If you have ever known a movie that is a cult classic, Gogol Bordello is the musical equivalent.
Currently, the band has 10 members. This may sound way too busy for any relevant band but they work as an amazing cohesive unit. Their live shows are uncontested as one of the best musical acts you can come across. I have seen a lot of shows live. The likes of Rob Zombie, Staind, Stone Sour, The Lost Prophets, Adema, Powerman 5000, Static X and so on and so forth but none of them can come close to the energy and stage presence that Gogol Bordello brings. Until you actually check them out, words can't really describe.
The frontman, Eugene Hutz, also doubles as a solid actor. The movie "Everything is Illuminated" stars Elijah Wood and Eugene Hutz and they both put on great performances.
Gogol Bordello will be seen next on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" on July 30th. Do yourself a favor and check them out.

Remember when an all-nighter meant studying for a test? Well, not in Old Pas this weekend.

If you are a die-hard fan of Tolkien and want to share the experience in an all-nighter, then head on out to Old Pas for a sunset to sunrise showing of The Lord of the Rings

The crowning event of the Old Pasadena Film Festival is this Saturday’s all-night screening of Peter Jackson’s three-movie masterpiece The Lord of the Rings, concluding with a sunrise Hobbit breakfast at approximately 6:00 A.M. Sunday morning. Starting at 8:30 P.M. on Saturday, July 26, and running for more than nine hours, this outdoor showing in the One Colorado Courtyard is presented in part by the American Cinematheque. The screening and breakfast are free and open to the public. For further information, the public is asked to please call 626.564.1066 or visit www.oldpasadenafilmfestival.com

J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, The Lord of the Rings, upon which the films are based, has influenced generations of readers worldwide and continues to captivate new fans around the globe. The trilogy’s film director Peter Jackson and a brilliantly talented cast and crew have brought to cinematic life the epic adventure of good against evil. The future of civilization rests in the fate of the One Ring, which has been lost for centuries. Powerful forces are unrelenting in their search for it. Fate has placed it in the hands of a young Hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits the Ring - and undertakes a heroic quest revealing how, through courage, commitment, and determination, even the smallest of us can change the world.

Chairs will be set up for the film presentation, but attendees are invited to bring their own comfortable deckchairs, blankets and midnight snacks for this marathon screening.

I don't know how the dog feels about it, but he's more likely to want a soft bed than hours of noise on hard concrete and get that "human's are the strangest things" sort of look on his face.

Have you ever just clicked through imdb to see the odd movies and tv shows that actors have played in? Well that’s what I was doing and I’ve come up with a pretty good list. Some of the titles are just enough to make you laugh.

The Calcium Kid (2004)-Orlando Bloom as Jimmy Connelly
This isn't even that old but I've never heard of it lol. It looks like an 80's move from the picture.

Walker Texas Ranger episode “The Prodigal Son” (1994)- Tobey Maguire as Duane Parsons

No Dessert, Dad, Till You Mow the Lawn (1994)- James Marsden as Tyler Cochran
What a stupid sounding movie! Definitely check this link out but the picture is small so look close at the emo teenager, that's him. :)

Amistad (1997)- Anna Paquin as Queen Isabella II
I think it's funny how she still looks exactly the same.

Thunderpants (2002)- Rupert Grint as Alan A. Allen and rumored Keira Knightley as a music school student

Pocahontas (1997)- Christian Bale as Thomas
He plays such a happy guy in this movie but he's so emo now!

The Adventures of Tom Thumb & Thumbelina
(2002)- Elijah Wood as Tom Thumb
It amazes me how Elijah can be so creepy in Sin City and so happy in LOTR.

Born Christmas day in Philadelphia, his early years were spent in his mother's Baptist Church. In his early teens, his family moved to Los Angeles, where he studied drums at Jefferson High School and continued singing.

Los Angeles Times critic Don Heckman said of a recent performance at the Jazz Spot in Los Angeles, "[H]e blends a hard-swinging, outgoing vocal style with a quick-witted sense of humor . . . he does so with a rich timbre, a gift for drama and a singular capacity to stimulate an audience," and "[H]e was a musical whirlwind, bringing life, love, humor and musicality to everything he sang."

Royal Crown Revue
Often imitated, but rarely matched, RCR has pioneered, over its fifteen-year career, a totally unique sound and style, serving as the blueprint for an entire generation of musicians and music lovers. This band was and is the spearheading force behind the "retro style" which has exploded from underground scene into bona fide cultural phenomenon.

With a fifteen-year career and literally thousands of shows under its collective belt, today's ROYAL CROWN REVUE is a finely tuned alchemy of jazz and jump, an elegant blend of everything from be-bop to gut-bucket blues. In addition to Nichols, Dorame, Steen, and Glass, the current lineup includes three New York jazz veterans: multi-reed wizard Jim Jedeikin, Mark Cally on guitar, and Dave Miller on bass. Here for the long haul, it should be readily apparent to anyone with an eye (and ear) for talent that ROYAL CROWN REVUE will be integrating our country's musical past long into tomorrow's musical future.

World Rhythms Night @ Levitt Pavilion
Memorial Park - Pasadena

Harmonia
Harmonia presents the traditional folk music of eastern Europe, ranging from the Danube to the Carpathians. Its repertoire reflects the cultures of this region: Hungarian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Romanian, Croatian and Gypsy. Performing on authentic folk instruments, and styled after turn of the century East-European Gypsy bands, their music is drawn from both the urban and rural traditions of Eastern-Europe.The ensemble's performances evoke the full range of human emotions; interspersing fiery, passionate virtuosity with soulful melancholy and nostalgic yearning.

The musicians come from varied East-European backgrounds; in Harmonia they have found a common musical language. Harmonia brings to the concert stage the vitality and excitement of ethnic weddings, celebrations, and smoky cafés that inspired composers such as Bartok, Brahms and Lizst. Whether performing in these traditional settings or in concert halls, Harmonia's members stay close to their roots.

Bien, haganle caso a Gato.

This is the post where I decide to revisit Elijah Wood and totally call out my compatriot for being WRONG. Normally I might be all like "I don't want to say she's wrong," or something like that, but I totally disagree with the idea that Elijah Wood is anything but a wee adorable hipster with big blue eyes. I always hope that I'll see him at Pitchfork or something, although that dream has yet to be realized. I think that maybe it's because he just blends in with all the other hipsters who look like child molesters.

I suppose it's possible he's carrying condoms and wine coolers in that bag, but I don't think so. Maybe it's because I only want that to be true if he's coming over to my house.

I’ve always been a bit confused about who John Hurt actually is. I’d heard his name thr

I've always been a bit confused about who John Hurt actually is. I'd heard his name thrown around the movie blogosphere for a long time, but for some reason was never able to place him. I'm guessing my first introduction to him was his narration of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (my second-favorite film of 2006), but even after that I still couldn't place a face and always thought he was some far-off relation to William Hurt. Stupid? Yes. A simple trip to Wikipedia or his IMDb page would have helped, but I was a bit too stubborn.

Well, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull finally gave a face to the voice I'd become so enamored with. Hurt's character was one of my favorite parts of the film and I wish Spielberg would have given us more of him. So you can imagine my glee when I was surfing the net the other day and found a new film with John Hurt in a leading role. But not just any leading role -- a juicy one as an Oxford math professor, a role that guaranteed lots of satisfyingly long monologues. Its one of those kooky movies made in another country but with American and British actors speaking English that will then be dubbed over for release in said country. Confusing. Anyway, this movie isn't coming to the US of A anytime soon, but I was able to track a copy down and watch it nonetheless.

The film is called The Oxford Murders, based on a best-selling Spanish novel and directed by popular (at least in Spain) Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia. Its about an American exchange student named Martin finding himself entrenched in a murder plot while studying mathematics at Oxford. Martin is played by Elijah Wood and John Hurt plays brilliant math professor Arthur Seldom, a curmudgeonly old geezer with a flare for younger women and high-strung postmodern thought.

The murder plot is very dark and involving ... in some ways the flow of the story reminded me of a Dan Brown novel (Angels and Demons, The DaVinci Code). When it comes to guilty pleasure entertainment, this is just the kind of stuff I like. No matter how cheap it can seem, these expansive mysteries with mucho mythology appeal to me more than most things. So it was with this in mind that I could forgive all the films many missteps: the extremely obvious dialogue, a Russian character with badly dubbed voice, the infantile romance subplot complete with a ludicrous love scene involving spaghetti, and some truly embarrassing acting.

There is much to be admired, though. John Hurt completely owns the film and he makes laughable lines seem completely plausible. He deflects Elijah Wood's wooden countenance makes the movie his own. Considering what Hurt is working with, its a brilliant performance and worth watching just for his screen time. Iglesias' direction also has moments of greatness. He makes classroom scenes comprised of long intellectual dialogues seem interesting, often filming historical events spoken of in the dialogue. The production is quite opulent and is always easy on the eyes.

The ideas of the film that also intrigued me even though I disagree with some of them whole-heartedly. The movie begins in the midst of a WWII battle in which British soldiers marvel at one of their men sitting in the middle of a surging battlefield writing in a journal. John Hurt then pipes in with his first meaty monologue saying that this man was not crazy -- he was urgently writing what would become the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus; what he calls "the most influential philosophical work of the 20th century." His main idea: there is no way of finding absolute truth outside of mathematics. Philosophy is dead and "whereof we cannot speak, therefore we must be silent." This idea is bounced around constantly in trying to solve the Oxford murders and is turned around, molded, proved, and disproved all over again until the film's mind-boggling last scene which takes place in a museum full of fake artifacts. My head was swimming all through the end credits.

Yeah, The Oxford Murders may be a mediocre-to-poor film, but John Hurt is darn good and it intrigued me the whole time. I didn't feel like my time was wasted. If it ever decides to pop up in theaters here in the US, I'll write a more formal review. If you can find it, give it a watch. The awesomeness of John Hurt in a leading role is almost too great to pass up.

You've seen movies set in alleys, rooftops and courtyards, but Old Pasadena has decided if these make great settings for movies, these also are great settings to see movies!

From the great Breakfast at Tiffany's to the giggle-worthy Hygiene Shorts from the 1950s to the gory The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to the God-knows-what-to-expect student shorts, Fridays and Saturdays will be movie nights in Old Pas starting 11 July.

This year will be a special celebration of Audrey Hepburn, including Charade, Sabrina and Roman Holiday. Other classic movies shown include Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and Mary Poppins. If you want an all-nighter, they will also be showing the Lord of the Rings from 8:30 p.m. to dawn.

FESTIVAL SCHEDULE:

Friday, July 11

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS ArmoryCenterfor the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

8:30 PM – CLASSIC HEPBURN: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

"I've got to do something about the way I look. I mean a girl just can't go to Sing Sing with a green face." - So sighs Audrey Hepburn's girl-about-town Holly Golightly, breezing ever-so-gently through the real world with hardly a ripple. But when she meets sober, handsome, nice guy George Peppard, she begins to gradually re-think her “anything-goes,” high-living lifestyle.

10:00 PM – SCI FI: THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) School House Parking structure rooftop, 33 E. Green Street.

Actress Ann Robinson will introduce the screening.

The quintessential 1950's science fiction film, in which scientists and the military join forces to conquer an alien invasion. Even today, few films can match this movie's triumphant blend of special effects and snappy romance (in the form of the relationship between astronomer Gene Barry and his spunky girlfriend Ann Robinson.)

Saturday, July 12

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

Friday, July 18

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS Armory Cente for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

8:30 PM – CLASSIC HEPBURN: CHARADE One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

Widow Audrey Hepburn finds herself thrust into adventure when her dead husband's war buddies come after her, thinking she has money they stole together during the war. Cary Grant is the stranger who is as mysterious as he is attractive--and whom Hepburn falls for as she runs for her life.

10:00 PM – HORROR FILM: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Basement of Schoolhouse Parking Garage, 33 E. Green Street.

Director Tobe Hooper will introduce the screening.

One of the best American horror films from the 1970s and certainly one of the scariest movies ever made. The unknown actors and real-life locations burn themselves into your memory, assuming a nightmarishly twisted reality that lingers long after you’ve seen the film. After hearing of a cemetery desecration, Marilyn Burns and friends go on a jaunt in the broiling Texas countryside to make sure her grandparents’ graves are okay, only to become stranded at the rural home of a family of inbred cannibals. Director Tobe Hooper expertly escalates the horror until you can’t stand it anymore…then goes one step further. With Gunnar Hansen, Ed Neal.

