A license to create human-pig embryos to study heart disease has been issued by the fertility watchdog.

This marks the third animal-human hybrid embryo license to be issued by Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority and the first since the Commons voted in favor of this controversial research last month.

An HFEA spokesman said it had approved an application from the Clinical Sciences Research Institute, University of Warwick, for the creation of hybrid embryos. The center has been offered a 12 month license with effect from today, July 1.

The effort at the University of Warwick is led by Professor Justin St John. "This new license allows us to attempt to make human pig clones to produce embryonic stem cells," he said, where embryonic stem cells are able to turn into the 200 plus types in the body.

"We will take skin cells from patients who have a mutation for certain kinds of heart disease (cardiomyopathy, which makes the heart lose its pumping strength) and put them into pig eggs after their chromosomes have been removed. We will then make embryos so that we can attempt to derive embryonic stem cells which will allow us to study some of the molecular mechanisms associated with these heart diseases.

"Ultimately they will help us to understand where some of the problems associated with these diseases arise and they could also provide models for the pharmaceutical industry to test new drugs. We will effectively be creating and studying these diseases in a dish.

"But it's important to say that we're at the very early stages of this research and it will take a considerable amount of time. There is still a great deal to learn about these techniques and much of our early work will involve understanding how we can make the hybrid cloning process as efficient as possible."

The study is aimed at understanding the way power-producing structures in cells, called mitochondria, are passed from egg to embryo. In the hybrid, the mitochondria mostly come from the egg, initially making up around half of the DNA by weight, and the team will do experiments in order to ensure that the trace of human mitochondrial DNA takes over, not least because it is designed to work with human nuclear DNA.

"The key thing we are doing is trying to create stem cells without any animal DNA in them. So even though these hybrid embryos normally have a small percentage of animal DNA , we are hoping to create cells that would have human chromosomes and human mitochondrial DNA." The reason is that, as the team puts it, "mixing of these two diverse populations of mitochondria can be detrimental to cellular function."

Dr Evan Harris, Liberal Democrat science spokesman, commenting on the HFEA decision to issue a license to the University of Warwick to create hybrid embryos combining human skin cells with enucleated pig eggs, said: "This application is a further indication of the interest in this sort of research by UK scientists, the decision of the HFEA to issue a license following stringent checks demonstrates that it is considered both necessary and ethical."

"While this approval comes under the existing 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, both houses of Parliament have recently voted by large majorities to allow it into the future," said Prof Robin Lovell-Badge, of the MRC National Institute For Medical Research.

"It is good news that this license has been issued at a time when parliament has expressed overwhelming support for this research after an excellent public debate. I suspect other similar applications will follow and hopefully this research can now progress without the hype."

Teams in Newcastle and London are already creating hybrids. The former have already created hybrids with cow eggs to study the basics of how the use of genes changes in early development, the latter a range of species to generate stem cells from people with neurodegenerative disorders.

They never used any of the funds for the businesses. They only pocketed the money into their accounts.  When the city became aware of their non-receipt of records and use of the money, they knew they were ‘hoodwinked’; the very thing they warned African Americans many times before. The funds have never been accounted for or returned.

Many did not know Dr. Bey was impregnating over 100 young women as his wives and making them apply for welfare assistance to hand over to him. Over $1 million dollars was scammed by Bey with his fraudulent claims since the 1970's until his death in 2003 from the County of Alameda Social Services. He and his thug nation gang of sons would even threaten people at gunpoint and kidnap them one source says.

Probably, one of the worst scams they orchestrated was the alleged killing of popular newspaper journalist of the Oakland Post, Chancey Bailey. It was widely known of their feud against one another and The Beys finally put an end to the quarrel their own way but they deny that accusation.

Now the many of the late Dr. Bey’s businesses have been raided and belongings confiscated due to this incident and his trail of misdeeds. The citizens of Oakland never knew just how ruthless and dangerous those quiet and business minded working Muslims really were until Chancey Bailey’s fall to death.

"These persons are already in position to clear up the destruction of the religion in the Nation of Islam," Mohammed said. He predicted the group would unite with his Muslim organization. "I think there's a merger coming," he said.

