Jordan Brand celebrated Team Jordan athlete Derek Jeter last night in NY at Marquee. A few familiar faces showed up for the festivities such as Gabrielle Union, Wanya Morris (of Boyz II Men), Julissa Bermudez and her hot ass, Mya who's career is still in need of the shock paddles (anybody have some?), ladies favorite Idris Elba, Terrence J and his sheisty ass (for possibly getting Rocsi fired), Lloyd, Kevin Liles, actor Ethan Hawke, actor Darrin Henson, and of course the greatest ball player of all time himself Jordan.

The movie follows a story of Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Hank (Ethan Hawke) and the big mess they are in after their operation to rob their parents' jewelry shop fell apart. The family's a mess. Most of the film show flashbacks from, during and after the robbery from different viewpoints. It's interesting enough to keep you watching until the end.

There's just something about Hoffman that makes me hate him so much. The way he wears his arrogance tells me that there is possibly nothing he can do that will make me want him as a friend. I just hate him and I suppose that's good for him. I am not referring to this movie only. It's just the way he looks -- he fits the bad guy quite perfectly.

It is crazy to see the multitude of headlines regarding Nannies and husbands hooking up or some accused of hooking up I should say. If worrying that the Nanny is treating the kids well isn’t enough? Now you have to worry about your man too! There is quite a list of men that have done the deed with Nanny…Robin Williams, Jude Law, Michael Jackson,  David Beckham, and the list goes on.

The latest headline tells us Ethan Hawke is planning to marry his pregnant (with his child) former Nanny who cared for his children with Uma Thurman, his now ex-wife. That is definitely a juicy scoop but shouldn’t we, “real” women start worrying if these glamorous, movie star women are cheated on with the Nannies? I wouldn’t let it keep me up at night but I would give it a second thought. 

This is just one more brick in the wall reminding us to use extra caution when selecting someone to live in your home and care for your children. You really need to not only know this person’s entire history but also trust them and get a good read of their personality. Pieno di soldi, viziato, arrogante e troppo troppo precisino e presuntuoso, privo di qualunque senso pratico e di ogni capacità di adattamento, romantico fuori luogo e banale, tutto cioccolatini e fiori senza un minimo di contenuto o di spirito critico. Ma chi l’ha detto che le donne vogliono il principe azzurro?! Certo, non posso parlare per quelle che hanno fatto di Sex and the City uno stile di vita (o che avrebbero voluto che lo divenisse), ma sicuramente il fascino dei soldi non è una cosa che mi colpisce o che da sola può rendere un uomo interessante ai miei occhi.

Il principe azzurro poi non è nemmeno così bello: di mezza età, brizzolato... e basta con questa storia che il brizzolato è sexy che detta da ragazze di 20 anni fa venire i brividi (unica eccezione ammissibile: George Clooney!). Certo, il principe di Cenerentola era giovane e bello, ma il personaggio, a mio avviso, non è stato approfondito abbastanza per capire quanto in realtà fosse anche stupido. Il finto belloccio ben vestito e curato fino alla nausea, senza un capello fuori posto e senza più un pelo (ma come cavolo fanno?!), con le camice superstirate e le magliette rosa aderenti, abbronzato anche a dicembre (e che il sole lo prende al mare non ci crede più nessuno), palestrato, che dice “a me la politica non interessa” quando gli chiedono “cosa pensi della guerra?”, non può realmente piacere alle donne, a NESSUNA!!! E sarebbe giusto, per evitare disastrose emulazioni, che le donne lo ammettessero una volta per tutte. E’ solo l’illusione che questo fantomatico principe sia pieno di soldi che può portare alcune ad esprimere timidi giudizi positivi. L’illusione che un uomo con i soldi possa offrire una vita migliore. Magari lo può fare, a livello pratico, per il resto però credo che poi le corna con un uomo vero diventino quasi indispensabili!

Bisogna sfatare anche l’altro mito che per conquistare le donne bisogna trattarle male. Alle donne NON piacciono gli stronzi (a parte quelle con una spiccata propensione al masochismo o al martirio) e la maggior parte delle volte li mandano molto velocemente a fanculo! Forse qualcuno si stupirà ma esistono le vie di mezzo e sopratutto esiste l’unicità di ogni singola persona, diversa (grazie a dio) da qualunque altra. Basterebbe che gli uomini fossero più se stessi con le donne, nell’esprimere le emozioni, nell’ammettere quando queste non corrispondono a sentimenti e soprattutto ci vorrebbe molta più sincerità in ambito sessuale perchè, sembra strano, ma anche le donne hanno gli ormoni e certi discorsi non sono poi così lontani dai nostri fantastici mondi di purezza e maternità.

E’ inutile cercare di rispondere alle nostre idealizzazioni che non vorremmo mai si realizzassero! Ci piace pensare di essere al centro del mondo per un uomo, ma in realtà non è questo che vogliamo perchè l'uomo che ci conquista è quello che ha la sua vita e tante cose da raccontare, quello a cui si può dare solo quel qualcosa in più di cui fino a quel momento non riusciva nemmeno a sentire la mancanza e di cui però ora non può più fare a meno. Se appena incontrate diventassimo subito le regine della vita di qualcuno significherebbe che quella vita fino a quel momento è stata vuota e che non ha molto da dire.

Poi come si fa a sapere cosa vogliamo se non conosciamo tutta la molteplicità degli esseri umani? Tutti gli aspetti che ci piacciono magari messi insieme in una persona possono renderla molto lontana da un principe. Oppure potremmo incontrare qualcuno molto meglio di come lo avevamo sognato. La perfezione non è eccitante. Essere salvate può colpirci una volta, quando un nuovo incontro può davvero significare una svolta (SIMBOLICA) per la nostra vita, ma sono altre le cose di cui abbiamo bisogno ogni giorno, cose che questi principi mezze calze non sanno darci.

Non sanno farci sognare i principi attualmente in circolazione.

Preatty Woman non è una favola moderna e Richard Gere (Edward Lewis) è uno stronzo. Va a puttane e le sfrutta pure per fare bella figura e poi sembra generoso perchè strapieno di soldi le compra qualche vestito e la porta all’opera? Oppure sembra buono perchè è così magnanimo da non rovinare l’azienda di un uomo anziano per quell’unica volta nella sua vita? Dove sono i lati positivi di questo personaggio triste e maschilista? Questi eroi, fintamente attuali, sono inventati dagli uomini che credono di sapere quello che le donne vogliono e sono talmente presuntuosi da pensare di sapere quello che le donne sognano addirittura. E invece basterebbe solo ascoltarci.

L’ideale più romantico in assoluto è quello di Romeo ma questo personaggio è molto di più di quel giovane imbambolato davanti ad un balcone che dice frasi improbabili alla ragazza di cui si è innamorato. Romeo è vivo, è pazzo d’amore, è tenero ed è terribilmente imperfetto. Non è un principe azzurro anche se, ahimè, è ricco (ma visto che è ricca pure lei in questo caso la condizione si annulla): va in giro a fare casino con gli amici, si imbuca alle feste dove non è invitato e non corteggia Giulietta come chiunque altro farebbe, evitando di toccarla con il pretesto del “rispetto”. Lui la travolge con la sua umanità, le prende la mano, la sente, la bacia. E non è perfetto perchè è una testa calda e fa un sacco di casini. E non salva Giulietta. E' lei che salva lui. Anche se salvarsi, nel senso di scoprire e vivere l’amore, è una cosa che li porta a morire. Tutti avrebbero potuto innamorarsi di Giulietta, ma Giulietta può amare solo Romeo.

E i nostri Romeo invece, che si credono grandi principi, sono solo dei pallide imitazioni dell’originale.

Io amo le persone vere, non costruite, quelle imperfette e umane, con cui ti puoi capire, con cui puoi condividere, con cui puoi piangere, ridere, soffrire e toccare il paradiso.

ESEMPI DI PRINCIPI IMPERFETTI

- Ethan Hawke: in Dall’alba al tramonto è un ragazzo che sa parlare di sé senza essere egocentrico e megalomane, dolce, bellissimo, un po’ fragile e innamorato; e in Giovani Carini e Disoccupati perchè è incasinato, pessimista, cinico, intelligente.

