advantage for an actor. An actor in his / her professional life has to live many selves. I read somewhere that an actor is an eternal patient of double identity. That is to say that when an actor acts, he is himself as well as the character that he or she portrays and has to be true to both the selves.

However what happens when an actor, on stage, in front of the live audience has to be more than two personalities. There is such an obvious danger of overlap. Well, two weeks ago I saw an innovative play which demanded a lot from the actors in this regard. The play was “El Lleig” (In English, “The Ugly one”) by German playwright Marius von Mayenburg.

The play had a very innovative structure. It didn’t have conventional acts and scenes but it rather had a continuous text format. Dialogues and lighting changed continuously without taking any pause. Except the central character of “The Ugly one”, every other actor actually represented more than one character. This should have made actors’ task extremely difficult. However, if it really did, actually it didn’t show. All the actors, especially our friend Neus Umbert, did an amazing job. At times they spoke two continuous sentences but both representing different characters. This not only lent the play a wonderful pace and rhythm but it made the visual experience of watching the play even more wonderful. A spectator can see all the rules of conventional theatre falling apart and a new “formless” form emerging on the stage. Basic issue that the play addresses is that of obsession in our society with physical or external beauty. First, the very choice of drama as a medium demonstrates possibilities of creatively expressing social problems. While the innovating form of drama adopted by the author (and beautifully delivered by actors in this case) shows that how a rather common art form can be used in an uncommon way.

Ces quelques lignes, dans le registre « prévention santé » comme on dit, trouveront, je pense, leur place dans ce blog, eu égard au mode de vie généralement bucolique, voire carrément forestier, de ses lecteurs. Je dois préciser avant toute chose que mon but n’est pas de semer la psychose ou de favoriser l’hypocondrie dans la vallée, mais uniquement de prévenir ceux ou celles qui ignorent encore, ou sous-estiment, la malignité d’un certain type de parasite. Je vous parlerai donc de ces petites bestioles que l’on rencontre de plus en plus dans les sous-bois humides en raison, paraît-il, du changement climatique ; j’ai nommé : les tiques !

Ces (gros) acariens, donc, sont eux-mêmes de plus en plus souvent (entre 20 et 30 % d’entre eux) infestés par une méchante bactérie (un spirochète, le Borrelia burgdorferi) à même de provoquer chez l’humain une non moins sale maladie, une « borréliose régionale », connue sous le nom de « maladie de Lyme » (prononcer laï’m, comme la ville américaine où sa « découverte » aurait eu lieu). Notons au passage que les ixodes (autre nom des tiques) peuvent aussi transmettre d’autres pathologies, dont on ne parlera pas ici (méningo-encéphalites, rickettsioses, formes de piroplasmose humaine, etc.).

La maladie de Lyme, classée dans les maladies émergentes (et dans le registre des maladies professionnelles), toucherait, selon des études fort incomplètes, environ 12 personnes en moyenne sur 10 000 dans l’Hexagone, mais des recherches plus systématiques dans certaines zones de France, d’Allemagne ou des États-Unis révèlent parfois un taux compris entre 200 et 300 cas pour 10 000, ce qui est tout de même loin d’être négligeable.

Des mauvaises langues disent que des malchanceux qui n’auraient jamais vu une tique pourraient tout aussi bien être victimes de cette bactérie, et rendent ainsi responsables d’autres acariens, voire des insectes, qui auraient comme point commun d’être hématophiles, c’est-à-dire de se régaler de notre sang. D’autres chercheurs sans vergogne prétendent que cette infection pourrait aussi être contractée lors d’une transfusion sanguine, et prédisent un nouveau scandale du sang contaminé – leurs recommandations de dépistage systématique n’ayant jamais été suivies par les autorités –, mauvais augure dont on leur laissera pour le moment la responsabilité.

Alors, en attendant éventuellement que les polytiques en charge de la santé publique nous resservent leur éthique formule « Responsables mais pas coupables », dont l’étique dimension démocratique ne vous aura pas échappé, il y a tout lieu de mettre en place quelques tactiques pratiques, là où on peut le faire, dans notre vie quotidienne, bien loin du pathétique hémicycle.

Précisons d’abord que tout risque de rencontrer une tique paraît être écarté au-dessus de 1 200 mètres d’altitude, ainsi qu’en dehors de la période estivale (avril-octobre) pour cause d’hibernation…

La première précaution qu’il faudrait suivre consiste donc, lors de balades en forêt, à se couvrir (le plus possible) de vêtements clairs, pour se donner toutes les chances de repérer l’ennemi avant qu’il ne se glisse jusqu’à la peau. Par ailleurs, des répulsifs efficaces (plus ou moins naturels ou chimiques suivant les marques) existent dans le commerce, contre tiques et aoûtats.

De retour de promenade, de randonnée (ou de sieste) forestière, une fois rentré dans ses pénates, il est important de procéder à une inspection générale de façon à traquer l’intrus qui, comme chacun sait, aime à s’accrocher dans les replis de la peau, là où cette dernière est bien tendre. Un risque subsiste néanmoins : la larve, elle, est très petite et peut échapper à l’examen le plus minutieux. Une douche très chaude est conseillée, puisque les tiques ne la supportent pas et se décrochent généralement à ce moment (il est admis par beaucoup qu’une tique retirée de la peau dans les premières heures suivant son installation n’a pas le temps de transmettre les bactéries).

En cas de piqûre, la pratique habituelle consiste à se rendre chez son médecin, qui prescrira alors une petite cure d’antibiotiques (prophylaxie déconseillée par l’institut Pasteur), après avoir désinfecté la plaie. Une autre méthode existe, qui repose sur l’utilisation d’une recette naturelle (aromathérapie) commercialisée sous la marque Tic-Tox. Il suffirait alors d’appliquer ce produit avec un coton ou une compresse sur la vilaine bébête, pour l’estourbir en quelque deux à trois minutes, avant de la « dévisser » à l’aide d’une pince à épiler, ou mieux un « levier à tiques » (en vente chez votre pharmacien), en tournant dans le sens inverse des aiguilles d’une montre. Le Tic-Tox contiendrait par ailleurs des principes actifs capables de tuer les redoutables bactéries, raison pour laquelle on conseille une application renouvelée du produit sur la petite plaie, que l’on protégera ensuite avec un sparadrap. (La vieille méthode de l’asphyxie par l’éther est à rejeter, la tique déglutissant toutes ses saloperies – les bactéries avec – sous la peau au moment où elle tombe dans les vapes.)

Le début de la borréliose se signale généralement – mais pas toujours – par ce qu’il est convenu d’appeler un « érythème migrant », bien visible et remarquable grâce à son point rouge (là où la tique s’est régalée) et son auréole bien large de la même couleur. « Pas toujours » : là est le problème de cette maladie qui mérite son surnom de « grande imitatrice » car elle provoque autant de combinaisons de symptômes qu’il y a de personnes touchées.

On peut ainsi contracter (ou pas) une péricardite (inflammation de la paroi du cœur se manifestant par de violentes douleurs thoraciques et disparaissant d’elle-même) dans les quelques semaines qui suivent la piqûre. Ensuite, la maladie peut ne pas se manifester pendant plusieurs mois, voire de nombreuses années. Un jour ou l’autre, elle se réveille sournoisement, et ses symptômes, qui peuvent donc prendre des formes extrêmement variées, apparaissent. Un état de fatigue anormal, quasi permanent, accompagné d’insistantes douleurs articulaires, constitue un dénominateur (presque) commun. Parfois, les bactéries retournent se coucher, plus ou moins longtemps, pour reprendre des forces, ce qui peut faire croire en un état de santé restauré.

Les contraintes de la médecine actuelle interdisant la plupart du temps une prise en compte globale de l’état de santé de ses consommateurs, les professionnels traiteront alors, s’ils ne sont pas sensibilisés à cette pathologie, chacun des symptômes séparément selon leur ordre d’apparition, et diagnostiqueront ainsi des maladies qu’ils connaissent (le saucissonnage et la spécialisation étant aussi des maladies de notre temps). État dépressif, arthrite, arthrose, sciatique, spondylarthrite ankylosante, dermatoses, problèmes du transit intestinal, migraine, problèmes du rythme cardiaque, tels sont les diagnostics les plus répandus puisque les symptômes correspondants sont les plus courants chez les personnes atteintes.

À ce stade, le patient a toutes les chances (si l’on peut dire) d’être considéré comme un malade imaginaire, une dame Cerfeuil (vous savez, celle qui, lorsqu’elle n’a pas mal au c…, a mal à l’œil), et son état généralement dépressif favorisant les interprétations psychosomatiques pourra même le rendre mûr pour la psychiatrie et la chimie qui va avec, là où notre système de soins est, comme chacun sait, bien sympathique.

Dans la phase très avancée, après de longues années, les diagnostics pourront évoluer parallèlement à l’aggravation de la maladie et aller jusqu’à : confusion mentale, schizophrénie, mais aussi cardiopathies lourdes, sclérose en plaques, méningite, Parkinson (si, si)… car les bactéries pourront se mettre à attaquer très sérieusement les sphères cardiaque, neurologique ou le cerveau. Allons, détendez-vous (tiens, allez faire un tour en forêt, rien de tel pour se remonter le moral), il existe des solutions avant d’en arriver là, si las.

Nous avons vu plus haut qu’en raison des caractéristiques mêmes de la maladie et du déficit de sensibilisation à cette pathologie chez un grand nombre de praticiens, le diagnostic véritable se fait souvent attendre bien longtemps, en tout cas suffisamment pour que l’évolution de la borréliose se réalise tranquillement. On ne saurait que trop conseiller aux personnes ressentant une mystérieuse fatigue chronique (grande lassitude, difficultés de concentration…) et souffrant de courbatures inexplicables, de douleurs articulaires (généralement sensibles aux genoux) de demander à leur (bon) médecin une prescription d’analyse sanguine pour une recherche d’anticorps spécifiques à l’infection par le spirochète en question. Malheureusement, l’analyse n’est pas fiable à 100 %, loin s’en faut, mais les subtilités liées au fonctionnement des anticorps et autres marqueurs dépassent mes compétences…

Admettons donc que ces résultats d’analyse et/ou le tableau clinique ne laissent que peu de doute sur la réalité de la pathologie… (Précisons au passage que l’entourage du malade sera lui aussi impatient que se profile une solution, épuisé qu’il est par les plaintes quotidiennes de la victime sur le thème « J’ai la rate qui s’dilate, etc. » mais ressassées sur un rythme beaucoup plus lancinant et moins entraînant que celui du comique troupier.)

La solution généralement proposée par la médecine « officielle » se basera alors sur une antibiothérapie maousse costaud (un mois au moins de Vibramycine, par exemple) qui, selon ses détracteurs, décimerait bien une grosse partie des bactéries, mais aurait le défaut de forcer les survivantes à se tapir à l’abri de l’arme de destruction massive dans les globules rouges (entre autres), d’où elles pourraient un jour ou l’autre fomenter de nouvelles offensives. Quant aux dégâts collatéraux…

Les partisans inconditionnels de la phyto-aromathérapie et autres anti-antibiotiques, moins à l’aise avec la terminologie militaire opteront quant à eux pour un traitement à base de principes actifs naturels, comme ceux que contiennent la racine de cardère, Uncaria tomentosa, ou encore… le Tic-Tox. Certains praticiens pensent de leur côté que les deux démarches sont complémentaires ; je me garderai bien ici, quant à moi, de lancer le débat… À éviter comme la peste, en tout cas : les anti-inflammatoires, qui renforceraient les mécanismes de défense des borrélies. On recommande par ailleurs un régime alimentaire plutôt porté sur les fruits, légumes et crudités, l’ail, thé vert… ; d’éviter l’alcool (qui aggraverait les symptômes) et les dérivés du lait de vache (créant un milieu acide favorisant les manifestations inflammatoires au niveau articulaire…) ; de remplacer si possible le blé par le sarrasin, l’épeautre, le quinoa, le riz, etc.

Le Tic-Tox, donc… Cette préparation, faite d’huiles essentielles, de propolis, etc., conçue au départ pour une utilisation préventive en application locale, serait aussi efficace dans le cadre d’une démarche curative en administration interne (quelques gouttes dans un verre d’eau, trois ou quatre fois par jour, pendant deux à trois mois) grâce à ses propriétés antibactériennes et antiseptiques, reconnues de façon presque unanime mais peu explicitées d’un point de vue scientifique.

Arrêtons là ce qui commence à ressembler à un publi-reportage déguisé pour un produit dont finalement on ne connaît pas grand-chose… Voici quand même quelques adresses en rapport avec mon sujet ; et j’ajouterai que, si vous disposez d’infos ou d’expérience sur ce thème, je suis preneur.
