Written By: Eloisa James
Published By: Avon Books, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, New York, 2008, First Avon Books Printing, 373 pages, paperback, ISBN 978-0-06-124557-2

“Duchess By Night is a decadent, sizzling romp; a tale of Historical Romance that is thoroughly enjoyable.”BCM

Lady Harriet, Duchess of Berrow is the portrait of perfection and responsibility. But being a Duchess has turned into a weighty burden and has become intolerably suffocating. The beautiful Lady Harriet has been a widow for more then two years and has lived the luxurious but demanding life of integrity and refinement that is required of her.
When the ducal bonds become too suffocating, Harriet wishes for some sort of diversion that would liven up her world. Why can’t she be more like the ravishing Duchess of Beaumont or the gorgeous Duchess of Cosway?
As Harriet longs for some freedom and distraction, she and her cohorts, a fellow Lord and two Ladies of the Realm, come up with a plan to attend the scandalous party hosted by the infamous Lord Justinian Strange. They decided that Lady Harriet would be disguised as a man so she can remain anonymous.
Lord Justinian Strange also known as Jem, hosts titillating fete’s at his large Country Estate on a continuous basis.
Jem is famous because of his elaborate and scandalous parties and his vast fortune. Anyone daring enough to risk scandal was sure to have a delightful time in his ‘strange’ world.
As a widower and father of an eight year old daughter, Jem is not nearly as peculiar as many would like to believe. The love he has for his adorable daughter Eugenia, keeps Lord Strange from slipping too deeply into the fantastical-world he has created on his Estate.
With an inventive mind and limitless funds at his disposal, why should he not host parties and gatherings where actors, musicians and people from all stations of life could mingle freely and take pleasure in self-indulgence?
When Jem finds himself strangely attracted to the young man called Mr. Cope, he simply can not understand it. He had never considered himself to be a ‘molly’...

Duchess By Night is a lovely story of strictures falling away and the freedom to enjoy life’s pleasures. As Lady Harriet starts to experience life from a male perspective she realizes that she has been missing out on a lot for much of her young life.
I really enjoyed the flow of the story and found that it was somewhat unique, compared to some of the standard historical romances I’ve read. It had an added freshness and there were some encouraging variations from the usual structure.
The characters were convincing and well described. I did find Lord Strange’s limitless amount of money a little over the top, but I guess that is just the view from a ‘regular’ person who isn’t rolling in heaps of money *smiles*.
The parties are lovely and well described. The steamy sex scenes between Harriet and Jem are mouth-watering!
I really enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it!

only a few things have been happening. we saw stereolab and the walkmen last week, both at cat's cradle. both really fun and inspiring and energetic. i've discovered that i tend to have a much better time at shows if i remember to bring earplugs and stay sober. that's because i love music and hearing more than i love falling over and going deaf. i haven't uploaded photos yet, and none of them are spectacular, but i'm sure that will come soon.

i've also been obsessed with how incredible it's always sunny in philadelphia is (a little late, i realize, but hype was slow on this one). and i've always been a danny devito fan in general, because he seems like a salty uncle. so that's how i came to the conclusion that i will be danny devito for halloween.

First off thank you to everyone who expressed their love and kept my Mom in their prayers, in person

First off thank you to everyone who expressed their love and kept my Mom in their prayers, in person, on the phone or online (on Facebook, through Email or on this blog) during this challenging time.

A week ago, my Mom suffered a stroke. (To read more about it check out my previous post titled: The High Cost of Waiting http://relmes.wordpress.com/2008/09/24/the-high-cost-of-waiting/

But we got lucky!!!

The reason I say "we" is because instead of wondering what might have been, we are wondering what is next, and instead of thinking what we could have done in the past to help her, we are thinking of how we can help her in the future and instead of planning a funeral, we are planning her rehabilitation.

As I mentioned in the last post, when the stroke hit, she recognized she was in trouble and she called for help and getting there saved her life.

But as she realizes now, her life in the future will be different.

She is lucky that the damage of the stroke appears to have effected her vision and her memory.

