Diving Into...

I started using Emacs as a Linux IDE for a C++ project. At that moment I was also using IntelliJ IDEA for my personal Java project and wondered if I could have a comparable environment for C++ under Linux. My first try was to use Eclipse with CDT, but the experience was frustrating---CDT was slower than IDEA and in addition uncomfortable. The main reason for slowness was that CDT tried to do honest parsing of all our project and imported headers. Also it was failing miserably on some non-trivial parts due to high complexity of C++ itself.

Obviously, I needed something more lightweight, albeit not very primitive. By that time I already had had a positive experience of Windows development using only FAR's built-in editor accompanied by some plugins, mainly Colorer and AutoCompletion. So, what about simple yet powerful programmer's editors for Unix?

As everybody knows, there are lots of Unix-based editors that real programmers use, of which two can be viewed as IDEs: Emacs and Vim. I chose Emacs based on editors comparison done by Eric Raymond in "The Art of Unix programming" book and Steve Yegge's evangelical posts on Emacs (see links in the last section). Mainly, I didn't like the idea of interaction modes in Vim. As Jef Raskin said in his book "The Humane Interface": "Modes are a significant source of errors, confusion, unnecessary restrictions, and complexity in interfaces"

This made my choice. So I grabbed "Learning GNU Emacs" and "GNU Emacs Manual" and dove into. It took just about an hour do learn the basic stuff. What amazed me first in Emacs is the idea of ubiquitous text buffers. Everything in Emacs is a text buffer. Thus, you can trivially transfer contents between them and use the same commands for editing and navigation. And the greatest benefit is that you can use search just everywhere. This is much more productive as opposed to "common" IDEs, where you have tree and list views, pop-up boxes, wizards and other stuff, all having different interaction behavior and abilities.

The Real Project

Having a confidence that Emacs is really useable and convenient, I started using it for a C++ project. Again, I was pleasantly surprised how good is Emacs at C++ coloring and indenting. Then, I attached etags, and this covered 90% of my auto-completion needs. Really, you don't need to do a sophisticated parsing of source code in order to do good enough auto-completion.

So, using Emacs, I was able to do comfortable editing of C++ sources, Makefiles, SQL files, shell scripts and all other stuff that we used in the project. It was also easy to compile the project and navigate back to errors in the source code, do project-wide searching and perform non-trivial renamings with regexp search and replace. I was also talking to our version control system from Emacs. And all this by means of text buffers.

Extensions, Extensions, Extensions!

In parallel to my main project, I was also studying functional programming in Haskell and Scheme. Immediately I found excellent Emacs editor extensions for both (in Emacs, extensions are called "modes", but they are not those evil interaction modes that are used in Vim) [Note: I've seen people complaining that Emacs' modes are "evil modes" too, because your keyboard gestures are dependent on the current mode. That's correct. But in Emacs mode is connected to a buffer, and you know in what buffer you are now. While in Vim, you switch mode, while staying in the same editing window. I find this confusing, and other people too.] This is what really amuses me in Emacs---name any programming language, version control system, feature of shell, whatever---and you always can find an extension to Emacs which allows you to interact with it. Really, "good ol' C-x M-c M-butterfly..." in action!

For examples of Emacs extensions varieties, take a look at EmacsWiki. Thousands of people are publishing their extensions and short code snippets in Emacs Lisp that can solve any particular task. What's really amazing is the wise Emacs internal architecture that allows those myriads of extensions to work together. Eclipse tries hard to achieve this, and the concept of plugin extension points is really similar to "hooks" in Emacs, but... But it's almost impossible to write a useful Eclipse extension with just a few lines of Java code---too many low-level overhead. While in Emacs, you just write several lines of Emacs Lisp code and it works, and you can publish it, and everybody can just paste your code, and now it works for them, too (well, of course, I'm idealizing---but often this is true).

You'll never finish learning Emacs---it is a really deep barrel of extensions. I always find something new in it. For example, here are my recent discoveries: the windmove package that allows you to navigate between tiled editing buffers easily; mmm for text coloring and indenting in mixed-language files like html with javascript, jsp, C++ withinline assembler, etc; good ol' ediff that has features of highlighting changes inside line and dynamically re-comparing files as long as you editing one of them.

And these are really well-known and obvious extensions, for using Emacs as an editor. But I know people who literally live in Emacs. They read mail and news in it, organize their time and projects, surf the Web, write their blog posts, chat using IM extensions and use many-many more features including awesome Emacs' interface for visually impaired people.

How Should I Start?

So, what can you read to study Emacs? You can begin with inspiring Steve's articles: "My .emacs file", "Tour de Babel" (here search for "Lisp"), "Effective Emacs", "Saving Time"; read introductory pages of EmacsWiki; take a look at blogs dedicated to Emacs: minor emacs wizardry and M-x all-things-emacs; and don't forget about built-in "info" system in Emacs itself.

As for the books, you can grab Richard Stallman's GNU Emacs Manual for free, and read through "Learning GNU Emacs" and "GNU Emacs Pocket Reference".

And the last tip: as Emacs is very keyboard-intensive, the first thing that you need is a good cheatsheet for keyboard combos. Although I've seen many over the Web, the one that I like the most is that I made myself. Here it is.

Happy emacsing!

Although I finally opted to blog in WordPress by using the Weblogger, I did go through all the shen

Although I finally opted to blog in Wordpress by using the Weblogger, I did go through all the shenanigans that you have to do in order to post to Blogger with emacs. I have to tell you that there wasn't a whole lot of documentation outhere to get it done so I'll try to do so right here. I'm supposing that you already know how to do some basic customizations to emacs. Either way, I'll try to put in here as much as possible. Ok, so let's start.

First, if you search on the web for information on how to do it, you'll find that there used to be a atom-blogger.el for the emacs but ever ince that time (around 2006) the Blogger API has gone through many hanges, so that .el is now obsolete. What you have to do now is ownload the g-client, which is part of emacspeak, Oh! and by the way, id I mention that you have to be using Linux? This thing uses both curl nd xsltproc so you have to be using Linux. Ok, so you're in Linux great.

Now extract the g-clien to some folder preferably in a folder like '/.emacs.d/g-client' to makethings easier. Now you have to byte-compile verything so while in that folder in the shell, type 'make' and that should do it. Depending on how lucky you're (I wasn't lucky) you'll have to create a ile g-cus-load.el and put the next elisp in it:

(provide 'g-cus-load)
(provide 'gblogger)
(provide 'g-loaddefs)

Ok, what we have next to do is add the next lines to your .emacs, the first one is for the load-path, and the other some requires so that the damn thing works.

(add-to-list 'load-path "/YOURHOME/.emacs.d/g-client")
(load-library "g")
(require 'g)
(require 'g-auth)
(require 'g-autogen)
(require 'gblogger)
(require 'gcal)
(require 'g-cus-load)
(require 'g-loaddefs)
(require 'greader)
(require 'g-utils)
(require 'json)

I don't think that most of the requires are a needed but anyway, having done that you either M-x eval-buffer your .emacs or restart emacs. By ow, the g-client should be loaded to your emacs providing you with all he Google services (calendar, reader, blogger, your mom...).

The next thing to do, is M-x Customize-gro p gblogger, you put in there your user:ZZZZZ@gmail.com and save for future sessions.

...and we are done. Almost. For a new post, you have to M-x blogger-new-entry. It is going to ask you for an URL. You have to rovide it this way: http://XXXXXXX.blogspot.com/atom.xml

It should be working for now. Although it isn't for me. For some reason hen editing your post you couldn't either post in spanish (due to the ccents) nor in japanese. My theory is that this g-client is part of the emacspeak project which focuses on helping blind people use a computer so maybe there is no need for international support somehow. But I can see it working for all the English speaking people out there.

Hope that it works for you. Good luck.

<b> APARECE EL HTML EN EL POST </b>

<strong> hey, it doesn't work... </strong>

load-path
en el archivo .emacs. Por ejemplo:
(add-to-list 'load-path "/home/wqs2011/.emacs.d/site-lisp")

If your goal is to have a v

... Is, it turns out, much easier than it was the last time I tried.

If your goal is to have a version of Emacs which acts as much like an OS X app as it possibly can, then you should download Aquamacs Emacs. If your goal is to have an Emacs which acts like Emacs, but plays nicely with OS X - files can be dragged and dropped onto its Dock icon and onto its windows, text can be copied and pasted easily between Emacs and other OS X applications - then it's not terribly hard to get vanilla GNU Emacs to do just that.

Aquamacs Emacs

Aquamacs Emacs has nice pretty toolbar icons, pretty Safari-like tabs, and (by default, but this can be turned off easily) opens each buffer in its own window. You can use Mac keyboard shortcuts, e.g., Command-C to copy and Command-V to paste.

I use Emacs on multiple platforms. GNU Emacs 22.2.1 and Aquamacs Emacs 1.4 contain different versions of different packages (e.g., GNU Emacs opens XML files using sgml-mode.el; Aquamacs opens XML files using nxml-mode.el). That can make it difficult to share a single ~/.emacs file between different platforms, or at least it requires that you perform the same customization in two different ways (e.g., modifying nxml-child-indent on Aquamacs, and sgml-basic-offset on GNU Emacs). Aquamacs also does some unexpected things which I never did get around to disabling: for example, help windows open in new frames.

GNU Emacs

Installing GNU Emacs is a wee bit more difficult than installing Aquamacs Emacs. These steps assume that you know how to install software from source on a UNIX-like OS. GNU Emacs 22.2.1 compiles from source just fine on Mac OS 10.5.4 Intel, and may work on other Mac platforms.

First, install the XCode Developer Tools. Next, download and extract the GNU Emacs source. In a UNIX shell, navigate to the directory you extracted the source into. Run ./configure. These are the options I used:

./configure --prefix=/Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources --exec-prefix=/Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS --enable-carbon-app

The --enable-carbon-app option is the one you need to enable if you want Emacs to have a dock icon and allow drag-and-drop and clipboard interaction with other apps. The other two options, the --prefix and --exec-prefix, are optional, but if you use them, everything you need to run Emacs will be placed into the Emacs.app bundle, and the next time you want to install Emacs, you just need to copy that Emacs.app bundle into the /Applications folder. Next, run make and make install, and you're done.

You also have the option, although I didn't try it, of compiling Emacs so that it runs under X11. I spent way too long using XEmacs under X11, with hinky clipboard interaction with Aqua apps, with ugly fonts, with no drag and drop between the Finder and XEmacs' windows, and I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore.

Using non-antialiased Monaco

Most Mac text editors - XCode, BBEdit/TextWrangler, TextMate - are configured by default to use non-antialiased Monaco. In my humble opinion, this is much more legible than antialiased Monaco or any other font I've tried on OS X. Both Emacs and Aquamacs enable antialiasing by default. To disable it, add a line like this to your ~/.emacs file*:

(setq mac-allow-anti-aliasing nil)

Many faces use bold or italic, or (on Aquamacs Emacs, especially) variable-width fonts like Lucida Grande, which look terrible with antialiasing disabled. The next step is to use customize-face to modify each of these faces so that they are not bold or italic, and so that they use Monaco. You can get to customize-face by typing M-x customize-face, or by clicking on Options in the menu bar, then clicking Customize Emacs > Specific Face...

Opening a file in a running instance of Emacs from a UNIX shell

You don't need to use <del datetime="00">gnuserv</del> Emacs server and <del datetime="00">gnuclient</del> emacsclient in order to open a file in a running instance of Emacs, in either Aquamacs or GNU Emacs - but that option is available. Instead, run one of these commands:

open -a /Applications/Emacs.app /path/to/file
open -a /Applications/Aquamacs\ Emacs.app /path/to/file

This shorter variant may also work:

open -a Emacs /path/to/file
open -a Aquamacs\ Emacs /path/to/file

* Aquamacs Emacs reads your ~/.emacs file, and it also reads its own customization file, ~/Library/Preferences/Aquamacs Emacs/Preferences.el. You can also customize the variable, by typing M-x customize-variable RETURN mac-allow-anti-aliasing.

Lately, I’ve started digging more and more into Rails, preparing for the start of a Rails powe

Lately, I've started digging more and more into Rails, preparing for the start of a Rails powered project. Although there are some IDEs offering decent Rails support(namely NetBeans, Komodo and Aptana Studio) I have always preferred the comfort of Emacs for various reasons. So naturally I embarked on a quest to setup a suitable environment for Rails development in Emacs. After a couple of days of searching and evaluating possible solutions I finally set up a wordy environment. It consists of a couple of components - ruby-mode, ruby-electric, nxhtml-mode and rinari.

As you probably have guessed by now ruby-mode provides support for editing ruby source files. The mode is pretty feature complete and under active development, headed by none other than Matz himself. You can get it from the ruby svn repository. ruby-electric provides auto insertion of closing braces, quotes, ends, etc. It can also the found in the ruby repo. Instructions how to setup both modes can be found here. Although many people recommend adding pabbrev(a mode which provides auto-completion) to the setup, I don't recommend it - I find the mode mostly annoying and stick to the old school dumb auto-completion with M-/ .

nxhtml-mode is a pretty comprehensive package for web development in general. We need it for its excellent support for erubis templates(.rhtml, .erb.html) and of course xhtml and css.

rinari is a mode for Rails development - it contains rich functionality such as the ability to easily navigate between models, views and controllers in a Rails application amongst other features. Instructions how to set up rinari together with nxhtml-mode can be found on rinari's home page.

It's always a good idea to add ecb(the Emacs code browser) to the mix, though this is entirely optional.

I hope you enjoy this setup and it helps boost your Rails productivity in Emacs!

Ok, so I thought of using the weblogger.el extension for the almighty
emacs to post in this blog. Works charmfully, I mean it is great indeed
but there is only a little problem that I can't seem to resolve given my
limited elisp abilities: whenever i try to give a little bit of format
to my post, the HTML escapes and it just isn't working. <STRONG> It's not working
</STRONG>. I became obsessed with this problem during the last two days
and I've finally decided to quit using this extension and resume blogging with Flock
until I find a better extension for blogging within Emacs. :'( It seemed
so useful...

Its been 10 days on my sabbatical[1][2]. I have done reasonably well during the first week, but now

Its been 10 days on my sabbatical[1][2]. I have done reasonably well during the first week, but now its getting on my nerves. I have realized how addicted I am to chat, IRC and the Internet. I have to soon find some remedies for this.
Well, here is the first step. I approached ELIZA[3] (or Doctor Fill, that's actually the emacs mode) , the Emacs Psychotherapist to help me. An enjoyable chat this one! ;)
ELIZA (Doctor Fill) abbreviated as DF (pun intended, for those who get it)

DF: I am the psychotherapist. Please, describe your problems. Each time
you are finished talking, type RET twice.

Hi. Nice meeting you.

DF: How do you do? What brings you to see me?

I am obviously not fine, otherwise I would not have been here.
I have realized I am addicted to the internet and want you to help
me.

DF: Why do you say that?

I say that because you are a doctor.

DF: Is it because because I am a doctor that you came to me?

Isn't that pretty obvious?

DF: Can you elaborate on that?

Yes, I did come to see you because you are a doctor. Now, I regret it.

DF: Does it bother you that I am a doctor now you regret it?

I don't understand your question.

DF: Earlier you said because I am a doctor?

Yes, because you are a doctor I came to you.

DF: When did you first know that I am a doctor you came to me?

I knew about you, when I first fiddled around with Emacs around an
year ago.

DF: What happened when you first fiddled around with emacs around a year
ago?

I loved it, thoroughly! But for a beginner like me it was difficult to
get along. I stopped using it.

DF: Is the fact that for a beginner like you it was difficult to get along
you stopped using it the real reason?

I think that along with my laziness to stick with the learning was the
real reason

DF: Does the fact that along with your laziness to stick with the learning
was the real reason explain anything else?

It does not explain anything else to me.

DF: Maybe your plans have something to do with this.

What plans? I donot have any plans.

DF: What makes you believe what plans you donot have any plans?

If I had plans, I would have been executing them.

DF: You mentioned that I am a doctor now you regret it?

Yes, because you seemed stupid initially. Now you seem to be making
some sense.

DF: Are you sure I seemed stupid initially now I seem to be making some
sense?

Yes I am pretty sure.

DF: Is it because of your life that you are going through all this?

Obviously. Because I am alive I am going through all this.

DF: Is it because you are alive you are going through all this that you
came to me?

Yes.

DF: I see... Well, are you sure that this is so?

Yes. I don't think there is emacs in the hell.

DF: I would appreciate it if you would watch your tongue!

Oh! so emacs is in the hell too! is it in the heavan too?

DF: Emacs? Hah! Perhaps you could continue.

I thought only mortals used Emacs. Do others use it too?

DF: Have you been positive?

Yes. I always thought Emacs is only for the homo sapiens.

DF: I believe you have inhibitions with emacs.

No. I love emacs.
But it isn't suitable for Gods and Demons

DF: Are you annoyed that it is not suitable for gods and demons?

No

DF: Why not?

I am neither of them. That's why

DF: Please, continue.

I am a human and I can use emacs. Others donot need it. I am not annoyed

DF: Have you been annoyed often?

Ocassionally

DF: Go on, don't be afraid.

I am not. I have been ocassionally annoyed, more often with myself
than others.

DF: What causes you to be annoyed?

Presently, I am annoyed with myself for being addicted to the Internet
and may be for chatting with you too.

DF: Do you really think you are annoyed?

Affirmative

DF: I need a little more detail please.

Yes. I am a little annoyed with myself.

DF: Are you annoyed often?

Ocassionally. Why do you repeat questions?

DF: When did you first know that do me repeat questions?

Long Long ago, when I first used Emacs.

DF: What makes you think long long ago when you first used emacs?

I saw you repeat questions.

DF: Is it because of the people you hang around with that you say you saw
me repeat questions?

Yes.

DF: Yes, hmmm... so, why do you say this is so?

I am leaving. You are being too repititive. Goodbye!

DF: What makes you believe because I am a doctor?

Goodbye!

DF: My secretary will send you a bill.

Bill? You did not help me much.

DF: How do you reconcile problems at school?

Goodbye!

DF: Bye bye.

Bye

DF: See ya.

See ya.

DF: Are you sure that see me?

Yes, when in trouble

DF: What would happen if in trouble?

I will see ya

DF: Earlier you said I am a doctor you came to me?

Yes, now also I say that.

DF: You're being a bit brief, would you please go into detail.

Goodbye!

DF: Ok, talk to you some other time.

bye!

DF: Talk to you later.

On a more serious note, the Internet has become an *Integral* part of my life. I do sometimes think, a bit too much, but then.... the internet is "The Internet"!

I've been runing emacs off of a weird server. I was running x on cygwin and had used "xhost MYSERVER" to pick up the emacs session. Cool. The version of Emacs 20.7.2, though. Anyways... I get there and backspace and the delete key both work by backing over the previous character. I wanted to make the delete key "eat" the next character. This should be easy to fix, right? Doh! It took me more than an hour. Below is my lame trial and error process of finding a lame solution. I haven't had this much fun since I had to figure out how to enter a carriage return!

C-h b -- list key bindings
C-s del -- search for del... C-s to go forward, C-r to go backward

C-d runs the command delete-char
which is an interactive built-in function
DEL runs the command delete-backward-char
which is an interactive built-in function

C-x C-e the elisp code lines to execute them.

[Waste time trying many wrong ways to global-set-key the delete key, until....]

runs but doesn't change behavior:

(global-set-key [del] 'delete-char)

look-- hitting del does not make the "hello" text

(global-set-key [del] "hello")

this works! but... now backspace works like delete! Argh!

(global-set-key "\d" 'delete-char)

fix it back:

(global-set-key "\d" 'delete-backward-char)

Uh... both of them are bound to DEL.

Problem must not be in EMACS. But wait... the weirdo shell that lanched EMACS knows the difference!

Can EMACS tell the difference between DEL and BACKSPACE?

press backspace , press delete
then hit C-h l to view the lossage buffer.
If you see something like
backspace deletechar

It can!!! Execute this:

(global-set-key [backspace] 'delete-backward-char)
(global-set-key [deletechar] 'delete-char)

Still doesn't work right....

(define-key function-key-map [delete] nil)
(global-set-key [delete] 'delete-char)

Now delete is dead! (Backspace still works.)

Can't get it back with this:

(define-key function-key-map [delete] [delete])

Hmm.... Maybe.... Aha! A lame hack:

(define-key function-key-map [delete] [F20])
(global-set-key [F20] 'delete-char)

This works! I did it! It only took an hour and a half! Argh!

This post, is a different one in a couple of ways.
Firstly, I posted this from within emacs! I'm using the w3m browser within emacs to post this. I've started using (trying to use) emacs again. Hope to keep at it longer this time.
Secondly, I wish to inform junta about my sabbatical for a couple of weeks. I have decided not to use IM/IRC/SocialNetworking sites for the next couple of weeks. [00:00:00 IST 6th Jul'08 to 23:59:59 IST 19th Jul'08] I will, of course, be using mail and will also blog if and when I feel like. This is an experiment triggered by a few ideas from Chaitu[1]and my own holiday lifestyle analysis. (Also Chaitu has volunteered to join me.) Hope to make it through and also get some valid, interesting results out of the experiment.

Update: Firemacs add-on for firfox is very useful. I couldn't get a decent browser for emacs that could open gmail, so I'm using Firefox with the Firemacs add-on to compose my mail. Its absolutely amazing. Believe me! [Jul 6, 2008]

Nice afternoon we're having. Just barely in the 70s I'm guessing. I'm about to take off for Kingston.

Put emacs on my fast computer yesterday. Tried to use on Redhat 6.1 quite a while ago. At that time I couldn't even figure out how to exit the program; had to just turn off the computer to get out of it--ha ha. In this version I found the tutorial and that makes it a whole lot easier. It is pretty darn neat. I'm going to get into a bit more when I get some spare time...

I am using Emacs org-model to plan my daily work. Currently, I use it to give me overview of my daily prioritized tasks. Right now I can use the following setting to enter notes for certain state change of a task:

#+SEQ_TODO: TODO(t) ACTIVE(a@) STARTED(s!) WAITING(w@/!) DELEGATED(g@/!) APPT(p@/!) | DONE(d@) DEFERRED(f@) CANCELED(c@)

However, I am having a hard time to get repeated tasks to reschedule when I mark them as DONE. For example, given the following task:

** TODO Pay Citi Driver's Edge Card
SCHEDULED: <2008-06-27 Fri +m -1d> DEADLINE: <2008-07-02 Wed +m -1d>

When I marked it as DONE using c-u c-c c-t, I was prompted to enter notes for the state change. I entered

Scheduled to pay on July 11.

According to org manual, I expected the task to be changed into something like

** TODO Pay Citi Driver's Edge Card
SCHEDULED: <2008-07-27 Sun +m -1d> DEADLINE: <2008-08-02 Sat +m -1d>
- State "DONE" [2008-06-28 Sat 21:58] \\
Scheduled to pay on July 11.

However, what I got was

** DONE Pay Citi Driver's Edge Card
SCHEDULED: <2008-06-27 Fri +m -1d> DEADLINE: <2008-07-02 Wed +m -1d>
- State "DONE" [2008-06-28 Sat 21:58] \\
Scheduled to pay on July 11.

The schueduled time and deadline are not updated, and the state is not TODO.

I have followed the manual and kept the scheduled and deadline with the same repeat information. I wonder if the setting for log notes when changing the state has caused the problem. I will try not log notes at all later and see if the problem disappears.

I’m using Emacs/X11 on cygwin as my main editor (when stuck on work’s machine) and Emacs

I'm using Emacs/X11 on cygwin as my main editor (when stuck on work's machine) and Emacs 22's Unicode support really rocks. However, getting it to pass unicode between the kill ring and Windows /X11 clipboard doesn't work out-of-the-box (mainly because Emacs thinks it's on a Unix host). The fix is easy though:

Set your MULE selection coding system to use the same unicode coding system that Windows employs
(UTF-16BE I think. Or it could be UTF-16LE, will need more trial and error)

How? Use MULE's set-selection-coding-system function (interactively, it's bound to C-x RET x). You could put this in your .emacs:

(set-selection-coding-system utf-16be-dos)

Once you've done this, then cut/paste of unicode works wonderfully, and you can wax lyrical about your Façade design patterns in your UML editor, or your web browser (like I just did: type C-x 8 , c to get a ç, and then copy/paste from emacs to firefox...)

(defun bf-pretty-print-xml-region (begin end)
"Pretty format XML markup in region. You need to have nxml-mode

Indeed, why isn't this included with NXML-mode? Ah well, at least my problem's solved for the simple use-case of opening a machine-generated XML file and wanting to visually parse it...

Benjamin's blog has lots of useful Emacs stuff. Worth a read.

I found myself needing a simple way to format some xml. The xml I had was all shoved onto one line which is pretty impossible to read.

I thought, nxml-mode should be able to do this, but checking the function names provided with nxml didn'tyield anything useful as far as I could tell. So I thought tidy should be able to do this.
