On July 18, 2008, Richard Weikart writes about The Dehumanizing Impact of Modern Thought: Darwin, Ma

On July 18, 2008, Richard Weikart writes about The Dehumanizing Impact of Modern Thought: Darwin, Marx, Nietzsche, and Their Followers. Allow me to summarize Weikart's position: Modern science and the philosophy based on these findings are killing humanity. Weikart starts by quoting a holocaust survivor(Viktor Frankl) who believes that the action taken by the Nazi's was due to scientists. While I feel for Viktor and everyone who suffered unbelievable horrors during the Holocaust, I do not believe his arguments are true. For example, he says:

I am absolutely convinced that the gas chambers of Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Maidanek were ultimately prepared not in some Ministry or other in Berlin, but rather at the desks and in the lecture halls of nihilistic scientists and philosophers

This sort of opinion of scientists comes straight out of Ben Stein's recent journey into scientist bashing. Remember this quote from Stein?

the last time any of my relatives saw scientists telling them what to do they were telling them to go to the showers to get gassed

Of course these kind of personal opinions do not really coincide with the evidence. Stein and Weikart both want you to think that believing in evolution and therefore not believing in God allowed the Nazi's to do such horrific things. Richard Darwkins wrote an open letter to a victim of the Holocaust that dispels these falsehoods. For example, Darwin is not even mentioned in Hitler's Mein Kampf. However, Hitler did write:

Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.

The rest of the post is essentially Weikart recanting the history of materialism, including the effect that evolutionary theory had on his perceived destruction of mankind. One interesting thing to point out is that most of these philosophers that he points to were in the late 19th century. What happened during this period of history? The last vestige of the most dehumanizing practice ended. Of course I am talking about slavery, a practice that has been with humans before all of these supposed "dehumanizing" ideas.

I really think that the goal of Weikart in this post and many of the anti-evolutionists is to equate the belief in evolution with amorality. Why else would the Discovery Institute allow a post that equates Nazi's with believing in evolution? But even if believing in evolution meant that you were the most immoral person in the world (it obviously doesn't), it doesn't change that evolution happened. Reality does not care what effect it will have on those that uncover it. It could be true that humanity would be better off not knowing our true origins. However, we don't really know and I don't think that this fear is worth the ignorance. As Jesus once said "you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32

As a lot of my readers will know, there is a definite “internet culture”, with it’

As a lot of my readers will know, there is a definite "internet culture", with it's own slang, it's own etiquette (netiquette), it's own definitions for words, etc... Sometimes something becomes so popular on the 'net that it enters the mainstream world. These things that move through some portions of the 'net like wildfire take a bit more time to filter to everyone in the "real world," and to certain parts of the web. An example of what I'm referring to is a phrase like "Poe's Law." If you are doing Christian Apologetics on message boards, or blogs, or are surfing the net reading different religious discussion boards, Poe's Law is sure to come up at some point.

What is Poe's Law? The law itself was defined by Nathan Poe over on Christian Forums. He was making the point that without some sort of overt sign, like a winking smiley ( ;) ) or something to show irony, that you really can't tell the difference between a parody of fundamentalism and the real thing. Meaning, with Poe's Law, many times you cannot tell if someone is being sarcastic, and attempting humor or are really serious with what they are saying. Take someone, for example, going around the 'net claiming the earth is flat, because they claim that the Bible says it is (of course, it does no such thing, but bear with me). Now, there are two possibilities; either they are jerking everyone's chain to try to prove a point, or they are completely wrong, but completely serious. That's Poe's Law; you can't tell the difference unless the person is 100% honest and tells you their motivation.

Poe's Law is often centered around Christian fundamentalism...however, back when Expelled: The Movie (Expelled is a documentary revealing the prejudice and bias of the academic community centering around evolution vs. Intelligent Design) was being released in theaters a youtube video was released on March 28, 2008 by a user by the name of "randomslice;" Richard Dawkins: Beware the Believers (for my readers who care about such things; there's mild language, wacky hip hop dance moves, and employs language meant to show naturalistic evolutionists' disdain for us religious folk, so if that will bother you, skip watching the vid) :

Now, when this video was released the 'net was buzzing with speculation; who produced it? (The question is hilarious in and of itself; because it was obvious that the video was indeed designed by an intelligent designer, and everyone wanted to know who it was; it could never have happened by chance.) Was it poking fun at those that support Intelligent Design, such as the makers of "Expelled: The Movie," or at those fundamentalist Darwinian evolutionists who cannot stand any other theory being discussed and who try to take a position of intellectual superiority?

Well, the first time my husband and I saw it, we felt it was plainly a mockery of the Darwinian position...and we could not believe that they were blind to this fact...well, on April 20th, randomslice added a new vid; Richard Dawkins: Designed by chance?

Clears it all up, right? It clearly shows that it was the Expelled crew, those in favor of ID being discussed, that was behind the video. And yet...and yet, the fundamentalist Darwinian evolutionists couldn't give it up. The next theory was that Mike, over at Float on Films, (who was in charge of the animation) had to really be on the Darwinists' side even though he was hired by the Expelled crew...because, look at Ben Stein's t-shirt in the second clip...it says "Poe's Law."

