McCain and the Republicans have been blasting Obama for his trip abroad (which by the way, McCain advised him to take!), and what about McCain's trip to Canada, Mexico, and Colombia? Does he have Alzheimer's or what? Seriously.

I got caught again. Guess it's just my mental recession.

From Rachel Weiner, The Huffington Post:

McCain Forgets Canada in Obama Attack

In an interview with NBC's Kelly O'Donnell airing tonight, John McCain questioned Barack Obama's decision to give a speech in Berlin while he's still a candidate. But MSNBC points out that he's forgetting a recent speech of his own:

"I would rather speak at a rally or a political gathering any place outside of the country after I am president of the United States," McCain told O'Donnell. "But that's a judgment that Sen. Obama and the American people will make."

However, on June 20, McCain himself gave a speech in Canada -- to the Economic Club of Canada -- in which he applauded NAFTA's successes. An implicit message behind that speech was that Obama had been critical of the trade accord. Also, McCain's trip to Canada was paid for by the campaign.

In fact, an ambassador's role in organizing McCain's speech led some Democrats to argue that he was violating the Hatch Act.

Well, I'm writing this now because I doubt I'll get time to later. I just got back from a grueling 4 days of work in Laudun. We did over 20 drops (we had done 10 before, max), working from 8 until 7 most days. After that, we went out and did touristy things every night -- a guy with us had lived in the area and knew all of the best places. I was able to swim in two different rivers and visit two medieval towns (one is just now being reinhabited). All in all... a good week.

And on we go, now to London. I leave tomorrow morning to meet up with two friends there, one from the States, and another who lived in the States for a while. Right now, the plan is to go camping tomorrow night and then just kind of take us where the wind blows later. I'm thinking the wind will atleast blow in the direction of Stonehenge, perhaps Cardiff as well. We'll see...

More on this later, perhaps with pictures!

The Re-branded Saltire, And the Football Kits Of Scotland and England

I didn’t realise, till I looked into it, that the blue background colour of the Saltire - Scot

I didn't realise, till I looked into it, that the blue background colour of the Saltire - Scotland's national flag - had been officially changed in 2003 by the Scottish Executive, as it was then. Well, not changed, exactly; more, standardised.

I'd noticed in pictures of the flag at football matches, SNP photo opportunities, and on car badges that a lighter blue colour seemed to be being adopted than what I had always regarded as the proper blue for the flag: a dark navy, as seen on the Scottish football and rugby team shirts. I assumed this was simply because this is a more popular shade of blue nowadays than traditional navy or royal blues. In this, it was akin to examples of corporate re-branding where companies adopt more universally appealing colours for their logo for marketing purposes. An example of this was a re-branding exercise carried out by the electronics firm Philips a few years ago, where they replaced the traditional royal blue colour of their logo with a lighter, brighter tint that is, in fact, rather similar to the new official colour for the saltire. (See Philips' website to have a look at their logo.)

In some respects, the change in colour for the Saltire could indeed be described as a marketing exercise, the primary beneficiary of which was the SNP. The blue colour concerned - technically called 'pantone 300', which you can see here - is thought to have more universal appeal than traditional navy or royal blues, which are perceived as too masculine and (by that token?) dull. Lighter, brighter and softer blues are said to be more attractive to women (while not being perceived by men as 'too' feminine and therefore putting them off), which means that products marketed or packaged with these colours can be aimed at women as well as men, or at women exclusively.

Now, far be it from me to impugn the masculinity of the Scottish male by implying that Scotland has traded in a properly masculine blue for an 'effeminate' shade on its national flag. But - and you knew that was coming! - would Scottish football and rugby fans be happy to see their national teams wearing pantone 300 instead of their traditional deep, dark blue, which you can see in the background colour on the Scottish FA's website.

Well, maybe some fans would have no qualms about a kit change - not just the women fans! After all, colours similar to pantone 300 are used for many football teams, such as Chelsea and Everton in the English Premier League. I guess a decisive factor would be how nationalistically minded the fans in question were, with more pro-Union Scots being perhaps less willing to make the change; although it has to be said that Glasgow Rangers (traditionally associated with the unionist 'demographic') seems to have thrown themselves unreservedly into pantone 300 territory, to judge from their latest squad photo. But then maybe, in this case, the marketing imperative was the overriding factor!

