A guitarra de Joe Satriani irá ecoar pelo Credicard Hall, dia 29 de julho, no lançamento do CD Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock.

I Just Wanna Rock, Professor Satchafunkilus, etc.

Advarsel: Kun gitarspilling i denne sangen, ingen synging.

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=102336442

Like many other great guitarists, tapping is a part of Eric Johnson’s arsenal. Yet he is o

Like many other great guitarists, tapping is a part of Eric Johnson's arsenal. Yet he is one of the few who uses this technique for tonal qualities, rather than just for raw speed. Whether he's tapping out some harmonics above the pick-ups or using this amazing koto technique, his tapping is much more melodic and orginal than most. Below I have a video of him explaining his "koto technique."

Pretty cool, huh?

Take a look at this technique. I've listed the basics of how to do it again below in case the video was a bit unclear for you.

Fret a note with your pinking hand index finger. Pick right behind your index finger with your picking hand thumb. These two steps occurs almost simultaneously. Next you can choose to bend this note be stretching the string with your fretting hand. Then you can pull off from your picking hand index finger to your fretting hand. I've tabbed out the first couple of licks he plays in the video the best I could. Try them out.

Video Lick 1:

Video Lick 2:

The 2nd one is a little complicated. Just remember that all notes are either tapped and picking with the thumb, pulled-off to, or just normally picked with the thumb. I've marked the tapped notes with a "T" and the pulled off notes with the slurs. Everything else pick with your thumb.

Quinn Gray, QB--Gray was a reliable backup for the Jacksonville Jaguars who is young and has a lot of potential.

Brandon Chillar, LB--Chillar, who has played for the St. Louis Rams since being drafted in the 4th round of the 2004 NFL draft, is a very agressive linebacker who could add some depth at linebacker and maybe even challenge Brady Poppinga for a starting job. Even if Chillar were to remain a backup, he would undoubtedly make a significant impact on special teams. If Tracy White, Green Bay's special team standout and backup linebacker, signs with Denver or Pittsburgh (both of whom are very interested in White), then Chillar will be even more attractive to Green Bay.

Mark Brunell, QB--Brunell, a former backup to Favre, could return to Green Bay and serve as a mentor and backup to the young quarterbacks on Green Bay's roster. The Packers have made contact with Brunell to discuss this possibility.

Eric Johnson, TE--Eric Johnson is a relatively young player with a good deal of upside at a position where the Packers desperately need some depth. Currently, Donald Lee and the injured Tory Humphrey are the only tight ends on Green Bay's roster. Regardless of whether the Packers sign a tight end in free agency, they will likely draft at least one tight end in April as well.

Corey Smith, DE--Corey Smith is a speedy pass rusher who could play opposite Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila in passing situations. If the Packers are willing to pay relatively big money for a player who would not be playing on the majority of defensive snaps, then Smith would be an excellent addition to the Packers defensive line.

Right now, this moment is an amazing moment. Before I even went to Japan I knew I wanted to visit the town of Obama because of Senator Obama. And it feels oh-so gratifying to know that I was the first person in the world to put the connection together. While in Japan, when I was telling people I wanted to go to the town of Obama they said, "Why do you want to go to Obama??!" or, "There is no town called Obama!" But LOOK. LOOK!! I'M SO STOKED! This came out today, Wednesday the 13th, in the Japan Times!

For Fukui city of Obama, choice of U.S. candidate is a no-brainer.

By ERIC JOHNSTON
Staff writer

OSAKA — If you're traveling through Fukui Prefecture over the coming weeks, don't be surprised if you see signs, posters or even souvenir goods that say "Obama for Obama."

News photo
This "manga" drawing of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama is the symbol of his unofficial support group in Obama, Fukui Prefecture. ILLUSTRATION COURTESY OF THE BARACK OBAMA SUPPORT GROUP

A group of 16 local residents in Obama, a city on the Sea of Japan coast, formed a support group for U.S. presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama last week in the hopes that if he eventually winds up in the White House, he'll bring not only change to American politics but, more importantly, make Obama a world famous name.

It all started a couple of years ago, after the city heard from local reporters that the senator, upon arriving in Japan, joked with Japanese customs officials that he was from Obama, Fukui Prefecture.

True or not, the story prompted Mayor Toshio Murakami to send the candidate a long thank-you letter in January 2007, explaining the history of the city and saying Obama's comments, in jest or not, "helped advertise our city."

