Hello everyone, I'm back from my vacation and there's another discussion to go at.

The past few years, CDs and LPs are getting more and more rare. Everything's turning into digital format. iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, eMusic (and also Amazon & CDbaby) and many other sites are doing a great job presenting us with these digital MP3s, but sometimes I miss holding the CD in my hands, reading through the booklet and reading the liner notes. And I can appreciate some creative artwork too.

I'm a child of the CD age of course, and even though I like LP (vinyl) even better, I've adapted to CDs because they're just more practical. And I'm sure, eventually the same will happen with the digital format. I'll get used to it. And in a way I'm already adapting to it. Well, it's not like it's really a choice, and when possible and I can afford it, I still try to get the CD too. Though it might be even more as a nostalgic thing or as a collecter's item.

I'm curious as to where you stand on the hardcopy (vinyl, cd) vs. the digital music. Are you still buying CDs? Or did you convert to the digital age? All these things have pros and cons, I'm just curious as to what you like best.

For me it's probably CDs, since it's the middle way. It's still practicle and you still have the hardcopy music with artwork and booklets. And a CD in a CD case to put in your collection.

eMusic, the MP3-only music seller, is trying to break out into offering video, CEO David Pakman told

eMusic, the MP3-only music seller, is trying to break out into offering video, CEO David Pakman told NewTeeVee on Friday. But the company would only do so if networks and studios would agree to let it sell DRM-free MPEG-4 files.

eMusic has built a good business selling music subscriptions without ever signing major labels, however as more mainstream sellers like iTunes and Amazon now sell MP3s, eMusic's pioneering work may be done. Personally, with my tastes and especially since my harddrives seem to die all the time, eating my iTunes purchases, I'm quite happy with my eMusic subscription.

Pakman said he's looking specifically at adding television shows to his catalog, given the economics of selling content online. But there aren't many indie TV shows, so eMusic is going to have to get the big guys on board to make this work. Reflecting on the music industry, Pakman said, "We don't think networks and studios have felt the pain yet," so he estimated it will be at least a year to get such a service off the ground. However Pakman was optimistic about such market forces coming to bear, given declining DVD sales, peer-to-peer file-sharing, and the ease of downloading streamed content. Still, it'll be a tough row to hoe.

Update: An eMusic spokesperson clarifies,

"Our primary goal is to license 'long tail' television programs – shows that were cancelled long ago, didn’t make it on the air, and of course classic and obscure programs that were well-loved when they were on the air, e.g. The Rockford Files or The Magician with Bill Bixby. We are not aiming for Lost and Desperate Housewives. We believe that there is a market for these programs with our target audience (adults age 25+) that can generate incremental revenue for television studios."

Back in February I discussed eMusic's failure to provide more information about the artists whose music it sells, and suggested some ways it could do better. Now Fortune reports on eMusic's attempt to do just that. This is gratifying, to say the least (though I doubt my post had any influence on eMusic's plans).

It will be interesting to see how well the new eMusic web site features match up with my and others' visions of what eMusic could do in this regard. In my original post I wrote that

A concerted approach to provide comprehensive context would combine information from lots of sources: eMusic-exclusive reviews, articles, and interviews, subscriber reviews, relevant message board posts (e.g., linked to from album and artist pages), Wikipedia articles, music blog posts, reviews from multiple sources, news stories, artist and label web sites and other pages (e.g., on MySpace), unofficial fan sites and forums, and so on.

Compare that with the Fortune article:

Let's say you are a fan of Arcade Fire. You can already read quite a bit about the critically-acclaimed Canadian cult band on its eMusic album pages. Now eMusic will add a wealth of content from the Web 2.0 universe: the band's Wikipedia entry, pictures from Flickr, and videos of Arcade Fire concerts from YouTube.

When providing context the more the better from my point of view. If eMusic adds context only from Wikipedia, Flickr, YouTube, and other major sites then it will be nice, but I think also a missed opportunity. Here are some key questions:

How (if at all) will the new site leverage the wealth of user-generated content on the existing eMusic message boards?

To what extent will the new site provide access to long tail content beyond the major web 2.0 sites, for example, posts in music blogs that discuss artists and releases available through eMusic?

Speaking of blogs, will eMusic's own 17 Dots blog be better integrated into the main eMusic site?

Will the new site provide official mechanisms for labels and artists to make their own web content available (e.g, through links to band web sites)?

Will the new site allow eMusic subscribers themselves to contribute content, either through direct wiki-style editing of pages or through some other mechanism?

I began my last post with a quote from Ian Rogers (now of Topspin), and I'll repeat the most salient part of it: iTunes is a (mostly) context-free content experience and the Web is a (mostly) content-free context experience. Whoever puts the two together wins. Could this be a winning strategy for eMusic? I'm certainly looking forward to what next Tuesday brings.

Anyone who knows me is well aware of how big a fan I am of Rhapsody. Â It's one of my essential tools for digesting and discovering new music. Â The music subscription service model has always made a lot of sense to me and I believe is a model we're going to see a lot more of. Â Especially as more and more artists attempt to circumvent labels and go direct to fans (with the help of technology like Topspin). Â

After all, why wouldn't you want to pay $12/month to access a virtual unlimited amount of music - anywhere, anytime.  It's beautiful.  Especially when leveraged through the Sonos Digital Music System (in which Rhapsody is already integrated).  I have an ongoing Rhapsody playlist of new music that I add to whenever I hear or read about a new artist.  Then I just queue up the playlist and listen to it whenever I'm at work or futzing around the house.  With the combination of Rhaspody and Sonos, listening to music is no longer a dedicated form of entertainment. Â

