Initially, I thought I only used my Nikon D200 for like 20,000 shots. I found that I did almost 30,000! I forgot a complete cycle of 4 digits (9,999!). Well, then I don't know if I should tell this. New buyer may think my camera body is relatively old comparing to other selling 2nd items, they only have the counter like 1,000 - 5,000 shots (OMG! bought a > HK$10k camera for only took few thousands shots!) Anyway, I think this figure is good enough to tell me that this body is worth so much for me. It costs me less than HK$0.50 per shot. :)

Nikon D200's shutter frame was tested reliable for 100k cycles at least.

Since then, I've tried it out some to see how it worked, and even used the geotagged photos on Flickr and Zooomr while testing the photo hosting sites.

It's not a revelation, but it seems to do what was advertised.

The image above shows what you get when you first start it up and drag and drop several photos into the tool. It has several categories to add/delete/modify location information, date time stamping (even correcting for incorrectly dated images by adjusting the dates by days/hours/minutes/seconds), copyright info, etc. These are the basic stuff you'd expect from a metadata tool. Unfortuntately, you can only modify what the tool allows you to do, unlike ExifTool.

As for geotagging images, it's quite easy actually, once you get past the initial curve of learning the program. The Help didn't help. It has a "Tagging Images with Location Data" topic that just showed

Sorry, the geotagging advisor is not available.

Maybe Microsoft needs to test the software a little more before releasing.

In the end, I found that after navigating the MSN Virtual Earth map to where the photo was taken, you just need to right click on the photo and "Set GPS Location for this image". With that, the GPS is data is written directly to the metadata of the photo itself, and not just a sidecar XML file.

In the end, it works, but I fail to see the big deal about it since other better software, such as Picasa and ExifTool, already exists to cover these two areas. (see update below)

I understand that Microsoft is trying to make inroads into digital photography, but it needs to do more and more convincingly at that.

May 8 Update:

There are a few other features I failed to mention yesterday that I just thought of. One is that if you already have GPS data captured from a standalone GPS, you can use that to geotag your photos. It's able to read NMEA, GPX, KML and log files. Another addition is that you can enter an address for a photo, and it'll tag the photo based on the GPS coordinates of the address. Both of these are nice features.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work on RAW files, which is a shame since it makes this tool rather useless for me as I mainly shoot RAW and would rather geotag the original RAW files. Also given that a large number of "Pro Photo"-graphers who shoot RAW, this seems like one feature that Microsoft should have enabled. Nevertheless, for those who mainly shoot JPEGs, this tool could be a useful part of your arsenal.

Likely seeing "thar's gold in them thar hills", Microsoft recently released a geotagging tool, called Pro Photo Tools, based on MSN Virtual Earth. While I haven't tried it, the description seems similar to what is provided through Google's Picasa, which uses Google Earth. The nice thing is that it has support for some RAW formats right off the bat. What I'm wondering is if it modifies the metadata directly so can be used by Lightroom, or if it writes out to its own side file, like Picasa does, which doesn't help my usage of Lightroom.

I'll give it a run, but I'm not certain this is what I'm looking for the GPS aspects. Still, for those that do not have a GPS already, want to easily geotag your photos, and is using Windows, this might be a viable solution.

Beyond just handling the GPS aspect of it, it also provides capabilities to edit metadata, ala ExifTool + ExifTool GUI.

To augment its usability, Bogdan Hrastnik wrote up a GUI for this great little software. It's called ExifTool GUI and, like ExifTool, it's free.

ExifTool GUI

I was hoping to replace the Windows Command interface when you right-click and choose to show a photos metadata with the GUI, but all the GUI program does is open up to the directory, and you still need to click on the photo to get the metadata. So for now, the Command interface stays.

What you need to do to use this utility is to download it from here and install it into the same directory as where you installed ExifTool.

The GUI isn't totally compatible with the instructions to view EXIF information though. To use the GUI, you need to rename ExifTool from "exiftool(-k).exe" to "exiftool.exe".

