It appears Elvis was always the King of Rock.

An 1,800-year old Roman bust that looks strikingly like Elvis Presley is set to go on the auction block in London.

The hunka hunka chiseled stone is a marble acroterion - a carved head from a sarcophagus corner - and will be part of a $2 million collection of more than 150 ancient works up for grabs Oct. 15.

Wise men say /Only fools rush in/ But I can´t help /Falling in love with you

Can´t help falling in love with you.

Ingen tårer under Madonnas Frozen etterpå. Ingen tårer til Bond-soundtrack som ble spilt før. Altså en udiskutabel sammenheng mellom gråt og UB40. Kanskje logisk?

Tennessee, the volunteer state. From the majestic mountains to the place where the white guy who mad

Tennessee, the volunteer state. From the majestic mountains to the place where the white guy who made black music ok for teenagers to listen to died on the toilet.

WHERE THE NAME COME FROM

Tennessee’s name comes from the Cherokee Indians. It got it’s start when the chief of the Cherokee saw a beautiful white woman. He couldn’t think of what to say, so asked her if she was from Tennessee. When she denied the allegations, he replied that she was the only ten he saw. Thus not only did Tennessee get it’s name, the first pick up line was born.

CLIMATE

Like many of the other states near Tennessee, it has weather like a woman, it can never decide what to do. Am I right guys? Guys???

MAJOR TERRIBLE EVENTS

There was once this huge storm, but it sort of covered the whole area. Tennessee felt a little left out so it decided to join in and declare that it had really low temperatures during that time. Tennessee residents were forced to put on an extra blanket.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

-The Great Smokey Mountains. Come and see the beautiful mountains, stay to see the residents in the rural mountains see a book for the very first time.

-Dollywood. It took everything within me to not supply you with a Dolly Parton boob joke. I am trying to run a mature website here………but wow, how are those comfortable? It’s like she was stung and they became swollen…

-Graceland. This is where Elvis lived, ate, slept, ate some more, did a comeback schedule, then ate some more, then died. Many 45 to 55 year olds flock to this site to remember their good ole’ days of rebellion, when they went against their parents and wore skirts that went up to their knee caps and listened to that blasted devil music, otherwise known as Elvis and Buddy Holly.

HISTORY

-1780: West North Carolina and East North Carolina have an argument. West North Carolina got mad and went to it’s room, drawing a line in permanent marker that North Carolina cannot cross. Thus Tennessee was born. Tennessee and North Carolina still hang out sometimes, though their conversations are mainly filled with many awkward silences and some slight swearing.

-1838: The Cherokee Indians are uprooted. They are promised that if they go, they’ll get a new sharpened stick. Many Cherokee to this day have not received their sharpened stick, but many do not care since they are getting their jollies by watching the white man come to their casinos and push themselves ever closer to a divorce and suicide.

-1920: Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the Amendment that gave women the right to vote. Causing many Tennessee residents to declare “Tennessee has women?”

PERCENTAGES

Whites: 65%

Off Whites: 20%

Guys hoping to be the next Brooks and Dunn: 43%

People who claim that “the volunteer state” is a good nickname: 33%

MAJOR CITIES

Memphis: The home of something….something has to be there…come on think…I really should of actually done research for this.

Nashville: Where country music lives and where your dog dies, your tractor breaks down, and you push all your friends away with your alcoholism.

EDUCATION

85% are able to read

19% think Garth Brooks should be President

FUN FACTS

-Tennessee doesn’t actually even exist. It’s a figment of your imagination.

-Tennessee is the only state in which you can never find a signal for your cell phone.

-Tennessee claims that even though it’s nickname is “The Volunteer State” that does not mean you can take advantage of it.

-Tennessee is actually a really big fan of the Johnnyism blog, and you aren’t going to let Tennessee be better than you now are you? ARE YOU???

-in a sworn statement at a Tennessee police department, Johnny signed a sworn affidavit claiming that he did indeed not actually know anything about the state of Tennessee and that he’s never even read a book before.

FAMOUS TENNESSEEIANS

Al Gore: tried to be president once, now spends his free time pretending to save the universe from a more tropical climate.