Included in the letter was a gift of high-quality chopsticks made in Obama.

Now, however, with Obama a strong presidential candidate and drawing worldwide media attention, residents of the city have taken things a step further. Led by Seiji Fujiwara, a local hotel manager, the Barack Obama support group hopes to stage a number of Obama-related nonpolitical events to raise local awareness.

It has already drawn a likeness of the candidate as their official club symbol for use on publicity materials.

There is even talk of stamping that symbol on souvenir items like Obama bean-paste cakes, with the drawing of his face on top, although Fujiwara said the group will get his permission before attempting to delve into this particular brand of "money politics."

The reasons for the support have less to do with international politics and more to do with local tourism.

"If Barack Obama becomes president, the name Obama will become world famous, and our city will be known around the world," said Fujiwara, explaining the purpose of the group's founding.

Obama is a port town with a 1,300-year history, and was once a center of trade between ancient Nara and China and the Korean Peninsula. Today, it's known locally for its seafood and nationally for the large concentration of nuclear plants in the nearby Wakasa Bay region.

It is also the home of Yasushi Chimura and his wife Fukie, two of the five Japanese who returned to Japan in 2002, a quarter-century after they were abducted to North Korea.

Asked what his members think of Barack Obama as a candidate, Fujiwara said the group knows little of his policies but is impressed by his rhetorical skills.

"He's a gifted speaker, and his message of change sounds exciting. It will be a big change for the city of Obama as well if he wins the nomination and is elected president," Fujiwara said.

THIS WAS (part of) MY POST FROM NOV. 9TH, 2007:

"SOOooooo…Today i made my pilgrimage! Thats right, I DID! And now youre wondering, ”How can a girl who isnt religious make any sort of pilgrimage?” Well, if you know me, you know that i am close to religiously passionate about politics. And today, ladies and gents, I made the trek across Japan to the opposite coast to the town of OBAMA. Beautiful, quaint fishing town with lush green hills, beautiful coastlines, and yummy sea food. They also specialize in luxury chopsticks, so i went ahead and bought Mr. and Mrs. Barack Obama their very own chopsticks from their very own Japanese fishing village. I fully intend on writing them a witty letter and sending them the chopsticks with some pictures enclosed as well.. It was a day to remember… and it was funny how everyone would react when i would express to them my desire for a train ticket with the destination Obama: a middle-of-no-where, nothing-to-do fishing town. ”why she want to go there?!” "

I feel so totally cool right now. Who cares if I can't tell if it's really the story, or if its just the Prednisone talking. I am Queen.

Johnson's 1986 debut album, Tones, certainly proved that the hype was warranted. Playing with the ace rhythm section of bassist Roscoe Beck and drummer Tommy Taylor, Johnson mixed blazing instrumentals ("Zap," "Victory") with Beatles-influenced vocal tunes like "Emerald Eyes" and "Bristol Shore." Johnson used the same half-and-half format on the 1990 follow-up, Ah Via Musicom; but a trio of the album's tunes surprisingly made him the first artist to have three instrumentals from the same album to chart in the Top Ten in any format (with "Cliffs of Dover" earning Johnson a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental" [Source:ArtistDirect]

Joe and I didn't go down to the Gulf with the intention of writing an article about race. We didn't go out of our way to ask questions about it when we initially arrived because we really didn't think it was going to emerge as a focal point of our coverage.

But after no more than a day of talking to people on the coast, it really was impossible to escape the racial subtext to so much of the conversation about rebuilding. From Will Williamson, with his very clear references to welfare dependency, to Frahn Koerner and her frustration at city leaders for allowing accusations of racism to "stifle the discussion," it was almost startling to hear so much discussion of a racial divide.

I want to be very clear: our article today isn't a blanket accusation of racism across the Gulf region. Most of the folks quoted in the piece are extraordinarily well-meaning, and there's a lot of goodwill on both sides. But it somehow gets muffled and distorted when you approach the issue of race. And because of the racial and economic geography of New Orleans, almost every issue takes on a racial component.

If there are any sociology students out there looking for a thesis, book your flight to the Big Easy.

In past coverage of Katrina and its aftermath, the DTH hasn't ventured into New Orleans. In part, that's because the city was largely off-limits when we made our first trip to the Gulf just days after the storm. And in part, it's because New Orleans is an intimidating story to report. There's an overwhelming amount of information to convey, and every person you meet has an incredibly interesting story to tell.