At this time she has lost her right side vision from one o'clock(if you think of looking straight being twelve o'clock) to the right everywhere except on the bottom. This may or may not improve over time.

Her memory has also been effected.

I describe it this way: If all of her memories were on sheets of paper, all categorized and files for easy and quick retreaval, the stroke messed up that filing system and scattered all of the sheets on the floor.

In the first days following the stroke, she had trouble recalling her last name, her telephone number and even the names of her family members. However, she has improved this by studying her "cheat sheets" in order to re-learn these important facts.

Her short term memory has also been effected, because I can have a conversation with her and a few minutes we can be talking about the same things.

A few of things that I have taken away from this learning process;

If you want to learn and anything is possible. Mom has told me many days she will find herself waking up at night and she will invest the time in studying. She view this as a challenge and I am confident that it will pay off. (I have witnessed her improving every day)

Forced learning doesn't stick. Mom said that when she is trying really hard to remember something it doesn't come to her, but when she is relaxed things come much easier. Although I give her credit that her frustration level has been incredibly low. I know if I were in her situation I would be incredibly frustrated. Just think of how much you retained after cramming for exams in school.

Progress happens when it is enjoyable. Although it has been a tramatic experience for our whole family, I for one have thoroughly enjoyed the time that I have spent with Mom this week. We have laughed (Thank heavens she still has her sense of humour), and we have hugged (she instituted a new family rule that we have to hug each other everytime we see each other) and we have just appreciated the time together.

I know that in my training or coaching sessions I often use laughter as a way to open up the doors of learning, in order to help make the message stick.

As of the time of this post, my Mom is still in the Stroke wing at Grand River Hospital http://www.grandriverhospital.on.ca/ and will probably be there until at least Friday. Then hopefully she will be able to go home, where she will face a whole new set of challenges.

But if I know my Mom, she will continue to face those challenges with the same sense of adventure and humility that she has demonstrated to me this week.

I will keep you posted on her progress. But in the meantime, keep those prayers coming, because I am convinced they are the reason we are all lucky.

Today was the last day of the experiment. I've spent an entire month as a vegan, not having knowingly eaten any milk, cheese, honey, animal fats or... well, whatever else you can get out of animals.

It was a strangely anti-climactic day, overall. Not that I expected fanfares or a ticker tape parade, but perhaps some greater feeling. I don't even feel relieved, because it hasn't been a bad month. It's been interesting, mostly, with the occasional craving for foods I can't eat.

I learned that I could radically change how I eat, and, hopefully, could endure any other major lifestyle changes. Perhaps endure isn't the right word here; accept, maybe? Accept is better, because it doesn't have that sense of something unpleasant or punitive.

The food has been good throughout — I've experienced a lot of new flavours and different ways to cook. As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about food and who enjoys cooking, that in itself has been a bonus, and even if I had had a horrible time, that would've made it worthwhile, I think.

There have also been changes to the way I cook, too. I've had to be a little less spontaneous and had to be a little more thoughtful about what I'm eating. This just a necessity on a vegan diet, really, unless you plan on eating nothing but salad. Because it's so restricted in what you can eat, you have to plan ahead a little more, make plans in advance for what's going to be on your plate. You also have to be a little watchful about how you eat, especially with prepared and pre-made foods. I know that I spent an inordinate amount of time squinting at the tiny writing on the backs of ordinary food, quite frequently uttering annoyed grunts of disbelief about what foods might contain hidden dairy or honey; I couldn't even eat Mentos, because they contain beeswax, believe it or not. So in respect of being a little more thoughtful about what I eat, how I prepare it and what goes into it, I've learned quite a bit. In future, I may well end up considering a lot more the means and ways of how I eat.

I've also learned that a lot of people will give you funny looks if you tell them you're a vegan, but that a lot more will be fascinated and intrigued by the idea. Not because they want to become vegans themselves, but because it's something so far outside the boundaries of what they're used to when it comes to eating. All too many people in the UK seem to think a meal isn't complete without meat in it; they seem to believe that without meat it isn't really a meal at all. More like a mea- or something, like it's missing the final letter, as if the meat were something to make it complete. Hey, I rhymed!