Finally, Rhapsody has added an MP3 download component, without all the DRM (Digital Rights Management) hassles like Apple iTunes. Â (Which means when you download a track or album you can do whatever you want with it - no proprietary formats, limited sharing, etc.) Â I still love eMusic and inSound for their great selection of Indie music. Â But I find that Rhapsody is the ideal platform for most of my music research. Â I'm very happy about this new MP3 service and hope that the the next iteration with include the option for monthly download bundles as part of my subscription. Â :)

Probably the single biggest contributor to having a good time at a live performance is familiarity with the music. The Pitchfork Music Festival grasps this point - as it has for the last couple of years, they've teamed up with eMusic to provide free downloads of songs by artists who'll be performing. If you plan on attending, it's a great way to familiarize yourself with the bands you may not know. And if you can't make it, it's a terrific way to get a taste of the always well-curated festival. Ignore the pissy comments - there are some great songs there. Try Mission of Burma's "Academy Fight Song," Animal Collective's "Grass," and Apple in Stereo's "Energy" for a start.

...is playing, and I just realized my stupidity after the last post. Of course you can change the tagline under the blog's title. Why didn't I think of that?

Well, eventually, I did.

But the fact still remains, that the whole blogging thing may just be a Catch-22. There's little motivation to post anything if there's no feedback, but there's no feedback if we don't post anything.

I could bitch and moan some more, but I'm in a much better mood thanks to all the music I'm putting on my computer. I got an eMusic account (www.emusic.com) yesterday... one of the best things I've ever done! I love it! Plus, I got 50 free downloads right off the bat. Could it get any better? The only slightly sad thing is that they don't have any really mainstream artists. That's ok, because I'm not that interested in much mainstream music because, frankly, it's crappy. But I do wish I could get some of the classics, like Elvis... because it's still way cheaper than a CD... and let's face it, the mainstream artists don't need or really deserve all the money we'd be giving them if we bought their CDs. The off-the-beaten-track artists do, and they're not profiting much from this whole eMusic thing, but it's better than LimeWire for sure.

I wasn't against LimeWire until I wrote the article below. Even now, I can't really pinpoint exactly why I don't really approve of it. If I need a song and don't have time to purchase it, I'll still get it from LimeWire (usually only if the artist is mainstream, or if I already have at least one CD by the artist). Yeah, I guess it's still a little hypocritical. What can I say; I just love my music and will go to any lengths to get it...

So, I leave for California tomorrow (well, technically Phoenix, and then drive up) and I'm just totally stoked. I just hope all this music syncs to my iPod in time, because it was really slow yesterday. The BEST thing in the world would be to see some celebrities there.

I also can't wait to go to school. Absurd, I know... but if you only knew Evergreen! It's fantastic.

I'm out. for now...

(visit this link today to get this song)

Today's free song, "Sunny Day" by Gwendolyn Sanford is from the TV Series Weeds.

I must say, this song is catchy, but the singer is singing annoyingly on purpose, which is slightly unforgivable. As the background to a TV series, it works... as long as it's not played too much.

On the upside, the craziness is refreshing, and it's hard not to smile at the kazoo solo. Overall, though? Not worth keeping around for too long.

Every day eMusic releases one of the songs in their catalog (usually a fairly unknown artist's track) for free. If you download their toolbar (IE only), there's a link on there. Otherwise, visit this link every day to get the song.

Today's song, "I Can't See Straight" by Woodhands is a real hit with me. Which is quite rare--usually stuff is free because A) It's not gonna sell, or B) the creators want to make a splash. More often A) than B).

The song starts with an almost annoying guitar drive, but quickly brings in drums, synth bass and melody. This creates a emo/electro sound that I like. I have a weak spot for that sort of thing.

The singer on this song is definitely not a good one. He's fairly flat in the things he sings, but that could almost be deliberate, because it works quite well--there's not many lyrics in the song, much less verses.

Overall, this is a very good edgy-electronic/alt song, very likeable.

Is anyone else having playback problems with iTunes? Do a search on Google, and you'll find the answer to be "Hell YEAH!" I'm a big supporter of Apple products and services, but I'm also a fan of options in all facets of my life, especially with media. It all started a few months back while reading an article in Rolling Stone about someone (or someones..) who had become fed up with the poor audio quality of Beatles CD's and decided to rip FLAC files to their computer from their collection of pristine Beatles vinyl.

To make a very long story short, they put the files on the internet so other people could get them (search "Purple Chick Megaupload") and I went after it. I didn't know what a FLAC file was at the time, but I did know iTunes wouldn't play it, so I had to find something that would. In enters Songbird, an open-source media players from some of the guys who made Winamp and the Yahoo Music Engine. It not only handles FLAC files but also MP3 (of course), AAC, WMA, AIFF, MIDI, Apple Lossless, yadda yadda plus files with that pesky DRM crap. And the really great advantage is that since it's open-source, it's cross platform and developer friendly (not to mention free of course) and there are a plethora of extensions you can download to make it even cooler.

There's an extension to display your album art much in the same way iTunes Cover Flow does, you can scrobble your tracks to Last.fm (if your cool like me) and you can even download an extension that imports your entire iTunes library into Songbird. It doesn't play video, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

It's also visually customizable, with a variety of great skins. You can even make it look exacltly like iTunes if you so choose. There's a built in web browser, eMusic compatibility (via another extension) and you can even search for DRM-free MP3's with the SkreemR shortcut/bookmark on the sidebar.

Songbird is a great program for open-source purists and the anti-corprate big business haters out there who would rather throw their grandma in front of a train than download anything from Apple or Microsoft. (I love my grandma dearly and always protect her from trains, but a small part of me is with you.) It also seems to correct the skipping problem a lot of my tracks seem to be having in iTunes as of late. (The point at meant to get to in the opening.)

Check it out, (most of you probably have) if you hate it, its not like you paid for it.
