We're happy to see that both Green Lodging News and Environmental News Network (ENN) covered our latest news about Playa Viva investing in its community and strengthening the area’s long-term economic viability. Green Lodging News focuses on sustainability issues in the hospitality industry while ENN, one of the oldest and most respected environmental news services, attracts environmental leaders and top executives.

As David says, “We can only have a vibrant successful project if the surrounding community is thriving, healthy, and self-sufficient, today and well in to the future." Part of that success means working hard to ensure environmental quality: water, air, and food. Of course they matter to local residents and they matter to the Playa Viva team. A parting thought about green lodging in general.

"Imagine if every ‘green’ hotel in the US was actively working to revitalize inner city neighborhoods, developing community gardens so low-income people had access to healthy food, supporting alternatives to incineration, and supporting local small businesses. That’s what Playa Viva is doing on the beach in Mexico and that’s what travel with ethics is all about.”

I was surprised it isn't more widely publisized (www.enn.ie). It markets itself as "Ireland's IT Newswire" & I assume this puts it in competition with sites such as Silicon Republic (http://www.siliconrepublic.com/). Although Silicon Republic is the better known, ENN also seems to have a handle on IT news here. Silicon Republic would be my first choice for Irish IT news on-line & it does seem to have a more 'modern' feel to the website. ENN feels a little outdated. You can subscribe to both wesites & recieve e-mail up-dates, but Silicon Republic has the advantage of offering a "Tell us what you think!" section. Of course, the major difference is the fact that Silicon Republic offers analysis, whereas ENN seems to be more of a website that publishes press releases. It is always nice to have an alternative.........

Where is the latest desalination plant being built? Brownsville, Texas.

This article posted on the Environmental News Network caught our eye after all the recent news about green technology in Israel.

The Brownsville venture got fast-tracked during a period of alarming drought and rapid population growth. From 1990 to 2000, the Brownsville area grew 43 percent to 372,000 people, and the population is expected to approach 500,000 by 2020.

Every drop of the Rio Grande, the river shared by Texas and Mexico, is already accounted for. A plant that purifies brackish groundwater provides enough water to meet about one-fourth of Brownsville's current peak demand, but groundwater may not last through a long-term drought.

Desalination is "part of the tools in the toolbox" of 4,500 water management strategies in the state's water plan, Texas Water Development Board spokeswoman Carla Daws said.

"We should never become complacent because of the history of our state having repeated droughts," she said.

And they mention Israel, too, among the countries pursuing this technology:

About two-thirds of the world's desalinated water is produced in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and North Africa. Perth, Australia, is looking to meet a third of its fresh water demand by removing salt from sea water.

In March, Israel showed off its plant at the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon that can process 87 million gallons of water a day. Singapore opened a sea water desalination plant in 2005 hoping it will meet at least 10 percent of its water needs. Two months ago, General Electric Co. announced a $220 million contract to build a plant in South Africa.

In other news from BoingBoing, you probably better lay off drinking bottled water from Fiji.. or maybe lay drinking bottled water altogether.