The white race was not able to rule effectively for the first two thousand years because of a punishment which Allah put upon them for starting war and trouble among the righteous people in the very beginning. Six months after their fathers, rather I should say Father, had made a successful graft of them, they entered back into the Holy Land, among the Holy People. They started trouble. They were run out from among the Holy people and were punished for 2,000 years without any guide. They have not that history nor have you been given it. What went on 2,000 years before Moses’ birth.

Astronomers claim to have discovered, for the first time, an Earth-like planet outside our solar system that could support water — and potentially life.

Researchers have not directly seen the planet and it will be years before more sensitive instruments will be developed to look for signs of life on the planet that is about 190 trillion kilometres away from Earth.

Scientists believe this new planet, however, could be just right.

“This could be very important,” NASA astrobiology expert Chris McKay, who was not part of the discovery team, told the Associated Press. “It doesn’t mean there is life, but it means it’s an Earth-like planet in terms of potential habitability.”

Besides having the right temperature, the discovery team says the new planet is probably full of liquid water which is critical to life. But that is based on theory about how planets form and not on any evidence, said Stephane Udry, the discovery team’s lead author and another Geneva astronomer.

Two teams of astronomers, one in Europe and one in the U.S., have been racing to be the first to find a planet like 581 C outside the solar system. The European researchers looked at 100 different stars using a tool called HARPS (High Accuracy Radial Velocity for Planetary Searcher) to find this one planet.

The discovery of 581 C will likely fuel studies of planets circling red dwarf stars similar to Gliese 581. Red dwarf stars are the most common type of stars in our galaxy. About 80 per cent of the stars near Earth are red dwarfs.

Other details of the new planet:

• It orbits its star every 13 days.
• It circles its star 14 times closer than the Earth orbits the sun.
• Gravity is 1.6 times as strong as the Earth’s — so a 150-pound person would feel like 240 pounds on 581 C.
• Astronomers previously found a Neptune-sized planet circling the star Gliese 581, as well as evidence of a third planet about eight times the mass of Earth.
• It’s got the same climate as Earth, plus water and gravity. A newly discovered planet is the most stunning evidence that life - just like us - might be out there. Above a calm, dark ocean, a huge, bloated red sun rises in the sky - a full ten times the size of our Sun as seen from Earth. Small waves lap at a sandy shore and on the beach, something stirs…

“They had to find a planet outside our solar system because the ultraviolet light radiating from our sun will find them on any planet herein,” Ali said. “Understand if they make it to a new planet outside our solar system and practice the same racism there they incorporated here, they will face the wrath of the same God.”

This is the scene - or may be the scene - on what is possibly the most extraordinary world to have been discovered by astronomers: the first truly Earth-like planet to have been found outside our Solar System.

The Earth-like planet that could be covered in oceans and may support life is 20.5 light years away, and has the right temperature to allow liquid water on its surface.

I had never heard of this website until Michael Fisher over at AssaultonBlackFolksSanity posted about it's increasing popularity and it's salacious content. I had been meaning to check it out for awhile - but I do have other things on my mind. Last night, I tried to get access to the site but the download times were slow. I was only able to check out a few of the features. The site offers a cornucopia of images and videos depicting individuals in various stages of what is presumed to be moral decay. The site must be getting tremendous traffic because everything moved at a snails pace.

From what I could see, much of the imagery focused on movement of the posterior anatomy. Then again, maybe that's what caught my eye. When they purchase some more bandwidth, I'll check it out again.

"If you're not appalled, you haven't been paying attention." - that's the tagline. It's interesting. I had a discussion not too long ago (online) about the distinction between separation and segregation. I find that delving into the root of a word is often illuminating when seeking to understand the meaning of the author or speaker.

Appalled - "struck with fear, dread or consternation" - from the Latin to grow pale.

Oh, that's not me. I don't get down like that.

I've read a few postings by the site manager and can understand the perspective. I am left wondering, though how that moral posture fits with the economic value derived from that same ghetto mess. In other words, if residents of ghettos in Warsaw, Harlem, Chicago, New Orleans, Detroit and elsewhere have, through their experience, generated some of the world's most valuable cultural treasures, how do we know what is a mess and what is to become a collectible?

