Dear Local Spud-U-Like,

After spending time in a busy mall at lunchtime, trying to find the things we'd come for and having forgotten to take the buggy out of the car, my two year old and I were tired and hungry.

I didn't have a lot of time and didn't want to stop in a cafe where I'd have to order and then wait. Neither did I want to go to MacDonalds and eat half my own weight in grease and salt. I saw your shop, selling simple baked potatoes and fillings, which you order at the counter and then take to one of your tables and decided that was the lunch for us.

There was a short line and I had opportunity to observe your dealings with other customers, most notably those with small children and the woman in front of me in her wheelchair. You were unfailingly friendly and respectful and one of you came out to carry the tray to the table when it became obvious that the woman with three kids wasn't going to be able to do it alone.

When we got to the counter, you listened patiently while I made my order and then quickly and efficiently filled it, smiling all the time. We had a healthy and filling lunch and then walked to the other end of the mall before we discovered I'd left my son's favourite toy on the tray. We walked back, my boy's feet trailing slowly along.

When we got there, you were cleaning the tables and I asked you whether you'd seen the toy. A look of regret passed over your face and I thought you were going to say 'no' but instead, you asked us to sit down while you looked.

You came back five minutes later, having gone through the rubbish, found his toy and washed it thoroughly, before bringing it back to us, with a smile for my son as you handed it to him.

In a place where customer service is very low on the list of priorities, you shine.

Thank you.

If you work according to normal office days, and you've been asked to come back on a Sunday, you'd know that coming back is a total waste of time, even if you're supposed to get some urgent done. I strongly believe that everyone deserves a decent break from the daily work grind, even if it means skipping something important. If it was important, you'd be advised to finish it by Saturday. I know, skipping Saturday nightlife is a bummer but better than being asked to waste time on a Sunday, no?

We must all strive to achieve a balance between our professional and private lives. Even if you're single and have absolutely no life at all after working hours, for goodness sake STAY AWAY FROM WORK AFTER WORKING HOURS IS OVER. No one will give you extra credit for being hardworking; they'd just think that it's your duty to do so anyway.

If you're gonna work extra hours, do it the smart way - make sure your bosses knows or sees you in the thick of action i.e. make sure he/she is there too! No point in you working your butts off while your boss is sunning their butts. The smartest way is to make sure that you get whatever needs to be done, done during normal hours. That means being as efficient and effective as you should. You should be able to anticipate when 'extras' would be asked of you, so be prepared for it. Then when the time comes, WHAM! You 'work' as seen to be so while actually coasting through it.

WORK SMART, DON'T WORK HARD!

Did everyone make it to their weekend in one piece? I certainly hope you did and that you're doing whatever you can do enjoy your weekend to the fullest. I'm sitting here on a Saturday night, and I can hear the wind occasionally whistling and blowing through the big mango tree outside as I sit here and write to you. I'm also occasionally looking up from the laptop to glance at the muted television in front of me. Does anyone else out there leave the television on muted when they are home alone? I sometimes do it for the illusion of company it provides, and I've got it muted at the moment so I can concentrate better on talking to you. I'm actually also waiting for my favorite Saturday night shows to come on, and the current bland reality show annoys me severely. Anyways, enough about my peculiar personality traits, right?

Well, I've officially been on vacation for a week now, and my mind seems to have taken complete and full advantage of the opportunity. It sort of feels like my body has been in auto-drive this past week going through the motions of daily obligations without much thought or feeling in my actions. Anyway, I went to the dentist on Wednesday, and I'm proud to report that Tom is 100% cavity free. I actually have an almost phobic fear of dentists and the relief of having no cavities was tremendous. The dentist and his 2 assistants did an excellent job of polishing and cleaning my teeth all for about 600 Baht, which is just under 20 bucks. I doubt if the dentist at home would even squirt you with the water tube for that much, right?

Then, speaking of back home, I made a trip down to the American Embassy on Friday. I only had about 2 empty pages left in my passport, and so a trip down to the embassy to get some additional pages was in order. I'm normally not a big fan of government interaction and their need for miles of red tape, but I must say that in this instance the U.S. government was quick and efficient. I was able to print out and fill in the form online beforehand, and then on Friday I was in and out in under an hour. Not only were the staff down there friendly and efficient, but the whole service was done free of charge. They should pay me to do P.R. for them for this entry, huh?

