If experts are explicitly identified, then they have either named themselves or someone else identified them for others; this method has pros and cons.  On a positive note, they are usually easier to find as they have been "published" or "promoted".  For example, company X lists Bob Y as the expert on integration.  More often than not, the expertise will be genuine.  On the con side, this method often relies on things like tenure and/or academic distinctions.  I don't know about you, but these people may not experts in the way I need their expertise.  They may be book smart or "talk real good", but couldn't execute their way out of a paper bag.  One example that comes to mind are PMPs (Project Management Professionals).  The process for getting PMP certified is difficult and time consuming.  In theory, people who pass this test and go through the process should be top notch project managers.  Well, I'm here to tell you this is not necessarily true.  I've met many a PMP who couldn't manage my kid's birthday party much less a complicated project.  My point is you can't always rely on explicit expert identification.

The other method is implicit.  Experts are identified implicitly through their actions, reputation and performance.  We all know these people in the places we work, schools we've attended and so on.  They simply know their shit and have the answer when you need it.  There isn't a formal way to find these people.  You can find them by asking around and working with them.  The con for this method is it is often difficult to find them since they aren't obvious or promoted.

GroupSwim finds experts using the implicit method.  The software takes the content in a collaboration site, and analyzes the tags, the rating, and the people submitting the content to figure out who the experts are by tag or topic.  For example, Joe H. is an expert using the Gruntmaster 2000.  He submitted a couple of documents he created.  He answered a bunch of questions about the Gruntmaster that people asked.  And, he contributed to several wikis and templates for using the Gruntmaster effectively.  Our software monitored all this activity.  It observed that most of Joe's contributions were read, downloaded, watched, forwarded, voted positively on, etc.  We can determine through the group that Joe belongs to that the information pertaining to the Gruntmaster 2000 that he provided is valuable.  Over time, when we see these patterns emerge consistently, we can attribute authority on the Gruntmaster 2000 to Joe.  We've done our best, and continue to refine, the technology to perform this service.  The benefit here is when someone using GroupSwim searches on Gruntmaster 2000, Joe's names comes up as an expert.  His expertise is very likely to be authentic based on the groups positive reaction to his contributions.

While neither way is perfect, we've decided to follow the implicit approach that relies on earned expertise.  Nobody gets to be an expert until their peers and colleagues say so, through their actions.

I think we forget that a lot. We strive to make a clever, robust and appealing home page without spending nearly as much time on the interior pages. Perhaps we should all take a close look at our site's interior pages - especially the landing pages - and treat them as if they were our home page. Just a thought.

Now The New York Times physics and cosmology reporter Dennis Overbye has weighed in on the matter in his recent "talk to the newsroom" Q & A with readers. Check it out -- it's a good read, as are his two books. (Full disclosure -- Dennis and I go way back; I was a cub reporter at Discover when he was writing there back in the early 1980s, and he and I collaborated on one article, I think, back then; we've since connected through a mutual interest in Einstein.)

The whole session is interesting, but this early exchange caught my eye, especially given the identity of the questioner:

Becoming a Science Reporter

Q. Do you think a degree in the sciences is necessary to be a science reporter? Is it most important in generating story ideas or in translating "geek speak" into language that most readers understand? Does your editor also have a degree in science?

I love reading Science Times and pounce on the stories when they come across the wire — as do others on the copy desk of The Roanoke (Va.) Times.

A. Ah, an easy one.

The first thing you need to be a science reporter is a sense of humor because things will sound weird and then they will get even weirder. You are just going to sound foolish and you might as well get used to it. Luckily the scientists will not mind foolish questions for a few reasons. First of all, they are used to thinking of themselves as pretty smart and the people questioning them as, umm, not so smart. Secondly, being the kind of people who could stay up all night obsessing about an anomalous result in an experiment or an equation that didn't quite work out, they can recognize and appreciate a similar ruthless determination to understand on the part of someone who is interviewing or photographing them. I've seen photographers coax sober minded physicists into rearranging their furniture and assuming all kinds of cockeyed poses — all in the name of getting the "right picture."

Finally, there really isn't any such thing as a silly question in science, where the best people often are those who are free enough to think up a really outlandish question. Einstein said his success was due to the fact that he kept asking a child's questions when he was an adult. I am reminded of what Niels Bohr once said, "We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question which divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."

What does this have to do with your question? If you know too much going in as a journalist, it might serve you well, but not your readers, for whom you are the surrogate. I do see more and more people in my field who have Ph.D.s, but I don't think it is the degree that makes them good, rather it's the ability to be inquisitive, to learn on the spot, to size up people and to get them to talk.