- Robert Downie Jr.: Larry di Ally McBeal perchè fa ridere, sa cantare e suonare il piano, perchè ha paura, perchè sa far sentire speciale la persona che ha accanto.

- Ewan McGregor: (che amo molto spesso) in Big Fish, perchè sa raccontare storie e sa inventarle per le persone che ama.

- Jude Low: (sempre adorabile a dire la verità) in L’amore non va in vacanza perchè è la sorpresa più bella che ci si può aspettare quando ti sembra che vada tutto male.

- Johnny Whitworth: A. J. di Empire Records perchè è ingenuo, dolce, introverso.

- Zach Braff: in La mia vita a Garden State perchè deve essere salvato e può riuscire a far star bene qualcuno quasi inconsapevolmente.

- Leonard Whiting: in Romeo e Giulietta. Ve lo devo anche spiegare perchè?

Pe scurt: Filmul surprinde un semestru din viata unor baieti din prestigiosul liceu Weldon Academy unde mai presus de toate domnesc regulile si conformismul unor metode care dau roade de multe generatii. As putea spune ca este o poveste a pubertatii, a celui mai important moment din viata unui om, acela cand deciziile luate ii formeaza caracterul.

Filmul este o afirmatie a non-conformismului si a gandirii libere manifestate prin caracterul profesorului Keating a carui deviza "Carpe Diem" trezeste spiritul in fiecare dintre elevi. Keating nu trebuie vazut ca o razvratire impotriva regulilor, ci ca un reprezentant al noii generatii.

Intr-adevar firul epic nu prezinta intr-un mod pur fantezist ideea de a-ti trai viata in sensul ca toti ar trebui sa luam decizii numai cu sufletul si deloc gandite, ci reuseste sa surprinda cele 2 extreme. Mie mi-a indus existenta unui echilibru intre curajul de a aplica idei noi si regulile existente (dar poate asa sunt eu, un moderat).

"Oh Captain! My Captain!"

Iata mai jos una dintre scenele care m-au impresionat, o scena din finalul filmului de unde reiese ceea ce profesorul Keating a reusit sa starneasca in acesti copii (oricum trebuie sa vedeti tot filmul pentru a putea intelege total semnificatia scenei).

Probabil este primul rol ce poate fi considerat o rampa de lansare pentru Robin Williams, el fiind rasplatit pe merit cu o nominalizare la Oscar pentru cel mai bun actor in rol principal (va lua Oscarul pentru un alt rol magistral in Good Will Hunting 9 ani mai tarziu). Intotdeauna am trait cu senzatia ca lui Wiliiams i se potrivesc roluri ce imbina tragicul si comicul (Mrs Doubtfire, Jack, Bicentennial Man, What Dreams May Come, Good Will Hunting).

In the first movie Jesse (Ethan Hawke) is traveling to Vienna to catch a plain the next morning, and Celine (Julie Delpy) home to Paris. When the train pulls into Vienna, Jesse convinces Celine to spend the night with him in the city. The two spend the night talking and seeing the sites of Vienna. As they learn more about each other, they begin to fall for each other, but they know they have only one night, and it would be impossible to get together.

The second film picks up 8 years later, and finds Jesse in Paris. He is on a tour promoting his book, a novelized version of his night with Celine. She comes to one of his appearances, and they see each other for the first time in years. Jesse has little more than an hour before he must be at the airport, so the two wander the streets of Paris and talk of what might have been.

These are two movies that are absolutely made by their dialogue. Aside form the two stars, there are only a handful of people that speak in either movies, and their dialogue is minimal. The writing is excellent, and there is great chemistry between Hake and Delpy that really brings the script to life. Both of these films, the second in particular are reminiscent of Rope by Alfred Hitchcock: long takes, strong dialogue, and a focus on characters in a singular way.

The characters are warm and believable and strangely captivating, so much so that eight years later, the original director and the two stars came together and co-wrote the script for Before Sunset.

Director Richard Linklater created two wonderful works of art with these films. He used two beautiful cities as backdrops against which he told a great story. There is a magic and a charm in these films that is hard to describe and even more difficult to create. I highly recommend watching them at least once.

