This week, I’m a bit more sure of this particular broadcast’s direction– sans Coke

This week, I'm a bit more sure of this particular broadcast's direction-- sans Coke, it's moving into something a bit more methodical than normal. Maybe a little slower? Hard to tell just yet, but I suspect I'm hearing things a little differently. At any rate, it should be fun to compare this playlist to others at the conclusion.

I'm really pleased with this New Haven Improvisers Collective disc, "Interference." It's a solid document of two improvised sets, and does an excellent job of getting a decent sound across to listeners. I'm guessing this is a well-organized collective, as this is the first release for their own NHIC Records imprint.

Right now, I'm playing some of Eddie the Rat's "Food For the Moon Too Soon" album. This is also a live document, but has a surprisingly good sound quality, especially given the wide variety of instrumentation utilized throughout. Eddie the Rat is among the handful groups I'm sure I'll never tire of hearing. The music always seems fresh, wholly original, and vitally necessary-- any one of which is commendable by itself!

Ack. I just said a lot of really nice things about Rothkamm's new "Opus Spongebobicum" disc-- with the mic off. Well, at least there was a dramatic bit of silence before the start, eh? But seriously, I was mentioning that I am grateful and fortunate to be able to present Rothkamm's work to you, as I sincerely believe he is one of the great talents of our time. I'm amazed at not only his prolific nature, but the high quality of his musical output-- perhaps a Rothkamm-centric broadcast is in order for next month?

Boy, this Bearly Queen "Hair Palm Adventure" sounds like how my head felt yesterday-- slow, murky, and muddled. But since the BQ is coming out of a speaker, I think I like it a lot better! Someone dropped off a bunch of cassette tapes here at the station "free cassettes" so naturally, I went through the entire box one by one. I found a 30-second answering machine tape, and did a little looping with the Bearly Queen material, just for fun. This is a great album, and definitely my favorite for the label, Finland's Luovaja. Don't sleep on this one!

I suppose I will mention my last article.

It came out well -- to say the least. That last part was unnecessary.

Anyways, it was an interesting process. I discovered a new stereotype: experimental musicians are even more awkward than "normal" musicians. Imagine that.

I interviewed a lot more people than were in the story, but maybe the extra bodies were unnecessary.

There is an interesting documentary about the Action Research movement, which I will put here (as well as a link to the story).

Action Research story

That is it for the night. I started too late. Vague promises of more later.

I've been hijacked into a "band" of sorts, one of those late-night jokes that somehow becomes reality, mostly due to the ease with which the net makes these things possible. So you'll forgive me when you find out that the band is named "Cosmic Twilight Pimps"-- I had nothing to do with it!

I would have suggested an awesome name like "Muck," but it's already taken.

I just found out about the CTP last week, when I accepted their/our friend request. I had to, seeing as how I'm apparently in the group. I left myself a comment, and later got the full story from co-founder (and Sweet Action Radio host) Nick... in a nutshell, CTP seems to encompass whatever random oddmusic made between our respective broadcasts, as well as some 4-track noodling going on in some Carbondale basement.

Did I mention we have a video?

Tom made this one during the ill-fated broadcast of March 8, 2008. I was supposed to have a live guest, but he didn't arrive, so I was stuck with a studio full of ears on a gradient from fan to foe. Getting folks to come see a live set at 4 AM is no easy feat-- and it really hurts the future chances of being able to do so when the musician in question fails to show up!

Naturally, I was pissed. Partly, I was upset because I had no control over the situation, and partly because I was letting so many listeners down. I decided to channel my feelings into something a bit more constructive than pacing, and whipped out a rather bold sound mix using whatever I had, and whatever sounded right at the time.

Tom, a local treasure for his ceaseless work documenting musicians and artists on video, had been well-prepared to do the same for our AWOL musician. In the end, he captured the vast majority of the morning on video... at the time, I couldn't imagine anything worthwhile coming out of these hours of footage, but I was mistaken. Enjoy this-- and be sure to leave Tom a comment, too!

Independence Day ran a little late for me, so I didn't end up finding time to dig out all my firework-related programming-- no biggie, though-- I've still got a lot of great stuff I want to play. I started the show with something from Glenn Weyant, "Epistemological Grounds," which makes use of some train recordings to nice effect... it also is holding the "train" theme in mind for me, having made a large portion of my previous week. I'll have some video evidence to back this up by Monday. While I'm at it, I'll have more of Weyant later in this broadcast!

Up next was Diamondhead, with their Eh? Records release "Dirty Realism." Not a lot of flow between these two on an obvious level, but it's what I wanted to hear, so I imagine listeners can deal. Oh, station break!

Well, I'm back. I've sorta been running two shows simultaneously for the past hour and a half-- one for everyone out there in listener-land, and the other for some WDBX folks who happened to be in the Hi-Life Room this morning. That's one of the great things about having a show here, just being able to pick people's brains about new music, new sounds, etc... and of course, sharing some things I'm excited about as well. Lots of behind-the-scenes today, haha!

Eventually, I'm going to have to do my "stereo show" with two separate broadcasts-- one for each channel. I need to look into how I will accomplish this without destroying the studio, though.

Right now, I'm playing from Laminae's "The Green Kingdom," (scratch that, reverse it! "Laminae" is the name of the album) which is the brand-new release on The Land Of. This is a label I'm very fond of mentioning to everyone, so if you haven't managed to visit them online, I suggest you do that ASAP.

Next up, I'm going to play a small set of Aaron Jones' work-- he's part of semi-local band Maggotapplewonderland. I'll be playing more of their work this coming week, from their newest release "Shards of Subtle Being."

I'm going to close the broadcast with the Glenn Weyant, as promised. This is from the latest installment of the Sonic Anta D-Construction Sound Subscription Service, which is a bitch to type, but a joy to hear. I thought I had everything when my double disc set of experimental bagpipe ensemble music arrived, but "Electric Fan Sound Works" put me over the moon. Thanks, Glenn! As per his request in the liner notes, I'm letting listeners live it up with the full 30-minute recording. See you next week!

Via one of Ralph Lichtensteiger's posts on the Silence list yesterday, I was introduced to a fun online tool for generating word clouds-- Wordle. I've generally found tag clouds fairly useless, and an unnecessarily obtuse method for page navigation, but Wordle has a simple interface that lets users enter their own text for the cloud generation... I ended up entering three months worth of playlists, one at a time! My results are below, along with a meta-cloud featuring the entire three months combined, and a final cloud with multiple years worth of my early playlists.

These get a little squished with the blog's formatting, so click the cloud for the full-size version, okay?

This first cloud is from April 26, 2008. As you can see, I was playing a lot of George Korein's "Another Corpse" album!

I like the vaguely Greek lettering style for this cloud, from the April 4, 2008 broadcast. It's fitting, given the conversation I was having with a Greek sound engineer that week about Brekekekexkoaxkoax, so I was amused when this font was randomly selected.

Here is the cloud for the April 12, 2008 broadcast. I'm having fun reading it as a poem: "Everything long, young girl eyesore." Sounds like my spam filter!

From the April 19, 2008 broadcast... Karthik Kakarala ends up making the cloud without being played on the show-- one of the perks of visiting the Hi-Life Room and nearly giving me a heart attack!

This is a good-looking cloud! Very "Times," don't you think? I also like the juxtaposition of "station, studio, beehive" in the upper right. How appropriate! Taken from the May 3, 2008 playlist.

I didn't do much actual liveblogging for the May 17, 2008 broadcast; I'll let this cloud speak for me. I wish "feral" showed up in more tag clouds...

The May 24, 2008 playlist generated this cloud-- it's funny how the thing I remember most about this broadcast (playing from the Bearly Queen disc near the end of the set) hardly shows up in the cloud. And Bikelophone is huge, haha! If the cloud only knew the Bikelophone track was just a few minutes long, versus BQ's 18-minute monster...

Wow, I made a lot of these things. I sure hope you like Wordle clouds, 'cause I'm shoving them down your throat. This is made from the June 14, 2008 playlist. Again, it's very difficult not to read as a poem: "Much nice ITDE sound download / miss work, got birds like cello intertwined."

Looks like I played some of The Harmful Free Radicals, eh? Made from the June 21, 2008 set.

One day after the previous cloud, I did the June 22, 2008 broadcast-- turned in this set, which is quite different in scope.

This was the result of combing all the above playlists, minus common English words. For some reason, this reminds me of Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" movie poster.

Here's the biggie-- many years worth of my playlists... I think I used 2006, 2005, and some from 2003. Entering these in was a pain in the ass, because there was no easy way to get rid of my original +++ used to separate playlist entries. Anyhow, it's a nice birdseye look at my show's earlier days. Feel free to leave links to your Wordle clouds in the comments section!

If you've been keeping up with my liveblogged playlists, you're already aware that I've been looking into adding Skypecasts to my ever-expanding repotoire of broadcasting options. After a few trial broadcasts, I'm convinced this could be a useful tool, despite the fact that it's a bit more clumsy than I'd like.

As with any medium, Skypecasting has unique strengths and weaknesses. On the positive end, I can schedule a Skypecast for pretty much any time of day, and for any duration. Listeners can also join in, as a Skypecast is more like a big conference call than the one-way street that is normal radio. I'm looking forward to hearing you as much as I hope you enjoy hearing my broadcasts!

However, listeners have to install Skype in order to listen at all-- it's free, but I'm not sure how many people will be willing to do this.

The biggest drawback for me is how I have to set the audio options. As I vastly prefer having multiple sources from which to source music for my broadcasts, I have been using at least two instances of a music player program during the Skypecasts. However, this necessitates setting my computer's stereo mix as the recording source-- this means that I can't use my microphone to speak with listeners without switching away from the music entirely. It's also fairly clumsy, with me bopping back and forth in my PC's recording settings control window. Anyone know a way around this? I wonder if there's a plugin or little app that could make this easier.

So how many STARTLING MONIKER readers would check out a Skypecast? Discuss it all by yourself, with the single anemic comment that this post will likely engender...

So, this has been quite a long hiatus. Part of the time I have been in Japan; part of it has been spent laying around being lazy.

I now write for "The Alligator" doing mostly music related stories. My last published story was a local album review on The Early Twenties. I hope to do more local albums reviews in the future.

The Early Twenties review

A story about Glypher -- the man behind Gainesvillebands.com

A series of reviews that was published while I was in Japan

I like listening to rap while writing stories. I imagine it looking funnier than it probably does. I make playlists based on what I think will go well with my keyboard tapping and then wonder how it effects my writing -- if at all.

Lately, I have been working on a story about experimental music and an organization trying to gather experimental musicians in Gainesville. It has been a leisurely pursuit with a far off deadline.

I listened to a lot of Japanese music while out of the States. I find that most genres in Japan seem to be tainted by the corny earnestness of pop music. Permed and straightened hair, bland cliche beats catered to every type of song, voices that fluctuate at the exact right moment, etc. Just the way the culture views music seems different. In Japan, you can rent CDs like movies. I see the industry there as attention defect, with the market moving quickly and the devotion of the audience fleeting. It is amusing to see covers of American songs translated into Japanese.

I sang in a karaoke booth. I had watched my family before, but had never participated. "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles and some Talking Heads songs were among the selections. My uncle sang some hair metal band he remembered from his youth. My mother and him sang a pretty duet together. My little cousin sang his favorite theme songs from cartoons and children's television shows. I drank melon soda out of a tiny cup and my youngest cousin attempted to stick his hand in it to grab ice. The microphone tended to exaggerate lows and highs, making my mother sound like Barry Manilowe at times and like Alvin the chipmunk at others. It had a lot of reverb on it to mask any bad voice, but to me that tended to make it worse. I was never a karaoke person, but I guess I can say I have done it now -- in the true form before it was popularized, butchered and repackaged in the States.

Back in Gainesville: one bandmate has left and one has returned. I hope my band takes off in some respect. I just want to play shows again. I am thinking that this will happen in the fall, when everyone is conveniently here and less flighty.

And those are my musical shenanigans. Later, I will write about some new artists I have found along the way.

Update: OMG, I actually recorded this broadcast, and am now offering it for a free download. It

Update: OMG, I actually recorded this broadcast, and am now offering it for a free download. It's not nearly as high quality as the originals, so if you like something, be sure to get a real copy. This download is taken directly from the webstream, and is a 64 kbps mp3 file-- about 68 megs.

Well, I'm managing to keep up the playlist and liveblog... granted, not with a whole lot to say here so far this week. I started off this "It's Too Damn Early" with a Blossoming Noise release, Miss High Heel's "The Family's Hot Daughter." Not a bad way to clearly demarcate one show from the next, eh?

With little regard for flow, I proceeded on to Object, a much more quietly nuanced release on Eh? Records. I'm a sucker for any recording utilizing balloon as a sound source, so this was a natural pick for me.

At present, I've got the Mystified disc "Crank" spinning-- this is his first for the Power Silence label, which is quickly becoming one of my favorites to watch. So far, all the PS releases I've heard have featured high-quality work, and seem to benefit from some picky selection. I haven't heard a lot of Mystified's beat-based material, but I enjoy the remix of Metek's "Infrastructure" included here... it's a track with an odd pedigree, the current remix most likely arising from an earlier Metek/Mystified/Pythagora split where Metek constructed it from Mystified samples!

Just got done playing a nice little mini cdr from GRKZGL, courtesy his recent Canadian care package. On-air, I promised details of how to acquire copies of this nifty little disclet-- looks like you may have to e-mail him: grkzgl AT gmail.com ... Next week, I hope to get a chance to play from another of his recordings, "C'est de la Marde," which you will no doubt enjoy.

It looks as though I will more or less close out this broadcast with "For Birds, Planes & Cello," a lovely work from Miya Masaoka and Joan Jeanrenaud on the brand-new Solitary B label. I am quite impressed with the quality of their first two releases-- the other being "While I Was Walking I Heard A Sound..." which features Amy X Neuberg (one of my favorites, AND we share an inital!) among other vocalists in a unique setting. I'll get to this one next week, so be sure to tune in. That's not to say this show hasn't been without highlights! I'm already envisioning a little home mix I may put together with "For Birds, Planes & Cello" intertwined with some Francisco Lopez and Annea Lockwood materials...

How about a little more? I've got a nice advance copy of RP Collier's "Deconstruction of Twilight," an ambient guitar work very much different from what I've previously heard of Collier's work. As you may recall, I'm mighty choosy with ambient recordings, but this one has definitely made the cut. I'll have about 15 minutes of show time remaining, so instead of closing with one sort of ambient sound, I'll finish with another. Enjoy it!

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this essay is to examine the aesthetic behind Cage's "silent" composition, 4'33", to trace its history, and to show that it marked a significant change in John Cage's musical thought -- specifically how it forms a point-of-no-return from the conventional communicative, self-expressive and intentional purpose of music to a radical new aesthetic that informs the field of unintentional sound, interpenetration, chance, and indeterminacy. The compositional process is described, both the writing of 4'33" and its evolution from past thought. Implications for performance are examined, and recommendations are made.

on the 2 January 1492 the Andaluz city of Granada fell to a besieging army of christian Celts and franks ending 750 years of Arab civilisation in the Iberian Peninsula. What had become a haven of learning, culture and tolerance met the kind of violent end that was to characterise christian expansion; with papal approval Arab, morisco (mixed christian and Arab) and Jewish populations were indiscriminately slaughtered, the libraries and universities torched...

To celebrate the occasion a pageant known as a 'Moresca' was devised; a Celtic dance describing the fate of the Moors (Arabs) at the hands of the victorious christians. The Moresca spread throughout christian Europe, changing name as it passed through regions and languages; morisques (F), moriskentanz (D), moreška (Ju), morisca i(I), arriving as 'Morris' in fifteenth century England.

Ever since, 'Morris' has been seen in the UK as quintessentially English in that peculiar way the English have of defining English-ness through foreign imports; St George (Turkish), Morris (Spanish), Royal Family (German), Churchill (half American), The Mini (Greek designer) - and why not, we are a mongrel race, despite what the BNP would have us believe...

Apart from a modern addition of the Concertina to the traditional line-up of pipe and drum , the musical form of Morris has changed little...until now. Breaking with 'tradition', radical new forms of Morris appear to be developing including 'Goth Morris' an obscure blend of satanic ritual and Morris dance which despite it's neo pagan pretensions adheres rigidly to standard musical form. Conversely the more recently 'Free Morris' movement eschews all traditional form and is recognisable as true Morris only by retaining Morris-like instrumentation; concertinas, hand drums and flutes and the occasional symbolic items of clothing; blacked faces and orange ribbons; all else is obscured by a raucous field of free improvisation and spontaneous 'dance'. Free Morris reveals by a process of cultural erosion the history of violence deeply embedded within Morris and thereby all nationalist tradition.

If you go back in time to my earlier entries you will find some interesting stories about Notting Hill in the 60s and 70s and also Anti-Media activities in the 80s , bits about the gigs before Club Dog etc....

However I have been having problems with technology and the Dave Russell interviews being repeatedly deleted .

Therefore I have re-issued part one of this interview on Youtube. It's the first time I have ever done anything like this so don't expect miracles!

Enjoy ! and to read onthe background to the things mentioned in this interview go back to my previous post called

There are 2 things i like to talk about this magic number:-)

Most people will think selling 40 copies of cds is nothing, i think so too, at the begining. Then (whoever that tried) knew that that's no true. Selling 40 copies of cds is not easy. If a distro are willing to carry 5 copies, you will need to look for 8 distros. And if you are in the market you know 8 distros are a big number. And further more is, no many distro will carry 5 copies, they take 3 or 4. Mostly on consignment, then they send you the cds back after years.

On the other hands, most people will think that the musician(s) will not interested in making 40 copies limited edition cdR. That's partly correct, because some of them do too, the idea behind of the WHY NOT LTD is to make the good recording available, to see the daylight, even just a limited copy, and the musician can re-release the album else where on other label, on net etc... so why not??

Finally found some time to blog about my trip to the NIME (New Interfaces for Musical Expression) conference in Genoa, Italy a couple of weeks back. The conference was organised and hosted this year by Casa Paganini - InfoMus Lab, DIST, Università degli Studi di Genova, at various venues around Genoa, consisting of 3 days of paper, poster and demo sessions with concert and club performances in the evening.

These are some of my highlights, I will post links to all the relevant papers once they are published on the NIME web site

The cover image of the re-issue was taken by me from the backyard of the Deserted Village when i visiting Dublin (and did a lot of recording session with them and many others) in 2004.

Today i spent a few hours to work on a minor update on the webpage, in the beginning i thought it was an easy job. The beginning mean the day i started the webpage. So you can tell i m not a pro, and you're right, i m not a pro, not on web design, not even on computer.

And WNL did not own a web domain, Herbal International too, we still using the geocities.com, and we are not allow to make a direct link from wiki... (...am i complaining?)

But hey, Why Not Ltd hit 20 releases by now! With the new release of Birgit Ulher and Heddy Boubaker, and W98, we have 21 releases! We have range from electronic, techno, to electro-acoustic improv, field recording, noise... and we are still open to proposal, we know there are still a lot talented or talentless (who cares?) out there, send us your master piece! We look forward for 50 release in 5 years... or maybe shorter.

Welcome!

Why Not Ltd is a 40 copies limited edition cdR release, focus on experimental music in general.

Brief History

WNL was started in mid 2005, the idea came about in the morning before i have lunch, i was in the studio and the idea just came:"Hey, Why not have a series of cdR release in limited edition? You can have it in small amount so that you wounldn't have to have problem with the stock, and you can release whatever you like!"

Yeah, why not?

So that's how i started WNL, there is nothing fancy, at first it was just a new series from Herbal, the parent label, but soon it shown the potential to stay alone as a label.

No so long later, we received more demo proposal then Herbal ever, so we have to come up with the demo policy (which we never have this problem with Herbal)

Demo Policy (pls read this before you contact us regarding the related subject)

1, NO DEMO, send us MASTERPIECE. if we like it we will release it straight away, maybe in 24 hours. don't send us anything which no ready for release.

2, DON'T ASK. We will let you know if we are going to release it, it will take 1 hour to 5 years for us to decide.

3, WE Will NOT PAY ARTIST(S). even if we release your stuff, you only get the product, no cash. yes, we are making money out of you, take this to your consideration before you send us anything.

We have our own geocities.com webpage too, stay alone from Herbal :o)

From now on i will add info about the release one by one, even though most of them are out of print, but who know, from time to time i have something back in stock.

Thank you for reading!
