Wired's Scott Thill posted on Monday about the full-album concerts he'd like to see were mortality and inter-band hatred not a problem. His list is as follows:

From Listening Post at Wired:

Top Five Full-Album Wish List That Will Never Come True

* The Beatles, The White Album
* Jimi Hendrix, Electric Ladyland
* Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin
* Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um
* The Doors, The Doors

Top Five Full-Album Wish List That Could Come True (Given Enough Cash and Hype)

* Pixies, Surfer Rosa
* My Bloody Valentine, Loveless
* Tom Waits, Rain Dogs
* De La Soul, De La Soul is Dead
* Three Mile Pilot, Chief Assassin to the Sinister

I've attended a number of the Don't Look Back series events in the past and pretty solidly enjoyed them all. Sonic Youth doing Daydream Nation was a highlight but Sebadoh's Bubble & Scrape was pretty spectacular. I'm not going to criticise either list because, barring Three Mile Pilot on the reason of ignorance to their music, I would likely consider purchasing tickets for all of the above. Most fervently, I'd push my grandmother into a moderately deep but soft-bottomed well to see Tom Waits do Rain Dogs.

So here's an alternative list of five I would love to have seen happen but won't, eight that totally could with some charm and finesse on the part of promoters, and five uber-speculative hopes that could, maybe, one-in-a-million odds, happen. Note: All are deliberatly not overlapping with the above as otherwise Waits, Pixies and MBV would be here.

Five that could never happen

The Replacements - Let It Be (they are mostly alive but it wouldn't be the same without Bob)

Curtis Mayfield - Superfly

Elliott Smith - Either/Or

Otis Redding - Otis Blue

Nirvana - In Utero

Eight that could happen with finesse and/or money

Fugazi - Repeater

Neutral Milk Hotel - In An Aeroplane Over The Sea

Red House Painters - Red House Painters (Rollercoaster cover)

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy

Weezer - Pinkerton

Eels - Electro-Shock Blues

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise

American Music Club - California

Five uber-speculations

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

REM - Automatic for the People

Radiohead - The Bends

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti (Yes, no Bonham. But they tore up the O2 and could still cut it)

Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (In a small or at least mid-size venue without the pyrotechnics)

There was once a girl she "humiliated" me by beating me in arm wrestling. All my friends were there to witness the public moment of shame. All the people that would not give a shit about it was there too cos' it happened at the cafeteria. Emma, that was her name. The girl that made me walked around with my head hung low for a week. But Emma also has a great taste in music and lend me a couple of CDs: Tindersticks, Eels, Belle and Sebastian, Elliott Smith... For initiating me into a furious love affair with Elliott Smith's music, I guess I can forgive her for the public humiliation.

The first Smith's album I borrowed off Emma was "Either/Or". I've heard "The Ballad of Big Nothing" from a sampler CD, and that got me really interested in hearing more of his music. The Beatles-esque jangly-guitar pop was just irresistible. I dubbed the CD into a cassette and was listening to it every night in my tiny little ship's cabin (I lived on the sea for three years). The music soothed me. The way he sings the word "fuck" was so... perfect in punctuating the feeling of frustrations. A friend once said he is amused by how such a rough looking man can cuss in such angelic way in a song. Case in point: Pictures of Me and Say Yes.

I think "Either/Or" will always stay as my all time favorite album of ES. It reminded me of living life on the sea, playing poker in my cabin with mates, and the ego bruise from arm wrestling with Emma (her sister Elin tackled me down on the beach with the eye-witness of other mates not very long ago from the arm wrestling of shame incident). Yes, Elliott's music is just perfect for the down trodden losers, misfits and outcast... he is the Morrissey of the 90s.

I'm so sorry not have have posted recently but you can check out a more regularly update version of the site on my Tumblr page. Bookmark that for more recommended links that I'll be providing here.

Going round at the moment is a trend of listing the favourite albums since your year of birth and I thought I would indulge myself in that one. I'm going to do a movie one too so look out for that.

So, from my birth to now, my favourite records of every completed year thus far. An additional comment: I realise you are only supposed to choose one per year but damn, this was a little too hard for that. As far as my research goes, all are also based on UK release dates.

Rhyner really is a horrible asshole.

http://www.dallasobserver.com/2008-07-03/news/the-hard-lie/full

Rhyner really is a horrible asshole. I am not surprised that George was empathic, and that Gordo has called.

