This is a usability analysis of the E17 window manipulation and focus configuration settings. I use E17 since it's available in CVS some years ago. And I'm still confused by the nightmare of some configuration options. The image below shows some open configuration dialogs. Some settings are marked with red numbers. At some point in this text I reference to this numbers.

(1) There are two options in the "Window Resize Geometry" field. The "Follow the window as it resizes" option is only used if the "Display information" option is enabled. So the "Follow the window as it resizes" option should be grayed out while the "Display information" is not enabled.

(2) The first two options in the "Automatic New Window Placement" are confusing me. At first nobody knows what is a "Smart Placement". And what's the difference to "Don't hide Gadgets"? I would call this "smart" too. Perhaps it's possible to find some better wordings here. Perhaps "Default Placement"?

(3) The "Raise when clicking to focus" does include the "Raise when starting to move or resize" option. If one enables the "Raise when clicking to focus" checkbox, then the "Raise when starting to move or resize" checkbox should be grayed out.

(4) The "Maximize Policy" option field has two option areas in it. A more visible border should be visible between both areas.

(5) I've not found out the usage of the "Allow window manipulation" checkbox. If enabled or disabled my windows are always able to manipulate in maximization state. Perhaps it's broken or I don't understand the option.

(6) Here is again the question. What is the smart in "Smart expansion"? And what's the difference to "Expand the window"? Also here "Default Expansion" and something else meaningful would be helpful for new users.

(7) Not sure here, but is it really useful or even possible to raise a window without giving it the focus? Perhaps it's also useful here to gray out one of both while one is selected.

(8) I wasn't able to find out what is the difference between a desk and a screen. Is this a multi monitor setting (I've only one)? If yes, then this should be moved to a "Multi monitor" option area or perhaps to a multi monitor settings dialog.

(9) Not sure here, but why does the option exist to raise the window without focus while switching. What is the benefit of this option?

(10) I wasn't able to find out the usage of the "Uncover window while selecting" checkbox.

(11) Oh, this one is a bug that I noticed while playing around with the "Default border style" settings. It seems only to happen with the xfce4 terminal. All other windows and other terminals work well. It seems the refresh is broken. Even after E17 restart the bug is still there. Hm, I need to figure out how to remove and reproduce that bug.

(12) The first what I noticed here is that all options below "Animate the shading and unshading of windows" should be grayed out while the checkbox is not checked. The time slider is working well, but the four options below feel all like linear shading. Maybe the difference is to small and I didn't notice it or maybe it's broken. No idea what it should look like.

Conclusion

I think Enlightenment is really great and a experienced user is able to configure it. In the past I tried nearly every window manager that is available for X11 and E17 is far the most configurable of all. But this is also the biggest problem of E17. There are to much and confusing configuration options. New users are slayed by so many options. I know there's the basic and advanced dialog button. This helps much, but doesn't remove all problems.

Beside the comments above here are my two ideas for improving the situation:

o Use the possibility to gray out not selectable options. This would help much to see what options do really enable and disable a feature and what options are only sub options that influence only the basic option.

o Fight against each useless option. An option that influences "something", but has no real benefit for the user should be discussed again. It's not a shame to remove an option that (nearly) nobody uses!

“….You, who are inclined to escape from the states of mundane existence, hold fast to th

"....You, who are inclined to escape from the states of mundane existence, hold fast to the jewel of the spirit of awakening." Shantideva

Mindfulness is perhaps the single most difficult task we face.

To keep ourselves always aware and focused on the now, unhindered by the myriad events and complexities of our daily lives, our past, or an imaginary future, is a state of mind that is absolutely vital if we want to escape the normal suffering of our everyday lives. S.O.E.

Perhaps it would be helpful to take a quick look at suffering. There are many types and forms of suffering in this conditional reality we live in.
There is the very real physical suffering, such as birth, illness, accidents, and death. Then, there are the more subtle forms of suffering such as disappointment, disillusionment, and dissatisfaction. Generally we don't think of such as suffering, but upon close examination we see that it is, as it stands between us and our peace and serenity.

There are many factors that could be considered as the cause of such suffering, factors like our finances, our social circle, the leaders of our nation, etc.. However, in truth there is but one root cause for all our disappointment, disillusionment, and dissatisfaction.

That root cause is generally ignorance.

When I was a youth, I thought ignorance was the equivalent of dumb, stupid, or something wrong with an individual that could not be fixed. It wasn't until I began to study the teaching of the enlightened, or the Bhudda Dharma, that I understood it for what it really is: "...the failure to perceive reality correctly, or as it really is."

An examination, both of the dictionary, and a real-life examination of the effects and causes of ignorance, reveals that it is closely related to the word ignore! In other words, we are ignoring reality!

So in truth, all this type of suffering, is a result of the way we percieve things. If you haven't had the above realization yet, I suggest that you take a great deal of time and thought to see if indeed, this is not really the truth of the matter. I myself, did not have this realization over night. It was the result of many hours of reading and reflection. Slowly I began to see; any condition of suffering is suffering only if I designate it as such.

"But wait!" you say, "If I break a bone, or cut myself, then I feel pain-which is suffering!"

Yes, when injured, you feel a sensation called pain. Read this again. You felt a sensation. It did not become suffering until your mind, through long years of habit, designated it as suffering! You did not feel suffering until you perceived a certain condition and designated it as suffering!So how is all this important?

Think about it. If you decided that the dissatisfaction you feel with your job was a good thing, because you could use it as a strong motivator to either find a better job, or advance at your present situation, Then that feeling of dissatisfaction becomes more acceptable as you know it will bring about a better condition in the future!

If you decided that disillusionment was actually the result of keener perception, wouldn't it feel good to be better in touch with reality?

And how about disapointment? Well..., when have you ever known life to turn out exactly as you wanted it to in every situation? Is that even possible? No! Of course not! So then, life is proceeding exactly as usual, all is well, the universe is still turning as it always has, and this means new possibilities will reveal themselves if you don't cling to those that have passed. And some of those will work out the way you wish!

In the end, we are all as happy as we decide to be!

So what does all this have to do with mindfulness?

It takes a constant, unrelenting effort to acheive the awakened state of mind that causes us no suffering. Once we have attained this enlightened state of mind, it will stay with us, but it takes a consistent, focused effort to overcome years of ignorance.

Most people will refuse to even admit that they need change, let alone attempt it!

Mindfulness comes into play on a moment-by-moment basis, as we must view every thought pattern in the light of: "Is this perception truly reality, or is it ignorance?" Holding fast to this mindfulness is 'The Spirit of Awakening'.

First I created a wiki entry about E17 compatible composite managers. But people told me it doesn't belong into the official wiki as it has no support at the moment. So I insert it into my Blog to save the links.

There're several X composite managers that work with E17. This article explains some composite manager that work with E17. See the article Compositing window manager on wikipedia for a formal description.

Xcompmgr
Xcompmgr is a simple composite window manager, capable of rendering drop shadows and, with the use of the transset utility, primitive window transparency. Designed solely as a proof-of-concept, xcompmgr is a lightweight alternative to Compiz Fusion and similar composite managers.

Because it does not replace any existing window manager, it is an ideal solution for E17 users seeking a more elegant desktop. It's packaged for the most distributions and easy to install. It runs out of the box with E17, but had some problems. For example the gnome-terminal had no window border.

Bling
This composite manager is implemented as module for E17. It's available in CVS (e_modules/bling). The easy_e17.sh script installs this module by default. So it's easy to install. Bling looks not bad, but compared to other composite manager it feels really slow. The source code looks not really extensible.

Bang
The Bang composite manager is available here.

Ecomorph
The Ecomorph composite manager is available here.

Egloo
The Egloo composite manager is available here.

$ sudo aptitude install automake libtool xorg-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libglu1-mesa-dev libxslt1 libxslt1-dev python-dev python-pyrex libembryo-dev cvs g77 intltool

$ git clone git://staff.get-e.org/users/jeffdameth/e.git
$ cd e && git checkout --track -b ecomorph origin/ecomorph
$ ./autogen.sh
$ make
$ sudo make install
$ cd ..

$ git clone git://staff.get-e.org/users/jeffdameth/compiz.git
$ cd compiz && git checkout --track -b ecomorph origin/ecomorph
$ ./autogen.sh
$ make
$ sudo make install
$ cp -r ecomp ~/.config/
$ cd ..

$ git clone git://staff.get-e.org/users/jeffdameth/libecompconfig.git
$ cd libecompconfig
$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install
$ cd ..

$ git clone git //staff.get-e.org/users/jeffdameth/ecompconfig-python.git
$cd ecompconfig-python
$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install
$ cd ..

$ git clone git://staff.get-e.org/users/jeffdameth/ecsm.git
$ cd ecsm
$ ./setup.py build
$ sudo ./setup.py install --prefix=/usr

$ ./ecomorph.sh &
$ /local/bin/enlightenment -evil

En otros:

$ ecomorph ccp &
$ /local/bin/enlightenment -evil

Y la utilidad de configuración gráfica:

$ ecsm

$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://e17.dunnewind.net/ubuntu hardy e17
deb-src http://e17.dunnewind.net/ubuntu hardy e17

$ wget http://lut1n.ifrance.com/repo_key.asc
$ sudo apt-key add repo_key.asc

Y actualizamos apt:

$ sudo aptitude update

Ahora instalamos Enlightenment:

$ sudo aptitude install e17 e17-devel-extras

$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://cafelinux.org/Downloads/oz-os tinwoodman main

Actualizamos e instalamos Enlightenment:

$ sudo aptitude update && sudo apt-get install e17-cvs

Salu2

He vuelto! xD. No he podido escribir estos días.

Salu2

First time I tried to get some data from a asynchronous source in an Edje application it was really hard to find out how to do it. For that reason I wrote two interfaces (C and C++) that helps to ease that task and are flexible enough for most cases. The C version has no other dependencies and the C++ version has only libsigc++ as dependency (beside Ecore of course). The licence is BSD. Have fun with it.

Here is the C version:
ecore_dispatcher.h
ecore_dispatcher.c

Here is the C++ version (not depend on the C version!)
EcoreDispatcher.h
EcoreDispatcher.cpp

Example: (needs Joystick.cpp)

EcoreDispatcher m_buttonDispatcher;
EcoreDispatcher m_axisDispatcher;

m_axisDispatcher.signalDispatch.connect (sigc::mem_fun (this, &ControlManager::onJoystickAxis));
m_buttonDispatcher.signalDispatch.connect (sigc::mem_fun (this, &ControlManager::onJoystickButton));

void ControlManager::onJoystickAxis (int missedEvents)
{
 // dispatched callback
}

void ControlManager::onJoystickButton (int missedEvents)
{
 // dispatched callback
}