But Joe and I both visited the city within the past year, and both came away with the conviction that we needed to write about it. Mississippi is a fascinating story, and one that has been largely neglected in the last two years. But no discussion of Katrina is truly relevant without New Orleans.

Given the continued urgency of the situation, it's bizarre to see that there's very little media attention being given to the two-year anniversary. There has been periodic coverage in major newspapers, with the NYTimes devoting significant real estate to articles focused on levees, hospitals or the tourism industry. But nothing of note on the actual anniversary of the storm.

There has also been strikingly little coverage of individuals. In a place that has not seen a boring day in the last two years, that's a shame. Take a look at Joe's profile of Hassan Awad in today's DTH to understand why.

Back in 2005, about a week after Katrina turned Waveland into a giant debris field, photographer Brandon Smith met one of the Brookses’ four sons. At the time, Brennan Brooks was a little tipsy. And he had scantily clad young women tucked under each arm as he wandered around the destroyed town, coping with the post-storm daze in his own distinctive way. He led us back to the Brooks family home, and that was the auspicious start to one of the most rewarding friendships to come out of the DTH’s ongoing coverage in Mississippi.

The sheer energy that this family has brought to bear in the aftermath of the storm is impossible to capture in print. I hope you’ll take the time to watch Judi Brooks’ video on our multimedia site, so you can get just a glimmer of what it takes to recover so rapidly from something so overwhelming. Tommy and Judi have a demeanor that makes you feel like they’re old family friends, like you’ve lived down the street from them for ages. They joke freely in front of guests. “We’re getting divorced as soon as all of this is over,” Tommy deadpanned while standing in the kitchen. “We’re just waiting ‘til all the boys are gone, because I don’t want to pay child support.” Judi laughed and took a swipe at his arm.

Katrina marked the third time that Tommy Brooks has been wiped out. He lost everything in Camille in 1969, and filed for bankruptcy in 1995 after his youngest son Brett became gravely ill. Now, with Brett finishing up his senior of high school and the family home undergoing an impressive renovation, Tommy took a moment to look back. “It’s a good feeling,” he said, wiping sweat away from his forehead while surveying his backyard. “It’s all coming back together.”

Judi said that you’re choices in coping with the storm are to laugh, cry or curse. Her family has done a lot of each, but its been mostly laughter. And when you think about the scene they were facing two years ago, that’s simply amazing. I can’t wait to see them again.

I still remember cresting the railroad tracks in Waveland for the first time just days after the storm, and being utterly dumbfounded at the violence that was wrought on the streets near the water. This wasn’t simply a community of beach cottages and vacation condos, but the kind of brick and mortar houses you might see in any town in America. Katrina had shattered them, and left hulking piles of debris nestled against the railroad tracks and tangled in stands of trees.

So looking at it now, on my fifth trip, the overgrown, empty lots almost seem like progress. After all, there are no puddles of fetid water, no giant patches of muddy earth where bulldozers have been working to clear debris. I looked at the handful of houses that have been rebuilt and felt a little impressed with the progress.

But Joe and Beth, visiting this landscape for the first time, felt shocked. They didn’t see the few new homes and think about progress; they saw the gaping holes where hundreds of other homes should have been, and thought about stagnation. Their reactions reminded me of the stark difference between what people expect the Gulf Coast to look like at the two-year mark, and the reality of what’s actually there.

It’s true that the coast has come a long way, and a tremendous number of flooded homes have been cleaned out and made livable again. But the coast is not back in any sort of complete sense, and in some cases it remains unclear whether it ever will be. In writing this series, we have tried to walk a fine line between being overly bleak — there is great hope among Gulf Coast residents, after all — and too sanguine.

This isn’t an anniversary story; it’s ongoing coverage of an event that is still unfolding. Thank you for staying interested, and we look forward to hearing from you.

I have been waiting not so very patiently to do this post, for several weeks. Now that this record is finally out, I can make some noise about it. Honestly, I have had a hard time containing myself. When I first heard this record, it immediately went on my “Must Own” list. And these days, that is becoming a shorter and shorter list.

There is really something for everyone here. If you are someone that likes to listen to great progressive rock, or if you are a guitar aficionado, Hero Shuffle is for you.

For someone who likes to just listen to great music, this is a great record. This is the kind of record that you just want to grab on your way to the convertible, take the top off, and drive, with the sound somewhere around 10. Make sure that it is sunny, and around 75 degrees or more.

For you guitar players, be ready to be blown away. The riffs will have you wanting more. And after listening to the title cut, Hero Shuffle, you will promptly take all of your gear, and place it in the nearest trashcan. The combination of Rex, Phil Keaggy and Eric Johnson is unbelievable. By the end of the record, you will go back to that trashcan and pull all of your gear out, put it back in place, and resolve to be a better player.

Power songs like Blue Sky Morning (featuring Dan Huff), Faith, Hope, Love and my favorite, The Best That I Can Do, set high standards for progressive rock excellence. Additionally, strong ballads like Circle With No End, Welcome to Heaven, and Holy Serenade demonstrate well-crafted music and lyrics. Finally, songs like Always Been Her, Temporary Sanity and Teach Me How To Love You show Rex’s versatility as an artist.

This is what Phil, Eric, and Dan have to say about Rex, and Hero Shuffle:

"I have come to believe that Rex is one of the best guitarists around these days... be sure to listen to his latest CD. Great stuff! - Phil Keaggy

"Rex is a talented musician, not only with a fine guitar style, but as an accomplished singer and song writer as well." - Eric Johnson

"In essence, Rex is in total control of his instrument. Chops are not an issue... there is no higher praise I can give." - Dan Huff

This is the best record I have gotten my hands on in a long time. But hey, don’t take my word for it. Check out Rex’s site. And to hear clips from the record go here.

From The Next Reformation, to those about to rock, we salute you!

Rambling

You know, I used to be one of the folks who would check my mail every single day without fail. In fact, just to be sure, on really bored days, I'd end up going through my mailbox four or five times. It was less because I was actually expecting mail, and more because it was something of a habit as my mind scampered around to figure out what pages I needed to visit. These days, though, my MSN clogs everything up for a while, so I get to sort that out in my head quickly enough.

So imagine my surprise when I checked my mail today (the first time in probably a couple of weeks), and I saw this glaring, attention-grabbing mail just begging me to look at it, which I did. Suddenly I realise that it's not just the alumni rehearsals that are in the week after (on Wednesday, Thursday and maybe Friday), but the concert is quite (in)conveniently on Saturday. I don't know if I'm making any point here, really, but it just feels so sudden. I wasn't entirely expecting it, but then again, when you think about it, how else could it be?

Thankfully, I've got my mouthpiece and a couple of reeds ready. Just because I'm paranoid, I've got my spare mouthpiece with it too. All rarin' to go. I'm caught in that unusual position when you don't actually know if you're jumping into a bed of spikes or roses. The spirit is unwilling, and the flesh is divided. That's quite a morbid image, isn't it? o_O

Anyway, time for another album I would recommend.

Basic Information

Album: Layla (And Other Assorted Love Songs)
Artist: Derek and the Dominoes
Year: 1970

Why You Should Hear It

At first glance, this looks like a retro album by some retro band that faded into obscurity during the '70s, but that couldn't be further away from the truth. Derek and the Dominoes may have made only one studio album, but what an album it was. There's Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, the great Bobby Whitlock, Eric Clapton, and the unparalleled slide guitar genius in Duane Allman, from the Allman Brothers Band. But more importantly, this is the album that precipitated the foundations of most of my musical sensibilities today. That's why it remains one of the most significant records I've heard to this day.

It's not exactly a blues album, or a rock showcase, or a pop work. It's an intoxicating blend of all of that, and then some. You get the feeling that the band is there to jam, with the three guitarists (Allman, Clapton and Whitlock) converging in exciting stretches that you don't hear anymore nowadays (yes, three guitarists playing sensible, clever lines at the same time that actually complement one another). Yet, there's enough focus in here to give shape and form to each song, which aren't in any way nearing the likes of Lennon and McCartney, but they sure are infectious.

Much of this is fuelled by the lead voice in Allman's guitar. (You might want to note that I consider him the finest guitarist of all time.) Uplifting, inspiring and irresistible, Skydog was a force of nature. The band behind him was astoundingly capable and had ambition to match. A quick listen to this album brings you across an enormously colourful landscape comprised of all manner of emotion and sound. It is not merely a carefully-engineered product; it is a stirring work of art riding on the twin engines of talent and the enjoyment of it. This is... a natural fire, beautiful, untamed (in a good way), and hardly reproducible.