The reason why the adoption of the new colour for the national flag (and its possible adoption by the football and rugby teams) was such a coup for Scottish nationalists is that it clearly differentiates the Scottish flag from the traditional version of it that was incorporated into the Union Flag (which uses a darker blue, between royal and navy: pantone 280 if you're interested). This means that my previous idea of creating country-specific versions of the Union Flag that have the national flags as 'inserts' in the top-left-hand quadrant wouldn't really work very well in the case of Scotland: you'd be using two different shades of blue, and the visual impression would be a bit of a mess.

Does this mean that we should change the blue colour used in the Union Flag to pantone 300 in order to demonstrate a will to keep Scotland in the Union? Well, I haven't seen Gordon Brown rushing to suggest this, thereby proving his alleged Scottish patriotism at the same time as sticking up for the Union, by ensuring that Scotland's colours remained nailed to the UK mast. Maybe pantone 300 would look just a bit, well, effeminate combined with the red and white of the Union Jack! But really, suggesting that we should amend the Union Flag to better incorporate the re-branded Saltire is just as daft as the notion that the UK's flag should include an explicit symbol for Wales, such as the red dragon or the yellow-cross-on-black-background of St. David. The whole point of the Union Flag, supposedly, is that it is the emblem of a unitary state and therefore is a self-sufficient symbol, showing the incorporation at a given moment of history of three nations (Wales being at that time part of the Kingdom of England) into a United Kingdom. Wanting to change things now to better bring out the individual symbols of the four nations is in fact to demonstrate that that Union is breaking down.

Which shouldn't really, and doesn't, bother an English nationalist such as me. But this is only to bring out the point that it really was quite a clever marketing ploy on the part of nationalist backers of the Saltire's colour change to make sure that it was in fact clearly differentiated - separated out from - the blue of the Union Flag.

But what are the implications for England? Well, from a nationalist perspective, it would be satisfying to see the Scots adopting the lighter blue now used on their flag for their sporting kits. I'm assuming that the Scots are more likely to take the lead in this matter, as they did in 'unilaterally' differentiating their flag colour without considering (or while very much considering) the implications for the Union Flag. If the Scots made this change, then it would give us English the licence, as it were, to get rid of the Union blue we've so far retained for our football kit: the blue shorts of the home colours, which pick up the blue in the Union Flag and, hence, the blue of Scotland. If Scotland were to adopt a new kit colour that was unambiguously that of their national flag, not that of the Union Flag, then we English can do the same without any pangs of misplaced guilt.

The England football team could then play in all white with red trim as its home colours, just as the rugby team does: properly reflecting the white and red of the Flag of St. George. These would be colours our overpaid and jaded players could hopefully wear with renewed pride, as they'd be representing a nation that was clearly marking itself out as a nation distinct from the UK, whose colours England has played under hitherto.

Throw in Jerusalem as the national anthem, and we'd be half-way to self-rule!

While not seeing the actual banquet hall - its actually the ballroom converted into a banquet - it gives the public an idea of what a banquet looks like at one of the world's most famous royal palaces.

"I think it's such a sumptuous sight that everyone will just gasp in amazement," says the curator Kathryn Jones, "It's a spectacle that's worth seeing. Only a tiny minority of the population will have been invited to one so giving everyone else the chance to experience the event was one of the ideas behind doing the exhibition."

Almost everything is set up as if it were a real banquet - with an enormous dining table laid out with hundreds of pieces of rare cutlery, glasses and table decorations.

The silver-gilt plates come from George IV's grand service and have been used for special occasions since the 1800s. The cut crystal glasses on display date back to the Queen's coronation. There will, however, be no food to dine on.

The Queen has held 97 state banquets during her reign - with 77 of them held at Buckingham Palace.

The exhibit will run from July 29th - Septembr 29th.

The last time this many Germans gathered to listen to a charismatic demagogue, I seem to recall it didn't end well.

The Barack Broadcasting Corporation gushes on its website, now indistinguishable from a teenage girl's crushy-mushy Facebook tribute to Barack Hussein Obama, that The Holy One addressed 200,000 adoring fans in Berlin's Tiergarten Park yesterday. They were, sighed Obama's BBC cheerleaders, "scenes reminiscent of a pop concert." And Obama is reminiscent of a pop star in that he spent much of the early Eighties doing cocaine (a typical white drug).