Julie Andrews is God’s gift to nanny-dom as Mary Poppins in this classic musical comedy/fantasy. When Poppins comes to work for the Banks family in their turn-of-the-20th-century London household, she uplifts everyone’s spirits and brings magic to their lives. Dick Van Dyke is Bert, the good-natured chimney sweep and the great Jane Darwell, in her last screen appearance, plays the bird lady. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Andrews for Best Actress and Richard M. & Robert B. Sherman for Best Original Song and Best Original Music Score.

8:30 PM – CLASSIC HEPBURN: SABRINA One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

Chauffeur's daughter Audrey Hepburn blooms from ugly duckling to fashion queen as she tries to choose between wealthy, middle-aged Humphrey Bogart (at his sexy, smokey best) and cocky lover-boy William Holden (a Wilder favorite). Billy Wilder's classic romantic triangle.

10:00 PM – MENTAL HYGIENE SHORT FILMS Mercantile Alley (right behind Coffee Bean at 18 S. Fair Oaks)

Presented by Archivist and Historian Rick Prelinger.

For the quarter-century following World War II, a special kind of classroom film received wide circulation. These "mental hygiene" films thrived in a confused and nervous America. The rebellious behavior of young people challenging the social norms struck fear into the hearts of parents and educators, who saw dark futures for teens who broke the rules and refused to fit in with society. These concerned adults embraced the metal hygiene film as a new means of delivering social guidance. The creators of the films took their cues from the wildly successful training and propaganda films of the World War II era. They used the same shock and scare techniques to warn teenagers about substance abuse, venereal disease, juvenile delinquency and the awful fate of kids who drive too fast on prom night.

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

8:30 PM – CLASSIC HEPBURN: ROMAN HOLIDAY One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

A real-life princess (Audrey Hepburn), weary of her sheltered existence, takes off on her own to see the sights of Rome, only to encounter romance in the form of suave Gregory Peck. But unbeknownst to Hepburn, Peck is really a reporter out for a story, and this inevitably complicates things as the two grow more intimate. This sweet-natured romantic comedy won three Oscars, including Best Actress for Hepburn.

10:45 PM – CLASSIC FOREIGN FILM: SEVEN SAMURAI One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

Director Akira Kurosawa's most famous film is certainly one of the finest movies ever made - a huge, sprawling but intimate, character-driven period epic about an aging swordsman (the great Takashi Shimura) who enlists six other warriors-for-hire (amongst them, Toshiro Mifune, Minoru Chiaki, Isao Kimura, Daisuke Kato, Seiji Miyaguchi, Yoshio Inaba) to safeguard a remote village plagued by bandits.

Pompadoured tough-guy John Travolta learns the meaning of true love, 1950's style, from summertime sweetheart Olivia Newton-John, with help from a fantastic supporting cast including Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Eve Arden and Frankie Avalon. A soundtrack of wall-to-wall hits ("You're The One That I Want," "Hopelessly Devoted To You," "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee") in director Randal Kleiser's irresistible teen-dream of a movie musical.

8:30 PM till Dawn – LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley, Middle Earth

J.R.R. Tolkien's literary masterpiece The Lord of the Rings has influenced generations of readers worldwide and continues to captivate new fans around the globe. Director Peter Jackson and a brilliantly talented cast and crew have brought to cinematic life the epic adventure of good against evil. The future of civilization rests in the fate of the One Ring, which has been lost for centuries. Powerful forces are unrelenting in their search for it. Fate has placed it in the hands of a young Hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits the Ring - and undertakes a heroic quest revealing how, through courage, commitment, and determination, even the smallest of us can change the world.

...this is too cute.

For those who don't know, Yo Gabba Gabba is a tv show for the preschool crowd that is way over the top and psychadelic. One of the best things about the show is that there have been some pretty impressive musical guests including the Shins, Low, Cornelius, and Biz Markie. There are also segments like this where little kids spazz out called "dancey dances".

here's a remix of Nathaniel's dance. He's become something of an internet superstar thanks in large part to Joel McHale from The Soup.

also, check out this previous post of mine featuring Elijah Wood dancing on the show. I could watch that video 100 times and never get sick of it. Actually, I probably have already. Click Here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vurdering:
