The boys are back in town.

Manchester United is back to winning ways but are we flying yet? The game against West Ham yesterday allowed anyone who saw the quality United possessed in all areas of the pitch. Rafael has proved to be an amazing asset on the right hand side and may very well be as good as Evra is one day. That does pose a threat to already giants Wes Brown and Gary Neville. Ronaldo has returned to scoring form and for the first time since this summer’s events with bastards Real Madrid, Ronaldo looks like a devil once more. Tevez also showed great form despite not scoring a goal. I guess no one really needs to talk about Berbatov as he displayed his best football so far for the season with amazing touches and play on the ball. Rooney came on and could have scored his 100th for United in style but it was not in the cards. He was overflowing with confidence and looks to have a fantastic season ahead. Anderson shows signs of becoming another midfield legend like Scholes or Keane. Other great performers on the night included Rio and Vidic as well as Nani. The real questions are why didn’t they score more than two goals? They should have held the ball better in the second half especially having Tevez, Rooney, Berbs and Ronaldo all running at the defence. I assume they need more time together. At the end everyone wanted their chance to score and the team suffered goals because of that. United maybe flying high, but they will have to maintain this in order to catch up to the league leaders. All I can say now is we look to more and more from this team as we truly have what it takes to take the Scouse back to hell! Viva Ronaldo, Viva Ronaldo, He runs down the wing, hear United sing, Viva RONALDO!

Two matches back to back against Arsenal and United would definitely be a tough ask for any team, but if there is a team that would fancy their chances to get at least one result in these games, it has to be Everton.

Whilst Goodison Park has been a happy hunting ground for us in the past few years, it is by no means an easy game. They have the quality to beat anyone in the League day and would have expected to knock on the heels of the top four this season after another season where they finished 5th. David Moyes has managed and created a good team which believes in playing football but has been unable to generate any real threat to the domination of the top 4. The Toffees hopes however have already faded with them languishing in 16th Place without a single win at home and having just managed a single point in four outings there.

After a late surge into the market to buy players, Moyes has been unable to bed them into the squad so far, but the quality which he has brought in, even though a tad over priced, should pay dividended sooner rather than later. Further, Moyes has finally dispelled concerns over his own future by agreeing a new contract with the management and it may give the club the left it needs.

Everton may have a lot of players coming back from injury which may include Segundo Castillo, Joseph Yobo and Victor Anichebe who missed the Arsenal game. Tony Hibbert may also face a race to make it to the game. However, Tim Cahill would be a big miss as he remains suspended for a red card which he received against Liverpool.

Moyes would be expected to deploy a 4-5-1 with Yakubu as the lone striker, but he may also surprise us by starting with Louis Saha and Yobo as a partnership. Saha would know a lot about how United play and specially the rock solid defence having faced them in training so many times.

On the other hand, We have run onto a purple patch of form after a less than impressive start and won our last six matches in all competitions. Our defence has looked solid and the return of Evra and Ferdinand will give it even greater stability. Carrick was in training but SAF thinks that he would not be fit untill the game with West Ham in midweek. Tevez is still desperate to break in to the team but I feel that SAF may continue with the Berba and Rooney partnership this time and rest one of them next week. Rooney has put himself in the limelight in this game with a target to reach his milestone at Goodison Park and based on his form, I dare not bet against it. The team looks well balanced even with the midfield injuries and Anderson would be keen to hold on to his starting spot. On the left wing though Nani’s performance against Celtic should have done enough for him to be picked over our three lunged Park.

I hope to see an open game with Everton being forced to attack at home and United playing swiftly on the counter attack.

Prediction

Everton 0- United 4: I do not expect out team to do any favours to a struggling Everton and with all our forwards hitting top gear and Ronaldo, there would be a feast of goals in the match. United’s history of 4-0’s also tempts me to go for the scoreline.

Please don't come back injured!

Well, it’s that time again… just as the young season seems about to get into swing, we get hit with the international break.  Arsenal, and the other top level clubs, will have most of their rosters away from the club to play twice in five days while clubs like Fulham get a breather and time to re-energize.  With not much going on around the club, we can take a few moments to reflect on the season so far as well as some of the major issues surrounding the club and its supporters.

Are We Better Than Last Season?

Many Arsenal fans are debating amongst themselves the question of whether we are stronger or weaker than last season.  This is a tricky question because you can come up with an answer in two ways: on paper or on the pitch.  On paper, all we are missing from last season is a straight replacement for Matheiu Flamini.  Hleb has been more than ably replaced by Samir Nasri while Fabianski and Denilson can, theoretically, fill the minor roles played by Jens Lehmann and Gilberto last season.

However, there is another way to see improvement.  Last season, we were at our weakest on the wings.  While playing a 4-5-1 with Hleb in the hole and Rosicky injured, we inevitably played Emmanuel Eboue and Abou Diaby as our two wingers.  This year, so far at least, the health of Robin van Persie has allowed Arsene to play the more favoured 4-4-2 and replace Eboue and Diaby with Walcott and Nasri.  To me this is a significant improvement over last season that probably outweighs the difference between Flamini and Denilson or Diaby at the moment.  We now also have the experienced defender we needed last season in Mikael Silvestre if he can remain healthy.

As for on the pitch, we saw last week against Newcastle that, yes, we are still “the Arsenal.”  The football is still smooth, intelligent, creative, and free-flowing and, despite not playing near our best against West Brom or Fulham, we are still only one point off the top after 3 matches.

The Hack Was Back

Nasri gets targeted by a talentless thug; who is also a cunt.

What you are seeing above is, of course, the infamous tackle by legendary cunt, Joey Barton on Samir Nasri last weekend near the end of Arsenal’s 3-nil dismantling of Newcastle in Keven Keegan’s last match as manager.  Most have questioned Keegan’s judgment in bringing Barton on in the first place considering he had an FA hearing pending the following Friday.  Well that hearing came and went, and so did Kevin Keegan (maybe his judgment isn’t that bad after all).

Barton received a 12 game suspension.  Enough??  Hell no.  He could have used an extra three for the challenge on Nasri.  Look at how he is leaning into Nasri’s body even though Nasri is not standing over the ball.  Look at how he sticks his elbow out and tries to crash right into his knee.  Look at how Nasri just barely escapes being Eduardo II by getting his foot unplanted.  After the tackle, Barton went on to give one of the biggest wise-ass grins he could muster.

The man is an absolute disgrace to the game; to anyone who’s ever played the game; and certainly to anyone who has ever loved the game.  I know it’s been said a thousand times before but the game would be far better off without that two-bit hack.

200 and Counting…

Cesc Fabregas played his 200th game for Arsenal last Saturday when he took the pitch at the Emirates against Newcastle and showed, again, why he is what American sports fans call a “franchise player.”  Not only is he the real “heart and soul” of Arsenal on the pitch, but he is fully on board with Arsene and his policy: “We sign what we need… at Arsenal there’s a different policy and we have to respect that… the day we win something with these players, with this policy, this atmosphere and style, there will be a big change - almost a revelation.”

The thing that is most impressive about Cesc, besides his on-field displays, is his level of maturity at such a young age. This has been evidenced throughout the last year in numerous episodes from firing his agent when he linked Cesc with Barcelona in the media against the player’s wishes to speaking of now knowing what it means to be “a winner” following Spain’s victory at Euro2008 to showing his full support for Arsene and the club.  The kid knows what he wants and he has a long-term vision of his career unlike many players who are older and, supposedly, more mature.  We all know what happens to players when they leave Arsenal but apparently players like Flamini and Hleb don’t.  Well, Cesc does:

“I cannot remember any player who left Arsenal and has been a superstar. Don’t get me wrong, Alex Hleb and Mathieu Flamini are two of my best friends in football and I wish them all the best but Arsenal is Arsenal. This club has something special that no others have. We have to take care of it. I want to play for Arsenal. When you see football all around the world you see very few teams who play the way that we play. I just enjoy it. I feel it is my home now.  I am happy with everything, my No 4, playing for Arsenal in centre midfield and giving 100 per cent every, every game. But if the boss thinks in one or two years I am ready to be captain, I will take the armband.”

Now, if we want to be honest, we all know that Cesc is the Arsenal captain in everything but name.  Gallas may wear the armband but it is Cesc whom the players are willing to follow anywhere.  Those who worry about Cesc’s short-term future with Arsenal should feel some peace-of-mind after reading those quotes.  Cesc understands what it is about the club that makes it special in general and especially to the supporters.  Just the fact that he is thinking about being one in a long line of Arsenal legends who captained the side shows he sees his future with the club and shows his dedication to the club, the supporters, and his teammates.

Finally?

What comes first... the domestic goal or the international cap?

Arsenal have sixteen players away during this international break including Gael Clichy, who, somehow, is still awaiting his first full senior cap with France. Clichy has finally been getting called up by Domenech beginning last year for matches with Spain and Congo but has failed to see any action as of yet.  The former Cannes trainee and Toulouse native has 10 caps for the Under-21s as well as two appearances in friendlies with France’s B (or A dash) side.  It is mind boggling how Domenech can keep the undisputed best left back in the Premier League, if not the world, on the bench.  While United’s Patrice Evra has up until now held his place ahead of Clichy, it has to be only a matter of time as Clichy, while still providing the attacking  if not scoring threat of Evra, is clearly superior in terms of defending and attitude.

La Supercoupe de l’UEFA a une fois de plus tourné le dos au vainqueur de la Ligue des Champions. Cette pemière victoire russe dans l’histoire de la compétition annonce l’ambition des clubs de ce pays qui bénéficient du talent de joueurs locaux qui rechignent à s’expatrier et de la fortune des dirigeants qui peuvent s’offrir des joueurs (et des entraîneurs) étrangers à des prix défiant toute concurrence.

Préparer la Ligue des Champions

Le Zénith Saint-Pétersbourg avait hier l’occasion de s’étalonner en vue de la prochaine Ligue des champions (les Russes affronteront la Juventus, le Real Madrid et les bulgares de Borisov). Le moins que l’on puisse dire est que les joueurs sont prêts. Certes Manchester eut la possession du ballon au cours de la première demi-heure (65%) mais cette  mainmise fut vaine. Le trio Tymoschuk-Denisov-Zyrianov était omniprésent, empêchait les transmissions dans l’entre-jeu et annihilait toute initiative de Scholes ou Fletcher. Nani n’a pris pour sa part aucune initiative.

Pourtant c’est Tevez, très remuant qui allait offrir la première grosse occasion aux Red Devils en prenant de vitesse la défense russe pour remiser sur Rooney qui échouait par manque de spontanéité face à Malafeiev, sorti très rapidement.

Cette occasion réveillait les russes et dès lors dans le dernier quart d’heure de la première période  on assista à un attaque-défense sur le but mancunien. Ceux-ci ne parvenaient plus à sortir de leur camp. Pogrebnyak mettait en difficulté la charnière centrale en servant de point d’appui jusque dans la surface grâce à une technique et une protection de balle impressionnantes.

Coté mancunien on se mettait en difficulté notamment sur les cotés avec un Evra, qui avait laissé Anyukov prendre l’espace à plusieurs reprises dans son dos dès les premières minutes et surtout avec Neville qui retrouvait le brassard de capitaine et une place de titulaire. Son bilan de la première période est éloquent: il commet une faute inutile qui amène un coup-franc avec occasion de but (sur laquelle il couvre Krizanac), il est dépassé en vitesse et en technique dans sa surface de réparation par Danny et Pogrebnyak; offensivement ses centres sont imprécis.

Les Russes ouvrent le score sur une action symbolique : Danny frappe un corner au premier poteau, Denisov dévie et lobe Van Der Sar, Pogrebnyak conclut de la tête. Sur cette action, les russes ont fait montre de leur détermination et ont remporté chaque duel.

Une réaction, pas de révolte

Dans les derniers instants de la première période ainsi que dans le premier quart d’heure de la seconde période, Manchester ne réagit pas dans le jeu mais dans l’attitude : Scholes, Rooney et Anderson sont avertis alors que Vidic coupable d’un coup de coude sur Pogrebnyak va se plaindre auprès de  l’arbitre pour une raison indéterminée…

Les Mancuniens vont payer une nouvelle fois leur attentisme à la 57^ème minute, Danny contrôle tranquillement de la poitrine à 40m du but des Red Devils, se retourne, il progresse face à des défenseurs sur le reculoir, entre dans la surface, crochète aisément Ferdinand et prend Van Der Sar à contre-pied. Le fantôme de Manchester United est mené 2-0 par le Zénith.

Les Anglais vont alors réagir, notamment grâce à Tévez qui applique la méthode Rooney : il descend très bas chercher les ballons, en chipe dans les pieds des défenseurs adverses et se montre très agressif (il aurait dû être exclu pour un tacle violent sur Tymoschuk). Problème : il est le seul à se battre de la sorte; Rooney, qui n’a pas son agressivité habituelle, ne profite pas non plus des décalages créés par son compère argentin. La prestation de Nani confirme qu’Alex Ferguson a bien fait de refuser les millions du Real pour conserver Cristiano Ronaldo. Cependant, aidés par la fatigue côté russe (Pogrebnyak transparent et Arshavine ne jouant que par fulgurances en seconde période) et par la déstabilisation de la défense centrale (Puygrenier et Krizanac étant sortis), les Mancuniens vont réduire le score sur un corner où cette fois l’attentisme est coté russe. Vidic est l’auteur du but qui conclut sa bien meilleure seconde période, au cours de laquelle il a éteint Pogrebnyak.

De la suite dans les idées…

Le dernier quart d’heure ne sera pas enflammé, faute d’envie de la part des Mancuniens, mais sera seulement marqué par le ridicule but de la main de Scholes, sanctionné par un second carton jaune et symbole d’une attitude qui ne pouvait pas permettre aux Red Devils de s’imposer.

En définitive, Gus Hiddink - qui était dans les tribunes – peut être rassuré : Malafeiev, Anyukov, Zyrianov, Pogrebnyak et surtout Denisov ont été performants. Ce dernier a montré pourquoi Advocaat ne pouvait se passer de lui (Voir la Revue d’effectif) : technique, vision de jeu, agressivité, il était partout. Le capitaine Tymoschuk a été impérial dans la récupération, l’envie et la relance.

Coté mancunien, Tévez a montré de l’envie et beaucoup de qualités mais ce match a montré pourquoi Sir Alex souhaite recruter un avant centre de métier. L’Argentin et Rooney officient dans le même style et lorsque Ronaldo n’est pas là pour profiter des brèches créées par ces deux-là, il manque quelqu’un pour conclure les actions.