The higher you go in science, the more you know about less and less, which is hardly a good prescription for a reporter, unless you have the prerequisite skills anyway. One of my colleagues, Jim Glanz, has a Ph.D. in physics from Princeton, but it didn't stand in his way and now he is the Baghdad bureau chief. A random survey of my colleagues on a sleepy afternoon turned up college degrees in rhetoric, English literature, general liberal arts, and then law, as well as journalism, biochemistry and physics.

None of my editors have a degree in science, although they might have taken some courses. One of my former editors, Cornelia Dean, now a reporter, wound up in the science department after someone saw her with a copy of Scientific American. So you can learn a lot from reading, a concept we're fond of here at the newspaper.

We're excited to announce that for our first interview series of posts, Harry Collins and Rob Evans have graciously agreed to answer a number of questions for us about their program to establish a "third wave" in the sociology of science: Studies of Expertise and Experience (SEE). The essential reading on the topic is their book, published last year, Rethinking Expertise.

It's fast reading, but if you want a quicker tour, take a look at this interview with Harry Collins from American Scientist, and also the official SEE web site, which has all the background reading and primers you could want.

SEE, as I understand it, is still not widely accepted among sociologists of science, but the insights jibe with a lot of thinking I've been doing on problems of science & scientific thought and policymaking for my work on operations research and other policy sciences. So I'm happy to do whatever propaganda work for it I can. The questions, though, will be probing rather than passive, and I hope readers will chime in on the comments sections. When expats came to GSPI, however, they introduce another management technique: MBAW for "Management By Asking Why" Apparently, this method is practiced by all of these GSPI's expats that local employees became exasperated of the chorus of "why is this?" and "why is that?" questions from seemingly "expert" people who were hired as expert managers in offering constructive ideas to solve problems and not become incorrigible problems themselves. Some of these "why" questions are so ridiculous that I have included them for ridiculousness' sake.

I have compiled herewith the answers to all their "why's?"

Q: Why is this connected to this?
A: Because THAT is not connected to THIS!

Q: Why are no spares available to replace these defective parts?
A: Because you have not provide money to purchase new spares!

Q: Why was I not told about this?
A: Because telling you would not make any difference. You will not act on it anyway!

Q: Why was I kept in the dark of this problem?
A: Same answer as above!

Q: Why are people covering their noses when I'm in the room?
A: Because they can't stand how your mixed essence of body odor, underarm odor, and re-used clothing smell.

Q: Why do you want expats to clear out of the room during troubleshooting an equipment failure?
A: Because expats are too nosy asking why and doesn't have any iota of good suggestions to effectively troubleshoot the problem!

Q: Why was I not invited to that meeting?
A: Because your attendance only increases the chance of arguing a point close to nowhere and thus do not resolve the problem on hand.

Q: Why do people sleep when there are no materials to process?
A: We all have eyes that go tired of looking at nowhere and eventually they will fall asleep on their own.

Q: Why do Filipinos opts for Sunday as their Rest Days?
A: Because, being mostly Catholic, Sunday is God's Day of Worship, while Sundays for you is only a going-to-the-market day!

Q: Why is a work on a Rest Day considered Overtime?
A: Because that's provided by Philippine labor laws!

Q: Why do they mock my expertise?
A: Because you call yourself "expert" but doesn't know anything about the subject that you claim you are an expert of!

Q: Why is your nose too sensitive to foul odors?
A: Because I always take a bath before coming to work, while you only do so whenever your holy boss is coming to visit!

Q: Why are the rank and file demanding for their pay and salary?
A: Because they have already worked for that months ago, and they have mouths to feed and bills to pay, unlike your lot who lives off the company's luxury!

I'm headed to South Carolina this week, for SNA. On Thursday I'll be meeting in Columbia with the J-school professors and director of Ifra Newsplex at USC.  I'm going to be talking with Director Randy Covington and also with Professor Doug Fisher, one of the authors of "Principles of Convergent Journalism."  While I'm about halfway through the book (reading it in the airport right now) I've found it so far to be a great text book for newspaper, radio and TV journalists who need to learn how to become what the authors call "multi-skilled journalists" and others have referred to as"back pack journalists" or, my personal favorite, MoJos (mobile journalists.) 

Journalists, publishers, editors, photojournalists either staff or freelance,  and journalism students should all go out and buy this book.  It's a tool you'll return to time and again. More on Ifra Newsplex after my visit.