However, one thing I always find interesting is the large number of Thai citizens that are always there lining up and making visa applications when I've visited the embassy. They line up by the hundreds like you would see people lined up to enter a ride at Six Flags or Disney World. All morning long for what I assume to be every day there are huge lines down at the American Embassy for a chance at the opportunity to cross the pacific to the country I call home for one reason or another. This raised some difficult questions in my own mind, but I guess that's the bad thing about long vacations or holidays in life. You get to much time to think and critique the measure of your life when you are avoiding doing productive things with your time. Well, I should go now and watch Family guy, so much love to you from Bangkok. Thanks so very much for stopping by to have a read as always, and I will see ya soon.

Any successful programmer will say that they would love to write the cleanest and most optimized c

Any successful programmer will say that they would love to write the cleanest and most optimized code around. Unfortunately, bugs arise, code is ambiguous, or you don't have the time to rethink an algorithm to optimize its performance. This leads me to the three points in the title:

Code Refactoring, simply put, is rewriting already working code "to make it amenable to change, improve its readability, or simplify its structure, while preserving its existing functionality." [Wikipedia] In a lot of cases this is a good idea. Especially if others need to review your code, maintain functionality, or add new features in the future. This starts to become a problem when you try to do too much at one time. I've noticed that a lot of people group refactoring and optimization into one large category of chaos. In my experience, it is best to optimize then refactor or at least take your time optimizing so that refactoring isn't needed. This will allow you to create more efficient working code then make it readable to others. Doing them both at the same time will confuse you, reviewers, and the compiler (error, seg fault, ...ah).

Example [Wrong way]:

Coder: Wow, I could really use a HashSet instead of an ArrayList to optimize this code. [Start rewriting...] Function xyz is really messy, I'll clean it up then come back to the HashSet structure. Function 123 is messy too ...

Example [Right way]:

Coder: Wow, I could really use a HashSet instead of an ArrayList to optimize this code. [Start rewriting ... Finished with change in structure ... unit tests were successful ...] Function xyz is really messy, I'll look to see if its still needed and then try to clean it up.

Non successful coders will forgo inefficient working code for efficient non-working code. This is where optimization and Pareto's Principle play a role. Pareto's or the 80-20 rule states that 20% of your code will be responsible for 80% of the running time. Naturally, one should focus on optimizing the 20% of code to get the most speedup. Optimization should be the result of taking working code and making it more efficient. Planning and thought have to go into this process. Some going blindly into the project and hope to rewrite whole classes to gain a speedup only to find that their project no longer compiles/works/completes all the unit tests. Focus on simply refining small parts at a time and continue to test as you progress through. Optimized code should be your way of putting icing on the cake; you take already existing code and you give it that extra touch of efficiency.

As an example, a project that one may be working on has a runtime of ~1 hour to complete the task. It would seem completely worthless to spend hours optimizing/refactoring a piece of code that only takes 1-2 seconds to execute. Ideally; yes, you should make the code as best you can, but one must focus on the largest piece to tackle. Successful coders notice this and will attack the code with the largest runtime.

What I have found that is extremely helpful when optimizing is take enough time to think, design, and implement. This will allow you to write cleaner optimized code that may not have to go through the refactoring process (or as much). Also start with basic improvements in speed like changing a structure or protocol. Often these carry a lot of different pros and cons which you can judge specifically to your data. Overall, take time optimizing so that its done correctly so that people that maintain your code in the future will thank you!

Senator John Warner has asked Samuel Bodman the Energy Secretary to review informa

Senator John Warner has asked Samuel Bodman the Energy Secretary to review information that would reveal what the ideal speed limit would be that would allow the most efficient use of gasoline in our vehicles today. With gasoline prices topping $4.15 cents a gallon around the country the timing couldn't be better to encourage changes in the way that we drive.

Many Americans have already started to alter aimless driving habits. I see nothing wrong with that...we all could do better in planning where we go and what we do while we are out and about. Some people are in denial about the severity of the situation regarding supply and demand as well as all of the damage to our planet that our carelessness has brought.

Would the general population get behind a national drive 55 speed limit? I think it is going to take some convincing as it will be viewed by many as an inconvience after being legally allowed to drive up to 70 mph on some highways. After all, it will take longer to get where they are going. I think more people would be willing to do it if they felt that the automakers were doing more to ensure that we were getting more miles to the gallon by the way that they factory set the computers on our vehicles to use the gasoline we spend our hard earned dollars on.

Back in the seventies, I remember the drive 55 campaign; it was something like, Stay Alive...Drive 55. The focus was on safety. There are studies that show that driving 55mph saves up to 4,000 lives a year from traffic deaths. That is a serious number of lives that could be saved. Is it worth the inconvience of driving a slower speed on the highway if it saves families from prematurely loosing loved ones? I think so. Do i WANT to be slowed down...not necessarily, however; if i stop and think that maybe one of those loved ones that could be saved could possibly be one of my own family or friends...definately, slowing down is worth the inconvience.

Senator Warner refers to the previously mentioned studies that show that 167,000 barrels of oil a day could be saved by driving 55 mph. With the cost over $141.00 a barrel; that could be a significant savings of both oil and money. Is that reason enough to lower the national speed limit to 55mph? Driving 55 instead of 70 or 75 ( we all know people drive at least 5 miles over the limit because they get away with it) can save up to 25% of the United States oil consumption. So, maybe driving 55 will work because the oil supply is not going to last forever; it is already becoming harder to pump out of the ground because of the heavy demand.

Looking at the impact on the Earth's atmosphere is another area of concern regarding our usage of gas and oil without regard for long term reprecussions. Greenhouse gasses have been poo poohed for quite while now; people are in denial about the damage our planet has sustained because of our daily choices in how we conduct our lifestyles. That denial no longer works. Scientists, doctors, inventors, engineers and world leaders are now getting on board with many in the general population trying to come up with ways to cut down on the damage; and, coming up with ways to heal the damage that has already been done, by making greener choices. Coming up with alternative energy sources is a must; in the meantime, we must support ideas of utilizing the resources we have in better ways.

Today, G-8 or Group of Eight world leaders have decided to set a goal to half the greenhouse gasses in the world by the year 2050. This is admirable to have the wealthiest industrial countries to set the lead. Those countries include the US, Italy, Great Britain, Japan, Russia, Germany, Canada, and France; I am happy that they are taking the bull by the horns. However, of great concern is China which is having a surge in people who are buying and using automobiles rather than public transportation. In China, the population is growing and the demand for gasoline is growing as well. China is developing their roadways and highway systems and that is going to enable more people to buy vehicles; which is going to add to the demand for gasoline and oil consumption. Awareness and cooperation, as well as, education is going to be the key to limiting the demand by consumers. Is that reason enough for the United States to lower the speed limit to 55 mph; probably not, many will say, why limit ourselves if China won't or some other country won't.

When you stop and start tallying up the reasons to lower the speed limit in the US...you start to see a pretty compelling argument for the call to slow down. Saving lives, saving money, saving the Earth's resources of gas and oil, limiting the damage to our environment by limiting the production of greenhouse gasses that can destroy our quality of life...together, those are all pretty darn good reasons to take life a little slower and realize that each person, each city, each state, each country or providence can combine their efforts to change the world for the better.

I am going to make a committment to slow down to 55. I will rewrite my expectations of myself and plan ahead for the sacrifice of speed by leaving a bit earlier instead of driving faster. I will encourage others to realize that they too can make changes that will benefit us all. How about you...are you willing to endorse a drive 55 national speed limit?

According to a press release from Twentieth Century Fox:

We at "Futurama", Twentieth Century Fox Television and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are committed to reducing our impact on climate change.

I know that it seems odd that such a large corporation would attempt to become carbon neutral, but it's true. Just last year, Twentieth Century Fox released their first carbon neutral movie, "Futurama: Bender's Big Score" (which featured a cameo by Al Gore). This year, they released their second carbon neutral film, "Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs" (which, sadly, I haven't seen - yet).

In the press release, Twentieth Century Fox included the findings of their carbon impact measurements, which shows a steadily-growing need for carbon neutrality in DVD production.

In order to become more carbon neutral, Cinram, the company behind the production of the DVDs, has utilized several energy-efficient methods, including the installation of highly efficient electric injection molding technology and a highly efficient boiler.

In addition, Cinram has taken on recycling and reuse programs in its markets. Now, all waste products are sorted in order to recycle elements for use by other industries and businesses within the community, which has now kept, at least, 98% of the facility’s waste being reused rather than disposed of in landfills.

While Twentieth Century Fox, the Futurama production offices, and Cinram have all done their part to decrease their carbon footprint, there are still some emissions that are ... well ... unavoidable. To address these, Twentieth Century Fox has entered into an agreement to purchase high-quality carbon offsets from a wind farm project in India.

As of right now, the current trend in DVD sales is the sale of television show box sets (such as Family Guy, American Dad, and 24 - all Fox shows). "Futurama", however, has set a good example of how you can create a high-quality product, without increasing the impact of climate change on our planet. Heck, there are already shows being sold DVD that utilize eco-friendly packaging (An Inconvenient Truth (Paramount Classics), The 11th Hour (Appian Way), and Living With Ed (Brentwood Communications).

Now that's what I call "guilt-free" entertainment!

Me? A voracious reader?

Some call me that but the truth of the matter is I read when I am at home, which is not often due to my social life and business activities. But I have been working recently to become more efficient in my reading. Of course, I am read up on the latest in speed reading courses and I do use the principles outlined in these courses to help me get even more reading done than normal. But I think besides the amount of time available for reading I have a problem with the reading material itself.

For instance, I read for many reasons. One important reason is research for my writing projects. I also am a reviewer for BookPleasures.com so it is very important to get through this workload as well. And just as important is the reading that I do for my own pleasure. So damn! I have one hell of a stack of books next to my bed.

I suppose if you were to take them out and count them you'd find 25% of the books are for research, 25% for my own pleasure and 50% for review. But don't get me wrong. I enjoy them all!

So I have been asking myself if there is a system I can create so that I can spend more time with the books I read for my own curiosity. If you know of one or if you think of one, let me know!

Your resume must always attract an employer's attention at first sight. Hence make a best resume using some resume tips to land you your dream job

• Always use attractive titles and heading that match the job profile you want and a great way to do this would be to mention the job titles and skill headings clearly. Maintain the flow and the length of the resume and like a myth, you don't have to follow the strict rule of writing a resume in one page. You can highlight the headings to make it more presentable

• Employers generally make snap judgments while reading your resume - and if they see an unrelated job profiles or titles or skills then they immediately assume that you are not qualified for the position. Don't waste your time elaborating on your skills or the headings, as employers don't have time to waste on each resume and determine whether you have the appropriate skill or experience which they are looking for. The design of your resume must showcase your skills, experience and education at the first glance. At first glance, employers must form an image about your skills and abilities.

• Your resume should be designed to attract the employer's attention, but it should not be jazzy and should have the complete content and should include all your skills and abilities. These things may land you an interview, as well as determine your salary package that you may receive.

• Always use powerful words and statements to demonstrate or describe your achievements as well as your responsibilities. These points can grab an employer's attention and elevate your image in front of him or her. The more you specify your positive points, the better. Use powerful words and phrases to control the images that the employers develop about you while reading your resume. Powerful words should match the job profile you are seeking.

• Learn and analyze the key words that employers provide in the advertisements or job descriptions, as this should be the key element in creating powerful and impact oriented resumes.

• Always try and understand and project the employers hidden needs through your resume like for example if an employer needs someone who can handle departments, accounting more efficiently then you should identify it and anticipate the full range of need and show that you can resolve it through your resume.

• Resumes should always provide a list of duties of each applicant without explaining the benefits of the skills to the employers like for example a secretary's resume should state her typing speed and should also state how it could benefit the new employer. The real benefit of the employee should produce more work and also save the employer money.

• Your resume should create an image of you in front of the employer. When writing your resume, keep in mind the level of the job you are seeking and the salary you are expecting. Always use language according to the position you are seeking.

• Try and prioritize the content of your resume, as this is the most important mistake that is made by many job seekers. Always compile statements according to importance, relevance of the job you want.

• Always try and tweak your resume and cover letter as they can generate many more interviews for you. Try and place the heading to the left hand column for retail management positions.

Try and improve your resume as much as possible - after all, it's the one that can get you an interview call.

It is generally accepted that we should cut our energy use to be kind to the planet. Ever rising gas

It is generally accepted that we should cut our energy use to be kind to the planet. Ever rising gas costs make it essential to get the most out of your heating boiler and gas heating system. The typical UK house spends about 50% of it's gas costs on gas heating system energy use. Here's a few easy to action advice to help you get lower gas expenses.

Only use the gas boilers heat when and where you need it :
Heating radiators are made to be switched on and off. Have a look at whether there are any rooms in your home which are not being used and switch off the metal radiator there. There are no setbacks in not heating rooms which are not used, but there is an advantage in reducing the energy costs to heat your home. If you keep the entrance door shut to the room it will stop the flow of chilly air around your home.

Use the gas boiler to heat your home rather than other appliances :
If the room needs to be warmer use thermostatically controlled radiator valves and increase the temperature setting. A lot of the heat generated by a fire goes up in the chimney to the outside, the central heating is much more cost-efficient for heating than an electric fire.

Cut down on drafts by use of insulation
If you allow chilled drafts to come into your home then you need to pay for more gas to heat this air. DIY stores stock many insulation materials for use for this. Use a foam based sealant to close off any cracks between your door frame and the window frames where these meet the exterior wall. These type of cracks happen often in older homes as the foundations settle. drafts can be hunted down by using a candle flame and checking when it flickers as you move around the room taking care not to spill any hot wax.

Put on a jumper and warmer clothes :
Putting on additional clothes or just being active for a while will mean that you get hotter without switching up the heating thermostat. Maintaining a 1 degree decrease on the thermostat can save up to tenpercent on your heating charges.

Make good use of your curtains :
In the winter make sure that the drapes are open when the sun is shining to heat your home. At night as the external temperatures drop a lot of heat can leach out through your windowpanes. This heat loss can be decreased if you close the curtains, if you adopt this tactic over many months you can save large amounts on your heating costs. See To It you have thick or lined curtains to make them effective at preventing heat loss.

General guidance for the rest of the home :
You must insulate your gas boiler hot water cylinder if you have one. The hot water tank will hold hot water you have paid for and it is madness to allow this to cool down unused throughout the daytime.

Don't heat the walls of your house immediately behind the radiators, silver foil can be used to reflect the heat cutting this energy loss.

One of the most powerful tools I use today is enrolling people in what I am doing. If I didn't enroll my friends into my website, I would be lost, and have no chance of succeeding. There's no way I can do everything, so it's important to ask for help when I need it. This has helped me immensely and not just with business. So now that I have a friend helping me with this interview thing I'm doing, its going to be 10X better and I can spend more time on something else.

What do you do to be more efficient?

Much Love,

Internet is exciting thing in the world. We can get information from internet. The internet is a war

Internet is exciting thing in the world. We can get information from internet. The internet is a warehouse of information – a boon for anyone who wants to learn, do research or just find interesting stuff online. As www.want2learn.com stated in the article, “ten tips to master the internet”. The article also says that sometimes there can be such as an information overload that you lose track of what you originally wanted to use the World Wide Web (WWW) for. So, to make your journey on the cyberspace safer and more efficient, there are some tips. First, make the most of your time online. Then, use search engine, bookmarks your favorite sites, download faster and easier, computer protected from viruses, and the last, beware of spams.

When start to online, many persons start to spend his time to thought about website will visited. That makes your time spend meaningless. To avoid that, certain your self to make a list or things you want to do online, like visit a website, read email, or just read some news.

Cyberspace is warehouse of information. It is important to know how find information needed by us. The answer is use search engine! We familiar with some search engine like www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, or www.ask.com. To search about something, make your keyword be as specific as possible. If your keyword is phrase, don’t forget to put it in quotes. It will ensure that the result contains the phrase.

Next tips is bookmarks your favorite sites. Maybe you have address website visited regularly.
The latest trend in real estate today concerns the practice of making homes more energy-efficient. D

The latest trend in real estate today concerns the practice of making homes more energy-efficient. Despite its popularity, however, there are still many who have no idea where to start on such a project. With this in mind, I decided to write a short article with tips on how you can make your home more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Find a "green" architect or contractor. There are several resources online that can put you in contact with someone who is highly trained in this style of building, like the Energy Efficient Building Association and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

Start simple. You don't have to spend an enormous amount of green to live green. Start with the simple steps, like changing incandescent light bulbs to its compact fluorescent counterpart and retrieving recycling bins for your kitchen.

Make a plan of attack. Do some research online (or at your local library) and come up with a few ideas. This not only saves you money by cutting down on construction time, but it also allows you to set your budget and remodeling schedule.

If using wood, use reclaimed wood from another construction site or buy wood that comes from managed forests. The wood might be a little more expensive, but you will be keeping otherwise useless wood out of the landfills and will be preventing deforestation. By using reclaimed wood, you are also given the creative freedom to use the wood for whatever purpose you see fit.

If it fits within your budget, invest in solar or wind energy. Even if you couldn't afford enough solar panels to provide energy for your entire home, it is a step in the right direction. The beautiful thing about solar panels is that they can be connected, reconnected, and reconfigured at any time you like.

Invest in styrofoam insulation. As you may or may not know, styrofoam does not decompose, which makes it the perfect insulator for any home. The styrofoam absorbs heat on warm days, and cold air on cold days, which can save you a lot of money on your heating and cooling bills.

If installing new landscaping, be sure to use trees and plants that are drought-resistant or native to your environment. Again, do some research about what kind of trees grow in your part of the world. Be sure to use drought-tolerant plants, since they can survive a lot longer without water than most plants.

When removing old architecture, utilize salvage companies to minimize waste. Chances are, there is a local salvage shop nearby who will be willing to take old architectural structures off of your hands and into the hands of someone else who would, otherwise, not have access to such things.

Use "No VOC" paint, especially when indoors. Paints that contains volatile organic compounds contain chemicals that can make you sick. By using "No VOC" paint, you can eliminate these chemicals, not only from your house, but from the environment as well.

Try to use existing flora for solar heating and cooling. Not only can trees and green life add value and beauty to your home, but it can also absorb the carbon dioxide that is currently in our atmosphere. Also, by leaving the existing flora alone, you also prevent deforestation.

Let me make it known that this article is, by no means, a comprehensive guide to remodeling your home to fit you newly "green" lifestyle. These tips are just to give you a starting point, upon which you can base your project. Of all these tips, however, the most important one to remember is that you don't have to spend enormous amounts of green to live green.

Also, you don't have to just use reclaimed wood. There is a wide variety of reclaimed/recycled products out there, which you can find at any thrift store, salvage shop, or landfill.

It’s funny knowing that human are so lazy in one way, but in this video, (some, vary rare) hum

It's funny knowing that human are so lazy in one way, but in this video, (some, vary rare) humans are creative and yet so artistic. Watch...

As you see this Kinetic Professional, Theo Jansen, makes things move with so little energy.

OK, now to my opinion. We are in a crisis stage where as the world is growing warmer (Global Warming), black gold (petrol) is becoming very expensive and all that leads out to a world with a huge energy crisis. If, and only if the world can make Theo Jansen's creations in to more then what looks very artistic. We could save energy by using resources that is never ending such as the wind, the waves from the ocean or even human energy (where as we can see it uses just a tiny force to make something move in the movie).

And if so, my God, humans can save all the energy needed for a sustainable development and protect the next coming generations of human being. Just imagine a world with so much energy efficiency where it leads human to the upcoming and newer technology. A cleaner air, we don't need to use bio-fuel and waste our food supply for gas, we don't need any nuclear reactors that create waste, nor would there be war for energy. I know it sounds so utopic but dreams are a start for a better future.

Now the questions are: 'who would do all that?', 'would there be any government that would give such an enormous amount of money for such research?', 'and after that research, would that government be generous enough to give such technology for other countries who need it and not think of profit?'

Anyone got a comment?