En défense, les deux centraux se sont repris après l’heure de jeu, la facilité de Danny à inscrire le second but les aura certainement réveillés. Les latéraux n’ont pas été à la hauteur et l’entre-jeu (Scholes-Anderson-Fletcher) a été surclassé.

La victoire du CSKA Moscou en coupe de l’UEFA en 2005 avait été suivie d’une défaite en Supercoupe de l’UEFA (3-1 face à Liverpool) et n’avait pas eu de confirmation. Nul doute que le Zénith, au contraire, fera parler de lui et ce nouveau titre européen n’est certainement qu’une étape dans l’ambitieux projet de Dick Advocaat.

VS

Depuis 2000, la Supercoupe de l’UEFA oppose le vainqueur de la Ligue des Champions au vainqueur de la coupe de l’UEFA. La logique n’est pas véritablement respectée puisque sur les huit trophées décernés au stade Louis II depuis la création de cette nouvelle formule, le partage est équitable entre les tenants de la C1 et les tenants de la C3[1]. Autre fait étonnant, si aucun club russe n’a jamais remporté cette Supercoupe, Manchester United n’a remporté qu’une des 7 supercoupes d’Europe décernées à des représentants anglais depuis 1974. C’était en 1991 et ce trophée, acquis dans des circonstances particulières[2], ne doit pas rester comme un grand souvenir pour les supporters mancuniens. Cette supercoupe de l’UEFA opposera donc en quelque sorte deux novices en la matière vendredi soir.

Manchester en a-t-il envie ?

Alex Ferguson est pour l’heure préoccupé par la préparation d’une nouvelle saison qui s’annonce longue. Outre les traditionnels matchs de championnat et de coupes, les Red Devils devront disputer la Coupe du Monde des Clubs au Japon, du 11 au 21 décembre, c’est-à-dire au milieu de leur saison et à la veille des matchs souvent décisifs du boxing day. Il semble donc que l’enjeu de la Supercoupe d’Europe soit occulté par les soucis de Manchester: blessure à la cheville de Ronaldo, préparation tronquée de nombreux cadres, notamment Rooney, victime d’un virus, et Anderson, médaille de bronze aux JO.

Après deux journées de championnat, les Red Devils semblent encore se chercher (1 victoire, 1 nul, 2 buts pour, 1 contre). Aussi, cette Supercoupe d’Europe sera vraisemblablement abordée comme un ultime match de préparation. Elle permet de couper avec le championnat (et évite d’affronter le récent tombeur d’Arsenal : Fulham). Et, compte tenu du contingent mancunien qui va rejoindre les différentes sélections, la trêve internationale ne pourra être mise à profit pour préparer le déplacement à Anfield Road le 13 septembre alors que Liverpool paraît déjà en forme et a remporté ses deux premiers matchs.

Un avant-goût du Manchester 2010

Comme il l’a fait en préparation, Ferguson pourrait donner du temps de jeu à ses jeunes pousses (voir la Revue d’Effectif). L’ossature de l’équipe restera classique mais les changements pourraient nous permettre de découvrir des talents précoces. Une titularisation surprise n’est pas à exclure (Possebon à la place d’Anderson ou Campbell à la place de Rooney).

Un jeu et des joueurs en question

Ayant sacrifié le championnat national au profit de la coupe de l’UEFA au printemps dernier, le Zenith souffre aujourd’hui d’un déficit de préparation, qui est plutôt propre aux équipes occidentales à cette période de l’année. En effet, les joueurs de Saint Pétersbourg ont coupé avec le championnat le 19 avril (le championnat russe avait alors débuté depuis à peine un mois) et n’ont repris que le 6 juillet. Ils ont enchaîné depuis 13 matches (dont 5 en tant que  « match en retard ») en un mois et demi. Le bilan mitigé de ces 13 journées de championnat (6V/3N/4D) et le mauvais classement en championnat (6^ème à 11 points du Rubin Kazan) s’expliquent par le fait que le club a dû jouer ces 13 matches dans un laps de temps très limité et en bénéficiant de moins de temps de repos que leurs adversaires.

L’Euro entre également en ligne de compte : les joueurs qui n’y ont pas participé n’ont pas joué un match de football pendant de 2 mois et ceux qui ont participé à l’épopée russe en Juin (voir la Revue d’Effectif) ne pouvaient pas être dans des conditions physiques et psychologiques optimales pour jouer avec leur club dès le mois de juillet. Le meilleur exemple étant celui d’Andreï Arshavine, qui après avoir fait tourner la tête des plus grands clubs européens, tarde à remettre de l’ordre dans la sienne.

C’est donc une équipe et des joueurs qui paient actuellement le prix du succès qui se présenteront vendredi soir à Monaco et le challenge d’un nouveau titre européen pourrait bien remettre cette équipe sur la voie de la réussite.

Pronostics

Didier Rousté: 2-1

Victoire étriquée des Mancuniens, encore en rôdage. Leur supériorité technique et la solidité de leur défense devraient permettre aux Red Devils de dominer un Zénith Saint-Pétersbourg qui ne parvient pas à retrouver sa forme printanière.

Alex Muiz : 2-2

Les Mancuniens ne sont pas au mieux en ce début de saison et l’enjeu européen motivera tout particulièrement l’équipe russe : les joueurs voudront confirmer les promesses du printemps et certains d’entre eux pourraient vouloir se montrer à 3 jours de la fin du mercato.

Comme l’an dernier, les Red Devils commencent leur saison de manière poussive (2 nuls en 2007, un victoire et un nul en 2008[1]). Notons que Critiano Ronaldo et Nani n’ont pas encore joué, Anderson revient tout juste des JO, Darren Fletcher est le seul et unique buteur du club… Bref, il semble qu’il n’y ait guère d’enseignements à tirer de ce début de saison. Pas si sûr…

L’analyse de la préparation de Manchester United est forcément biaisée par les absences des internationaux qui composent l’équipe de Ferguson. Néanmoins, le technicien écossais profite traditionnellement de cette période pour tester des jeunes pousses aux aptitudes prometteuses. D’autant plus que très peu de mouvements ont été signalés du côté d’Old Trafford (Sylvestre est parti à Arsenal et Berbatov est toujours espéré)… Mais Sir Alex a déjà fait un recrutement aux airs de samba en janvier denier (Possebon, Fabio et Rafael Da Silva).

La relève est déjà là

Quatre jeunes ressortent du lot. Deux d’entre eux ont déjà eu leur chance en Premiere League cette saison :

Þ    Rodrigo Possebon (milieu de terrain brésilien, âgé de 19 ans) a fait forte impression lors des matchs de préparation et est entré en jeu face à Newcastle et à Portsmouth. Ferguson est décidé à donner sa chance à cet élégant milieu de terrain qui possède un gros volume de jeu et qui pourrait être le successeur de Paul Scholes ;

Þ    Fraizer Campbell (attaquant anglais de 21 ans) était titulaire lors de l’ouverture du Championnat. Prêté à Anvers (21 buts en 31 matchs) puis Hull City (15 buts en 34 matchs) ces deux dernières saisons, il possède la détermination et l’agressivité qui plaisent aux supporters britanniques (2 buts en 6 matchs de préparation)

United possède en réserve deux autres jeunes joueurs qui auront du temps de jeu au gré des absences des titulaires : les jumeaux Pareira Da Silva, alignés ensemble en amical début août. Ces deux latéraux sont déjà surnommés les « Neville brésiliens ». Rafael, le droitier, sera soumis à la concurrence du rescapé des Neville (Gary, l’aîné), mais Ferguson apprécie ce joueur explosif. Côté gauche, après le départ de Sylvestre, Fabio est le suppléant désigné de Patrice Evra.