Today, Jesus Obama visited France on the latest leg of his Second Coming Tour ("A fist-bumping success!" Fully booked, Berlin to London! Tickets still available: America.) This was a shrewd move. Why fight to be elected President of the United States when you can just touchdown in France and wait for them to surrender? (Maybe some of Barack's new-found German friends will help with this.)

And ahead of the fifth Beatle's arrival in Britain on Saturday, liberalbaiter has obtained a sneak preview of his itinerary for the day.

Obama for America: The World Tour

Saturday 26 July 2008 A.O. (Anno Obama)

London, England: Schedule

7.00am A quick jog through Hyde Park. Cure sick, feed hungry, house homeless. Grab non-fat decaf latte.

8.10am Interview on BBC Radio Four's Today programme. (N.B. Beware of interviewer James Naughtie; he might blindside with tough questions, such as: "Tell us again why you're so brilliant.")

8.30am On the GMTV sofa for a grilling from Kate Garraway. Topic: Highlights and the fortysomething man. Guest, Lorraine Kelly slot. Contestant on quiz: Guess the dildo.

9.00am Photo-op with local London religious groups. Campaign aide will keep the Muslims talking while pictures being taken.

10.00am Meet Prime Minister Tony Blair David Cameron Gordon Brown. Congratulate him on his first year in office. (N.B. Do not mention Tony Blair, credit crunch, opinion polls.)

11.00am Meet Conservative leader David Cameron. Congratulate him on Gordon Brown's first year in office. Promise to strengthen ties/save planet. Joint cycling photo-op optional.

12noon Skip lunch. Power walk across the Thames (awe-struck crowd already booked). Address Guardian employees. Topic: Hating America Together. Appear on Afternoon Live on Sky News. (N.B. Keep fist-jab at ready, Kay Burley can snap.)

1.00pm Photo-op with homeless man. Bum will ask Sen. Obama: "Spare change, buddy?" Obama will reply: "That's right, my friend. We all need change we can believe in."

2.00pm Cutting ribbon at new Lambeth Transpersons Against Gender-Based Epithets centre.

3.00pm Find Madeleine McCann, alive and well. Return to parents. Give live TV interviews on the importance of families. Off the record, imply to journalists Republican National Committee stole Madeleine because she supported universal healthcare.

4.00pm Visit Hackney Modern YouTube Academy. Knife-proof vest advised.

5.00pm Meet Archbishop of Canterbury. Speak about influence of Christianity on your political outlook. If asked about gay ministers, to the best of your knowledge Rev. Jeremiah Wright is happily married. (Ahead of this meeting there will be a half-hour tutorial on Christianity: "Jesus: More than a Vote Winner in Kansas".)

7.00pm Dinner with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Buckingham Palace. Avoid the husband. Might ask you to shine his shoes.

9.00pm Drinks reception with Tony Blair. (Will need to arrive early to turn water into wine.)

11.00pm Quickly appear on a slice of toast in Middlesex to confirm faithful's belief in Obama. Few hours sleep, hop on plane, and back to important business of pretending to love America.

The good men and women of the Glasgow East by-election have hammered in the last nail in Gordon Brow

The good men and women of the Glasgow East by-election have hammered in the last nail in Gordon Brown’s political coffin. Alas, none of the New Labour politicians on media duty this morning felt able to either finger Gordon for this defeat of defeats, or to convincingly endorse him. No doubt all know only too well that anyone overtly critical of the Brown man might yet be damned in the dying days of the current jefatura. But all will also know that anyone too loyal to the capo on life support will him/herself go down if or when someone finally musters the courage to pull the plug.