Given that there is a time and place for everything, was it not appropriate for Dinah Washington to sing about getting sexual healing from her dentist in 1948? Was it appropriate for Marvin Gaye to do the same thing? Was it inappropriate for Redd Foxx to record the albums he did? Should those classics be discarded because they offend a pale sensibility? What to do with Richard Pryor? And this tapestry is woven tightly together. You can't have Redd Foxx without cheap liquor and pressed hair and finger rolls and spandex on overweight women. You can't have Billie Holliday or Dinah or other legends without the pain and suffering that has been heaped on the collective...and you can't make it all go away by being appalled.

Michael Fisher points out that not all representations logically qualify as HGM's. If there is room to debate these depictions, don't we need a context? And when a context is not a justification, does not the Black who has become white (their word choice, not mine - "appalled") need more than their fear, dread and consternation. Don't they need a plan and resources to transform the object of scorn into something worthy of their gaze? And don't they need to create a relationship of mutuality with that object of scorn so that they have permission and cooperation to begin the work of transformation?

I don't doubt that the hosts of the site have a larger objective in mind. The website could be the first prong of a layered approach that seeks, much like the Nation of Islam did through speeches, to highlight all that needs to be addressed in the Black community. Perhaps the website simply uses the technology at hand to SHOW what was being said in the early 1960's by men under the leadership of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. If the website is the sum total of the "intervention," I suspect the architects of HGM will find themselves living like Dave Chappelle.

Chappelle trod down this path a few years ago. He found, much to his surprise, that people had not been paying attention and they were not appalled. In fact, they simply wanted to traffic in stereotypical images and farcical representations for reasons he lacked the capacity to address. Chappelle manufactured his images (in part). He seems to have "figured out" a piece of this maze, if not all of it.

For HGM, the jury is out. HGM reflects individuals in various stages of life - but it's not all "real." Some of the content clearly depicts aspiring entertainers (artists, musicians, porn stars, etc.). Some of the depictions of Black hair styles as HGM's implies a misguided aesthetic has taken hold of Black women. What are the implications of attaching personal aesthetics to the Black hair industry? It depends. If you're easily appalled and your preferences approach those of white women, your "choices" could be disastrous. Not everyone wants to look like Ms. Ann. Moreover, no one can make a better Ms. Ann than Ms. Ann. Following this path would facilitate entree of deep-pocketed interests in the Black hair market. Black women have done an incredible job of sustaining this profitable business PRECISELY because they cater to an aesthetic that cannot be replicated by corporations and white folk. However, and this is a big however, the role of salons in providing direct services to customers is limited in its overall service to the Black community. Salons are limited because they are not exclusive providers of their services - and because women make purchases from supply stores dominated by South Koreans. So, the ethnic hair dollar is leaking on the supply side. The leakage is worth millions. I guess Michael Fisher and I are on the same page today.

The same spirit of hair care and innovation that was so attractive when associated with Bo Derek and so funky when associated with Madonna derive from the same cultural ethos. Bathing in that ethos and wearing braids could get you fired from your job if your master disapproved. The master actually liked the braids. It was the wearer, the Black wearer, who was so appalling. What appears to be an HGM could actually be a collectible in its nascent form. The practice of pissing away billions of dollars is something that elite and middle class Black folk (of a social climbing, easily appalled bent) are expert. These "classes" were uniquely positioned to capture, consolidate, coordinate and cultivate Black cultural production into vertically integrated wealth to be put to service in the community. This has seldom been the case because these classes are too often "appalled" at the persons who generated viable economic products in music (blues, jazz, rock, hip hop) and other areas of life.

There has always been a group of "elite" Black folk who prefer to castigate rather than communicate, cooperate and dominate. I won't ascribe any motives to the folks who run HGM. I haven't spent enough time there. Surely, they've learned these lessons - otherwise, this exercise would constitute an abject and bankrupt exercise engineered to comfort a weak psyche.