Ferguson, ce manager hors pair

Ces quatre jeunes montrent la puissance du réseau de ‘scouts’ et de formateurs dont dispose Ferguson. Cette force se dégage également d’un effectif, bâti dans l’ombre des titres obtenus à coups de milliards de roubles par Chelsea, et qui semble pouvoir dominer l’Angleterre et l’Europe pour quelques années encore.

Après une domination outrageuse de la Premiere League pendant plus d’une décennie (entre 1993 et 2003, les Red Devils ont glané huit des onze titres de champion mis en jeu![2]), Manchester a laissé place à Arsenal (2004) puis Chelsea (2005, 2006).

Au cours de ces saisons, Ferguson a patiemment forgé l’équipe double championne d’Angleterre et vainqueur de la Ligue des Champions : Cristiano Ronaldo (recruté en 2003), Rooney, Saha (2004), Park, Van der Sar (2005), Vidic, Evra, Carrick (2006). Tout en conservant ses cadres, Scholes et Giggs notamment, et en intégrant à pas comptés des joueurs formés au club (Fletcher, O’Shea),  Manchester a reconquis le titre en 2007 ; avant d’ajouter un recrutement quatre étoiles (Hargreaves, Tevez, Anderson, Nani) qui a permis de mater la fougue des jeunes canonniers et résister aux stars blues pour offrir un deuxième doublé historique au peuple mancunien.

Le management de Sir Alex Ferguson a quelque chose de déconcertant, détonnant, voire magique.

La force du collectif

Avec six nominés aux UEFA Awards (sur vingt): Van Der Sar, Vidic, Ferdinand, Scholes, Rooney, Ronaldo, le talent individuel des Red Devils est mis en exergue. Mais c’est une dynamique, une puissance collective que dégage Manchester, même si Ronaldo est (trop ?) souvent mis en lumière.

Cette force collective a atteint son paroxysme lors de la leçon de football donnée à l’AS Roma l’an dernier (le fameux 7 à 1). Voir la vidéo.

intraitable, l’infatigable Scholes ratisse d’innombrables ballons, l’énergique Anderson fait valoir sa vista et sa qualité de passe, les perles portugaises Nani et Ronaldo mettent le feu sur les ailes avec Giggs et Park, Tevez marque des buts importants… mais pour bien comprendre ce qui fait la force de Manchester United, il faut souligner les apports de joueurs parfois négligés par les commentateurs :

Þ    Rooney, l’ex-enfant terrible du foot anglais, se dévoue pour l’équipe, occupant tout le couloir droit à mesure que la finale de la Ligue des Champions se dessinait ;

Þ    Hargreaves met sa polyvalence au service du collectif, ne rechignant pas à la tâche et accomplissant ses différentes missions avec brio (arrière droit, milieu récupérateur/relayeur ou encore milieu droit);

Þ    les fidèles seconds Carrick, Fletcher et O’Shea dont le jeu sobre et efficace complète parfaitement la pléiade de talents qu’ils servent.

Ferguson construit ses équipes sur une force collective qui transcende les individualités. D’ailleurs, les supporters du nord industriel de l’Angleterre se souviennent de l’incroyable implosion de certains cadres de la première équipe championne d’Angleterre et d’Europe (1999). Alors que Manchester présentait un visage relativement jeune[3], les trois titres gagnés par la suite l’on été grâce à des Van Nistelrooy, Veron, Barthez, Blanc, Sylvestre, Forlan, Howard… qui ont pallié les méformes subites d’Andy Cole et Dwitgh Yorke, les départs en retraite de Schmeichel et Irwin, le pétage de plomb de Jaap Stam (il attaqua Ferguson dans sa biographie) ou encore l’évanescence des talents éphémères de Johnseng et Blomqvist.

Le départ de Beckham en 2003, sur un titre et une brouille mémorable avec son mentor, clôt un cycle qui aura vu passé de nombreux joueurs sans ébranler la machine à gagner.

Combien de temps Manchester United pourra régner sur l’Europe ?

En 2008, les “vieux” Scholes et Giggs assurent la transition, mais Ferguson a déjà préparé l’avenir en intégrant progressivement Anderson et Nani dans son onze de départ. Les recrues du dernier mercato sont promises à la même trajectoire. De plus, la jeunesse de certains cadres interpelle: Ronaldo (23 ans), Rooney (24 ans), Vidic (26 ans).

Par ailleurs, la rivalité avec Chelsea a laissé les Mancuniens sous pression. Ceux-ci voudront encore prouver leur valeur face à des Londoniens qui les ont accrochés jusqu’au bout du suspens dans l’incroyable quête de doublé des Red Devils… En outre, Arsenal et Liverpool sont aussi en embuscade.

Compte tenu de la difficulté à remporter la Ligue des Champions (concurrence plus dense, incertitude des matchs à élimination directe…), on peut difficilement tabler sur un accaparement de la ‘coupe aux grandes oreilles’ par les hommes de Ferguson (l’Ajax l’avait fait mais c’était un autre temps : 1971 à 1973). Toutefois, en Premiere League, les Red Devils pourraient asseoir leur domination… et offrir à Ferguson un troisième titre consécutif (exploit qu’il n’a jamais réussi).

Le urla al gol di De Rossi, di ieri sera, hanno superato il record acustico già impresso dalle mie corde vocali 2 anni fa quando segnò Grosso, contro i tedeschi. Dentro quella punizione, deviata beffardamente da Titì Henry, c’era tutto il cuore, la rabbia, la decisione, la classe di un ragazzo Romano e Romanista che è cresciuto all’ombra di Francesco Totti, soffrendo, sudando, conquistando prima Roma e poi l’Italia, e che adesso ha preso il suo numero di maglia in nazionale e lo porta con onore e con merito. E fanculo ai criticoni milanesi e torinesi che volevano i loro Pirlo e Del Piero con il 10 storico sulle spalle. Inchinatevi adesso, criticoni.

Quel gol da la vittoria all’Italia, da la vittoria a Roma, a Spalletti (quanto hai goduto Lucià?), a Donadoni e a tutti gli Italiani, che finalmente hanno riconosciuto e si sono inchinati di fronte alla realtà: non c’erano Cassano ieri, nè Del Piero, a portare l’Italia ai quarti, a superare il “Group of Death”, ma due che in nazionale ci sono sempre stati, e che senza rumore, continueranno ad esserci: Pirlo e sopratutto De Rossi. Peccato per quel giallo, Andrea, perchè forse potevi prenderti una rivincita, potevi vendicare il tuo Milan, colpito in Febbraio da Cesc Fabregas. Peccato davvero, Domenica i 2/3 del centrocampo italiano probabilmente saranno romanisti, e va bene così.