I'd like to thank everyone and anyone who was reading along, and I'd also like to especially thank my wife, who has been a constant source of support throughout. She's been interested and interacted with me thoroughly and made it more bearable when I needed some support.

I've definitely enjoyed it, I'll say that. It's uncertain right now, to me, what I'll be eating tomorrow. And that's a strangely liberating feeling, whether or not I end up eating tofu or steak.

For tonight, though, I know exactly what I'll be eating. It just seemed fitting, really.

Tonight, I will be eating felafel, to round things out.

Thanks, everyone! Have a good night eating whatever you feel like :)

Epilogue
The next challenge will be taking place in November. I need a month off, I think.

Anyway, the next challenge will be in November, and will be for NaNoWriMo. Stay tuned!

Then she saw an envelope propped up prominently on the center of the bed. It was addressed, "Mom." With the worst premonition, she opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands:

Dear Mom: It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new boyfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Dad and you. I've been finding real passion with Ahmed and he is so nice-even with all his piercings, tattoos, beard, and his motorcycle clothes. But it's not only the passion Mom, I'm pregnant and Ahmed said that we will be very happy. He already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. He wants to have many more children with me and that's now one of my dreams too. Ahmed taught me that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone and we'll be growing it for us and trading it with his friends for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Ahmed can get better; he sure deserves it!! Don't worry Mom, I'm 15 years old now and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I'm sure we'll be back to visit so you can get to know your grand children.

Your daughter, Judith

PS: Mom, none of the above is true. I'm over at the neighbor's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than my report card that's in my desk center drawer. I love you! Call when it is safe for me to come home.

Hi,

Below, is a short story I wrote.

Who?

Let us assume that we are meeting here, in your head. I can hear you thinking "my head?". I am a voice in your head now, anything you read is a voice in your head. Of course, if the guy who wrote me was a better writer, he would have painted with words, and your head would have been a swirl of colors, places, people… He didn't. I am a voice in your head, and we are meeting now. Good day.

Can you hear me? I'll describe myself, my accent is neutral, you find it hard to place me. My tone is heavy, almost masculine. My diction is clear. I am all around you, both your ears hear me harmoniously. You feel bound and locked in position as if there are ropes tying you to your chair. To be a bit more descriptive, your mouth is gagged and your eyes are covered with a velvet cloth.

Now read the previous passage again. Did you? I know you didn't. Every question that you come across while reading, you skip. You don't answer, or think about it. You expect the answer to follow the question. If I were talking to you though, you'd probably answer my questions. You'd seize the opportunity to talk. That's why I gagged your mouth. I've covered your eyes because sight can be a distraction to thinking, you'd want to look around your own head if I let you see. And you're tied up because that way you can't fight me, you can't protest, and you can't move. Now, every question that follows, is really a question. Think of it, try to answer it, before you move on.

Why are you listening to me? You know you can stop anytime, but you'll continue till I've finished saying what I have to say. You're probably putting off something more important than listening to me, you are promising yourself that you'll do it later. The promises you make to yourself are the easiest to break aren't they?

Did you hurt anybody today? Something that you're regretting now? You must have. I am not saying this because every one does bad things all the time, or because everyone attaches morality to what they do, but because of your karma.

What is karma? Haven't you heard of the concept yet? Karma is what you get and what you are. It's a theory, that says you get what you deserve - in a more sugar coated way. Karma also says that you'll be born again, to repent for your sins. Karma says that you'll be born to satisfy your wishes. So you'll be born to do whatever you wanted to do, but couldn't in your previous life, and also to repent for all the sins you committed then. If I am never going to remember my previous life, why would I repent? I would probably blame luck or fate. (Curious isn't it, how you call bad destiny- fate and good fate- destiny?)

Karma made you read this. If God can control time, why should we be born again? Why can't he just adjust our karma by changing what happened in our previous lives. Weird?