The poster was lovely, and it was the one I kept and hung on my wall until we moved to the US. But it was M-rated, so I didn't see it. Not til a few years later, when I babysat for these girls down the road called Claire and Emily. Their names aren't important. Their parents paid better than anyone else in the neightbourhood: $5 per hour. That meant a WHOLE Dave Matthews Band CD after just one night of babysitting. Trust me, it does NOT get better than that.

Anyway, one night, while I was babysitting, Before Sunrise was on TNT. I fell in love with it. It was just a beautiful film.

Basically, the whole film is two people talking. It's lovely, though, and it spurred my love of harpsichord and Bach.

Nine years later, they made a sequel.  Before Sunset.  The characters meet again.

Oh, I could rave for hours, but the moral of the story is WATCH THESE FILMS.  They are truly worth the effort.

Oh, and in a moment of symmetry, my younger brother bought a Before Sunset movie poster from Blockbuster and gave it to me.  It now hangs on the wall in my study.  It puts me in mind of one of Celine's lines from the movie:

"It's funny, I read a journal of mine from '83, the other day. And what really surprised me, was that I was feeling with life, the same way am now. I was much hopeful and naive, but the core, and the way I was feeling things, is exactly the same! It made me realize I haven't changed much at all. "

Perhaps the most disappointing element I have found is the helplessness of man brought about by his total dependency on scientific advancements, which leaves little or no hope for a more humane society in a world no longer ruled by the laws of nature but one that is ruled by the unyielding man-made laws of science.

Recently, I saw the movie “Gattaca”, starring Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and Uma Thurman,  which not only shocked me by ( beyond anything that I have ever read or seen on the silver screen relating to science fiction) but also showed how the will of one man defeats an authoritarian and discriminatory society to follow a dream. It is the awesome story of how one man’s self-belief and determination  to reach for the stars, not only survives inspite of years of  negative social conditioning, but succeeds in the face of all odds.

Sometime in the future, discrimination is no longer based on  the colour of your skin, your nationality, religion or socio-economic status. The quest for excellence and the required perfection has driven man to perfect “discrimination” itself, by categorizing all humans into “perfect” and “imperfect” (or “invalids” as they are called in Gattaca), based on their very fundamentals of existence- their DNA.

The movie is autobiographical in form and is narrated by the protagonist, Damien* (played by the outstanding Ethan Hawke). The first sentence uttered by Damien – “ The exact time of my death was determined even before I was born”, pretty much sets the mood of the next one and a half hours of the narrative.

Damien’s future is destined to be doomed when he is conceived in a moment of love and passion- natural conception being more of an exception that the norm in an age where doctors design babies having “perfect” DNA,  “to give them a better chance in the world”. At the time of his birth, he is declared to be a myopic, with a frail body and a weaker heart, having a very high probability of sudden, fatal  heart-attack before he turns 22. His disheartened parents, realizing their folly, opt for a genetically designed second son. Right from his early years, the bespectacled, buck-toothed, puny, “invalid” Damien is sidelined by society as well as his parents who give wings to the wishes and dreams of  the taller, handsome, stronger, perfect Wiliam* - his younger brother.

The celestial bodies of the solar system attract the young Damien’s fascination and become his refuge from the unkind world. Despite the constant discouragement from his parents that he will never be accepted as an astronaut, given his genetic and physical impediments, Damien feeds this fascination which grows into the sole purpose of his existence- the one and only goal to study and explore the stars and planets of this universe.

Unable to bear the constant prejudice and the lack of support from his family, he leaves home and ekes out a living as janitor ( one of the tasks that “invalids” are considered suitable for) for several years, all the time with his sights set firmly on making  it to Gattaca – the elitist society, where only the best and the brightest of the “perfect” lot are accepted to be the front-runners of science and space exploration programs.

Once he arrives at Gattaca, albeit as a janitor, he realizes that nothing he might ever accomplish academically will qualify him to be a part of  Gattaca, whose doors are shut for an “invalid”. To achieve his dream, Damien takes on the identity of  Robby* ( played by the brilliant Jude Law), who is famed to be one of the most perfect individuals of the times.

