Spoiler alert for this week’s episode. Don’t read if you haven’t watched….yada yada yada.

I’m going to see how many blog entries I can write about Survivor that possess a pun about sugar. Because if you didn’t know: I LOVE HER. What a play! What a move! Crystal and Kenny should be kissing her ass right about now!

Ladies and gentlemen, Survivor Gabon started last night, October 30th, at 8pm. FINALLY we get some solid action and a good twist! And the first season blindside!

Let’s clap it up for my gal:

So last week I didn’t blog about Survivor even though I promised to do so every week. 1. I was bored last week and worried that the season was going to be a wash. 2. Kelly is annoying and I’m glad she’s gone. I’m now going to continue with life pretending that “Kelly” never happened to Survivor, just like I’m doing with G.C. But let’s be serious: might as well trim the fat early.

So this week: there was a reward challenge…which was cut off in Connecticut because of a missing 1 month old. Moral of: Fang lost. Wow, a shocker! Kota got letters from home and a bangin’ picnic on a cliff in Gabon. Pretty freakin’ sweet.

The twist came when Jeff told the tribes that both of them would be going to Tribal Council and that immunity this week was individual. Log rolling was the event, and Marcus took ‘em all down! In yet another twist, Jeff tells Marcus that he can grant immunity to 1 member of Fang and he gives it to Sugar.

So if we’re keeping immunity count, it is: Sugar - 1,023, Marcus - 1, everyone else - zilch.

How does someone even GET two immunity idols! That shit is bananas! Ace asks Sugar for the hidden one because he’s worried, and instead of giving him the idol she gives him a ticket home in the form of a vote. The Fang vote: 3 for Ace, 2 for Crystal, and the snake goes DOWN!

I honestly didn’t think Sugar had it in her, but she’s really setting herself up to be a major player!

In unrelated Kota news: Susie is a “moron” as Corinne rightfully called her, yet they vote out Dan. My thoughts: meh.

I’m guessing the tribes will merge next week. All Survivor fans know that that’s when the reeaal fun begins.

A new online poll has named Ghostbusters the funniest film of the past 25 years. Can’t say I disagree with that one. Apart form being one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, at the time the concept was pretty original. Three unemployed parapsychology professors start a ghost removal business. Along the way they battle a number of ghosts, the city, and eventually face the main baddie Gozer, saving New York in the process.

I read an interview that Dan Aykroyd gave, in which he said that Ghostbusters 3 definitely won’t be happening. I’d pretty much put it out of my mind until I came across the news item on imdb. According to Aykroyd, Bill Murray was the one who wasn’t interested in doing another sequel. Funny, he didn’t seem to have a problem squeezing out the stinkers Osmosis Jones and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Thanks Bill.

I don’t think I’m the only one who would like to see Peter, Ray and Egon suit up one more time. Would it be harsh to call this guy selfish? Of course they’ve pretty much aged out of the roles now, so that would make this rant pretty pointless. Well I’ll finish up with the rest of the top ten from the list:

Now I’m not the only one who suggested this particular scene…because HELLO, hottest thing I’ve ever seen on TV (and that’s including all of the porn TMN plays after hours that you forget is there until you flip by it and see more then anyone should see when trying to chill on a week night) but they chose my comment to illustrate the scene’s popularity and suitableness for the list. How cool is that?

(Tip of the hat for ProgGrrl, who saw it first.) EW.com has a full five pages of Mad Men coverage, including five hot pictures (the cover, a posed backyard shot that I find kind of annoying because it’s so posey, 2 of the ones that we were all scoopy with, and one from the same series, with Betty in that plaid dress, that I hadn’t seen before).

There’s juicy stuff here. Sterling Cooper is working on an airline campaign when a deadly plane crash out of Idlewild (the original name of Kennedy Airport), throws them into a panic. Based on the description, the date appears to be March 1, 1962.

Apparently, we’re not done with the secret identity storyline:

”Here’s the issue: Don Draper’s doing great. Dick Whitman, not so,” Weiner explains. ”And we shouldn’t stop worrying about Don being discovered. His wife doesn’t know. Will she find out? Does it matter? There’s also this whole chunk of his life that we don’t know about.”

And honestly, they’re only hinting, but I really think I’m right about Betty. I mean, they’re saying ‘redirected energy’ and they’re saying she redecorated, but honestly? Affair.

Yes, Peggy is back on the job and succeeding. And yes, Roger Sterling is back working full-time. Duck Philips is in the first episode.

They address the ratings, and AMC’s marketing:

Despite the accolades, ratings hovered only around a modest 900,000 viewers. (To compare, The Sopranos averaged 3.5 million during its freshman season.) Now, with season 2 scheduled to debut July 27, the question is: Can Mad Men build on those first-year numbers and transition from critical darling to mainstream hit? ”It was nice to fly under the radar [in the beginning], but I want to reach a huge audience,” says Weiner. ”It’s AMC’s job to find those people. And they’re finding them.” Indeed, for season 2 the cable network is preparing its biggest marketing campaign ever, budgeted at $25 million.

If we stop posting mean things about AMC, we’ll be happy. No more stinking paws!

Roberta and I have been discussing this. (And hello, that means that the blog is not enough for us, we also talk about Mad Men.)

If you read a news story about a woman who didn’t know she was pregnant, maybe gives birth in a restroom somewhere, you think “psychotic break.” (Or maybe just “woo-woo nutbag.”) And the thing I’ve really disliked about this storyline is that I like Peggy; I even admire her. She’s fighting to become more than she is; “something she hasn’t seen.” She asks for the raise; asks awkwardly, but asks. She’s wrong about the radio voices, but handles it and moves forward. She doesn’t let Pete walk all over her. She’s intelligent and kind of fierce.

So, is she also crazy? I hate to think so.

She got on the pill. The doctor, who clearly wasn’t interested in her well-being or her reproductive health, didn’t tell her that the pill is not effective birth control right away. So she had no reason to believe she had unprotected sex. She didn’t gain weight in a typically pregnant fashion (round and tight and high in the belly, minimal weight gain elsewhere), and given that she was also hungry all the time, she could easily assume she was getting fat.

It’s hard to believe she didn’t recognize kicking for what it was after six months or so (the first month of kicking, for those who don’t know, feels weird, but by the end it actually moves stuff; my son knocked a teacup off my belly from underneath). We do know that Peggy is out of touch with her body in a big way (the Rejuvenator totally surprised her), but we also know she responds to sensation in a very direct and sane way.

So what happened? Is she just crazy? Is her denial sane but very thorough? Is she just totally out of touch?

Addendum: Matt Weiner addresses it in the new EW article (more on that shortly):

”People say, ‘Peggy’s so smart!’ But the truth is she’s 20 years old. She knew and denied it. She put it out of her mind.”

So, Weiner’s contention is that denial, even deep, deep denial of something huge, is not crazy. What do you all think?

Dear Diary,

Oh boy, I did lots today. Today was so super. Here is a list of the top eight things I did today:

1. I saw a trailer for Speed Racer today. It was a really cool trailer. I think I want to make a list of the Top 12 trailers of movies based on old cartoons. This would be different from the list I proposed of the top 12 movies based on old cartoons because it would just be about the trailers

2. I had an awesome breakfast. The top five things in my breakfast today, in no particular order, were scrambled eggs, whole wheat toast, crispy bacon, Valencia orange juice, and strawberry jam. I don’t know if it ranks in my top 15 breakfasts of all time, but it certainly ranks in my top nine homemade breakfasts of all time

3. I got in a heated debate about American Idol today with one of my coworkers. She said that David Archuleta was the greatest Idol contestant whose last name ended in a vowel and I said he wouldn’t even crack the top four, what with Fantasia Barrino, Justin Guarini, Bo Bice, and Kimberly Locke. She said nuh-uh, Locke doesn’t end with a vowel and I said yeah-huh. And she was totally better. Remember that song “8th World Wonder.” That has numbers and words. I like numbers and words. It’s almost like a list but not quite

4. I thought of several lists today. The top three lists I thought of were Top 25 Movies featuring veterinarians, Top 15 actors who appeared in Burger King commercials (Elisabeth Shue, I’m thinking you’re up there!), and Top 50 uses of synthesizers in 80s songs. Those are awesome lists.

5. I got home early so I was able to catch up on the TiVo for my favorite show: E’s “The Daily 10.” That show is so cool. It puts entertainment news in list form, which makes it more important to me. They should really do the news news, like the Darfur stuff, you know, in list form. It would make it so much easier to follow.

6. I did a list with Roman numerals instead of numbers, and that was kind of neat. Numbers are better for lists, but Roman numerals are good for a change of pace or if you meet a Roman and you want to speak his language. Letters are OK too, but you’re going have so many letters in the actual list, you should just use numbers. I think it goes, in order, numbers, Roman numerals, letters, and then wingdings. Wingdings are the worst because they’re weird.

7. Someone posted a comment that it was so much better years ago when Entertainment Weekly put out an important list once or twice a year, but I totally nailed that guy. I gave him 20 reasons why daily lists are better than biannual lists and I ordered them from least awesome to most awesome which is the best way to structure a list. It was definitely in the top 75 responses to a reader complaint about our lists of all time. So eat that, hotpants17!

8. I bought an orangutan.

So that was my day. Out of all the days in the week it was definitely in the top 7 Write to you tomorrow!