There aren't words for the unstoppable combination of capabilities and flair in the most rapturous tracks on this album. Neither are there words for the meticulously-performed quiet moments. Most of all, surely nothing can be said about the high points here, then. Yet, it is when they are joined and experienced that you get blown away. Blown away real good, too, I might add.

What's the word I used again? Oh yes, that's right.

Intoxicating.

Highlights

Bell Bottom Blues is among the three most important love songs to me (and the other two will be making an appearance on this list soon enough, I should think), steeped in sweetness and subdued angst. It's nice to hear a raw, diamond-in-the-rough performance of Have You Ever Loved a Woman? by a young Eric Clapton, where Duance Allman actually doesn't feature as prominently as he does in the other tracks. It's a different kind of charm, I suppose. The ending coda in Why Does Love Got to be so Sad? is vintage Derek and the Dominoes (though there's not much in the way of a repertoire to choose from), with an electrifying intertwining of the trio of guitar voices to impressive effect.

Key to the Highway should pretty much show off what Duane Allman can do (and what a well-executed blues number is), but it's the momentous Little Wing that stands out above even the title track Layla. Recorded shortly after Hendrix's death, the saccharine tune becomes a wholly different, and utterly haunting, rendition here. Fiery and sentimental at the same time, the band soars to immense heights and the song becomes a towering achievement framed by the ghostly wail of Allman's slide guitar. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it. And that's a good thing.

If You Like This...

Well, Eric Clapton plays a very different way today, although you can still here a fundamental sound in here that he channels through most of his playing today. As much as I adore his work (which is really a lot), I know that that's only a bit of fanboyism. You might want to be careful of what you pick up from his catalogue. It's not all... what you expect. (And if your expectations differ from the real thing, you could be in for a major disappointment.) Bobby Whitlock's a little harder to find, though. In fact, I'm not actually sure if he's playing anymore.

The Allman Brothers Band still plays today, with the amazing Warren Haynes sitting in Duane Allman's place these days. (I also think that Dickey Betts is quite the guitarist. =)) Somehow, though, it's not quite the same without Duane.

If it's the blues that entertains you here, there's a whole massive world out there for you to explore (and you can come to me, and I'll get you started). If it's the rock that appeals to you, then go back down the history books and start with the big names, like Hendrix, or Pink Floyd. But if it's the guitar work that makes your eyes widen and your jaws drop, then it is my pleasure to recommend Eric Johnson. He can be an elusive character in stores around these parts, but it'll be worth the hunt. I'm pretty sure HMV could make an order for you too, anyway. Try his newest album, Bloom, for a taste of what this wizard can do.

Afterthoughts

There's a feeling in my gut, like a stab with a knife, whenever I hear that another one of my rock or blues heroes has bitten the dust. (In recent years, most notably, the late Ray Charles and John Lee Hooker, as well as probably my favourite Beatle, George Harrison.) LAOAL stands as a grim reminder of all that. Shortly after the recording of the album, Duane Allman passed away in a motorcycle accident. Carl Radle died of alcohol poisoning in the early '80s. Jim Gordon, a diagnosed schizophrenic, killed his mother, and was sent to a mental institution. I believe he is still there today.

But it's not just a painful edifice carved in a past that no one wants to remember. The fact that the music's still as viable and as captivating as it was back in the day is a startling testament to the spiritual endurance and power of the art. I hate to think about the day when they're all gone and I'm left to listen to my old records in a world where no one bothers to remember them any more. But that day will probably come to all of us, in one way or another. There are always things that we will remember that no one else does. These things fade away in time, along with ourselves altogether. It seems like a pity when you think of it that way, but that's the way it goes.

It's a natural thing, a circle-of-life metaphor. These are the people that opened up a whole new world for us, the people that introduced us to the forces of jazz, of blues, of rock n' roll. These are the people who mean something to you and me, who define the character of our lives without even knowing it. You start out in a sea of shroud, but they give you direction. It wasn't as if they had a map or anything; they were pretty much exploring around like you and I. The difference was, they had a light. And with that light, they found new corners, new heights, new places. These are the people who shared their lives and their soul with you and I, and whenever one of them leaves, there always seems to be a vacuum left behind.

But when the dust settles and the mind clears, a stark realisation takes over, that there's no vacuum to fill at all. That they haven't really disappeared from our hearts, or our minds. That there is a legacy far beyond the biological basics of posterity.

Our heroes have left us, but the music lives on.