Religion is "Listen to what I say, don't think", you can't write fan fiction for the Ramayana, or the Bible can you?

Morality is very queer. If it weren't for morality, we'd all realize that doing helpful things to other people makes them reciprocate. Morality however blurs this perspective and removes a little bit of relativity. Doing "good" becomes a chore while it could have been more enjoyable.

Speaking of Karma, Kalki runs into my head, white horse and all. Why would God want to destroy the world that he built. This common thread of God taking revenge on us can be found in popular thought. If there was a God, he would be responsible for evil. Maybe God said "I am going to rest on the seventh day", and secretly created evil. Sinister?

If ever God returns (was he here before?), he'd probably help us understand religion. He won't be judging us, or punishing us. He'd tell us all to stop talking, and think. What ever he wants to say however would have already been said. God needn't create a new religion anymore. He can just rip off a the best thoughts from around the world and give it to us. He probably destined google to help him.

Abstinence is another concept that is absurd. Why should you shy away from pleasure. What is the point? If you really want to enjoy yourself in heaven, why won't you do it here?

I know I've been talking quite fast.Your thoughts are muddled now. In a couple of hours you'll find yourself thinking about what I said. I'll release you now. I 'll free your mouth and remove the velvet cloth covering your eyes. I'll untie you and let you free.

You will get up, and be my prophet. I am God.

Cheers

Kaber

Quick-UX provides for the rapid, simple and quantifiable assessment of a product's User Experience (UX). In answering the question of Desirability, "Should I use it?" the sub-category of Aesthetics is one of frequent discussion, especially in the latest wave of online products and how they handle content presentation and interaction.

Today, in the same spirit of Quick-UX, let's take a quick look at an Internet product with an Aesthetic value of 2.

Example: Clean, Sharp, Pleasing and Enjoyable (value = 2)

A good example of the Aesthetic variable value of 2 can be seen in the newly released Chrome browser, from Google. Chrome provides a very minimalistic experience, incrementally revealing more information, on-demand and non-intrusively, right when the user needs it. Chrome also makes sound use of transitions to draw the user's attention to new events and actions further increasing the pleasingly simplified experience of the product.

As the user types into the single textbox, the browser infers what information and actions the user will most likely want to take – presenting the decisions and options at an appropriate time.

Opening a new tab, the user is confronted with a simple transition, bringing subtle, non-disruptive, attention to the unique tab region as well as the location of the newly created tab.

Even the “status bar” only appears when there is something to display (e.g. mousing-over a link).

Every single feature does NOT have to be crammed into the interface. A smart minimalist design will provide just enough of the core functionality up front, and allow for the gradual introduction of deeper features and extras as the user interacts with the product.

The ways by which the product responds to the user's mouse and chosen actions can positively add to the aesthetic, or, if unnecessary or excessively implemented, they can then contribute to the unwelcomed sense of gaudiness. For example, if, to view a larger version of a displayed picture, the user clicks a button, a brief transition is utilized to provide for a clear communication of button-click result, the animation will be appreciated. On the other hand, contrary to the minimalist goals, would be upon clicking the button, the page (the user interface) goes into a series of strange and drawn out animations, with clearly unnecessary special effects and flourishes, or other prompts requesting exactly how much bigger the user wanted the picture before it is ever displayed.

The Aesthetic variable's rubric is:

2 if the product presents a clean, sharp, pleasing and enjoyable product environment where interaction is a pleasure. In addition, the product consistently makes good use of mouse-overs and animated transitions.

1 if the product presents generally “OK” Aesthetics. The product may have some mouse-over states and other beneficial transitions, but these states and transitions are found to be incomplete and would benefit from a more comprehensive and consistent implementation.

0 if the product suffers from information and graphical (transitions, interactions, etc.) overload. In this case, the content and graphical aspects of the site continually get in the way of getting the desired task completed quickly, efficiently, and enjoyably.

Posted by Tilia

Holy crap, I'm exhausted. I'm waking up this fine, Sunday morning at around noon, after well over two full days without sleep. The events were as follows:

1.) My Friend

So, I met with Tim to have a few drinks Friday night. I desperately needed the wind down time, and hanging out with Tim has proven a good go-to for enjoyable conversation and too much wine. I did spill again, but not on him this time.

However, I live in North London, pretty close to the central city, and he lives way the hell out in not-quite-London, so we met halfway in Zone 3.

Okay, so, I was in the third circle, on that red line in the middle, all the way to where it ends on the left. I live up in the upper, right-hand side of Zone 2, where the light blue and dark blue lines converge. It was reeeeeeeaaaally far away.

Anyway, long story short, my night bus, and that bus only, was on strike. So, I had to find an alternative bus, and change busses like eight times in the West End. I got a very in depth view of nighttime London trying to get the hell home after our would be quiet-night-drinking.

I fell into bed at around 6am, setting my alarm so I'd get up in time to meet PhD Guy at 1pm, as planned.

2.) My Date

Hungover and feeling near vomiting, I managed to wake up a few hours after arriving home and pull myself into my pre-arranged date outfit that I'd decided on with Jane, however, due to the colder-than-anticipated weather, opted for my knee-high zip up boots rather than the little blue ballet flats I was going to wear. I bought a calms-the-stomach,-you-stupid-drunk pill from the local chemist, and boarded a bus.

I met him on the nicer high street in nearby Islington, and we stopped into a cafe and had a few sodas, chatting amiably.

Though clearly a little nervous, he asked me lots of questions and seems genuinely interested in me and my thoughts on things. The chatting about music was great, as he's a bassist, but some of my other interests, like film and certain historical obsessions, he doesn't really know anything about. This doesn't deduct any points from his potential, it's just getting a handle on what I have to work with here.

We were cut off by some sort of "don't stab people" protest on the street, involving people dressed as cops, surgeons, and mourners, complete with people carrying a coffin, passed directly by where we were sitting. This seemed to be our cue to leave.

We then stopped and had lunch at this Pan-Asian place that Jane and I frequent, for no other reason than I was craving the aloe-vera soda they have there. Sounds gross, but is really amazing. Seriously.

The food is always good, and I was starting to feel much better, so I was putting myself into the conversation more. You have to be really aggressive with the wait staff in this place to get them to pay even the slightest attention to you, so I was continually being very American and flagging them down when we needed something.

This backfired at the end of the meal, when they put the check down in front of me, rather than my date. This was later made a joke of, but if I do end up dating an English guy, I'll probably have to get used to people assuming I wear the pants in the union.

There was also an incredibly awkward, drawn out moment where the waiter stood, hovering and silent, over the table while he waited for PhD Guy's credit card to clear, for a really, really long time. We basically had to run out of the restaurant to not burst into laughter in front of the guy.

We then walked through the street fair/farmers market that was going on in the back of the burrough, and found another gastropub to have a few sodas in. This one had a rooftop terrace that we sat in and chatted about college during a fleeting moment of clear sunlight and perfect crisp breeze.

I reminisced about a few of my friends so well that it actually made me pretty nostalgic. There was this great story about my friend getting his Wii, and all but one game stolen, while I was asleep in the next room ... and the SheCop came and left her fingerprint kit ... *sniff*

Anyway, it started to get late, and I had to be into work at 6, so we caught a bus over to the burrough where the bar is, but got there about 40 minutes early. So, beginning to deplete quickly, I advised we buy some Red Bull from the corner shop and walk around a bit.

We ended up exploring the Older-than-Dirt cemetery that's really close to where I work. I've never been so far into it, and it winds and winds for miles. Everything is ivy-covered and overgrown and the graves are stacked very far back, with crumbling tombstones. It could've potentially turned into a romantic, covert trysting opportunity, but again, he was kind of nervous, and it was more of a lets-make-jokes-and-talk-more kinda thing.

It was still pretty romantic, but just in a less sexually-charged way than I thought it'd be. We had a competition to find the oldest death date in the outer-area of the cemetery where we were. I think I won with an 1830 death date. For some man whose tombstone read, "Here Lies (Georgian name), who died, suddenly, in Scotland."

I laughed over this for a while, and PhD Guy was politely confused as to why it entertained me so.

We parted ways at 6 when I had to be into work. He gave me a hug and I told him I'd had a good time, and he said all the usual awkward parting stuff about maybe hanging out again.

Afternoons are a weird time for the first date, methinks.

3.) My Job

Okay, so in boots with heels, I stood for the next eight hours, serving drinks and slowly dying. My body is completely racked, and I think I'm just going to lay flat on my face for a while.

PhD Guy sent me a text asking to not be put off by the fact that he lives kind of far away, and that he had a great time and would love to see me again. I returned a text with matching sentiment, though I'm still not completely sold on the guy.

I like him, he's very sweet, but I wasn't feeling a ton of sexual tension. It might just be because he was a bit nervous, perhaps that will pass if we meet at night, or something. He's very charming and fun, and I'm just stingy I guess.

We'll see what happens.

Just ever had a day that feels more like a dream. It’s like your on an all day high and you ha

Just ever had a day that feels more like a dream. It's like your on an all day high and you haven't even spliffed? That's the kinda day I had today. I woke up around 8:30 (after going to sleep around 4:30...AM) feeling surprisingly refreshed, like the ppl in those Folgers commercials lol. Then I spent like 3 hours in the living room watching pbs kids (Dragon Tales homie!), and the light was all shining through the windows all perfectly N shiz. Throughout these three hours I kept taking little 5,10,20 min naps (when I go kid mode I GO kid mode...NAPS), and I couldn't stay up for shiz. I ended up completely forgetting I was supposed to do something with this girl and she showed up to the door and I'm like...mid nap lol. She was all "ready?" I'm all "uh...yeah (right)" so I go change out of my yesterday day shirt, but keep my yesterday pants cuz I love em'. I haven't even taken a shower yet (I NEVER left the front room). So we leave don't really do anything and two hours fly by like nothing. I'm back at the house now, just hanging around and remember "Yo I have school today".
I decide to go get ready, and this is when the shower comes in, and what do ya know? During the process of the shower I find out I'm on my period (I don't calender my shiz it just happens when it does...lol), but it doesn't really matter my day is like air and it's all good. SO I get out and go look for something to wear and decide that I'm gonna a keep on yesterdays pants because they are hella sweet and I don't feel like breaking in a freshly dried pair. put on my hella cool (overly worn) boombox and head phones shirt, and proceed to check myself out in the mirror. At this time I start to realize "hey...somethings missing...It needs more", Then I go into my (REALLY NEEDING A CLEANING) room and rummage through the debris on the floor looking for something to add to this hella spiffy outfit. then I look in my closet and see this old granny looking cardigan I got from a thrift store with plans of selling it on eBay, but because of lack of shipping funds I haven't gotten around to it. it's like of course gonna be dope, so I go to the mirror try it on and I'm like "hmmm...not bad".
Only on a day like this would I have worn that (damn...I wish I had pearl earrings). So I'm ready now, and I realize the time, thinking "my ride should have come by now" so I go lay down in my little brother's bed and end up falling asleep for like 2hrs. When I wake up a horns beeping outside, and I see that class starts in 15 mins. This doesn't even faze me it's like a tidal wave could have hit me in the face and I would have smiles and kept on going. I get to school (with 5 min to spare) and remember that we are going to be watching a movie today so I'm like "cool".

**SIDENOTE** I've probably only spoken 10 words the entire day, "I'm living in my brain and loving the view"
SO the movie ends up being "Brave heart" and I'm like "cool" Mel Gibson (edited for hardcore "The Passion" fans :) )is always good. so I float through that, and some bullshit paragraph about what patriotism means to me, and PEACE...class is over. Now I'm here...where is here exactly, well a this particlar moment in your brain :)
I enjoyed my day, how was yours?
Peace