Morgan Freeman: Hi. My name is Morgan Freeman. I got a cool voice that reminds everyone of documentaries. I’m a better actor than Samuel L. Jackson. Without me, there would be no March of the Penguins.

Miley Cyrus: the fifteen year old with questionable judgment that your 11 year old daughter likes to imitate.

Elvis: The one man who single handedly went against the “man” by shaking his hips. Not only did he invent music, but he is credited with improving race relations. He actually freed the slaves. See Also: Eminem

If you turn this statue on it's head, you can almost hear the ocean.

This man is soley responsible for how great race relations are right now.

3 out of 4 residents of Tennessee are involved in a country music band. If you are not, you are considered scum and not allowed to vote.

Some think that this is a photo of a football game. Actually, it's a photo of a riot at a Shania Twain concert. It's just a coincidence that there are people wearing orange football jerseys.

This is what most people from Tennessee swear by. Most residents swear that if this did not exist, then they would move. Or probably just eat a different brand of ice cream.

Over the past couple of weeks we've looked at Summer 2008 Fashion, Jeans and T-Shirts and today as a special treat to all our readers - we are going to look at footwear. Shoes are a conundrum, you need a pair for so many differing occassions and weather types, it is very tempting to spalsh out on whatever you come across - leaving you with an Imelda Marcos style wardrobe full of unused footwear. So in a not very original at all manner, let's have a look at some essential styles of the moment!.

Boots - The ubiqutous UGG Boots have reinged supreme here for the last few years, and deservedly so, however - we feel that cowboy boots are coming back big style.

Sandals - Peacocks have some great Gladiator Sandals (and great cheap footwear in general), but please no more crocs!

[caption id="attachment_59" align="aligncenter" width="140" caption="Peacocks Sandals"][/caption]

Wedges - Earthy, muted colours with a cork base look great, we tend to steer clear of bright patent leather.

Trainers - Converse All Star - Great range of colours and styles that look cool with just about anything.

Flats - A great versatile shoe that can easily be worn for work or play.

Heels - Ramp up the glam factor, and get pulses racing with a bold pair of heels.

To finish let's have a look at the classic homage to footwear - 'Blue Suede Shoes' from the 68 Elvis Comeback Special. Obviously, this video is an essential style guide in itself..........enjoy!

My daughter was sitting on her little potty this morning, big tears running down her cheek, telling me "You're not going to work today Daddy?" I hope that doesn't happen every day, because I might have to quit my job.

I found something pretty cool at Boing Boing today, as I often do. They posted a picture of a sculpture from the 2nd Century AD that very much resembles Elvis. The original article is from the Daily Mail. Here's the picture:

Isn't that fascinating?

Nuns, Monks, Cockerels, Willy Wonker, Mr Invincible, Superman, Lifeguards, Pamela Anderson and Elvis Presley were all in attendance at Headingley on day 3 of the international test match between England and South Africa, but not too many eyes were directed towards the field.

As a cordial, yet skillful South Africa asserted their dominance over England in a slow non eventful affair, the West Terrace did a sterling job entertaining the masses with games of lob the chicken, balloon racing, Mexican waves and record breaking beer snakes, much to the frustration of the staid stewards.

As one close member in the Wintershed Upper observed, “this is classic English” – albeit with some irony as the comment was made during one of the many Mexican waves.

However, the comment was delivered with aplomb; it’s an accepted certainty that the English have many flaws, but a quality they possess in abundance is the ability to see the lighter side of dire circumstances; on this occasion those dire circumstances happened to be a cricket match in the north of England in unfavorable whether conditions with thinly spread moments of interest occurring on the field.

Off the field though, Pamela Anderson in Baywatch attire created merriment by simulating slow motion bouncers between the aisles, tossed rubber chickens bought excitable oohs and arrhs and the ebullition generated by the building of snake like shapes out of part-empty plastic pint glasses occupied cricket devotees from the Kirkstall Lane End and in the East Stand with this alternative form of cricket.

Just like the famous song, the English do try to All Ways Look on the Bright Side of Life and even though on this day, the circumstances wasn’t exactly finding laughter through tears, the theory of Python's concept was most definitely applied; for though the game was uneventful, the experience was memorable.