The "(-k)" in the name tells ExifTool to not close the command window immediately after execution. So without it, if you use the right-click method, the metadata will print, and the window disappears before you can read anything. Not the best for usability. What you'll need to do is to pass the "-k" as an argument to ExifTool instead. This requires a change to the registry. It's quite simple and here are the steps:

1. Open to Start->Run and run "regedit"
2. On the left-hand hierarchy viewer, navigate to:

   My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\ExifTool\command

3. On the right-hand window, you should see:
   "(Default)", "REG_SZ", and the path to ExifTool
4. Right-click on "(Default)" and select "Modify"
5. Rename:

   <path>\exiftool(-k).exe %1

   to:

   <path>\exiftool.exe -k %1

6. Close the Registry Editor

Now your right-click will maintain it's original functionality.

So why go through all this trouble since you can already view and remove EXIF data?

Apart from the nice interface, my best use for it so far is for adjusting the time photos are taken. When I went for that photo shoot at the Hoyt Arboretum last weekend, I didn't realize my camera time was off by several hours. With ExifTool GUI, I corrected the time for all the photos I took during that outing in a snap.

This utility has earned its place on my hard drive.

Now, why would you want to remove anything from the EXIF?

I normally shoot with a Nikon D200 in raw capture mode, and import all my photos into Adobe Lightroom. Most times I would at least make adjustments to my photos, such as white balance, highlight recovery, fill light, clarify, vibrance, etc. Other times, when needed, I'll modify saturation, desaturate them to make them into B&W images, add vignetting for effect, etc. As it turns out, when I export my photos from Lightroom, it also exports all of my settings into the EXIF of the photos.

For example, in the photo below, after exporting from Lightroom, the following EXIF data is written to the image:

That's just a small sample of what is exported. Sometimes this is fine -- I may want whoever is looking at them to know how I got to the end result, sometimes I'd rather not share the info, and that's where ExifTool comes into the picture (no pun intended).

If you know what fields in the EXIF you wish to remove, you can simply execute ExifTool at the command prompt with the following command:

<path to>\ExifTool(-k).exe -<field 1 to remove>=
-<field 2 to remove>= ... <image filename>

So if I want to remove Sharpness and Shadow Tint, I'll need to run:

<path to>\ExifTool(-k).exe -Sharpness= -ShadowTint= <image filename>

That's it. Notice that the spaces in the field names are removed when you execute ExifTool.

To make life easier, and that's always one of my goals, I've written up a simple batch file to handle the removal of a bunch of fields that are written out by Lightroom. You can get the batch file here.

What you'll need to do is the following:

1. Download the CleanUpEXIF.bat batch file
   Ideally, you'll probably want to save it in the same directory as where you installed ExifTool
2. Edit the first line of the batch file to point to the installation location of your ExifTool
   Basically, you'll need to replace the "<path to>" in the first line with the correct path
3. For ease of use, you might want to create a link of the batch file to your desktop
4. Now all you'll need to do to remove the metadata fields from your images is to drag your images onto the link on your desktop and Bob's your uncle

What will happen when you modify the metadata is that ExifTool will copy the original file into another file with an extra extension of ".orig" and adds "_original" to the end of the filename, and remove the metadata from the actual file.

In the batch file, you'll see lines such as:

-Software= ^
-ModifyDate= ^
-CreatorTool= ^
-MetadataDate= ^

Each line is a field to remove. The caret ("^") at the end of each line is a continuation character to tell Windows that the command line hasn't ended yet. To add other fields to remove, just code in the fields into the batch file with the same format.

So why didn't I make it even easier and have this as an option through the right-click context, like I originally did with ExifTool? Well, the problem is with Windows filename length handling. If you try to do this with the right-click context, the filename passed to ExifTool is the shortened 8.3 version, rather than the original name. When it modfies the file and writes out the name, it uses the shortened 8.3 version, which really isn't what I want. So if your original filename is "20080403_HohRainForest_1398.jpg", instead of passing the full filename to ExifTool for renaming, MS Windows passes the shortened 8.3 version or "200804~1.jpg". This means your modified images no longer have the same names as your actual file.

If someone has a way around this, I'm all ears.