Che grande Italia, è vero, di fronte alle difficoltà, di fronte ai grandi avversari, ai cugini di sempre, ci rialziamo alla maniera nostra. In Spagna ‘El Pais‘ scrive “Italia, siempre Italia“, Italia sempre l’Italia. E’vero, siamo fatti così, soffriamo all’iniziamo e poi alla fine ci rialziamo in maniera anche teatrale, ma è ok così, la sofferenza è consuetudine in Italia. Toni ci ha fatto soffrire tanto, è stanco, si vede, non riesce a giocare e sopratutto a segnare come vuole e come sa fare. Sullo 0-0 sbaglia un’occasione che era più facile di un rigore, poi addirittura va vicino al gol da cineteca, di tacco al volo, sarebbe entrato nella storia, niente. Prende pure la traversa Luca, a partita quasi finita, è pure sfortunato il ragazzo, ma speriamo che non sbagli Domenica con gli spagnoli.

La partita di ieri sera è entrata di diritto nella mia “hit parade” dei match da ricordare, insieme alle immancabili Italia - Germania, Italia - Francia e Scozia - Italia. Forse mai l’Italia è stata superiore alla Francia sul campo, a livello tattico, fisico, agonistico, mentale, tecnico…a tutti i livelli. La Francia è solo l’ombra della nazionale campione del mondo e d’Europa di Zidane, ma non solo per la mancanza “der capoccione”. Non c’è più gruppo, non c’è più squadra, ci si aggrappa al leader, al salvatore che metta tutto a posto, ci si aggrappa a Ribery, sfortunato, uscito dopo 10 minuti per una brutta caduta (forse 6 mesi di stop dice la Gazzetta, che brutto colpo), ci si aggrappa a Thierry Henry, all’Henry di Londra, quello dei 236 goals con la maglia dell’Arsenal, quello degli 82 assists, numeri incredibili. Ma l’Henry di ieri era quello di Barcellona, quello rilegato a giocare sulla fascia, quello che ormai è solo un’ombra sbiadita. Ci si aggrappa a Benzema, troppo giovane, miglior calciatore nella Ligue 1, tanti gol, si, ma con quali difese? Dove trovi in Francia difensori come Panucci? Ci si aggrappa a Domenech, che non si smentisce mai, lascia fuori tutti gli “italiani” possibili. Mexes e Trezeguet ieri dopo il fallaccio del rigore di Abidal (ma non era un terzino?) e i 3 tiri in porta totali della Francia avranno ridacchiato. E’ finito un ciclo in Francia, basta Domenech, è ora di Deschamps forse, e noi ti aspettiamo allora Didier. Un altro che abbiamo cresciuto noi Italiani, e che ci ritroveremo contro, forse.

Un pensiero va anche agli spagnoli, prossimi avversari. Spaventoso David Villa, capocannoniere, e fa sempre paura Fernando Torres. Ancora loro, gli spagnoli, quest’anno quanti incontri cruciali in Champions. Milan - Arsenal l’ha decisa uno spagnolo, Fabregas. Inter - Liverpool un altro iberico, Torres. Però nessuno dimentichi Real Madrid - Roma, anzi Donadoni prendi da esempio quella partita, quella volta gli Spagnoli sono stati affondati, e forse qualche giocatore del Real entrando in campo Domenica sera e guardando in faccia gli azzurri troverà alcune faccie già viste: De Rossi, Aquilani, Perrotta, Panucci. Che sia di buon auspicio anche questo.

Cronaca della partita.

Who would have thought pre-tournament that France v Italy could have no meaning for either side? As it stands, if the two draw, Romania would go through unless they lose by more than three goals. If, however, Romania doesn’t beat Holland, the winner of the France v Italy game goes through.

France has apparently not lost to Italy in regular play over 90 minutes since 1990. While this is too close to call and Panucci and Chiellini don’t really inspire that much confidence in me, and Zambrotta is going to be struggling against Henry or Ribery, I think Italy wins this match. Buffon is going to be tough to beat and will make the difference. Also, Italy has been creating chances - they just haven’t been able to score. I think that changes today.

There have been rumblings that Cassano is going to start alongside Toni. I think that’s the right move. He’s been very creative and slippery while playing in the hole behind Toni. That’s the way we assume Del Piero would have played, but he didn’t do much in the last game. So start Cassano on the left behind Toni and keep Camoranesi on the other side to do a lot of the running. The midfield has got to start Aquilani alongside Pirlo and De Rossi. While there may be a desire to start Gattuso, given the magnitude of the game, I would not do that. Aquilani and De Rossi are more offensive minded players and De Rossi can play the holding role very well. Bring Gattuso on late in the second half if you are ahead and need to protect the lead. Aquilani has a very good shot, is good going forward and has young legs, which you are going to need today. Perrotta is not the answer for this game.

For France, it is simple. Play the best team, Domenech. Here, I will do it for you. Henry and Benzema up front. Ribery, Nasri and Malouda behind them, with Maka or Diarra as the holding midfielder. While Toulalan has played well, I think Diarra has more quality going forward. Evra, Gallas, Thuram and Sagnol at the back with Coupet in goal. If you are scared of this lineup being too aggressive in the first half, start both holding midfielders and drop Malouda. However, you need to be aggressive and try to score the first goal. You are not playing Turkey, so you should be good if you score the first goal.

Romania - everything seems to be in your favor. The Dutch will be aggressive and open but without their best players executing the total football game plan. That plays into your hands. Plus, you have taken four points out of six from them in qualifying. So you know their personnel and style. Just don’t give up the first goal to the Dutch and you will be fine. The other issue, of course, is that you are going to have to play for 90 minutes without a let up as the Dutch are going to try to score, and are capable of doing so, for 90 minutes. Don’t give in to the temptation of starting only Mutu upfront. That’s fine as far as the lone striker goes, but you have to have at least two wingers close to him and coming up with him in attack all the time. That’s how you can score against the Dutch on the counter. Looking forward to Huntelaar starting. Rat, get ready for a tough game - you are going to have to excel.

CH12 predicted that France and Holland go through. It will be interesting to see if that happens. I don’t think so, as I believe Italy will beat France.

I have said Hup Oranje, Allez Francaise, Forza Italia. It’s only fair to say Hai România…

Nello stesso stadio in cui distrusse i campioni del mondo 4 giorni prima, l’Olanda fa a pezzi anche i vice-campioni con una prestazione assurda. Olandesi subito in vantaggio con Kuyt, marcato malissimo da Malouda, raddoppiano poi con Van Persie che segna facile dopo un’incursione pazzesca di Robben. Francesi spreconi con Henry che si mangia un gol facilissimo (molto simile a quello sbagliato da Toni contro l’Olanda) e segna il momentaneo 2 a 1, che viene però annullato immediatamente da Robben che segna un gol da cineteca. La Francia sbanda e Snejider affonda i transalpini con un destro da fuori area da manuale del calcio.

La Francia non convince. Ribery scorazza qua e là e cerca di illuminare la manovra francese, troppo lenta però. Henry si mangia un gol gigantesco sull’1 a 0 e non convince neanche lui. Di Govou l’unico spunto decente nel primo tempo, parato bene da Van Der Sar. Disastrosa la difesa, Thuram e Gallas (centrali) si fanno abbindolare dagli esterni dell’Olanda nel 2 a 0 e nel 3 a 1, Sagnol ed Evra (esterni) vanno meglio, ma non coprono bene. Il neo-entrato Gomis non sembra il gran fenomeno che ci dicevano prima dell’Europeo, mentre Benzema guarda malinconico la partita dalla panchina. Coupet ci mette del suo, non parando nel suo palo il tiro del 3 a 1, non allungando un pò di più la mano nel tiro di Van Persie del 2 a 0, facendosi trovare fuori dai pali per il 4 a 1.