This is what happens when people have no understanding of depression and all that it entails. And when they go all conservative on us and blame just about everything on the individual. The easy way out is abandoning someone, using conservative logic to do it, as opposed to digging into the true complexity of what is going on. It plays well in "the south." It's all so black and white to those "fuckers from the south."

Elliott grew up near Dallas. These songs were no mistake once he got the fuck out.

http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=61913

Killing a southern belle is all you know how to do
That and give other people hell
It's what they expect from you, too
But I wouldn't have you how you want
I don't want to walk around
I don't even want to breathe
I live in a southern town
Where all you can do is grit your teeth
But I wouldn't have you how you want
How come you're not ashamed of what you are?
And sorry that you're the one she got?
Ain't nobody talking now
Nobody, nothing's said
No one's about to shout
Nobody's seen red
But I wouldn't have you how you want
You're killing a southern belle
Killing a southern belle
Killing a southern belle

http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=3530822107858540719

He's a busted main line but you ought to hear him out
Bleeding fortified wine out of the injury that I call my mouth
Trying to insult some crazy fucker from the south
Whose arrow comes to pick me out
And so I'm waiting for a shot of white noise
I don’t want to hear no stupid screaming little half-assed middle-class boy
Because I've got a headache
And I'm already full of useless stories
Erin, come pick me out
Because I've got a headache
And I'm already full of these useless stories
So Erin, come on, pick me out
Erin, come on, pick me out
A broken arrow

I never realized how many Elliott Smith-inspired blogs are out there. Many have been left untouched for years. I hope the authors are doing alright. This morning I came across a "Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands" blog. And I also discovered "a distorted reality" blog at blogspot.

Also, click on the link to the right to the great Chris Carlsson's blog. He has photos and a report from what looked to be a pretty phenomanal Vancouver Critical Mass for June. Carlsson is another one of those amazing individuals. Maybe one of the most amazing I have known. He inspires countless ideas inside of me... seeing them through is the tough part, though!

I've been beating the drum for Tom Rothrock's music for about a year and a half now, ever since I heard his debut album, Resonator.

It's an album of electric slide guitar and dobro married to strings and rhythm loops that conjure up an atmosphere that's palpable. I've got another opportunity to sing his praises when he plays live on Ghost Trails & Ambient Americana, an Echoes Soundscape for July 4th.

(You can also hear an audio version of this blog, with music)

Back in February, we gathered in an expansive Hollywood Hills home with floor to 18 foot ceiling windows, an ornate fireplace and massive crystal chandelier. Mixed in with construction equipment and sawdust amidst a renovation project was a clutter of amplifiers, guitars, dobro, drums, a string quartet, a French horn player and vibraphone. It's the home of Tom Rothrock. He's the one with the dobro. It looks like an acoustic guitar except instead of a soundhole there is an ornate, acoustically driven, metal speaker.

Tom Rothrock: Hear that. That's the 1930s, this is the technology we're talking about. (Squeeky tuning pegs) These guitars were made in the big band era for soloists and they had a speaker to make them cut through and they traded the tone of a nice instrument for the projection of a metal speaker...

On an album called Resonator, Tom Rothrock projects his dobro into an Americana Electronica. Rothrock is usually found behind the boards as a producer. He cut James Blunt's multimillion selling CD, Back to Bedlam and its worldwide number one hit single, "You're Beautiful." Before that, all he did was produce Elliott Smith and discover Beck and produce his debut, Mellow Gold. It's the sound of "Loser," that planted the seed of Tom Rothrock's CD, Resonator.

That slide guitar on "Loser?" that was Rothrock.

Tom Rothrock: ....that is a guitar that Beck had back then. It’s a Japanese kind of what we, maybe someone of the 60s someone would call a beach guitar or something . . . and that was the first time we had recorded a slide lick, I think that really, so that really sort of started it for me.

Resonator is an album raunchy slide guitar, elegant strings, bristling textures and driving rhythms that could be the soundtrack for Bladerunner in the west. Tom Rothrock continues to produce, releasing an album by Roman Carter on his own Bongload record label and producing the latest James Blunt album, All the Lost Souls. You can hear Rothrock's Electronica Americana on the album, Resonator. Right now, it's only available online from iTunes.

Tune in to Echoes on July 4th and you can hear that group gathered in Tom Rothrock's living room when they play their only live performance ever on Ghost Trails and Ambient Americana, a July Fourth Soundscape from Echoes. This has been an Echo Location, soundings for new music.

And once again, you can also hear an Audio version of this blog, with music.

And here's another week of me pretending to be Zach Braff or Cameron Crowe. Although this week's influence is clearly more Cameron Crowe with me borrowing his choice of the opening scene from Vanilla Sky.

the opening scene - with the protagonist in his perfect world
the strip club scene - where he meets his partner in crime
the planning scene - done in a montage...montage!
the bank heist scene - with band in cameo as customers
the car chase scene - with peugeots, renaults, and vauxhalls
the happy, drugged out scene - swimming in a vault of gold coins
the casino scene - playing pot limit omaha shorthanded
the losing it all scene - with the robbers being robbed
the aftermath scene - anger and going separate ways
the downward spiral scene - depression and lots of drinking
the redemption scene - with an improbably complicated plan that goes off without a hitch leaving everything nicely tied up and everyone happy
the end credits - with the tease of something cool at the end

The movie is a combination of Oceans 11, Ronin, Heat, and Leaving Las Vegas...but happier! :) Here's the listing of the actual track names.

Radiohead - Everything In Its Right Place
Goldfrapp - Ooh La La
Devotchka - Vengo! Vengo!
Spoon - Don't Make Me A Target
Bloc Party - Banquet Phones Disco Edit
Fiery Furnaces - Straight Street
Wolf Parade - This Heart's On Fire
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow
DJ Shadow - Midnight In A Perfect World
Elliott Smith - Between the Bars
Explosions in the Sky - First Breath After Coma

Good riddance Irvine.

Irvine is like the Rose Parade in the Elliott Smith song.

If you are not familiar with Irvine, it is basically the typical oppressive suburb... but worse. Old, elderly conservative assholes. "Young families," who, by and large, are also conservative assholes. I truly do not have a problem with conservatives, just with conservative assholes. The people who look down on anyone outside of their normal. That is what so many of the people who "come to Irvine for the 'good schools' do. They hate rough shaves. They hate anything other than a t-shirt, Old Navy shorts, and flip-flops. They think you are gay if you have an earring. And then they wonder why you "made the choice." They effectively kill or merely suck the life out of their children. Some get out. Some revolt. See Zack De La Rocha.

Tomorrow I become a resident of Los Angeles, easily the most diverse city in America. Some folks claim they love diversity. It hits you in the face in LA. I bet many San Franciscans could not handle it in LA. San Francisco and Manhattan style diversity makes me laugh. Diversity at a distance. Diluted diversity. I will expand upon this in the future, but in a nutshell, in LA Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians of all flavors live on top of one another. Not so in Manhattan for sure, and increasingly this is the case in San Francisco.

Twelve miles each way (uphill, in the snow) work commute by bike starts for me this week. Living once again in the heart of a vibrant place where I can walk, bike, bus, subway. Where my daughter can see something other than people repainting barely-faded crosswalk paint. I cannot wait.

Irvine, fuck off. Never thought I would say this, but... Randy Newman... "I love LA!"

In radio, as a "talent," even if you are nice to them, you tend refer to your audience merely as "listeners." Technically, of course, that's what they are, but "listener" in this context is treated as somewhat of a lower life form.

Now, out of radio, since... what...? like 2000... and really not wanting to get back in, yet still having to deal with not being the center of attention for three to four hours a day, I am simply a "radio listener." I now understand why my listeners acted as they did. I also can more clearly recall what excited me about radio as a kid.

I bugged the morning host, Joe Escalante, at Indie 103.1 to play Elliott Smith on the radio. First off, Indie is one of a handful of truly great stations left in the nation. And it is not even a contest that it is the best in LA, no matter how you look at it. But Elliott never gets played on the radio, which strikes me as odd. And frankly, he ought to be a staple on a station like Indie. But, I digress....

The point is that yesterday morning he played the song. Something so oddly simple as a DJ playing your song. You feel like a nerd, loser, and geek all rolled into one just by caring. But let's face it, it is pretty cool. It is a quest we all went on at one time or another in our childhood. And for some of us, in our adulthood.

The larger point is that radio is no longer designed for that type of "listener"/"talent" connection. And that's sad.

Every few months I fall into this obsession with Elliott Smith, it lasts for about two weeks, and ends when it all just makes me too sad. I play him constantly, all the time, repeated for two weeks. It ends, and then starts up again when I least expect it. To honour my obsession with him at the moment, here is an ode to "Between the Bars". My two favourite covers are the live cover Holly Miranda (from The Jealous Girlfriends) and Scott Matthew perform, mostly because Holly Miranda's voice fits the song perfectly, and the emotion she put into it is absolutely incredible. Chris Garneau does an incredible cover of the song and La Blogotheque does an incredible video (shown in one of my below posts)

Although I've lived in Hawaii for the past seven years, and I'm moving to D.C. in a few months, I've always considered Washington state home. Spent my first twenty years there, I did. And amazingly enough, through sheer insistence I have kept my ear to the Seattle music scene over the years (thanks mostly to the internet and friends that still live there). The Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho) has always been a breeding ground for rock musicians, and singer/songwriters in particular. Here are my favorites.

A few names aren't here for a reason. Singer/Songwriters that play predominantly in full bands but play solo sometimes weren't considered (Sunny Day Real Estate's Jeremy Enigk, Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard, etc), as well as musicians that made names for themselves elsewhere but relocated to the PNW (Luke Temple, Silver Scooter's Scott Garred, Spoon's Britt Daniel).

6. Rocky Votolato - Seattle, WA
Rocky grew up in Texas, but I won't hold it against him. He started making a name for himself as the lead singer of Seattle's Waxwing during the late 90's and early 00's. He's been putting out solo records for about eight years now, and each album seems to get a little better. He has a bad habit of trying to sound "tough" during his songs, which comes off weird. Nobody wants to hear you sing about beating someone up, you have an acoustic guitar in your hands. It doesn't work. But all in all, he's still mostly-good, and comfort food. (Song: "White Daisy Passing" from Makers, 2006)[audio=http://www.russcrandall.netfirms.com/lists/sing/pnw06.mp3]
---

5. Ben Barnett (Kind Of Like Spitting) - Portland, OR
Kind of Like Spitting was the moniker Ben Barnett used from 1996 to last year when they "broke up". Ben has girl problems. Seriously, I have 142 KOLS songs in my iTunes and besides a Phil Ochs covers album, they're all about girls for the most part. I don't mind, but it does seem a little too focused sometimes. Ben Barnett seems to always be on the brink of a meltdown, which is compelling material. His songs are extremely varied, going from whisper to howl all within one album. And he's an incredible guitarist, which amazingly enough isn't always the case with singer/songwriters. KOLS is now defunct and Ben teaches kids music at Paul Green's School of Rock in Portland. (Song: "Worker Bee #7438-F87904" from Kind of Like Sptting's In The Red, 2005)[audio=http://www.russcrandall.netfirms.com/lists/sing/pnw05.mp3]
---

4. Damien Jurado - Seattle, WA
He looks (and usually dresses) like a lumberjack, although in the picture above he's wearing an old-school US Navy dungaree shirt. That might be part of his allure - this big rough-looking guy sitting down and singing sincere, simple folk songs. Damien has had a roller coaster career, including being signed to Sub Pop in the late 90's, but he's always produced good music. His mostly-fictional folk stories draw crowds and make the ladies cry, and the darkness of his material usually brings Will Oldham comparisons. Which is a good thing. (Song: "Medication" from Ghost of David, 2000)[audio=http://www.russcrandall.netfirms.com/lists/sing/pnw04.mp3]
---

3. Phil Elvrum (The Microphones, Mount Eerie) - Olympia, WA
Phil Elvrum is a bit of an enigma for me, as he's the only singer/songwriter on this list that I didn't listen to before moving away from the PNW. He now plays under the moniker of Mount Eerie, but unfortunately none of his material has been as good as The Microphones' albums, the last one being 2003's aptly-titled Mount Eerie. He makes lo-fi masterpieces, which he mostly records himself. He plays a nylon-string guitar and makes simple, interesting melodies that are easy to swallow but are deceptively smart, too. (Song: "I Felt Your Shape" from The Microphones' The Glow Pt. 2, 2001)[audio=http://www.russcrandall.netfirms.com/lists/sing/pnw03.mp3]
---

2. David Bazan (Pedro The Lion) - Seattle, WA
Pedro the Lion was a moniker that David Bazan used until her started going by his name a couple of years ago. There is a storytelling in Bazan's work that is unrivaled, and each word is carefully crafted and usually inspiring. His stories deal heavily with morality, his father is a minister or something to that effect. There are genuine struggles in his work, and he's always done things his way; that super-slow, deliberate voice of his has never felt rushed. His 2000 concept album Winners Never Quit is just about perfect, highlighted by some brilliantly subtle intra-song references. For example, the melody of the guitar solo in the song below is also a vocal line in the third song on this album. (Song: "Slow And Steady Wins The Race", from Pedro the Lion's Winners Never Quit, 2000)[audio=http://www.russcrandall.netfirms.com/lists/sing/pnw02.mp3]
---

1. Elliott Smith - Portland, OR
Easily the most successful singer/songwriter on this list, the late Elliott Smith quickly rose to fame after doing most of the soundtrack to Good Will Hunting and receiving an Oscar nomination in 1998 for "Miss Misery" (he lost to "My Heart Will Go On"). He struggled with drug addiction throughout his career, and definitely hit some lows. But his ability to write ridiculously complex/good guitar parts to seemingly simple (but "just right") vocal melodies was (and continues to be) unmatched. His last two studio albums were pretty lousy, but nobody makes a perfect record every time, right? (Song: "The Biggest Lie", from Elliott Smith, 1995)[audio=http://www.russcrandall.netfirms.com/lists/sing/pnw01.mp3]
Here's the footage of him playing at the Oscars. A fish out of water:

I've been getting an unusual amount of traffic onto a post I wrote almost a year ago. I reread it and its a pretty angsty post. I find it a little unsettling that you can pretty much predict my emotional state based on the time of year. Februarys can be rough on me because of certain things I'm reminded of. And, apparently Junes suck for me now. My shrink had some $10 word for my supposed chronic condition. I can't decide if, like half of psychology, it's complete bullshit. It could just be everyday highs and lows. Then again, the highs and the lows are probably more intense for me than the average person. I could have been an emo kid in high school. We're talking Rivers Cuomo emo here, not Pete Wentz or Chris Carrabba.

My friend Melissa thinks I'm just a tortured soul. She says I should be happy about it, because tortured souls are sexy. RFK, Robert Downey, Jr., Elliott Smith, Kurt Kobain, Holden Caufield, the Incredible Hulk, Bruce Wayne. And, oh yeah, current favorite tortured soul Hank Moody (if you don't already watch Californication, you need to get on that). The problem with tortured souls is they are completely and utterly spent. There is no emotional capital there for anything other than the internal turmoil. Also they're all dead or drug addicts. Or both. And the really good ones, they're all literary characters. Come on ladies, where are you? Tortured soul, come and get your tortured soul. Huh, I guess the emotional bankruptcy kind of cancels out the sexiness of a soul that's tortured. Yeah, I don't want to be that.

Prince is 50 today. He's almost as old as my parents. What?

My parents are having their bathroom and closet redone, so all the rooms upstairs are sealed off with plastic to keep all the dust out. Before the renovation, my mom told me to go through my stuff to see if there was anything I needed before the work started. There probably are a few things up there that I will need, but oh well. I didn't do a very thorough check. I did pull out my high school yearbooks. I looked through all the notes left by other people and marveled at the unbridled excitement and naivete about the future. Keep in touch this summer. Best friends forever. Going to school with you next year is going to be CRAZY!!!! PARTIES WOOO!!! All the requisite we're gonna be friends forever stuff. Then, there was this:

Your two fingered salutes get you insta insta punk rock points.

A kid named Welch left that. I was probably only friends with him because he was good friends with one of my good friends. I guess I was pretty fond of the middle digits on either hand. And even more fond of using them at the same time. And it apparently gave me insta insta punk rock points. I wonder if my brown Dr Martens, jeans and polo shirt got me punk rock points.

Já vi o show dela e vale a pena. :S )

The Elliot Smith tribute was actually really, really good. It’s nice to keep the memory alive in the company of others that can commiserate the passing of such a prolific artisan. However, the scene wasn’t all drab and debby downer, it was actually really upbeat throughout the night. I got there as two of the guys in Lions each played a few songs, followed by the Unbearables, who have lot of people in their band. Somehow the guys from Zykos and Zookeeper formed some kind of impromptu supergroup and rocked out, and then the lead for lalaland played (I honestly don’t know his name…) followed by Slow Train. Also, I took pictures.