I was in Aledo, Texas last week.

While driving around the town, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted what looked like THE KING walking the streets of Aledo:

Not the Burger King, but this "King":

Check out the chops on both pictures. The top one is Aledo's Elvis. The other is a "younger" Elvis.

Seriously, if Elvis is living in Aledo, Texas, then expect to see hordes of fans flocking to Aledo.

Mark my words, if it's him, Aledo is the new Graceland.

I fell upon it accidentally this afternoon. I haven't listened to it years. When you feel your sanity may be in question, it really is a good idea to review the past as a good indicator that you've grown just a little. I distinctly remember the last part of the song nearly killing me with gut-wrenching heartache.

What do I do now? Are we going under?
What did I do wrong?
Thought we had it sorted
Is there someone else? Am I too familiar?
Was it when I said I wanted to have children?

Tore up all your photos, didn't feel too clever
Spent the whole of Sunday sticking you together
Now I'd like to call but I feel too awkward
Some things need explaining
No one told me it was raining (raining, raining...)

Though I still find this to be a great song and another perfect example why Elvis Costello is a phenomenal songwriter (since who else can write with such simplicity and depth all at the same time?), listening to it again today made me grateful that for that break-up. What in hell was I thinking?!?!?!

Last weekend I attended a special event hosted by the Grammy Foundation entitled: “An Evening with

Last weekend I attended a special event hosted by the Grammy Foundation entitled: “An Evening with Sir George Martin – The Making of Sgt Pepper”.

It was an amazing evening to be sure and there where a number of celebrities in the audience (I Remember spotting Slash and Nancy Sinatra). But of course we where all waiting for the man who is often referred to as the 5th Beatle.

At 81 years old, Sir George is pretty spry, a great speaker, and very funny.

Before getting into the making of the most influential album in pop music history, he took a moment to tell us how he got started in record business, he told humorous stories about the crude technology used to record music in England during the 50's. Tape was still too noisy so they would record on wax disc. Also electricity was too erratic in England at the time to record sound consistently (It would fluctuate), so they would use gravity to power their recording equipment with a series gears and heavy ball (Quite amazing really).

But by the time he was introduced to the Beatles, recording tape was now the standard. It was at this point during his talk, that I came away with (what I felt) was the most significant bit of information.

I was certainly aware that the Beatles had already been turned down by some of the other record labels in England before being signed to Parlaphone records. But according to Sir George Martin (and he should know): By the time he was first introduced to John, Paul, George, and Ringo they had already been turned down by EVERY record label. Including the Parlaphone label that Sir George Martin was now in charge of running......He wasn't aware of this when he first sat down with their manager Brian Epstein and heard their demo. He didn't think the demo was very good either, but he said Brian Epstein pleaded with him, so he grudgingly said to go ahead and bring them to the studio and he would see if there something to them that the didn't hear on the demo......He added, that had he been award that everyone else had turned them down, he would have never agreed to give them a 2nd try.

But he didn't know so, he meet with them, and he felt that they had something......The rest as they say, "is history".

Now as I heard this, there is of course the obvious lesson to be learned about having faith in yourself, even after everyone has rejected you.

But even more astonishing to me is to consider, what if he had known?

What if he had known that every other label had already rejected them? He would have probably said "No thank you".

The Beatles had a strong loyal following in their hometown. It was the sight of kids lining up to see them play at the Cavern Club that first brought enabled their manager Brian Epstein to discover them. They had reached a level of buzz in their hometown and needed something to propel them to a higher level. And in those days there was no way to record an album without record label contract.

But if every label has already said no, what are you going to do?

Maybe things might have worked out in the end, but maybe that might have been it. The Beatles might have remained a local cover band playing at their local club until they and their audience got older and got busy with responsibilities like marriage, kids, etc

There is a similar story about Elvis. The owner of Sun records discovered Elvis as one of his customers (back in those days you could pay about 20 bucks and they would record a one off record of you singing. It was novelty item). Sam Phillips thought Elvis had an interesting voice and thought he might hook him up with some musicians that where looking for a singer. But it almost didn't happen. Sam invited Bill Black and Scotty Moore to jam with Elvis and after taking a number of stabs at traditional country western songs, nothing seemed to jell. They took a break and it seemed like nothing was going to come of it. Then Elvis picked up the guitar and started playing the blues song "That's All Right Mamma". The Band joined in and suddenly the magic happened.