How Damien becomes an imposter in Gattaca, where he meets and falls in love with the character played by unnerving Uma Thurman, how he  succeeds in getting selected for one of the most prestigious space explorations programs ever, and how his true identity of being an “invalid”, is almost revealed, not once but several times, by William (who grows up to become a detective), and how Damien succeeds in reaching for the stars, where he believes he truly belongs, forms the crux of this incredible story.

This is possibly one of the best movies of Ethan Hawke. The pain, the grit, the desperation and the lingering fear of getting exposed as an imposter  are brought out beautifully yet subtly by Ethan Hawke. Both Uma Thurman and Jude Law have given stellar performances. Jude Law has done full justice to the complex character which is the perfect anti-thesis of Damien. Jude’s portrayal of  proud and drunk Robby* who is suffering from an illness of his own- the “obsession for perfection” , couldn’t have been bettered by any other actor.

Although the movie is a sci-fi flick, the sepia-tinted frames and the absence of colour take you right back to the black and white era. There are no sci-fi gadgets showcased, but just the bare, almost sterile environment, perhaps to ensure that nothing distracts from the human element. A word of caution, this is by no means an entertaining movie. Certainly not the ideal stuff  for a Saturday evening with cold beer and friends. It will shock you, enthrall you, disturb you and force you to dwell on things. Having said that, I  recommend it as an absolute must-watch. This is a movie best seen alone, to let it sink into your mind.

Cei doi ar fi oarece veri. La rândul lor, Barack şi Hillary sunt veri şi cu Georgie Bush, căruia i s-au găsit legături de rudenie cu aceeaşi familie regală. Evidentele asemănări dintre cei doi şi regăsirea caracteristicilor comune se observă fără multă transpiraţie. Numai cârcotaşii ar putea obiecta. Şi iată ceea ce unii ar numi răutăcios sărutul lui Iuda.

M-am lămurit cum e cu încrengăturile şi acuplările. Prin analogie. A fost ca o revelaţie. Uma Thuman se va căsători cu miliardarul elveţian Arpad Busson (prenume neaoş elveţian!). Sidney Lumet is living proof that age is never a deterrent. The 83 year old master auteur has crafted what I can safely say is one of the finest genre films of the last few years; painfully intense, deeply disturbing and layered with nuances that no other film maker his age is capable of depicting.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is not an ordinary botched heist story; it ends up being something much more - a poem about men thrust into circumstances that drag them into an abyss of moral ambiguities, ethical dilemmas and disturbing questions about the nature of loyalty, love and family. Hank (Ethan Hawke) and Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) are brothers who resort to desperate measures during desperate times. The older Andy, mired in drugs and debt proposes a 'victimless crime' and convinces the younger Hank to rob a jewelery store that is insured; the only catch being that the store is owned by their parents.

The job goes wrong and the mother ends up being fatally shot. What follows is a complex analysis of seemingly simple people, people who could very well be us, people who for the life of them cannot come to terms with their actions. Andy is an egomaniac (stressed by an opening scene where he stares at himself in the mirror whilst making love to his trophy wife), Hank is the over parented younger son who can never seem to get by on his own and Charles is the father who is in a constant state of denial.

Lumet employs an overlapping time sequence and retells the story from the points of view of the various characters. I cannot seem to get over the fact that Lumet shows the vitality and sharpness of a film maker half his age. If you’ve seen his earlier films (Network, Dog Day Afternoon), you’ll know that the director has perfected the art of cinematic voyeurism, he gives you front row seats to the mayhem in the lives of ordinary individuals.

I stress ordinary because everything about every frame is ordinary, in an extraordinary way. You can hear the ambient sounds of clocks, copiers, telephones, cars and what not…all intended to give the viewer a feel of the dingy dark recesses of the human mind in spite of the seeming normalcy that surrounds the protagonists. He has taken this a step further by using high definition digital video which only accentuates the grittiness.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is a wonderfully restrained drama that proves without the shadow of a doubt the genius that is Sidney Lumet.

Actor Ethan Hawke and his new wife, Ryan Shawhughes welcomed Clementine Jane Hawke on July 18th.  Ethan met Ryan while she worked as a nanny, taking care of his two children Maya, 10 and Levon, 6 from first wife, Uma Thurman. 

The couple married in a quiet ceremony in New York City last month.