The qualification ‘if or when’ is important because it is not clear that anyone will be willing to pull that plug. There is little or nothing to be gained from doing so—New Labour’s fortunes, like Gordon Brown’s, are now damned beyond the point of any possible recovery. Any new prime minister will arguably be as much of a lame duck as Brown is, if not more so. Tony Blair must be smiling in his fiercely guarded office in Tel Aviv, or in his specially fortified home bunker in London. Five or so years ago it became clear to many that Blair would hold on to power long enough to assuage his ego—an ego battered by the biggest protest march in British history—but also, to ensure that Gordon Brown would be condemned to reap the harvest of growing public outrage over 10 years of New Labour corruption. His timing was perfect; like the savviest of rats, he jumped ship with enough time to avoid being pulled down by the final vortex of New Labour’s sinking project. He even took the precaution of getting himself a pretend post as ‘Middle East envoy’ so he could be far from the scene when the inquest took place. But as his cronies in the Friends of Israel lobby will know only too well, Tony Blair has been, and remains an integral part of the anaerobic process; so are the rest of the New Labour politicians who have worked hard to secure the grip of neo-liberalism over British politics.

This blogger became a critical observer of British politics at the time when Thatcher was deposed, and has witnessed since then the manner in which her iron fist has been replaced by more and more velvety claws. Thatcher was replaced by the seemingly mild John Major, who exchanged the poll tax for the council tax, a poll tax in disguise—Britain, now more than ever before the land of the landed, still has no property tax. It was also during the ‘mild’ John Major years that the Tories introduced the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, legislation which effectively removed people's right to remain silent, and which marked the beginning of the end of the right to peaceful protest in the UK.

When the effervescently candid Tony Blair came to power, there was a big cheer across the land. Alas, there was much disappointment in store. If anyone had any doubts that more of the same was around the corner of British politics, the Ecclestone affair was a vivid confirmation of what many suspected. The so-called New Labour ‘alliance’ was in fact little more than a Faustian pact between New Labour and big business, and it was not long before New Labour began to emulate the Tories' willingness to introduce legislation to repress any opposition to that same corruption. If the mild Major introduced the Criminal (in)Justice Act, the smiling 'Tony' introduced RIPA 2000. 9/11 then provided the perfect excuse for longer and longer periods of so-called ‘detention without charge’, culminating in the current legislation to introduce what amounts to a 42-day internment period. Where the Tories once stoked a middle class horror of ‘Black’ violence, New Labour now invokes the horror of ‘Muslim’ terror. Both images serve to distract ordinary folk from the emergence of the true enemy within: an increasingly authoritarian corporate managerial class obsessed not just with making money, but with controlling anything that moves, or indeed, anything that fails to move.

New Labour politicians seem to have had a belated moment of self-reflexivity in the recent rebellion over the elimination of the 10% tax rate—under New Labour, the UK now has just two tax brackets, 20% for the poorest, and for the less well paid professionals, and 40% for managers and the rich. For their part, the Tories seem to have had a moment of illumination with David Davies’ resignation over the erosion of civil liberties. But in both cases, the rebellions, if they can really be called that, are too little, too late. Just as Obama's slogan for change dissimulates the fact that his policies are already every bit as far to the right as Cheney's and Bush's, the chameleon Cameron’s likable face and ‘I’m riding my bike!’ earnestness are signs of even worse things to come in the UK.

They are also signs of the fact that the logic of neo-liberalism is now such that every time that more draconian laws are introduced to secure the interests of that unaccountable oligarchy—Crocwatch uses the memorable phrase coined by the Scottish judge, Lord Penrose, to describe the UK’s financial managers—a more and more telegenic leader is put forward to front the process, to make it more palatable. Gordon Brown’s tragedy has been that even if he was the brains behind New Labour’s magnificently refined version of this dynamic, he was not himself telegenic enough to lead from the front. His dour demeanour will now do him no favours as he struggles to remind the baying hounds of neo-liberalism how much they owe him. Perhaps in the autumn somebody will grab his scarlet jacket and pull him down from his neo-liberal charger. If this happens, there will be a brief melee after which the media biting and barking will give way to excited yelps and wagging tails even as a new man rides away in what is looking more and more like a police horse.

Make no mistake: this man—and it will be a man—will himself charge at the English and Welsh crowds with the baton of privatization and the whip of monetarism. He too, will proclaim that we all need to work harder and be healthier even as he encourages us to spy on our neighbours and to smile for the security cameras in every street corner, computer, and mobile telephone.

Crocwatch does not plan to stay around long enough to see this happen. Blessed be all those who think they can gain from the process, who believe they have no choice but to soldier on, or who can simply ignore the gradual onset of the 21st century’s equivalent of fascism.