But what if he hadn't picked up that guitar?

And what if Sir George had said “no thank you”?

A world with The Beatles?

A world without Elvis?

It boggles the mind.

This just in from Camille Sloan, this year’s president of the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Asso

This just in from Camille Sloan, this year's president of the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association:

The Board of Directors has approved the following use of our proceeds from the Elvis Festival. The exact figures are not in, but it looks as if the proceeds will be around $80,000.
- 50% towards a rainy day fund
- up to 25% towards a tangible, visible investment in Downtown
- up to 25% towards a new position at Main Street

So, if DTMSA winds up with a profit of $80,000, the approval means:
- $40,000 will be put in a rainy day fund
- up to $20,000 will be spent on a tangible, visible investment in Downtown
- up to $20,000 will be spent on a new position at Main Street

Camille didn't say what the "tangible, visible investment" will be. You can read the suggestions and add your two cents here.

lots of interesting speakers so far. george siemens did the keynote on monday day 1. His discussion of fragmented narrative of most interest to me. Then attended useful sessions on integration of Desire2Learn software. Good to be in a place full of instructors with clear ideas of how technology can be usefully integrated into course delivery.

Little tired after the Graceland,/Beale street outing organised for us. Managed to make the 8am session on managing the first year transition which was useful. Put this down to the fact that I only had one of what the waitress insisted was a local drink of a big ass beer with rumplemint chaser. These are their names not mine. it really is a called a big ass beer.

Heute bin ich auf diesen interessanten Zeitgenossen gestoßen. Ein König des Tap Dancings.

This documentary short, produced for West Virginia public TV's "Different Drummer" series, introduces us to Jesco White, a hard-living, tap-dancing Boone County resident whose repeated run-ins with the law have interfered with his dream of becoming as renowned a "mountain dancer" as his late father, D. Ray White. We meet Jesco's three distinct personalities; the gentle and loving Jesse, the violent and dangerous Jesco, and the extremely strange Elvis. We also encounter various members of Jesco's family, all nearly as eccentric as Jesco himself. Dancing Outlaw Jesco White is a tap-dancing, Elvis-impersonating, West Virginian, mountain-dwelling, white trash hick who stars in this entertaining documentary revolving around him living with his demons in the shadow of his murdered father.

und hier der zweite Teil, Jesco geht nach Hollywood

Dancing Outlaw II: Jesco Goes to Hollywood

The title says it all! but in case you need more...

This follow-up to "Dancing Outlaw" feels far more unnatural than the original, but it's just as fascinating. The short documentary follows West Virginia dance whiz Jesco to Hollywood, where he's booked to perform on the TV show "Roseanne."

Most of the scenes depicting Jesco in his native Boone County are blatantly staged. This seems a bit tacky at first considering that the strength of the first "Dancing Outlaw" was the fact it approached Jesco on his own terms.

But the 'sanitized' depiction of Jesco ends abruptly once Jesco arrives on the sets of "Roseanne." Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold had been charmed by the first documentary and thought Jesco would be perfect for a 'white trash/hick' show segment. At the time the episode filmed, her relationship with Tom Arnold was disintegrating. The venom exchanged between Roseanne and Tom on the sets is often excruciating to watch.

Roseanne, already in a heated spat with Arnold, flies into a rage when she sees Jesco's prison-styled swastika tattoo. The couple takes public swipes at each other, now using Jesco as a scapegoat for what were obviously pre-existing problems. Oddly, the only person who carries himself with dignity is Jesco.

In the end, Hollywood can adore The Dancing Outlaw as a cult hero from afar, but they can't accept Jesco on his own terms -- which was the whole point of the first documentary. In a land of glitter and not gold, Jesco is just too real even for those who embrace controversy.