Quanti rimpianti per Domenech, che in un sol colpo rimpiange di non aver portato con sè Mexes e Trezeguet, e di aver messo titolare un disastroso Coupet con l’ottimo Frey in panchina. L’Olanda di Van Basten bella ma anche fortunata, quando la luna gira per il giusto verso allora su 6 tiri in porta fai 4 gol, ma sarà così anche con la Romania?

Van Basten - get your team to counter attack with more speed.  You have to get one more soon or it’s going to be tough at the end.  France will come forward increasingly.  Bring on Van Persie or Robben.

Manchester United defender, Patrice Evra has been rewarded with a new four-year contract after cementing the left-back slot at Old Trafford.The France full-back, who did not feature in his country’s disappointing goalless draw with Romania at Euro 2008 on Monday, has proved to be an astute signing by Sir Alex Ferguson.

And although his present deal still had another year to run, Ferguson has now tied the former Monaco man to Old Trafford until 2012.

Evra cost £5.5million when he joined the Red Devils, but played a starring role in last season’s Premier League and Champions League double, making 48 starts in all competitions.

Evra, who celebrated his 27th birthday last month, overcame a difficult first six months at United to become one of the best left-backs in Europe.

A member of back-to-back Premier League title squads, the Senegal-born star was part of the Red Devils side which defeated Chelsea in the Champions League final.

“The last two-and-a-half seasons have been the start of a dream for me,” he said. “It is a pleasure and an honour to be part of this fantastic side and to be coached by Sir Alex Ferguson and his staff.

“Manchester United is more than a club, it is a family I am proud to be a part of and that is why it has always been a first choice for me.

“I declared when arrived that I was coming here not just to play but to win and United is the ideal place to realise such a dream.

“It is a privilege to play in front of our fantastic fans and I am sure that the success we have earned in the last two seasons confirms the history of this club and will be the start of something even more special.”

With a number of key figures - including defenders Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown and Nemanja Vidic - signing contracts recently, Evra’s new deal means Ferguson has secured the services of his established back four for the foreseeable future, certainly beyond the two years he expects to remain.

Ferguson is already looking ahead to a busy season, which includes the European Super Cup and World Club Championship, as well as the defence of United’s two major honours - and views Evra as an integral part of those plans.

“Patrice has been a key part of the club’s success in the last two seasons,” said the United boss. “He has developed into one of the best full-backs in world football and his infectious personality has helped to build the incredible team spirit that exists at Old Trafford.”

Domenech is a bad coach whose arrogance grew following a surprise final showing at the 2006 World Cup.  That was due to Zidane’s brilliance and not the coach’s decisions.  He knew Romania would set up a defensive shop.  So play Benzema up front along with Anelka.  He had him play on the wing ortoo deep for too long.  Also, bring in Nasri sooner and have Sagnol and Abidal come up the wings more often on overlaps.  I would probably play Evra over Abidal.  Anyway, he’s paid the price for a cautious set of tactics.  The only person who showed any urgency was Ribery.  The grass looked like it was too long as the ball didn’t seem to be rolling easily - another issue that hindered France… along with Romania’s eight behind the ball.  Benzema and Anelka should have scored at least one of the chances they had - especially Benzema with the sidefoot.  If you sidefoot, you need to put it towards one of the corners, not straight down the middle at the keeper.  Not looking good for France.

I know this is really boring if you don’t like football or don’t even know who this team is but I am so happy that Manchester United won the Champions League (10 days after winning the Premiership).   I will admit I cried.  I haven’t cried at a game we have won since the last time we won it. 

Can I just say as well that it was VERY close.  I have never supported a team that has won on penalties before, so I was not optimistic.  I do feel bad for John Terry who is the only Chelsea player I actually think is OK.  He fell over.  This still made me chortle though (thanks Si! sorry JT).

I am completely in love with all our players today.

El intercambio de golpes continuó, en su versión más descarnada, en la segunda mitad. Sir Winston Churchill dijo en cierta ocasión que “el error de nuestra época consiste en que los hombres no quieren ser útiles, sino ser importantes”. Por ahí empezó el camino a la perdición del United. La máquina de Ferguson funcionó como un reloj suizo a lo largo del primer tiempo por una simple razón: sus grandes talentos giraban en torno a una idea, el bien común del grupo. En los segundos cuarenta y cinco minutos, esa ecuación se invirtió, y el Manchester aparcó su solidaridad habitual para dar rienda suelta a un excesivo protagonismo para estrellas que quisieron brillar más de la cuenta. Cristiano Ronaldo, Hargreaves y Rooney decidieron, por alguna ignota razón, hacer la guerra por su cuenta. Esa ansiedad por ganar, por hacerlo todo deprisa y bien, por desequilibrar, fue el principio del fin con el paso de los minutos. El Manchester confundió talento con anarquía, regate con desmarque, riesgo con temeridad, y acabó pagando los pequeños (grandes) detalles. Porque enfrente tenía un muro, el Chelsea. Y el muro, poco a poco, comenzó a hacerse cada minuto más y más grande. 

Otro ilustre, Rudyard Kipling, sostenía que ‘la fuerza de la manada está en el lobo y la del lobo, en la manada’. El Chelsea aplicó la segunda parte del aforismo de Kipling, y lo hizo a rajatabla. Fue una manada, una jauría hambrienta, la más viva expresión de la sinergia de grupo. Un bloque marmóreo, granítico, solvente, eficaz, guerrillero y comprometido. Fuenteovejuna con camiseta azul. Emergió el poderío del quebrantahuesos Essien, apareció la escoba del inagotable Makelele, y el alemán Ballack tuvo arrestos para venirse arriba y crear múltiples problemas en la línea de flotación del Manchester. En esos minutos, ocurrió lo inesperado. El Chelsea se olvidó de su estilo, se echó al monte y fue a por el partido. Hubo chance para Joe Cole, una ocasión de oro para Ballack, otra para Essien y un par de ellas para Lampard. Con el United casi fuera de combate, Drogba se sacó un pepinazo que se estampó contra la madera de Van der Sar, ya batido. Para sorpresa del personal, el Chelsea había barrido al United en la segunda parte pero, como tampoco encontró premio a su esfuerzo, hubo que recurrir a la prórroga. El Manchester, exhausto y en cierta inferioridad, la firmó con gusto. No era para menos, porque el Chelsea lo había tenido contra las cuerdas.

En el extra-time, no hacía falta ser adivino para presagiarlo, Grant ordenó al Chelsea que no levantara el pie del acelerador. Con Kalou en el campo y con Cole empujando entre líneas, los blues volvieron a tener la Copa de Europa en sus pies, pero Lampard, sólo en el área pequeña, estrelló su remate contra el travesaño del United, que se desangraba sin la presencia de Scholes. A Ferguson no le llegaba la camisa al cuello, y Grant volvía a mover ficha sacando a Anelka. Entonces, cuando el United parecía al borde del abismo, irrumpió Evra como un cohete, rompió la cintura de cuatro defensas del Chelsea y dio un pase de la muerte en bandeja de plata para Giggs, que chutó a puerta vacía con Cech ya batido. En el fragor de la batalla, y a cinco minutos para los posibles penaltis, se montó una tángana salvaje entre Tévez y medio equipo del Chelsea, que le recriminó su actitud. Al calor del lío, Drogba dio un bofetón a Vidic y el árbitro, cerca de la jugada, mandó a la calle al marfileño. Llovía como si nos costara en Moscú y la tensión se podía cortar con un cuchillo. En mitad de la locura colectiva, entre la intensa cortina de lluvia que seguía azotando a unos y otros, Chelsea y Manchester dieron con sus huesos en la lotería de la tanda de penaltis. Era el final más angustioso posible para la final más épica posible.

Y allí, en los once metros de la vida y la muerte, el fútbol mezcló los caprichos de sus dioses, de su destino, de sus inescrutables designios, y escogió un vencedor. Cristiano Ronaldo (¿el mejor del mundo o el mundo del mejor?) disparó y el mundo se derrumbó a sus pies. Su United se iba a pique por su culpa. Fue entonces cuando John Terry, el mejor defensa central del mundo y el capitán más capitán de los capitanes, ejerció su responsabilidad. Se cargó el mundo a la espalda, cogió carrerilla y…se escurrió. Su disparo tocó la madera y salió fuera. El United, por algún capricho del destino, se llevó la Copa de Europa. Cincuenta años después, los Busby Babes sonríen colgados de alguna nube en el cielo. El alma de Duncan Edwards debe haber alcanzado la complacencia esta noche, al conocer que el equipo de su vida, el Manchester United, se ha proclamado Campeón de Europa para honrar su memoria y la de sus prometedores compañeros que encontraron la muerte en aquel maldito accidente aéreo de Munich en 1958.  

El día en que la humanidad supo que Beyoncé resulta demasiado famosa para Dios, el reloj del planeta se detuvo en Moscú. Sobre el césped del Luzhniki, el Manchester United se coronaba Rey de Europa en la final más intensa y agónica de los últimos años. Después, cuando le televisión se fijó en el rostro desencajado de John Terry, comprobamos que nadie puede saber qué es la tristeza si no ha perdido jamás un partido de fútbol. Las lágrimas de Terry, un hombre de dos metros y un corazón de una tonelada, estremecieron el cemento del Luzhniki. De fondo, entre la lluvia torrencial moscovita, el Manchester alzaba al cielo la orejuda. Esta noche, en Moscú, debieron entregarse dos Copas de Europa. Hubo vencedores, pero no vencidos. Grande y cruel, el fútbol, en estado puro, se dio cita en Moscú. Nadie podrá olvidar esta final. Absolutamente nadie. Quizá Beyoncé es demasiado famosa para Dios, no sé, pero no cabe duda de que, si Dios existe, esta noche disfrutó con la gesta que Manchester y Chelsea le regalaron a la humanidad.

Patrice Evra bertekad membawa MU juara Liga Champions 2007-08.

MANCHESTER, SELASA - Defender Manchester United (MU), Patrice Evra mengatakan, timnya tak akan memberi kesempatan kepada Chelsea untuk melakukan balas dendam di final Liga Champions.

Setelah gagal menjuarai Premier League, Chelsea memang menyatakan akan membalas kegagalan itu dengan memenangkan Liga Champions. Final yang akan digelar di Stadion Luzhniki, Moskwa (Rusia), 21 Mei itu akan mempertemukan Chelsea dengan MU.

“Chelsea gagal juara Premeir League dan mereka tak ingin mengakhiri musim ini tanpa gelar. Mereka juga tak ingin membiarkan kami menjuarai Liga Champions. Tapi, kami tak akan memberi mereka sedikit pun peluang untuk mengalahkan kami di final Liga Champions,” kata Evra.

Menurutnya, setelah juara Premier League, para pemain MU hanya sebentar melakukan perayaan kemenangan. Setelah itu, seluruh pemain langsung fokus menghadapi final Liga Champions. Ini akan sangat membantu.

“Sukses itu memberi kami tambahan energi dan kepercayaan diri. Pengaruhnya sangat besar. Memang, kami tak terlalu larut dalam kegembiraan, sebab masih ada tugas besar yang menanti. Kami sudah memikirkan partai final Liga Champions tersebut dan jika bisa jaura, itu akan memberi kepuasan tiada tara,” jelas Evra.

Evra tahu betul betapa sakitnya kalah di final Liga Champions. Dia pernah mengalaminya saat masih membela AS Monaco. Di final 2003-04, timnya dikalahkan FC Porto. Ini akan menjadi final Liga Champions ekdua baginya dan dia tak ingin gagal lagi.

Rasa sakit gagal ebrsama Monaco tersebut akan memberinya kekuatan dan motivasi besar untuk menebusnya. Maka, dia benar-benar sangat menanti pertandingan itu dan siap memberikan yang terbaik buat MU.

“Ini akan menajdi pengalaman keduaku tampil di final Liga Champions. Aku tak ingin berjalan meninggalkan lapangan, hanya melewati trofi Liga Champions, tanpa mengangkatnya. Itu sangat menyakitkan seperti yang kualami bersama Monaco pada 2004,” terangnya.

“AKu masih merasakan sakitnya kegagalan itu. Itu pula yang aku katakan ketika melakukan wawancara pertama setelah menandatangani kontrak dengan Manhcester United. Aku bersedia pindah ke MU untuk menjuarai Liga Champions, bukan sekadar bermain di kompetisi terelite itu,” tegasnya. (SCN/HPR)

En este post, ya hablé de las ventajas que tenían los anticonceptivos de pocas tomas frente a los de toma diaria, en cuanto a su efectividad como anticonceptivo, pero la pregunta que se tiene que hacer cada uno, o hacérle a su ginecólogo o ginecóloga, es si merece la pena asumir ese riesgo.

12:45 Saturday the 26^th of April, 2008. Manchester United, Chelsea, one match that once over, would have a massive implication on where the title would end up at the end of the season. So naturally all eyes were on the match itself, and quite right, but what about after the match was ended? Surely all the headlines would focus on the winner and the battle between two of the biggest teams in the Premier League, right? 

Wrong. Amazingly, Chelsea were awarded a late penalty. Yes, a late goal against Manchester United. For a minute I thought it was only United who scored late goals!

This sparked outrage with the United players who aren’t used to conceding late goals (especially penalty’s) and this sparked a mass shoving match, highlighted by England centre backs John Terry and Rio Ferdinand at each others throats.

Now, forgive me if I sound pro-Chelsea, I’m not, honestly. It just seems to me that Chelsea deserved to win the match, United only equalised after a catastrophic mistake by Ricardo Carvalho allowed Wayne Rooney an easy one-on-one. The came the game’s talking point. As the final whistle was looming, the ball was whipped in to the United box and Michael Carrick was adjudged to have handled the ball. It was questionable, but these things happen in big games, just get over it. Ballack slotted home the penalty and Chelsea were 3 points better off. Cue angry Alex Ferguson and angry United players. So the stroppy-ness of the United players was bad enough, but what happened after the game was even worse.

What Happened?

Well, first of all, in an act of frustration, Rio Ferdinand lashed out by kicking a wall and in turn, caught a female steward.

Kicked a wall? Oh the age old stress combater, kicking a wall. Ridiculous. Why would you kick such a hard object? One thing that it is a sign of frustration and passion from Ferdinand, which is good to see, but surely if you’re about to kick a wall, you don’t choose the part which has a steward leaning on it! However, Rio has been quick to apologise and send the steward a bunch of flowers, the least he can do.

Second of all, a mass brawl broke out between the Manchester United and Chelsea ground staff.

Now I can’t really give an opinion on this because reports still vary as to what actually happened. According to CCTV footage from Stamford Bridge, a scuffle involving Manchester United players (Patrice Evra, Gary Neville, Ji-Sung Park and Paul Scholes) who were warming down on the pitch and Chelsea ground staff. Apparently the groundstaff angered the players by asking them to move off the pitch and a fight broke out with several members of the ruckus having to be restrained with Patrice Evra having to have treatment on an eye injury because of the brawl.    

Some newspapers are reporting that the brawl was sparked by racist comments made towards some of the Manchester United players. The Mirror said:

“United insiders claimed the extraordinary brawl had been sparked by a racist taunt aimed at Evra. But Chelsea got wind of the racism allegations and, after a telephone summit between chief executives Peter Kenyon and his opposite number David Gill, United were forced to retract the claim. Kenyon called Gill the moment he heard of the allegations and demanded his former club issue an immediate retraction.”

What ever happened it seems something wasn’t right, or else a brawl simply wouldn’t have broken out. The complaints of Ferguson and the behaviour of Ferdinand is laughable and really have no place in the game. I think what United simply have to realise is that they have been effectively caught up by a team who have played average football all year. Although they may not like it, it’s something they are going to have to live with. Rather than cry about a game that they narrowly lost, why not concentrate on the games coming up and focus on winning the title, rather than cursing their bad luck.

Just a suggestion.

Jugar bien a fútbol en Old Trafford es una obligación. El Barcelona lo hizo. Lo hizo a pesar de que Scholes le puso la soga en el cuello nada más empezar el baile, y a pesar de que eso pesó una tonelada. Aunque el principal lastre azulgrana llegó en su preocupante y galopante falta de profundidad, de gol, de remate, de punch. De instinto asesino.  El Barça cayó con las botas puestas abrazado a un gigantesco Deco, a un heróico Abidal y a todos sus demonios interiores y viejos defectos. Pero cayó, y eso será lo que quedará en la historia. Eso sí, el partido valiente y comprometido del Barça no esconde sus miserias del día a día. El Barcelona ahora afronta, sin ningún clavo ardiendo al que agarrarse, dos años sin títulos. A Rijkaard le huele el culo a pólvora, y con razón. A Ronaldinho ya le han puesto precio. Y Etoo, esta noche, se lo ha puesto él sólo. Lejos de pretender demonizar o crucificar a unos y otros, algo sí parece claro. En Old Trafford se acabó un ciclo. Barça: This is the End.

 El Barça jugó con entereza, con el pie duro cuando tocaba y con fino tiralíneas cuando fue menester. Tuvo la pelota, quiso ser protagonista y basculó como en sus buenos tiempos. Emergió Deco - enorme el portugués en derroche, presencia y liderazgo-, hiló fino Iniesta y Messi fue un puñal en banda. Suficientes argumentos para descoser a otro rival de menor enjundia, que no al Manchester. Los ingleses, desposeídos de la pelota, esperaron al Barça al acecho, deseosos de soltar amarras con espacio y metros para el contragolpe. En pleno intercambio de golpes, y cuando el Barça más se lo creía, apareció el pelirrojo y sempiterno Scholes. El latido del United (copyright Diego Torres, El País) sacó la escoba para barrer un balón suelto en el área, la especialidad de la casa, y se sacó un misil tierra-aire que se coló como una exhalación por la escuadra de Valdés. Fue un mazazo, pero no un tiro en la sien para el Barça. Los de Rijkaard, después de cinco minutos de confusión, volvieron a la faena cuando superaron el desconcierto. Volvieron a asumir, a pedir la pelota, a tratar bien al balón y a abrir el juego por los extremos. Con Deco al mando, el Barça volvió a entrar en el cuerpo a cuerpo para hundir el cuchillo en la zaga inglesa, pero no tuvo éxito en su misión. Y no tuvo premio por dos simples razones: una, su falta de punch arriba - donde Etoo peleaba pero no chutaba-, y dos, por la persistente insistencia de Messi en pretender marcar el mejor gol de todos los tiempos. Por su parte, el Manchester volvió a enseñar sus miserias, ofreció su versión más italiana y enterró esas cualidades eléctricas que le pintaban como un equipo terrorífico. A cambio, tuvo tres ocasiones de gol clarísimas. Scholes acertó y el Barça, no. 

Bill Kenwright, el dueño del Everton, definió a Wayne Rooney como ‘una combinación de John Wayne y Mickey Rooney. Una mezcla del chico que monta sobre su fiel caballo y salva al pueblo. O como un artista que lo canta y lo baila todo’. Pero sin el chico que montaba fiel su caballo y salva al pueblo, sin el artista que canta y baila todo, el Manchester fue menos Manchester que nunca. En mitad de un escenario histórico, en una de esas noches donde el fútbol se viste de leyenda, a los grandes equipos se les recuerda por grande héroes. Y al Manchester, un buen equipo, le faltó su vertiente más demoledora, Wayne Rooney.  Sin el diablo del suburbio de Croxteth, sin Tyson Rooney en el campo, el United no pasó de poner la intención y el Barça respiró aliviado. En su lugar, Ferguson tiró de manual y dejó los deberes para Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani y Tévez. El único que dio la talla fue ‘El Apache’, un pedazo de futbolista, que se fajó entre líneas y que fue una amenaza. De Nani no hubo noticias. De Cristiano Ronaldo, tampoco. Sólo agrandó su leyenda negra que le cataloga como un jugador que se arruga y se difumina en los partidos grandes. Quizá se quedó, mentalmente, en el penalti fallado del Camp Nou. 

El segundo acto siguió la misma tónica. El United apostó por la trinchera y el Barça, por la pelota. Eso sí, en la segunda mitad el Barça perdió mucha chispa, no tuvo la misma entereza y acabó desangrándose en lo físico a cámara lenta. Tuvo la pelota en un monólogo, por momentos, impresionante. Pero anduvo romo en ataque, falto de profundidad, nulo en remate. Un lastre demasiado pesado para superarlo y entrar en una final de Copa de Europa. Deco tiró del equipo hecho un titán, Abidal fue un gigante en defensa y ataque, y Messi se peleó con el mundo. En el otro lado de la ventanilla aparecieron Etoo - desfondado y desnortado-, Yaya Touré - ¿por qué juega de titular un tipo dolido, lento e infiltrado hasta de ansiolíticos?- y Andrés Iniesta, escorado a la izquierda por orden y capricho de Rijkaard. Con más corazón que cabeza, y con más posesión que pegada, el Barça vio cómo la final de Moscú se le escapaba poco a poco, como el mercurio resbala por un termómetro. Enfrente tuvo a un poderoso equipo con una actitud cobarde y decepcionante, pero que tuvo toda la puntería que le faltó al Barcelona. Fue una agonía lenta y dolorosa.  Un final triste, cruel y quizá injusto para un Barça que murió con las botas puestas. 

Pero el partido valiente y comprometido del Barça no esconde sus miserias del día a día. El Barcelona ahora afronta, sin ningún clavo ardiendo al que agarrarse, a dos años sin títulos. A Rijkaard le huele el culo a pólvora, y con razón. A Ronaldinho ya le han puesto precio. Y Etoo, esta noche, se lo ha puesto él sólo.