Gordon Brown is dead; long live neo-liberalism!

Sarah records!

Theres really not much for me to say about it. Founded in 1987, in the UK, the Sarah founders, Clare and Matt wanted "to release 100 of the world's greatest pop-records, to show up all the other labels by doing it properly, and - by means of 7" singles, fanzines, flexidiscs, jigsaws, board-games and inflammatory literature - to raise the moral and political consciousness of the world to such an extent that, when the time came to release that 100th single, global Socialist revolution would be but a mis-timed handclap away. Sarah reached its century in August 1995, and promptly declared its work here done. The world, sadly, rather missed the boat". Over the course of 8 years they managed to put out 99 singles, a few LPs, and some compilations of some of the greatest pop music the world has ever seen. Their roster includes such notable bands as Heavenly, The Sea Urchins, The Field Mice, The Orchids. Their DIY model was both inspiration and a reference point for a countless number of record labels, bands, zines, other diy endeavors. For me the Sarah records story makes me bittersweet and nostalgic for something that I theoretically could have, but of course practically never could have really experienced in person, or at least not have digested in any significant or tangible way.

So yah, basically, some kids did something pretty and good, and we should take something away from that :)

Making a statement on Welfare Reform, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, James Purnell stress

Making a statement on Welfare Reform, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, James Purnell stressed that the welfare state was a vital means to support those who were vulnerable and in need of help. However, he stated that by failing to update the welfare system for the modern age, the principles upon which it was established had been neglected. He suggested in particular that the third principle of the Beveridge report had been neglected, and the system had not been used to help people back into mainstream society. The Secretary of State stated that the new reforms would allow for an 80 per cent employment rate, and would meet the Government's targets for ending child poverty and for equality for the disabled.

He stated that there were 5 main goals. Firstly, the reforms sought to end the system where there was a choice between claiming and working. Mr Purnell explained that there would be work programmes as a sanction for those abusing the system, and a requirement for all claimants to work when they were able; and a requirement for people with drug dependency to seek support, which he argued would increase their capacity to work.

He then explained that the second goal was that nobody would be written off. He stressed that the Government had created a Pathways to Work programme to support people coming off Incapacity Benefit. This benefit was to be fully replaced by the Employment Support Allowance (ESA) between 2010 and 2013 and all existing claimants would be reassessed. All people would be entitled to support, but would be obliged to take work where a doctor advised it, he added.

The third goal was to improve the conditions of the benefit. He explained that specialist services would ensure that anyone that could benefit from access to work could do and that individual budgets would put disabled people in control.

The fourth goal would be to end child benefit with parents on benefits keeping all of their maintenance payments.

Finally, there would be devolution to advisors, providers and communities. He stressed that this would allow greater flexibility and a service that was focused on local needs - Job Centre Plus would have greater opportunity and flexibility to determine how they dealt with their clients.

Mr Purnell confirmed that all the reforms in the Freud report would be fully implemented. These reforms would simplify the benefit system and would abolish income support and move people onto Job Seekers Allowance (JSA), he stated. He went on to say that the conditionality regime would be appropriate for both the JSA and the ESA, and would not change for carers or parents.

He insisted that in consulting further on these proposals the Government would engage with the public, providers and academics.

Tomorrow I'm leaving with my family to go to England and Wales, a mix of tourism and visiting family. I'll be gone for ten days, coming back on August 4, meaning there will be an entire week without posts--my first since starting, which is a pretty good run considering my track record with these sorts of things.

My flight to D.C. is on August 8, so posting may be sporadic after the week I get back from England, depending on the internet situation and how much free time I have. I suspect that uninterrupted blogging will resume in mid-August once The Great Job Hunt truly begins and Misson Drag My Stuff out of Storage in Charleston is initiated.