Now at this point, I'm laughing, and loving it, because the Expelled crew just gave the world an example of Poe's Law from the other perspective. Their video demonstrates that you can't tell a parody of Fundamentalist Darwinism from a display of the real thing! The Darwinists couldn't even tell, that means they fully expect their really arguments to come off that way. Of course it is indeed a parody, trying to show how the Darwinists, especially Atheistic Darwinists, now have a fundamentalist branch, which falls within Poe's law as well. This set of videos was a kick, everyone following Expelled, on each side, really enjoyed the videos, and it was great fun reading everyone's discussions when they were trying to figure out who designed them.

So, there ya go; two birds, one stone. I've given you a run down of the phrase "Poe's Law" and shown an illustration of the extreme position that fundamentalist evolutionists have taken up. Yes, it was a parody, but a parody so close to the real thing that even adherents to fundamentalist evolutionary theory couldn't tell the difference, and even embraced the videos as representative of their position.

“Should I be worried about the Crips and the Bloods up here?” These were the first words out of

“Should I be worried about the Crips and the Bloods up here?” These were the first words out of the mouth of Ben Stein as he entered my office at Skeptic magazine, located in the racially mixed neighborhood of Altadena, Calif. I cringed and hoped that the two black women in my employ were out of earshot of what was perhaps merely Stein’s hamhanded attempt at humor before he began interviewing me for what I was told was a film on the intersection of science and religion entitled Crossroads.

That is not what the interview was about. And neither is the film, now called Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. The subtitle exposes its motif — intelligent design has been expelled from classrooms and culture, and Ben Stein sees a sinister conspiracy at work. This supercilious financial columnist and ersatz actor and game show host proceeded to grill me on whether or not I think someone should be fired for expressing dissenting views. My answer: it depends. Who is being fired for what, when and where? People are usually fired for reasons having to do with budgetary constraints, incompetence or failure to fulfill the terms of a contract. If you are hired to teach biology according to the curriculum standards of your school district but instead spend the semester telling students that science has no explanation for DNA, wings, eyes, brains and that mystery of mysteries — bacteria flagella — then, yes, you should be fired posthaste. But I know of no instance in which this has happened, and the film’s examples of such alleged abuses have less menacing explanations detailed at ExpelledExposed.com, where Eugenie Scott and her tireless crew at the National Center for Science Education have tracked down the specifics of each case.

After asking the question a dozen different ways, Stein finally changed the subject and queried my opinion on the social impact of Darwinism. Having just finished my book on evolutionary economics (The Mind of the Market), I drew the connection between Adam Smith’s invisible hand and Charles Darwin’s natural selection and noted how capitalists have long used social Darwinism to justify unfettered market competition, from the early 20th-century belief in the survival of the fittest corporations to Enron’s CEO Jeffrey Skilling, who said his favorite book in Harvard Business School was Richard Dawkins’s The Selfish Gene. This was not the answer Stein wanted, and he rejoined with a vehemence I did not understand until I saw his film.

Expelled’s exegesis is this: Darwinism leads to atheism, communism, fascism and a repetition of the Holocaust. We are in an ideological war between a scientific, natural worldview that leads to the Gulag Archipelago and Nazi gas chambers and a religious, supernatural worldview that leads to freedom, justice and the American way. Expelling intelligent design from American classrooms and culture will inexorably take us down a path of doom, and the film’s blunt editing intersperses interview snippets from evolutionary biologists with black-and-white clips of, in ascending scale of ominousness, bullies pounding on a 98-pound weakling; Charlton Heston’s character in Planet of the Apes being blasted by a water hose by a gorilla thug; Nikita Khrushchev pounding his fist on a United Nations desk; East Germans captured trying to scale the Berlin Wall; and Nazi crematoria remains and Holocaust victims being bulldozed into mass graves. The formula is unmistakable: Darwinism = death.

Expelled is pure propaganda that would make even Leni Riefenstahl blush. The film deserves the Michael Moore Palme d’Or Award for Objective Journalism. Tellingly, it is being marketed to church groups, religious organizations and conservative Christians. I saw it at the National Religious Broadcasters convention, where Stein and the producers received a standing ovation and we were all given an Expelled “Event & Resource Kit,” which includes movie posters, bumper stickers, teaching outlines, literature from the pro–intelligent design Discovery Institute and even a whistle for “Blowing the whistle on suppression.” A DVD includes interviews with intelligent design proponents and suggestions on how to “host a ‘Dinner with Darwin’ … using the Discussion Guide, DVD and the film as an opportunity to educate yourselves about the ‘good science’ in support of our faith.”

When will Americans learn that evolutionary theory has nothing whatsoever to do with religious faith and that “good science” is the product of good data and theory, not good fit to scripture? After Expelled, will anyone take Ben Stein seriously again? Anyone? Anyone?

Looks like those vague hints and rumors were indeed authentic: Ben Stein’s anti-science opus E

Looks like those vague hints and rumors were indeed authentic: Ben Stein's anti-science opus Expelled is going to be re-released later this summer.

The rationale, however, strikes be as pure hype:

"We had many individuals and groups who had planned to see the film, but decided not to because the cloud of doubt this lawsuit brought to the film," noted one of the film's producers, John Sullivan.

Riiiiight. Because an obscure lawsuit based on copyright claims that few people outside of nuts like myself that follow these things ever heard about had a chilling effect on ordinary moviegoers.

Now, it might have been reasonable for Sullivan to note that the Ono lawsuit hurt the distribution efforts of the film, which it almost certainly did, and that this hurt their momentum.

But this production has always favored incoherently overwrought rhetoric over honest appraisal. Does Sullivan really expect anyone to seriously believe that any moviegoers at all avoided the film because of the lawsuit? Were they afraid that Ono would have thugs stationed outside the theaters threatening anyone who dared to watch it? Conflicted fans of both the Beatles and Ben Stein that held off declaring their allegiances until the legal issues were resolved?

"We came out of the gate with strong momentum only to have our integrity questioned by this frivolous lawsuit. While we're thrilled with the film's having earned nearly $8 million during its first run; we've heard from enough people and groups who want to see it in their theaters that we've agreed to re-release it this time without an undeserved cloud over its head."

Because, of course, the only "cloud" over the film's head was an obscure copyright lawsuit and not, well, you know, most critics panning it, sciencebloggers raking it over the coals for its distortions and slander, the ADL condemning it, and so on.

And this paragraph makes the "cloud" reasoning even more ridiculous. People obsessive enough to demand the immediate re-screening of a film which will likely be out on DVD in a few months are not the sort of people who would have stayed away the first time... based on the mere existence of a copyright lawsuit against the film.

"We will not be silenced. In fact it will have the opposite effect: we will re-release it and allow millions of Americans to go to the box office and register their vote against Ms. Ono and her attempt to keep them from watching our film."

As John Pieret has pointed out, something is funky with the math here. Given that Expelled made about 7.5 million during its run, and ticket prices were generally in the range of 8 dollars and up, then at best the film got about a million viewers (not counting the fact that some percentage of people would have been repeats). The odds are astronomically low that any hypothetical second run would match that, let alone exceed it.

And indeed, despite all the hype, it looks like the producers know that, and that the "re-release" is not quite akin to a remastered Star Wars. At the end of the article, they note that they have 1000 prints of the film ready to go. Which is a rather far cry from "1000 different theaters already booked to show the film": the sort of thing you might expect from an announcement about an impending re-release. As far as I can tell, this is all just hyperbolic way of announcing that the producers, free from the injunction, are now willing to lease out old prints to anyone who wants them.

Which all strikes me as sort of pathetic coming from an outfit that once seemed to sincerely believe that they would be sparking off a vast nationwide movement. We still don't know whether the filmmakers actually broke even after their production and marketing costs.

As a follow-up to Expelled's flop after its premiere in Canada last week, I tried to pull together the numbers for this weekend's performance. Unfortunately, finding Canadian box office results separate from US results is hard: the only source I have is Tribute (one of the Canadian movie magazines), which publishes the top 20 Canadian movies each week. Last week, Expelled ranked 20th on the list.

This week, it's not even on the list.

So I can't tell you how much it made. What I can tell you is how much it didn't make: the 20th ranked film on the list was Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, which pulled in a total of $15,226 this weekend. So Expelled made no more than $15,000 dollars, and chances are that it made a damn sight less. See the bottom of this post for screencaps of the Tribute website, showing both this weekend and last weekend's results.

In other news, the Expelled website is now reporting a total of 23 theatres playing the movie (I should have taken screenshots of this too! Oh well, too late now). It seems that theatres are abandoning this turkey in droves, since across the nation 36% of the theatres that had been showing Expelled - according to their numbers, at least - have dropped it.

Ah, the sweet smell of failure...

Visual records of the fail follow (from Tribute.ca):

Twice, Obama voted against bills prohibiting tax funding of abortions.

Obama: I absolutely can, so please don’t believe the emails. I have repeatedly said that I think it’s entirely appropriate for states to restrict or even prohibit late-term abortions as long as there is a strict, well-defined exception for the health of the mother. Now, I don’t think that “mental distress” qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term. Otherwise, as long as there is such a medical exception in place, I think we can prohibit late-term abortions.

Barack Obama has reversed himself yet again, but this time he has done a double backflip with a half-twist to the Left. After previously saying he opposed gay marriage and that he respected the rights of states to set conditions for marriage, Obama has now said that he opposes California’s initiative to ban gay marriage — and that he would use federal law to end such efforts: (more)

ABC: Obama flip-flopped on welfare reform

ABC News takes a critical look at Obama’s new ad, “Dignity”, and sees a reversal on Bill Clinton’s welfare reform program. While Obama takes credit for moving people off of the welfare rolls and into jobs, he sang a different tune in 1997 while in the Illinois state legislature. Rather than support Clinton, he called the president “disturbing” and opposed the initiative: (more)

WE CAN'T KEEP DRIVING OUR SUVs AND EATN’ OUT AND SHOOTING OFF FIREWORKS:

We can't keep using up 99% of the worlds fireworks with only 5% of the world’s crackers in our country. We must be cognizant of the fact that the rest of the world does not have access to these fireworks because of Americans' greed. We must step into the twenty-first century and come along side our less fortunate societies that don't have a 4th of July on their calendar.

THIS TRADITION FORCED ON US BY WHITE EUROPEAN SUPREMACISTS HAS TO GO!

We cannot continue a tradition that is not shared by the rest of our world wide brothers. We cannot continue a celebration that encourages increasing our carbon footprint! We cannot carry on a tradition that is based on the maiming and killing just to start a new country. We cannot support a tradition that included torturing our worthy opponents. We cannot continue to support a tradition that is not celebrated by 95% of the world's population. We cannot support a tradition that was the beginning of the end for our polar bears in Alaska.

THAT IS WHY I AM PROPOSING A NEW CELEBRATION FOR THE LOSERS OF THE WORLD:

This new holiday will not be held on the 4th of July but on the 13th of July. The day that represents bad luck! The day that will go down in history as a day of rejoicing for losing a war, a country, a nation. A day for all of the losers to come out and shout, "Good Ridens, We didn't want you in our lives any way!" Yes losers everywhere, in every nation, of every race will be able to jump for joy and shout, "We don't care about you , we lost and you didn't!"

AND NO MORE SPARKERLERS, FIRECRACKERS, OR FIREWORKS:

Did you see Bush yesterday lighting those sparkerlers with those kids at the White House; we'll talk about that supremacist name later. He was all smiling and giddy like. He doesn't care that that sparkerler puts out carbon dioxide emissions. He doesn't care that that sparkerler may injure the child's retina. Those guys just don't care just like the men who started this whole waste of time phenomenon that is the blight of the world. We will never us fire to represent our country again; it is suppressive and sends the wrong message to our friends and our enemies. Well just last week I was talking with Osama, Ahmadinejad and Hugo, and they all said that "That firecracker thing has to go". They said that our celebration only leads to infuriating their anti-American sentiment and makes them angry enough to show us their fire.

WE WILL CELEBRATE BY WAVE WHITE FLAGS:

Yes waving white flags in the middle of the day will save energy, think of the polar bears; appease our enemies, no more fires or explosions; help us see our friendly neighbors face to face, instead of hiding in the night; and give the world a symbol for losers everywhere to unite and come together.

MICHELLE SAYS THAT SHE HAS NEVER BEEN PROUD OF THE 4TH OF JULY:

Yes folks if we can just move away from are addiction to carbon fueled celebrations then we can bring that sense of pride back to Michelle and the millions of disenfranchised losers out there who stay home and hunker down in the corner of their rooms during all of that god awful noise and fire. The losers will come out of their embarrassed shells and share their lives and stories with us as we wave our flags of white.

Let July 13th go down in history as

the day that American got her grove back!

The day that we quit acting like winners and embraced the loser within.

A Lethbridge man was psychologically scarred for life last night after watching the pro-intelligent

A Lethbridge man was psychologically scarred for life last night after watching the pro-intelligent design documentary "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" at a local cinema. Jebus B. Gobley, 49, suffered a "catastrophic shattering of the nerves", about half way through the film showing at the Movie Mill, according to a friend who would only identify himself as "Dr. Jim".

The website banner for the controversial film.

Mr. Gobley attended the film with a number of friends, two of whom left when they felt the onset of what they now say was likely the same condition that cost Mr. Gobley his last remaining brain cells. "We don't hold the Movie Mill in any way responsible. It is a great venue and really inexpensive." said Natasha, "I just wish they would have put health warnings on the tickets for this film." Also leaving early was Annabree, who said,"Good thing I forgot my chainsaw, because they sure weren't checking them at the door. No telling what I would have done. I don't know how Mary sat through the whole thing. Maybe she hid behind the popcorn bag and went 'la la la la la'".

According to witnesses, Mr. Gobley began showing signs of extreme stress within minutes of the movie beginning. An usher was called on a few occasions to order Gobley to stop blowing steam out of his ears as it was blocking the view for other patrons. Gobley reportedly accused the film's star, Ben Stein, of blowing "much worse out his ass", but the usher attempted to reassure Gobley that this was just part of the film's special effects, "like in Star Wars".

Just after his companions left, Mr. Gobley was heard to say "but but, (#$^#(^~!&%*$% teh stupid; IT BURNS!!!!". Dr. Jim, who performed an emergency reality check on Gobley after the film said, "basically, the stupidity quotient coupled with the massive deceit-factor overwhelmed his anti-lying-idiot-bastard shields. His bullshit detector went into the red and stayed there. He blew out a flux capacitor in his neural net and the matter/anti-matter separator thingee got infected by the anti-reality waves emanating from the warped-core of the film itself. Medically speaking, he was totally gibbled by time we dragged him out of there. We got him home and put him on a strict regimen of Strongbow Cider, and he will likely be on this course of medication for the rest of his life. He is semi-conscious now, and so its nice to see he is getting back to something like normal, at least for him. The trauma of this event, however, will be with him forever."

An artist's impression of what likely occurred.

The film itself, while modeled on the documentary/investigative journalist genre, is actually closer to the fantasy / conspiracy theory films like "The Da Vinci Code" or "National Treasure"; films that are obviously fiction spun around legends of hidden treasures, secret knowledge and even more secret societies.

Like the block-buster trend-setting film, The Da Vinci Code, Expelled imagines a fictive world run by a secret cabal, but in the place of the Knights Templar or Free Masons, Stein creates an insidious—but outwardly charming—evil force: orthodox science, comprised of powerful, privileged atheistic "Darwinists". These conspirators jealously guard their power and prestige at the expense of true scientific research by making any kind of academic position dependent upon agreeing to uphold the creed that is the theory of evolution. The film is also a martyrology; recounting the tragic fates of those who would dare challenge the conspiracy, likening the victims to those trapped by the Berlin Wall. "Darwinism" is also to blame for eugenics, Nazism, communism, family planning and people not being nice to each other in a myriad of other ways. For reasons that are still unclear to researchers, some people take this crap seriously. "They are all fucking stupid" said a famous scientist. "Wankers, the lot of them".

Relaxing on the floor at his home, surrounded by rapidly emptying Strongbow cans, Mr. Gobley looks back at the harrowing ordeal somewhat philosophically. "Fuck, that was bullshit", he says.

"They threw P.Z. Meyers out before it even began" reported Natasha. "I wish they would have done that to us and none of this would have happened to poor Jebus" (referring to the famous incident when the arch-representative of Big Biology, Prof. P. Z. Meyers, was expelled from the lineup at a premier of the Stein movie even though he is interviewed in the film itself).

When asked what this incident would mean to the Society for the Happily Unchurched and Freethinking Folk of Lethbridge, in which he is a leading figure and his companions all high ranking members, Mr. Gobley denied that his experiences should be taken as a sign of weakness. "I didn't give in, even when the rest of the audience applauded" he said. "Sure, my brains were splattering all over the place, but I held my ground. I didn't give in. They wanted me to agree with them just to make the movie end quicker, but I didn't back down!" When asked if he would buy the DVD when it came out, Gobley hit this reporter with a half-frozen chicken and told him to fuck off.

The controversial documentary has inspired other film-makers to challenge "Big Science", and at least three feature length projects are underway. This raises questions of audience safety, and some are calling for censorship of blatant lying pseudoscientific bullshit. Not all would take this step, however. "Oh, I don't agree with censorship", said Annabree. "I just need my chainsaw". The three projects currently underway are:

FSM Expelled

A production being made in Alberta, this film tries to undermine the darwinistical bias and bigotry against belief in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Sexspelled: No Intercourse Allowed

This film challenges the widely held and scientifically "acceptable" view, that children are the result of sex, claiming that there is a conspiracy to silence the rival theory, that children are brought by storks.

Suspended: No Astrology Allowed

Taking "Big Astronomy" to task, the true scientific methodology of astrology is defended.

Undaunted, Mr. Gobley says his movie-going days are not over. "I want to see Horton Hears a Who", he said.

CHICAGO - The squat brick buildings of Grove Parc Plaza, in a dense neighborhood that Barack Obama represented for eight years as a state senator, hold 504 apartments subsidized by the federal government for people who can't afford to live anywhere else.

But it's not safe to live here.

About 99 of the units are vacant, many rendered uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage. Mice scamper through the halls. Battered mailboxes hang open. Sewage backs up into kitchen sinks. In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale - a score so bad the buildings now face demolition.

Among those tied to Obama politically, personally, or professionally are:

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Obama's presidential campaign and a member of his finance committee. Jarrett is the chief executive of Habitat Co., which managed Grove Parc Plaza from 2001 until this winter and co-managed an even larger subsidized complex in Chicago that was seized by the federal government in 2006, after city inspectors found widespread problems.

Allison Davis, a major fund-raiser for Obama's US Senate campaign and a former lead partner at Obama's former law firm. Davis, a developer, was involved in the creation of Grove Parc and has used government subsidies to rehabilitate more than 1,500 units in Chicago, including a North Side building cited by city inspectors last year after chronic plumbing failures resulted in raw sewage spilling into several apartments.

Antoin "Tony" Rezko, perhaps the most important fund-raiser for Obama's early political campaigns and a friend who helped the Obamas buy a home in 2005. Rezko's company used subsidies to rehabilitate more than 1,000 apartments, mostly in and around Obama's district, then refused to manage the units, leaving the buildings to decay to the point where many no longer were habitable.

Campaign finance records show that six prominent developers - including Jarrett, Davis, and Rezko - collectively contributed more than $175,000 to Obama's campaigns over the last decade and raised hundreds of thousands more from other donors. Rezko alone raised at least $200,000, by Obama's own accounting.

One of those contributors, Cecil Butler, controlled Lawndale Restoration, the largest subsidized complex in Chicago, which was seized by the government in 2006 after city inspectors found more than 1,800 code violations. (Chicago Globe)

But these reports about the pay in Mr. "Equal Pay" Obama's offices seem interesting, especially as compared to McCain -- although as with most such studies I do not presume a causal relationship to evidence of discrimination.
Federal officials announced on Monday that they will do all they can to make up for a shortfall in money previously pledged for the city's light rail starter line that is now under construction.

Federal Transit Administrator James S. Simpson awarded the city $18.9 million toward the $128 million the government promised for the project.

The FTA had budgeted a $57 million contribution to the project for fiscal year 2008, but Congress appropriated only $23 million. With Monday's announcement, this year's federal share is about $15 million less than anticipated.

Information on Eastside Link extension

This is Seattle's light rail system running from downtown to the airport. This line was originally designed to serve riders from the University District through to the airport, but the line was shortened after costs increased. Soon after voters approved Sound Transit, discussions began on extending the line to Northgate, which has a large regional bus transit center. Even future extensions to the Eastside or to Tacoma were proposed.

Then the problems began. Due to the unique topography of the Seattle area, as well as its urbanization, a significant portion of the line needed to be in a tunnel under Capitol Hill and the University District.. It turned out the tunneling would cost more than predicted due to difficult soils. Then, another large portion of the line was designed to run at street level through South Seattle. The community was upset by this, and demanded concessions. These issues led to years of delays...at a time when property values were just about doubling every year. Note that Sound Transit didn't own any of the right of way for the project.

OLYMPIA-- With or without Seattle's approval, the state will tear down the earthquake-damaged Alaskan Way Viaduct in 2012, Gov. Chris Gregoire said Thursday.

"It's coming down in 2012. I'm taking it down -- the middle," she said, referring to the elevated portion of the span that runs roughly from Battery Street Tunnel to Pioneer Square, which has been the most vexing and controversial piece of the transportation puzzle.

"That's the timeline. I'm not going to fudge on it. And if we don't have some alternative by then, boy are we going to have a mess on our hands because it's coming down."

Asked if she, as governor, could trump the state's largest city and county and unilaterally tear down a highway that carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day through the heart of Seattle, Gregoire said:

"Yeah, watch me."

The Disproportionate Bumper Stickers are representative of the two opposite candidates.

McCain Supporters are not as boisterous:

I don’t see many McCain Stickers, but I don’t believe that it is because we are afraid of having them taken off by Obama supporters. I think it is more of a statement of how Right of Center people view politics.

We see politics, politicians, and government as a necessary evil that we tolerate in order to defend the peace, pave roads, and keep the loonies from destroying the country. We see our government as the original founders saw it. We see our government as something that we have to keep a lease on to keep it from getting out of control with power. That is why we love the constitution so much. In part it was designed to keep our power hungry politicians from intruding on our freedom and making this country into what we left behing in England and Europe.

Obama represents the old European:

And New for that matter, style controlling government. Obama is the tpe of leader who made the first settlers leave England and come to America for freedom, we need to stop him now in order to keep our country free; there is no place for us to go to and form a new 'Land of the Free".

WE know that our leaders are human and full of human flaws. We know that we must keep them under check and balance their power with our power.

Lefties see government as the answer to all human ills, happiness, and human evolution. They see politicians as Messiahs, Kings/Queens, Healers, All-knowing, Omnipotent, god like beings that know more than the average person. That is why the left is always eagerly willing to give up our freedoms and prosperity to Obama types and swoon to their knees in obedience.

Hence the difference in the number of Bumper Stickers.

Any One Who Visited Eugene Oregon For the Olympic Trials This Week Was Treated to a Horde of Obama Bumper Stickers:

Yes one of America's most liberal leftist towns supports Obama wholeheartedly. You couldn't drive a block with out an Obama Sticker staring you in the face. Yes, America's Olympic Trials took place in Obama Land. In fact you can see Obama Stickers on every freeway in America. I've even seen Obama Stickers on SUVs and in fast food restaurant parking lots....are we in trouble?

Now she's filing a lawsuit against TEA. According to the Dallas Morning News:

Maybe this is one of those cases such a neutral film like Crossroads Expelled should have included. It's all about fairness, and teaching both sides, after all.

It should be interesting to see what happens.

The "Millennials" are leaning towards Obama by a large margin, and in some states, that could make the difference in the fall.

Thus my latest --a relatively short, 10,000 word pamphlet in soft-cover written for the 18 to 25 year old voter. If you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, older sibling or just a friend who would like to open the conversation with an Obama enthusiast, I think it will help. (Hugh Hewitt)

We need to educate our younger friends and family members,

It is our responsibility to share our wisdom with the young voter.

This is the most important election of our lifetime. We must be strategic in our actions and endeavors. It is not enough sit and complain about an Obama presidency. We must be diligent, forthright and purposeful in keeping this man out of the most powerful position in the World.

The Carter Years

For those of us who lived through the Jimmy Carter years we know what is in store for us. Gas rationing, Iran hostages, inflation, stagflation, misery index, high interest rates, high unemployment, weakened military.... The newby voters have no clue how far down a radical liberal president can take this country in a few short years. Carter was just your average bumbling liberal. Obama is the real deal radical liberal. His mistakes will be detrimental enough, his intended actions will destroy our economic health and our social structure. Young people will identify with the thought that they will not be allowed to prosper financial in their lifetime, they will understand that freedom of choice of career decisions and financial success will be hampered if Obama takes over. They need to know that Obama will weaken our military. Hugh Hewitt's pamphlet lays out this information in a precise and concise way, in a style that plays to the younger voter.

Strategic planing is called for in this election.

Get up, Get out, Get going.

Let's put our effort into saving the American Dream

for our younger friends, children, grandchildren and co-workers.

Obama will not be willing or know how to protect

our country from our enemies!

Let us not, on this Independence Day weekend, dwell on the political pretenders to patriotism rushing to out-proclaim their love of country. Nor let us pay heed to the sneering movie directors and journalism pooh-bahs allergic to red, white, and blue.

Instead, I’d like to share a bit of a special interview with a true Hollywood freedom-lover. Last week, my friend Melanie Morgan of Move America Forward and I co-hosted a special Internet telethon on Ustream.tv to raise money for care packages to send to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The effort yielded more than $1.1 million thanks to thousands of generous donors across the country. Among the special guests who contributed time and resources was musician John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting.

Recently, I posted my review of “Flock of Dodos: the intelligent design - evolution circus

Recently, I posted my review of "Flock of Dodos: the intelligent design - evolution circus" by Randy Olsen. It appears that the Discovery Institute took exception to the theme of the movie. Several posts were written, and even a website was created to discredit the movie. A quote taken from the this post summarizes their feelings:

Randy Olson presented fiction as fact in his anti-ID documentary Flock of Dodos. But rather than apologize for his film's repeated bloopers and misrepresentations ...

Repeated bloopers and misrepresentations? I have been scouring the Discovery Institute's blogs to find all their criticisms of "Flock of Dodos." I have only been able to find two realcriticisms: the Haekel drawings in textbooks and the Discovery Institute's budget. You would have thought that in a movie that runs nearly an hour and a half, they could have found more "repeated bloopers and misrepresentations." The film has quite a few tidbits of information that support evolution and/or discredit intelligent design. I don't see any complaints about the poorly designed digestive system of herbivores or weak heart architecture. There is no talk of the vestigial pelvises of whales that was shown in the film. I guess the Discovery Institute is too busy focusing on segments of the show that totaled all of maybe 5 mins. Since the criticisms largely focus on Haekel drawings and the budget issues, I will focus on them.

First, let me say this, I don't think it matters too much to the modern theory of evolution that Haekel faked his drawings. If you look at real micrographs of developing embryos, you see a surprising amount of similarity. Look here and here. The idea is that there is a conserved genetic blueprint that is followed to varying extent in animals, not evolution recurring during embryogenesis as Haekel believed. Not the strongest support for evolution, but it is line with the existing theory. If animals were designed, wouldn't it make sense that they would look as different during development as they do when they are fully grown?

Second, Olson did not say that you would not ever find any references to Haeckel's drawings. He said that they have been largely removed and when they are present is in the context of history. From this post by John West:

But it turns out that Olson is the one who is promoting a fraud. The diagrams in question were unquestionably used in modern textbooks, and Olson himself knows that fact.

Here is the what Olsen said during the movie:

No, you don't find it, there's no trace other than a mention that once upon a time Haeckel came up with this idea of ontogeny recapitulating phylogeny

So in fact, Olsen did not say that you will never find them. An IDer taking an evolutionist's words out of context, what a huge surprise! I looked at my own biology textbooks and I did find the drawings in one of the four that I own. So the textbooks are not perfect, but I don't think this is the first time t have provided inaccurate information.

Did Olsen exaggerate the budget of the Discovery Institute? Yes, but not by much. Certainly not as big of a deal as the Discovery Institute believes. Olsen said "around 5 million" and the Discovery Institute says $4.2 million. I personally believe that 4.2 is around 5 million. If someone asked you about how much something that costs $4.20, would you feel that you were lying if you said 5 bucks? The Discovery Institute goes on to say that they really only spend one million on intelligent design activities, but Olsen only referred to their total budget. They even produced a nice little graph, which I have altered below to be more accurate to the movie. For my own peace of mind, I looked up what the Discovery Institute's reported income for 2006 and it was 4,165,847, or about 5 million.

Other criticisms from the Discovery Institute are that Olsen misrepresented the "Wedge document", he exaggerated the Discovery Institute's involvement in the Dover trial, and why he was not ever granted an interview with a Discovery Institute fellow. My personal opinion is that if they had such a problem with the content of the movie, they would have done something like the Expelled Exposed website.

Something in the way she moves.....:

And talks and acts and rants, makes me think of the Beatles song "I Me Mine"

Michelle Obama Is Back in All Her splendor and Glory:

She had been laying low for a few weeks. But I guess she wants more than her 15 minutes of fame. So on June 26th she made a speech to the Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council for the Democrat National Convention. In her speech she contradics many of Barack's previous "moving to the center" statements.

You see it is not only what she says but how she says it. Because when you grow up in America with privilege and opportunity to attend prestigious colleges and then your husband is the presumptive Democrat Nominee for President of the most debased country in the world and you give yourself over to lies and deceit and you expect the world to bow down to your rhetoric and that when all of your followers give you the thumbs up sign you get such a swollen head that you can't remember or you just don't care if what your saying is the truth or just a line to keep the crowd riled up. Because when you are born in the only country in the world that suppresses minorities and you believe that America is the problem of the world then you have the right to say anything you want to in order to make your point, because your point is more important, whether it be true, a lie, or a version of a lie that perpetuates your cause. Because your cause, you see, is more important than the truth, and like we all know those Republicans can't handle the truth and when you have been discriminated against in this election then you have the right to fight the fight and not necessarily the "good fight". So that is why it is ok for you to say it the way that you mean it regardless of the facts! Because after all it is all about I me mine and mine and mine and mine....oh yea and Obama.

From the Associated Press:

Obama’s wife says he’ll fight for gay equality

from The Associated Press

Michelle Obama also drew a connection between the struggles for gay rights and civil rights.

"We are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall, in the pursuit of a more perfect union," she said at the event, held days before the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots between gays and New York police, and the city's annual gay pride parade.

AND NOW SHE COMPARES GAY MARAIGE TO

THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

"We are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall, in the pursuit of a more perfect union," she said at the event, held days before the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots between gays and New York police, and the city's annual gay pride parade"

HMM? So the civil rights movement and the discrace of those events are equal to a gay pride parade scuffle?

Don't tell me she is off limits in this election. She is speaking for Barack. She is speaking about the future of America.

During her speech she insinuates that Texans are Red Neck Bigots:

From Hugh Hewitt,

Michelle Obama - 7 (Audio)

"It's not just about positions that you take. It's also about the leadership that you provide on these issues. Barack has the courage to talk to skeptical audiences, not just friendly ones. That's why he told a crowd at a rally in Texas that gays and lesbians deserve equality. And you can imagine in Texas that that crowd got a little quiet. But Barack said, and I quote now, he said, "I'm A Christian, and I praise Jesus every Sunday." And then the crowd starting cheering. And then he said, "I hear people saying things that I don't think are very Christian with respect to people who are gay and lesbian." And you know what? When he said that, the crowd kept cheering. That's why he told Evangelicals at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church that we need a renewed call to action on HIV and AIDS. That's why he went to Ebeneezer Baptist Church, and he said that we need to get over homophobia in the African-American community, that if we're honest with ourselves, we'll embrace our gay brothers and sisters instead of scorning them. And that's why he stood up in 2004 at the Democratic National Convention, and he told all of America that we refuse to be divided anymore. That's the choice in this election." (Hugh Hewitt)

So she just keeps saying things and making points because only in American can a presidential candidates wife make up stuff and not be called out by the press, because you know that if they did they would be going against their hope the hope that is Obama and Michelle the hope that will reverse two hundred years of the most magnificent progress humans have ever made! (riggword)

From Hugh Hewitt,

"From the fact-checking department, here is the video of Barack Obama in Beaumont, Texas, in March of this year, speaking to supporters at a rally, as cited by Michelle Obama." (Hugh Hewitt)

HMM, I don't hear silence in the crowd...do you? Somehow Michelle Obama thinks that we should assume that a crowd in "Texas" would get a little quit, "And you can imagine in Texas that that crowd got a little quiet." What we know is that she imagines that the crowd in Texas is bigoted because they are in "Texas" of course. (riggword)

Eugenie Scott, the Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education, was interviewed

Eugenie Scott, the Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education, was interviewed in Episode 21 of Books and Ideas. The focus of our conversation was the importance of teaching evolution in the public schools. Dr. Scott and the NCSE have worked for over 20 years to promote the teaching of evolution because it is an essential component of a modern education in the life sciences. Unfortunately, nearly 150 years after Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859) many Americans still reject this fundamental idea and much of Scott's work is focused on trying to keep creationism and so-called Intelligent Design out of school curriculum.

Recently the NCSE launched a very valuable site called Expelled Exposed, which focuses on exposing the many inaccuracies presented in Ben Stein's recent pro-intelligent design "documentary" Expelled. One of the things that has come out in numerous interviews is that the producers of the film mislead all the pro-evolution guests that appear in the film. We discuss this briefly near the end of the interview, but it was not the focus of our discussion. (see below for more links regarding Expelled)

Since Dr. Scott has been interviewed about Expelled and Expelled Exposed on several other podcasts, I wanted to focus our interview more on the importance of accurate science education. Also, we discussed the fact that despite the claims of right-wing fundamentalists there are many Christians and people of other faiths who accept the theory of evolution as scientifically valid. Accepting evolution does not mean one is choosing atheism. I think this is a very important distinction because while atheists are outspoken in their support of evolution they represent a small minority. I was encouraged to learn from Dr. Scott that the NCSE is working closely with religious leaders and scientists of faith to try to educate their members.

Since Books and Ideas reaches an international audience I thought that it was important that we discuss the origins of the evolution versus creationism controversy, which is unique to the United States. Scott does an excellent job of explaining how our unique religious heritage along with our locally controlled school systems combine to create a situation that most of the world find's rather mystifying. Her book Evolution vs. Creationism: An Introduction also provides an excellent overview of the subject from both an historical and scientific prospective.

Finally, we talk about the importance of evolution as a basic idea in modern biology. While we didn't dwell on this, I think we are both concerned about the implications for the future if a majority of young Americans are reaching college without a solid foundation in the principles of evolution. We also talked about why intelligent design fails to meet the basic definition of a scientific theory since it provides no testable hypotheses. Dr. Scott also provides a excellent review of the basic writings for those who want to learn more.

First there are the Hyphenated-American's Bumper Stickers:

Ok, most of these -Americans I can understand but Oceanographer-Americans? I always thought that Oceanographers were intelligent reasonable people. And couldn't we just combine Bowler-Americans with Teamster-Americans? Aren't they the same people? And Women-Americans, I thought they were in mourning for Hillary.

And what every Happened to American-Americans?

Then you see all of the Flag Waving Patriotic Obama Bumper Stickers:

Now these are the ones that make me go Huh? I thought American was the problem in the world. I thought that America was D----- by God. I thought that there was no Hope in American without Obama. Hmm I wouldn't think that Obamaites would want an American flag anywhere near their candidate.

Other Obama Stickers that are kinda....well?

Zen? Peace? Never go back? Obama of the World? What do these have to do with being qualified to be the Commander in Chief of the United States of America?

Of course you always know that you will find and Obama Bumper Sticker on a car full of liberal cause Stickers:

Here are some Obama stickers we all like to see:

So, the big question is does the number of a candidates Bumper Stickers equal a win? Judging from the number of Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers I still see out there the answer is NO!

ARE WE IN TROUBLE?
What do you think?