Au revoir until August! «»

Before I start here's the result:

John Mason (SNP) - 11,277

Margaret Cuuran (Lab) - 10,912

Davena Rankin (Cons) - 1,639

Ian Robertson (LD) - 915

Frances Curran (SSP) - 555

Tricia McLeish (Solidarity)- 512

Dr Eileen Duke (Scottish Greens) - 232

Chris Creighton (Ind) - 67

Hamish Howitt (Freedom 4 Choice)- 65

Up until Last night Labour had held the Glasgow East seat (and it's predecessors) for some 50 years it hardly surprising then that the SNP should be celebrating the 22% swing which delivered the seat to their candidate John Mason by no more than a few hundred votes. That this is a great victory for SNP is beyond question, that the 3rd safest Labour seat in Scotland (26th in the UK) could be lost to the SNP must have die hard Labourites in either a state of panic ... or maybe more likely, based on recent history, a state of denial.

I was listening to David Cairns (who I believe was managing the Labour campaign) on Radio Scotland this morning talking about the defeat and that Labour would be 'listening' to the electorate - haven't we heard that before recently? He was attempting to play up what Labour is doing for the hard-pressed consumer by attempting to paint the autumn freeze in fuel duty as a tax cut (what tosh) and also attempting to make the 10p tax band thing sound like anything other than a complete farce ... to be honest though, he didn't really sound like he believed the rhetoric himself. So why should we, the electorate, believe it either.

I don't think we can hold David Cairns responsible for the loss though, despite the 22% swing, this was never going to be an easy take and the best case scenario was going to be a marginal victory. On the day it didn't go their way, but why, who was responsible?

Whoever it was Labour is now in absolute free-fall, I know that that has been said before, but it is absolutely beyond doubt now. Labour may have one shot at recovery, but it's a long shot and it may well be beyond recovery - more of that in a moment though. It's easy to point to Gordon Brown and say, "it's him", but I actually believe that the problem with Labour is far more deep rooted than that, the 'New Labour' project has utterly failed and the party is now left flailing somewhere Right of Centre, hemorrhaging the Tory support that they courted back in the beginning of their reign, and discovering that their traditional core vote have realised that they have been betrayed by 'the peoples party'.

Gordon Brown Defiant

The question now is, can Gordon Brown survive this setback? His statement this morning was predictably defiant promising that there is:

a brighter future that we can build ...

And that his party must:

Have confidence that not only do we have the right policies but that when the time comes we will be able to persuade the British people.

This sort of thing is to be expected, as is the inevitable reshuffle predicted to occur following the summer recess in which it is expected that Des Brown, Scottish Secretary, will lose his position. I will also be watching for another Brown to be standing down, one G. Brown, and I would be comfortable to suggest he'll be gone before Christmas.

If Gordon Brown doesn't stand down (and possibley even if he does) then we can expect to see a raft of populist and ill conceived policies aimed at minimising Labour losses in the approaching General Election. Ironically, all such actions would do is open them to further attack as the notion that they are prudent in governance is thrown in their collective faces. Yet, this is coming at a time when the Treasury is loosening it's fiscal rules to allow greater borrowing. Not a good combination in my mind ... are we to be paying for the death throws of Labour's current administration through excessive borrowing aimed at saving a few votes?

A Labour Long-Shot

If Labour is to have any real chance at the next General Election Gordon Brown really must be removed. Further than this though, Labour have to take a punt, and not any punt, a punt on a long-shot.

New Labour have failed ... there simply isn't room for two conservative parties. If Labour are to recover they must do so quickly and they must do so by returning their party to the Left, where it belongs, taking onboard socialist values and applying them to the modern era. Labour's core strength was always that it was the party of the masses, of the people at large and yet it is these very people who it has abandoned in pursuit of big business and party funding.

I would go further than this though, I would suggest that this all needs to happen at great pace and that immediately on the back of the change a General Election must be called. Further even than that though I would suggest Labour must fight it as if they were an opposition party! They must acknowledge the mistakes of the past and regard them as the actions of another party, maybe their tag line could be:

Don't blame us, we were hijacked! Vote 'New Old Labour' ...

Ok, maybe that's not going to be it, but you get the idea. The Labour Party must be just that, and drop the 'new'.

Obviously none of this will happen, and it would be a long-shot, but the end of Gordon Brown must be the beginning of a new party for Labour otherwise whatever they do they won't be able to shake off the chains of Blair and Brown.

Personally, I don't care, but the notion of another decade of Conservative rule off the back of a decade of 'Labour branded conservative' rule terrifies me.

Anyway, congratulations to the SNP on a well deserved victory in Glasgow East, may they build on it for the benefit of all Scots, but not least of all those of Glasgow East who have been so neglected. Maybe the SNP are right, maybe ...

... IT'S TIME

Beckham Understands Passion

It was a headline in the Independent, and my heart sank: “Beckham sees Capello’s passion

It was a headline in the Independent, and my heart sank: "Beckham sees Capello's passion as key to England success."

"Passion and commitment" were once an unwanted theme of this blog. Here's a recap of two myths of British football that are wrong but effortlessly ever-present:

"Passion outweighs skill and technique." What we need is/are eleven Stuart Pearces. Well, organization can outweight skill and technique, but veinbusting headless chicken tactics never have. Never. (Stuart Pearce was and is an intelligent and skilful footballer and a student of the game. Eleven Pearces would indeed do us very well, but not solely because he cares about the game: the other elements he brings are far more important).

Fans are too ready to believe that the feelings and emotion they bring to the game are those that are necessary to success in it. Unless, of course, they are urging Rooney to calm down: case closed, M'lud.

So I expected more of the same rubbish from Beckham. After all, we've had plenty of it from John Terry this summer. Who can say this about themselves without revealing far more than they intended?

I'm still very disappointed by it (Terry's penalty miss in the Champions League Final), but I'm a big man and have a big character and it's down for me to deal with it.

But no. Beckham has worn the England armband more recently than Terry. This is a good thing:

Beckham said: "He is passionate about football. He has a total dedication to this sport.

"I think he is one of the coaches who spends most time watching football, talking about football, analysing football – and this shows the passion that he feels for his work.

"He always wants the best for his team and for his players. Now that he is England coach I am sure that things are going to go well.

"He is an ambitious coach who only wants to win – and he is someone with a lot of success behind him."

Yes. Passionate interest, passionate hunger for knowledge, knowhow, technique, an edge. That kind of passion is what we all need in our work and our daily lives. It's what Beckham's shown throughout his career. It's what's famously lacking amongst young English players and too many English coaches, who are swift to assume that they know the game simply because they've been around its English version for a couple of decades.

In one sense, MOTD's employment of ex-players has been illuminating in this regard: it's becoming obvious to more and more fans that players can reach the top and enjoy long, successful careers without gaining any real insight into their craft at all.

For some reason, this applies less to Scotland.

Consider for a moment the changed outlook for British managers when Sir Alex Ferguson retires. At the moment, the UK can claim husbandry of one of the great European coaches. During his career, we could also look to Jock Stein, Don Revie, Brian Clough, Bob Paisley, Bobby Robson, Terry Venables (the last Englishman to take a club to the European Cup Final, over twenty years ago) and perhaps others from that 1965-85 period too.

At one point in the late seventies, all of those men were working in British football management at the same time.

One argument goes that the top four clubs are unwilling to give British managers a chance, and that without the budgets and player access those clubs enjoy, it's hard to make comparisons. This is obviously true. At this rate, David Moyes will turn Everton into a top four club long before a top four opportunity comes his way. There is nothing more he can do at Everton to prove his worth. Mark Hughes, too, looks the part, although after Sven's experience at City, he has a hard season ahead of him. No one doubts that Martin O'Neill should have been England manager in 2006 any more, and few did then.

But beware the examples of McClaren, Curbishley and Allardyce. Unless something dramatic happens, these three careers, the brightest England managers of their generation, have already peaked without their showing anything other than that their doubters were correct. I feel some sympathy for Sam Allardyce. I feel some respect for Steve McClaren, and wish him luck in Holland. Curbishley's been a manager at the top level in England for a very long time without suggesting that his teams can ever be comfortable fighting for honours.

No, this is a generation to pass over. But there are positive things ahead. We are constantly exposed, in England, to the best players, many of the best coaches and, of course, to our relative shortcomings. Year by year, the need to train coaches properly climbs further up the agenda, if slowly. According to Wenger, a new generation of British youngsters is coming through who compare to any in Europe.

If the players are there, where are the coaches?

Our best hope is that they are hidden. Alf Ramsey coached all of one season in the First Division before becoming England manager. What price now that Simon Clifford/Sir Clive Woodward team?

Ten years now since this, though:
